“The best part about Castle in the Clouds is the incredible history behind it all and that it will be around for so many years to come.” - Jessica
36 LAKES REGION BRIDE
Curtis and Jessica Date of engagement: August 4, 2018 Date of wedding: August 24, 2019 (an evening 5 pm wedding) Jessica, who is a wedding coordinator on staff at Castle in the Clouds, helps many couples plan their Castle weddings each year. In August, the tables were turned when Jessica and her fiancé, Curtis, were married in a beautiful Castle wedding. With a unique viewpoint of knowing the wedding venue very, very well and the experience of planning the weddings of others, Jessica brought a lot of insight into planning her wedding. Jessica says, “Since starting at the Castle in 2013, I’ve seen a little bit of everything! Over the years I’ve learned the things that are absolutely important on your wedding day and the things that really won’t matter. Vendor choices came easy for me since I’ve worked with them for so long and knew who would fit my style the best. continued on page 38

Curtis and Jessica continued from page 37 “Once I made the decision to have my wedding at Castle in the Clouds, I knew I wanted to create an evening that made me feel like I wasn’t at work, and we did just that. My office is located within the reception space, which I’m often in more than I’m home, so we decided that we would have an outdoor tented reception in the field on the property. This allowed us to customize every single thing about our reception and it was spectacular! Many of Castle in the Clouds’ staff and management team helped to make it as perfect as it all was, and it wouldn’t have been the same without them!” With a guest list of 160 people, the weather was definitely a consideration for an outdoor wedding. What was the contingency plan in case of rain for the ceremony on the Castle lawn? Jessica explains, “If it was just a light rain, the Castle provides clear umbrellas for all guests to use and the wedding ceremony can still be done outside. If it is a heavy rain, the indoor space of the Carriage House can be used. We got super lucky with a beautiful 73 degree afternoon.” The bridesmaids wore various shades of rusty rose and blush tones. The groomsmen wore dark blue suits, and the florals consisted of primarily whites, ivory, and some pale blush with tons of greenery everywhere. The decor also included gold accents and a lot of candlelight. The bride’s absolute favorite moment was “spending the evening with every person we love the most in our lives. We had the greatest night celebrating our love with them while so much happiness surrounded us.” Here is some advice from Jessica, who has planned so many weddings in her job at Castle in the Clouds. “I always tell couples not to rush into making any decisions while planning. There’s venues and vendors out there for everyone and it’s best to find the ones that will fit their personalities the most. This leads to an amazing event tailored to everything you both dreamed of. Also be sure to enjoy every single moment of your wedding day! It truly goes by so fast and it’s silly to stress out about those little details that won’t matter in the end. Take deep breaths and remember what the day is all about. So much love surrounds you that entire day and it’s the best feeling! “I truly love the Castle! Getting to work here and see the view every single day makes me the happiest. The best part about Castle in the Clouds is the incredible history behind it all and that it will be around for so many years to come. It’s unique, with the trolley rides up to the Castle, and you really can’t beat the view. It’s the perfect venue to show your guests the natural beauty of New Hampshire.” continued on page 66

Ryan & Jessica Date of engagement: December 2017; Date of wedding: August 2019 “We wanted our wedding to be a true family affair and a representation of us,” says Jessica about her lakeside wedding. “Ryan and I are very close to our families - his in NH and mine in Maine - so we wanted a location that would be convenient for travel, meant something to us, and had places nearby where our guests could stay. Ryan’s parent’s lakehouse property met all those criteria. The house has a lot of family history - it had been Ryan’s late paternal grandparents’ house, his dad grew up there, his late maternal grandmother lived there, his parents now live there, it’s just down the road from Ryan’s childhood home, and we visit every summer and winter. We already have many beautiful memories of being there together and it seemed like a great place to officially start our future together among family and friends. Not to mention the beauty of Lake Winnipesaukee in the background!” continued on page 44

REAL WEDDING STORY
Giana and Greg’s
weekend wedding Kate Donovan Photography
Date of engagement: August 25, 2018; Date of wedding: September 14, 2019 Surrounded by friends and family...this is the dream of many couples as they take their vows and celebrate their wedding. When Giana and Greg decided on Longlook Farm in Sanbornton, NH for their wedding venue, it was a good choice for their needs. “We loved that we got the venue from Thursday to Sunday and the property was so beautiful. It has the look and feel we were searching for and we could bring our dog, Obi, so that was a big plus!” Giana says. The wedding day saw the couple surrounded by family and friends in a rustic, yet beautiful location. The ceremony was outdoors, overlooking the NH mountains. With 120 guests in attendance, the couple watched the weather closely in case of rain on the mid September weekend.
“The property was so beautiful. And we could bring our dog, Obi, so that was a big plus!” Giana says. Planning was important, and Giana explains, “We got a tent just in case it rained, and I know some people also use the barn (at Longlook) as a back-up plan as well.” Creations by Collis brought Giana’s vision of her wedding to life. “I gave Sherri (at Creations by Collis) my wedding Pinterest and explained what I was looking for and she made it come to life. She suggested some vendors as well. And, she set up the rehearsal dinner seating, helped us walk through the rehearsal of the wedding and set up the barn beautifully,” says Giana. continued on page 72 42 LAKES REGION BRIDE

Ryan and Jessica, continued from page 41 Jessica’s favorite wedding day memory is family-related. She says, “In sticking with the theme of family - my favorite memory of the day was our first dance. Ryan and I thought the first dance might be kind of awkward if it was just the two of us ‘on display’ for 3 minutes, so we broke our song (‘Book of Love’ by Peter Gabriel) into three parts. At first Ryan and I took the dance floor alone, per tradition, but then about 1 minute into the song we asked our parents to join us, and then to close out the song we asked all happy couples to come to the dance floor (which transitioned flawlessly into a packed dance floor all night long). Having our parents join our first dance created a really powerful and touching moment of togetherness, family, and love. It also allowed us to thank them for all they had done for us (in terms of the wedding and in life) even though we forewent most wedding traditions, such as the father-daughter dance and rehearsal dinner toasts. We got really beautiful photos of us and our parents dancing. It was a beautiful tribute to love, marriage, family, and friends.” Ryan adds, “After dinner, Jessie and I opened some high-quality champagne my uncle had gifted us and we walked around to all our guests, pouring champagne and cheers-ing with each table individually. It was a great way to share a special moment with each of our guests and allowed us to make sure we saw and talked to everyone. It was something unique our guests will remember and it made them feel included and very welcome.” Jessica offers some advice for those planning a wedding: 1. Make a separate wedding email. You’ll get new discount codes and it’ll be easy to track items as they ship. 2. Buy things you can re-use. For keepsakes, Jessica bought two dessert plates, mini dessert forks, and champagne flutes inexpensively - not personalized, but they matched the wedding. The set is plain so the couple can use them for any occasion; they plan to use them every year for their anniversary at a minimum.

Kevin & Ashley
LAKES REGION BRIDE 45
46 LAKES REGION BRIDE
Date of Engagement: November 2018; Date of Wedding: August, 2019 What led Ashley and Kevin to choose a lakeside wedding at Akwa Marina Yacht Club when they were looking for the all-important wedding venue? Says Ashley, “Both my mother and my father vacationed on Lake Winnipesaukee when they were kids. It is actually where my mother’s parents met! Growing up, my family spent two weeks on the lake every summer and my parents eventually bought a house on the lake. When Kevin and I began dating in 2010, he quickly fell in love with the lake life. When he popped the question, we both knew we wanted to get married here. We ended up choosing Akwa because of the beautiful waterfront views. It also provided amenities such as the beach bar for the after-party and houses that each of our families could rent to spend the week and get ready for the big day.” What was the contingency plan in case of rain? Ashley laughs, “Our contingency plan was to dance in the rain! A lot of people asked me about this, but I was never worried about the rain. If needed, we could have moved the chairs and archway under the tent but I know my photographer, Cole Harper, would have caught some really cool shots if it did rain!” (The arch was provided by Akwa Marina, the draping was done by divine inspirations and the flowers were made by Ashley’s cousin, Kayla Sweed, who also did all of the centerpieces and decor.) The tent roping and stakes were concealed by plants, something Ashley’s mother had seen in a magazine.
“My favorite part of the day was the dancing. After all the planning and formalities, it was nice to be able to have fun and enjoy the day,” says Kevin. The guest list totaled 175, and the wedding dinner was catered by Hart’s Turkey Farm Restaurant. It was buffet style steak tips, lemon chicken, Caesar salad, Orzo salad and a mashed potato bar. Ashley adds, “My favorite part of the day was when my sister, who was my maid of honor, gave her speech. She was 12 when Kevin and I started dating, so Kevin has been in her life since she was little. She is my best friend and Kevin is like her older brother. She definitely knows us better than anyone. Her speech was unbelievable and really made me laugh and cry - she killed it!” Kevin says, “My favorite part of the day was the dancing. After all the planning and formalities, it was nice to be able to have fun and enjoy the day. The DJ was awesome and played really good music. We had a fun crowd, too, so the party was going.” continued on page 48 LAKES REGION BRIDE 47
Kevin & Ashley continued from page 47 The couple’s advice for those currently planning a wedding is, “First, try not worrying too much about the weather. It is out of your control and can cause too much stress and anxiety. In case of inclement weather, the tent company provided siding that could be put up that day and we ordered fans to keep guests cool if it got too hot. The best part of a tented/outdoor wedding is you can get creative. The tent is a blank canvas and playing around to make it your own is the best part.” Ashley and Kevin’s wedding vendors: Venue: Akwa Marina Yacht Club Photographer: Cole Harper/GraphiCole Photography Videographer: Connor Dever Florist: Kayla Sweed Hair/makeup: Five Diamond Salon Catering: Hart’s Turkey Farm Restaurant Officiant: Jackie Spillane (the groom’s godfather) The after party was at Akwa’s Marina’s beach bar. Ashley says, “This was a huge hit after the wedding, as people were able to walk right over to continue the party. We provided finger foods for people to munch on after a long night of dancing.”

Jessica found these vendors offered high-quality work at reasonable prices, and she felt comfortable knowing they had the Lakes Region Bride stamp of approval! If you’re having a tented wedding and doing all the planning/decorating, ask the rental company if you can arrange pick up for two or three days after the wedding. “Trust me, you’ll be glad to not be taking down tables the morning after your wedding!” she shares.

The Latest in Weddings for 2020
Couples are creating a unique experience for a more select group of guests. Meaning has become far more couple reflective than ever before. Greenery is the new floral. And, multi-day celebrations are taking the place of a traditional few hours of fun. These are the trends for 2020 and 2021, and if you’re about to get married, you’re in for a superb time. Micro Weddings One of the biggest trends in weddings right now is the micro-wedding. While the large guest list is still popular, some couples are choosing a smaller number of guests so they can celebrate with people they truly, deeply love and creating a more unique experience. The micro-wedding trend though, does not mean the wedding budgets are getting smaller. “What we’re seeing is couples choosing to have less guests with the same budget, so they can spoil their loved ones more,” says Sherri Collis, CEO of Creations by Collis, a wedding planning company in New Hampshire. “The quality of the venue, the food and wine, and the entertainment is so important to our couples now, so they are choosing a smaller guest list so they can have exactly what they want with people they really love,” Sherri continues. In some instances, the micro-wedding trend is extending to luxury elopements and for others, it simply means around 20 or 30 guests, rather than the more standard 120 to 150 people attending. “I’m loving this trend as the true essence of the couple is really coming through,” Sherri says. “Our couples are enjoying more deeply meaningful weddings and it’s a joy to plan for them.”
“Our couples are enjoying more deeply meaningful weddings and it’s a joy to plan for them.” Personal Weddings Much like the micro-wedding trend, couples are wanting their day to have more reflection. Personalization in weddings is a term that has been used for decades, but now it is truly coming to life, as couples are choosing more individualized ceremonies, decor and themes, as well as the smaller details like favors and stationery. “This generation of couples is really looking to have their day make sense to them and represent who they are as individuals and a new family,” Sherri explains. “They are choosing to create ceremonies that include rituals and stories that belong to them and will live with them forever; they make choices that nod to tradition and also make their own mark.”

Green is the new Floral While couples still love flowers, and they will never go out of style, there is a trend toward using greenery in decor, bouquets, ceremony sites and centerpieces. The new generation is eco-friendly and conscious of where their florals are sourced. “We work with many couples that are having weddings in barns and beautiful big spaces, and using greenery and fairy lights is one of my all-time favorite decor choices,” says Sherri. “You can make it look different every time because we source in-season greenery and match it with our spaces perfectly for a really individualized look with monochrome green tones.” Multi-Day Celebrations Seeking deeper meaning and more impact for their weddings, many couples are choosing multi-day celebrations for guests. “We’re organizing three- and four-day weddings more often now,” says Sherri. “Couples love treating their guests who often times travel a long way to attend a wedding, so they are making it into a long weekend of celebrations rather than just a few hours together.” Sherri tells of couples choosing to have their guests arrive on Thursday, celebrate with a welcome drink and casual dinner. On Friday, there could be a day of golf, tourist activities, and spa treatments before the rehearsal and dinner, then all of the visiting guests join in for a welcome gettogether. Saturday is the big day, and then Sunday can be a brunch for everyone before guests leave to travel home. continued on page 66
REAL WEDDING STORY
A Beautiful Wedding Day Devin and Matt
Joseph Laurin Photography LAKES REGION BRIDE 51
Devin & Matt Date of engagement: December 29, 2018 Date of wedding: August 31, 2019 The wedding had everything a couple could wish for, but it took vision and planning...not to mention, three well-behaved dogs! As Devin began to think about her wedding, she had some ideas for what she wanted. She says, “We wanted somewhere with a gorgeous mountain view, as well as somewhere all our guests would be able to stay the weekend. At Owl’s Nest Resort in Thornton, NH, they have brand new, five-bedroom houses that fit all of our guests. Also, we needed somewhere all our dogs could be in attendance!” With so many beautiful details, Devin wanted her wedding colors to be simple, clean and elegant, and everything in white. She adds, “Since all the flowers and linens were to be white, I knew I’d love the look of greenery to make it earthy yet sophisticated. The vines up the tent posts came out amazing, as did the large hanging greenery piece that was placed right above the dance floor.” continued on page 54

Devin and Matt continued from page 52 When asked what stood out in her mind as a great part of the wedding day, Devin says, “My favorite part of the day was the after-party! Our venue (Owl’s Nest Resort) had beautiful houses that all our guests stayed in, and we threw a party in two of them after the reception. We also got McDonald’s delivery and had hundreds of Big Macs and fries delivered, as well as a pizza delivery from a local spot. We stayed up all night celebrating! “Matt’s favorite part of the day was when we went off with our photographer at sunset and took pictures. Our coordinator, Emma, brought us to different spots on a golf cart. Our photographer, Joe (Joe Laurin Photography) had us laughing so hard during the pictures, and he really is amazing and fun to be around!” Devin adds. Among the unusual and beautiful details of the wedding was the bride’s veil. “My veil was custom made by a woman in Greece. Her name is Tami and her instagram is Atelier Tami. (I found her on Etsy.) I had her make my veil finger-tip length because I didn’t want to cover my beautiful train,” Devin explains. The maid’s gowns offered the women a chance to wear what they felt fit them best, and Devin’s only stipulation was the dresses had to be blush colored. Devin shares her wedding-planning advice, “Always have a plan B and C with outdoor weddings. We put a deposit down on a beautiful clear tent that would have been set up the morning-of if it was raining. We also rented heaters and put them on the perimeter of the tent in case it got cold at night. Also, we bought warm blankets for people to use if they were sitting by the fire pit.” The Wedding Professionals: Photographer: Joseph Laurin Photography (Joseph_Laurin on Instagram) Florals: Fleurish - Allyson Rand Wedding Cake: Henny B Cakes Macarons from Woops Ceremony officiant: Devin’s father Music: Silver Arrow Band Wedding menu: Peppercorn steak fries, spinach and wild mushroom ravioli, Atlantic salmon Wedding Planner: “We didn’t hire a wedding planner because I wanted to be very involved, but our coordinator Emma Bogardus from Owl’s Nest was amazing!” Devin says.

he inspiration for this styled editorial was the lyric poem, “The Lady of Shalott” by Alfred Lord Tennyson. Says Libby, the owner of All the Little Stories Photography, who styled and photographed the shoot, “We wanted to do an editorial that emphasized the lake’s woodland setting, particularly the abundance of ferns, moss, and rock found all across the landscape. Additionally, we were really interested in taking medieval inspiration and bringing it to a modern, somewhat bohemian aesthetic. The story of ‘The Lady of Shalott’ was a perfect blend of these two inspiration sources. We drew from the imagery within the poem itself, as well as from the many paintings inspired by it (particularly those of John William Waterhouse). “To emphasize the medieval elements of the design, we used jewel tones: ruby reds, emerald greens, and navy blues, with gold accents,” Libby says. “The woodsy elements were a key part of the initial inspiration and overall theme. For my own wedding, which took place on Newfound Lake, I really wanted a table that almost looked overgrown with ferns and moss, with beat-up hurricane lanterns in the center. Mine didn’t quite turn out the way I had imagined, so I’ve always wanted to make that vision a reality. We decided to play with that idea here a bit, and after starting there, this idea of really leaning hard into the greenery took off.” continued on page 62

Medieval Modern Wedding continued from page 59 Says Libby, “I think greenery is having a moment in wedding trends, but this kind of woodsy, greenery-centric decor isn’t necessarily overtly popular yet. I think greenery is on the edge of really exploding and being recognized for how gorgeous it is in its own right. There’s so much texture and life in all different kinds of greenery; it is so much more than filler and can really convey so much style. Whether that style is romantic and woodsy or tropical and hip, integrating more greenery is an opportunity to create a real statement.” What about the romantic photography of the couple in the canoe? “Integrating the canoe was inspired by ‘The Lady of Shalott’ in the poem; after seeing Sir Lancelot, she climbs out of her tower and gets into a canoe and pushes herself off down the river toward Camelot. There’s a famous John William Waterhouse painting conveying the moment of her in the canoe in the river that we drew inspiration from, layering quilts and greenery into the canoe to give it that dream-like, painterly quality (even though it was, in fact, a utilitarian Old Town Canoe!).”

Should a couple want to work an unusual location into their wedding photography, Libby offers, “The best way for couples to integrate pretty and unusual locations is by allocating time for it. Whether that means budgeting your timeline on your wedding day to explore as many photography locations as possible (around your venue or even traveling off-property) or scheduling a follow-up, post wedding photo shoot, the key is communicating with your photographer so they can best prepare for the shots they know you want. After doing this shoot, I coincidentally had a couple who told me that canoeing together is a passion so they wanted a photo in their canoe. I knew from doing this shoot that getting canoe shots can be quite involved. It is tricky and time consuming. But knowing that up-front meant I was able to tell them what to expect from that shot, what I would need from them, how long it might take, etc, and we planned accordingly. I’m happy to say we nailed the canoe shot, no one got wet, and everything stayed on schedule. So don’t be afraid to ask your photographer if you have an idea for something that seems wild - with the right communication and preparation, it may not actually be wild or hard to achieve after all!”
Libby’s final advice when it comes to wedding plans and photos is, “When something doesn’t go according to plan, like a sudden unexpected rain storm, embrace it. Whatever that means to you, embrace it. Maybe that means taking photos with an umbrella, maybe that means taking cozy, intimate porch or indoor photos. Maybe that means running into the rain and dancing with your new husband. No matter what, embrace it as part of your day, because the most important thing is you are marrying the love of your life. And by embracing it, you will get photos that feel, not just visually, but emotionally reflective of the day you shared.”

George was flawless and our guests raved about him!” Officiant: The groom’s aunt was the officiant. The bride shares that having her up there with them, really added a special touch to the ceremony. Reception music: Terry Moran from Crown Special Events. Jessica recalls, “We had a huge dancing crowd and Terry kept the most amazing party vibe going out on the dance floor all night. He also projected some fun music videos up on the tent to go along with the songs that was really neat to watch while dancing. We even did a not-so-great Dirty Dancing lift! We had a photo booth with Crown, too, just to keep the fun going. Curtis’ cousin, Josh Groleau, worked with Terry and sang the first dance song, the mother/son dance song, a special surprise ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ for Curtis and his grandmother to dance to, and a very appropriate ‘Castle on the Hill’ by Ed Sheeran to end the night. Josh also happens to be the lead singer in Sweep the Leg Entertainment, an awesome local NH band.” Having him perform these songs meant the world to Jessica and Curtis. We also did latenight snacks, which included mini sliders and flat bread pizzas. Everything was delicious!” Having experienced a wonderful wedding weekend, the couple has some advice to share with others. Giana offers, “Make sure you have a back-up plan just in case! It was drizzling a few hours before the wedding, but we were lucky that it cleared up. I was happy we did have the tent for that ‘just in case’ moment. And, she stresses, “Hire a videographer. I am so happy I hired mine (even though it was a last minute decision) and he did an amazing job capturing the day.” Greg’s favorite part of their wedding day was, “The first look and taking pictures with our families. Our dog, Obi, was so well behaved for our pictures.” “The whole day was so fun!” recalls Giana. “If I had to pick one part, it would probably be our first dance and dancing all night with friends and family.” continued on next page

Wedding music trends for 2020 By DJ Terry Moran If you thought the creativity in wedding music has gone stale, I’m happy to say that faith in an experienced, quality DJ is your secret to a wonderful wedding! Sure, most DJs have the same musical libraries. But a great DJ (and you need a great one!) will ask questions about your musical tastes, see what concerts you enjoy, what’s on your Spotify playlists, and ask who you are inviting to your celebration. Because of the way music is now being listened to, from YouTube, Spotify and other streaming services, we are seeing musical trends getting wider and wider. This is good for music, but tougher for DJs trying to rock a crowd. Why? Read on. The rub is how to figure out a room with 150 people that have 150 DIFFERENT favorite songs and cook it up like a celebrity chef. What songs are dead? What big songs from 2019 are people sick of hearing? What “new” songs (out in the last 6 months) can rock the dance floor? What songs are popular on radio/streaming but don’t translate well to the dance floor? This is what a great wedding DJ predicts every weekend during wedding season. And your DJ’s intuition and predictions have to be better than your local meteorologist! Of course there are solid wedding songs everyone expects to hear, but remember, this is NOT your parent’s wedding reception - it’s your day. All about you, right? But you invited 150 people that will expect a variety of good songs from all decades. Great DJs will work hard to satisfy all of your guests, not just your college buddies, all night. That’s what makes a great celebration. Some guests will be disappointed to hear that no, we will NOT be playing Pitbull tracks all night. Remember, weddings are the hardest events to DJ. Why? Because you can expect 5 or 6 generations of people excited to celebrate with you. Combine this with 10+ genres of music that will get them moving (yes, including some Pitbull songs) and there are a lot of decisions to make behind the decks. Experienced DJs earn their rates by keeping the dance floor full because of veteran music programming skills, controlling the energy, and the length and transitions between songs all night. This is why most playlists don’t work. The DJ uses his/her intuition to create the magic based on who is jamming with them, and it cannot be pre-baked in a list. WHEN a song is played is also crucial to the energy that it derives from your dance floor. “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” (1987) by the late, great Whitney Houston has been the #1 requested song at weddings across the country for the last few years. It’s high energy, transcends many generations and is a big singalong. But I personally don’t play it in the first hour of the dance floor. I keep it in my toolbox to create a spark when I need it, then ride off that energy for the remainder of that set. It’s not just music that is changing; recent wedding trends also dictate musical changes. Brandon Lindsey, ahigh-end wedding DJ from Ohi, gives his take on 2020, “I think it’s important to understand that a 22-year-old bride’s parents are starting to get to the age where tracks from the 80s aren’t always the go-to songs for them. For example, a 47-year-old parent is a child of the 80s but was in college in the early 90s. That means a little less early 80s music and more early 90s songs to please some parents and their friends. I’ve also noticed that many brides and grooms are requesting way less ‘brand new’ music as most of it is slower and not very danceable. A lot of requests and some of the best dance floor fillers consist of music from the 2000s. The younger generation also expects mixing now, not just a DJ playing songs all the way to the end. Shorter attention spans and having grown up hearing mixing even on the radio, they want that type of sound at their party.” Regardless of where music and musical trends are going, a good chat with an experienced wedding DJ will help you navigate a strategy that will work for you, your friends, cousins, aunties, parents and everyone in between. There are enough things for you to stress about on your big day, keeping the dance floor full should not be one of them! (DJ Terry Moran is the owner of Crown Special Events in Lacoia, NH and Chelmsford, Massachusettss. Terry is a former club DJ and has spun over 2,000 events. He has been a national speaker at several DJ conventions in Las Vegas and Atlantic City. Organize Your Wedding - the All-Important Timeline 9-12 Months (or longer) Before the Wedding Choose the date, talking with key players (family and those you want to be in the wedding) to make sure they are available. Tell family and friends about your engagement. Set a budget, taking into consideration what kind of wedding you want and can afford. (Big, intimate, country, modern, outdoor, tented? Color scheme?) Who will pay for what? Your parents, parents-in-law, you and your partner, or a mixture of all? Start a guest list and get guests’ addresses, asking your parents (if they are involved in the planning/contributing financially) for their lists of must-be-invited guests. Begin to shop for vendors: Caterer, reception venue, photographer - the most popular choices are booked over a year in advance, so don’t wait! Browse your potential choices in Lakes Region Bride magazine and online. Make appointments to view venues, talk with caterers and other vendors. As soon as possible, book caterer, venue, photographer, videographer, tent and other vendors and send deposits. Attend bridal shows in the region where your wedding will be held; sample foods/cakes, talk with vendors, get inspiration ideas. Get organized with a dedicated space for all your wedding appointments, receipts, etc. Use a binder, file folders or desk space. Discuss who will officiate your ceremony: family clergy, rabbi, JP or other and book that person. Ask wedding attendants to be in the wedding. Make appointments with bridal shop to try on gowns; decide who will go to the fittings with you. Meet with florists and sign contract with the one that suits your style and needs. Audition bands and DJs and book your choice. Make a list of what you will need for rentals: tables, chairs, tent, lighting if outdoors. Do you want/need a wedding coordinator? This can be helpful if you have a big wedding with big decor plans or if you live far away from the wedding location or have little time to plan a wedding. Talk to your insurance agent about wedding insurance. 9 Months Before the Wedding Purchase your wedding gown to allow time for alterations. Give bridesmaids the color scheme and any style you have in mind for the maids’ gowns. Set up gift registries online and in stores. Shop for your wedding cake; meet with bakers and sample flavors. Book any remaining wedding vendors. 6-8 Months Before the Wedding Who will host rehearsal dinner and where will it be? FInalize wedding dinner with caterer. Meet with invitation specialists, determine typeface, wording, envelopes, and place your order. 78 LAKES REGION BRIDE
Shop for tuxedos, suits or other groom and groomsmen attire. Discuss where you will honeymoon and book flight, hotel, etc. 4-5 Months Before the Wedding Compose a day-of timeline (this will likely change somewhat in the weeks ahead). Check out marriage license requirements. Buy attendants’ gifts. Invite guests to rehearsal dinner. 4-6 Weeks Before the Wedding Book appointments for wedding-day hair/makeup. Print ceremony programs. Get marriage license. Talk with ceremony musicians and make sure they have songs you want played and when music will be played. Confirm guest count and all details with caterer, baker, officiant, reception venue. Purchase and wrap gifts for wedding party, future husband/wife, parents. Write thank-you notes for gifts you have received. Pick up all wedding attire and try everything on to make sure all fits well. Break in your wedding shoes. 2 Weeks Before the Wedding Create seating charts for reception, give to caterer/reception facility coordinator/wedding coordinator. Confirm details with officiant, all deliveries such as flowers, create a list of must-have photos and give to photographer. Go over all payments and keep organized! Send any final payments that are due. Confirm all details, timing with all vendors. Invite and confirm a person to be in charge of guest book and gift table at the reception. Prepare toasts if necessary. Give wedding party personal info. packets with list of phone numbers, emails, the weekend’s schedule, directions, etc. The Day Before the Wedding Pack for the honeymoon. Make sure someone knows your travel plans for honeymoon. Check in with reception venue coordinator for final details. The Wedding Day Write a special message for your partner and ask someone to deliver it with a gift before the wedding. Eat something before the ceremony even if you aren’t hungry! Stay hydrated with water. Enjoy the big day! After the Wedding Day Ask a few members of the wedding party to check in with reception venue and make sure all gifts were picked up after the reception, any coats, etc. left behind. Ask someone to be in charge of getting your wedding gown to the dry cleaners for cleaning and preservation. Preserve some special things from your wedding day: Have your bouquet dried/professionally preserved, have the cake top layer frozen and eat it on your first anniversary.
