VikingFest is the event of the school year for membership, because that's when we get everyone to sign up for the club. Unfortunately, our numbers have been dwindling for the past couple years, and despite our efforts to recruit this year, our numbers were about twenty lower than from the reported 2018-2019 Key Club year. While we face the problem of decreasing membership, we have been blessed with more increased involvement from the members that do join. We look forward to have more people join though, as our last opportunity to join for the year is the general October meeting.

The River Legacy W.A.T.E.R. Festival was a Festival for young children to explore the functions of water. It was a lot of fun for both the volunteers and the children. Our volunteers arrived around 8:45, and were assigned to different spots at different booths. Some made crafts, some did tattoos, some did the cornhole toss, and others introduced children to how amazing water can be. Many of our volunteers surprised us that day, because the volunteering event was announced on a very short notice, even before our first meeting. So it was a such an exhilaration that so many of us came, and the Festival was such a wonder that it reminded us why we really volunteer; to serve the community and bring joy to it. Additionally, we got to connect with Summit Prep's Key Club.

Humans of TexasOklahoma This is a boy who grew up in Arlington, Texas. He has a twin brother Max, and an older sister who goes to the University of Texas at Dallas. Micah enjoys skateboarding, art, and violin. Some extracurricular activities he is involved in robotics, orchestra, National Art Honor Society, and Key Club. Hearing this, I was really intrigued, for robotics, orchestra, and National Art Honor Society, were already very big commitments; why did he want to join Key Club? He said to me that “he wanted to be involved more, and Key Club is perfect for that”. He says that he “wanted to be involved in the school more, [and he does] a good amount of the things for the community already.” He is well informed about Key Club, and he expressed his intentions for a cord and stole when he graduates. Because he is a sophomore, I was really impressed, because only Junior and Senior hours counted towards the cord and stole. Micah says that his best experience with Key Club was pancake day last year, because it was something he never thought he would be a part in. “Pancake day was special because I got to be a part of something that not many people get to experience, and I like helping people.” says Micah, thinking about fond memories of the Kiwanis Pancake day we volunteered in last semester. He says “Key Club to me is important because it teaches you how to be a leader in your community and to take charge in helping others in need.

A TIME FOR CHANGE As a part of the 2019-2020’s officer team, this year will be our year for the most change. Some changes we as an officer team have decided is to make is that this year, the officer team will get the chance to go to the District Convention for the first time in LHS Key Club’s history. We also started doing monthly newsletters, which could be found on our newly improved web page. This year, we also introduced webmaster positions and a bulletin editor position, to help with the amounts of change we’re making to further benefit our community. Our new officer team is excited about this new year of change, and even more excited about the volunteer opportunities we can bring to help serve our community.

Creating a Club that Cares By: Jade Ha It’s amazing to see a service-based organization like Key Club take on a project such as Culture4Caring. I say this because the whole premise of such a club is to volunteer and serve the local community. Therefore, you could argue that the purpose of Key Club in itself is to foster kind, thoughtful members that care for their community. However, for District Governor, Ashna Patel to take on this project is by no means redundant but instead highly effective. Why stop at the community? The members of Key Club should spread love and kindness among each other just as much as they do around the community. All this to say, after learning about this new initiative at the regional training conference over the summer, we, the officers of Lamar high school’s Key Club, knew it was a must to implement back in our own club. We wanted our members to not only care for their community but also each other. Admittedly, we weren’t sure where to start. In the past years we haven't been able to get members more engaged with each other outside of volunteering. Socials were usually a bust, we seldom had any club bonding, and we for sure had a history of not participating in the district project. However, this is the year of change in the Lamar Key Club, and you can bet that we’re going to do our part to create a culture for caring.

P r o j e c t 663 million people all over the world don’t have access to safe drinking water. The Thirst Project strives to fix this water crisis by building wells for communities in need all over. Thus far, they have been able to travel to 13 countries and build 3,018 wells and other water projects!
