THE EDITOR Hey Guys! Happy 1 month after New Years! In this issue, you can see our January Recap, February outlook, and some fun stories and inspiring articles written by our officers. As the editor, making these Newsletters every month has helped me see how far we have come. THE PRESIDENT
I hope the start of your year has been cheery and warm in these chilly months. We haven't had many outdoor volunteer opportunities with temperatures dropping, but members have had lots of fun at our crafting events with the downtown library or our recent social. In February, everyone can look forward to continuing the current process of volunteering and logging hours. We'll also have a new service opportunity with the Kiwanis. Our general membership can expect to celebrate and participate in a pancake breakfast, an event we haven't had in years. Since it's not always easy to find time in a busy schedule, I want to thank our members for volunteering for nearly half a year now. This month, I advise all our members to get their signatures, log their hours, and stay frosty! 2 Letter from the President

Starting the New Year NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS FROM THE TREASURER
by Zac Hattendorf
In this article: YOF GRANT SOCIAL EVENTS
11 Starting the New Year
New year's resolutions are not only important, but a fun tradition that everyone can relate to. They help people and organizations set healthy goals to better themselves and the lives of those around them. And this year will be so much better for the club than the last few. To make this year superior, our main new years goals are to host more social events and to secure the Youth Opportunities Fund grant. Completing these goals will grow our organization and ultimately do good for our community. Community events are one one of the most fun patriots about our club. Sadly, Covid-19 has really put a damper on the amount and scale of social gatherings that are allowed to host.
Social Events
YOF Grant
Thankfully the release of the vaccine and our populations' progress to herd immunity mean that the restrictions are loosening and we are able to hold events again. As of this point, we have held one social event and are planning to hold more. The turnout to our social event was not a very big one since it was the first we've held in quite some time. While this was somewhat disappointing, the return and a greater frequency of events will help boost the turnout and better the morale of our club and eventually our community.
Our second resolution was to try for the YOF grant this year. This grant will fund a project of our creation that helps our community and educates our members on issues with the world around them. This grant helps those who participate just as much as it helps those receiving the service work, which is why it is important to our club. As of now we have brainstormed ideas of what we can apply for and are deciding which one to go with. Once we submit our proposal, and hopefully get accepted, we can continue to better our community through education of our members. Even if we don’t get accepted, we still tried our best which is what matters.
And as a consolation, another club will have gotten the funding to help put another drop of good into the world anyways. This year the Lamar High School Key Club has some big goals and plenty of people who want to see them through. Dedication and effort combined make the key to success, and since we have both, we cannot fail. We will not only reach our new years goals, but we will surpass them and create new ones. Our determination to help those around us make the world a better place for everyone. And the joy we are able to provide to our community makes what we do worth it in every aspect.
12 Starting the New Year
MY MOST MEMORABLE SERVICE MOMENT OF 2021 BY SARA LIM My most memorable moment of service in 2021 was actually my last service event in 2021. Besides Key Club, I am also in the National Honors Society, or NHS for short. We have to meet a certain number of hours for the NHS just like Key Club as well. So I signed up to volunteer at our city’s local mission complex called Mission Arlington. Since it was Christmas time they had something called the Christmas Store running.
13 Most Memorable Service
Their mission is to help the community, and especially during Christmas time. They convert one of their buildings into a Christmas store where people can show up to pick out gifts for their children, or children can go to pick out gifts for their parents/siblings. The store is very well stocked and looks just like a toy store. It was very well decorated and festive and they did a good job of not making them feel awkward. When I went to volunteer, I was asked if I wanted to stock shelves (when they were looking bare), help people shop for gifts, or wrap presents. I am very crafty and decided that I wanted to wrap gifts! When I was brought to the wrapping station I was yet again blown away. The amount of effort and organization put into the set up was amazing. It was like a checkout center but instead of them having to pay for their gifts, we got to wrap them for free. There were over 200 rolls of wrapping paper, and there were ribbons and bows well stocked up too. I have always loved wrapping gifts whether it was for Christmas or birthday parties. Getting to wrap presents for those who actually need them is even better.
The joy in their eyes and smiles across their faces was amazing. This is what makes volunteering so much more worth it and fun. I went to volunteer that day because I needed service hours. But my perspective completely changed after I went there and experienced it. I loved it so much that I went back three consecutive days in a row after that- up until Christmas Eve itself. This event made me love volunteering even more and that is why it’s my most memorable moment of service last year.

WHY KEY CLUB
BY SAMIR ZAMAN Throughout my highschool journey, I have always heard of other clubs doing certain events around campus. Coupled with all my friends and fellow classmates flocking to these events and to later sign up for these said clubs and organizations, it piqued my interest a little bit. But not enough to get me to take the bullet and sign up for any of them either. They were either too time consuming, strict on rules or regulations, required redundant prerequisites to even be considered for the organization. Some of these clubs just flat out didn't appeal to me whatsoever. The ROTC was not up my alley, as it required military training. NHS was daunting because of how pretentious some of the members seemed and the strict rules and standards set for just a high school club baffled me greatly.
15 Why Key Club
Because of all of these factors, I held off from joining clubs for my first two years of high school. Instead, I focussed solely on academics at school and building relationships with peers and teachers. After all, this alternative was not a lesser option compared to focussing on clubs that didn't spark anything inside me. After the pandemic hit in 2020 during my sophomore year, I became quite bored in my home and academics became too simple due to how fast I was able to finish my homework during school hours and have unlimited free time after the fact. This prompted me to get a job, at which point I strived to do more due to my gogetter nature. My older brother, who graduated from Lamar in 2009, told me key club was a good organization to look into due to it teaching you things about community service and it promoting positive behavior and activity. And so, during my junior year, I signed up for key club as a normal member and I did not regret a single thing when I signed on. This organization actually made me resonate with others, achieve things outside of my personal life, thus doing bigger and better things that were more than myself. It fulfilled me more than anything else present in my life and it continues to do so today as an honored VP of the club that brings me joy in every service act, planning event, or social gathering that we have. Furthermore, the new friendships and connections I established along my 2 years of participating in the club have given me a ten fold return and I couldn’t be more grateful for where I am today. This club is a part of me and it resonates with me much more than the other clubs offered at my school.

MY MOI TUNGNUNG As 2021 ends and the year 2022 comes along, new opportunities and experiences are expected. Many people make new year’s resolutions or goals that they wish to fulfill through the year. This is the same for our Key Club. With the new year starting, we have many new ideas and plans we would like to execute this year. Starting this year, our club has already established that socials would be conducted each month. This was planned in order to build connection within all the members in the club. Every month, the class representative and a few other officers are responsible for the planning of the event. They brainstorm and come up with ideas that are executed by the club and the sponsor.
19 Plans for the New Year
Examples of previous socials are making bookmarks for the Arlington Public Library, and having a park day where members bring their favorite sports equipment and hang out with each other. Socials are a crucial element in what makes a club connected and united. Additionally, it adds entertainment and fun for the members of Key Club. It allows for the club to not only be an organization that provides service to the community, but also to the school and the students as it gives them a safe place to enjoy themselves and build relationships. Another endeavor that Key Club plans to start this new year is pursuing a planned, big scale service event. We plan to do this through the use of the YOF grant. All the officers were asked to pitch in ideas that the clb as a whole could work on. Among the ideas included helping out at the animal shelter, making care packs for the homeless and hosting a bake sale or a similar event to raise money to donate to charity. Not only will the planning of this event help grow the connections of Key Club officers, it will also give us an opportunity to branch out on our ideas and take action to serve the community. Furthermore, we get to share these ideas and passions with the members of the club, further encouraging them to participate and even come up with their own ideas of what community service means to them. I believe that this new year will bring us a lot of opportunities as officers and members of Key Club. As a club, we have already begun to put action into our words and plan to do so in the future as well. My hope is that this year will be an improvement and advancement from last year. Through all our planned activities, such as the socials and the YOF grant endeavor, we will grow as a club and as individuals in 2022.
