Council clocks crossing Newcastle City Council will conduct a traffic survey at a dangerous Lambton intersection, after a local resident raised concerns.

Angela Smith wrote to Lambton & New Lambton Local in November last year to express her concern about the users of a pedestrian crossing at the intersection of Morehead and Elder Streets, Lambton, after witnessing several near-misses due to drivers disobeying a ‘stop’ sign.

(from page 1) “My husband and I, and others we’ve seen crossing, have had some very close calls,” she wrote.

“If someone hasn’t been hit at that crossing by a car it’s only a matter of time.”

Since her letter, Mrs Smith has met with Lambton Residents Group and contacted Council. She met with representatives at the intersection mid-January, which has resulted in a radar traffic survey scheduled for February.

The survey will be held on Morehead Street, south of Elder Street.

Council has elected to do the survey after school returns so that it represents a more typical week than during a holiday period. Crash data from the last five years will also be reviewed.

The survey results and the crash data will then be presented to the Newcastle City Traffic Committee in March, along with potential improvements to the intersection.

The committee includes representatives from Council, the Roads & Maritime Services, NSW Police and Local MPs.

Dogs in space...have your say Newcastle City Council is asking residents to paws briefly and have their say about dog off-leash areas in the city.

A survey is currently available online, seeking opinions on current sites, ideas for new sites and what can be done to improve their amenity.

There are currently 17 off-leash areas in the city, including Michael Street Reserve in Lambton and Acacia Avenue in North Lambton.

Last year, a petition was presented to Council calling for a fenced dog area in Lambton Park.

The survey is open to all members of the community, with Council also keen to hear from residents who may not own dogs but share the same recreation space.

“The strategy will consider what is and isn’t working at existing sites, whether all existing off-leash areas are used and required, and the need for any potential new sites for off-leash areas, including some fenced dog parks,” Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said.

“The strategy will also consider options to improve responsible dog ownership.”

Four drop-in consultations have already been held, and Council representatives also attended Lambton’s Pups in the Park event in December.

Parents and guardians can now apply for a $100 voucher towards their child’s sports registration.

Announced during last year’s NSW Budget, the Active Kids Rebate provides every school age and enrolled child in the state with a voucher that can be redeemed when they are registered for a sport or fitness activity in 2018.

The program aims to increase participation in physical activity, with a 2014-15 National Health Survey finding that 27 per cent of five to 17-year-olds were overweight or obese.

Additionally, it found that only five per cent of two to 18-year-olds were meeting the guidelines for the daily recommended servings of fruit (two serves) and vegetables (five serves).

The $100 voucher can be used on activities that provide a moderate to vigorous level of physical activity, such as team sports, swimming lessons and outdoor education programs.

“Every dollar counts in the household budget and this is $100 back into the pockets of mums and dads so more kids can play sport,” NSW Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres said.

“We’re helping to ensure families don’t have to stretch their budgets to ensure their kids are active and healthy.”

NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet said that the voucher would also assist in lowering the cost of living.

“As a parent, I know how important it is to keep your kids physicaly active, but I also know how household costs can add up,” he said.

“We want to ease the pressure on families where we can, and our hope is that parents take advantage of this rebate and enrol their children in their preferred sport.”

The chosen activity must run for at least eight weeks, and the voucher can only be redeemed once.

Vouchers will expire on December 31, however the rebate will be available again in 2019, 2020 and 2021.

Free ride extended The free introductory period for Newcastle City Council’s popular park and ride service has been extended by a month.

The $2 daily fee for the return trip into the city from McDonald Jones Stadium will now start on Monday 26 February, instead of Monday 29 January as originally planned.

According to Council the extra time will be used to finalise an app designed to make the payment as convenient as possible for commuters.

“There’s still some more work to do on the development of the app before it’s ready to go,” Newcastle City Council CEO Jeremy Bath said.

“That means that users of the service get one more free-month of park and ride.

“So far the service has proved to be highly popular, with more than 1,000 registrations.”

Council recently surveyed users to understand what improvements could be made to the service.

More than nine in 10 of 243 respondents said they had recommended park and ride to a friend. The vast majority of respondents or 86 per cent said the service times suited their commuting needs.

Pearl Box thanks local community On behalf of the Pearl Box charity I would like to thank local businesses and residents for their ongoing support, in particular the staff and management at the Mark Hotel, also the staff at HMRI for their tireless efforts in unravelling the mysteries of the human body, trying to find remedies for the horrendous ailments that afflict us.

Our next major fundraiser in 2018 will be held later this year and we are looking at a Rockabilly theme.

Thanks also to Lambton & new Lambton Local for being there and giving, not only us but a lot of other worthwhile organisations a platform to inform our neighbours.

Suspicions about wildlife deaths We are so fortunate in this area to be blessed with such delightful parks, but I must report sad events which occurred during 2017 in Regent Park at New Lambton.

Beautiful birds frequent these areas, some hiding from humans but still taking advantage of the lovely old trees with plenty of foliage. However as I walk twice daily in this park I was saddened to see a dead Powerful Owl under one of the largest trees on the north side. Nothing could be done for the poor creature but weeks later a dead young wedged tail eagle was found on the eastern side. Later an injured wattle bird which I took to wildlife rescue and then just before new year, a dead raven on the western side.

It does seem suspiciously like someone getting thrills from killing our beautiful wildlife. Perhaps night prowling cats. I feel these incidents too numerous to be ignored. Can someone explain?

Plein air painters to exhibit

A group of ‘plein air’ painters known as The Friday Group will hold an exhibition of their work at the Society of Artists’ newly built extensions in March.

En plein air is a French term that describes painting done on location in the outdoors rather than in a studio.

The Society of Artists building is the former Ladies Bowling Club at Lambton Park.

Opening night is Friday 9 March from 6 pm. The exhibition continues from 9 am to 5 pm on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11. All paintings in the exhibition will be for sale.

Other regular activities held at the Society’s rooms are workshops by the best Australian and New Zealand artists, social days and a variety of classes such as portraits, contemporary art, mixed media, Chinese painting, oils and water colour.

The Hand of Friendship Hotel by Lachlan Wetherall

‘And so will disappear an ancient landmark, which unfortunately will soon be forgotten.’ These closing words of a 1933 newspaper report on a building demolition proved true, for few people today passing the corner of Regent St and Russell Rd know that it was the site of one of New Lambton’s earliest hotels.

The Hand of Friendship Hotel was opened on 18 September 1869, its first publican Benjamin Lunn pledging in an advertisement the sale of ‘none but the very best wines, spirits, ales, etc.’

The premises also offered ‘abundant accommodation for the requirements of a colliery township.’ It was just the second hotel to open in New Lambton,

when the town was barely a year old and the streets not yet formed.

Benjamin Lunn remained the publican until his death in 1878 when the hotel passed to his wife Jane, and later to their son James in 1884. In the ensuing years, the hotel had numerous licensees.

Ralph Snowball photographed the hotel in September 1895, and the group standing at the door is almost certainly the publican of the day, George Masters, with his wife and two daughters.

In the next decade, the hotel passed through numerous hands and the building gradually deteriorated.

In 1905, the police opposed the renewal of the hotel’s licence ‘on the ground that the building was in bad condition, owing to the white

ants.’ It survived that objection, but only for another year. Plans to demolish the building and erect a new hotel came to nothing, and in 1906 John Canning, the last publican to stand behind the bar of the Hand of Friendship Hotel, relinquished his licence.

The building stood idle for some time before it was sold, when it gained a new life as a second-hand goods shop. The weathering of the years however was relentless.

In 1933 the building was finally demolished, and a tangible link with New Lambton’s infancy was lost.

Name python for VIP Blackbutt tour

Blackbutt Reserve’s two newest residents are getting ready to teach thousands of visitors about the wonderful world of reptiles.

The olive python siblings will be the centrepiece of Blackbutt’s new reptile shows which resume this month following the theft of the reptile collection last year.

Newcastle City Council and Blackbutt Reserve have recently launched a competition to name one of the new pythons. The winners will receive a VIP tour of Blackbutt. Entries close on 7 February.

Blackbutt coordinator Brad West said it was exciting to see the pythons settling into their new home.

“They are a beautiful species. They’re a smooth olive colour but their scales have this iridescent sheen that really sets them apart,” he said. “They’re also very calm Sydney Zoo at Darling Harbour. and inquisitive, when raised properly.”

Just because the years are on the increase, it doesn’t mean our social needs decrease. In fact it’s quite the opposite. Staying connected with our local community is vital to our quality of life, especially as we grow older.

Loneliness is a common problem that older people face, particularly when living alone. Studies indicate that regular social interaction leads to happier and more fulfilled lives, which, in turn, means better long-

term mental, emotional and physical health. It may even reduce the risk of dementia, high blood pressure and depression.

You may not have quite as many opportunities to socialise as you did when you were younger and I think we all wonder if you can make new friends and have fun when we are 70, 80, 90 or 100. But I know that you can.

Fortunately, there are local organisations like Probus Clubs and churches that link up older people who are living at home. Organised social activity groups are also available. One of the great benefits of these groups is the provision of transport. You could be picked up at your doorstep and taken for a fun outing like a harbour cruise or lunch at a club or restaurant.

You then can be dropped back home.

If you enjoy craft or would like to learn, why not join a group with similar interests? Maybe you are looking for some gentle exercise that suits your ability like Tai Chi or exercise while sitting down. Find a group you like and connect with similar people. It’s easier than you might think.

So have a look at what options are available near you.

It will make life more interesting and you never know, maybe you will make some new friends this year!

Caveat Emptor, let the buyer beware – the need for pre-purchase inspections

When you are considering purchasing a property it is important that you conduct pre-purchase enquiries to ensure that you are fully aware of what you are buying before you become committed to the transaction.

Some people may not give any thought to requesting pest, building or strata inspections, whilst others may elect not to carry out the inspections for the sake of saving a few hundred dollars, or believing that it will speed up the purchasing process.

Pest and building inspections are visual inspections of

the property, and include parts of the property, such as the roof void or sub floor, not necessarily available to the purchaser on a general viewing of the property.

A building inspection will address the structure of the property and whether there are any defects. Likewise, a pest inspection will look for evidence of current or previous activity of termites, borers or wood decay.

They will look for environmental conditions such as leaks, damage, ventilation issues and construction faults which increase the risk of pest activity.

Purchasers may elect to purchase a property that needs some repairs because it is priced attractively, but going into the transaction without inspections may mean big costs for hidden repair issues.

A purchaser looking to buy a unit in a strata scheme should conduct an inspection of the records of the Owners Corporation. This will disclose things such as, but not limited to, the balance in the Administrative and Capital Works Funds, the levies currently paid by the Lot owner, proposed expenditure, and insurance for the common property. It will also disclose any proposed special expenditure.

I am often asked “What is Tai Chi?” Unfortunately, whilst the question is simple, the subject is far too complex to provide a simple answer. Over the coming months I will endeavour to shed a little light on Tai Chi (Taijiquan).

If I was asked “Why is Tai Chi the fastest growing activity in the world today?” I would be able to formulate an answer based on just one aspect, health.

Although we in the west have only recently begun to understand the health benefits of this ancient martial art, the Chinese have known about it for hundreds of years.

Gut-skin connection

Eczema is a skin condition where the skin becomes red, itchy and inflamed. Usually, eczema is found on the face, arms, hands and/or legs. For some, eczema is unsightly but not a real bother. For others, the itchiness and need to scratch can disrupt sleep and even lead to other infections due to bacteria entering the broken bleeding skin.

Eczema is due to a defective skin barrier. It can be genetic and is often seen in combination with asthma and/or hayfever. Kids are more likely to suffer from eczema, fortunately, most will grow out of it. Some people may start to suffer in adulthood.

Many sufferers revert to corticosteroid creams, which is understandable. They work well. However, there are serious side effects of long-term use and therefore finding the cause or triggers of eczema is important.

There is a link between food intolerances and eczema.

The research is inconsistent as to whether it is cause or effect. Regardless, it is worth determining whether foods are triggering or flaring eczema.

Other considerations include: • Chemical and environmental triggers - fortunately, the intolerance test used in our clinic will test for many creams, fibres and soaps • Soothing and repairing the skin barrier using creams and nutrients • Healing the gut lining For many, part of the issue with eczema is the integrity of gut lining has been compromised, leading to a condition called leaky gut. Leaky gut allows for particles to leave the gut and enter the bloodstream. These wayward particles can trigger inflammatory responses in the body generally, for some this is in the skin.

Therefore, gut healing is an important step in healing and repairing eczema. Possibly the step most likely to prevent relapse.

I often tell my clients that skin is an external reflection of the gut - so caring for your gut means you are also caring for your skin.

How to feel good with Epsom salt

Perhaps you’ve heard about the benefits of Epsom salt and what it can do for you - reducing pain and discomfort from muscle fatigue and spasms, and reducing inflammation in the body for conditions like arthritis, rheumatism, MS, diabetes and high blood pressure. Epsom salt is also known as magnesium sulphate and the interesting thing is where magnesium is found to be low in us humans, issues may occur in body and mind. Magnesium plays a critical role in the production of energy in cells, helping us to feel invigorated; low magnesium levels on the other hand are associated with depression and anxiety. Studies show

increased magnesium levels in the body from soaking in water enriched with Epsom salt as magnesium and sulfate are both easily absorbed through the skin. Sulfates have been shown to play an important role in the formation of brain tissue, and proteins important for healthy body functioning.

In addition they are also thought to be a detoxifying agent.

Epsom salt used at home on a regular basis in the bath helps with aching muscles; soaking feet in an Epsom salt solution helps reduce gout pain. But if you really want to feel benefits of magnesium for longer then I would highly recommend you try floating in a floatation pod. ‘Pods’ are the latest in floatation technology designed to deliver the best possible floatation experience. Our bodies need cholesterol and fats (triglycerides), but having too much cholesterol or fat in our blood can increase our chances of developing high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. High cholesterol and triglyceride levels can be lowered with healthy eating, lifestyle changes and medicines.

Types of fats Fats occur in our food as polyunsaturated fats, monounsaturated fats, saturated fats and trans fats.

Polyunsaturated fats include: • Omega-3 fats – occur mainly in oily fish and fish oils (e.g. salmon, sardines, tuna), some plant and seed oils (e.g. canola, soyabean),

walnuts and linseeds (flaxseeds) • Omega-6 fats – occur mainly in fish, plant and seed oils (e.g. canola, sunflower, soybean, sesame), some nuts (e.g. walnuts, peanuts, pecans, brazil nuts, pine nuts) and linseeds.

Monounsaturated fats Monounsaturated fats occur mainly in fish, plant and seed oils (e.g. olive, canola, sesame), some nuts (e.g. hazelnuts, peanuts, cashews, almonds, macadamias, pecans, pistachios) and avocados.

Saturated fats Saturated fats occur mainly in foods from animals (e.g. milk, cream, cheese, butter, yoghurt, meats), coconut and palm oils, commercially baked products (e.g. pastries, cakes, biscuits, pies, buns) and deep-fried fast foods (e.g. chips, crisps).

Trans fats Trans fats occur mainly in commercially baked (e.g. pastries, cakes, biscuits, pies, buns) and deepfried fast foods made with hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated vegetable fats or oils. Our bodies convert fats from our food into triglycerides and cholesterol.

Saturated fats and trans fats increase the level of ‘bad’ cholesterol in our blood. Polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats reduce the ‘bad cholesterol and increase the ‘good’ cholesterol.

Seeing a psychologist

I am Dr Stuart Edser of Newcastle Psychology & Health at Lambton and I’d like to wish you the very best for 2018. By February, our new year is well apace. We will have new experiences this year, and if history is anything to go by, we’ll probably have some new challenges too.

Knee pain

The most common type of knee pain that affects Australians is known as ‘Patellofemoral pain syndrome,’ which is just a technical term that describes knee pain around and behind the kneecap.

Typically patients suffering with Patellofemoral pain syndrome experience kneecap pain that develops gradually over time and is aggravated with everyday activities such as: walking up and down stairs, squatting and/or kneeling down to pick things up.

The most common cause of Patellofemoral knee pain is a muscle imbalance of the quadriceps (quads) muscles which are found on the front of the thigh.

These muscles attach to the kneecap and when

they contract each muscle has a pulling effect on the kneecap. With this type of knee pain we often see the inner quadricep muscle being weak and the outer quadriceps muscles being overly tight causing a muscle imbalance around the knee. This muscle imbalance produces an abnormal pull on the kneecap which drags the kneecap out of its groove during activities that require the knee to bend.

When the kneecap does not travel through its groove properly while the knee is bending, friction can develop between the kneecap and the thigh bone (Femur) that resides under it. This friction between the kneecap and thigh bone often results in knee pain that is felt around and behind the kneecap.

When treating knee pain related to Patellofemoral syndrome we use acupuncture to clear inflammation in the knee and to help correct the muscle imbalance of the quadriceps muscles. With acupuncture we are able to encourage the weaker inner quadricep muscle to activate and help the tight outer quadriceps muscles to relax. This treatment approach encourages the kneecap to travel in its groove during knee bending and reduces friction between the kneecap and thigh bone.

There is plenty of advice out there about why you should save for your future, but little that explains exactly how.

One of the problems when discussing wealth creation and retirement planning is that it usually involves words rather than numbers. People say they want to ‘build a retirement nest egg’ or ‘make sure I have enough to live comfortably’ or ‘pay for my kids to go through private school’, but rarely are accurate numbers attached to those wishes.

The starting point, experts say, is the development of a thorough understanding of your own cash flow and its

likely future movements. This is even more important for women, whose careers and income earning capabilities can experience more interruptions.

To figure this out, check how much your savings account is growing by each month – if it’s not growing then that’s the first serious problem identified. Or for a deeper understanding, record all of your spending per month over several months to find out exactly how much is going where.

Use this information to figure out what spending is essential and what is non-essential, and where you can cut back in order to give yourself a greater chance of achieving goals.

Next, write down short-term, medium-term and longterm goals, each with financial figures against them.

Then prioritise each of your objectives. Using your knowledge of your current financial position, your current available cash flow and your goals, the picture of how you make those goals reality becomes a lot clearer.

Never set and forget. Always know whether you’re on track or not and always keep an eye on what the investment markets are doing. Do this, and monitor your own behaviours such as paying off mortgages, credit card debts and putting money into savings etc, and the result should be peace of mind and financial comfort.

Heat stress in pets

Very high temperatures have led to some pretty scary encounters with hyperthermia (heat stroke) at the clinic over the last few weeks. Heat stress happens quickly and is potentially fatal. Brachycephalic (short nosed) breeds such as pugs, Frenchies and Aussie bull dogs, as well as Arctic breeds (Huskies and Malamutes) are particularly sensitive to the heat, but remember to be aware also of the little ones – budgies, guinea pigs, bunnies and other pocket pets who are often kept in small enclosures which can be susceptible to poor ventilation.

Dogs and cats have normal body temperatures of around 38.5oC plus or minus a degree. Any time the body temperature goes above 40oC due to

environmental conditions this is an EMERGENCY. Be aware too that we see heat stroke even when the weather is not particularly hot, in conditions including: 1. Animals left outside in hot weather with no adequate shade (NB a “shell” baby pool with a few centimetres of water in it for the dog to cool off is a great idea in this weather).

2. Animals who are overly exercised in hot weather 3. Animals left in motor vehicles 4. Animals left inside for extended periods in inadequately ventilated rooms Pets pant excessively – cats “mouth breath” – and dogs will drool copiously. Gums may start to turn blue and your pet may get staggery and disoriented.

At this stage your pet will NOT get better by herself.

Bring her inside, and set a direct fan on her. Lay wet towels over her body and wet the inside of her ears, her foot pads, her underarms and her groin with a wet face washer. Be careful not to overcool - use cool tap water, not ice. If possible get a rectal temperature and record it. Offer water but do not force her to drink.

Then bring her in ASAP. Severe hyperthermia affects nearly every body system, and can cause catastrophic events such as neurologic impairment and kidney failure. If your pet develops hyperthermia we need to see her straight away, as simply lowering her body temperature may not be enough to address all the problems.
