“This has resulted in a considerable decline in the number of customers choosing to use our branch at Lambton. With this in mind and after careful consideration, our Lambton branch’s last day of trade will be Friday, 16 March.

“There are seven branches within a short distance and Newcastle Permanent has the largest owned ATM and branch network in the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie area.

“We will be retaining our ATM at Lambton and are looking forward to continuing to serve our customers face-to-face at our nearby branches or online through our convenient digital banking alternatives.

WANTED: A small or large financial institution to come and open a branch in the busy local shopping strip in the beautiful village of Elder Street, Lambton. Your branch will be rewarded by the patronage and smiles of many local, small businesses, their employees and their customers, clients, patients and patrons.

Unfortunately the bean counters at the head office of the Newcastle Permanent have deemed the Lambton branch to be unviable and are closing it. This will leave the businesses, shoppers and residents nowhere local to bank, thus sending them to neighbouring suburbs or giant shopping centres. It seems the Perm’s slogan of ‘Here for good’ is just an irony.

The closure of Newcastle Permanent’s Lambton branch this month will be the fourth time in just over two years that the local shopping villages of Lambton and New Lambton have lost in-branch over-the-counter banking services.

The Commonwealth Bank closed its branch in Alma Rd New Lambton in January 2016. This was followed in November the same year by the closure of Greater Bank’s Elder Street Lambton branch. In June last year ANZ closed its branch in Regent Street New Lambton.

Is Westpac in New Lambton next?

I must say I’m tired of writing and publishing the same story over and again just with the name changed!

I can hear a feint voice saying: “Let’s start our own community bank?”

A Return and Earn reverse vending machine has been installed at Turton Rd New Lambton between the McDonald Jones stadium carpark and the Hockey Centre. Other machines nearby include Jesmond, Mayfield, Edgeworth and Mt Hutton.

A newly installed reverse vending machine near McDonald Jones Stadium has proven popular with locals keen to get 10 cents per item refund.

A reverse vending machine is a machine where you can return empty eligible containers like bottles and cans for recycling. When you insert your empty containers into the chute at the front of the machine, it will scan your container to ensure it is eligible for a refund. When you’ve finished depositing the containers, choose your preferred refund option on the electronic screen.

Since the Return and Earn scheme began in January 100 million bottles, cans and other allowable containers have been returned for a refund.

“100 million returned drink containers is a fantastic milestone to reach. I want to thank everyone who has gotten involved with Return and Earn so far. Every week more sites are rolling out across NSW making it easier for everyone to get involved in the scheme” NSW Environment Minister Gabrielle Upton said.

Dear Lambton & New Lambton Local A Letter to the Editor

Old boots (or shoes) for collection In the next few weeks you should find a leaflet in your letterbox asking if you would like to donate an old (useless) pair of boots or shoes to a campaign.

This is not a charity to raise money.

It is a campaign to raise public awareness and show the Australian Government that Australians don’t want foreign troops in Australia. In fact we want them “booted out”.

The foreign troops, US Marines, are stationed in Darwin every year and together with the US spy base in Central Australia, Pine Gap, make Australia an enemy of whoever the United States makes

an enemy and there are plenty.

The campaigners, IPAN (Independent and Peaceful Australia Network) in association with the local Hunter Peace Group, believes it is very much in our interests as Australians to seek peaceful relations with all countries .

Having another country’s military bases on our soil draws us into conflicts which we don’t want.

So the campaign is titled: “Give ‘em the boot”.

Pink Frangipani Ball returns The tenacity and spirit of a breast cancer fighter will be celebrated next month at the 7th Pink Frangipani Ball.

The fundraising ball honours Sandra Rufo, the late wife of Newcastle councillor Andrea Rufo, who passed away from breast cancer in 2005.

Sandra was diagnosed in 1994, at just 29-years-old.

“Sandra beat the odds time and time again, demonstrating that the human spirit is an incredibly powerful force – and that she was one very special human being,” Andrea said.

“During her courageous 10 year battle with this debilitating illness Sandra would set herself goals.

One of these was to celebrate her 40th Birthday, in style, by holding a masquerade party.

“Sadly, Sandra fell victim to breast cancer six months shy of her 40th birthday.”

Since its inception in 2006 approximately $470,000 has been raised, which has been distributed to groups including the Hunter Medical Research Institute, Cure Cancer Australia and the Hunter Breast Cancer Education and Support Committee.

The black tie, masquerade ball will be held at Wests City on Saturday, April 21. Tickets are $175 per person and include a three course meal, wine and beer, a live band and entertainment.

Institute grants well spent

The Lambton Mechanics Institute has received its second state government grant in as many years, picking up almost $20,000 last month.

A $19,500 cash injection from the Public Reserves Management Fund will all but cover a $23,000 knock down and rebuild of the site’s existing toilets, to see them replaced with an accessible unisex toilet.

It comes after the Institute picked up a $45,000 Community Building Partnership in 2016 to paint the main heritage-listed building.

The painting work is currently underway, with a contribution from the Trust providing the balance of the $66,000 project.

“The Trust is very grateful to the government for these grants which have ensured that both essential maintenance can be undertaken and that the toilets can be upgraded to contemporary standards and provide access to those with mobility restrictions,” Institute Chair Ron Robinson said.

“The building itself is a historical landmark in Lambton and it is pleasing to see the exterior being brought back to its former glory.”

Calling local poets Can you write a great poem about Lambton or New Lambton?

During 1919, the Newcastle Sun had a column called “Poem on a Postcard”. The newspaper invited submissions for short poetry and one was published with the title “Lambton Loveliness” (see facing page) The Lambton Residents Group invites readers to submit a poem with prizes of book vouchers awarded to winners of the following three categories: children less than 13 years, teenagers, anyone over 19 years of age.

Your poem needs to be a maximum of 16 lines, must include the word “Lambton” and of course must be your original work.

Poems can be submitted by email to lambtonresidents@gmail.com up to 1st April 2018.

Double boost for rising local tennis star He has a first name synonymous with Australian tennis and local teenager Lleyton Richards is looking to become a tennis star too.

The Lambton High student turns 15 this month but is already playing in Under 18s and Open Men’s tournaments to gain experience and to increase his ranking.

It is not easy for he and mum Lisa to meet the costs of training, equipment and travel. They have received some good news with a double boost to help Lleyton to realise his dream of becoming professional tennis player, competing on the ATP World Tour.

Local social and affordable housing provider Compass Housing has renewed its Grow a Star scholarship. The scholarship will enable Lleyton to continue conditioning training, so vital for him to gain the strength to compete with older opponents and also to prevent injury.

He’s also picked up a scholarship from Variety Heart to pay for an extra weekly tennis lesson with Hunter champion tennis player Trudi Musgrave.

Lleyton said the scholarships mean the world to him, not just financially but also for the knowledge that

“I love tennis; it is what I want to do so I need to put in the hard work,” Lleyton said.

Last year Lleyton received the Ken Rosewell medal for best and fairest in NSW.

Aged care cottage gets a lift Local community aged care provider NovaCare believes the $315,000 renovation to their Ailsa Craig Cottage means Hunter families now have access to highend, state-of-the art respite care for their loved ones.

The Ailsa Craig Cottage offers families from the Hunter region day, overnight, emergency, and planned respite care.

“Respite care is essential, not just for the guests, but for caregivers. It provides caregivers an opportunity to rest and recharge while continuing to care for their loved ones,” Joseph McCarthy, CEO NovaCare said.

“It was important to us that the end result of this renovation was amazing, beautifully welcoming, as well as functional. We want guests to feel engaged when they come and spend time in this tranquil, home environment,” Joseph said.

Kym has been using the services of NovaCare for several years to assist in the care for her mother, “Mum loves spending time at the Cottage, she enjoys the home made meals, social activities and the staff are wonderful – she often comes home with her nails freshly done. It’s a real joy.

“The Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation assists community initiatives and projects that directly address disadvantage, marginalisation or isolation in health, youth development, and social wellbeing for our communities,” Charitable Foundation Chairman, Phil Neat said.

“The Ailsa Craig Cottage project is a stunning example of how our grants can make a significant difference to the lives of those in our community.”

Last month the New Lambton Village Chamber had its first general meeting of 2018. Around 20 members from the business community came together, engaging in a great discussion about all things New Lambton. Some of the key issues identified included street beautification and branding for our Village.

Importantly, a plan of events has also been created in response to members looking for effective ways to connect with other members and the business communities of Lambton and other areas in New Lambton.

The Chamber will hold its first social networking event from 5.30pm to 6.30pm on Wednesday 7 March at The Duke of Wellington. The event will also introduce a new opportunity for members to showcase their news. The ‘Village People’ segment will feature up to three members who will speak for no more than three minutes about information that may be of interest to fellow members. I am pleased to say that the team from Bliss Beauty will kick-off our first Village People. Thanks to the Duke, the cost is just $10 and includes a welcome drink and some nibblies. Bookings are essential and can be made by visiting www.newlambtonvillage.com.au Chamber representatives also met recently with Greg Fenwick from Newcastle City Council about the Chamber and its priorities particularly in working with Council to identity ways to enhance the profile of our Village within the City of Newcastle. The Chamber has enjoyed a very positive partnership with Council in the past and we look forward to updating you on some exciting plans and information comes to hand.

The new year also brought a lot of activity in the village with major renovations underway at Ritchies IGA and a number of new people taking on the business challenge. Congratulations and welcome to the new owners of Chaddies on Regent and the Blind Baker. Each of these businesses as well as the many who have been here for some time, are contributing enormously to the offerings of our Village and its place within our city.

Eighty years ago in March 1938, eleven suburban councils merged to form the City of Greater Newcastle council. Lambton Council was incorporated on 26 June 1871, and a ballot to elect nine aldermen was held on 7 August 1871. The first Council meeting was held the following day in the original Mechanics’ Institute building in Howe St, and Uriah Broom elected as the first Mayor.

Over the years Lambton Council had 99 different aldermen, and they were all men. For most of the life of the Council this was by law. Women were only allowed to nominate with the passing of the Local Government Act of 1919, but even then, no women ever stood for election in Lambton.

The Council’s biggest crisis was the failure of the electric light scheme. Switched on in 1890, by the end of the decade it had sent the Council bankrupt. As no one wanted to serve on a financially crippled body, by 1899 the Council effectively ceased, with insufficient aldermen to form a quorum at meetings. In the elections scheduled for February 1902, not a single person nominated.

Due to a quirk in the rules of local government, the last man left sitting in the Mayoral chair, Matthew Thornton, retained his position, and for the next two years was the Mayor of a council with no aldermen, not even himself!

of streets in Lambton are named in their honour, including Johnson, Charlton, Dent, Croudace, Notley and Noble. Of particular note is J T Johnson, who was elected Mayor on eight occasions in his 24 years on Lambton Council. He was the final Mayor of Lambton, but his municipal honours did not end there. For J T Johnson was elected to the inaugural City of Greater Newcastle council in 1938. He remained as a representative of the Lambton area until 1950, clocking up a remarkable total of 37 years of aldermanic service.

Why does Tai Chi sometimes look different?

This can be confusing for those new to Tai Chi (Taijiquan), the reason they look different is because there are different styles of Tai Chi and different forms (routines) within each style. The main difference between the styles, with or without a weapon, is in the way the postures are held and the pace that the movements are performed.

The five major styles are Chen, Yang, Wu, Wu/Hao and Sun.

Chen Style is the oldest of the major styles which is dynamic and has an emphasis on spiral force and explosive power.

Yang Style is the most widely practised in the world today, particularly the simplified 24 form which was created at the direction of the Chinese Government in 1956. Yang style is characterised by gentle graceful and slow movements.

Wu/Hao Style has postures and actions that are very compact, and brisk.

Wu Style is characterised by a slightly forward leaning posture and many hand techniques.

Sun Style is the youngest of the major styles and is characterised by a high stance and agile steps.

Whenever one foot moves forward or backwards the other foot follows.

Whichever style you choose to learn, whether for martial art, for health improvement or for relaxation, learning the basics well and practising is the key to enjoying the many benefits of Tai Chi. When you begin, it is a good idea to commit to a full term of Tai Chi classes and settle in to the learning process. Usually the benefits of your Tai Chi will be apparent at this point and as you continue, the benefits will increase, your skills will improve and your enjoyment will be enhanced.

My advice: be patient and keep going.

Bloating

Bloating is just one of many digestive issues for my clients. But lately, I am working with clients where bloating is their primary and only major symptom.

The erratic nature of bloating makes it difficult to manage... let alone understand. Days, even months, can go by without any issues and then bam! Bloating, off and then on. Then feeling bloated all the time.

Many times they have visited their doctor already.

They have had investigations and all reports indicate a normal functioning gut. They are tested for H.pylori and coeliac disease - usually negative.

Where do we start if all these tests are negative?

Usually, not always, bloating is one or a combination of three things: not breaking down food properly; not eating the right foods or; an imbalance in the bacteria in the gut.

For long-term and/or more serious cases, I recommend a Complete Digestive Stool Analysis (CDSA) test. This tells me how well the gut functions in terms of breaking down foods, the beneficial and pathogenic bacteria present as well as ruling out other infections and providing information regarding any inflammation and parasites present.

Based on the results, we then start a protocol that looks to address the issues found. This can include looking at digestive enzymes and hydrochloric acid to help break down food; food intolerance test to rule out any foods that are contributing to stress (physical) as well as the bloating and pre and probiotics to restore the bacteria balance in the body.

This process can take about three months, provided there are not serious bacteria issues (e.g. SIBO) nor parasites.

If bloating is an issue for you, whether alone or in combination with other symptoms, seek help as soon as possible. For many, symptoms continue and get worse. An occasional episode of bloating may not warrant any intervention but a long-standing issue most definitely needs some attention and support

Who is going to get your Super?

Superannuation benefits are often a significant asset of a person. So who will get the death benefits when you die?

For a regulated fund, how the death benefits are paid out is generally determined by the trustee of the fund.

The trustee can only pay the death benefits to one or more ‘dependants’ of the member or to the executor of the estate of the deceased member. A ‘dependant’ is defined to include a spouse, a child or any person with whom the deceased had an interdependency relationship. Broadly speaking two people have an interdependency relationship if they live together and one provides the other with financial or domestic support and personal care.

Death benefits can only be paid out as a lump sum (there is some provision for interim payments) or as a reversionary pension to a dependant or a child of the member under 18, or to child under 25 and who is either financially dependent on the member or disabled.

For most funds the member nominates a beneficiary when they commence the policy. The initial nomination is generally a non-binding nomination, meaning it is an expression of wishes only and is not binding on the trustee.

a dependant. It is not uncommon for young persons to nominate their parents when the policy is commenced but the parents will in most cases not meet the definition of a dependant when the time comes for the fund to be distributed. If there is no person meeting the definition of a dependant the trustee must pay the death benefit to the legal personal representative of the deceased member, the executor of their estate.

The death benefits will then be dealt with under the terms of the members will or on intestacy.

Most funds have provision for members to make binding death benefit nominations which are required to be renewed each three years. The trustee is bound to abide by a valid binding nomination which can be made to a dependant or to the legal personal representative of the member. So it is important to check who are likely to be the beneficiaries of your super death benefits.

I was very lucky to be on holidays recently! We’ve been skiing in the alps behind Tokyo, and late one afternoon we were fortunate to see, standing alone in the deep powder snow, a Japanese serow, or in the local lingo, a kamoshika, foraging for something to eat in the almost nothing of the Japanese downhill ski fields.

He was large and woolly-coated, and looked like a cross between a large goat and a small antelope. It was a surprise to see him standing alone in the snow when

it seemed as if there would be nothing for him to eat.

Kamoshikas, unlike goats and most other antelope, are usually solitary, living on leaves and shoots and acorns, but where our friend was going to find these foods in the deep snow is still beyond me.

Kamoshikas are the only wild ruminants in Japan and are endemic to three of the four main Japanese islands (not Hokkaido) although mainland serows who don’t tolerate the snow and colder climates live elsewhere in Asia.

Serows were once hunted in Japan to near extinction but are now protected. In some areas they are so numerous that they are regarded as a pest, and difficult decisions regarding controlled culling have to be made, much the same as they have been made in Victoria to curb koala overpopulations.

Kamoshikas are said to be the ninjas of the alpine meadows, sprinting uphill and jumping cliff to cliff with agility. Since the extinction of the Japanese wolf their only predators are bears. Serows are called a “living national treasure”, a relic from the ancient days of the formation of the Japanese archipelago, and because they are so sure footed, they are often seen as a symbol of certainty.

Seeing a psychologist

Why do people see a psychologist? Times have certainly changed. Where in times past, people might have felt there was a stigma attached in seeing a psychologist, that sense of shame in asking for professional help has been diminishing over the years. We have begun to understand that talking to someone who is not a part of the problem, someone objective and understanding, and who can bring a wealth of training and research to the issue, can be

extremely helpful.

People of all age groups and from all walks of life come along. As a society, we are now beginning to understand that looking after your mental health is as important as looking after your physical health.

People see a psychologist for a huge number of reasons. Perhaps there is anxiety: a generalised low hum of nervousness that’s always around, or episodes of panic that come out of the blue. Perhaps there is some kind of phobia, like dentists, or injections or spiders or flying or restaurants. For some it is a depression, where life feels like a huge struggle and people sometimes ask what’s the point. For others, it can be challenging relationships. Maybe they are fighting with their partner constantly, or they have drifted apart or there is cruelty. Sometimes the parent child relationship is severed, even in adults. Some face difficulties with colleagues or bosses at work.

Some feel lost. Some feel like they’ve wasted their lives. Some have sexual difficulties. Some have addictions: alcohol, cannabis, nicotine, other drugs, gambling, pornography.

People are discovering that they are not alone and that talking an issue through can help enormously.

In most cases, working openly and honestly with the psychologist, will bring better resolution to make life more fulfilling.

It doesn’t matter if you’re 70, 80, 90 or 100, chances are, you want to keep living at home, even if some things start getting a bit difficult. Did you know there are organisations that can take care of some tasks at home, so you can focus on doing the things you want, and can do?

Types of assistance include light house cleaning, shopping, meals, laundry, changing beds and keeping your gardens neat and tidy.

If your needs are a little higher or complex, you

may be eligible for a Home Care Package which will enable a number of your current needs that are normally coordinated in partnership with an accredited organisation.

Home Care Packages are approved for four different levels of support and can include assistance with bathing, showering, medications or nursing assistance. Each package will be different because it will be designed for your specific needs and your goals.

Last year, changes introduced by the federal government gave individuals the power of choice.

This means that you, the consumer is in charge of choosing the organisation that you feel fits your needs best, and who you want to work with you.

You also have the right to change providers if you are not happy with your current one, which I think is a great step forward. Please be aware that they have the right to charge an exit fee but many organisations, like NovaCare, have chosen to have an exit fee of nil. You can check and compare information about various providers on the myagedcare website.

The Australian Government subsidises a range of aged care services to keep client fees reasonable and affordable.

I’m talking about YOGA. Lots of people think that it means making strange sounds, burning incense and turning yourself into pretzel shapes. Yoga comes in all shapes and sizes, just like people.

Flu vaccine; who really needs it?

Each year in Australia, influenza causes an estimated 3,000 deaths in older people. There are also the economic costs to the community of more than one and a half million lost work days, 300,000 doctor visits and 18,000 people admitted to hospital.

However, it’s not just older people who are affected by the flu. The fact is, rates of flu infection are highest among young children; although children under the age of five are less likely to show typical symptoms of the flu - the fever and the cough – so you may not know that your child has contracted the infection.

Most children cope pretty well with the flu but young children are especially vulnerable to new strains of the flu such as the “swine flu” which was first identified in 2009. Their underdeveloped immune systems can’t manage the invading virus.

So the flu virus picks its victims, singling out those people least able to resist the adverse effects. The greatest concern for doctors and patients alike is the danger, not just of the flu itself, but of severe complications such as pneumonia and the effect of influenza on existing medical conditions.

People with chronic heart, kidney or lung disease, diabetes or other long-term illnesses are particularly at risk. The stress caused by influenza can worsen these conditions and even cause premature death.

Today, prevention is our major weapon against influenza. You can help protect yourself by making sure your lifestyle is healthy with regular exercise you enjoy and a daily diet that includes the widest possible variety of foods. And, of course, annual vaccination against the flu is recommended for all people in high risk categories.

Everyone 65 years or older should have the flu vaccine. As well, at any age, you should be vaccinated if you have an ongoing illness such as diabetes, kidney disease, asthma, heart or circulation problems, or

compromised immunity as a result of HIV, cancer or longer-term steroid use.

Now there is also a special effort to ensure people who might spread the infection to the above groups are vaccinated. This includes health workers – doctors, dentists, nurses, pharmacists, carers and even children. There is mounting evidence that widespread vaccination of children against influenza slashes infection rates in both children and the more vulnerable elderly. This year, once again, only certain brands of flu vaccine are recommended for children under 10 years of age (following evidence of some adverse effects in young children a couple of years ago with a particular brand of vaccine). Your doctor or pharmacist can give you more details.

As in previous years, the Australian Government will provide flu vaccine free of charge to everyone 65 years plus; and those people qualifying for the “free allocation” also include pregnant women, indigenous people 15 years and over, and anyone six months of age and over with a condition “pre-disposing to severe influenza illness” – such as heart or lung diseases.

Travelling with only a smartphone One of the more intriguing developments in travel has been the world-wide move toward replacing credit cards, passports and phones with a single device — the smartphone.

A colleague, Gary Arndt, recently suggested that the smartphone could do it all in five-10 years.

For a start, services like Apple Pay are altering the way credit cards are used.

It’s becoming common to see people holding their

phones or watches next to card reader at shop checkouts while their identity is verified.

Hotels world-wide are gradually setting up keyless entry where a smartphone will open and lock room doors.

And using a phone as a boarding pass is now common at airports.

The latest smartphones are charged wirelessly and cheap international roaming is now common in much of the world. The European Union recently made it mandatory.

Passports stored on phones are in the wings, but are a way off yet - although there are now automated security booths at the departure area of many airports.

Depending on destination and hotel, it’s currently possible to: • board a plane using a pass stored on our phone.

• pay for your hotel using a credit card on your phone • enter your room using your phone • pay for meals and purchases using your phone • possibly use a passport control booth on your way home.

This month in Little Locals we feature Central Newcastle Swimming Club.

Established in 1962, the Club meets at Lambton Swimming Centre Friday evenings from October through to around Easter.

With more than 100 members ranging in age from 5 to 80+ plus years this is truly a family club.

Swimmers of all abilities are encourgaed to enjoy both the social and competitive aspects of swimming.

Apart from the end of the season Club Championships, kids are encouraged to race for themselves and against their own time, rather than each other.
