Labor strengthens Council numbers September’s election for the City of Newcastle has been run and won. Of a total voter enrolment of 27,345 people in Ward 3 (Lambton, New Lambton, Kotara, Georgetown and Waratah areas) 22,229 ballots were counted. That’s a voter turnout of 81.29 %. If you are the one in five people whose name wasn’t marked on the roll as having voted you can expect a fine of $55 from the Electoral Commission. That’s more than $280,000 in fines on its way to the Electoral Commission from Ward 3 alone! The Labor Party’s Nuatali Nelmes was reelected as lord mayor with a convincing 38,698 or 42.57% of the first preference
votes. Her nearest rival, Independent Kath Elliott, received 18,925 or 20.82% of first preferences. Ms Elliott was subsequently elected as a Councillor for Ward 2. Across the city’s four wards six of the 12 Councillors-elect are from the Labor Party ticket, handing the Lord Mayor a coveted outright majority. “Labor has not had a majority on Council since Joy Cummings was Lord Mayor in the 1970s. Voters have overwhelming endorsed our vision for the City and our track record of delivery.” Nuatali Nelmes said in a statement. “During the last term of Council a number (continued page 2)

For the first time ever Ward 3 will be represented by two Labor Councillors during this term. Joining the re-elected Councillors Declan Clausen (ALP) and Independent Andrea Rufo is Peta Winney Baartz. Online tennis bookings ace Lambton Park Tennis Club has recently installed an online booking and payment system that does away with the old system of picking up and returning keys and cash payments in envelopes. The new system allows you to book one or more of the Club’s three synthetic courts instantly from your smart phone or home computer. Once you book and pay online through the secure Tennis Australia payment system an access code is sent to your phone or email. This code allows access to the courts for 10 minutes before and after your allotted booking. Paul Warwick from Lambton Park Tennis Club says the system has worked really well to date and has already shown an increase in court bookings. The system cost $12,000 to install of which Lambton Park Tennis Club and Tennis Australia each paid half. Court hire is very reasonably priced at $12 per hour in the daytime or $17 per hour under lights. To check court availablility and to book go to: www. tennis.com.au/lambtonpark/court-hire

Firies take on Sydney Tower for MND On Saturday 14 October eight members of NSW Fire & Rescue 357 Lambton crew will climb Sydney Tower Eye along with hundreds of other firefighters as quickly as possible in full fire fighting equipment to raise money and awareness for Motor Neurone Disease (MND). The team, which has used the McDonald Jones Stadium stairs for their training, will race to climb all 1504 stairs (98 floors) of the tower carrying an additional 20kg of gear. It will be a gruelling challenge, but nothing compared to the challenge patients with MND face every day. MND is a progressive, terminal neurological disease. MND affects the nerve cells (neurones) controlling the muscles that enable us to move, speak, breathe and swallow, causing them the degenerate and die. A person’s senses and intellect are not affected. The team is holding a fundraising sausage sizzle at Bunnings Kotara on Friday 6 October. To sponsor the team go to www.firiesclimbformnd.org.au/ and search for ‘Lambton’. Every dollar raised will directly support vital MND research at Macquarie University’s MND Research Centre.

VALE Fay Walls 12-9-1932 to 7-9-2017
“The gentle woman of netball” Fay Walls lived her whole life in the Lambton area. She married Ronald (Charger) Walls (dec’d) and had three children, Jennifer, Peter and Michelle. Fay joined the Committee of the Lambton Basketball Club in 1970 – before the name change to West Leagues Netball Club in February, 1971. Fay was a member of West Leagues Netball Club for 35 years and held many positions on the Executive Committee. Life Membership of WLNC was bestowed on Fay in 1980 and she was the recipient of a Special Service Award in 1992 for her 23 years of service to that point. She was elected president in 1986 and held that position for 28 years until 2004. Fay coached the West Leagues Netball Rosellas Team for 20 years and on many occasions she would coach a second team as well. In June 1997 she was the winner of the Wests Community Member of the month award and at the end of that year she was named West Community Member.

Fay was at the WLNC courts three afternoons every week helping out with any duty and enquiry required – such as registrations, organising uniforms and the like. On Saturdays she would arrive at the Newcastle courts in time for the first game at 9.30 a.m. and would not leave until the last game late into the afternoon – she would see every West game that was being played which involved a lot of walking from Union Street side to the Parkway Ave side. Fay was always there to listen to any players’ or parents’ problem. Her advice was keenly sought after by many players and officials. Her dedication to netball was outstanding and she was the foundation for the strong and successful West Leagues Netball Club that exists today. When the netball uniforms changed or the players outgrew theirs, Fay would make most of the uniforms herself. At her business, the players would visit for a measure and return the next day to be fitted with the uniform itself. At the clubhouse, to this day, we still have in use many sets of pinnies that were made by Fay. Fay emphasised that she continued to be involved because she loved netball and she loved being involved with girls – during this time – she also ran a successful business “The Baby Shop” in Elder Street, Lambton and carried out the day to day duties of a wife, mother and grandmother. Her dedication to netball was outstanding, and she will always be remembered and honoured for her dedication and commitment to West Leagues Netball Club and netball in general.

MS cure a wheely good cause Genevieve Nawrot of Hamilton North, along with two friends from the Newcastle Unicycle Group, will be riding their big wheeled unicycles from Sydney to Wollongong on the Sunday 5 November to raise funds for people living with multiple sclerosis (MS). Now in its 36th year, the MS Sydney to the Gong Ride is an epic, scenic ride that has seen tens of thousand of riders involved. MS often affects young people and gradually reduces their freedom to do all the things they want to do. “There is currently no cure for MS. I cannot imagine the impact such a diagnosis would have on a person’s life.” Gen told Lambton & New Lambton Local. A unicycle doesn’t free spin or coast like a bike, so Gen and friends will be pedalling the entire distance of the ride. Over the 58km course the wheel will rotate more than 20,000 times. “As far as I am aware, we are the only three unicyclists to be riding in a sea of bicyclists. If you would like to donate to this very worthy cause please google ‘MS Sydney to Gong’, click the official page and search ‘Genevieve Nawrot’ in the top right hand corner.” Gen said. If you see her out and about feel free to donate in cash or just say hello. Donations over $2 are tax deductible.
Set it. Forget it. Regret it. You’d be amazed how much you could save by refinancing.

China Week crosses cultures, countries and continents Newcastle China Week returns this month with a supersized festival that will feature something for everyone, especially around the Hamilton area. From enlightening business forums and global networking events, a night of noodle markets under the stars and a vibrant festival celebrating modern and traditional Chinese culture, traditions, food, art and travel, it will be a journey for both the mind and the senses. The initiative, led by the University of Newcastle’s Confucius Institute, will once again delight, inspire and entertain over 20,000 locals and visitors with its immersive program of events and valuable opportunities for cultural exchange. Cher Jones, University Director of Institution Relations for Greater China, said that the event was especially pertinent in our current climate given the economic, educational and cultural relationship the Hunter Region shares with the world’s second largest economy.

Co-op sprouts new Hamilton outlet Would you like to know how to eat healthier, support local farmers, reduce your grocery bill and better connect to your local community? The answer – become a member of the Beanstalk Organic Food Cooperative. The Beanstalk is a notfor-profit community organisation dedicated to supplying ethically grown and affordable organic produce. The Beanstalk operates a weekly stall each Tuesday from 4:307:00pm at St Andrew’s Church Hall, Mayfield. At the stall, members pick up their pre-ordered mixed fruit and vegetable box. There is also the opportunity to purchase extra food like eggs, milk, bread, flour and nuts. Recently, a new collection point, or ‘Beansprout’ has been set up in Hamilton in association with our The Commons in Beaumont St.
Annual membership is $40 and weekly boxes cost $25 ($23 concession). Often, produce is less expensive from the Beanstalk than the supermarket which is “really exciting,” says Michelle Roach, the stall coordinator. “Beanstalk prices are comparable to supermarket prices yet our produce is often fresher, healthier and more socially and environmentally responsible doesn’t get much better than that!” Michelle became a member shortly after moving to Newcastle in July 2011. She found the Beanstalk whilst searching for options around organic/local produce delivery to her home in Tighes Hill. Although the Beanstalk doesn’t yet deliver to homes, most members find the Tuesday evening shopping experience really enjoyable.
Michelle says “arriving at the Beanstalk after a long day of work is always such a lovely energising experience – kids running around playing, lots of smiling healthy people walking around eyeing off beautiful colourful produce.” The Beanstalk is constantly evolving trying to better meet member’s needs. They’re soon to launch an updated online ordering system and are investigating possibilities of further Beansprout collection points in other suburbs. You might even like to start one with a group of neighbours! Michelle says anyone interested in learning more is welcome to drop in any Tuesday evening. “Grab one of those smiling healthy looking people, they’ll be more than happy to give you the rundown on how the store and membership works.”

That was then, this is now Jack Burnley
The photographs of Ralph Snowball are not only technically proficient, but are masterful in their choice of subject and composition. This month’s photograph, from 1908, was taken at the northern end of Regent St in New Lambton, looking towards Braye Park hill in the distance. In the background, two coal wagons of the Lambton colliery portray the wealth and scale of modern industrial coal mining. In the foreground, a horse, cart and wooden shed reveals a more humble employment. In the centre of the photo stands John Burnley, age 20, known to family and friends as Jack. A hand painted sign above him proclaims him as a bottle dealer, the artefacts of his trade arranged around him like a decorative picture frame. Bottle dealers collected empties from hotels and sold them on wherever a profit could be made. The word “licensed” a reminder that the “Bottle-ohs”, as they were called, had an unsavoury reputation and the state parliament felt the need to pass legislation in 1906 to regulate the industry.
by Lachlan Wetherall
These were uncertain and sorrowful times for the Burnley family. Jack’s older brother had died in 1901 aged just 22. His father had died two years earlier in 1906. Jack, being the only son, was left to care for his widowed mother. War came to the world, and in January 1916, Jack enlisted in the army. He was assigned to the 34th Battalion as a bugler and embarked for Europe in November. Tragically, within a year, he was killed in the battle of Passchendaele on 12 October 1917, 100 years ago this month. One final detail to note in Snowball’s photographic portrait of Jack Burnley ... a bugle, perched atop the brake lever of the cart. A poignant foreshadowing of Jack’s untimely death on the battlefields of the Western front nine years later, it is also a reminder to us that the prosperity and safety we enjoy now, owes a measure of debt to the sacrifice of others back then. High Notes Term 3 has been a significant period for the school in terms of community, leadership, cultural and sporting achievements. It also marks the end of formal schooling for our Year 12 students. As a group they have been great ambassadors of the school and the Lambton community and we wish them well in their examinations and future endeavours. During the term we held a number of fundraising events. The Year 10 Commerce class held Sales Stalls making a profit of $2,806 which will go to Soul Café, a service which provides hot meals and support to the highly disadvantaged people of the Newcastle region; and on Friday 18 August the Senior Student Body and SRC organised a fundraiser day for Lauren Parker, an elite athlete who seriously injured herself in the Ironman Australian Triathalon, raising $2,464.15. Thank you to the student body for raising these funds to support Lauren’s medical costs, ongoing rehabilitation and potential modifications to her home in the future. Our school leaders, Clare Corliss and Monique Rosser, were awarded The Minister’s Award for Excellence in Student Achievement by the Honourable Rob Stokes, Minister for Education. This Award is one of the highest honours awarded to students in NSW state schools. It is awarded to students who demonstrate academic excellence; sporting and/or cultural achievements; leadership skills; display values; and made significant contributions to the school community. Only forty students from the thousands of Year 12 students across the state are recognised with this honour each year. We also held a leadership luncheon to announce the 2017/18 Senior Leadership Body Executive. Congratulations to our newly appointed school captains, Sophie Carson and Riordan Davies, vice – captains Jasmine Stuart and Charlie Ekin, and senior prefects Cassandra Reilly and Nicholas Bright. The Music Department and students should be congratulated for the amazing performances at Lizottes. I would like to acknowledge the talented students and music staff for producing such a professional and entertaining experience. The event was very well supported by our Lambton community. World Heart Day
In late September we commemorated World Heart Day. This day was an opportunity for all people to take part in the world’s biggest intervention against cardiovascular disease (CVD). According to the World Heart Day organisation, any disease of the heart, vascular disease of the brain, or disease of the blood vessel is considered CVD. The most common cardiovascular diseases include coronary heart disease (e.g. heart attack) and cerebrovascular disease (e.g. stroke). Coronary heart disease (also called ischaemic heart disease) is

caused by the build-up of fatty material called plaque on the inside walls of coronary arteries. Plaque is mostly cholesterol. A healthy heart is essential for healthy living. Heart attack and heart disease are the world’s biggest killers – over 17 million people each year die from cardiovascular disease. Understanding warning signs and symptoms of a heart attack can be one of the most effective methods of preventing death from heart disease. Heart attack warning signs and symptoms can vary from person to person. They can also vary from one attack to another in the same person. Signs and symptoms may not always be sudden or severe. Signs and symptoms include dizziness, shortness of breath, cold sweats, and nausea/vomiting. You can have these symptoms for weeks before a heart attack actually occurs. You can get more information on heart disease and heart attacks from pharmacies around Australia providing the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia’s Self Care health information. Self Care Fact Cards available from these pharmacies include topics such as Warning signs of heart attack and High blood pressure as well as lifestyle topics such as Staying a non-smoker. Brett Plumb

PROPERTY
Matters with Lisa Macklin of Dalton Partners Real Estate, New Lambton
Selling property in spring: advantage you!!
Across Australia, buyers have increasingly itchy feet and tingling bidding fingers! The motivation to make lifestyle decisions reaches its zenith in spring, traditionally acknowledged as the busiest and most robust season of the real estate sales year. If selling property is on the cards for you, procrastinate no longer! With interest rates at an all-time low, buyers are enjoying better access to funds at cheaper rates than ever before. Confidence in Numbers Naturally cautious, the Australian property investor
NLF
moves with the herd. When buyers sense competition around a property, they better perceive its value and have the confidence to bid with gusto. In short, buyers desire a property more because others also want to purchase it. Should the same property have little interest at rainy winter open for inspections or a poor auction attendance on a blustery day, buyers may quibble at paying a premium price. Lesson: selling while there’s high buyer enthusiasm can lead to a better sales result for you. Impressions Count Spring is sprung, a hint of the holiday season is in the sweet air, and the buyers are making plans for their year to come. Those with the goal of upsizing, downsizing or restructuring their investment portfolio by year’s end are ready to make decisions – so grab their attention by presenting your home at its best. Tidy the garden, freshen the paint and let the sunshine in. Spring shows off your home at its very best – not too hot, not too cold, just right! – and proves a perennially popular time to sell. Like the season of spring itself, competitive buyer behaviour fades as swiftly as it appears. If selling is on your agenda in the near future, now is the perfect time to call us if you are keen to bring your property to market.

VET Chat by Dr Fiona Wallace of New Lambton Veterinary Clinic
Food for pets... Raw or processed?
We have noticed an increasing trend to feeding natural diets, as opposed to commercial pet foods, to our pets, especially dogs. As the effects of processed and junk food on our children become more publicised, so too the index of concern for pets eating a solely processed diet has increased. What is the best diet for our pets throughout all their life stages? Some vets passionately believe in an unprocessed raw food diet, while others equally passionately believe that animals are at risk of nutritional imbalances with
home prepared food. Fresh food supporters liken the argument to the breast milk vs formula debate (while we can go close, we can never improve or even equate to natural processes), while commercial food advocates argue that in our busy lives no-one has time to pay their pet’s diet the precise attention it needs. In a recent Vet Chat we warned of the risks of feeding bones to dogs, for example, slab fractures and enamel chipping. How can we assimilate all this advice into one healthy package for our furry friends? The advice of the Australian Veterinary Association is to ensure a balanced diet, and the extent to which that is natural vs commercially prepared will be up to you and your lifestyle. Our advice to local pet owners is this: (1) avoid the cheaper brands of commercial pet food; (2) there are some great home-made diets available as long as you can commit to consistency; (3) avoid large hard bones like femurs and marrow bones, but feel comfortable to feed chicken necks, chicken carcasses and lamb necks; (4) be especially vigilant with growing pups and kittens who have a high calcium and protein requirement; and mostly (5) provide variety to your pet, whether that involves a base of dry kibble with this and (non fatty) that, or a fully researched natural diet.

HEALTH Matters with Sara Knight of The Gut Clinic
Food intolerance testing
I use food intolerance testing in my clinic frequently. I, and my clients, believe it to be the single most important tool in improving overall health, especially gut health. The test, based on a hair sample, allows each individual person to know what foods they should eat. Not the latest diet, not what their friends recommend but a list of foods that are best suited to their own unique body. Food intolerance testing is amazingly powerful as it takes the guesswork out of trying to figure out which foods you should and should not eat. This process can be especially challenging as intolerance is about load and threshold. It is not as much what you just ate that caused the tummy upset, itchy skin or brain fog, but what you have eaten over the last 3-5 days. You can eat a given food once and be fine, the next time though you have a reaction. This can be so frustrating! Then you don’t eat the dairy or the wheat, you may feel a bit better but not as good as you would like. Then you have another reaction. A food intolerance test gives you exact recommendations on the foods to eat. No more guessing, wondering or stressing. I test against over 500 different foods so you get the answers you need. Even better, eating the right foods is so powerful that you should start to feel better within days. Getting the food right is the first step in optimal gut health. Eating a wholesome variety of foods that are compatible to you means that your gut and the many bacteria living in your gut can get back to supporting your health, not undermining good gut, mental and skin health.

LAW
Matters by Ronnie Wall of Wall Legal, New Lambton
What will happen to my super when I die?
When you die the Trustee of your super fund decides on the dependants who receive your super. Many people are blissfully unaware that their entire super, which may include life insurance, is up for grabs amongst the people they leave behind. Under superannuation law, the Trustee of your fund has the discretion and obligation to use this power. You may say to yourself, I have nominated my beneficiaries, but is your decision binding? Two cases have recently received media coverage, where it appears that the Trustee has made a decision which may not have been the wishes of the deceased person. The first relates to a person who passed away leaving
two young children. Despite having a Will appointing an Executor and beneficiary, which would have subsequently provided for his two young daughters, the Trustee paid the majority of the benefits in the fund to a woman with whom he had a comparatively new relationship. The Trustee found that the woman had been living in a domestic relationship with the deceased for nine months. The Trustee awarded the woman 78% of the benefit, with the remaining benefit paid to his children. You have to ask yourself is this what he would have wanted? The second relates to a man jailed over the dangerous driving that killed his girlfriend. After serving six months of a two year sentence, the offender was released. The deceased person had nominated her parents and sisters as beneficiaries of her superannuation however, the Trustee found that the deceased and the offender had been living in a domestic relationship at the time of her death, which the family disputed, and despite the fact that he was charged with her death he was awarded $200,000. You may have nominated your beneficiaries but have you made a Binding Death Nomination? Don’t allow the Trustee of your superannuation fund to make decisions on your behalf. These two cases highlight the reason why you should receive professional Estate Planning advice, as your superannuation does not form part of your estate when you make a Will. You should put steps in place to protect the people you love.

WELLBEING
Matters by Lee Clements of Sensom Health & Wellbeing
Zero gravity freedom
Last month I shared my belief of how significant yoga can be in helping you feel better about yourself (thoughts endorsed by several articles in the Herald in the last few weeks!). Since publication of my article a number of clients have commented on how yoga has certainly made a difference but that since they also added floating to their wellbeing programme, how much deeper their
feelings of physical and emotional balance have become. For the uninitiated, floating may seem a step beyond their comfort zone; indeed that is what a number of my clients thought when they first took the step of ‘having a float’. They questioned if it would be claustrophobic, challenging, too ‘new age’. But once they experienced it, they ‘got it’. They found that not only does floating reduce their stress and anxiety levels, it also relieves aches and pains and helps recovery from injuries and illness. They found that being supported effortlessly in a spacious high –tech pod on a bed of body temperature water containing 500 kgs of Epsom salts, in an environment devoid of sound and light, is an amazing experience. Free from distractions their brains pump out dopamine and endorphins while their body rests, de-stresses and heals. They discover that positivity is boosted and that it lasts for days afterwards. Now they are ‘smitten’! Just as I was the first time I floated over 30 years ago. Nowadays, I choose to float weekly for my own health and wellbeing. Give it a go, you won’t know till you try it out!

Matters by Dr Stuart Edser
Principal Psychologist at Newcastle Psychology & Health
Depression - The Way Through - Step 1
and people and life’s daily events. It keeps us shut away in our bedrooms or our living rooms. We stop going out, stop talking to people, stop socialising. Why? Because we don’t feel like it. It’s the ‘I don’t feel like it’ aspect that indicates demotivation. But we don’t get better or beat depression stuck in our bedrooms or our living rooms. We get better and beat depression out in the world, with others around us and in engaging life as it presents itself to us. It is out there that you discover happy times and pockets of laughter or an enjoyable meeting with a friend. These all serve to remind us that such things still exist and that we are still capable of experiencing them. On you way home from such experiences, there is invariably an, “I’m glad I went” feeling.
We have seen over the last two months that both isolation and disengagement are the two biggest factors that lead us deeper into depression. These two symptoms sum to what psychologists call, demotivation. I call it ‘going into the cave’. This means that if you are going to beat depression, you have to somehow deal with your demotivation. You have to come out of the cave.
We call activating your life in familiar patterns of places, people and events, acting despite your feelings. If you listen to the “I don’t feel like it” message, you will never do anything and thus deepen your depression. When you acknowledge your demotivation, ignore it and act despite your feelings, you are on the right path to feeling better.
Demotivation keeps us locked away from the world

TRAVEL Matters by Ian and Sue Roberts of Memorable Destination www.memorabledestination.com
Our first flight on a Dreamliner
We like window seats, so our first taste of the newgeneration Boeing 787 Dreamliner got off to a flying start. Our eyes were immediately drawn to the Dreamliner’s oversized windows, which are said to be as much as 30 percent bigger than usual. We got to experience the much-hyped carbon composite airliner during a recent flight with Scoot Airways from Sydney to Athens, Greece.
Our plane had slightly-wider-than-usual seats, good leg room and big overhead storage lockers that folded into the ceiling. But, the most noticeable thing is the quiet operation. The lack of noise is particularly noticable and is a big improvement over every other plane we’ve used. Other improvements are more subtle: like lower cabin altitude and higher humidity. An inbuilt humidifier improves air quality, with the aim of preventing skin from drying and allowing you to feel refreshed at the destination. To be honest, we didn’t emerge from the flight with the rosy complexion of a teenager, but that would be asking a lot! The LED lighting in the Dreamliner is also a striking. When it’s time to sleep, the lighting can mimic the night sky. But when passengers need to be awake, the cabin fills with a simulated sunrise. Apparently, the aim is to help keep your internal clock in sync and possibly minimise jet lag. We’ll let you know about that one. Lower Back Pain
Poor posture and sitting for long periods can weaken other spine and pelvis stabilizing muscles of the lower back and buttocks, which can force the QL muscle to constrict and tighten in an attempt to compensate for this loss of support in the lower back. Let’s say this scenario of muscle weakness and QL muscle compensation has been going on for a while in your lower back, unbeknownst to you. One day a mate asks you to help move a couch, you oblige and move the couch - no problem. But that night you begin experiencing a deep ache that might even be sharp in the lower back. It hurts to walk and stand up, and even rolling over in bed is painful. What happened? Well, the extra strain from lifting the couch has over loaded an already tight QL muscle in your lower back, which has caused it to go into spasm and become painful. Acupuncture and cupping are excellent soft tissue treatment approaches for relieving QL related lower back pain. These two therapies work to relieve QL muscle tension and pain by releasing painful knots called trigger points that build up in the muscle and cause it to become shortened, tight and painful
“I have put my back out!” This is a phrase we hear often and usually after a patient has lifted something heavy and awkward, bent over to pick something up, or has slept on a soft saggy mattress. In my experience this type of lower back pain is often related to a muscle called the Quadratus Lumborum, or the QL for short. The QL is a muscle that resides in the lower back on either side of the spine. It functions to stabilize the spine and pelvis but also helps you to stand up Ryan Samuels Registered Acupuncturist & Chinese straight, lift your hip, and bend sideways at the waist. Herbalist

Borrowing to build wealth
Building wealth can seem like an uphill battle when economic growth and interest rates are low. One way to take advantage of the current low interest rates and boost investment returns is to use a margin loan. A margin loan lets you borrow money to invest in a range of shares or managed funds, within the loan’s approved limit. You can leverage off your existing cash, shares, managed funds (or other assets approved by the lender) as the security, which offers you greater exposure to the investment markets. This can help boost returns because you have more money working for you. Depending on your individual circumstances, gearing can be a tax effective investment strategy because the borrowing costs may be deductible for the purpose of the investment income. However, margin loans will also magnify your losses in a market downturn. To get the most out of a gearing strategy with a margin loan, it is important to understand how the loan works and closely monitor the portfolio to manage the risks. You need to appreciate that a margin loan isn’t suitable for everyone and your financial adviser is best to advise you on this. Borrowing to invest should be a long-term strategy. This way, the market has time to produce the capital gains and investment income needed to provide you with a profit after repaying the margin loan plus interest. You may decide to use any dividends from the shares to pay down your loan as a way of further reducing risk. Margin loans also have tax advantages for investors when the interest expenses exceed the income derived from the investment, as investors can claim a deduction on those expenses. Depending on your individual circumstances, it may be advantageous to pre-pay interest up to 12 months in advance to bring the tax deductions forward. While some loans allow you to capitalise interest payments, that is not advised if you want to limit risk. The Lambton-New Lambton area is home to some of the strongest junior sports teams in the region including West Leagues Netball Club and Lambton Jaffas Junior Football Club. Thanks go to the coaches, managers and admistrators that make participating in junior sport in our local area so great. Without the time and enthusiasm invested by so may volunteers at the grassroots it wouldn’t be possible. Thanks!
