Editor’s Letter

With Love, the Lake...

“I want to get married by the lake.” “We love the Lakes Region. It’s our happy place and we want to get married there.” “I’ve always dreamed of a wedding by the lake.” These are often-heard sentiments of couples planning a Lakes Region wedding. The recent pandemic surely has not stopped that idea and indeed, the desire for lakeside weddings has only increased. At Lakes Region Bride, we know couples love the area and especially the lakes and mountains. This year, we decided to bring the lakes front-and-center and it was a joy to plan a wedding photo shoot as close to the water as possible (page 9). We also sought a Real Wedding Story that took place lakeside at the Margate on Winnipesaukee in Laconia (page 43). These beautiful photos show just how special the lake is and how it enhances a wedding. The area has so many great places, so we are also featuring weddings at some fabulous locations in the Lakes Region countryside. Each and every wedding is full of wonderful ideas to inspire. The good news is that Lakes Region wedding professionals offer so much creativity and expertise, you cannot go wrong with a celebration in the area. Read on and enjoy the lakes and the mountains and - of course - your wonderful Lakes Region wedding. Happy wedding planning,

36 LAKES REGION BRIDE

Mikaela & John Date of engagement: March 29, 2020 Date of wedding: July 24, 2021 Wedding location: Birch Hill Farm, Gilford NH Primary wedding color was navy with blush accents When family is important to a couple, bringing the ideas of the families to fruition and taking advantage of the phenomenal views are priorities. Making the wedding planning much easier for this wedding was Creations by Collis, a skilled wedding planner. Says Mikaela, “My parents insisted we hire a wedding planner because they wanted the process to be fun and relaxing and not stressful. Our wedding planner was great - we kept in touch regularly throughout the process of planning via email, Zoom and phone calls. The continued on page 38

planner and her staff did all the setup, decorating and break down for the day-of, which was a huge help. She also coordinated all of the vendors, the arrival times and the timeline for the day-of. We wanted to be able to enjoy the time with our friends and family and having the wedding planner coordinating everything for the day-of allowed us to do that.” With about a year to plan the wedding, the couple were looking for a relaxed, beautiful venue in the Lakes Region and Birch Hill Farm was perfect. They wanted a place where they could “gather all our friends and family outdoors. I really loved the idea of the do-it-yourself type of venue because I had a very specific image in my mind of what I wanted the day to look like,” says Mikaela. “We toured Birch Hill with my parents and my sister and everyone just fell in love with the beautiful setting so we knew it was the perfect place to host our wedding.”

The wedding had about 150 guests, and the weather was, recalls Mikaela, “Absolutely beautiful. We felt so lucky - we thought it would be hot since it was July but the temperature was 75 and it was sunny with some scattered clouds throughout the afternoon. “We had six bridesmaids and groomsmen; I had a maid of honor and a man of honor (my two siblings) and then four bridesmaids and John had a best man and then five other groomsmen. The wedding professionals were chosen mostly by word of mouth and recommendations from either our wedding planner or the owner of our venue. Most of the vendors we met with or spoke with prior to hiring to ask questions and just get a feel for their style. We chose vendors who really made us feel comfortable and shared our vision.” The wedding menu consisted of appetizers - a stationary crudites table, a cheese and cracker table and a raw bar with shrimp cocktail and oysters. There also were four passed hors d’oeuves, which were mozzarella and tomato skewers, chicken with a peanut sauce, crab cakes and melon and prosciutto. Dinner was sliced tenderloin and chicken piccata with roasted red potatoes and asparagus. The three-layer cake had two flavors: lemon cake with lemon frosting and a white cake with a fresh strawberry frosting. Mikaela says she “would definitely recommend doing first look photos before the wedding ceremony. We got so many of the pictures done early and then were able to really enjoy the cocktail hour with our guests. I would also recommend planning not only ‘who’ you want in pictures but ‘where’ at your venue you want to take them. I would definitely recommend having a wedding planner because planning a wedding is hard and there are SO many things you don’t even think of until you have an expert ask you about them. We did not have a videographer and I regret it only because I wish I had gotten the speeches on video. If you don’t have a videographer then I recommend assigning someone to video the speeches because it goes by so quickly, and you really want to be able to listen again because you miss a lot in the excitement of the day.”

REAL WEDDING STORY

Komal & Bandish at Locke Falls Farm

Neubek Photographers

LAKES REGION BRIDE 39

A beautiful Pakistani-American wedding at Locke Falls Farm in Tamworth, NH took place in the late summer. The wedding and family gathering had great food, colors, and meaning. The wedding with an outdoor ceremony and reception offered a continuation of the celebration.

40 LAKES REGION BRIDE

Komal and Bandish Date of engagement: January 7, 2020 Date of Wedding Celebration: August 20-28, 2021 Says bride Komal, “We met at Harvard University. I proposed to Bandish by writing a note that asked, ‘Will you marry me Bandish?’ and I hid it under his cocktail napkin at the bar. It was fun! After we got engaged, it took me a year or longer to plan the wedding.” The couple chose beautiful Locke Falls Farm in Tamworth, NH for their Pakistani/American wedding ceremony and reception. Explains Komal, “We always wanted a barn wedding in the forest and mountains. We love NH; it is one of our favorite states. We have so many memories doing winter and summer activities and celebrating a few important events like my birthdays and day trips in the state. New Hampshire was always our priority where we wanted to get married. We were staying at Tamworth once and I just read the sign for Locke Falls Farm. I remembered that later when I was looking for barn venues. I contacted Locke Falls Farm and we scheduled a tour and met Debra, the owner. It was the first barn venue we visited, and we were in love at first sight.” The property seemed to check off all the boxes for the couple, from their desire for a spot that offered room to spread out to a private, country location. Komal says, “I decided on Locke Falls Farm because the venue is beautiful and magical, and Debra happily allowed my cat and dog to stay with me over the week of the wedding. I felt very connected to Debra. We were flexible with the wedding day, but we wanted to get married in late summer, such as in August. Debra found a week for us from her busy calendar where we could do our four days of wedding events. The days worked perfectly for us.” The dog and cat are beloved pets of the couple, and the dog, Beckham, was also in the wedding party! “We have a cute Siamese cat, named Barack, as well,” adds Komal. The family and friends are close, and there were 50 guests at the celebration. That meant, according to Komal, a great deal of planning to pull off the wedding. Recalling the process, she says, “I did all the planning and it was a lovely and memorable experience for me. Bandish says I have been planning since I was a little girl. I tell him it was never posible without having a partner like you,” she says. Concerning the planning, Komal spent one to two hours daily, and six months before the wedding, it was more like four to six hours daiy. She reached out to wedding vendors, reviewed proposals, and prioritized the major parts of the event that reflected their personalities. One major part of the wedding was music. “We love 1970s to 80s music, legendary bands, Punjabis, 90s Bollywood and dhool. After inquiring for two to three bands, I was blessed to have Scott from Speechless Band and Rakesh our DJ. We choreographed the dances on the Mehndi and wedding days. Our friends, family and Bandish and I practiced for about two to three months,” Komal says. The sequence of events were: 1. A pre-wedding party, Aug. 20 in Massachusetts; 2. Maiyon, Aug. 21 (traditional bridal and groom shower) at their Massachusetts home; Locke Fall Farm events: 3. Mehndi, Aug. 23 (henna party with music and dance; 4. Rehearsal Dinner, Aug. 24; 5. Wedding Day, Aug. 25; 6. After-Wedding Brunch, Aug. 26; 7. Farewell Dinner, Aug. 28 in Boston, Massachusetts. The flowers were beautiful - and Komal had specific colors in mind. She says, “I had orange, yellow and green for the bridal shower. Red and yellow and all bright colors for the Mehndi. For the wedding day, I had specifically olive green (my favorite color) and white with some touches of gold.” Komal and Bandish love world cuisine, and wanted dishes from different parts of the world that they like. Lunch was a taco bar; cocktail hour food was Lamb Kofta, Bacon Wrapped Stilton Stuffed Dates, Artisanal Cheese Charcuterie Boards, and oyster bar. Dinner was Chicken Marsala with fettuccini, Mujadara, Scallion pancakes with soy sauce, Bang Bang Cauliflower and Steamed Baby Potatoes. Komal’s favorite part of the wedding was exchanging vows and “my first look with my Dad on the wedding day.” She also says, “I loved writing my wedding ceremony; I was up three nights to write it down. It was an emotional time. I wanted it to reflect Christian religious beliefs and also what defines us as a couple.” Bandish adds his favorite parts of the wedding were vows and the first look on continued on page 61 Mehndi Day. “We were able to customize our vows, readings, and ceremony to be the perfect fit for us as a couple.” -Mariah, the bride

44 LAKES REGION BRIDE

Mariah & Jake Date of engagement: March 27, 2020 Date of wedding: September 4, 2021 Says Mariah, “We met at Le Moyne College in Syracuse, NY and have been dating since our sophmore year.” Wedding Planning: “After becoming engaged, it took us almost a year and a half to plan the wedding,” she says. The Margate in Laconia was the location for the wedding. With the couple’s deep fondness for the Lakes Region, the Margate was the perfect wedding venue with a lakefront pavilion for the ceremony and a tent with gorgeous lake views for the reception. Mariah explains, “My parents have owned a summer home in Meredith Bay for over 30 years; I grew up there. After introducing the Lakes Region to my husband, it has grown to be our favorite and most cherished place.” With around 160 guests, planning was important for the wedding day. Says Mariah, “My mom and I planned the wedding ourselves, and knowing the area really helped. Our event coordinator at the Margate, Ashton, was also very helpful.” Because it was an outdoor wedding, Mariah recalls, “I really crossed my fingers (and toes) about the weather. Having a covered tent in case of incliment weather really put my mind at ease, but with the beautiful lake views I was not willing to move the wedding indoors. “Our meal was catered by Hart’s Turkey Farm, a staple to anyone who knows the area. The buffet consisted of Butternut Squash Ravioli, Prime Rib, and the ‘OG’ Turkey with all the fixings.” The bride’s favorite part of her wedding day “was definitley the amazing fireworks ending.” The groom’s favorite part was, he says, “Seeing Mariah walk down the aisle.” The couple’s advice for others planning a wedding, is to take your time planning and try not to sweat the small stuff. Not everything will go as planned, but it will still be perfect! After the wedding, the couple spent a wonderful honeymoon in Hawaii, with 5 days in Maui and 4 days in Kauai. Says Mariah, “My husband planned the honeymoon and balanced it perfectly with adventure and relaxing days at the resort.”

cally change our plans, or wait it out to see if we could continue with the wedding that resembled our original ideas. We started to look at the biggest risk factors based on what we knew at the time, and how we could plan accordingly to keep guests and vendors safe, and COVID-free. We needed plenty of space to distance, limited time indoors, free flowing air, extra masks, plenty of sanitizer, and some good luck! It was entirely a blessing that Whiteface Hollow had so much space and free flowing mountain air to ensure that our guests felt safe and comfortable. In the end, we didn’t have to change our initial plans too much. John and Jennifer provided guidance along the way, sharing the protocols and procedures they put in place and kept us informed on any NH state regulation changes that might impact our wedding. In order to pull this off, it really required that we over-planned, had backup plans, and over communicated everything to our guests. We wanted to ensure that those who joined us to celebrate felt comfortable coming and knew that we were taking the appropriate measures.” The couple’s advice for others planning a wedding, is “Keep your guests informed, and be super transparent about guest count, have precautions in place, etc. We used our wedding website’s homepage to share all the details (tables 6 ft apart, mask requirements, hand sanitizer available, etc). We live-streamed our ceremony for guests who weren’t comfortable attending, and this allowed them to share in our special day without having to put themselves at risk. We constantly tried to remind each other what our wedding was all about, and I think that mindset set us up to be flexible and laid back through the stresses of planning a wedding during a global pandemic. Be realistic and objective, and make decisions based on what you CAN control. Always have a backup plan for a worst case scenario.” continued on pg. 79

Wedding Day Wonderful Sarah and Brady at The Wolfeboro Inn

48 LAKES REGION BRIDE

Sarah & Brady

Date of engagement: December 22, 2020 Date of wedding: October 16, 2021 Sarah grew up vacationing at Lake Winnipesaukee and Brady has always loved the lake. Says Sarah, “We wanted a mini-destination wedding - a spot that could be a weekend getaway for most of our New England guests but wasn’t too far away. The Wolfeboro Inn was the second (and last) venue we looked at. We fell in love with the beautiful lakeside view and the quaint atmosphere of the Inn. It ended up being the perfect venue.” With 10 months to plan their wedding, the couple chose warm autumn colors - shades of terracotta, blush, dusty rose, rust, and gold accents. There were 130 wedding guests, and Sarah and Brady decided upon a lakeside tented wedding. Sarah explains, “It was beautiful but being a lakeside wedding and also tented requires help! We actually did a lot of the planning ourselves. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the planning process and coordinating colors, decor, etc. The Wolfeboro Inn staff took care of organizing the tent rental and they did all the day-of coordinating. Our moms also helped with some details like putting together our wedding favors and making some of the signage.” An outdoor event calls for good weather. Sarah recalls, “All week the forecast was calling for heavy rain, but when we woke up the morning of our wedding day it was warm and sunny! If it did rain, we were going to have the ceremony across the street at First Christian Church of Wolfeboro, and then we would still be able to have the reception under the tent.” The wedding meal was a sit-down dinner, with a choice of braised short rib or roasted chicken. The dessert was a funfetti cake with buttercream frosting. The couple says the entire day was so magical that it’s hard to pick a favorite part. Says Sarah, “Both of us would probably say it was the people who celebrated with us. We’ve never experienced anything more special than having all our friends and family together in one place. Brady and I kept describing it as feeling like guests at our own wedding - we just had so much fun. From our first look to our vows to our dance floor, it was truly the most incredible day of our lives.” The couple give this advice for others planning a wedding: “Try to have fun with the process! Remember that although it’s certainly one of the biggest days of your life, it’s just one day in what will hopefully be a lifelong marriage. It’s not going to be perfect - there will be things that don’t go as planned. But at the end of the day you get to marry the love of your life - and that’s what’s important.” After all that planning and a wonderful wedding day, Sarah and Brady honeymooned at Banff/Lake Louise (in Alberta, Canada).
