Change buses here Newcastle will have new bus routes and timetables from January 14. In one of the biggest ever changes to public transport in Newcastle, the ‘New Way’ as it’s being called, boasts more than 1280 extra services across the Newcastle Transport area. The changes are a result of extensive community consultation by the network operator Keolis Downer. In 2016 Keolis Downer was awarded a 10 year contract to run an integrated transport system across all modes of travel, including buses, ferries and, from 2019, the light rail. Routes that currently service the local area (continued page 2)

Return or recycle? Your call According to research, small drink containers account for 44% of the total volume of litter across NSW and have a detrimental impact on the local environment and community. To address this the State Government recently introduced a ‘Return and Earn’ scheme which encourages people to collect and return used eligible containers for a 10c refund. Most drink containers of sizes between 150ml and 3L are eligible for a refund, including plastic PET (#1) and HDPE (32), glass, aluminium, liquidpaperboard and steel. To date there are just three Reverse Vending Machines in the area, at Woolworths Supermarkets at Jesmond, Mayfield and Mount Hutton which will accept containers and provide the refund.

The 10c refund can be taken as an electronic funds transfer into a PayPal account, a voucher which can be redeemed at Woolworths stores or as a donation to charity. You can of course continue to place drink containers in your yellow

lid bin for recycling as usual. Containers recycled via domestic yellow bins will not attract a 10 cent refund for the householder. For more information go to www. returnandearn.org.au/

Pedestrian improvements at Uni Work to improve pedestrian safety on University Drive at North Lambton is currently underway. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald MLC announced the work in December. “The NSW Government has allocated $920,000 in funding to improve pedestrian connections and safety east of Sunset Boulevard,” Mr MacDonald said. “Mid-block traffic lights will be installed on University Drive between the main entrance to the University and east of Sunset Boulevard, to assist pedestrians to safely cross the road. “The traffic lights will have a two staged-crossing allowing pedestrians to cross one direction of traffic at a time and minimises the impacts on traffic flows. Pedestrian fencing will be

installed in the median to assist pedestrians to safely walk the short distance between the two crossing locations. Mr MacDonald said the project will greatly benefit University of Newcastle students enrolled at the Callaghan campuses. “Work will also involve building connecting footpaths, kerb and gutter, ramps and retaining walls to improve access to the new traffic lights.”

The work will result in the loss of three on-street parking spaces along the westbound lane of University Drive, however the loss of parking has been minimised by locating the crossing partly within the existing no stopping area near Sunset Boulevard.” The work is expected to be completed by March weather permitting. Lane closures and a 40 km/h speed limit will be in place during work hours and may affect travel times.

I’m a resident of New Lambton Heights and regularly use the New Lambton shops in Regent Street. This is an attractive shopping and cafe precinct. However, the Telstra exchange is an unattractive blight on the streetscape. The building exterior looks terrible and the landscaping is poor and unmaintained. I am a Telstra shareholder and would appreciate if something could be done about this to improve the architectural look of the building and landscape so that it shows that Telstra cares about the local community. Is the exchange still used? Can it be relocated to a less obvious location so that the land can be developed for more appropriate retail uses? Is there a need for car parking on the Regent Street frontage? Rationalisation of car parking could provide more opportunity for landscaping and screening the building. Would appreciate if some action can be taken in consultation with Newcastle City Council and the relevant New Lambton Main Street group. Wave your kids goodbye As summer holidays roll around, a regular event in the local area has been the January Wave Kids Program put on by Hunter Bible Church at Lambton High School. Now in its 16th year, Wave Kids has grown each year and now regularly sees more than 500 kids each summer. Pastor Sam Hilton, who oversees the event, says local parents contact the church in the months leading up to the January event because their kids loved attending the previous year.

“The kids have a great time, partly because all the section leaders are mainly from our uni-aged church service who take a week off to put on the whole thing. New room for families at NICU Families with a newborn baby in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the John Hunter Children’s Hospital now have a dedicated space to relax, connect and take a break, with the opening of the Ronald McDonald NICU Family Room last month. “It’s a little haven away from the clinical environment of the NICU, great when we need a break or while our baby is receiving treatment,” said new mum Kimberly Bucan, whose baby boy has been in the NICU for 15 weeks. “The NICU can be a very clinical and scary place for new parents, so for them to be able to stepnext door into this very comforting Family Room to meet visitors, grab something to eat or chatwith a friendly volunteer, is a wonderful thing,” said CEO Ross Bingham. “Our charity aims to look after the whole family when they are going through the trauma of having a sick child, and this Family Room will certainly do that for many families across the region,” he said.

Mtn bikes support rescue chopper The Kurri Coal Face Pedal Mountain Bike Ride will be held on Sunday 8 April. This year the organisers are including a mines team challenge with three riders per team. The day also includes a 60 km Dash, 60 km general ride, 40 km ride, 20 km general ride, 20 km Schools challenge and 10 km family ride. It all starts from 8am at Pelaw Main school just out of Kurri. Included again in 2018 is the schools team challenge, a 20km course through the bush on mountain bikes. The Schools challenge is open to students in Years 5 and 6 as teams of two with both riders starting together. Any school or students that would like to take part are invited to go to www. rescuehelicopter.com.au/events to complete their entry.

Over $600 in prizes are on offer for the schools who run 1st, 2nd or 3rd. Organisers would love to see some more schools take up the challenge in 2018. Last year’s ride attracted over 340

riders and helped raise more than $22,000 for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. An early bird entry with a free T-Shirt is available for entrants who nominate themselves by no later than February 21.

Maps, like photographs, provide a glimpse into the past. They allow us to see the shape of our city as it once was. One of the most important and fascinating examples is Barrett’s 1910 Map of the country around Newcastle N.S.W. Previously, maps were mostly concerned with property, and focussed on details such as parish boundaries and mining leases. Barrett’s map however was born of military needs. With the federation of Australia in 1901, defence became the responsibility of the national government, and it was soon realised that the scope and quality of current maps were woefully inadequate for military purposes. Because the newly formed Australian Army did not have

the expertise, in 1908 Colonel Bridges wrote to the War Office in London asking that surveyors and cartographers be loaned to Australia for a period of two years, to assist in local mapping. In answer to that request, the steamship Omrah arrived in Australia in April 1910 carrying four soldiers of the Royal Engineers, including Irish born Lance Corporal Arthur Barrett. The men were first sent to Newcastle, and for the remainder of 1910 worked on producing the map that bears Barrett’s name. It is an exquisitely detailed map, showing individual buildings, the location of churches, schools, post offices, and council chambers. The topography of the land is carefully

laid out, with features such as creeks, vegetation, and the contours of hills. Important industrial landmarks such as quarries, mines, factories, and even chimney stacks are comprehensively documented. Barrett retired from the Army in 1919 to become the proprietor of a bookshop in Melbourne. A print of his 1910 map of Newcastle hangs in the rear room of the Newcastle Family History Society, in the Mechanics Institute building in Elder St. It is well worth a visit, to appreciate close up the beauty and detail of this remarkable and historic map, and for just a moment, to peer into the past. Summer under the sun

Happy New Year. January in Australia is a time when many of us take a small break. It’s summer, the days are bright, it’s hot and it’s not uncommon for businesses and individuals to either go away or have a holiday at home. From a psychological point of view, this is a really good thing. We work so hard over the course of the year. We are busy with work, busy with home, busy with families, busy with groceries and never-

ending laundry, busy with paying bills and keeping the whole show greased and oiled and moving. By the time December rolls around, most of my clients are telling me that they’re ready to stop. By the week before Christmas, I’m ready to stop too. One of the best ways to take a break is to get back into nature. We respond very strongly to nature. It makes us feel better, it lifts our spirits, we feel calmer and more relaxed. Psychologists call this phenomenon, biophilia – the love of life, or more loosely, the love of the natural world. When I treat Major Depression, I always encourage my clients to spend some time in nature. So over January, use Australia’s glorious summer to advantage. Where you can, swim in the ocean or ocean baths, walk Newcastle’s breakwall, get into the bush and smell the rich aromas of our native flora, listen to the birds, drive out into some rural areas, picnic by a river or creek, walk along a beach, scrunch your toes in beach or river pebbles. Getting out doors, away from television and computer screens and away from phone notifications (swicth them off for an hour) and enjoying some nature in summer does all the world of good. Starting fresh

With the start of a new year, many of us are looking to give our bodies a kick start or maybe a fresh start. New gym memberships, new diets, and maybe even a detox. Our bodies naturally detox every day. The body takes harmful products, converts them to less harmful things and then gets rid of them. Pretty straightforward in concept but surprisingly complex in the body. These harmful products can be things like foods or chemicals we ingest, breathe in or put on our skin or by-products of natural processes in the body. Our bodies detox every day, day in and day out. So, is a detox even needed? Certain times of the year lend themselves to a detox; say after the holidays, a big night out or even a stressful period. However, a detox should support the body’s natural processes not overwhelm the body with harsh laxatives and fad diets. How is the best way to detox? First, eat clean. Wholefoods are the way to go. This means no packaged or processed foods, no refined sugar, no preservatives or additives. Simply lots of whole foods, meats, vegetables, whole grains and fruits in a variety of colours. This variety of foods and colours provide the necessary nutrients to support the first two stages of the detox process. There’s no need to go overboard. Appropriate portions and regular meals are best. Also, lots of fluids. Water, herbal teas, kefirs, kombuchas are all healthy fluids to help the body eliminate - the last stage of the detox process. Gentle movement and exercise are also good for elimination. A gentle walk or swim, especially in the open air, supports this last stage of detox. Finally, quality sleep is a must. Your body needs time to repair and heal. And simply rest. All of which support a healthy detox process. Implementing these four tips all help the natural detox function, which in turn, means a healthier you!

Achilles tendon pain The Achilles tendon is a large cord of soft tissue found at the back of the ankle that connects the calf muscles to the heel. The achilles frequently becomes injured and overused, resulting in pain. There are, however, other factors such as: flat feet, tension in the muscles of the back of the legs (hamstring and calf muscles), and weakening of the tendon that can all cause achilles pain. In our experience, it is very common for patients to present with a combination of these causative factors. When the achilles tendon becomes injured the

individual will often experience stiffness, pain, swelling and/or a lump on the achilles. In the beginning stages the achilles may just be stiff and painful with the first few steps in the morning, but if left untreated it may become stiff and painful all the time. It is at this later stage that we usually get patients suffering from achilles tendon pain come limping into the clinic asking if acupuncture can get rid of the pain. Pain in the achilles tendon can go by a few different names. The three most common being Achilles Tendinitis, Achilles Tendinopathy and Achilles Tendinosis. Our treatment approach to pain in the achilles tendon is typically three fold. Acupuncture to help release muscle tension in the calf and hamstring, and help clear inflammation and promote healing in the achilles. Soft tissue massage to break up scar tissue in the tendon and corrective exercises and stretches to assist in proper foot mechanics and tendon recovery. We relish shouldering the heavier parts of the burden of selling. – It’s what we’re here to do – but the more you can to do facilitate a sale, the more you’ll reap the rewards. Below is a selection of our top tips for vendors to help us on the way to getting the best results. They range from highlighting some of the most important areas for you to address, to those fine touches that might just help us get prospective buyers talking to us and getting an offer which you are happy to accept. Building inspection: Consult a building inspector and ask him to supply you with a signed report if there is something that needs rectifying, fix it. This is a great investment as it will ensure the contract will proceed to exchange and settlement with the least chance of any issues. Don’t hang around: Vanish to the neighbours’ place or the backyard when your agent brings a prospective buyer to your home. Nothing turns a buyer off faster than the owner trying to sell his own home as well as the agent, they think you are desperate. Know your market: Be realistic in your price expectations. Remember, if you are selling on a ‘down market’ you are also buying in a ‘down market’. Should you feel the price assessment is too low and you want confirmation of your market appraisal, you can always consult a Valuer. Repairs: Selling is the time to do those little things you have been putting off – sticking windows, loose door knobs, dripping taps, broken wire doors, leaking gutters, etc. Decorate: Remove any dirty marks from the walls and ceilings, touch up any chipped woodwork or torn wallpaper. In some cases a paint job costing only a few hundred dollars can add a few thousand to the eventual selling price. Keep paint colours neutral tones, unless they are feature walls. Extra space: Have your home comfortable and uncluttered. Clear bench-tops and remove excess furniture to give a spacious feeling. Family pets: Not everyone likes animals. Keep pets out of the way – if possible, outside of the house. Leave it to us: Your agent is skilled and trained in bringing negotiations to a favourable conclusion. Avoid discussing price, terms or other factors directly with the potential buyer.

Noels and koels I often wake up at this time of year about 4am to the fairly piercing and urgent call of a male koel.. “quo-eel..quo-eel ..quoee..QUOEEE!!!”, but it took me years to actually see one, which is not surprising since they are shy birds who do most of their calling before the sun comes up. Yesterday our former volunteer and now Veterinary Science student Rachel rescued a koel from her garden, where it had moved in to eat the figs from the family fig tree (you can see him on our Facebook page!). Unfortunately he was dehydrated in the heat

and also very underweight judging from his sharp keel bone which should be well muscled on either side in a flying bird. We gave him a big long drink to hydrate him (this is always the first thing to do if you find a distressed bird - most will readily accept water via beaks from a syringe or even a teaspoon), we examined him for obvious injuries (none, luckily) and put him into our native room with a heat pad which he could move away from or towards depending on his body temperature. When he had settled we ran a blood profile to see why he might be so skinny – luckily all seems well. He is now on his way to a carer at the Native Animal Trust Fund for feeding up and observing to make sure he gets back on to his feet before release. If you find a bird or native animal in distress put it in a quiet warm dark environment, offer it a drink if possible, and pop it down to the vets. In our experience babies who have fallen out of their nests can’t go back to mum and dad until they have learnt to fly, although others have had success building easily supervised substitute nests accessible to parent birds.

What effect does Marriage or Divorce have on my Will?

A marriage in general automatically revokes your will. There are a few exceptions to the general rule, for example, a will made “in contemplation of marriage” is not revoked. Another exception is that any gift made to your spouse or, the appointment of your spouse as an executor, trustee or guardian is not revoked if you are married to that spouse at the time of death. A divorce revokes any beneficial disposition, or gain to the former spouse and revokes any appointment of the former spouse as the executor, trustee or guardian. A divorce does not however revoke an appointment of the former spouse as trustee of property left in trust for the children of you and your former spouse. That ensures that the children of you and your former spouse are still able to receive an inheritance from your estate as is likely to be your wish. The former spouse is not prevented from making a family provision claim against your estate, in other words making a claim that they were left with no or insufficient provision in your will. What if I have signed a Power of Attorney or an Enduring Guardianship appointing my spouse or former spouse? Marriage does not revoke a power of attorney however the appointment of an enduring guardian is automatically revoked by marriage unless you marry the appointed guardian. In relation to divorce, neither a power of attorney nor the appointment of an enduring guardian are revoked by a subsequent divorce and there must be an express revocation signed and served on the former appointed attorney or guardian in order to ensure they cannot act under the relevant authority. If there is a significant change in your circumstances you should review your will to ensure that the will and other testamentary documents express your wishes and deal with your estate as you intend. With blended families we are often asked what can be done to ensure children of previous relationships do not miss out. Making sure your documents correctly set out your wishes is important.

Traditional people-movers like trains and coaches are being challenged in many areas by web-based transport marketplaces - a little like Uber for longer distance routes. We recently experienced this phenomena when planning a trip overland from Venice, Italy, to Ljubljana in Slovenia. A direct flight was beyond our means, while trains and coaches required several stops. So, we went onto the website of a firm called GoOpti, which links travellers like us with transport companies in seven European countries. In technical jargon, the website uses data analytics and time/route algorithms to offer on-demand, shared shuttle services at the lowest cost possible. We entered pick-up and a drop-off locations, the number of travellers, the amount of luggage and our desired departure and arrival times. The luggage limit was particularly generous. The GoOpti system then offered us three transportation options, from which we selected a shared shuttle - and then we paid by credit card. The cost was far less than travelling the same route by air, rail or coach. On the morning, we received two emails informing us that the shuttle was on its way and the exact time it would arrive outside our hotel. The second email told us when the vehicle had actually arrived and the name of the driver. It was on time to the minute, appeared near-new; a modern, roomy, spotlessly clean and comfortable shuttle capable of carrying seven or eight people and luggage. There were only two other passengers, also travelling to Slovenia. At present, this web-based transport marketplace operates in Italy, Germany, Slovenia, Austria, Hungary, Croatia and Spain, but it is spreading rapidly across Europe. Take a look. Heartburn is very common

It is a feeling of discomfort or burning rising up from the lower chest to the neck. Most of us at some time in our lives will experience heartburn – after a big meal, undertaking strenuous activity too soon after eating, or drinking too much alcohol or coffee. Heartburn (gastrooesophageal reflux or indigestion) is really very common. What is heartburn? Heartburn is caused by the contents of the stomach coming back up into the oesophagus where it can cause a burning sensation in the chest or throat. Persistent reflux that occurs more than twice a week is considered to be gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), and it can eventually lead to more serious health problems. People of all ages can have GORD. Causes of heartburn Occasional heartburn on the other hand can be caused by eating too much, from anxiety, and advanced pregnancy – to name but a few of the causes. Certain medicines may precipitate heartburn, and obesity or smoking may also lead to symptoms. Treatment of heartburn can include lifestyle changes as well as the use of medicines. Treating heartburn Simple changes to diet and lifestyle may assist in preventing or reducing heartburn. • Keep to a healthy weight. • Quit smoking. • Avoid foods that aggravate or cause symptoms. There are a number of medicines to treat heartburn. Quick acting antacids (e.g. Mylanta, Gaviscon, Quickeze) neutralise stomach acid, and longer acting agents that reduce the production of acid. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor about other strategies that can assist with managing GORD. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist about the best medicine for your symptoms, particularly if you take any medicines for any other conditions.
