Your Dream Wedding Weekend

Enjoy beautiful mountain views from the rustic barn and vineyard estate

Welcome to your Lakes Region wedding

The lake...romantic, festive and fun... enjoy a lakeside, tented, indoor or backyard celebration. Whatever your location or the season, welcome to your Lakes Region wedding.

Yes it rained...a lot

Getting married in 2023 called for patience, flexibility and a sense of humor.

During the summer and fall of 2023 it rained...a lot. It wasn’t the best weather, admittedly, for a wedding. Couples who postponed their wedding during Covid, or picked a great summer or fall date for their celebration were met with rain.

I should know because my daughter and (now) son-in-law faced a downpour about an hour before their ceremony last summer. Their wedding ceremony and reception were semi-outdoors and tented. But that still meant walking to the tent(s) on rain-soaked lawns and rushing through downpours. Added to that, thunder crashed and my daughter later told me the lights in her hotel room were flickering while she and her bridesmaids were getting dressed.

It could have been a disaster, with friends and family sitting in the tent and waiting for the ceremony to start. My detail-oriented daughter stayed calm and worked with the venue to push the ceremony forward by a half hour, hoping the rain would stop. It did cease and the wedding went off without any further problems. Later, we saw some great photos taken by one of my daughter’s friends/co-workers who took charge as guests waited in the tent. It lightened a stressful moment and made for a fun memory.

Today we laugh about the rain and thunder and possibilty of the lights going out. It wasn’t so funny at that moment, but it really started my daughter and her husband off on the right foot. They saw that married life will occasionally have mishaps, but it is how we face them that count.

Admittedly, the rainy season we just had was a challenge for many couples. That is why it is important to plan ahead. Make sure there are plenty of umbrellas and place them where guests can find them, talk to your event manager for an alternate bad-weather plan, and communicate throughout the wedding process.

It is hoped the weddings of 2024 will be dry and sunny. Rest assured if it happens to rain on your wedding day, the area will still be gorgeous with lake views, the mountains and all the region has to offer. You will get great photos and a little rain might just make for memories to laugh about later.

Happy wedding planning,

Elegant Country Wedding at Gunstock Mountain Resort

Images by Through the Pines Photography

With a large, open space at the reception site, the desire was to create a more intimate area for the head table, highlighting the stone fireplace. When the bride and groom are seated at the table, the tree with its overhanging branches mimicked the feeling of being inside an enchanted forest through the use of moss and wicker globes, soft copper wire lights, cascading strands of greenery, ninebark seed pods, and trailing green amaranthus. The tree itself was made entirely of foraged and hand-twisted bittersweet vines, lending to the natural feel.

Florals/design & this story by Liz Lichtenberg, Winnipesaukee Woods Farm

The groom was wearing a pocket-style boutonniere, which is often requested due to its ease of use and ability to stay in place throughout the day.

(Above left): Bridal bouquet captures the theme of wild elegance with its emphasis on texture. The lightly cascading design utilized asparagus fronds, pennycress, bupleurum, poppy pods, scabiosa, poppies, astilbe, peonies, snapdragons, cosmos, rudbeckia, delphinium, and lisianthus. The final design was accented with hand-dyed silk ribbon in dusty rose and blush.

The rustic lodge at Gunstock offers a mixture of solid stonework, mellow wooden floors and lantern lights.

This gown is a Lillian West style 66201, available at A Day to Remember Bridal Boutique.

The goal was to highlight the rich history of Gunstock Resort, the stonework inside the reception space, and the natural beauty of the surroundings. The theme was enchanted forest to bring all three of these elements together with an emphasis on wild and sophisticated. This goal was reached by bringing in local ceramics artist Sarah Burns of Sweet Fern Pottery. Her work was a perfect fit due to her being influenced by the organic, ever-changing world around us.

Rather than opting for traditional wedding favors, custom bud vases added to the table decor were meaningful keepsakes for guests to take home.

Centerpieces were designed in a low ceramic basket in neutral tones, paired with a hand-forged copper handle. This design allowed for an elegant simplicity, uniting the outdoors with the rustic neutral tones of the space. Designs featured all local flowers including ranunculus, hydrangea, calendula, scabiosa, celosia, zinnia and matricaria.

Weddings and Boating Go Together...Introducing Miss Lauren

The New Hampshire Boat Museum (NHBM) in Wolfeboro, NH has something new for brides and grooms who want wedding photos or a ride on the lake. Miss Lauren, a stunning vintage wooden boat from the NHBM, offers regularly scheduled and charter rides on the northwestern end of Lake Winnipesaukee. What does this mean for a couple on their wedding day who are looking for something beautiful and unique? How about wedding photos when riding in the Miss Lauren?

Launching from North Water Marine’s Paugus Bay location (across from Weirs Beach) on Lake Winnipesaukee, Miss Lauren was added to NHBM’s fleet in the late summer of 2022. “It’s not as well-known yet as the Millie B, which takes couples (and others) on the northeastern part of the lake,” said NHBM Executive Director Martha Cummings. The captained vintage Miss Lauren boat ride is on the Laconia/Meredith end of Lake Winnipesaukee. The boat is a 28-foot, mahogany triple cockpit “woodie” and a near exact replica to Millie B. Both boats offer rides on the lake in the type of boat you just don’t see much anymore: a wooden motorboat.

Rides and charters for the Miss Lauren can be booked online through www.nhbm.org.

For first-look or after-ceremony unique photos while the bride and groom take a romantic boat ride, Miss Lauren awaits!

(Editor’s note: If you have Miss Lauren or Millie B photos taken on a ride before or after your wedding ceremony, please let us know. Submit your photos to lrcomp@metrocast.net and we may use them in a future issue.)

Let the Light Shine at Cold Spring Farm

When you have great views, you want to provide plenty of windows to take in the scenery. That was the goal for Cold Spring Farm in Alton. The barn venue sits atop Alton Mountain; to increase indoor light, glass doors were added in 2023.

Says Cold Spring owner Diane Loudon, “Glass doors were added to brighten up the entire first floor and to provide access to the new deck area. Aside from the fact that they are aesthetically pleasing and match the barn’s windows, they also allow us to close up tightly when weather moves in and to have weddings in the winter.”

The glass doors (2 huge front and back and 5 along the side) were mostly completed in February of 2023 but tweaking and additional parts were arriving until November of 2023.

from page 19

Loudon adds, “The doors make a HUGE difference with our couples. The reactions are positive and appreciative for us having done it. Photos are always featuring the new doors.

“We wanted what is called true divided lights to match the windows and we also wanted solid wooden doors. Each of the front doors weighs over 300 lbs and they are all custom made to fit the spaces. It was a labor of love and design in keeping with the architectural impact of the barn.”

She continues, “We added the side patio to complement the doors this spring and we will continue to work on gardens and perhaps a roof for the patio so outside ceremonies can be done easily if it is inclement weather.”

But there is more big news. Loudon adds, “We have purchased a large tent for our couples to use as needed. We also finished the split rail fencing, adding some grace to the pastures.”

With the renovations and additions, weddings can now be held year around. Loudon says, “We had a lovely wedding last February, 2023 on a perfect snowy day.”

Wedding flowers come in all types, sizes and colors. But this year, says Rebecca, owner of Branch & Bloom Floral Boutique in Wolfeboro, NH, “The trend that seems to be most often requested heading into the next wedding season is brighter colors and mixed bouquets. This is a relatively conservative part of the country so we will always have lots of traditional couples requesting neutral colors - but there have been quite a few requests for more vivid colors this year.”

Sheena continues, “Pets - on cakes, on drink stirrers and cocktail napkins, having signature drinks named after a pet, or couples giving pet treats instead of favors to guests are all popular.”

Brides are choosing a specific color for their bridesmaid’s gowns/dresses, but are encouraging those in the wedding party to choose a shade and dress style they prefer; thus bridesmaids may all be wearing varying shades of green, perhaps, or even every woman in a different color but all pastels, for example.

For place settings/decor, gold is still hot, while vintage china and colored glassware continue to rise in popularity.

For dessert, it is super trendy to have a 1-2 tier cake for cutting, but to also offer a dessert buffet with a variety of sweets for guests.

Says Sheena, “A late night snack is happening at most weddings these days. It is another way to take care of guests.”

A Rainy & Romantic Wedding

Arainy, foggy October weekend didn’t mar the celebration of Ashley and Brandon and their guests and wedding party.

Ashley grew up by Lake Winnipesaukee (her family owns the Bay Side

Inn in Alton Bay), so she is used to the changes in the weather. The wedding was about bringing friends and family together to celebrate the wedding more than it was the weather.

With a wedding rehearsal lakeside at the inn, the couple later spent the evening at the Lakeport Opera House for a fun rehearsal dinner event.

The entire wedding day was beautiful from the lakeside vow exchange to the tented reception with a mariachi band as a surprise gift from Ashley’s mother.

On the wedding day, a full band took the stage for dinner and dancing. The Wedding Pros

Jenny and Showly

Wedding ceremony & reception at private Lake Opechee property

Photos this story by Once Like a Spark

Although Jenny and Showly live in Boston, both grew up in New Hampshire. Their families still live in New Hampshire and Jenny’s grandfather had a boat on Lake Winnipesaukee and lived in the area so it’s a special place.

The couple’s wedding was held at the Lake Opechee property of family friends. Says Jenny, “The owner graciously let us use an open piece of property right on the lake to make our vision come to life.”

The couple planned most of the wedding, but Sheena at Showcase Events really helped problem solve the details, such as who was doing what and when. Jenny explains, “We knew what we wanted but it was overwhelming because it was an open piece of property and we had to bring everything in.

“The colors were neutral (all white flowers and greenery, tan napkins, tan suits) and the bridesmaid’s dresses were dusty rose; since we were on the lake and it was summertime, we wanted the natural beauty to stand out and keep it light, fresh and classic.”

The rainy forecast was difficult; “It was harder because we committed to an outdoor wedding with no real backup of an indoor plan, but we did secure a rain tent (an extra sailcloth tent for the ceremony put aside for us in case we needed it on the day-off) which gave us peace of mind. Our coordinators, vendors, friends and family helped us so much by keeping a positive attitude and everyone danced the night away in the rain under our tents! Showly and I kept a positive attitude. Always have back-up plans for things that keep you up at night and then just roll with it knowing that you did everything you could. For example… rain tent, extra umbrellas, etc.,” explains Jenny.

Says Emily, “Josh and I met at the Huot Technical Center in high school taking a Digital Media Arts class together. Josh was the class clown and I was over high school altogether. But over time we became very close friends, even staying in touch when I went to Chicago to pursue film. I had a total crush on him and even sent him a love letter my freshman year of college when he was dating someone else...that summer when I came back he didn’t have that girlfriend anymore, and the rest is history. (Good thing he liked me back!)”

She continues, “The camp wedding theme is based on our favorite movie Moonrise Kingdom. The basis of the movie is two kids running away together because they are in love and it’s set in the late 1960s. Highly recommend you watch it to better understand what we were going for.

“I attended Girl Scout camp my entire childhood and have fond memories of that aesthetic. The island that we got married on (Church Island) was established by local Boy Scouts in 1908.”

All the thermoses and extra goodies at the reception were thrifted over the years with the wedding in mind.

The couple booked the ceremony location of Church Island before booking their reception at Waukewan Golf Club in Center Harbor. Emily remembers, “Once we had a date locked in, we played around with different reception venue ideas based on who was available and who was affordable. Waukewan was the middle (geographical) point between the boat launch and where we wanted our guests to stay in Weirs Beach for an after-party. We wanted a smaller wedding (75 guests MAX). Once I met Kathy, the wedding coordinator at Waukewan, it was a perfect match. cont. on page 66

Janna & Brian October 4, 2023 at NH Mountain Inn

from pg. 57

Initially Janna and Brian found the NH Mountain Inn on Airbnb, but after contacting the owner the couple discovered the inn also provides full property rental for events. Says Janna, “By comparison, the value for our event provided a longer entertaining time than other venues.

“The best part of our wedding that would have only worked at this venue was our ability to have our ceremony, live band and DJ. The reception was truly an entertainment marathon that allowed us to dance for 12 hours,” Janna adds.

“The venue also has a pool house; it was the perfect setup to host our guests the day prior to our ceremony for a pool party and flag football game on the green lawn.”

The couple and 25 guests stayed at the inn. The wedding had a total of 80 guests. The couple’s advice:

“We booked two nights prior to the wedding at the inn and the day following to check out. We wish we had booked one more day after the ceremony to enjoy more time with our guests.” cont. on page 65

Brianna & Troy - from pg. 46

“I was looking at different botanical gardens in NH that allowed weddings and my fiance reminded me that our friend, Lindsey Tarbin, was a co-owner of Tarbin Gardens in Franklin, NH. After looking at photos, touring the gardens and talking with Lindsey, I was set that was where we had to get married. It was so gorgeous,” says Brianna of her springtime 2023 wedding at Tarbin Gardens.

Wedding photos are all-important and the couple chose Amanda Martignetti of SugarShotz Photography.

Brianna’s gown was highlighted with a beautiful, eye-catching cape from a seller on Etsy. Brianna says, “I was never one of the little girls who pictured her wedding or her dress, but a few months before we got engaged, I learned wedding capes were a thing, and immediately knew I had to have one.

“The detailed cape led me to choose a simple gown. Because the cape would be draped in the back, I wanted my dress to have an open or pretty back. I am also a little bit of a nerd, and both the gown and cape had aspects that reminded me of some of my favorite books and movies!

“For the wedding and reception, chairs were from Taylor Rental Center in Belmont, New Hampshire. The rest of the decor was purchased online.”

For the catering, the bride says, “We ordered food from Rossi’s in New Hampton, New Hampshire and designated a family member to pick it up after the ceremony. It was Italian food: pasta, lasagna, chicken parmesan, meatballs, bread, etc.

“Dessert for the guests was bundtinis from Nothing Bundt Cakes in Burlington, Massachusetts.

“Our baker split both the cake tiers in half and frosted them as one cake (her idea since my husband and I had different flavors in mind). My half of the cake was a layer of brownie for the base, then Oreo filling, chocolate cake, more Oreo filling, and another layer of chocolate cake. Troy’s half was the same, but instead of Oreo filling, he had a layer of peanut butter filling and a layer of chocolate filling. It was all frosted together with a vanilla buttercream. My coworker and friend, Anna Weaver, made our cake. She used some of the extra flowers I had from my bouquet to decorate the cake.”

A special touch was the table designs. Brianna says, “I made the paper flowers on the reception tables from Harry Potter books.”

The day-of coordinator was Robin Gagnon.

The music was by We the DJ. “We had Rico and he was fantastic. We gave him free rein of the music for the reception, and it was a great choice.”

The honeymoon was spent in Turks and Caicos, specifically South Caicos. Brianna recalls, “We basically had the entire resort to ourselves, and it was amazing!”

Brianna’s advice for those planning a wedding: “As stressful as it is, the wedding is worth it. I didn’t want a big wedding; I would’ve been fine with a small ceremony with close family. Although it wasn’t what I or my husband originally wanted, we don’t regret doing the ‘big wedding’ (ours would probably be considered small with only 67 guests). Everyone enjoyed themselves and thinking back on the day makes all of the stress worth it and we now have great memories. Don’t worry about the little things because you won’t notice them the day-of. If there are things you want to do on your wedding day (specific photos, quick time away with your partner, etc.), make sure you share that information with someone close to you who can make sure it all gets done. It is a whirlwind, and you will definitely forget things. “My biggest piece of advice is to make it a priority to stay with your other half throughout the day/night after the ceremony. You would think this would happen naturally, but you both get pulled in separate directions.”

Emily and Josh cont. from page 51 they allowed us to come in and decorate the day before for a small fee and visit a few times in the months before for last minute planning. Cannot say enough good about them.”

Emily recalls, “In the summer of 2022, Josh and I came to visit my parents and we were out on Squam Lake when someone mentioned we should check out Church Island. We had never been there before but upon arrival it was magical. We walked through the woods up to the altar with the big cross and everything felt like it was falling into place, like we were meant to be there.”

Emily’s advice: “Get a wedding planner. Even if you can only afford them for the day before and the day-of hire someone to keep your timeline on time. My husband and I and sometimes my parents played this role of getting people from A to B but it was very stressful and certain elements were forgotten. The day-of, I learned to let go of anything that didn’t happen, but I could’ve avoided the anxiety attack the day before when we were decorating and I found out our officiant had Covid and we had to find a replacement the same day on top of doing everything else. Hired help would have been nice.”

Jenny and Showly cont. from pg. 41

Reflecting on the wedding, the couple say their favorite part of the day was being surrounded by their closest family and friends. “It’s a feeling that is hard to describe, with so much love and support on our big day,” says Jenny.

The bride’s advice for those planning a wedding is helpful. She says, “Spend time imagining what you want your day to look like and what is most important for you and your future husband on the big day. For example, for us it was having a specific band, so we picked the date around that. We knew we wanted the wedding to be outside and a family friend graciously offered his property. Then everything else really fell into place; I think there’s so much pressure (at least I felt it!) based on what you see people post on Instagram and Pinterest to have this picture-perfect wedding but some things are unattainable, especially if you’re on a budget. We stuck to what was most important, made decisions and kept moving forward.

“Don’t spend so much time second guessing the ‘what ifs/what could have been’, if your centerpieces are ‘grand’ enough, or if you picked the right napkin color. In the end, those things don’t matter. Your guests care about seeing you happy, having good food, and enjoying good music! So that’s what we prioritized.”

Jenny continues, “It is cool to see brides doing different things than what is considered traditional to make their day truly their own. For me, that meant having both my mom and my dad walk me down the aisle, and sharing a first dance with each of them (non-traditional). Also, riding to the ceremony together with Showly, our parents and our wedding party on a trolley together cont. on pg. 69

(after a first look) instead of arriving separately (another non-traditional thing). Again, this goes back to imagining what you want your day to look like and doing what YOU want.”

After meeting at a mutual workplace, Sarah and Daniel were great friends for months. Eventually he asked Sarah to join his band and says Sarah, “We kept up with each other daily when the (Covid) shutdown occured.” Daniel sent Sarah new songs to listen to every day, and they met up a few times to play music together. “We began dating in June of 2020,” she recalls.

“Sheryl at the Andover Barn was our day-of coordinator and ensured we had all of our vendors booked and she helped facilitate the day-of, but we completed all the wedding planning ourselves. Seeing our vision come to life at the Andover Barn after all of our efforts was magical!”
