Time to vote folks...
All Newcastle residents 18 years of age and over are required to vote in the Local Government election to be held on Saturday 9 September. At the polling booth you will be given two ballot papers. One is for your choice of three Councillors to represent the community and your local Ward in particular. The Hamilton Local readership area falls within Ward 2. Polling places around Hamilton include schools, community halls and church halls. Four groups or parties are standing three candidates each for election as Councillors in Ward 2 including the Labor and Liberal parties, The Greens and the Newcastle Independents. The second ballot paper will be for the election of the Lord Mayor. There are seven candidates vying for this position including the incumbent Nuatali Nelmes (Labor), David Compton (Liberal), Therese Doyle (The Greens) and four independents, Ron Brown, Kath Elliott, Rod Holding and Steve O’Brien. More about each of the candidates for Mayor and Councillor can be found on pages 10 to 13 of this issue.
If you know you will be unable to attend a polling booth on election day you can apply for a Postal or Prepoll vote. More information about these early voting options is available at www.elections.nsw.gov.au/ or by phoning the NSW Electoral Commission on 1300 135 736. The Electoral Commission issue fines to those who do not vote in the election. At previous elections these fines have been $55.

CHAMBER
Chat by Nathan Errington President of Hamilton Chamber of Commerce
Strength in local chambers
In the past few weeks the business community of Hamilton has had the opportunity to work more closely with our counterparts in local chambers across the city. Most recently, we worked with chambers and Business Improvement Associations of Mayfield, Throsby Basin, Adamstown, Newcastle Now, Wallsend, and New Lambton/Lambton to hold a Lord Mayoral debate. And while there has been much said about the politics of the night in the media and on social platforms, the objective was to give local business people the opportunity to see how each of the hopefuls might work with them in the future. The real issues for local business remain simple for most of us. We want to work with a city that understands the every-day issues that businesses face while collaborating to create an environment where we can grow and compete. Yes, this is about parking strategies, transport solutions and major events, but for the most part it’s about the simple ways that local council can work better with chambers and their members to create great places for people to live, work and play. Understanding issues around council compliance, funding models for business improvement associations, practical improvements to our streetscapes and navigating the endless development application processes, remain on the business agenda. What is very clear from the past few weeks is that there are many people who make up the local chambers of this city who are committed and passionate about supporting business and the network they form is a strong and determined. There is great strength in local chambers – please talk to us about how we can work with your business.
HAMILTON CHAMBER is your business… Hamilton Chamber is a not-for-profit entity overseen by an elected management committee of volunteers selected from our membership base. Full membership is open to any business owner/operator or building owner within the Special Benefit Rate zones. We have a modest staff and a group of active volunteer local business owners to manage our day to day activities. Hamilton Chamber is a business advocacy group tasked with driving the Hamilton community forward and revitalising our great suburb. We use place-making projects, public events, partnerships with business and organisations, and strategic planning to bring life into our CBD. SOME OF OUR BEST-KNOWN PROJECTS INCLUDE: ■ Free wi-fi throughout Beaumont St ■ A Taste of Beaumont including iconic restaurants and cafes ■ Some of Newcastle city’s best street festivals like Beaumont Street Carnivale & China Week Festival If you’d like to know more about what we do, we encourage business owners/operators, residents, and other interested parties to participate in our Hamilton Monthly Networking Event which allow you to work closely with the community and our organisation.

Meet the candidates for
Councillor in Ward 2
Four groups of candidates have nominated for the position of Councillor (Ward 2) at the upcoming City of Newcastle election to be held on Saturday 9 September. Hamilton Local invited the lead candidate from each group to tell our readers something about themselves and their vision for Council if elected. Their responses appear here in the same order that they will appear on the ballot paper as determined by the Electoral Commission of NSW.
Kath Elliott Independent
on families, and advocate for independence in Council. “There is no place for party politics in local government. Councillors need to do what is best for their communities and get on with the job of delivering services and infrastructure,” she said. Kath is former President of Lambton High School P&C, introduced the Newcastle Fare Free Bus Zone and Newcastle Livesites in 2006 when CEO of the Newcastle Alliance. She was a board member of Newcastle’s Tantrum Theatre, and is a member of the interview panel for medical students at Newcastle University. Kath is a board member of Huntlee Academy, Women Sport Australia and Disabled Wintersports Australia. Kath holds a Bachelor of Arts and an Advanced Diploma in Business Management. She is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Kath wrote the first community consultation strategy for Newcastle City Council after changes to the NSW Local Government Act in 1993.
Brad Luke Liberal
with 2 years as the Deputy Lord Mayor and a period as the Acting Lord Mayor of Newcastle. He has fought strongly against rate increases while Labor councillors have increased rates. He is most proud of overcoming Labor opposition and using his casting vote to proceed with the Anzac Memorial Walk. This project has proved to be an amazing attraction for Newcastle, both for local residents and as a tourist attraction. He is also proud of the work that was done to turn the finances of council around and put the budget into surplus WITHOUT the need for extra rate increases. As the CEO of a large local financial business, he knows how important it is to control the council budget. Soon after the Labor Mayor was elected three years ago, Labor and Green Councillors have pushed through extraordinary rate increases that still have another 2 years of massive increases to come. This will result in almost a 50% increase to your rates. Brad will continue to fight to limit rate increases to ratepayers and to ensure that you receive value for the rates you pay. Council needs to remember that it is your money we are spending.
Carol Duncan Labor
Kath Elliott is a local business woman standing with the Newcastle Independents. Kath campaigned against the Labor/Greens’ 46.9% rate rise in the Ward 3 by election, and is still concerned about its impact on Newcastle families. Brad Luke is an experienced Kath will vote to cap the rates Councillor having been on Labor’s lead candidate in Ward 2 to CPI, easing cost pressures Newcastle Council for 9 years, is Carol Duncan. Carol is a highly Page 10 > Hamilton Local > September 2017
experienced writer, interviewer, speaker, consultant, and multiplatform content creator in areas including news, health, education, science, politics and music, and is best known for her time as a presenter on 1233 ABC Newcastle. Carol created the Lost Newcastle Facebook group, which boasts 33,000 members and shares stories of the history of Newcastle and the Hunter. Carol’s career in journalism has spanned for over 25 years and she was a member of the 2007 Walkley Award-winning ABC Newcastle team. Carol was the inaugural winner of the NSW Cancer Council award for Excellence in Reporting, and awarded the 2007 NSW Premier’s Public Sector Awards medal. Carol has a keen interest in health, education, social issues and politics. As a member of the Newcastle Labor team, Carol has worked with Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes and Labor Councillors on developing a comprehensive suite of policies for the entire City – including Ward 2. During the last two and a half years, Labor has delivered for Newcastle, boosting economic opportunities and leading the City’s transformation into an emerging global city. Labor is committed to communities right across Newcastle, and will work in Ward 2 to protect and enhance local services; upgrade local infrastructure including in Adamstown and Hamilton; protect parks and upgrade playground facilities; deliver growth while protecting local history and heritage; support the arts and local live music industry, and lobby for Art Gallery funding; and build on the success of Labor led coastal revitalisation projects such as Bathers Way, including by upgrading the Newcastle Ocean Baths.
Therese Doyle The Greens
As a Greens councillor since 2012 I have consistently stood up loudly and clearly to defend the interests of the residents of Newcastle. Some of the achievements which I am most proud of are the rollout of council’s cycleway network; a council-funded program for community arts development; saving key western lands from inappropriate development; persistently promoting openness, transparency and accountability, getting council to join the Climate Council’s Cities Power Partnership and improving climate change initiatives. The Greens team on council will strongly press for all planning powers to return to Newcastle. Let’s return decisions about Newcastle to the people of Newcastle! We will continue to work for genuine consultation between council and the community. We will promote socially and ecologically sustainable development for the city, including affordable social and community housing; for an urban renewal strategy that meets residents’ rather than developers’ needs; promote healthy lifestyles through good council facilities and active transport links throughout the city
We will promote and develop, with community input, a plan for Newcastle to move beyond coal and advocate for State and Federal support for a just transition for Newcastle and the Hunter where young people and workers in coalrelated employment receive wellresourced and funded retraining in sustainable industries based on clean technologies. Therese Doyle was elected to Newcastle City Council as Greens councillor in Ward 2 in September 2012. Before her election to council she was a high school science teacher, head teacher and education officer with the Department of Education. Therese is married with two adult daughters. She moved to Newcastle in 2002 and loves her adopted home. __________________
Meet the candidates for
Lord Mayor
We invited each of the seven to candidates for election as Mayor to tell our readers something about themselves and their vision for Council if elected. Their responses appear below in the order that their names will appear on the ballot paper.
Rod Holding Independent
Hamilton Local > September 2017 > Page 11
(continued from page 11) I’ve lived in the Hunter Valley for thirty years and Newcastle for seven years. I have had many occupations and currently I’m a removalist, this job keeps me fit and most days provide different challengers to complete. For me the issues are, what are the jobs going to be for children in the future when the world’s changing so quickly. Can we save our biosphere from collapse as global warming takes hold, is the toxic overload across the planet reversible and will nuclear war be averted? Infrastructure needs building to transition Newcastle into a sustainable energy future but resources are being squandered by a revolving door of stupid, greedy politicians, bureaucrats and developers. Orica’s huge explosive storage dump is threatening to blow Newcastle to smithereens at any moment while Williamstown’s water contamination scandal is ignored. Newcastle has a secretive council not consulting with the community while bulldozing through a corrupt state government agenda. I will work toward solutions as part of our community.
Kath Elliott Independent
Kath Elliott is standing as a Independent candidate for Lord Mayor as well as a Ward 2 Councillor. See her profile on page 10.

Nuatali Nelmes Labor
Traffic Engineer and Transport Planner for Northern Transport Planning and Engineering established by Ron and Libby Brown in 1992. Resigned from Roads and Traffic Authority in 1992 as Regional Transport Planner having worked for DMR/RTA for 22 years. Professional experience included road construction and maintenance work in Walgett, Mittagong and Sydney. Local community work with South Wallsend Public School, Elermore Vale Community Centre, Elermore Vale Carols By Candlelight, Mattara Festival, King St Fair. Engaged with Newcastle City Centre Business Community for 20 years. President Newcastle Hunter Valley Folk Club for 10 years. Concerned that the planning process for Light Rail in the CBD has been inadequate and control over future use of the rail corridor must effectively rest with Council and the local Community. Transport needs for the rest of the Newcastle Council area also require careful attention and Council needs to engage with the new private public transport
Page 12 > Hamilton Local > September 2017
Nuatali Nelmes has been the Lord Mayor of Newcastle for almost three years, and leads the Newcastle Labor team on Council. Nuatali holds a Bachelor of Business with a double major in industrial relations/human resource management and marketing from the University of Newcastle, and worked in small business and recruitment before being elected to Council in 2008. Throughout her time on Council, Nuatali has championed the revitalisation of Newcastle’s coastline including Bathers Way; and worked to protect and improve vital Council services such as Blackbutt Reserve, pools and libraries, to provide all Novocastrians with equitable access to high-quality public facilities. Nuatali is proud to have overseen record infrastructure investment
into Newcastle, as well as record development application approvals (more than $2 Billion in the last two years), which stimulates the local economy and creates jobs throughout the City. Nuatali is Newcastle’s second female Lord Mayor after popular 1970s-era Labor Lord Mayor Joy Cummings, and is the youngest Lord Mayor of Newcastle. Nuatali was raised and educated in Newcastle, is married with three children and has enjoyed a representative sporting career in basketball. If re-elected, Nuatali and the Newcastle Labor team will continue the economic transformation and revitalisation of Newcastle; fighting for an integrated public transport network including an expansion of Light Rail by completing planning work to connect light rail to Broadmeadow, the University and John Hunter; completing flood mitigation works in Wallsend; improve parks, footpaths and green spaces; realise the benefits of major sporting and tourist events such as Supercars; and maintaining local services and hard-fought financial sustainability. Under Nuatali’s leadership, the Newcastle Labor led Council has a comprehensive, fully costed Long Term Financial Plan endorsed by IPART, and achieved financial Fit for the Future status.

Council needs to be more people focused and less compliant with the demands of developers. We deserve a council oriented toward community need, not developer greed. Hidden Hamilton The Masonic Hall
These days, it’s hard to imagine what it was like before Medicare and Centrelink became part of our vocabulary. So in Hamilton’s early coal mining days, how did people manage when the sudden loss of a family breadwinner left a family destitute? It was organisations like the Freemasons that came to the rescue. With its strong networking capacity, the Freemasons cemented the community in ways we might envy today. The Hamilton Lodge, Star in the East, was formed in 1886. Its first meeting place was the Northern Star Hotel, and then the Mechanics’ Institute on Tudor Street. It was not until 1907 that the purpose built, single storey Masonic Hall was opened at 104 Beaumont Street. Newcastle gained another fine building designed by prolific architect Frederick Menkens. A second storey was added in 1918. Many Novocastrians will remember having a father or an uncle who was a Mason, but would know little or nothing about what happened at meetings. events like Christmas parties were eagerly anticipated by members’ children. At its peak, the Freemasons was one of the largest men’s organisations in the world. Over time, though, its numbers dwindled. In 1981 the building was put up for sale. Purchased by a unit trust set up by Newcastle solicitor Peter Evans, the former Masonic Hall was rented out over many years for various commercial uses. When the Hogs Breath Café moved to Honeysuckle in 2011, the time was right for something totally different. Peter and Suzanne Evans partnered with their new tenants Chad Taylor, Adam Baker and Shane Brunt. The Masonic Hall would become the venue for a bold new contemporary function centre, right in the centre of Hamilton: The Depot on Beaumont. Varelle Hardy
This month I was lucky enough to visit the home of Varelle and Warren Hardy. Upon entering their one-storey red brick home, my eyes lit up to see almost every inch of the entry hallway filled with small artworks, collected and swapped by Varelle since her art studies. Abstract textured squares, delicate layered paper art, a recognisable colourful Natalie Sherring rabbit, even tiny little ceramic dresses complete with ribbon and bows. Varelle grew up in Newcastle, she and Warren living in a few different suburbs before moving to Hamilton in 2011. They have raised three children together and are proud grandparents to 12! Family has always played an important part in the lives of the Hardys as have friends and the community. Varelle said her favourite thing to do now is to catch up with friends, especially her art friends. In 1987, Varelle started a four year part-time night course at the University of Newcastle while working during the day as a Special Education teacher, by 2001 she had studied her way to a Master of Fine Art majoring in ceramics. Now, Varelle exhibits and sells her artwork regularly. She recently participated in the major group exhibition STITCHED UP held this year in The Lock Up art space curated by Newcastle artists Anne Kempton and Wilma Simmons. This exhibition received

Varelle Hardy at home amongst her collection of small artworks international coverage and told the stories of the young girls who boarded in the Newcastle Industrial School during 18671871. Varelle’s work for this exhibition explored her personal interest in the symbolic nature of dresses to represent a person’s story. Varelle is currently working on two new artworks for the group exhibition held annually by Newcastle Creative Embroiderers

and Textile Artists (NCEATA). The exhibition will showcase works inspired by nature. Varelle plans to use ink dyes, hand stitching, overlay fabrics and recycle dollies to create her artworks that will be based on plants. Look out for this exhibition in January 2018 at Timeless Textiles Gallery, Newcastle East. Need more sleep? You must be dreaming
It seems we are never satisfied with the amount of sleep we get. We either don’t get enough and wake up tired, or we get too much and wake up feeling sluggish. Just how much sleep we need is subject to debate but the National Sleep Foundation has explored how many hours of sleep your body needs at different ages. Interestingly, sleep needs vary across ages and are especially affected by your lifestyle and your general health. This means there is no easy answer to how much sleep you may need and to determine the right amount it’s important to assess not only
where you fall on the “sleep needs spectrum,” but also to examine what lifestyle factors are affecting the quality and quantity of your sleep such as work schedules and stress. To get the sleep you need, you must look at the big picture. Research has found that in general, newborns need 12-18 hours of sleep a day, infants 14-15 hours, toddlers 12-14 hours, preschoolers 11-13 hours, school-age children 10-11 hours, teens 8.5-9.25 hours, and adults 7-9 hours. Healthy adults have a basal sleep need of seven to eight hours every night, but where things get complicated is the interaction between the basal need and sleep debt. For instance, you might meet your basal sleep need on any single night or a few nights in a row, but still have an unresolved sleep debt that may make you feel more sleepy and less alert at times, particularly in conjunction with circadian dips, those times in the 24-hour cycle when we are biologically programmed to be more sleepy and less alert, such as overnight hours and mid-afternoon. You may feel overwhelmingly sleepy quite suddenly at these times, shortly before bedtime or feel sleepy upon awakening. The good news is that some research suggests that the accumulated sleep debt can be worked down or “paid off”However, if you feel you have a sleep disorder you should seek professional help, and your local pharmacy or GP is a great place to start. Probate is the process of proving a will is valid and afterwards administering the estate of a person who has died according to the terms of their will. In NSW an application for probate is made to the NSW Supreme Court. The Court requires a range of documents to be prepared in specific ways in order for it to approve a will as valid. Once the Supreme Court makes an order, called a grant of probate, there is a legal process to follow. A grant gives the executor named in the will the authority to “call in’’ the assets, pay the estate’s debts and distribute the remainder in accordance with the will. You might not need a grant of probate if a person died either without owning any property, or owned property jointly or had only a small amount of money to his or her name. What is an executor responsible for? • finding the will; • arranging for the funeral and burial or cremation; • obtaining the death certificate; • ascertaining the deceased’s assets and liabilities; • assessing the value of the deceased’s assets; • obtaining probate if required; • paying the deceased’s debts, income tax, duties and funeral expenses; • distributing the assets according to the terms of the will. A grant of probate can only be made if there is a will. However, often the family does not know whether the deceased left a will or where it can be found. If you cannot find a will in the deceased’s personal papers, check with their bank, solicitor or the NSW Public Trustee. The process of applying for a grant of probate can be complicated and time consuming. Although it is not necessary to appoint a solicitor most executors do not want to undertake such an onerous task on their own and therefore seek the assistance of a solicitor to help them through the process.
back pain can potentially affect not only your quality of life but your pregnancy experience. Your nervous system may also be impacted by less than optimal spine and pelvic function. As the master control system of the body, your nervous system is tasked with transmitting nerve impulses to direct cell function. It’s like the strings controlling a puppet, if you interfere with the strings, you interfere with the puppets function. To understand the impact of misalignments it is necessary to understand the role several key ligaments play in supporting the uterus. If your pelvis is biomechanically balanced during pregnancy, the uterus will be supported symmetrically. To restore any imbalances during pregnancy we use gentle adjustments to the spine and pelvis utalising specialised tables and techniques. We also use supportive pillows to ensure comfort and safety at all times for both mum and bub. During your pregnancy I would encourage you to keep moving in whatever way you find works best for you. The activities you feel comfortable with will likely change as your body changes. Walking, pilates, yoga, stretching, aquarobics, jogging or cycling are all affective ways of supporting a healthy spine and pelvis through pregnancy.

Pregnancy
Pregnancy is one of the most exciting, rewarding and sometimes challenging times in a women’s life. The body will go through enormous physical and hormonal changes. Listening to your body and placing an emphasis on your own health and wellbeing will help your pregnancy be as healthy and enjoyable as possible. As your body is adapting to the postural and structural changes you may experience spinal and pelvic discomfort. Around 50% of women will experience back pain during their pregnancy with up to 75% reporting low back pain during labor. Low
