SEPTEMBER MEETING REVIEW 09/16 Attendance: 52 members + officers First of all, as the editor, I was very surprised and delighted at how many people showed up for our meeting. I really hope our members will return with their friends for the October meeting. We first introduced our officers and sponsors, and informed the freshman who were at the meeting that the spot for the freshman representative is open. The links which were shared during the meeting are websites where our members can sign up for the club, pay their dues, and download apps needed for volunteering from September to October. One of the volunteering opportunities our club is sponsoring this month is "Adopt A Nursing Home". Our members send letters to staff and residents to the OnPointe Transitional Care at the Memorial Hospital at Arlington, TX. Johnson&Johnson #DonateAPhoto Our club also participated in the Johnson&Johnson photo campaign. By donating photos by taking pictures and uploading them, our club members supported WISER International, Shot@Life, and Operation Smile. WISER International provides WISER girls in Kenya with healthcare for a year, Shot@Life provides children around the world with life saving vaccines, and Operation Smile provides life-changing surgery from children living around the world with cleft lip and cleft plate. Our members can choose one of the three causes every day and donate a photo of their choice. When they donate a photo, Johnson&Johnson donates $1 to that cause. Our members can earn 1 hour if they hold a streak for a week, showing their dedication to serve the community. Download the app and donate with us! Don't forget to add the hashtag #lhskc when you donate so that our club can see your photos! Likewise, if you search for #lhskc you can see all the photos our club has been donating! Our club has donated at least 222 photos!!

Membership Referral For the first time, our members have the option of inviting their friends to become Key Club members for volunteering hours. Not only will this help increase membership during online learning, it will also help the community have more volunteers to help out and encourage more students to be engaged in helping the community. This also helps more students have extra-curricular activities, so they will not feel so stuck at home. Note for Members: If you are participating in this opportunity, please ask your friend to put your name in the google form when they sign up! Get with a group of people to volunteer once or twice a month together because it’ll be more fun to volunteer with friends, and you will keep each other in check. Secondly, planning ahead of time to clear certain days in your schedule throughout the summer is helpful for me. I don’t know about you, but my summers are certainly busy. My family loves to travel and go on a lot of vacations, so it’s easy to forget and overlook volunteering. But, by clearing specific days for volunteering, there’s no excuse or reason to brush it off.

A famous quote by Rick Warren said, “The greatest gift you can give is your time because when you are giving someone your time, you are giving them a portion of your life that you will never get back.” So just by volunteering a couple times every month, it will be better than not volunteering at all. GROWING KEY CLUB WITH

SOCIAL MEDIA

Photo Caption: the officers getting together to create videos to post on Instagram in order to spread news about the club.

As a society, we are more enabled to connect with each other than ever before! Unlike just a few decades ago, we can interact with people across the globe in a matter of seconds.

Social Media to Grow Key Club | 15

"Our club sees the opportunity that social media provides to keep our members informed and passionate about serving." Although the use of social media is generally faced with harsh criticism by a few, our Club sees the opportunity that social media provides to keep our members informed and passionate about serving -especially this year- and the connections that can be made with other Key Clubs like ours across the nation.Upon receiving my position as Lamar High School Key Club’s webmaster, I prioritized making sure that our social media is utilized to share what our Club stands for while keeping our current members informed and connected. Often, when asking people to join Key Club, I am met with the question “What does Key Club even do?” which shows that small clubs such as ours absolutely must promote themselves as much as possible. By using our social media platform and the cooperation of this year’s officers, we have been able to do precisely that! This year, we have recruited an astounding number of members (especially considering our virtual limitations), primarily because more people heard about our Club through informative posts and shared stories. Furthermore, our Instagram account is an easily accessible source for our current members to find out what service opportunities are coming up! Since most of our Club’s members have an account already, they don’t have to go too

far out of their way to search for information, promoting the amount of activity our Club receives. Social media promotes recruitment and activity within our own Club; it also allows us to see how other clubs are functioning. For example, by engaging with other high school key clubs in our area: including Martin, Bowie, and Arlington, our own Club can find inspiration and formulate ideas for possible service that our own Club can use. Through maintaining our Key Club’s account, seeing the activity of other clubs and organizations, and reaching out virtually to other Key Club leaders, social media has opened my eyes to just how immense the impact of Key Club. Furthermore, it has transformed individual clubs into an articulate team with shared values. Social media has become a valuable resource as our Club seeks to grow among our school and connect with other clubs throughout our region. As Helen Keller once stated, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” I believe that the use of media platforms has broken down the barriers that have prohibited us for so long and has established a bridge of interconnection in its place. CHANGES WE ARE PLANNING TO MAKE

2020 - 2021

BY EMILY WILSON For some, this year may look like an opportunity wasted, full of disappointments instead of the planned initiatives. Still, I think we have to view this as a fantastic challenge and a great chance to promote a feeling of family, whether in or out of quarantine. This year is my third year in Key Club and my second year as part of the Key Club officer team. Key Club is an initiative I’ve been so excited to be a part of and create an impact on. Although presenting some difficulties, this year is a unique opportunity for interclub growth while also facilitating new connections with Clubs locally. Some changes I’m looking forward to are taking new initiatives with our great officer team to foster a new level of relationship we haven’t reached before.

This year, I’m very excited to look at collaboration efforts with other Key Clubs and implement new ideas we’ve seen our local clubs use. This year our Key Club has gotten so much more involved with our interdistrict communications, allowing us to talk with many new officers. I’ve gotten to have the fun of joining our district Discord and connecting with the officer team at Summit Preparatory. Besides being a fun group of people, they’re a club in our district and gave me all kinds of ideas for virtual volunteering opportunities. After discussing their ideas with our Key Club, we all agreed to include a few into our initiatives. It was an excellent opportunity to learn. Changes We Are Implementing - Emily Wilson | 17

Some of their ideas were things that our club hadn’t even considered, and this makes me excited to foster more collaborative efforts. This year I’m also hoping to implement stronger connections within our Key Club general members. This quarantine with COVID-19 has been straining for many peoples’ mental health due to lack of connection, but I think Key Club could be a fantastic outlet for people to find a sense of belonging. We’re really trying to increase our social media outreach, so all our members stay in the loop. This is also used to promote the great work other members may be involved in. Beyond that, though, we’ve considered some ideas to develop connections through having members meet in person. We’ve discussed having socially distanced groups of members pick up trash locally, and through that, everyone could make some new people. I’ve also been interested in the idea used by other Key Clubs, which is creating a group chat or Discord. This could be another great thing to strengthen a feeling of unity. Key Club this year is so different than anyone would’ve expected. Yet along with all the difficulties, I think we have to recognize some of our newfound opportunities to facilitate a new sense of connection - A sense of connection that perseveres through all of Key Club, not just ours, and hopefully one that brings members the true feeling of the Key Club family.

THINGS WE'RE DOING DIFFERENTLY 1. COLLABORATION WITH OTHER KEY CLUBS Last year, we collaborated with Arlington High School Key Club for a volunteering event at Mission Arlington. This fall, we've connected with Summit Preparatory, another Key Club in our School District. We are planning to share and communicate more with the Key Clubs around us 2. CONNECTING WITH THE TEXAS OKLAHOMA DISTRICT KEY CLUB This year is the second year our key club is doing our formal Key Club duties. Our officers had the chance to join the District discord, which is giving us the chance to understand how other Key Clubs are doing things and improve our own Club 2. CONNECTION WITH OUR MEMBERS Due to COVID-19, we are not able to interact with many of our members face-to-face. Therefore, we are considering creating a group chat so that members can discuss with each other and become friends. In the past years, our club has been so big that even our officers had trouble recognizing everyone and making everyone feel welcome. It is our dream that Key Club will one day feel like a family. KEY CLUB VS. SCHOOL - By Razan Shakoor As we all know, this year has been a tumultuous year. The days before spring break ended up to be some of our last days on campus for the year, our months blended into one Tik-Tok filled haze, and our responsibilities grew. We transitioned to an online school system, which most thought would be easy, but it was not. We had to become our own teachers and even taught some educators how to use online services. Throughout this year, we have faced a lot, yet when the new school year started, it seemed to be a lot to handle for many people, myself included. Personally, I believe the first semester will always be the hardest of the year since we have to readjust ourselves to learn new material quickly. Over the summer break, I lose my drive to do work, and this year was no different, except I felt I had become even lazier.

This may be because I have "Senioritis", the laziness spell all seniors face, or it might be because of COVID, I have mostly stayed home. PAGE FOUR| JOURNEY

"Either way, the first couple of weeks of the 2020-2021 school year was not the best of times for me." Either way, the first couple of weeks of the 2020-2021 school year was not the best of times for me. I struggled a lot with time management with my school and essential club duties. I would put work off until the morning it was due, such as my calculus homework. I got into the bad habit of doing my work for my calculus class during my government class because I did not want to do the lengthy word problems sometimes. I would also forget about crucial key club duties I had committed to and then rush to complete them. Overall, I struggled a lot with my tasks when school started. Luckily during the third or fourth week of the first semester, I began to put myself together and learned how to properly manage my time after one of my teachers reached out and sent us a helpful video on prioritizing. I began evaluating what tasks will be the most strenuous and put them as my top priority on sticky notes and others following. I started optimizing my time before my classes on adays and did both my calculus and academic decathlon homework so I wouldn’t have to spend the rest of the day doing work. I began to ask my teachers for help when I needed instead of being too scared to ask. Even though these were small steps I could’ve done at any time before online learning, I have become a better student and officer due to these steps and hope to continue on as long as I stick to my sticky notes and prioritizing specific tasks.
