Ben’s Caps for Cancer Ben Allen was symptom free when a golf ball-sized lump was detected in his chest through an unrelated x-ray in December. The nine year old was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive soft tissue cancer known as epithelioid sarcoma. As Ben’s chemotherapy began, his mum Claire of New Lambton knew he may be worried about the hair loss it would entail. “Family and friends had asked what they could do to help so I suggested we could present Ben with a new cap each day during his treatment” Ms Allen said. People shared this simple request, who then shared it with their friends. Before too long Ben had built a collection of well over 500 caps, many of them signed by local and international sports stars. “Hardly a day passes without more caps arriving. It’s been a tangible reminder of how big a team of

supporters Ben has behind him for his recovery” Ms Allen said. To see Ben’s evergrowing cap collection search ‘Ben’s Caps for Cancer’ on Facebook. You can also donate there to Hunter New England Kids Health.

Memorial gates at former RSL preserved As you drive along Lambton Rd New Lambton you cannot help but notice the adaptive reuse of what was previously the Lambton-New Lambton RSL Bowling Club site. The bowling green area is now occupied by six two-storey villa units, whilst the former clubhouse has been rebuilt in large part and refitted as an early education centre. A condition of the sale of the RSL Club site was that the war memorial gates at the front of the property, which are on the Register of War Memorials in NSW, were to be preserved and maintained. Lambton-New Lambton RSL Sub Branch vice president Grahame Hall told Lambton & New Lambton Local recently that the Sub Branch was “Really pleased with how the developer and

(L to R) Grahame Hall, vice president of the RSL Sub Branch, Shari Oldham, centre manager of Go Kindy New Lambton and Aaron Mosely, construction manager for Mavid Group at the memorial gate builder have incorporated the gates into the design of the childcare centre. It’s a very important part of continuing to

honour the sacrifice made by so many local men and women who served in the World Wars” Mr Hall said.

University study seeks volunteers Can diabetes be prevented without weight loss?

Could omega-3 fatty acids help to prevent type 2 diabetes even without weight loss? That’s what researchers at the University of Newcastle would like to find out. The number of people in Australia developing type 2 diabetes is growing, despite the fact that up to 60% of cases are preventable. One of the risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes is being overweight or obese – with 63% of Australians falling in this category, most people are at some risk of

developing the disease. However not everyone who is obese will develop type 2 diabetes, and this is what Ms Kylie Abbott’s PhD is investigating. “Insulin is needed to turn the glucose in our blood into energy. Insulin resistance occurs when our cells can’t respond properly to insulin, and is a precursor to developing type 2 diabetes” says Ms Abbott. “We know that one of the links between obesity and insulin resistance is inflammation in our fat cells. The omega-3 fatty acids have really powerful anti-inflammatory actions in the body, including in our fat cells. Removing this inflammation could help the cell respond better to insulin, reducing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes”. This research builds on the team’s previous discovery, where overweight/obese Australians with a higher “Omega-3 Index” – a measure of omega-3 status – had

the lowest prevalence of type 2 diabetes. “Now we would like to find out whether improving someone’s Omega-3 Index improves their body’s response to insulin. This can be measured using a simple fasting blood test”. Ms Abbott is currently looking for 80 non-diabetic, overweight or obese volunteers, to participate in a clinical trial. Volunteers will be asked to take 2 capsules each day for 12 weeks, which contain either fish or corn oil, and donate a small blood sample at the start and the end of the trial. You might be eligible to participate if you are aged between 18-70, with a BMI between 25-45kg/m2 and a waist circumference is above 88cm (for females) or 102cm (for males), and you don’t normally eat a lot of oily fish (< 2 serves each week). If you are interested in learning more about the study, please contact Ms Abbott on 4921 5638, or by emailing kylie.abbott@uon.edu.au

Katrina helps hundreds to hear Katrina Skirka from ihear Hearing Clinic in New Lambton, travelled to Vietnam recently, to help treat more than 1,600 locals in desperate need of better hearing health. Katrina was part of a multi-skilled Starkey Hearing Foundation (SHF) team, made up of clinicians and volunteers from the AustraliaPacific region. Arriving in Hanoi was a huge culture shock compared to life in Australia for Katrina. She marvelled at the sights as the group travelled to their first mission destination. “I drunk the sights in! There were whole families with small children travelling on the one motorbike, smartly-dressed women in high heels and skirts on bikes, a florist shop on a bike and many more sights. The only road rule it seemed was to honk when approaching.” Katrina told Lambton & New Lambton Local. At the first mission site, Hanoi’s An Viet Hospital, the team began setting up and training their volunteers. Katrina and a fellow audiologist, Michael, screened people with otoscopes as they came in, noting what they saw in code form by marking patients’ hands with Texta. “I attended to a 100-year-old frail lady, half my size, suffering massive eardrum perforations. We sat her on the ground floor, as the stairs were impractical for her.” The team took ear impression for 337 patients in the tiny Hanoi hospital on the first day. “I was impressed by the calm, brave, trusting, and accepting nature of the Vietnamese,” Katrina said. For many of these patients, it was the first time they had ever sought treatment.

Audiologist Katrina Skirka attends to a young patient in Vietnam “I saw it on the faces of the wideeyed little children who wandered silently into the clinic room alone to have their impressions taken. Little children of primary school age with no speech. I saw it on the faces of the adults in pain, with no eardrums. I saw it in the well-behaved, silent wall-to-wall crowds waiting patiently without complaint for often long periods for our services.” From Hanoi it was on to Danang’s ‘Village of Hope’. Whilst setting up there a very frail elderly lady wandered in, a day early, hoping to be seen. “She opened her mouth and there looked to be blood oozing from it, but she was just chewing betel nut! This lady received individual service from about ten of our staff, who were just fascinated by her story!” On the last mission day in Ho Chi Minh City, the team saw nearly

Page 14 > Lambton & New Lambton Local > April 2017

600 patients, mostly children, and literally exhausted their supplies of impression material due to the demand. “These peaceful people were so grateful to be helped. It was our privilege and honour to be the people helping them.” “We came to do a job and we are here to serve these people, so we happily put their needs above our own. The Vietnamese have taught me the importance of kindness, generosity, not sweating the small stuff, and to be grateful for the privileged lives we lead. It would be my privilege to return someday to these wonderful people.” Katrina looks forward now to Phase Two of the SHF mission, where the team will see the same patients again, this time to fit them with free hearing aids, allowing them to develop speech and improve their education.

That was then, this is now

History under our feet

The growth of our city means that former collieries are eventually obliterated by urban development, and it becomes difficult to find any trace of their former existence. Sometimes however, evidence of the old mines can be found, quite literally, under our feet. Last year I was walking over Lewis Oval in New Lambton at dusk, when I noticed a slight dip in the level of the ground. I wondered, could this possibly be due to subsidence related to the former Lambton colliery? A September 1944 aerial photograph held by Newcastle Library shows that the mine was located at this site. The mine closed in 1936 and much of the surface infrastructure was removed by 1944. The large double storey building in the centre of the photograph housed the colliery’s machinery workshop on the lower floor, and a sawmilling plant on the upper floor. The building got a new lease of life in 1947 when Leonora Glass Industries began operations there.

by Lachlan Wetherall

The railway also continued to be used after the mine’s closure, as noted in a 1942 newspaper article, “Coal was being hauled by motor-trucks from Cardiff for loading onto the coal waggons near the site of the old colliery screens.” Carting of coal from the site ceased in 1963, the area was developed for housing, and Lewis Oval constructed over the filled in railway cutting. Sixty years on, a slight subsidence of the railway in-fill causes water to collect in the depression. In the right conditions, the grass grows slightly greener, and in some of the modern Google Earth photos, the position of the old railway can still be discerned in a green horizontal line just north of the cricket pitch. So if ever you find yourself defending the boundary at Lewis Oval, and you notice the outfield seems a little bumpy, you might just be experiencing an enduring impression of our coal mining history. PROPERTY

Matters with Lisa Macklin of Dalton Partners Real Estate, New Lambton

Simple tips can improve your home’s value Before selling, there are a number of quick fixed to help you maximise the appeal (and selling price!) of your residence. Some of these tips are more costly than others. But all of them help to create a great first impression and maximise your return. De-clutter : Make your property appear light, spacious and welcoming by decluttering throughout. This means removing or minimising knick-knacks, ornaments, photos and even furniture – freeing up space for buyers to imagine their life in your home.

Clean slate: A sparkling clean home indicates that a property is loved and valued. Less-than- fresh bathrooms, kitchens and floors create an on-the-nose impression that is hard to shift, so ensure that your whole residence is spick –n-span. Garden makeover: A neat garden creates a good impression, particularly ins spring. Mow lawns, weed and mulch carefully before planting your garden beds with colourful flowers. Remove any weeds and dead plants. Time poor? Call in the gardeners! Fresh paint: Nothing says fresh and new like a coat of paint. Think neutral colour palettes to suit all potential purchasers. Bring in painters, or DIY with care. Styling and home staging: In today’s competitive market, many sellers are choosing professional property staging to assist in achieving a successful sale. Properties need to present beautifully in print, online and in person in order to achieve the best price in the shortest possible time. PHARMACY

Matters by Anthony Piggott of Piggotts Pharmacies Blackbutt & Lambton

Coughs and colds very common The recent cold snap may have you thinking about winter, and coughs and colds that often accompany the change in seasons. Coughs and colds are very common. Each year, adults can develop between two and four colds and children between five and ten. With our increasingly busy lives, we are often seeking a treatment for coughs and colds and the first stop is usually the pharmacy.

Cough treatments will not cure a cough; but they may help relieve the cough symptoms. Treatment depends on the symptoms and the type of cough. If you have a dry, non-productive cough, a treatment that sooths the throat and/or suppresses (stops) the cough may help. If the cough is chesty and productive, a cough treatment that will help break up the mucus making it easier to cough may provide relief. A cough medicine that suppresses a cough is not suitable for a chesty cough. Colds are caused by viruses. There are no medicines that can cure a cold. Some medicines such as cough suppressants, expectorants and mucolytics, antihistamines, pain relievers and decongestants may ease the symptoms of colds and flu. Antibiotics do not work against viral infections and so are not useful for treating colds. You can get more detailed information on coughs and colds from the Self Care Fact Cards titled Coughs and Colds and flu, available from pharmacies providing the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia’s Self Care health information, or ask Piggotts!

MONEY

Help your kids avoid to debt spiral

If you’re a parent concerned about the spending habits of your son or daughter, you’re not alone. Here are some simple suggestions to help your loved ones take back control and stay out of debt. When you’re young and living life to the full, it can be tempting to see your credit card as a bottomless well of money. And faced with higher living costs than previous generations – not to mention the lure of online shopping – many young people find themselves spending beyond their means on a regular basis. Here are some top tips for the millennials in your life so they can avoid the debt spiral. Tip 1. Spend wisely. It may sound obvious, but the easiest way to stay out of debt is to avoid spending beyond your means in the first place. For many people, the biggest threat is the impulse purchases they make on their credit cards. Tip 2. Make a repayment plan. The more credit cards your kids have, the more they could end up paying in fees and interest. Instead, they might be better off consolidating their debts onto a single low-interest card so it’s easier to focus on paying it off Tip 3. Draw up a budget. Young people (or anyone, really) can also avoid a debt spiral if they look closely at their regular income and expenses then make a realistic budget they can stick to. By adding up their outgoing costs, including things like rent, bills and

student fees, they’ll know exactly how much they have left over each week or month to spend on themselves Tip 4. Put money aside. For some people, the slide into debt can begin when unexpected costs crop up – like car repairs or medical expenses. Even if your child is managing their finances okay on a day-to-day basis, they should also try to have enough money set aside to cope with an emergency Tip 5. Talk about money issues. It can be tough to get your kids to open up about their financial situation, but it’s even harder watching them slide further into debt. Remember, money matters are often highly personal, so it’s important to approach the debt topic with sensitivity. If your child is having trouble managing their money, the best thing you can do is help them find a solution. MIND

Matters by Dr Stuart Edser

Principal Psychologist at Newcastle Psychology & Health

Neuropsychotherapy In the vast field of Medicine, the second half of the twentieth century ushered in the era of the brain. The burgeoning discipline of neuroscience grew with the advent of new imaging techniques such as CT, PET and MRI scans. FMRI, or functional MRI, is the tool of the neuroscientist whereby an individual’s brain can be scanned while performing some task, enabling the researcher to view in real-time exactly which parts of the brain are being used and the networks involved. These extraordinary break-throughs have slowly made their way into the counselling room so that

today, appropriately trained psychologists can use the knowledge of neuroscience to assist them in the practice of counselling and psychotherapy. Key to this new knowledge is the phenomenon of neuroplasticity. This refers to the brain’s ability to change. When necessary, the human brain can bypass a certain area and create different neural networks. You will know for example that some stroke sufferers unable to walk, can, with much repetition, learn to walk again. Their brain effectively bypasses the dead cells and creates new pathways for the motor cortex to enable walking. The same process can happen with everyday problems and even with mental illness. A thorough understanding of the brain’s architecture as well as its biological and chemical mechanisms can give the clinician a good indication of exactly what is going on in a client’s brain causing them to feel stuck or trapped in an unhelpful pattern. The clinician can recognise different neural systems that are operating that keep the person unhappy, anxious, addicted or stressed. The client can be shown through these systems so that he or she can make changes and put strategies in place to foster wellness and health. Clinical neuropsychotherapy is the exciting next stage in the counselling journey. Stuart Edser

VET Chat by Dr Fiona Wallace of New Lambton Veterinary Clinic

Veterinary physiotherapy and adjunctive care Physiotherapy in veterinary care has long been a neglected issue and has not kept up with the huge advances we vets have made in recent years in veterinary orthopaedic procedures. At New Lambton Vets, not only have we secured the assistance one day a week of Dr Kathy Cornack of Newcastle Holistic Veterinary Services, but Liv and Carlie, our long time nurses, have recently attended a course in Canine Rehabilitation hosted by the group Dogs in Motion, aimed at the rehabilitation of patients after major orthopaedic surgery and also the care of geriatric patients. Dr Kathy works with laser and acupuncture as well as traditional physiotherapy procedures. She obtains a complete history of the patient including previous lifestyle, exercise and fitness and any other health issues. She factors in the home environment and also the owner’s ability to perform exercises and the time and budget available. The patient is assessed for pain level, areas of muscle wastage which indicate long term lack of use of a limb, swollen or inflamed areas, ranges of motion, strength and any lameness. Medications and nutriceuticals are reviewed before the treatments are commenced.

Daylight Saving ends Sunday 2nd April.... Clocks go back one hour at 3 am

Treatment modalities include thermal therapy (hot/cold), massage and stretching. Lifestyle and management modifications are often crucial to success. Laser therapy is a non-invasive procedure that uses light to stimulate cell regeneration and increase blood circulation. Dogs tolerate the laser treatment well, and we have seen some remarkable improvements in patients is just a few weeks. Laser therapy can treat acute and chronic injuries, sprains and strains, arthritis, swelling due to back disc problems, and muscular-skeletal abnormalities. It also helps to regenerate nerve tissue after surgery. Acupuncture is used to stimulate the release of the body’s own pain relieving and anti-inflammatory substances. It improves tissue blood flow, oxygenation, and removal of metabolic wastes and toxins. Visits for alternative therapy for your dog usually start weekly, but then drop back as required, usually to twice or three times a year for ongoing maintenance and support. If you think that your pet would benefit from some physio, laser or acupuncture please let us know.

LAW

Matters by Ronnie Wall of Wall Legal, New Lambton

What is Capacity?

We all make decisions for ourselves in our everyday lives, be it big decisions or small. Whilst there is no single legal meaning of mental capacity in NSW, generally, to have mental capacity means that we understand the information given to us, we weigh up that information when making a decision and we retain the information long enough to make the decision. It also means that we can clearly communicate our decisions to others. The law requires that we must have mental capacity when making certain decisions in our lives for those decisions to be considered valid. This includes when you are making a Will, giving consent for medical

or other treatment, or appointing a trusted person to become our decision maker when we can no longer do it for ourselves. We are often asked to assist a family when a loved one has an illness or injury. If this illness or injury causes their loved one to lose their capacity, meaning that they no longer understand information given to them, or they cannot understand or communicate their wishes, then unfortunately it is too late. A Solicitor must make a legal assessment of a person from whom they are taking instructions. This means that they assess the persons’ decision-making ability, not the decisions they make. For protection, we always recommend that a person have a valid Will, despite how little assets they may have. We also recommend an enduring Power of Attorney and enduring Guardianship. This means that should a person lose capacity in the future, their interests are protected as they have already appointed someone they trust to make decisions for them. Of course we hope these documents are put away safely and not required however, the true importance of them is highlighted during a family’s greatest time of need. Egg-cited for Easter

•Fit in some extra exercise Chocolate has a lot of calories so if you want to eat it you must work it off. •It is ok to indulge Being fit and healthy is not about denying yourself but about enjoying unhealthy foods in moderation especially on special occasions. These simple tips will help you have a regret free Easter. Remember to enjoy the company of family and friends instead of focusing on chocolate and you will have a healthier and happier Easter. So, until next month, Love life, dream big and become the inspiration Anne-Marie Adams

If you are trying to stay healthy over Easter it can be a challenge. I thought I would put together some simple tips that will help you stay on track. •Have a strategy Easter eggs get delivered to the shops to be put on display after Boxing Day. This leaves us with a few months of temptation before Easter is actually here. Avoid the aisles where the Easter Eggs are as much as possible and doing your grocery shopping on a full stomach always helps. •Buy Gifts See if people can buy you small gifts instead of giving you chocolate. For years, I have given my niece things like Easter colouring books, mugs, funky pens etc instead of giving her heaps of chocolate. These gifts you can buy at around the same price as the bigger Easter Egg packs and the person receiving it will get so much more joy out of it. •Eat wholegrain Easter buns These are a healthier alternative. Personally, I do not eat any Easter Buns except on Easter Sunday. This makes them much more enjoyable and special as I only eat them once a year.

GP

Chat by Dr Jeff Regnis

of Broadmeadow Medical Centre

Early preparation key prior to overseas travel

With all the the excitement of planning an overseas holiday or business trip it is easy to forget to seek early and appropriate travel medicine advice. Firstly it is important to have enough of your regular prescribed medications to last the duration of your trip. Your GP can organise a script to pick up multiple repeats prior to travel if required. Prescriptions written by your local doctor in Australia have no validity overseas. I would also recommended that you check that you regular immunisations are up-to-date, and it is

worthwhile considering Influenza vaccination prior to travel. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade also advises all persons travelling with prescribed medications to carry a signed letter from your doctor advising the dates and destination of travel, and the name and dosage of all medications you will taking with you. This is especially important if carrying injectables (Insulin etc). Carrying certain prescribed medications (Endone, Targin, Physeptone etc) to certain countries may be problematic and may require an exemption from the relevant Embassy. Many airlines unfortunately are now unwilling to carry medications which may need to be refrigerated, so you may need to purchase an appropriate cooler prior to travel. The Australian Government requires specific vaccinations if travelling to certain destinations. This includes Yellow Fever vaccination prior to visiting certain countries in Central Africa and South America. Certain recommended travel vaccinations (depending upon destination) also need some advance planning. Rabies vaccinations, for example require 3 vaccinations spaced over 21-28 days prior to departure, whilst certain anti-malarials also require starting the course three weeks prior to departure. Enjoy your trip!

Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is a frequently used term to describe pain in the sole of the foot, but what does plantar fasciitis really mean and what causes it? Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. It is brought on when the plantar fascia, a thick fibrous band that originates in the foot’s heel and travels the length of the sole to insert at the base of the toes, develops micro-tearing or becomes inflamed. This is often after being strained, stretched or directly injured. The plantar fascia is an integral component of the foot. It functions as an arch stabilizer, shock absorber and aids in properly distributing body weight along the foot when you are walking. Pain from plantar fasciitis usually develops gradually, with most individuals complaining of pain in the heel or medial (inner) arch of the foot that is worse with the first few steps of the day or after periods of inactivity. The pain will sometimes disappear with activity or when the foot is warmed up. Risk factors of plantar fasciitis: ●Flat footed or high arches: Both types of arches can put the plantar fascia under stretch and strain leading to micro-tearing or inflammation of the fascia. ●Occupation: Employment that requires walking or standing on hard floor surfaces for long periods can also put additional strain on the plantar fascia. ●Overweight: Carrying those extra kilos puts the plantar fascia under extra stretch and strain. ●Activity: Plantar fasciitis can be considered an overuse injury in athletic types when the constant activity puts extra strain on the plantar fascia and structures of the foot. Example: Runners and ballet dancers. The good news with plantar fasciitis is that it typically responds very well to a course of Acupuncture treatment!
