Service does not have to be big and grandiose to be meaningful and make a diffefrence CHERYL A. ESPLIN

kc.lamar.president@gmail.com Class of 2021 Future Plans: College, then a job at an aerospace engineering company As one of the largest and oldest organizations in the world, I'm incredibly blessed to be a part of the culture and continue the trends of volunteering. Looking into the past, I'm reminded of how volunteering never stopped, especially in tough conditions like today. When the world needed help combating tragedies and epidemics, Key Club was there to help. The members of the club could have been scared of life-threatening diseases such as polio or HIV, but these brave volunteers put their trust in the future volunteers to never give up the spirit and work together to combat these diseases. Similarly, while we are in a pandemic right now, it's important to never give up volunteering. We take precautions such as masks and healthy habits to prevent COVID-19, but even I can't guarantee the safety of our members. But volunteering doesn't stop, and that's the reason why I continue to volunteer even though we are in the midst of a pandemic. People will always in need, and we owe it to our future volunteers to continue the volunteering spirit even in the presence of a pandemic.

kc.lamar.vicepresident@gmail.com Future Plans: get elected as president of key club This year has certainly been one full of unexpected challenges, however what I’ve loved throughout this time is seeing our Key Club adapt and grow in response to the struggles. Rather than sit complacently our Key Club has remained steadfast in still creating opportunities for members and reaching for achievements never attempted before, such as the YOF grant. I think one major reflection I take out of this is that our largest struggles are the largest opportunities for growth, and challenges as individuals and organizations are best overcome through persistence. I look forward to a fantastic year, next year as we implement all that we’ve learned from this school year.

Future Plans: I will be majoring in biology at UT Austin! I hope to also minor in either psychology or sociology. It’s so crazy to think that I, and many of my other fellow members, will be graduating in a mere two months. I never believed it when they said these four years would fly by but lo and behold they sure did. Granted, we did lose a year and a half to online school, which hasn’t been...fun. However, I have to say I’m so proud at how our Key Club has taken the challenge head on and has still found so many ways to serve our community. I’ve found some of my closest friends being apart of this organization and I’ve had so many amazing experiences. People in Key Club are some of the most genuine and caring people you’ll meet. Despite the fact that we’ve been physically farther than ever, stuck only seeing each other through a screen, I’ve gotten so much closer with my fellow officers and we never take any interaction for granted. While I’m beyond excited to move on to this next chapter in life and continue to foster a passion for service in college, I’ll always remember the joy these past few years in Key Club have brought me. It’s been a pleasure to be apart of this organization and serve as one of your officers. Although we’ve managed to make it work this past year, I truly hope there will be some normalcy for everyone next year and you guys will finally be able to volunteer in person more.

Class of 2021

After this strange year we've all had to adjust to a new form of volunteering. We were all used to meeting up and working one and one with the community but now we work remotely for the most part. It's been a hard adjustment but I have grown to realize how diverse volunteering can be. Volunteering can come in several different forms such as sending cards to nursing homes and others making it more accessible to everyone. Overall I'm glad with how the year went and am sad to leave behind the club but it has opened my eyes to the many other possibilities of volunteering there are.

kc.lamar.editor@gmail.com Future Plans: Major in Environmental Science @ UT Austin

Hey guys, its been a long year! Graduating this year is like a blessing but also kind of scary. I feel this year has been fun, stressful, and weirdly fast. The great thing is that we are almost there (at the end I mean). There are so many things that we as volunteers can change so that we can live in a better world. I hope that all of you will enjoy your next years in high school or college or wherever you're going. Key Club has been part of me for four years and it has helped me change from a shy, distant girl to someone who has fallen in love with interacting with her community. I hope that all of y'all will enjoy next year with lots of in-person opportunities experience what we've lost this year! I cannot believe that this will be (probably) my last editor's not and I have to say it's been a pleasure to interact with y'all through this portal. Part of me just wants to graduate already but part of me already knows that I'll miss Lamar (yes I'm not crazy).

Thank you all for this chance and I wish y'all the best!

kc.lamar.webmaster@gmail.com This year sure has been different! At the beginning of the fall semester, I had high hopes of everything going back to the way they were by Thanksgiving Break. Yet here we are with less than 10 weeks left until summer and still mostly virtual. Though Key Club made almost a 180 degree flip from in-person to online service, I’m proud of how we handled the situation as a club. Rather than being discouraged, we rose above the challenge and continued to support important causes online. It’s incredible just how much change you can make if you look for the opportunity. Fingers crossed that we’re all back together in person next year!

and turns we all had to deal and work with. Key Club is all about volunteering and building friendships, so it was extremely difficult to reach that goal during quarantine. As we had to adapt to this change, we learned a lot of new ways we could serve online and we even learned how to hold socials online too! This year of Key Club will be one I’ll never forget and I can’t wait for next year.

RECAP

March has been an exciting month. We held out last social, had an event at the Arlington Public Library, and published our officer applications for next year! If you didn't get an application, unfortunately the deadline has passed to turn it in, but we hope that you'll consider being a member next year and apply again! Our social was on this game called "psych" where we had different topics to write a few words about such as "if Cleo to become famous for something what would it be?" and then we would pick our favorite ones. The choices that had the most votes were given the highest score and the person who had the highest score at the end won! It was super fun talking to each other as we don't get much of a chance anymore.

8 | March Recap

We also welcomed our new Kiwanis Club Sponsor Ms. Youngblood in our meeting on the 24th. APL event was held on the 1st, it was about making cards to seniors who were isolated. It was tons of fun and we got hold of 2 opportunities in April. Last but not least we also did shopping for Lifting Up Lamar with the help of the Youth Opporuntities Fund Grant. We gathered three shopping carts worth of items that will be donated to Lamar to support our fellow classmates in need. We spent about 2 hours at Walmart making sure to collect essentials that could be redistributed. Some people also donated items to Ms. Robbin's room. Thank you for that you are greatly appreciated! Items that can be donated will be included in the next page.

COMMUNITY SERVICE Sara Lim

13 | Community Service

Dorothy Height said that “without community service, we would not have a strong quality of life. It’s important to the person who serves as well as the recipient. It’s the way in which we ourselves grow and develop.” I think this quote is significant because service not only benefits you, as the server, but it helps everyone that you make an impact on. This is why I believe serving our community is important. Serving the community benefits the server in many ways. The most obvious reason is that you learn many unique skills while serving. You learn how to communicate with people while interacting with them during service opportunities. You learn how to practice leadership and organizational skills while coordinating service events. You also get to experience the joy of helping others in your community through service. This is also a great way to bond with your community and get to know it better. How does it feel whenever you receive a present? The joy, gratitude, and happiness that overwhelms you when you receive something is so special. Whenever you serve someone, they feel the same way like they just received a heart warming gift. By giving back to the community through service, you’re benefiting them and making them better as well. So, by serving the community, it not only impacts you, but it also benefits the receiver just as equally.

Tomorrow, some of my youth group friends from church and I will perform some worship songs for a dear teacher of ours. She is in recovery and we thought that by playing some music, it will cheer her up and make her feel uplifted. Oura little act of kindness that we’re going to show tomorrow will not only benefit us, but will make an even bigger impact for her. Just by taking an hour out of our day through our actions of service, she will be filled with joy and happiness too. I used to serve just to serve. I did it because others were. I did it out of habit. Now I see that serving the community not only helps myself grow as a better person and helps me learn new skills. But, it also touches each person that we serve too. In fact, it probably affects them even more with joy and appreciation. So why is it important to serve your community? It’s important because through your service you positively benefit both yourself and those who you are serving too.

EMILY WILSON

15 | Humans of TX Oklahoma

What’s up? My name is Emily Wilson, and I’m a junior at Lamar High School in Arlington. I’m the vice president of the Lamar High School Key Club and I also participate in tennis, orchestra, and NHS. I was born in China and adopted by my parents, so I’ve lived in Arlington, Texas my whole life. When I was younger, I went to Larson Elementary, and then I went to Nichols Junior High. When I’m not doing schoolwork, I’m generally practicing tennis, practicing my viola, or spending time with friends. My relationships with others are important to me, so I love to take any opportunity I can to make new relationships or foster my current ones. Student cooperative organizations like Key Club, UIL, or sports are where I’ve made some of my fondest memories. While growing up I always took a liking to school and tried my hardest to be an active member of the student body. Whether it was applying to be a student council representative in elementary or a leader on the varsity tennis team, I try to take every opportunity I can to lead and be in service to others. I’ve certainly learned a lot from all the organizations I’ve been a part of and have enjoyed each one for its different reasons, but I must say that Key Club is one of my favorites. I joined Key Club my freshman year of high school. My sophomore year I was voted to be the 11th-grade representative, and for my junior year, I am the vice president. Next year I plan to run for president of our Key Club. What I love about Key Club is how it’s an opportunity to be in service to others while fostering a community of service in itself. The volunteer opportunities Key Club provides are accessible to students and encouraging as members get to see the concrete changes they make in the community. The members of Key Club are people I know I can have a reliable personal connection with. I also love as an officer how I’m able to inspire others while also being in service to our general membership. Working with the officer team this year and last has been fantastic as I’m surrounded by individuals who aspire to benefit the community around them and are willing to put the work in to do so. Just from spending a short amount of time with them, I’ve seen incredible amounts of adaptability as the club adjusts to everything the past two years have thrown our way. Whether it’s creating online volunteer opportunities, such as donating through Free Rice or partnering with organizations to find socially distanced in-person events, our Key Club is prepared in our mission to serve. Throughout my high school experience, I can certainly say that Key Club is one of the best opportunities I’ve had. I must thank Kiwanis International for giving me the chance to be part of the Key Club family.

"WHAT I LOVE ABOUT KEY CLUB IS HOW IT’S AN OPPORTUNITY TO BE IN SERVICE TO OTHERS WHILE FOSTERING A COMMUNITY OF SERVICE IN ITSELF."

HOW MY VIEW OF KC HAS CHANGED By Haley Wehr

I can still remember the days of my freshman year. From getting lost in the hallways and finding myself at the mercy of some kind upperclassman who could point me in the right direction to experiencing my first homecoming game, it was undoubtedly an exciting time. My most memorable experience, however, was at a Lamar tradition that takes place at the beginning of each school year: Viking Fest. During this enormous gathering, the school is filled after hours with students of every grade level, and over fifty clubs line the hallways and cafeteria with stunning displays in hopes of attracting members (or wallets at the very least). The morning of the anticipated Viking Fest, a good friend of mine who was a junior at the time and the vice president of Lamar Key Club told me that I should join the organization. At the time, I had seen fliers posted in the hallways, but I had no idea what the point of Key Club even was. Still unsure, I told Joseph that I would think about it. Later that day, I discovered that my English teacher was one of the Key Club sponsors at our school.

17 | View of Key Club

Excitedly, she whipped one of the new t-shirts out of the boxes that had been mysteriously delivered to her room the class period prior and held it up for our class to behold. Instantly, I fell in love with the shirt’s design and decided that I absolutely had to sign up for Key Club as soon as possible. That evening, I raced through the doors of Lamar High School and rushed toward the Key Club table to sign up- an event that would soon alter the entire course of my high school experience. What began as a simple obsession over a magnificent t-shirt design soon metamorphosed into passion for service and an understanding of my unique role in the volunteering community. Moreover, when I was suddenly recruited to fill an empty position on the officer team as a sophomore last year, I quickly realized that Key Club is not just an organization that is present at Lamar High School…. It is a nationwide initiative to spread the joy of helping others and encourage pouring back into the community on a massive scale. For the first time, I realized just how big Key Club really is and just how much I wanted to remain a part of it. From my freshman year of bewilderment to my virtual junior year of trying to survive the demands of high school, my view of Key Club has changed immensely. Little did I know, a simple push from a friend and a love-at-first-sight connection with a t-shirt long ago would entirely change the course of my high school years. Through Key Club, I’ve deepened many of my closest friendships and found my true heart for helping others. It is undoubtedly an experience that I would not exchange for the world.

During the COVID pandemic, I definitely have gotten lazier and its been harder to get up and do things, but this spring break, we’ve went out to do lots of in person volunteering and I was reminded how wonderful serving our community was. This spring break we went to go shopping for our main service project Lifting Up Lamar where we used the Youth Opportunities Fund to purchase necessities for our classmates-in-need at the Walmart Supercenter. 19 | Spring Break

LEDCON 2021 BY PATRICK CHANG

LEDCON, as we know, is an event where lots of people from the Texas-Oklahoma region would gather and get to know each other, sort of like a get together. Originally named DCON for District convention, the name change came last year to better represent the true purpose, which was to bring light to leadership education. I’m excited to see all the forums and events that I can attend, because I am always looking for ways to become a better leader. Being a leader applies to almost every aspect of my life, as I help to run Lamar’s Key Club and other clubs as well. I believe that good leadership is a big driving factor in the success of getting work done, which is something that I am always a fan of. 21 | LEDCON 2021

A MOMENT IN KEY CLUB by Razan Shakoor

Character is built throughout various life lessons. You can learn that you value honesty because your little sibling stole your juice pouch and lied about it when you were a kid. Or you can learn that you love to help out because you always volunteer in class to get some paper from the supply closet. I believe that during your high school years your character is still being tediously constructed as you pick your colleges or career and even your first extracurricular. The first club that I joined in high school was Key Club. And throughout these past four years I have learned so many things, created life long friendships, and built my character through the various moments of volunteering around my community. One of the moments that has stood out to me as a character builder when reflecting about my time in key club was volunteering for the Salvation Army bell ringing. This event happens once a year normally in front of a store such as Walmart or Walgreens and a group of us team up and get donations from willing customers. At this event I was forced out of my comfort zone to help raise money for the cause as I had to sing.

23 | A Moment in Key Club

A newsletter is a regularly distributed publication that is generally about one main topic of interest to its subscribers. Newspapers and leaflets are types of newsletters. For example, newsletters are distributed at schools to inform parents about things that happen in that school. I remember walking up to the event frightened that I’d have to partake in carols and dancing in front of random people but at the end of the

day I really enjoyed that time. All of us kept singing Felis Navidad at the top of our lungs, laughing, and celebrating wildly every time someone donated. And I even grew closer to some of the newer key club members too with this event which was something I was struggling with due to my shyness. This brought me great relief to have connected with the members due to this event since I felt like I was failing at being an officer during my first couple of months. Overall this event took a turn for me. Going in with so much dread about asking random people for donations to breaking out of my shyness and singing with all the power in my lungs was not something I expected but something I love looking back on. Throughout my years in key club I have learned a lot. I learned that I love to volunteer and how to put on temporary tattoos properly. But most importantly I have developed my character a little bit more. I went from an extremely shy person to someone who loves to take on officer positions and go out of their comfort zone. Leaving Key Club behind will be hard for me but its developed a love for volunteering and helping out my community, so I hope in the future I’ll continue to do so and that others who are signing up next year will love it as much as I do!

NAL'S SERVICE PARTNERS The Army strives to strengthen local communities through service and to build character and leadership among youth such as Key Club members. Through the Kiwanis Speakers Army personnel can connect with Kiwanisfamily clubs at club meetings, raising awareness of what today’s Army can provide and offer access to local Army support and resources. The Army also gives exceptional opportunities in higher education that can help young people throughout their lives.

Since 2014, Up with People and Kiwanis International members have teamed up to serve our communities, inspire youth and expand our impact in the world. that’s what Kiwanis International and Up with People share. Up with People programs open a door to service and intercultural understanding—whether it’s through a local show, leadership, and cultural workshops or providing service and travel experiences for young adults. Both organizations strive to ‘serve the children of the world’ and ‘empower youth to take action’ through our partnership.
