Editor’s Letter

...and then it snowed...

When we asked a group of wedding professionals to interpret our vision of a woodland Scottish wedding, we pictured an overcast gray autumn day with moody clouds and a wee bit o’ wind. We never dreamed it would snow the day before the scheduled photo shoot. No problem, as it turned out. The wedding experts pulled out all the stops and brought our vision to beautiful life; we ended up being very grateful for the light dusting of snow. It is one more example of how the creative wedding professionals all over the Lakes Region work together to make magic happen for couples, no matter what time of the year or the weather conditions. We feel extremely fortunate to work with the best in the business and that is no exaggeration. Give them an idea, give them snow or rain or a challenge and they turn it into wedding style and beauty. This is a year where that creativity shines through and we feature some gorgeous Real Wedding stories and style photo shoots in this issue. We have gone from a mountaintop in the snow to a brilliant autumn day on the farm to a warm summer’s day at a private waterfront home to offer you many styles and choices as you plan the perfect wedding. Congratulations and happy wedding planning!

Trending... What’s Ahead for 2018 Weddings That Woodland Style

You will still hear the word rustic used to describe outdoorsy weddings or barn weddings, but the most trending look and style is now called wooded or woodland. This combines those rustic touches that have been so popular in recent years with the more lush, natural look of the deep woods. The style will see wooden chargers, wooden containers and metal lanterns mix with deep green colors, bouquets with lush flowers and touches of herbs and greenery. At left is a perfect example of woodland style, which mixes florals, a lantern and wooden pieces, all by Lakes Region Floral Studio.

There’s nothing like original artwork. Rather than go with pre-made invitations and other wedding stationary and table cards, etc., couples can incorporate the colors and overall theme of their wedding in their cards, envelopes and other printed pieces.

El’s Cards has a knack for translating the theme of a wedding into beautiful images and type. No matter your wedding style, it’s fun and memorable to customize your wedding invitations and printed items to make them especially yours.

Gold...

Gold rimmed plates, and the gold deer are elegant but simple... gold will continue to be a popular color to add upscale woodsy loveliness to weddings.

Elegant is Back...

While the rustic look is still popular, there is a trend toward elegant weddings. Says Sarina of A Day to Remember Bridal Boutique, “I’ve been noticing a move toward glam gowns”. Some brides long for a formal wedding with glittery diamonds, and plunging necklines, not to mention the groom in a formal tuxedo reminiscent of old Hollywood. An example of glam style is the Casablanca gown (style 2235-Primrose) pictured above.

Birch Hill Farm Rustic yet Elegant Events

Brides and Linen Trends By Michele Morrissette Wiggs divine inspirations design studio

There are basically three types of brides – Trailblazers, who are not afraid to embrace what has not been done before, and who actually create new trends; trendy brides who adapt current ideas to their own ceremony and reception plans, taking details and personalizing them to their own needs; and traditional brides who love the tried-and-true wedding customs. Each type of bride is unique in her own way, and linen looks for 2018 offer opportunities for each of these brides to customize their special day, and can provide an absolutely beautiful canvas for all their wedding dreams! The fastest growing look is that of Bohemian weddings, which incorporate many details from the 1970s, but updated with an international feel. Look for dreamcatchers, mandala flavored draping, ornate pillows, and lots of colors. Moroccan inspired accessories work great with this look, as do velvets, gauzes and drapy chiffons.

NH Images Photography

667 Gilford Avenue, Gilford, NH

Pantone’s color of the year is ultraviolet, and this romantic trend can be interpreted in many ways – from a shimmery organza or chiffon overlay, to more subtle accents of matte napkins, ribbons or flowers (especially if your attendants are wearing it as well).

P. 603.491.4624

Fabric textures make all the difference in your look, whatever the color is, but a strong color like ultraviolet lends itself to more dramatic showcases. It also looks great paired with a sage or kiwi green for a lush spring wedding.

Tradition never goes out of style, and this is true for the majority of brides, who choose the tried-and-true neutrals – white, ivory and the new neutral, blush. Any of

BRIDAL ~ SOCIAL OCCASIONS ~ PROM

While neutral colors are classic, there are great new textures to add a little kick, maybe to cocktail or cake tables – rosette, leaf, or curly willow are just a few examples. Throw in a splash of bright color for even more fun! We will always have the rustic look, especially in New Hampshire, but traditional burlap is being upstaged by linen – more elegant, more user friendly (it doesn’t itch or shred!) and it has a much nicer texture. Many brides prefer it as runners and napkins on long farm tables and it certainly looks great. The bottom line is, whatever YOU dream of for your wedding day is what is best for you – don’t be intimidated by anyone when choosing your linens – make sure and work with a reputable vendor, and ask your venue who they recommend.

these colors look awesome combined with silver, gold or rose gold, which are favorites year round. Sequins have been in the spotlight for several years, and while still popular, matte (not shiny) sequins are edging their way in to give a slightly more subtle take.

Scottish Wedding Style

A themed wedding can reflect the heritage of a family or a favorite location. The property at Castle in the Clouds in Moultonborough, NH is reminiscent of the sweeping, dramatic locations found of Scotland; it was the perfect setting for a Scottish themed wedding style photo shoot. The wedding professionals that styled the day opted not to get too Scottishliteral and chose beautiful colors, fabrics with just a light reminder of the Scottish highlands to create a beautiful wedding. A dusting of early-winter snow lent a magical touch to the day. All images pages 16-20 Philbrick Photography Bride model:Samantha; groom model: Corey 16 LAKES REGION BRIDE

34 LAKES REGION BRIDE

Amy and Alicia Date of Engagement: Feb. 4, 2016 Date of Wedding: Jan. 21, 2017 “We love Lake Winnipesaukee,” says Alicia when asked how she and Amy chose Wolfeboro, NH in the heart of the lakes area as their wedding location. (Amy’s family has been coming to the area every summer since she was little and in the last several years Alicia has fallen in love with the Lakes Region as well.) “We saw the Wolfeboro Inn and immediately loved it. We went on to our next venue showing because it was the same day, but then immediately went back and booked at the Wolfeboro Inn. The staff was friendly, the location was perfect, the atmosphere was right, and the budget worked...it was a perfect fit!” But why a winter wedding, when so many couples opt for a summer wedding in the Lakes Region? “In all honesty, we first thought of a winter wedding based on cost. We knew we wanted a wedding on the lake, and a winter wedding was affordable. At first it seemed strange not to have a wedding in the summer or fall, but wow, we’d never change it if we had to choose a million times over!” says Alicia. “Having a winter wedding is amazing. Our guests weren’t busy with summer/fall activities and trying to cram our wedding in, but instead a lot of people were excited to have a weekend of fun planned in the wintertime and made a whole weekend out of it. The rustic atmosphere of the Wolfeboro Inn really made the wedding perfect, because it added a natural charm that really wowed everyone. And back to the budget...we truly got everything we wanted in the budget we had. I highly suggest that couples looking to plan a nice/fancy wedding on a budget, look at a winter wedding...it’s totally worth it!” continued on page 47

Introducing...

The Barn On the Pemi

The newest addition to The Common Man’s distinctly New Hampshire family spent the last 177 years or so housing livestock and storing potatoes on the Peverly Farm in the historic village of Canterbury, NH. Keeping true to our Yankee ways, we salvaged this treasure, lovingly took it apart – board by board, beam by beam – and moved it to a beautiful spot with a view of the Pemigewasset River, adjacent to our Italian Farmhouse in Plymouth, NH. This three-story, 10,000 square foot event facility opens in June 2018, and will host up to 300 guests for gatherings and celebrations of all kinds. We welcome your early inquiries.

The Barn features... Light-filled interior with three-story windows and mountain views; built-in dance floor, table risers and two bars; fieldstone fireplace; private changing room; white-washed cross-back bistro chairs; handmade farm tables; rustic chandeliers and simple decorative elements; air conditioning and heat for year-round comfort; French doors leading to a terrace with fire pit and pergolas; beautiful landscaping; outdoor hanging couch swings; and a spacious, flower-filled greenhouse.

The Barn menus feature... Unique Farm to Table Offerings, Befores – passed and displayed, Tables for Choosing, Themed Tables, Plated and Specialty Dinners, Barn Stations, Late Night Snacks, House-made Desserts, Breakfast and Break Bites, Lunches and Sack Lunches.

Emily and Brian Date of Engagement: Nov. 14, 2015; Date of Wedding: Sept. 16, 2017 Beautiful, wooded, tranquil and unique are just a few of the words used to describe a wedding on Squam Lake’s Chocorua Island Chapel. Couples that get married at this special place count themselves very fortunate to say their wedding vows at the wooded outdoor chapel with breathtaking views. Emily’s grandparents retired to the Lakes Region of New Hampshire and Emily always dreamed of getting married on Church Island, where her family worships in the summer months and where her grandfather was a trustee. Vendor Spotlight

On the Rocks Bartending There is no doubt that bar services are on the to-do list for couples planning weddings. With many receptions taking place outside - tented or lakeside - a reliable, creative bartending service is a great addition to any wedding cocktail hour and reception. Says Amanda Thomas of On The Rocks Bartending, “For us, it all starts before contact is even made. Attention to detail is mandatory and that’s why we’re successful at helping achieve a client’s dream party. We are always thinking about how to make a party memorable, especially the bar!” What does that mean for couples hoping to add on a fun bartending service to their wedding reception? “We do so much besides setting up beer, wine and liquor to serve,” explains Amanda. “Every couple is unique in their wants and must-have’s. A lot of people ask us for a basic bar where we come in and serve and leave. Others know we have so much more to offer and utilize all of our services. We love to help create signature drinks and menus. We always ask what the couples envision at their bar.” Craft beer is a huge trend right now, so On the Rocks purchased a state-of-the-art Jockey Box system to pour beer from a tap just like you would find at a bar, with Co2. With a nod to the recent trends of glamour weddings, some couples dream of fancy champagne drinks like a Blackberry Sparkler, which is a blackberry reduction with prosecco and a gold sugar rim (featured in the picture opposite page). If you want to go for other services, Amanda says, “We offer custom cigar bars with custom cigar labels and custom match books. We provide cutters and ashtrays and a great looking glass door humidor. “Other people love what our valet service has to offer so there’s no walking miles to your car in those sexy stilettos you bought to match your perfect dress!” Once a menu is decided and the consulting is over, it’s almost time to party! On the Rocks brings everything that could be needed behind a bar, such as decorative bins for chilling beverages and coolers to keep mass quantities cold so there’s no delay in services. “Our bar set-ups are not just functional; they are nicely dressed with soft lights or other decor to match the decor or theme of the wedding. We get compliments on our arrangements because the bar often gets overlooked. It’s not just a place to order a drink, it’s a spot where many guests congregate. You always run into an old familiar face at the bar!” laughs Amanda. “As a bartender service, we are the ones that people look to for fun. We offer a number of games to be rented for your event, indoors or outdoors. We have beautiful cornhole boards that guests always like. Recently we have been diving into event planning on top of setting up bars and providing waitstaff. We have many resources when it comes to entertainment (bands, DJs, etc.). We are partnered with City Moose Catering, who utilize our staff to serve their food. We

also have Ordained Minister and Justice of the Peace services available. And we have a talented baker who makes custom orders of delicious cupcakes. Amanda offers a list of the popular drinks for upcoming 2018 weddings, whether summertime or winter gatherings:

continued from page 35 Amy & Alicia How does a couple plan for the possibility of snow for a winter wedding? Alicia explains, “There wasn’t a plan in terms of a blizzard. When people think winter wedding they think...OH MY GOSH, what if there is a blizzard? Being afraid of snowy conditions in the winter is not worth the stress. We had clauses worked out with vendors in terms of cancellation; it’s important to make sure you do, so it is mutually agreeable/acceptable for you and your vendors. But truly, we were just going forward with planning like there wouldn’t be any issuues. We knew that most people were local within a couple of hours and not many people were coming from out of town also, so that was probably helpful as well, whereas it might be harder if people were flying in from all over.” The couple shopped for their wedding gowns together. “We’re best friends and we couldn’t really imagine picking them out with anyone else. It was a fun experience and we’re both so different, so trying on different styles was fun to do together. Our dresses were very different, but went so beautifully together...just like the two of us,” Alicia adds. The decor, the flowers, the colors, the ideas...a lot of the wedding planning the couple owe to Alicia’s Aunt Doreen. “She is an amazingly talented individual and put her heart and soul into helping us,” Alicia recalls. “Amy and I are not very savvy when it comes to florals and decor and all the things that are so important to putting a wedding together, so we pretty much told my aunt the colors we thought we wanted (shades of blue and gray) with a rustic/wintery feel and she took it and ran with it. We worked with her along the way in terms of her showing us ideas and asking our input and we were so thrilled with everything. We didn’t once say we didn’t like something she did and wanted it differently, so she continued to work on it and when we saw the finished product the day of we both were so very pleased. The amazing part is that the florals in the pictures are all silk. “My favorite part of the wedding day was dancing to Footloose with my wife. That’s my favorite song and we walked into the reception to that song and danced to it for our first song and it was just a blast. It felt like it was just the two of us together in that room having fun. And then everyone else joined in and danced the night away.” Amy’s favorite part of the wedding day was “when Alicia walked down the aisle to meet me. She looked so beautiful and so happy, which was just how I felt watching her.” continued on page 48

Lance & Lauren Date of Engagement: 5/12/17 Date of Wedding: 9/30/17 When Lance and Lauren were planning their wedding, they knew the location would be at the Akwa Marina Yacht Club in Laconia. Explains Lauren, “Lance’s family owns Akwa Marina; we love Lake Winnipesaukee, so it was an easy choice!” Ceremony and reception were held at the location, right in front of the reception tent overlooking the docks, mountains and lake. With a color scheme of navy, gray and white, the outdoor wedding location matched perfectly to the nautical theme. The weather turned out to be great for the wedding. Lauren continues, “Although it was cloudy and rainy on our late-September wedding day, around 2 pm (an hour before the ceremony) it stopped raining and the sun peeked through right as we were all walking down the aisle! And on the day of, nothing matters - not rain or wind - except for the reason why you are marrying this person.” Both Lance and Lauren agree, “our ‘first look’ gave us about 45 minutes before the ceremony to just have time together (just the two of us and the photographer in a private location). Emily & Brian continued from page 38 It is closer to Emily's family's cottage - about a 10 minute boat ride. Guests took boats from three boating locations in Holderness that took just 20 minutes to get to the Island, and then after the ceremony boated to the Sandwich Town Beach (also 20 minutes) on the other side of the lake to cut down on the bus ride to the reception location. Church Island is a small, non-denominational chapel on Squam Lake. This special place has a rich history: it was originally home to a boys’ camp in the late 1800s, and has been operating as a chapel since 1903. From the moment guests arrive by boat to the Island’s wooden docks, they step into a private, serene and beautiful place, following a pretty pine-needle path to the chapel area. The unique chapel is rustic and open air, with wooden pews, a birch cross, and stone altar. An organ, played with the assistance of one to two people pumping the bellows, and church bells, are also present. Guests can watch old wooden boats go by, and relax in the peace of the wooded Island. Emily credits her mother, Becky, with doing a lot of the coordination. “My mom organized the boat transportation. (She also gets credit for finding amazing wedding vendors.) We used boats from three different boat companies, plus the wooden boat that belongs to a family friend and neighbor. Boats departed from three locations in Holderness and then the boats brought guests to the Sandwich Town Beach after the ceremony. On the way to the ceremony, my dad and I rode in the 1928 wooden boat, and afterward, Brian and I rode in the wooden boat back to our family dock before hopping in a 1963 Ford Mustang.” She continues, “Our photographer (Rodeo & Co Photography) and florist (Emily Herzig Floral Studio) were both wonderful and from New Hampshire, so they were somewhat familiar with the area. Our photographer, Meg Hamilton from Rodeo & Co. Photography, accompanied us to the rehearsal on Friday evening so she could see the Island as well before the ceremony. Both the photographer and the florist had an assistant, so Meg was with me while her assistant was with the boys (Brian and the groomsmen etc.) and on the Island before the ceremony.” Throughout the wedding/ceremony planning process, Emily and her Mom tried to think about everything from the guests’ perspective, especially for guests coming from far away who might never have experienced a unique and beautiful wedding ceremony on an island. They also sought out and listened carefully to advice from everyone, and thought long and hard about what things to incorporate and what to leave out. For example, a casual comment by Becky’s hairdresser that silk scarves would keep the girls’ updo’s from coming undone while on the boat ride, resulted in an easy Amazon order for hot pink scarves! Other favorite details from the ceremony included the program, which was created by Rachel Robinson of Robinson Press in Providence, RI and had a dedication to Brian’s and Emily’s grandparents, as well as a description of Church Island. Emily and Brian wrote their own interfaith ceremony, which was very important to them as well.

Vendor Spotlight On...

Waukewan Golf Club

Prior to becoming a golf course, Waukewan was a working farm known for breeding horses and cattle. It was also the home of Waukewan’s architect and founder, the late Dr. Melvyn Hale (1913-2000). Over the years, renovations and changes were made to the property, and the function facility/barn is used for weddings and events. Recently, renovations have been done to add a wonderful, rustic bar area. The floor space in the barn is about 3,300 sq. ft. Rrenovations began midDecember and were completed by midApril of 2017. Demolition included removing oak paneling and sheetrock ceilings and walls that exposed original wood walls, posts, beams, old hitch rings and ceilings. Once exposed, the original woodworking was preserved and incorporated into the renovations. Materials needed to complete the renovations were sourced locally and included reclaimed barn board and beams from Sharps Lumber in Ashland, NH, white pine bartop fabrication and finishing from Home Grown Lumber in North Conway, NH, blacksmith services from Bristol, NH and local tradesmen to complete renovations. The space can accommodate seating for up to 150 with dance space, and up to 180 guests if a dance space is not required. The barn/bar is open for events from mid-April through mid-December. Examples of the type of functions utilizing the barn are weddings, rehearsal dinners, Celebrations of Life, anniversaries, birthday and Christmas parties. For information and to tour Waukewan, call Kim Hale at 603-279-6661 or email khwaukewan@metrocast.net.

A Little Waukewan Barn History...

The Barn was erected during the 1890s, shortly after construction methods began using sawn beams in favor of the older hand hewn beams, so it was easy to date that construction. The original owners sold the property to the Dane Family from Boston, Mass. In the 1930s, the Dane’s created a gentleman’s farm and primarily used the barn for hay storage while they built an adjoining barn for Clydsdale and Belgian horses. The Danes eventually sold the property to the Hales as described in the “History of Waukewan Golf Club” from the club’s website. The transformation of the function facility took place over many years and included adding a fieldstone fireplace, utilizing stone gathered from the construction of the golf course, building an initial bar in the main floor area of the barn, then later moving the bar to a storage area that had been been previously utilized as a tack room for the horses, adding a loft area for seating, adding a kitchen area with access from outside the barn area, windows, flooring, etc. These improvements took place as early as the mid 1970s and settled down toward the late 1980s to early 1990s. The barn was used on a limited basis, mostly for club socials and for members that wished to have various types of parties such as birthdays, baby showers and the like. Weddings and larger events began to take shape during the mid 1990s and continue through the current period.
