EDITOR'S NOTE hEY GUYS! TIME IS PASSING SO FAST IT'S ALREADY MARCH. THERE ARE LITERALLY ONLY 12 WEES LEFT OF THE SEMESTER. AS A SENIOR i MUST SAY THAT I CNA'T BELIEVE I'M ALMOST GRADUATING. HIGH SCHOOL IS A BLESSING AND I HOPE ALL OF YOU WILL CHERISH IT. THIS YEAR WE ARE WITHOUT PROM OR MUCH OF ANYTHING HONESTLY, BUT I SUPPOSE HAVING THIS YEAR AT HOME TO SPEND TIME WITH OUR FAMILIES BEFORE WE LEAVE IS PRECIOUS AS WELL. I WENT INTO LAMAR TO VOLUNTEER A FEW DAYS AGO AND I REALLY MISS IT. I MISS EATING LUNCH WITH MY FRIENDS, GOING TO CLASS, AND JUST BEING IN THE ENVIRONMENT IN GENERAL. WALKING IN THE HALLS I FELT THE EMPTINESS. I ALSO CAN'T IMAGINE WHAT IT MUST BE LIKE FOR FRESHMEN WHO HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED IT. EVEN THOUGH WE ARE MISSING MANY THINGS, WE ARE ALSO DOING MANY THINGS. I HOPE YOU FIND THIS NEWSLETTER INTERESTING AND SEE THE SERVICE EVENTS THAT WE HAVE DONE. IN THIS TIME OF TROUBLES, VOLUNTEERING WILL HELP US CONNECT OUR SOCIALLY DISTANCED COMMUNITY.

HERE'S

A

RECAP

The rice we've donated through FreeRice has grown by 1000 grains! That's the equivalent of 4 hours of service. Although our number one and number two rice donating champions' grains of rice has not increased, our overall rank increased by 4! Keep going guys, the world needs us! Our February social was moved from 2/20 to 2/24 after the general meeting was also moved to 2/24 because of the power outages. We agreed to move the meeting so that everyone who wants to come would get a chance. Our social theme for February was a mafia social. It was very interesting and our President, Patrick Chang, was killed first the first time we played and then killed again first the third time we played. It was also very fun listening to the accused trying to prove themselves not guilty. We are very grateful to the people that came to enjoy the social and we hope that in the future more and more people will come join us! Lifting Up Lamar was also sadly moved to 3/27 because of the weather and issues with our allocation of funds. Lifting up Lamar is possible through the Youth Opportunities Fund Grant that we plan to use to gather goods such as toothbrushes and other hygiene products and donate them to the school to help our peers through this troubling time. Scan the QR Code to reach the list that we are providing to members as a guide to collecting items. Help us lift up Lamar and increase school spirit! 4 | February Recap

JOURNEY @AN END My first position held was a freshman representative, where I was often out of line. I was often outspoken, and never hesitate to give my opinion on any matter at officer meetings. Subsequently, my method of getting things done was often disregarded. This only made me want to work harder to get things done to where I was satisfied with my work. After the rough sophomore year, I made a promise to myself, that I would never settle for mediocrity, and I would work harder than anybody to make sure we achieved the goals that we set at the beginning of the year. That year, the team and I were so close to achieving our internal goals of going to LEDCON

and reaching the top 25 clubs in the quarterly rankings. We were doing lots of things right, but we couldn’t control factors like COVID-19 and other things. As a senior, I viewed my last year of free public education sort of as a last chance to achieve the goals that I wanted to achieve. As president, I made it my goal to be a club in the top 25 of the Texas Oklahoma region, and to bring our club to our first LEDCON ever. While we didn’t get the chance to go in person, I still found it as an achievement to be proud of, considering that this was the first time we could go as a team. 9 | Journey at An End

"I SAY ALL OF THIS BECAUSE I KNOW THAT TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN ANYTHING, YOU NEED TO PUT IN LOTS OF WORK. IT’LL NEVER BE EASY, BUT IN THE END, IT’LL BE WORTH IT."

These achievements are a lot bigger than me, and none of it would have been possible without my team that I've been very fortunate and blessed to have. My next steps in my volunteering journey will be to make more connections as I continue through the Key Club family and join organizations like Circle K at whichever university I go to in the fall. These last four years have been amazing, and I’ll always be blessed to have the opportunity to serve alongside the Lamar High School Key Club. 10 | Journey at An End

THE NEXT STEP BRETT GREEN Some major things on our agenda are LEDCON and the lifting up Lamar project, which we’re hoping to get squared away next month. Unfortunately, last year we were unable to participate in LEDCON due to the epidemic so we are really looking forward to that this year. We are still under most of the same conditions as last spring, however LEDCON is still a go and we are ready to join the DCON community. In LEDCON we are looking for a chance to learn more about positions, work as a team, possibly show off some talents, expand our Key Club knowledge, and more.

HISTORY OF SPREADING LOVE By Jade Ha No doubt about it, February is the month of love. However, I’m sure most of us acknowledge that it goes far beyond the chocolate-covered strawberries, stuffed bears holding heart-shaped declarations of love, and Valentine’s day gifts for your significant others. This love-infested month is simply about celebrating all the love you hold for your family, friends, and passions In fact, Februaries in years past, are an especially fun and busy time for Key Club in which we get to partake in our love for service while our community celebrates the occasion. The season is school dances galore for the local elementary schools. There are always the sweet Daddy-Daughter dances and, of course, the traditional Valentine’s day dances in need of volunteers. Although the service opportunities we’re presented with tend to vary from year to year, the Wimbish Elementary Daddy Daughter Dance and the Speer Elementary Valentine’s Day Dance are the two our Key Club most consistently lends a hand to. An absolutely crucial and incredibly fun aspect of the dances we get to help out with are making decorations and adorning the gym with said decorations until it transforms from the dreary place where kids are sentenced to pushups and crunches to the spot of one of the most fun school nights of the year. On top of decorating, Members typically work in the concession stand, doing everything from pouring nacho cheese to grilling hot dogs for the hordes of the adorably enthusiastic children, all pumped up from the sugary drinks and the adrenaline of dancing to “Old Town Road.” Having personally volunteered at quite a few of these dances myself, I can attest to the fact that they are a blast and 17 | History of Volunteering

undoubtedly some of the most fun events of the month. The joy of the children is infectious, and I’m reminded of just how much I love the ability to help put a smile on their faces just by lending some of my time and effort. Another event Key Club traditionally participates in during February is the Annual Pancake Fundraiser hosted by our local Kiwanis Club. The event is one of the biggest of the year and one in which we typically have the most volunteers. There’s definitely a reason it’s one of the most popular events of the year because it is simply so much fun! It’s one of the only times of the year that Key Clubs all over the district come together in service. Not only is it great fun to flip pancakes and serve coffee or orange juice with all your friends, but it’s also an awesome way to meet new friends from other Key Clubs and share one another’s love for service. The atmosphere is always so light and energetic as families gather to enjoy pancakes on a bright Saturday morning, as the spring weather begins to usher in. The joy of the hustle and bustle is also infectious, easily making it one of the best events not just in February, but out of the entire year.

Indeed, February is traditionally a servicefilled month, in which we especially take the time to acknowledge our love for not just family and friends, but also our passion for service as the whole community rejoices in celebrations ranging from school dances to pancake days. Unfortunately, like so many other things recently, this past February has been unprecedented. Last February was the final month of any normalcy before the pandemic hit us at full force, so this year marks the first year we were not able to participate in any of our traditional service opportunities for the month - no school dances nor any pancake days. The whole month of February proved to be quite horrid with the winter storm shutting down most of the Texas-Oklahoma region for almost two weeks, ironically forcing a shut-in about a year after the first shut-in caused by COVID. Despite a disappointing past month, our love for service is not restricted to this particularly love-infested month, and we will push forward with our efforts to serve the community with many new and exciting service opportunities as we head into spring.

NEW OPPORTUNITIES BY DAZ MCGINNIS

As this year comes to an erupt end, many of us seniors look to the future in eagerness at what may be in store for us; not only in academia, finance, workforce, or personal growth, but also in how we’ll continue to give back to our surrounding communities. With that said, amongst the last few months of this school year I, so gladly, have the privilege to turn eighteen years old. Now, what exactly must that mean community-wise, you may ask? Well, upon turning eighteen, there are so many more volunteer opportunities open to you as a new adult. Here's just a few to show that not everything is inherently scary at such an intimidating age.

One volunteer position that you can qualify for is a tale as old as time: the Big Brother and Big Sister of America program. In fact, Tarrant county has their very own division located downtown, literally right next to the library and art museum. In this program you are set up with a “Little”, who is a younger person of Tarrant County, and is committed to at least a year of mentoring them through whatever stage of life they may be in. This doesn’t have to cost any money at all. Both of you set out time to plan when to get together, it can be on errand runs, ice cream runs and even just runs if that’s what y’all like to do together. Every match is very carefully planned to make sure the relationship will work out for the long run. What is abundantly amazing about this new relationship is the symbiotic impact both of you might make on each other's world.

21 | New Opporunities

The second volunteer opportunity that would now be available to you is a position at the Salvation Army YET center. YET, standing for Youth Education Town, allows kids a space to be themselves and become more educated while spending time with other kids their age. By volunteering, you’re entrusted with the responsibility of making sure all are safe and growing in a controlled and educational environment. There are many programs they offer, but from personal experience, I really liked my supervised experience with the summer child care programs. There I got to visit with children during music class, arts and crafts, dance, and snack time.

The very last suggestion I have for an opportunity to show your love for your community as a new adult is volunteering for Meals on Wheels. The previous suggestions were geared more towards childcare, but Meals on Wheels stands out due to its heavy involvement of ederly care. With this organization, an individual has the responsibility of delivering a meal once a week to a homebound elder. This can strengthen your bond with your city’s elderly community and possibly give you more opportunities to take as much advice as they can give! Of course, all while providing them a hot meal to eat as they tell their grand tales!

While these are only a limited amount of suggestions, there are a myriad of doors open for you in this particular time in your life, don’t let your possibilities end here. Volunteering comes in many shapes and sizes, all while delivering amazing perspectives of the world. At such a milestone, life doesn't have to be completely full of unknowns, when something as rewarding as volunteering exists. With volunteering, we can take more control of what we want to do in life and who we desire to be!
