Tailor your waste collection services and reduce landfill Did you know you can order a larger recycling or general waste bin, or request extra bins for any of our three kerbside waste services operated by Newcastle City Council? To help reduce waste sent to landfill, additional recycling and green waste services are offered at lower prices than for general waste. If your recycling bin usually fills up well before collection day or you have lots of extra garden waste, upgrading these services will both cut landfill waste and cost you less than changing your general waste arrangements. Instant homework help is here High school students across Newcastle can now access a free online service for help with their homework and guidance on good study habits. Newcastle Region Library’s ‘Your Tutor’ service is available through the library’s website from Sunday to Friday every week between 3pm and 10pm. The service provides students with expert one-onone guidance in English, maths and science, and help with research for school assignments. ‘Your Tutor’ mentors, all professional teachers and graduates of Australian universities, teach students valuable skills in guiding them to find answers for themselves. “Local students deserve this kind of accessible education service,” Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said. “And we are pleased to give families the same benefits seen elsewhere around the country. “It’s easy and quick to connect, and the tutors are all specialists in their subject areas. “Students can ask questions about English and request guidance for assignments on other humanities subjects, or go through maths or science problems

they don’t understand. “The service is also useful for parents who don’t have enough time to help their children with homework or who simply don’t remember school curriculum content.” Young library members can connect anonymously by logging on with their library card number at home or at the library. Students can sign in for free with their Newcastle Region Library card at: https://yourtutor.com. au/connect/clients/newcastle-regional-library/ authenticate

CHAMBER

Chat by Nathan Errington President of Hamilton Chamber of Commerce

Hamilton is leading the way

I am personally very proud of Hamilton. I feel that there is a positive vibe across the suburb. Vacant shops are filling, shops, cafés and restaurants and busy and generally people are excited about what is happening in our cosmopolitan suburb. I want to say ‘Thank You’ for your daily efforts and what that brings to Hamilton. It is the hard work and commitment of those who run businesses, those who work here and those who visit Hamilton that is driving this positive vibe. This has been enhanced by the continuing work with the NSW Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald MLC, the Department of Premier and Cabinet and other strategic key stakeholders, to provide a cohesive and progressive approach to supporting Hamilton’s growing role as a key inner city transport, entertainment and business hub. Thank you also, to those who have participated in the James Street Community Consultation process. The Chamber has received some terrific feedback. Directors have also spoken with local Police, Council and other stakeholders and we are confident that this feedback will inform a number of planning processes and enable us to secure funding to support a better approach for the Plaza. Last month the Chamber held another terrific member networking event at The Kent, where we heard from the team behind the scenes of the Supercars event to be held in Newcastle in 24 to 26 November. The event is expected to invest millions of dollars into the local economy promising lots of opportunities for Hamilton businesses. I’ll see you in cosmopolitan Hamilton.

HAMILTON CHAMBER is your business… Hamilton Chamber is a not-for-profit entity overseen by an elected management committee of volunteers selected from our membership base. Full membership is open to any business owner/operator or building owner within the Special Benefit Rate zones. We have a modest staff and a group of active volunteer local business owners to manage our day to day activities. Hamilton Chamber is a business advocacy group tasked with driving the Hamilton community forward and revitalising our great suburb. We use place-making projects, public events, partnerships with business and organisations, and strategic planning to bring life into our CBD. SOME OF OUR BEST-KNOWN PROJECTS INCLUDE: ■ Free wi-fi throughout Beaumont St ■ A Taste of Beaumont including iconic restaurants and cafes ■ Some of Newcastle city’s best street festivals like Beaumont Street Carnivale & China Week Festival If you’d like to know more about what we do, we encourage business owners/operators, residents, and other interested parties to participate in our Hamilton Monthly Networking Event which allow you to work closely with the community and our organisation.

A new beat for Thursdays at the Gal Since early February the northern end of Beaumont St has been grooving to a new beat coming from the Gallipoli Legion Club’s upper level with an exciting new project promoting live and local music in the venue. Led by a dynamic team of arts and entertainment professionals, Artemis Horton and Peter Wohlrab, Key Player Productions aims to provide an opportunity for local artists to perform regularly, to boost patronage and in turn, street safety in the area. “We’re very excited to be associated with Key Player Productions and support live music in Hamilton and be involved in providing community-oriented activity encouraging all ages and demographics. From a club perspective our aim is to bring back the glory days when the Gallipoli

Legion Club was a vibrant hub of entertainment” Michael Cleary, CEO of the Gallipoli Legion Club told Hamilton Local. “We’re excited to provide great local musicians with a venue to regularly showcase their talent.” Artemis Horton said. “We’ve been

fortunate to have the backing of many local professionals to get this project off the ground”. The event is held every Thursday evening from 7.30pm Entry is $15per person at the door. For more information call Artemis on 0410 049 888.

Humans of Hamilton

Lu Quade

Let’s meet Lu Quade or Luke Wade as he was once known. You might recognise Lu from around Hamilton, bouncing along Beaumont Street with his 7 year old daughter, Rosie or rolling by on his skateboard with his dog Porridge running loyally beside. We met in the madness that is Suspension, offering the perfect backdrop to find out more about this Human. I first greeted Lu’s adorable dog, Porridge who was hiding under the cafe table. Porridge is a medium sized ‘bitsa’ dog with the coolest mohawk-like strip of hair down its back. Happy, friendly and licky, Porridge made friends with fellow Suspension customers during the course of our chat. Lu moved to Hamilton two decades ago. Unlike our previous Humans of Hamilton, Jono and Angela, it was by accident that Lu found himself living in Hamilton. In 1997, renting in Hamilton was easy, readily available and cheap. Over the years he has lived in about six different rentals in the Hamilton area. Having moved away and then returning, he has spent time in Melbourne where his Dad lives. Lu has even lived as a Hare Krishna. A ‘cult-like’ experience described by Lu but something he was happy to talk about. Lu first became involved because he liked the ideas of healthy, clean food and living. As time went on he started reading more about the philosophy of the Hare Krishnas and ended up Page 16 > Hamilton Local > June 2017

A regular feature by Ahn Wells

Lu Quade and Porridge living with a group for two years. Why is Luke better known as Lu Quade? Lu created it for his music and art because his ‘real’ name is already taken by another musician. Although Luke doesn’t behind Lu Quade, it seems stage names often take over when you’re a musician or visual artist and since Lu is both it’s not surprising that his ‘real’ name has long been lost in the passing of gigs and exhibitions. This year Lu opened a shop called Tiny Boats at Softly on Maitland Road that focuses on zines. If you don’t know what a zine is, google it and you will find a plethora of descriptions. It’s such a huge movement that the Australian Museum of Contemporary Art holds a fair once a year for such enthusiasts to meet, trade, sell and make zines together. You’ll

even find Tiny Boats listed in their program as a place to find zines within Australia. For Lu, zines seem to be an extension of his artmaking. Zinemaking lends itself to his Outsider Art sensibilities of being made by people who are self-taught and motivated to create something completely outside the confines of academics and tends to be in the naïve style for which Lu Quade’s art is recognisable as. Look out for Lu around Hamilton, say hello or visit him and Porridge in Tiny Boats. Follow him on Instagram @lu.quade. Thank you Lu for being my third Human of Hamilton. If you know a ‘Human of Hamilton’ whose story we should tell please email us at info.hamiltonlocal@ gmail.com

No Lights or No Lycra returns Get excited because No Lights No Lycra (NLNL) has returned. What’s that you say? It is a place for people to come and dance freely in a friendly, nonthreatening, drug and alcohol free atmosphere. NLNL is an event that occurs in a dimly lit room: with the lights low, people can truly dance without worrying about what they look like. It is a time to dance independently in the company of others. NLNL is not about technique and being a ‘good’ dancer, it’s about the experience of dancing with no one watching and the joy that this brings. It is a place to exercise at your own pace while having fun. It promotes a healthy mind and a healthy body. It’s about making dance accessible for everyone.

It is open to all ages, genders, backgrounds and demographics. NLNL is a place to shake out the stresses of the week, let go of your inhibitions and completely be yourself. Talking is discouraged and there

are no spectators allowed, only participants. NLNL is held each Wednesday from 6-7pm at the Polish Cultural Centre, 122 Chatham St, Broadmeadow. Entry is $5 per person.

Hidden Hamilton Gow’s Drapery

In its 1920s heyday, Gow’s Drapery in Hamilton (see photograph on facing page) rivalled Newcastle city department stores such as Winn’s and Scott’s. Located on the corner of Beaumont and Cleary streets Gow’s was ‘the place to shop’. Founded by Ramsay and Fanny Gow, the prosperity of Gow’s Drapery enabled them to build the stately family home known as ‘Fettercairn’ in Lindsay Street in 1903. ‘Fettercairn’ is a rare survivor of Hamilton’s late Victorian built environment. When Ramsay died suddenly in 1907, his family had a set of memorial iron gates erected in his honour at the James Street entrance to Gregson Park. Fanny, assisted by other family members, continued the business. Over time, the store grew to occupy two buildings: the original building had women’s wear and manchester/haberdashery; the menswear department was a separate building linked to the main shop.

By Ruth Cotton

In 2014 I discovered four women who began their working lives at Gow’s in the 1940s and early 1950s -- Val Kavanagh, Gwen Fuge, Phyllis Watson and Joan Little. They relived their experiences as young school leavers ‘working in retail’. I wondered what one saw first, walking into the ground floor of Gow’s? Skeins of wool,’ Phyllis had replied. ‘A whole wall of knitting wool.’

The corner of Beaumont and Cleary Streets, where Gow & Co. once stood, is today occupied by Chemist Warehouse and other businesses How priorities have changed. Today, in a department store like Myers or David Jones, we are faced with a sea of cosmetics. A couple of the women had experienced working in Gow’s during World War II, when nylon stockings were scarce. Young women coloured their legs and then used an eyebrow pencil to expertly draw a seam down the backs of their legs. What contortion – and hand-eye coordination – would have been required! In the early 1960s, overtaken by the changing retail environment and competition from the larger shopping centres, Gow’s Drapery closed its doors. It was the end of an era. This is an edited extract from my book Hidden Hamilton: Uncovering stories of Hamilton, NSW. Hidden Hamilton and More Hidden Hamilton are available from a number of local booksellers and newsagents – to buy online or check for an outlet near you, go to http://hunterpress.com.au/ customerinformation.html

MONEY

Matters by Margaret Glenn CPA of Pritchard Partners

Tax time tips

As tax time approaches, here are some tips from the team at Pritchards to help you get the best result. 1. Interest income: All interest received from bank accounts must be included as part of your assessable income. 2. Private health insurance and the Medicare levy surcharge: Most people with private health insurance currently receive a rebate and is income tested. Additionally, Medicare Levy Surcharge is applied to people who pay tax but do not pay private hospital cover.

3. Spouse income details: Your spouse’s taxable income affects certain items including the Medicare levy and surcharge, as well as some tax offsets. 4. Home office expenses: If you work from home, you can claim the running costs of a home office. This can be done by splitting the cost of heating/cooling and lighting between what is used domestically and what is used for “income producing purposes”. 5. Purchasing an investment property: It is often a good idea to have a tax depreciation report completed. Not only is the cost of the report tax deductible, but in most cases it will offer substantial deductions relating to the depreciation of fixtures and fittings. 6. Review your financial affairs: It pays to look ahead. Now is a great time to review your current investments, assess the effectiveness of last year’s financial plans and put in place a strategy for the current tax year. If you are unsure then there are plenty of qualified accounting firms in the region who can give you the best advice about your tax return or talk to the Pritchard team located at 10 Murray Street Hamilton on 4920 2877. Margaret Glenn is a Certified Practicing Accountant and director of Rees Pritchard Pty Limited. Established in 1951, and locally owned and operated.

Optometry: changing before your eyes

Optometry is a changing profession. For most of us when we think of the word Optometry the immediate image that jumps to mind is “the guys who prescribe and make my glasses”. This is still true and has been since Optometry was first practiced in Australia. Modern day Optometry has evolved so that the educational curriculum additionally includes intensive medical training in the diagnosis and management of eye disease. In NSW the Optometry degree at the UNSW in Sydney became a 5 year undergraduate course to include training in the therapeutic management of eye inflammation, infection and glaucoma. As such Optometry graduates from 2010 onward in NSW and previously practising optometrists who have completed the post graduate course in therapeutic management are able to prescribe medicated eye drops for these conditions previously only prescribed by your G.P or Ophthalmologist (Eye Surgeon). Optometry now has an even closer relationship with the profession with Ophthalmology. Optometrists are regularly invited to manage or co-manage such eye conditions by the local Eye Surgeons. The Newcastle area is comprehensively serviced by some of the best Ophthalmologists in Australia and local Optometrists regularly refer on to these Eye Surgeons for conditions such as cataract, glaucoma and macular degeneration. No referall is required from your G.P. to see your Optometrists. Here at Sight Savers Hamilton both principal Optometrist, Julio Fuentes practice owner for 5 years and new staff Optometrist, Ben Bolton, have been therapeutically qualified since 2012. Between them they have more than 35 years of prior experience. You only get one set of eyes. Look after them.

On Saturday 10 June the very first HAMILTON ART CRAWL is happening. Three Hamilton galleries, Acrux Art Gallery, Gallery 139 and Studio 21 Art Space will come together to celebrate their official opening events. The gallery director’s have organised their openings to land on the same day with staggering times, so that patrons can go from one gallery to the next. These openings provide the best time to meet the exhibiting artists in a relaxed environment and socialise with people who share your interests. Over time, you end up seeing familiar faces and friendships form. This is the magic of art, it brings people together, like music it acts as a buffer and a reason to strike up a conversation with a stranger. Art Crawls are not a new concept to Newcastle or any art community for that matter. For each exhibition that happens, there is an opening and they regularly fall on the same nights at various galleries around Newcastle making for the perfect unofficial art crawl, that’s if you know about them. This first HAMILTON ART CRAWL is removing that work for the public, with the three gallery directors working together to promote this one exhibition opening event. The gallery directors also want to make the event easy for those new to Newcastle and it’s art scene. An afternoon wandering around the streets of Hamilton, visiting art galleries with a group of friends is my idea of the perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon. Plus there’s an almost endless choices of cafes, bars & restaurants along Beaumont St to round off the night. PHARMACY

Matters by Anthony Piggott

of Piggott’s Pharmacies Hamilton & Hamilton South

Eye care

Our eyes, the ‘window to the soul’, are one of the body’s most important assets. Maintaining good eye health should be a priority for all. During July, The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) Eye Foundation runs its JulEYE campaign. JulEYE aims to raise community awareness of eye health issues, as well as funds for research projects into the causes and cures of vision impairment and blindness. The campaign also supports international development projects whose goals are aligned with those of the Eye Foundation.

Doctors, pharmacists and optometrists can help find the cause of red eyes or dry eyes and advise on treatment. Your pharmacist can help you to select the right treatment for minor eye conditions like conjunctivitis and red eye. Some eye drops and ointments can be obtained from a pharmacy without a prescription. Your pharmacist will always refer you to a doctor if they feel a condition requires more attention. Regular testing from birth encourages good eye health and helps to avoid permanent damage and vision loss. The RANZCO Eye Foundation encourages testing every two years. Ask relatives about your family’s eye health history, and have your eyes tested, during JulEYE. Your local GP or optometrist can give you a referral to an ophthalmologist for testing Up-to-date advice about eye conditions and treatments is also available from pharmacies providing the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia’s Self Care Fact Cards. Titles include Glaucoma and Red and Dry Eyes. For the nearest Self Care pharmacy location phone the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia on 1300 369 772, or Ask Piggotts!

LAW

Matters by Rob Brook of Newcastle Legal

Will disputes

Disputing the fairness of a Will is becoming increasingly common. When making a Will there are strategies you can use to protect it from challenge. If you wish to challenge a Will there are a range of matters to consider and careful legal advice is required. Receiving a gift or grant from an estate potentially provides spouses, de-facto partners, ex-partners, children and other past dependents with a rare opportunity to receive a windfall and get ahead. The law used to be that persons are entitled to require distribution of their estate in whatever way they wish. Governments in each State and Territory have now intervened to change this by creating “family provision” laws. Family provision law in NSW is intended to act as a safety net to protect a Will-maker’s family members who are deemed to have been given an “insufficient” sum or excluded from the Will completely. It is a myth that if you leave something small to a child but otherwise cut him or her out of the Will you will prevent a successful claim for additional provision. Where the deceased did not have a Will, family provision law acts as a safety net for those who are ineligible to inherit under intestacy laws that dictate how a person’s estate must be dealt with. The more a former dependent of the deceased is in need the more likely it is that a claim for family provision will succeed, subject to other considerations set out in the law. A large majority of Will disputes are settled without a Court hearing by the parties entering into a deed of settlement. Where an undeserving claim for family provision has been made, the trend is for Courts to order that the claimant must pay the estate its legal costs in defending the Will.

SPINE

Matters by David Diehm

of Family Life Chiropractic

Texting can be a pain in the neck, literally

Today there are more smart devices in Australia than there are people, it has revolutionised the way we interact with the world around us. It has also given rise to some new health terms like “text neck”. A medical term that didn’t appear in any

of my university textbooks fifteen years ago. That crook neck you have woken up with or stiffness towards the end of the day may well stem from that little device you spend most of your day attached to. Many people are spending an average of 2-4 hours each day looking at their mobile devices, which results in altered postures and pressures on the neck. The natural curve for the neck is to bend backwards, when we look down at our devices this curve is reversed and the force put through the neck joints and nerves can be up to five times greater in this position. In children, the spine should be developing three normal curves, yet it’s becoming increasingly apparent that text neck is on the rise instead. Some useful tips to keep your spine happy when staying connected; * Raise your phone closer to eye level. * Take breaks every 20 minutes, set an alarm, you will forget. * Work on your posture. * Stretch your spine regularly and change positions to alleviate stress on your neck and spine.
