Lleyton wins Rosewall Medal Lleyton Richards not only has a first name suited to success at tennis, he has some real talent and great sportsmanship to go with it.

The Lambton High Year 9 student was recently awarded the prestigious Rosewall Medal by the New South Wales Hardcourt Tennis Association.

The medal recognises good sportsmanship on and off the court and carries the name of one of Australia’s all-time greatest tennis players, who was not only an outstanding player and good sport on the court, but a great ambassador for the game of tennis. In a career spanning 25 years Ken Rosewall won 18 major titles.

Lleyton gives much of the credit for his success to two special supporters, his mum Lisa and his coach Trudi Musgrave-Edwards.

“Mum is always driving me to Sydney Tennis League or to a tournament somewhere. As for Trudi, well I know wI wouldn’t be where I am if not for her.”

Lleyton told Lambton & New Lambton Local.

As well as the medal Lleyton received a personal letter of congratulations and a signed photo from Ken Rosewall.

What’s bin going on you ask?

A number of local residents witnessed their red (general waste) and yellow (recycling) bins being emptied onto a removalist truck on their normal waste collection day recently.

Fearing this may be some sort of organised identity theft operation a number of residents reported the activity to the police.

Lambton & New Lambton Local enquired with Newcastle City Council about this activity and here is their response: Council has engaged a third party contractor to undertake a survey of 220 randomly selected households in the Newcastle LGA in October and November. The contractors are highly experienced consultants who have undertaken similar audits in over 25 Council areas in the past ten years, including Newcastle.

To protect residents’ privacy council has taken a number of measures including: 1. Not reporting property addresses at any point in the audit process 2. Giving collected waste an independent code and reporting all data in aggregated form only.

3. Prohibiting the public reporting of any specific details related to any personal information.

4. Once sorted and recorded, all collected materials are disposed of to landfill or recycled.

The purpose of the survey is to collect information which assists council to plan for and improve future waste services for the community and to tailor waste and recycling education messages.

The methodology being used has been developed by the NSW State Government to provide robust and reliable data.

Library fine amnesty supports needy Newcastle Region Library members have a chance to clear unpaid library fines by supporting people in need across Newcastle this Christmas. Members with outstanding overdue fees can donate non-perishable food items and toiletries to have $5 deducted for each food item, and $10 for every toiletry, from their overdue fine ledger.

All items collected under the Food For Five, Toiletries for 10 initiative will be donated to local emergency relief agencies OzHarvest, Street Care, Baptist Care and the Samaritans. They will package up the goods for needy families in the lead up to Christmas.

“Food for Five, Toiletries For Ten is an initiative used by public libraries in Australia and across the world to support local charities and settle outstanding fees with members,” Newcastle City Council Libraries Manager Suzie Gately said.

“It’s a fantastic way to remind members to return items at the end of the year.

“Newcastle Region Library has used this initiative in previous years and we look forward to giving back to the Newcastle community.

“There’s no limit to the amount in overdue charges

you can pay off with food, but food and toiletries donations will only be used to clear overdue charges.

“Payment for lost and damaged items or other charges must be paid for with cash or EFTpos.”

Food For FiveToiletries For Ten begins on Monday 13 November and runs until Monday 11 December.

Newcastle Food & Wine Weekend

In last month’s issue we gave readers the opportunity to win one of 10 family general admission passes to the upcoming Newcastle Food & Wine Weekend which was to be held at Lambton Park on the weekend of 4-5 November.

Calling young futurepreneurs Young people in the Hunter looking to start their own business have an opportunity to be supported by local business mentors who will guide them through the business startup process.

The Hunter’s Federal Government appointed entrepreneurship facilitator, Cheryl Royle, is running the one-hour sessions to help young people who are unemployed or stuck on their career choice.

There will be sessions held in a number of Hunter locations, the closest being Newcastle and Charlestown.

Those who go on to be involved in the program will receive support from Ms Royle and other successful local business people.

“Some young people are better suited to selfemployment but often don’t think that it is an option for them,” Ms Royle said.

“The workshops will help you decide if you have what it takes to start your own business, explain what’s involved and show you the considerable help that is available,” she said.

“If young people have an idea, a passion or a hobby they may be able to turn that into their own business.”

“The advantage of the Federal Government’s Entrepreneurship program is we go on to give people free business mentoring.

“You need an idea, passion and maybe a technical skill but you also need some planning and financial management expertise to survive.

“We can help people with those business skills and other soft skills such as effective communication.”

Ms Royle is one of three entrepreneurship facilitators in Australia. The Federal Government established the facilitators in regions where there is high youth unemployment and low uptake of self-employment.

She has extensive experience as a facilitator working with young people. She is managing director of the business capability firm, The Finer Line, and cofounder of Lone Rangers, a new support network for sole business operators.

The one hour sessions run from 10.30-11.30am and will be held at Charlestown on November 23 and

Ever wondered what happens inside a Masonic Lodge meeting? Is it all just secret handshakes?

Wonder no more as New Lambton Masonic Centre at the corner of St James Road and Cromwell Street New Lambton will open its doors to hold an Open Day Saturday 11 November.

The New Lambton Centre is home to three separate Lodges including Lodge Enterprise, Lodge City of Newcastle and Lodge Mayfield Daylight.

All three Lodges will be hosting the free event which will run from 10am to 3.00pm.

“Any person interested in learning something of the ancient institution that is Freemasonry, and what a Lodge does, is invited to drop in and have their appetite for knowledge whetted, their interest piqued and their curiosity ignited”. Arthur Rolph told Lambton & New Lambton Local.

Freemasonry is a worldwide fraternal organisation that promotes moral and personal development amongst its members. Its core values including caring for others, helping those in need and acting with honesty and integrity.

The precise origins of Freemasonry have been lost in time, but it is known that it arose from the guilds of stonemasons which constructed Europe’s castles and cathedrals during the Middle Ages.

These craftsmen were in possession of highly prized skills in mathematics and architecture, which they in turn passed on to apprentices who had been accepted as being worthy of being taught the secrets of their trade. These trainees advanced, depending on their proficiency, to become Master Masons.

In England in 1717 four Lodges decided to create a formal organisation by forming the first Grand Lodge. Freemasonry then spread across Europe and to other countries with amazing speed.

In Australia, Freemasonry can be traced to the First Fleet’s arrival in 1788. The United Grand Lodge of New South Wales was officially formed in 1888, and later became responsible for Freemasonry in the Australian Capital Territory.

At the New Lambton Open Day there will be tours of the Lodge Room, displays of regalia and artefacts, speakers and ample opportunities to ask questions of active Freemasons. You will learn about the Freemason’s charitable intent and the Craft’s involvement in the community. Light refreshments will be available.

Dunn’s did it...state’s best After scoring a win and three places in the Newcastle and Hunter region heat of the annual Sausage King Awards, Dunn’s Butchers of New Lambton have gone one better and been awarded best Continental Sausage in NSW/ACT for their Spanish Chorizo.

The state finals were held in Tamworth recently. The competition was tough up against 18 other regional winners from all over NSW and the ACT. At the Newcastle and Hunter region heat held in August they not only got first for the Spanish Chorizo they picked up second for their Spicy Italian with lemon, pepper and garlic. To these they added equal second for Traditional Australian beef sausage and third for Traditional Australian pork Sausage.

But these fourth generation butchers aren’t about to share the recipe for their award winning sausages suffice to say they only use the finest quality ingredients including only the best pork and veal.

At approximately 5:00pm on Tuesday 17 October a critical incident occurred at the Lambton Swimming Pool. As this is an ongoing police investigation we are limited in the information we can provide or make comment towards.

Our deepest condolences are extended to the family and carer of the young man who passed away during the incident. It was a tragic series of events and our entire organisation is saddened by the outcome.

Crossing concerns

I’d like to bring to your attention the pedestrian crossing on the corner of Elder Street and Morehead Street Lambton.

This is the main pedestrian crossing for many children going to and from local schools and many others that need to go to the shops/ park/library/tennis courts etc...It is directly opposite Lambton Library and Lambton Park.

It’s an extremely busy road at all times of the day-but mostly morning where you will see 99% of cars going through the STOP sign and bank up across the crossing or come up the inside of the crossing oblivious to any pedestrians.

My husband and I along with others we’ve seen crossing have had some very close calls. If someone hasn’t

been hit at that crossing by a car it’s only a matter of time.

I actually did a video and took it to the Police station. They told me to go to the Council.

I had previously been in touch with Sonia Hornery who kindly forwarded it to Council and they agreed that the vision coming from the East of Elder (near the Taxi rank) is obscured, so they moved the Taxi rank back. This was a great outcome for the cars coming from the east BUT it never solved the problem of the law breakers going through the STOP sign and going up the inside of a pedestrian crossing..

I still can’t believe the police just fobbed me off to go to the Council.

I think they need to do something there very soon.

Perhaps a good suggestion would

be to attach a Safety Island in the centre of the crossings or a flashing pedestrian sign or a flashing stop sign.

Although I think it’s up to the Police to enforce the law of stopping at a STOP sign and stopping on the white line, a lot of people don’t realise that they have to stop on the white line of the crossing before proceeding.

Recently I saw a truck doing about 70km/h through the intersection oblivious that it was an intersection.

In another incident, while my husband and I were actually on the crossing a lady nearly drove over my feet. She realised how close she was and said “Sorry”. It’s only a matter of time. Obviously many drivers are blind and don’t see either a pedestrian or a stop sign.

Overwhelming response to Blackbutt reptile theft

Blackbutt Reserve’s popular reptile show will soon make a comeback thanks to pet owners who’ve offered to donate more than 30 animals to replace the star attractions stolen from the reserve last month.

Council will enhance security before accepting any of the replacements pledged after the theft of nine lizards and six snakes over the October long weekend.

New security bars will be installed on doors and windows of the after-hours reptile enclosure - located in a secluded part of the reserve - as well as sensors and CCTV. “Newcastle City Council has been overwhelmed by the generosity of the response from the public and is working hard to expedite the return of our popular wildlife shows,” Newcastle City Council Interim CEO Jeremy Bath said.

“We will accept many of the generous offers from the community as well as buy additional animals to improve our collection so visitors can see a greater variety when we resume our educational shows.

The reptile shows at Blackbutt are expected to resume in the Christmas school holidays “We’re also substantially enhancing security to ensure another theft doesn’t take place.

“For example, metal window mesh is being replaced with welded bars.

“And if in future they somehow got through the bars, sensors will be triggered that will immediately tip off police.”

Council’s Natural Areas Manager Brad West said, despite the great public response, restoring the exhibit was no simple task because only animals with the right temperament could be chosen and gradually conditioned to crowds of people.

“I would like to extend a big thank you to the community on behalf of the whole Blackbutt team,” West said.

“While we do appreciate the generous offers to loan out reptiles, it’s crucial we carefully select the right ones to ensure they’re a good fit for interacting with kids.

“We are confident we can have reptiles with the right temperament in place for the educational shows scheduled to run during the Christmas school holidays.”

Three frilled-neck lizards, two shingle back lizards, a central netted dragon, two Woma pythons and two olive pythons were among the reptiles stolen.

They were the regular stars of the Blackbutt reptile shows, which are normally held at 11am on weekends and daily during the school holidays.

Every day thousands of people drive along Newcastle Road, paying little or no attention to an historic water reservoir nestling under the Lambton hilltop. This year being the 125th anniversary of Hunter Water, it is timely to reveal some of its hidden details.

Part of the Hunter River District Water Supply Scheme, that piped water from Maitland, the 400,000 gallon reservoir was completed in August 1885. At that time, the Newcastle Morning Herald reported: “The reservoir is 65 feet in diameter, and depth at circumference 20 feet.

This excavation has been made in solid rock. A massive brick wall,

running from 5½ bricks thick at foundation to 3 bricks thick at the surface has been erected, about 200,000 bricks having been used in its construction. The floor of the reservoir is of concrete and cement. Then there are two arches and a central dome. These arches are supported by several cast iron girders. The girders rest on massive stone blocks, and are placed in the form of two circles in the reservoir, in order to meet the arch work and dome at top.

The second arch and centre dome being of Portland cement and coke was first spread on temporary wooden frames and allowed a reasonable time to set; this it has done admirably, and has since

borne the weight of horses and drays on top of it. An embankment of rubble stone and earth has been made over the whole of the work.

Several inches of approved soil has been placed over this, and the whole has been sown with grass seed, so that in a few months we may expect the reservoir to present the appearance of a huge grassy mound, and those unacquainted with it will hardly credit that it hides such a wonderful amount of skilled work from sight.”

Students become more responsible for their own learning and move towards becoming more independent and reflective learners They develop the skills associated in developing and presenting (at a public forum) a folder of their own learning, whilst developing employment related skills and knowledge. Wrist and thumb pain You often don’t appreciate something until it has gone or is not functioning well. This is certainly the case when it comes to a type of wrist and thumb pain called “De Quervain’s syndrome.” De Quervain’s syndrome is a painful condition that affects the tendons at the base of the thumb. The pain usually comes on gradually and gets ignored until simple, everyday tasks like taking lids off jars, gardening, or holding a child are very painful. The pain can very sharp and sudden and there may be a “stuck” feeling at the base of the thumb during movement. Some patients do present with swelling in the wrist at the base of the thumb.

De Quervain’s syndrome is often considered an overuse injury of the thumb, hence the reason it often affects people that use their hands to grip and grasp objects on a repetitive basis, such as: carpenters, mothers with small children, and painters. However, it can also be aggravated by arthritis of the thumb.

When in good health, the tendons at the base of the thumb should glide smoothly through a tube called a tendon sheath. Overuse from constant gripping and squeezing objects and the consequent repetitive sliding of the tendon through the sheath can cause the sheath itself to become irritated and swollen.

This irritation of the tendon sheath can cause pain and make it impossible to complete simple tasks like opening a jar, picking up a child or using tools like a hammer. For some people, even touching or bumping the tendon itself can cause excruciating pain.

Acupuncture treatment for De Quervain’s syndrome works by stimulating a local healing response in the wrist and thumb which helps to relieve the pain, swelling and irritation of the affected tendon sheaths of the thumb. Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Euthanasia

It’s the elephant in the room. Always. In social contexts, at Kindergarten talks, and interviewing potential new employees. Hi, I’m Fiona and I’m a vet. The Kindergarten kids nail it – question time is usually spent discussing the day that they had to get Fluffy or Midge or Buffy put to sleep. We address it in job interviews, as it’s a very important part of the job to get right. How do vets cope with euthanasias?

When is the best time to make a decision about euthanasia? Why do owners feel sooo guilty now, not only about euthanasia day, but about the whole thing,

that day they didn’t take her to the beach, or the day they bought the cheaper brand of cat food??

We perform euthanasia as a profession and a community because it is the right thing to do. We can’t let our charges suffer, and we have the ability to administer an anaesthetic that allows them to take their last breath with peace and dignity and with their loved owner(s) standing by.

It’s hard. But in some ways it’s the most privileged part of our job, because we are present to witness the powerful strength of the bond between owner and pet.

The love that has led the owner to make a decision that they have been fearing and dreading. The trust and courage of the pet who won’t stop fighting until that decision is made for them. It’s a testament to the life of the pet that we as vets can share the owners’ grief at these times.

I hate euthanasias. But in a weird way those days make sense of everything else I do.

PS If you do feel guilt – go with it … let it run its course…from what I see the best owners feel the most guilt, and there’s nothing you can do about it!

PPS for some people pet euthanasias bring up serious unresolved grief issues – please get some professional counselling. We can point you in the right direction if need be.

What is an Informal Will?

There are strict requirements in relation to how wills are made and executed to ensure they are valid and accepted by the court as expressing the true testamentary intentions of the person.

When an instrument or document apparently sets out how a person wishes to deal with their assets upon death but the formal requirements for a will have not been complied with, a court may none-the-less grant probate or letters of administration of that document if satisfied of certain things. Such a document may be found to be an ‘informal will’.

Before the court will accept such a document as an informal will it must be satisfied that there is a ‘document’. A document can be anything from which sounds, images or writings can be reproduced. Audio tapes and discs have been found to come within the scope of the definition. In a very recent Queensland case the Court found that an unsent SMS text message left by a person on their phone setting out how they wished their estate to be dealt with constituted an informal will and granted letters of administration of that document.

The court must also be satisfied that the document must purport to state the person’s testamentary intentions, that is, how they wish their estate to be dealt with after their death. Drafts or expressions of wishes subject to change of mind will not be sufficient.

The third requirement, and the matter which generally prevents an informal will being accepted

by the court, is that the court must be satisfied that the person intended ‘that’ document to form their will and to have immediate effect as their will. Written instructions for a will obviously contemplate a later formal document and therefore will not be accepted as an informal will.

The court must also be satisfied that the person had testamentary capacity at the time they prepared the informal document.

If the court accepts the informal will and makes a grant in relation to the document it has the same effect and operation as a will which complies with the formal requirements.

Food Safety Week

Food Safety Week is 11-18 November. The theme this year is ‘is it done yet?’. It is estimated that each year 4.1 million people get food poisoning in Australia, 1 million Australians have to visit a doctor due to food poisoning, 32,000 people end up in hospital, and 86 people die.

The term ‘food poisoning’ refers to the illnesses that are caused by eating or drinking contaminated food or drink. Symptoms of food poisoning can range from mild to very severe, and can include one or more of the following symptoms: nausea, stomach cramps, diarrhoea, vomiting, fever, and headaches. Symptoms can take between a few hours to a few days to appear, and may last for a few days, depending on the cause.

What can we do to reduce our risk of becoming sick with

food poisoning? The Food Safety Information Council provides the following basic recommendations: •Clean: having clean hands will greatly decrease the chance of food poisoning and other diseases occurring.

Wash hands with warm soapy water for 20 seconds, dry hands for 20 seconds before starting to cook, and repeat frequently, especially after handling raw meats, or vegetables with visible soil.

•Chill: foods that should be chilled (e.g. meat, poultry, dairy foods, vegetables, salad ingredients) should be refrigerated at or below 5°C as soon as possible after purchase. Frozen foods should be defrosted in the fridge.

•Cook: cooking food properly minimises the risk of food poisoning. Serve hot food steaming hot above 60°C, and always follow cooking instructions on packaged foods.

•Separate: cross-contamination is a major way for food borne diseases to spread. Raw and cooked foods should be kept separate when storing and preparing to avoid cross-contamination.

Food poisoning is often a nasty experience. Piggott’s Pharmacy can provide advice on the most appropriate treatment for your individual situation. Some people including children younger than 5, pregnant women, people more than 70 years of age and those with compromised immune systems or acute or chronic illness may be more vulnerable to, or affected more by the symptoms of food poisoning.

All other bookings were done in the final month, including courier services at Santorini and London which both worked out cheaper than using taxis - and train trips in Slovenia and the UK. We also saved substantially by using public transport.

For example, we were quoted $80 for a taxi from Changi Airport, Singapore to the heart of the city.

For a start, we used the Internet to book: airlines, an inter-country shuttle, Greek Island ferries, rail trips, couriers, bus tickets, accommodation, city cards and individual tours.

Flights were generally booked about 90 days beforehand because we believe that ensures the best deals. We used four airlines - Scoot, Aegean, Eurowings, and EasyJet. Accommodation was chosen at the same time. We compared hotels and Airbnb prices, with emphasis on central location - and proximity to transport.

Once selected, we pre-paid accommodation - avoiding the cost of ‘cancellation-free’ booking.

This can be risky if the trip falls over, but we prefer to take the chance for a lower cost.

And once booked, we followed up with confirmation emails close to the date of leaving Australia.

Ferries were reserved at least three months ahead of time, as prices can increase as trips get closer. We booked directly with the companies involved - and double checked by email.

We trialled an international shuttle service, Go-Opti, to travel from Venice in Italy to Ljubjana in Slovenia.

What could have taken most of a day by train, was reduced to about three hours. The service collected us and our luggage from one hotel and delivered us in
