Located at it’s new home at 50th and Penn, Tinto Kitchen is a welcome addition to the iconic corner. Serving Latin Cuisine, it offers a welcoming, colorful decor boasting a glass garage door awaiting Spring. An outdoor fire pit warms customers that want to enjoy a bit of fresh air in the meantime. Serving signature made-to-order corn tortillas, it’s scratch kitchen is led by Executive Chef, Thierry Penichot and Sous Chef Jorge Sarmiento. Both bring their global experience to the flavorful menu. Chef Thierry Penichot is from Normandy, France. He started his career in Paris working within Michelin-Starred restaurants. Soon after, he was hired by Hilton Corporation. Working his way up through the ranks from Chef De Partie to Executive Chef, his global experience is impressive, leading Hilton kitchens in London, Munich City, Curacao, St. Lucia West Indies, and Minneapolis. A highlight of his career was as Chef at the Burj Al Arab in Dubai. “But of course, if I had not been transferred to Minneapolis, I would have never met my beautiful wife, Rebecca, ” says Penichot. Rebecca Illingworth Penichot is his life and business partner. She is from Mexico City, Mexico and works with Penichot to create a menu which includes family and other Latin inspired recipes. Sous Chef Jorge Sarmiento is from Lima, Peru. He previously owned and operated Uchu Peruvian Cuisine in Plymouth. His Peruvian roots are reflected on various expertly created Peruvian dishes on the Tinto Kitchen menu. A favorite is the Mahi Mahi Ceviche mixed with onion and sweet potato, served with house-made plantain chips and Lomo Saltado, a traditional steak Peruvian Stir Fry. His previous customers, and, many from the Peruvian community are excited to be able to enjoy these items at Tinto Kitchen. Sarmiento’s recipes add family-inspired flavors that he and his wife enjoy cooking at home.

A Letter from the Editors Welcome to the Winter 2018 issue of Lake Society Magazine! In this winter of winters, we hope that you will have the time to sit down in a cozy, comfy chair with a warm cup of “something” and explore the City Lakes neighborhood with us. In this issue we visit with Mike Streitz, longtime resident of Lake of the Isles, as he shares his memories of the area. The Jablonski family gathered under one roof for the holidays and share an incredible story of the generosity of their community. We also caught up with the Keller family who lead a busy and active lifestyle. Our Home features include an elegant home designed by TEA2 Architects in the Lake of the Isles area, a charming cottage near Lake Calhoun, and a Revelry Studios new construction project near Lake Harriet. We continue to add new categories to round out our coverage of the City of Lakes lifestyle. This month we add a Cuisine column, which will showcase local chefs and food connoisseurs. Our Life Style feature will showcase advice from local design guru Jay Nuhring. We really appreciate the warm response from you regarding our new publication. If you know a local friend or neighbor that you think we should feature, contact us directly. We love sharing stories and things going on in the neighborhood. You can find our digital version of the magazine at lakesocietymagazine. com. We wish you a very Happy New Year – and all good things in 2018!

Isles Life
Retired advertising executive Mike Streitz has spent most of his life in Lake of the Isles neighborhoods. The 510 Groveland resident recently shared a bit about his career and life in the Twin Cities. Mike started his career in advertising at Campbell Mithun, where he was hired at age 21 to be a copywriter. In the early years he wrote Pillsbury commercials for Arthur Godfrey’s radio show and Art Linkletter’s TV Show. But, by far, his favorite writing assignment at Campbell Mithun was for Northwest Orient Airlines. He wrote and produced music tracks in New York for the Northwest jingle, “Give Wings To Your Heart.” His team spent 25 days shooting photographs and recording commercials in Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the Philippines that resulted in the national campaign, “It’s Not So Far East On Northwest.” “Our first family home was on 24th and Russell, just one half a block from Lake of the Isles,” commented Mike. “My wife, Patty, and I loved walking around the lake and our daughters often joined us.” Patty and Mike joined the Basilica parish in 1960 and became very active in that community. When Mike and Patty grew out of the house on Russell, they moved to 1815 James -- a bigger house on a beautiful block, also close to Lake of the Isles. Patty and Mike were inspired by their friend and neighbor, Marianne Hamilton, one of the founders of WAMM (Woman Against Military Madness), and joined the peace movement in the 1960’s. They participated in several marches, sit-ins, and fasts, and led a march of families from the top of Lowry Hill to the Basilica to honor Martin Luther King and the hundreds of people who joined him on the march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. Two of Mike’s favorite pastimes are listening to classical music and going to the theater. “My parents had season tickets to the Minneapolis Symphony back in the 1940’s so, as a child, I got to hear the famous pianist Arthur Rubinstein and violin virtuoso Jascha Heifetz,” said Mike. “I also was in the audience when Igor Stravinsky conducted our orchestra playing his own music. What a thrill that was!” Mike and his wife were in the audience at the Guthrie’s very first season when George Grizzard starred in Shakespeare’s “Hamlet”, and when Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy played in Arthur Miller’s “Death of a Salesman.” “Over 50 years later, my family and I are still going to the Guthrie,” mused Mike. “We’ve also been season ticket holders to Theatre de la Jeune Lune, The Jungle Theater and the Children’s Theater – many of which we shared with our six daughters and twelve grandchildren. We thought it was important to expose them to something other than pop culture,” said Mike with a smile. 16

Located in the Kenwood neighborhood, this new shingle-style home designed by TEA2 Architects embodies the casual elegance the owners sought. T-shaped in plan and carefully sited to capture glimpses of Lake of the Isles, the home enjoys both distant lake views and inward views of its own picturesque garden spaces. To the front, French doors open to a patio with views of the neighborhood green space beyond. To the back, they overlook a private backyard oasis, embraced by a charming pergola and a cozy screened porch with fireplace. The primary living spaces are both open to each other and distinct, comfortable spaces on their own. Slight variations in ceiling height and floor level, post and beam “frames” between rooms, and built-in free-standing cabinetry create layers and spatial definition. Broad expanses of French doors wrap the first floor, maximizing connections to the outdoor terraces by inviting the outdoors and daylight in. Thoughtful massing and considered window placement orchestrate the flow of natural light into the home, and frame views of its rich natural surroundings while maintaining privacy. The sense of lightness and tranquility was inspired by the client’s memories from their time in California. The home’s story-and-a-half massing is graceful and sympathetic to neighboring historic homes, while still accommodating three second-floor bedroom suites and a laundry room. The existing neighborhood rhythm is respected and enhanced through its massing and exterior articulation.
Gable end-walls with deep-set windows, charming shed dormers, and delicately sweeping shingle-style forms, combine with thoughtful detailing to create a façade with rich character. As TEA2 principal Daniel Nepp commented, “It is very challenging, but extremely rewarding to our clients, to have a home that is very tailored to them, while at the same time being a complementary member of the neighborhood.” Inside, beautiful, subtle materials layered with handcrafted details and finishes imbue the architecture with a tranquility that was carefully integrated with the owner’s art collection. Integrally colored plaster walls with a light glaze, wire-brushed and waxed white oak doors, woodwork and cabinetry, and hand-hewn walnut floors coalesce to create a rich, timeless palette. Accents of leaded art glass, wrought-iron metalwork, custom fireplace screens and iron light fixtures lend the finishing touch. The client has nothing but praise for the team at TEA2. “We had a terrific experience with TEA2 in building our home in Kenwood. Dan Nepp and his colleagues were attentive to our needs and respectful of the style of home – and how it would fit into the neighborhood. They were excellent at listening to our vision and reducing it to a design that incorporated great insight and imagination. They were particularly helpful in overseeing the construction and assuring that their plans were meticulously executed. They are artists and engineers with great taste, while being available, responsive and considerate.” WINTER 2018

Calhoun Life
Something magical is in the air at the Jablonski residence on Holmes Avenue in the Minneapolis ECCO (East Calhoun Community Organization) neighborhood. Leslie and Mike Jablonski, and their two sons, Jack and Max, have lived in their charming family abode since 1994. The stately Mediterranean Colonial (circa 1919) was the very first all-electric house built in the city, and served as a model home for spectators for several years before first-inhabited in 1922. “We’re only the third owners of the home, so longevity seems to be a trend in this house. We’ve gone through two renovations and thanks to our architect/builder, Awad + Koontz, we could preserve the character of the house, along with original details, as we caught up with modern home amenities and accessibility needs,” notes Leslie.
Immediately following Jack’s hockey-related, paralyzing injury on December 30, 2011, the community came together to make certain the Jablonski’s house was made 100% accessible so Jack could return. Mike Jablonski remembers, “Our architect/builder, whom we had used in 2009 for a prior renovation, actually came to the hospital and guaranteed us they would reconfigure everything so we could bring our son home.” An accelerated, six-month renovation included installing an elevator, a rooftop deck over a new garage to accommodate Jack’s van, accessible bathrooms, and reconfiguring every area of the house so that Jack would have free-rein. Jack and Max spend a lot of time hanging out with their friends in an uber-cool man cave area on the lower level. “I’ll always be grateful to the community that helped to bring me back home to the house that I was raised in,” remarks Jack. Although it would be impossible to list everyone who has supported the Jablonski’s following Jack’s traumatic accident, many who have donated funds, along with sweat, tears, compassion, and hugs have included the communities of Benilde-St. Margaret’s, Carondelet Catholic School, and the associations of St. Louis Park Youth Hockey, Southwest Youth Hockey, Minnesota Wild, Minnesota Twins, Minnesota Vikings, and the National Hockey League. All four family members share the same sentiment of the most-favored spot in their beautiful home. “We love our rooftop patio, where we spend most of our time from the first warm spring day to the first snowfall – we entertain, eat, nap, work, read, drink coffee and wine, grill, catch the sun, and sit by the fireplace on chilly nights,” adds Leslie. The next best thing in the Jablonski’s warm and inviting, happy home seems to be the recent addition of a new beating heart: their nine-month-old French Bulldog, Marty. Leslie exclaims, “He’s entertaining, silly, smart, snuggly, naughty, and my sweet shadow. Yes, his snoring might wake us during the night, but his snorts and snores makes us giggle, his kisses make us smile, and his sassiness keeps us on our toes. I love our daily walks along Calhoun and through the ECCO/Uptown neighborhood.” Jack and Max currently attend the University of Southern California, and the household buzz gets in full-swing when they return home for school breaks. Leslie and Mike are happiest when they are all under one roof. “Our house is often the hub of entertaining for friends, especially when Jack is home. I love to cook, and I am happy to serve the masses! The parents gather in our kitchen, and the boys hang in the lower-level man cave. Mike and I enjoy hearing their laughter, the bantering, the noise of an X-Box game or the clicking of a ping-pong ball. Yes, even Jack can play ping-pong, as we wrap/Velcro a paddle to his hand - and, he’s good! These are the things I miss when they’re in California,” says Leslie. 26

This beautiful 1904 era home near Lake Calhoun has an open functional floor plan that fits the needs of today’s families. It features a beautiful front sun room with wonderful natural light, a room which can easily transform into a work space, entertainment space, playroom, or sitting room, all of which past homeowners have tried out. There are a variety of charming spaces the home has to offer, all of which allow everyone to be near each other while still taking care of their own responsibilities. It is a perfectly kid friendly home those looking for a family-friendly living space, but also features elegant entertainment-ready spots perfect for any gathering. The homeowners have also chosen to combine traditional, modern, and eclectic decorating elements throughout the house, though it could be effortlessly suited to any preferred decorating style. The backyard patio and newly landscaped yard make for the perfect setting for guests, and the indoor spaces complement them perfectly. The beautiful new kitchen cabinets were created by skilled craftsmen from Wisconsin, and kitchen includes stainless steel appliances, honed black granite countertops, a single basin stainless steel sink, and subway tile backsplash, all coming together to create a gorgeous cooking and dining space. 30
Other features are three lovely bedrooms and two bathrooms, as well as the many high-ceilinged public rooms. The three quarter bath on the second floor features newly updated subway tiles. The second bedroom also has a recently added closet. Other recent updates include new stunning light fixtures throughout the home, a back yard and side yard fence addition, newly painted walls, refinished hardwood floors, and plantation shutters. Outside, a blue stone pathway was put in, and extensive landscaping and tree trimming were done, in order to enhance the beautiful outdoor space. Paint choices all came from Benjamin Moore’s ‘Heritage Collection’, which the homeowners say were chosen to reflect the time period in which the home was built. The combination of classic charm and newly renovated spaces make this home one of a kind. Its incredible location just blocks from Linden Hills, Lake Harriet, and Lake Calhoun make it all the better. It is the perfect family home for anyone looking for quality comforts combined with stylish living, all just minutes from lakes, parks, shops, restaurants, and more.

The Keller Family, Laura, Ava (18) Davis (16) and Alden (13), live along the Minnehaha Creek just a few blocks from Lake Harriet. Ava and Davis were born in San Francisco and go to Southwest High School, and Alden, the only native Minnesotan in the family, born here in 2004, is a student at Lake Country Montessori. All of the Kellers are athletes with a passion for soccer, and Alden is also an accomplished runner. As a senior, Ava will be heading to college in the Fall. The family’s mid-century modern home opens to a large park known for its sledding hill in the winter, and it’s a great spot to watch kayakers go by on the creek from the patio in the summer. “It’s like a nature reserve back here, with eagles and owls peeking out of the trees, and baby ducklings waddling along the creek path,” said Laura. On most days, even in winter, their house, which is situated on the corner of the path to the creek is active with runners and people with their dogs. “You feel the city, but we also have this nice green space and no traffic, so the kids can gather with their friends here, kick the soccer ball, and tube down the creek in the summer,” said Laura. “And yes, they do that a lot!” Laura grew up in Avon, Connecticut, attended Skidmore College, and then built a career in advertising in NY, LA and SF. She moved here in 2001 from San Francisco, and first lived on Lake Calhoun for ten years in a classic Spanish Colonial with views of the lake itself. “We loved walking down to the playground with the kids when they were little, going to the Tin Fish for dinner, and watching the Minnekahda fireworks on July 4th from our backyard,” reminisced Laura. In 2007, Laura co-founded Pixie Dust Inc., a national executive search and organizational consulting firm. She was recently nominated to be the Minnesota Ambassador to Women’s Entrepreneurship Day (WEDO), which is a grassroots initiative to alleviate poverty by empowering, celebrating and supporting women in business worldwide. “WED ignites women leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs to initiate startups, drive economic expansion, and advance communities worldwide and it is celebrated in 144 countries,” explained Laura. Laura serves on two boards: Planned Parenthood MN and the 4As (American Association of Advertising Agencies). She is passionate about motherhood, community, social justice and women’s health, and also about inspiring women to lead and start their own enterprises. In 2011, the family moved to Lynnhurst into a modern style house, embracing a whole new neighborhood. “I find Lake Harriet to be the most picturesque lake of the three. The beautiful large trees, the dappled light, and the anchored boats often make me pull over and take photos like a tourist on my way home from work,” said Laura. “I remember landing here from California and seeing the Lakes District for the first time,” said Laura. “I was struck by the beauty and vastness of the lake parkways inside the city, and I fell in love with that charming Lake Harriet trolley car! The old trolley path was just beyond our yard.” Laura is not a native Minnesotan, but since arriving here from San Francisco she and her family have embraced the city and all it has to offer. 34

W Harriet Home
When interior designer Flora Angela Brama and her fiancé, builder Nicholas Thompson, were scouting for locations to build their first “from the ground up” home, they discovered a 520 square foot cottage built in 1911 near Southwest High. The small one bedroom lacked the classic character of homes of that period and the decision was made to start out fresh. Flora and Nick wanted a feeling of connectedness between the interior and exterior finishes, as well as lots of natural light, while maintaining privacy. Both of them love modern design and wanted to use natural and raw materials including concrete, wood, stone and metal. The lot created some challenges based on its size of 42 feet by 86 feet, and the hill at the back of the lot. They literally carved the home into the hill to create a tuck under garage, and the space for the home above after removing 46 dump trucks of dirt from the lot. Flora and Nick found a large lot of liveedge walnut in 20-foot lengths, and they used the material extensively throughout the interior of the home. “Finding such a gorgeous amount of material was an exciting part of the project,” exclaimed Flora. “We had great fun dreaming up ways to use the walnut throughout the home. It creates a wonderful sense of continuity.” During construction, once the roof had been ply-wooded, they discovered an awesome opportunity to install a rooftop deck with magnificent, unobstructed views of the city. “Throughout the building of this home, the space kept giving us design nudges and gifts along the way,” commented Flora. “The discovery of this view was one of those gifts!” The space constraints of the small lot made it tough to find a place for a garden, so Flora and her fiancé incorporated outdoor planters into the retaining wall and made them an architectural feature of the front façade and entry. Exposed concrete walls alongside the basement stairway and lower level entry create a nice reference to the home’s exterior. Flora and her fiancé own a small boutique firm, Revelry Studio LLC, and this project was a unique opportunity to wear both the hats of homeowner and designer-builder, which was, at times, a difficult balance. “It gave us a valuable perspective on what our clients experience when custom building a home,” remarked Flora. It’s hard to believe it has been a decade since the 2010 Winter Olympic Games were held in Whistler, British Columbia. The spotlight shone brightly on one of the largest ski resorts in North America. Despite the global exposure, Whistler has maintained its charm and small village appeal. Previously known as London Mountain, the name arose from a mining claim in the area. It was in 1962 that four businessmen from Vancouver had the notion to pitch London Mountain as the home of the 1968 Winter Olympics. The Garibaldi Lift Company was established in 1966 to achieve this goal. Despite the fact that The Winter Olympics went to Grenoble, France, Whistler was born and has since thrived. Whistler Mountain was named for the whistling sounds of the furry marmots found in this region. Take a stroll on The Stroll, which connects Whistler Village with Blackcomb Upper Village. This wide, paved walkway is lined with shops, restaurants, kiosks, and art galleries. Pop-up markets, street performers, and open-air concerts provide even more entertainment year round when weather permits. Whistler is truly a four-season destination. Winter affords world class skiing, snowboarding, dog sled rides and ice fishing. Ice cave tours and heli-skiing provide breathtaking views while in the air and on the ground. While at the Olympic Park try biathlon training, or for the advanced skier, a backcountry run. For a truly unique experience, attend the Whistler Adventure School. Design and build your own custom skis or snowboard. Let your creative side produce a long lasting memory of your trip. Summer affords miles of hiking and biking. For the extreme sports enthusiast there is no shortage of activities. Bungee jumping, white water rafting and zip lining are just a few of the thrills available. Spring and Fall offer nature blossoming and turning vibrant colors: a photographer’s and bird-watcher’s paradise. The Four Seasons Whistler provides five star accomodations with a luxurious mountain chalet feel. Expansive rooms offer step-out balconies with breathtaking views of British Columbia’s Fitzsimmons mountain range. Fast-filling soaking tubs and walk-in showers surrounded by natural stone complete the lodge ambiance. Executive, one and two-bedroom suites provide space and flexibility for families. For the traveler who is looking for a home-away-from-home experience, the Residences are the answer. Set apart from the main hotel, the Residences provide guests with a feeling of sophisticated elegance. With full access to the main resort’s amenities, the residences have an exclusive gym, a pool/Jacuzzi, and private concierge staff. Varying in size from two to four bedrooms, each residence will have a gourmet kitchen and laundry facility complete with boot warmers! Your Residence concierge team will attend to all of your pre-arrival needs and will be at your service for the duration of your stay.
“Whistler Mountain was named for the whistling sounds of the furry marmots found in this region.”
The Four Seasons resorts are known for their exceptional service and they won’t disappoint here in Whistler. Qualified Ski Concierge associates will be on hand to ready your ski equipment for the slopes. Whether you bring your own gear or rent the Four Seasons’ latest high-tech equipment, each morning your skis will await you at the slopes. From Green beginners to Double Black Diamond experts they’ll have a certified instructor ready to hone your skills. Ask your Ski Concierge to arrange a lesson or two for you and you’ll be carving up the moguls in no time. “Full service spa” and Four Seasons Hotels are practically synonymous and the resort at Whistler offers sumptuous treatments with a local flavor. Try their Whistler Signature Treatment. It incorporates Canadian maple syrup and brown sugar into an exfoliating scrub. It will leave your skin glowing and wipe away the sore muscles from a day on the slopes. What sets the Four Seasons Whistler apart from the others is their amazing staff and attention to detail. You will be met with a warm, genuine smile by all who work there. A beautiful resort is only as good as the people who work there and this team is one of the finest I have experienced. “My philosophy is simple: love what you have and make it work.”
I’m very excited to write my first editorial for Lakes Society Magazine. Some of you may recognize me, or if not me, my work. I’ve been restyling and staging interiors around the lakes for 15 years. As one realtor said, I make Minneapolis beautiful one house at a time. My philosophy is simple: love what you have and make it work (sans Tim Gunn). Speaking of you - this year is all about helping you to be the best at what you do - and it starts with your home. I believe when your environment is balanced, organized, and beautiful you can focus on the things that are important to you - being a parent, your career, your health and your significant other. I’ve seen it before. Fixing your surroundings is life changing. It can be empowering and can restore your self worth and confidence. And it starts with your home – creating order and beauty. People often ask me “what do you do?” First I answer, “whatever it takes.” And then I say, “think of the show ‘What Not To Wear’ but for your home.” I’m an architect by trade but have a love for everything style - interiors and furniture (some of my best friends are chairs). But seriously, I subscribe to the idea of intention over object. I’m more interested in having a chair in a specific place rather than what the chair looks like. That’s where the magic happens. It’s an invitation to sit down, read a book, contemplate or daydream. It’s story telling but with furniture instead of words. I’ve always said a room should never need narration. It should tell you its story the minute you walk into it. So let’s get back to you. You have basic human need: a need for sustenance, a need for love, a need for rest, a need for purpose and a need for validation. You are an important cog to the wheel of life and whether you know it or not you are an integral part of this thing called life. So let’s uphold you. Let’s tell your story. Let’s help you be the best at what you do. Because when you are great you help others be the best they can be, too. One way for me to share design tips and strategies with you is to show you examples of my work. In this feature, I will share Instagram posts that I hope will give you ideas and inspiration for your own home and the spaces within. And, if you like what you see, you can always follow me on Instagram and keep current with all of my projects. I look forward to sharing this journey with you.

As Kya explained, “I wanted to create a retail experience that was unique and different -- something that hasn’t been done before.” Aura Boutique attracts women who have a love for fashion, art and elegance. The boutique offers a wide variety of clothing types -- something for everyone. Shoppers can find everything from casual and sporty to a gown for a charity event. One twist on the shopping experience is that almost everything in the store is for sale. “We will sell the art, furniture, and even the pillows,” said Kya. The boutique carries unique brands, which include QUAY, BB Dakota, Pistola, Joah Brown, HAALA Denim, Zhivago, n:Philanthropy, and the Jetset Diaries. “We try to carry brands that you can’t find in Minnesota,” commented Kya Walker. “We want people to see something and ask ‘Where did you get that?!’” Most of the items in the store are sold on the website as well. Their Instagram feed features lifestyle photos that showcase the boutique’s merchandise. The vibe is elegant, classic and contemporary. And, as for Kya’s goal of creating a destination shopping experience? Mission accomplished. Written by ellen olson Photography by a j sundby WINTER 2018

FASHION
Samantha Rei’s earnest passion radiated out of the phone and into my ear early on a Sunday morning. Balancing design, interviews, TV, and all else life throws at her, she graciously chatted with me about her past, present and future. As a self described whimsical, assertive, creative, what possibly struck me the most was her dedication. You may already know but, in case you don’t, Samantha began designing 17 years ago. Take that in for a moment; Samantha Rei preceded the Etsy movement, the MNFW initiative, and even the #shoplocal initiative. Samantha knows a thing or two about entrepreneurship, overcoming obstacles (which only women and especially women of color may face), national recognition on Project Runway, community and delivering a final product women LOVE. So what is it about Samantha’s evolving style that people all over the world covet? Her core design tenet revolves around fashion being a statement of beauty, strength and rebellion fit into everyday life, “strength comes in all facets, crying makes you strong and clothing can be armor. Clothing is what you wear to not be arrested for indecent exposure. Fashion is what you wear to tell your story”. Samantha’s collections, the longest consecutive running in Minneapolis, tell a story each time, translating mood, freedom, whimsy, witchy and strength in ways words cannot. After many years running the design business with a side-job (which entrepreneur has not tried this balancing game!) she was inspired by another local heavyweight: Joy of Joynoelle Atelier. Joy told a design class she was taking in 2008, “There comes a time where you get to the edge of the cliff and you have to jump off ”. Jump she did!

So much has changed since 2008. Her stint on Project Runway, for example, has helped grow her brand in unexpected ways and created an even closer connection with her clients. Fan mail pours in to tell her how her clothes have positively impacted someone’s life. One conclusion to deduce is that Fashion has never been more relevant. In an age of shifting tides, focus on local, exposing manufacturing abuse and a strong desire to show individuality, Samantha is ready. She has a new Minneapolis studio where you can find her jamming to Galakticon (metal opera anyone?) and fit for a custom piece, or order online at Samantha Rei.com You can also buy her special lipsticks shades in partnership with Elixery. What are you waiting for? WINTER 2018

CULTURE
For Kevin Bowe, the music industry is a way of life. As he puts it: “Most people have their work and then they do things for fun after they get off work. My work is my fun so I’m really lucky that way. It keeps me very focused because there’s always more to do or learn[;] it’s infinite and always interesting.” Bowe has spent his whole life in Minneapolis, but as an adult his work has taken him around the country and world. During his time in the music industry he’s written songs for three platinum records and two Grammy-winning albums. Along the way he’s worked with such incredible names as Jonny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Etta James, Paul Westerberg, The Replacements, The Warren Brothers, Joe Cocker, John Mayall, 3 Dog Night, Lynyrd Skynyrd and others. In particular, Bowe says, “I’m very happy to have worked with Paul Westerberg and the Replacements and that’s about as good as it gets from my point of view. But also Etta James [and] Joe Cocker…” are among his favorite collaborations. He says it’s surreal working with musical icons such as these; it never gets old for him. Bowe says even recently in some of his many travels to work in Nashville and LA he worked with the man who wrote “The Little Mermaid” theme song—another fascinating addition to his experiences in musical collaboration. Bowe signed his first publishing deal in the ‘90s with Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. For the rest of that decade he worked exclusively as a songwriter. But as the 2000s began, he expanded into engineering, mixing, and music production. He works often with local artists, but has also worked extensively for film and TV, particularly for ESPN. Among his many notable credits, work with CNN, The Tonight Show, Disney Channel, David Letterman, TNT, The Sopranos, and many others are included. He has released music with his own band The Okemah Prophets, toured on guitar with Paul Westerberg and toured Australia playing with cast members of Sons of Anarchy. Bowe has a full studio of his own, but also spends time at the Institute of Production and Recording, where he is a program chair; often tracking basics and then finishing work in his own studio space. The impressive space was designed by Dave Ahl, who also designed the studios at IPR and Flyte Tyme. Bowe isn’t selective about which genres of music he’ll work on. He loves anything, from bubbly pop and blues to jazz, rock, and country. As he says, if the artist is good, he’s in. Bowe also says when he spends more time producing, he misses writing, and vice versa. He loves all the facets of the varied career his work has brought him. It’s clear he’s found an industry where he excels, and where he can make a huge impact on music lovers around the world.

On Saturday, November 4th, the Jack Jablonski BEL13VE in Miracles Foundation and the Minnesota Wild hosted their fourth annual “A Night To BEL13VE” gala to raise funds and awareness of advancements in paralysis recovery research. A pre-hockey game party that included dinner, silent and live auctions and a short program, was held at the Roy Wilkins Auditorium in Saint Paul’s RiverCentre. It was followed by the Minnesota Wild and Chicago Blackhawks game at the Xcel Energy Center. KSTP’s Tom Hauser served as the emcee of the program that kicked off with an onstage appearance by Jack Jablonski along with NBC Sports broadcaster and NHL legend, Jeremy Roenick. The BEL13VE Foundation is helping to fund the first patients in an amazing Mayo Clinic research study that is making paralysis recovery possible. Jered Chinnock, the first trial patient in Mayo’s epidural stimulation project, attended the event and brought all 500+ guests to their feet after watching an inspiring video about him and the progress he’s made since he began the study.

Jered’s story and the BEL13VE in Miracles mission to advance paralysis recovery research were shared on the Jumbotron in the arena during the game’s second intermission. It was followed by a compelling live interview between the MN Wild’s in-arena broadcasters and Jablonski, Chinnock, Jake Anderson and Matt Olson, who are also living with paralysis from a spinal cord injury. Proceeds from the evening will fund another patient in the Mayo Clinic study, which is a significant step towards moving the procedure from the trial lab to general practice so it can be available to the 1.3 million Americans living with paralysis from a spinal cord injury. bel13vefoundation.org 1 - Front row - Tanya Lapointe, Jeremy Gedatus, Steve Mireau Back row - Mike and Kim Gedatus, Lindsey and Ryan Pomasl. 2 - Andy Biloon, Jack Egbert, Tim Fellner, Jake Anderson, Austin Balm, Jackson Spingler.3 - Cheryl Besse. 4 - Jack Jablonski, Jeremy Roenick, Tom Hauser 5 - Leslie Jablonski, Jeremy Roenick, Amy Macrae. 6 - Mike, Leslie, Jack and Max Jablonski.7 - Jordan + Jamie Leopold, Jeremy Roenick, Jack, Alisha and Zach Parise. 56
