Gridlock at hospital for 10 more years, MP warns State Member for Wallsend, Ms Sonia Hornery MP, has warned motorists that traffic gridlock will remain around John Hunter Hospital for a number years to come. Ms Hornery met with officials from the Roads and Maritime Service (RMS) in mid-May to discuss a number of issues across the electorate, including Stage 5 of the Newcastle Inner City Bypass which will link Rankin Park and Jesmond with a four-lane 3.4km stretch of road. RMS officials have ruled out constructing a full interchange at the western boundary of John Hunter (continued page 2)

(from page 1) Hospital and opted instead for a half interchange. This means vehicles entering or leaving the hospital precinct from or to the south will continue to use the Lookout Rd intersection. It was also confirmed that construction of the final, ‘missing link’ of the Bypass is unlikely to commence for another three to four years. Following her meeting Ms Hornery pointed to deficiencies in the RMS plan as she sees them. “It is obvious following my meeting with the RMS that there is going to be a lot of pain for motorists for years to come. “Construction of Stage 5 is at least three years away and there are no plans to ease congestion in the short term. “What is concerning is that RMS doesn’t think that the complete interchange is needed for another ten years. But the road is not due to start construction for another three or four years and will take another two years to construct. “By the time the road is built, the complete interchange at the Hospital will almost be needed according to the very modelling used by the RMS.” Ms Hornery said.

Heart first-aid on hand at physio clinic Regent Street Physiotherapy at New Lambton has recently purchased a defibrillator or AED (automated external defibrillator). A defribillator is a machine that uses an electric current to stop dangerous and irregular heart rhythms. The machines have proven to contribute to successful long-term outcomes in first-aid situations. Now if a patient, staff member or even a passerby should suffer a heart attack the clinic can make this state-of-the-art first aid equipment available. Craig Boettcher of Regent Street Physiotherapy told Lambton & New Lambton Local of why his business had made the purchase. “As health professionals we keep our resuscitation qualifications up to date. This includes training in the use of AEDs.

Mel Green of Regent Street Physiotherapy with the Defibrillator or AED “We realised the potential benefits of being able to provide the highest standard of first aid available, not only for our customers and staff but for the wider local community” The machine is fully automatic and recommended for general community use as it provides

instructive voice prompts that guide a first responder through the process of providing first-aid. The AED is available during Regent Street Physiotherapy’s normal operating hours of Monday to Saturday.

A little murder in De Vitre Street Newcastle Theatre Company’s (NTC) 2017 Season continues in June with the zany comedy A Little Murder Never Hurt Anybody. The story begins on New Year’s Eve at the Perry mansion. Julia and Matthew seem to have it all, but Matthew wants something more - to be rid of his wife Julia so he can have some real fun. And so the fun begins - a hilarious match of wits and the witless. Throw in the Perry’s dim-witted daughter, Bunny and her unwitting fiance Donald, who are trying to plan a wedding in amongst the body count, a clueless detective and the everpresent butler and chaos is bound to ensue. Is Matthew the culprit or is there a more sinister plot behind the scenes? Did the butler actually do it? Is Bunny as dim as she seems? All questions will be answered in A Little Murder Never Hurt Anybody. The season opens on Saturday 3rd June and continues Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm until 17th June. There are matinee performances at 2pm on Sunday 4th and Saturday 10th June. Tickets are available online at newcastletheatrecompany.com. au or from the NTC box office at 90 DeVitre Street Lambton.

Dear Lambton & New Lambton Local

Original roos were not bronze at all it seems

I was so pleased to see the new kangaroos atop the Lambton Park Memorial Gates recently. I noticed that there was some suggestion that the original statues had been melted down as part of the Second World War effort. I did a bit of digging and found that although the original statues were intended to be bronze (reference: page 7 Newcastle Herald and Miners’ Advocate, 21/10/1918), they ended up being made of “imitation stone”, as evidenced by a report on vandalism of the statues (reference: The Newcastle Sun, 17/5/1921 page 5, at right) I suspect that a combination of weathering and vandalism resulted in the statues deteriorating to the point of embarrassment, and they were then quietly removed. So it is a fabulous and fitting achievement that new bronze statues have been erected, just as the original instigators of the memorial intended. Thanks

Lunch raises $6k for good causes

More than 70 women attended the 2nd annual ‘Lunch for Humanity’ held recently in the Chaddie’s courtyard in Regent Street New Lambton. Many local businesses including Dalton Partners, The Duke of Wellington and Lake Group Strata showed their support by donating cash, goods and services to some great causes. Organisers of the event Karina Lusis of The Wandering Peacock and Lisa Macklin of Dalton Partners were very pleased with the result. “Last year’s inaugural event raised $3400 for charity. This year we raised $6006!” Karina told Lambton & New Lambton Local. $2500 of that total will be donated to ‘Hair Aid’. Natalie from Chameleon Hair in New Lambton will go to Bali to help teach local

Dear Lambton & New Lambton Local

Anyone know of Peter Pizer Pharmacist? Can anyone help me with a photo of Lambton Medical Hall or further information on Peter Pizer and his wife. I have thrown down this challenge elsewhere on Facebook and people kindly have provided some information, but would love to find out more and particularly get a photograph of his shop, which I am told was a single story sandstone building. His business was where the older Greater Bank building is and was carried on by his wife after he died. From Trove, I know he was in the local fire brigade and they used to meet at his tank. Please if you have any knowledge or photos, be kind enough to share.

That was then, this is now Arthur Lydney Payne

Arthur Lydney Payne was one of Lambton and New Lambton’s most prominent citizens. This month marks 100 years since his death on 15th June 1917. A L Payne was born at Lydney Park, a property in the Millers Forest area, around 1850. In the 1860s his family moved to Waratah, where the teenage Arthur was employed by the butcher, D. McMichael. Arthur’s skill and reliability were so evident that he was soon appointed to the management of the business. In 1870, at just 20 years of age, Arthur Payne purchased a butchering business in Regent St New Lambton, and later that year opened another shop in Elder St Lambton. Thus began a family business that maintained a continuous association with the area until 1993. A L Payne’s efforts were not only directed towards commerce. He served as an alderman on Lambton Council for 19 years, and was four times elected Mayor. He also became renowned for his expertise in herbal medicines, and “patients came to him for advice from all parts of Australia.”

by Lachlan Wetherall

One of the enduring legacies of Arthur Payne to our district is Le Chalet, the elegant house he had built in Elder St Lambton in the early 1900s. In 1911, at the rear of this property, Arthur Payne erected stables and a buggy house, as he was an avid horseman. He maintained a lifelong interest in the sport of show jumping, and won a number of competitions across NSW with horses he had personally trained. Even a month before his death at age 67 he was active, purchasing a “well-known jumper and show horse” from the Maitland horse markets. After a short illness, A L Payne died at his residence in Elder St Lambton in June 1915. His funeral cortege, travelling from Lambton to Sandgate cemetery was reported as “one of the largest that ever left Lambton”, the size of the gathering being “a fine tribute of respect and esteem in which the deceased gentleman was held.” You can view these photos and more details at www. lachlanwetherall.com

Although not the original buildings, A L Payne’s former butcher shops in Elder Street Lambton (above left) and Regent Street New Lambton (above right) operate as butcheries to this day and still display his name, and the year his business was first established in the area.

War declared on food costs A not for profit organisation helping people on a Government Benefit Card reduce their weekly grocery costs has set up shop in Newcastle.

The Food War provides low cost dry groceries, frozen foods, fresh fruit and vegetables, personal care and laundry items as well as free bread daily from its newly leased shop at Hassall Street Hamilton South. Founder Elsie Cooper told Lambton & New Lambton Local recently that “The idea of Food War was to make it a little easier for people on a limited income to make ends meet.” “It’s pretty clear that for those on Government Benefits, incomes have not kept pace with the cost of living in recent years. We’re just doing what we can to bridge that gap.” Elsie said. Food War relies entirely on donated goods and volunteer labour receiving no funding from government, churches or other institutions. Hamilton is the fourth Food War outlet, joining Beresfield, Cessnock and Raymond Terrace stores

Pim was drawn to food from the time she could reach the kitchen counter and was tutored in cooking at her mother’s side. Her family has been in the restaurant business for generations. They currently own six award winning restaurants in Thailand and one in England. Pim owned her first restaurant at the age of 19 and owned two thriving eateries before handing them over to her family in Thailand to manage when she immigrated to Australia more 15 year ago. Pim prides herself on achieving the authentic tastes of Thailand using recipes which have been closely guarded family secrets for generations. PHARMACY

Matters by Brett Plumb Pharmacist at Piggott’s Pharmacy Lambton

Eye Care

Our eyes, the ‘window to the soul’, are one of the body’s most important assets. Maintaining good eye health should be a priority for all. During July, The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) Eye Foundation runs its JulEYE campaign. JulEYE aims to raise community awareness of eye health issues, as well as funds for research projects into the causes and cures of vision impairment and blindness. The campaign also supports international development projects whose goals are aligned with those of the Eye Foundation.

Doctors, pharmacists and optometrists can help find the cause of red eyes or dry eyes and advise on treatment. PROPERTY

Matters with Lisa Macklin of Dalton Partners Real Estate, New Lambton

What if your property became vacant today? If a rental property you owned became vacant today what rent would it realise? Tenants are better informed today than ever before and are aware of the going rate for certain types

of property in certain locations. This information is readily available to them simply by navigating various internet sites available. In our experience, properties for which investors increase the rent to above market levels have higher vacancy rates than those for which rents are maintained at or slightly below market levels. Increasing the rent to above market levels is therefore false economy as it results in a higher turnover of tenants, high vacancy rates and lost income. By increasing rents to slightly below market rent, your tenant is aware that they are not being “rent gouged” and are therefore more likely to remain in the property. This ensures full occupancy for you and a continuing income stream. At the end of the day our job is to maximise the income for your investment property. We achieve this by not only increasing rents but also ensuring that you have a steady income stream and lower vacancy rates. Maintaining rents at or slightly below market level achieves both objectives.

Once your HCV genotype and level of liver fibrosis is known, your GP can determine whether you can be treated through your local surgery or specialist referral is required. Either way, the standard course for the DAAs is for 12 weeks (1-4 tabs/day depending on the particular medication). Generally blood tests will be required before treatment, after 4 weeks of treatment, at the end of treatment and 12 weeks after treatment. Self-Kindness

What does this mean to you? Do you show yourself the same level of compassion, love and care you show to your family, friends or voluntary community organisation where you may donate your time and energy? Do you even give yourself a second thought? Research has shown that if we can be kinder to ourselves then we tend to look after ourselves better. We will do things that will help us look after ourselves better rather than punish ourselves or set ourselves targets that are impossible to achieve.

Don’t know where to begin? One of the ways you can support yourself is turn off social media for at least a day per week. It’s very easy to get caught in comparing yourself to others and before you realise, the green-eyed monster has started to creep into your thinking. This can also make you feel stressed. Try having a tech-free day. When we are being distracted by smart phones, tablets and computers we’re having our attention drawn away from our family, friends and the here and now. Switch off your phone, television, computer and potter around outside in your garden or local park. Perhaps invite a friend over for a cuppa. Talk to your family or friends, do a yoga class or perhaps learn how to meditate. At the end of the day, spend a minute or two taking note of how calm and unrushed you have felt by simply turning off your mobile device for a short period of time. Set yourself a goal of one day a week of turning off your devices. It may feel uncomfortable at first, but I assure you that you will feel calmer and less stressed. Why not encourage your family to join you in having a one-day a week techno free day and do a yoga class together? You will reap the benefits.

Making the dream purchase a reality

We all know the feeling – there’s a major purchase we want to make, but we’re worried it will break the bank. Whether it’s a luxury car or a hard-earned holiday, that extra expense seems just out of reach.

be worth considering a loan or some other form of financing. If you’re a homeowner, another financing option might be to unlock the equity in your home. Equity is the difference between the market value of your property and the amount you still owe on your home loan. This effectively allows you to borrow money against the value of your home, using your property as security. The best part is, you don’t necessarily have to use the money for home-related expenses, so you can choose what to spend it on. We can help you with budgeting and also assist with any lending needs you may have. GC Accountants can also help set up a manageable repayment plan so you don’t end up falling behind and getting stuck in a debt spiral. The good news is, there are plenty of alternatives to making an outright purchase upfront. And depending on what you’re in the market for, you might find a practical solution that won’t leave you strapped for cash. Here are some creative ways you may not have considered to pay for a big-ticket item. Piece by piece When you see something you love, it’s tempting to think you need it then and there. But if you’ve got a little patience – and the item isn’t a necessity – then a layby option is a great way to make payments more manageable. If you really don’t want to wait until you’ve paid off the full item, some suppliers offer ‘own now, pay later’ options. This allows you to take home the item immediately and then pay it off in regular instalments. In this case, you may be charged interest over time, so it’s always a good idea to shop around first to get the best deal – you might even find a company that offers 0% interest for the first six or 12 months. Borrowing to buy For a major purchase that’s essential to your daily life – such as a family car or home repairs – it might

ID verification when dealing with the NSW Land Titles Office

Why do I have to verify who I am? In July 2016 the NSW Land Titles Office introduced a stringent “Verification of Identity” process in an attempt to reduce the risk of fraud in land transactions. If you will be involved in any type of land transaction, such as buying, selling, leasing, or even receiving property as a beneficiary of a deceased estate, then you will need to provide evidence ofyour identity. Who can verify my identity? During your transaction, a verification of your identity can be carried out in a face-to- face interview with your Solicitor or Conveyancer. If you are unable to attend their office in person then, for a fee, a

verification can be carried out by a third party, such as Australia Post. A verification cannot be carried out by a Real Estate Agent. What documents are acceptable? There are several combinations of documents which are acceptable, but all documents must be original. Acceptable documents include Passport, Drivers Licence or Photo Card issued by Road & Maritime Services, full Birth Certificate (an extract is not acceptable), Medicare or Centrelink or Department of Veterans Affairs Cards. If your name has changed, you will also need to produce your Marriage Certificate or Change of Name Certificate issued by NSW Registry of Births, Deaths & Marriages. Your Solicitor or Conveyancer can give you advice on which documents you will require. If you are contemplating a land transaction, be proactive and have your original documents ready. This could avoid the inconvenience of a delay in your settlement if you have to obtain new documents. Be prepared ! Whilst it might seem like more red tape, it is for your protection. If it prevents you being a victim of fraud then it is well worth your time and effort. Anxious Modes of Thinking (continued)

As we take a look at the various modes of thinking that anxious people frequently get stuck in, there is perhaps none other more common and more problematic than ‘What if thinking’. What if this happens, what if that happens, what if I go to the party and no-one talks to me, what if I try to get the promotion and I don’t pass the exam? What if? What if? Let’s look at this insidious type of thought. First,

Duayne Cook Your Local Electrician

ANYTHING ELECTRICAL! Safe, friendly, tidy and on time

‘what if thinking’ is always negative. Have you noticed that we don’t ‘what if’ positive stuff? We never think, ‘what if I attend the meeting and have a really great time’? We always just ‘what if’ the negative stuff. Secondly, ‘what if thinking’ is always time oriented to the future, not the present or the past. Thus, it predicts the future negatively. ‘What if’ this bad thing goes wrong ‘down the track’? The thing to notice about ‘what if thinking’ is that the disaster referred to off in the future doesn’t actually exist. It’s all fantasised. Negative fantasising to be sure, but fantasy nonetheless. Now, fantasy is not something we can take and engage or do something with. We can only do that with reality. We have to understand that ‘what if thinking’ is not referring to something that is actually real. One therapist used to bring this home to his clients using the opposite ‘what if’ thought to his clients. “What if I fail the test”? “What if you don’t”? But what if I do”? “But what if you don’t”? This would go on until the client realised that both are not real, that both are fantasy. It is only reality that I can take hold of and do something with. Don’t let ‘what if thinking’ steal away your abilities to live life to the fullest. Stuart Edser - Counselling Psychologist

Choosing the right diet for you

As a society, we are becoming unhealthier which leads to health problems and a decreased quality of life. Something is really going wrong here. With a lot of ‘experts’ out there telling us we need to cut out entire food groups as well as all the shake diets and meal plans to choose from no wonder people are confused. Some simple tips to remember when choosing a diet: If it is too good to be true it is There are a lot of products that help with weight loss but as soon as you go off them you gain the weight back on. Remember these companies are in it to make money so they want to create a dependence on their product so you keep buying it. If it is not real food than it is not good for you A good rule of thumb is if you can’t understand what the ingredients on the product label are then it isn’t real food and probably not great for you. Focus on health, not just weight loss I am a big believer in being healthy and not just losing weight. There are many products out there that will help you lose weight but can be detrimental to your long-term health.

Know who to turn to for advice Talk to a dietitian about a personalised meal program. These people are qualified to be able to do so. Especially if you have medical conditions that can be affected by your diet it is essential to see the right professional for advice. Make sure whatever method you choose that it’s not going to do more harm than good. Talk to the right experts after all this is your long-term health which is most valuable and should never be taken for granted. VET Chat by Dr Fiona Wallace of New Lambton Veterinary Clinic

The many benefits of keeping chickens in your backyard I grew up with a close bond to our family chooks, and I have been delighted that recently we have been seeing increasing numbers of local people with a chook or two in their back yards. It is widely argued that the humble chook contributes strongly to world food security and is the key to the end of world hunger

in areas of the world that have limited resources, as chooks have a low environmental impact, they help with nutrient recycling, and they empower women in these areas. For these reasons we think that chooks are pretty special, and increasingly veterinary focus both in private practice and in a broad government setting has been on these unique birds. It is really quite easy to keep chooks as long as you have the right equipment and know what to expect. Chooks definitely contribute a sense of purpose and calm in the back yard as they roam around chatting quietly together about the best foraging spots, cackle with glee after laying an egg, and keep to a strict timetable with regard to bedtime and wake up time. Anyone who has kept chooks is in no doubt about the meaning of the term “pecking order”! - and interestingly the other family pets including the cat and the dog are usually if not at the bottom, certainly held at a peaceful distance! There is the joy of the taste of really fresh free range eggs, as well as being the owner of mobile compact little garbage disposal unit/fertilising machines - what’s not to love?? There are local council guidelines with regard to the keeping of chickens, and it is worth making a quick phone call to the Council before you set up your first coop. Suitable chicken coops can be purchased on line or from local produce stores, but as long as the chooks have shelter from the wind, rain and hot sun, with an elevated perch to roost on and enough nesting boxes to go around, it is easy enough to build your own. Bedding is available as straw from the produce store and needs to be changed regularly. It is a good idea to count your flock and lock them up at night to make sure everyone is safe and well and in case of predators such as foxes or even urban cats. A constant supply of fresh water is of course essential, as well as daily feeds of chicken pellets and household fruit and vege scraps. Shell grit, available from the produce shops, is a necessary source of calcium to keep eggshells strong. A word of warning – if you happen to own a bee hive it will need to be fenced off from the chooks as they are inclined to forage on the dead bees that surround the hive, which puts them at risk of bee retribution (potentially fatal).

Treating vertigo with Chinese medicine

20-30 percent of the general population, with the majority of the sufferers being older women. Modern medicine identifies two types of vertigo: Peripheral or Central vertigo depending on the location where the dysfunction is taking place. Peripheral vertigo is linked to problems of the inner ear while Central vertigo is associated with issues stemming from the balance centres of the brain. Like modern medicine, Chinese Medicine identifies multiple causes of vertigo, and clinically we often see patients dealing with more than one cause at a time. The most common cause that we see in our practice is lifestyle related, referring to people with a poor diet and eating habits, combined with sustained periods of high stress. These patients usually have a medical diagnosis from their doctor of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), Ménière’s disease or vestibular neuritis. Although vertigo can be very complex and sometimes a debilitating condition, it does respond very well to a combined approach of Acupuncture and pharmaceutical grade Chinese Herbal Medicines. While chronic conditions may take a more sustained treatment approach, patients typically begin feeling improvement within the first 2-3 treatments.

Vertigo is a condition where an individual often experiences a loss of balance, spinning sensation or a feeling that the world is swaying or moving around them when it is not. Other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and ringing in the ears may also be experienced. Patients will report aggravation of their vertigo with different body positions, such as: walking, going from sitting to standing, lying in bed or when moving their head. TRAVEL Matters by Ian and Sue Roberts

of Memorable Destination www.memorabledestination.com

An ace of a hint for long flights

Here’s an interesting tip: travellers are being urged to take a tennis ball on long-haul flights – even if they’re not planning on playing a match at their destination. We’re yet to try it, but a report out of the UK says running the tennis ball over your skin while flying will help keep blood flowing to the heart. There’s no denying that long flights can often cause your feet to swell; muscles to tighten and the body to generally feel bloated and gassy.

Sitting motionless for long periods may also increase the risk of deep vein thrombosis, a blood clot in the muscles, And that’s apparently where a tennis ball comes in handy. The UK report suggests that the ball be rolled over areas of the body that become uncomfortable. Think about the soles of your feet, the small of the back, the ankles, legs and arms. By pressing down slightly and moving the ball, you can help increase circulation and soften knots and tight areas. It all sounds feasible - and we’ll certainly give it a try. We’ve long been believers in massaging our lower legs during long haul flights - stroking the muscles upwards from the ankles to help boost blood flow. It’s also important to keep moving your legs, even when waiting in the airport terminal - and we wear compression stockings to put gentle pressure on leg muscles. For additional travel tips and information, follow Ian and Sue Roberts online at www. memorabledestination.com

Little Locals......JUNIORS in SPORT

Each month we will feature a local junior sports team in this new section called Little Locals. To kick things off we have the Lambton Jaffas Under 6-1 side. The team played Adamstown Rosebud at Harry Edwards 4 (Lambton Park) recently. It was a evenly balanced match with a strong defensive effort from each side. Both the home and away sides had their opportunities to score in the first half but on each occasion the shot was either repelled or just off target. At half-time scores were locked at 0-0. It was not until deep into the second half that a flurry of shots on target came from the Jaffas to separate the sides. Congratulations to both sides on an entertaining game of football played with enthusiasm and sportsmanship. Photos (clockwise from top of page) Brisan takes on the midfield; Spencer works the ball around the defense; Jack, Brisan and Nate defend their goal; Riley heads up field; Benji takes a goal line kick.
