Something important to me is making sure I have time for rest. Since sophomore year I have had a really unhealthy sleep schedule. I have been recently trying to fix my routine so I'll be able to get a full night's rest. It's important to let your body rest each day so you don't stretch it too thin and so you'll have ample energy for the next day ahead!

SARA LIM Hi, I’m Sara, this year's editor! This is my third year in key club and my second year being a part of the officer team. Key club has been such a fun experience for me because I have gotten to meet new friends and learn new skills. Hope to see y’all at our service events! One six weeks down, five more to go!

Attendance: 45 members + officers First of all, as the editor, I was very surprised and delighted at how many people showed up for our meeting. I really hope our members will return with their friends for the October meeting. We first introduced our officers and sponsors, and informed the clubbers of the stole requirements. We reminded them that they should be logging their hours online as well as on an hour sheet. Our club is sponsoring -meaning these service hours are not opportunities members found on their own -the World Food Program's Free Rice, member referrals, Charity Miles, Dosomething.org, Zooniverse, and writing the monthly HOTO. We informed them of how they can connect with us through Instagram, our website, and Remind. Lastly, we informed them that dues are due on October 31st. It is crucial that they do so to be Key Club members.

We are going to announce at this October meeting that we have opened up positions on the officer board for class representatives.

WHAT WE HAVE PLANNED FOR

FUNDRAISING BY: ZAC HATTENDORF

Photo Caption: Key Club members going to support Lamar Key Club fundraiser at Chipotle.

Fundraising | 15

The Lamar high school Key Club has grown to be a bustling organization encompassing upwards of eighty members. However, to run a club this size takes a considerable amount of income. This is where the magic of fundraising swoops in to save the day. Our main source of income for the Lamar High School Key Club is our member dues which cover the cost owed to the Kiwanis Foundation and the production of our club’s T-shirts. So when we want, or more likely need, funds to accomplish one of our goals, partnering with companies such as Chipotle is a tremendous help. Wow, what a great segway into talking about chipotle! Not only is Chipotle’s food tasty, but fundraising with them is super easy. The application process is fast and simple since the organizer only has to enter their information and reason for fundraising. The supporters also get a great deal since they get a tasty meal and our club gets thirty-three percent of the profits from anyone who tells the cashier that they are there to support the Lamar High School Key Club. While we do not currently have a set date for when this fundraiser with Chipotle will occur, we are planning on having one this year when we need the money to do something. We haven’t had to plan too far in advance due to how easy it is to set up for all parties involved in the fundraiser.

Another potential company that we have considered partnering with is Raising Canes. They offer a similar format to Chipotle in that our supporters order food and a percent of the profits go directly to our club. The setup process for a fundraiser with Raising Canes is almost identical to that of Chipotle. While a fundraiser with Raising Canes is easy to set up and would be profitable for the Lamar High School Key Club, we would only receive fifteen percent of the total sales compared to Chipotle’s thirtythree percent of sales. For this reason, a partnership with Chipotle has been vastly more discussed than one with Raising Canes. If you have been paying attention you will have noticed that both of the fundraisers mentioned above have been related to food. This is actually an intentional effort on our part. The main reason being that all parties earn something out of a partnership like the ones aforementioned. For example, the members of our organization get a fresh, tasty meal and the satisfaction of supporting something they care about, we generate funds to run and grow our club which in turn can help more people, and our local businesses are supported in the process. It is a win win win! Our Club is growing every day and this expansion allows us to help more and more people. The fundraisers that we hold help us achieve the things that we do which is why they are necessary for our cause. Plus, all parties get something out of them compared to us just asking for donations. CHANGES WE ARE PLANNING TO MAKE

2021 - 2022

This year has brought about a number of changes from the previous years. Last year, key club was mostly online, so most opportunities and socials were also online. As an effect, most people never got to meet each other in person. Thankfully, we have gone back to in person with specific measures, so we are trying our best to put our club back on track. This year I have seen plenty of new opportunities in many areas. We have kept open our online service opportunities to have a backup. Keeping this also allows our club to interact in other communities, such as Zooniverse where members can help with projects around the world. By keeping these online opportunities, this club has changed from previous years where there weren’t as many online opportunities. I enjoy working on projects that touch on many interesting topics, such as wildlife and design. Secondly, we are trying our best to interact with people in different cliques at school, like in other grade levels or people involved in other extracurriculars. By getting people from other groups, key club can become larger and even more diverse. People will be excited to meet new people, and some may even become friends.

Changes We Are Implementing - Ada Lian | 17

Thirdly, we are including. Personally, I have reached out to my friends and asked them to reach out to people they know in order to recruit as many people as I can. After recruiting, I can meet them in key club and build new relationships with people I may have never met if not for key club. Fourthly, I plan to be more involved in my club. I will try my best to remember member’s names and also try to talk with them more whenever I see them. I will also plan to do things in an orderly fashion, so I can have time to go to socials and be involved in service opportunities more. This way I can personally become more involved in the club. Lastly, I plan to help out by bringing more ideas on the table. I will ask others for opportunities at their church or other extracurriculars, so I can share those opportunities with key club. I will also try to come up with new ideas for socials that will work with as many people as I can. I will take into consideration the time and place preferred by others. By bringing new ideas to the table, key club will become more known in the community while also allowing current members to have fun. These are the changes I plan to implement into key club.

1. KEEPING ONLINE OPPORTUNITIES By keeping these online opportunities, this club has changed from previous years where there weren’t as many online opportunities. 2. INTERACTING WITH DIFFERENT GROUPS OF PEOPLE IN OUR CLUB we are trying our best to interact with people in different cliques at school, like in other grade levels or people involved in other extracurriculars. By getting people from other groups, key club can become larger and even more diverse. 3. BEING INCLUSIVE Reaching out to friends and asking them to reach out to people they know in order to recruit as many people as possible. After recruiting, we can meet them in key club and build new relationships with people we may have never met if not for key club. 4. BRINGING MORE IDEAS TO THE TABLE By bringing new ideas to the table, key club will become more known in the community while also allowing current members to have fun.

SOCIAL MEDIA TO PROMOTE COMMUNICATION - By Layla Shalabi Key club is a club where we can give back to the community and help others. At Lamar High School we have over 80 members and new members who are still registering. This club is one of the biggest and well-known clubs in our school. The communication use of social media has significantly promoted Key Club. A few apps we use to spread the word for Key Club are through Instagram, Remind, and our website. Our Instagram account is an easy way to access most of our information and showcase the beauty of helping others through pictures. Our bio is where our main source of information is. It includes a location for new members trying to follow our Instagram. It allows them to choose the correct club to follow because Instagram has many nationwide Key Cubs accounts. Our bio also includes the link to our website and the next meeting date so members can be informed. Lamar Key Club Instagram also informs members about the social events and upcoming meetings. It also showcases pictures of members volunteering. Another main source of communication is Remind. Remind is a communication app, where all members sign up for it while registering for Key Club. This app allows officers to post important announcements such as when and where to sign up for the next volunteer opportunity, we post monthly meeting’s date, due dates, and links to forms or websites.

Social Media to Promote Communication - Layla Shalabi | 19

Remind also allows members to text officers privately if they have a question. Remind is a really important tool for communication to our members and officers. The last social media that our club uses to communicate is the Lamar Key Club website. This has all the information about the club. It's organized in tabs for a member to easily locate the number of hours a member needs to earn and how to log those hours, it allows members to track their hours, and information about a volunteering event and how to obtain hours. The website also shows how many hours a member needs to obtain before the year and or how many hours needed to earn a stole. Lastly, the website provides flexibility for members who cannot make it to meetings. These members can view the meeting presentation on our website. Members who are curious about learning more about officers and key clubs can check out the newsletter and tab for officers. Our club is well promoted at Lamar High School in acknowledgement to all the officers who put their effort into making our social media accounts useful to key club members. Our social media allows us to communicate important information, announcements and spread the overall messages about Key Club.

WHY WE USE SOCIAL MEDIA TO PROMOTE COMMUNICATION?

Humans of Texas Oklahoma - Jayden Schoenthal | 21

"I WAS DELIGHTED TO FIND OUT THAT BOTH UNIONS OFFER A VARIETY OF SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES, WHICH ALLOWS ME TO EXPAND MY HORIZONS ON THE POSSIBILITIES OF ASSISTANCE." Hello! My name is Jayden Schoenthal. I am

As the elected vice president of the

a senior at Lamar High School in Arlington, Texas, and this is my first year in Key Club. I am an active sports enthusiast, movie lover, and violin player. I have been a part of the Lamar High School symphony orchestra for

National Honor Society, I anticipated that both NHS and Key Club would almost be exactly the same. I was shocked to find out I was about half right. While both organizations revolve around assisting in

the past three years now, and this is my eight year playing the violin. Growing up, I have always valued three core ideals:

making the local community better than it originally was, Key Club is the type of accepting club that allows anyone to join,

leadership, integrity, and honesty. Those three ideals have shaped me into the teen I am today, and the man I strive to become in the future. They have also pushed me to try and be a part of something bigger than myself, such as Key Club or National Honor Society.

unlike National Honor Society which involves a heavily selective recruitment process, including multiple short answer questions on why you personally feel you should be inducted. I was delighted to find out that both unions offer a variety of service opportunities, which allows me to expand my horizons on the possibilities of assistance.

As someone who values giving back to my community, I jumped at the opportunity to be involved in the major service organizations present on my school’s campus. With most of my orchestra friends already current members of Key Club, many of whom have asked me to join on many occasions, I decided to take their advice. Since Key Club is highly talked about throughout the school, and therefore very full of members, it was a little nerve wracking being a first timer. However, I was thoroughly surprised at how smoothly and effectively the transition was. Much of that came from my officer friends Ada Lian, Sara Lim, Haley Wehr, Samir Zaman, and Emily Wilson, who all made sure all new members like me were welcome with open arms.

I look forward to the many adventures and opportunities this year in Key Club. I am especially grateful for the friends and supporters who have tried to convince me to join over the years; Your persistence has finally paid off, and I thank you for it.
