Interchange double take In what’s been hailed as a win for local motorists generally and John Hunter Hospital patients and staff in particular, the State Government has had a rethink and will construct a full traffic interchange as part of the final section of the Newcastle Inner City By-pass adjacent to John Hunter Hospital. Until now Roads & Maritime Services had only allowed for a half interchange, useable only by traffic arriving from and leaving to the north. In announcing the change of heart Minister for Health and Minister for Medical Research Brad Hazzard, said the additional $13 million for the second access to the Hospital builds on the $280 million already provided by the NSW Government to construct the fifth section of the 3.4km Newcastle Inner City Bypass
between Rankin Park and Jesmond. “The interchange will improve traffic flow across the western suburbs of Newcastle and connect key regional destinations, including Bennetts Green, Charlestown
and Jesmond shopping centres, John Hunter Hospital, University of Newcastle and the Pacific Highway,” Mr Hazzard said. “It will also establish an alternative (continued page 2)

The full interchange provides for additional access points, including as far south as the Central Coast and also from the Lower Hunter via the M1 and Hunter Expressway. RMS has undertaken extensive design and modelling for the final link of the Bypass. They will be releasing their plans in the near future. The John Hunter Hospital currently generates about 15,000 trips per day through the main entrance off Lookout Road, New Lambton. State Member for Wallsend, Ms Sonia Hornery MP has campaigned tirelessly for the funding of Stage 5 and pushed for the inclusion of a full interchange for many years. “I am so glad the Government has finally listened to the community and will deliver a complete interchange for the John Hunter Hospital.” Ms Hornery said.

Dear ‘The Local’
Pearl Box fundraiser We held our annual fundraiser in July, where we raised in excess of $3,000 which will be donated to the John Hunter neurological research team. In addition to this the 110 residents at the nursing home where my wife Pearl has been now for over 7 years will each get a Christmas present. It wouldn’t have been possible without the wonderful support and co-operation of the Mark Hotel and the contributions of a lot of the Lambton shops, in particular order, Jarretts Quality Meats, Simpsons Shoes, Lambton TAB, Jenda Collection, Lambton Newsagency, Lizottes, The Lambton Barber Shop, Lambton Tasty Bake, Woolford Jewellers, Lambton Grocer, Lambton Fruit Market, Piggotts Pharmacy and The Lambton Fridge. A very big thank you to all of those businesses.

Bede’s are best once again...
It will come as no surprise to their regular customers but now everyone knows that the best sausages in Newcastle and the Hunter are at Jarrett’s Quality Meats Lambton. Bede and the team at Jarrett’s in Elder Street took out first place in the Traditional Australian Beef category at the regional final of the Australian Meat Industry Council’s ‘Sausage King’ awards recently. To that win they also added two second places; one in the Gourmet category with their ‘Morning After’ snag and another in the Poultry section with their Cheesy Chicken Bratwurst offering. The first place result is the third time in the last four years that they have picked up this prestigious crown.
Winners are grinners; the team from Jarrett’s Quality Meats in Lambton (L to R) Callan Webb, Carly Waddell and Bede Jarrett are now looking ahead to the Sausage King NSW & ACT finals later this month “The recipe we use for the traditional sausage was shared with Bede more than 20 years ago by a butcher who had been making sausages himself for 40 years.” Cal Webb told Lambton & New Lambton Local. “Consistency and the freshest ingredients are the keys. That’s all I can say” Cal added. As regional winners Jarrett’s Quality Meats will go up against the best in NSW and the ACT in the state finals in Tamworth later this month. Good luck to Bede and the team!

Meet the candidates for
Councillor in Ward 3
Four groups of candidates have nominated for the position of Councillor (Ward 3) at the upcoming City of Newcastle election to be held on Saturday 9 September. Lambton & New Lambton Local invited the lead candidate from each group to tell our readers something about themselves and their vision for Council if elected. Their responses appear on these pages in the same order that they will appear on the ballot paper as determined by the Electoral Commission of NSW
Declan Clausen Labor
Councillor Declan Clausen was elected to represent Ward 3 on Newcastle City Council in February 2015. Declan is Newcastle’s youngest Councillor, and as a member of the Newcastle Labor team has delivered significant improvements to Ward 3 and Newcastle.
This record includes being the only Ward 3 Councillor to vote in support of upgrades to Lambton Park that delivered the new walkway, play equipment and Kerrai Creek improvements; delivered road and traffic improvements including intersection upgrades along Howe St; championed the delivery of new cycleways and protection of the current cycle link between Wallsend and the City through Jesmond Park; protected local parks from sale; and progressed plans for upgrades to Lambton Pool and New Lambton Library. In 2015, Declan said if elected a key focus for him would be clearing the $90 million infrastructure backlog inherited from the McCloy-era Council. This backlog has been significantly reduced through a doubling of Council’s annual infrastructure spend, delivering improvements to roads, buildings and footpaths across the City. If re-elected Declan and the Newcastle Labor team will fight to continue the Ward 3 upgrades, including completion of the main street public domain improvements in Elder St; delivery of a new fenced dog-off leash area in Lambton; and prioritisation of footpath delivery in North Lambton, Waratah and Waratah West. Declan grew up in Ward 3 and has a background in engineering. Acknowledging his long-standing community activism, Declan was named Newcastle’s Young Citizen of the Year in 2013; and was the University of Newcastle’s WiL Student of the Year in 2014. Declan was School Captain of Lambton High School in 2010, and lives in Waratah with his partner and puppy. __________________

Thomas Levick The Greens
“We must confront the increasing pressures on the most vulnerable in our community – First Nations people, students, elderly, disabled, the working poor and unemployed. Neoliberalism has decidedly failed, and it is the Greens who offer genuine solutions to the problems we now face. Unity and diversity are our greatest strengths, and the Greens celebrate this. As a Councillor, I will support responsible and sustainable initiatives that are equitable for all in our growing city. We plan to confront the issues too long abused as political weapons by established parties, such as transport, infrastructure and public services. As part of our War on Waste we will finally ban the bag, and work to make Newcastle Council carbon neutral. The Greens have always led on climate change and environmental justice, enabling local innovation and strengthening our communities, and I will continue this proud work here in Newcastle. I work and study at the University of Newcastle, I’m in my final year of Geography. I also work at National Parks & Wildlife, and volunteer as regional coordinator for Beyond Zero Emissions, a
renewable energy think-tank aiming to pave the way for a more sustainable future. These opportunities have given me great insight into the direction communities, institutions and governments must take in order to secure a better future for us all. I have a passion and a penchant for city planning and community development , I’m a great listener and advocate for those of us ignored by the political establishment, and as a young First Nations person am particularly aware of the key social issues in our communities. If elected to Council, I will fight for the public good and ensure local issues are given the attention they deserve. Our strength is in unity and diversity. “

Meet the candidates for

We invited each of them to tell our readers something about themselves and their vision for Council if elected. Rod Holding Independent
I’ve lived in the Hunter Valley for thirty years and Newcastle for seven years.(continued next page)
Lambton & New Lambton Local > September 2017 > Page 17
(from previous page) I have had many occupations and currently I’m a removalist, this job keeps me fit and most days provide different challengers to complete. For me the issues are, what are the jobs going to be for children in the future when the world’s changing so quickly. Can we save our biosphere from collapse as global warming takes hold, is the toxic overload across the planet reversible and will nuclear war be averted? Infrastructure needs building to transition Newcastle into a sustainable energy future but resources are being squandered by a revolving door of stupid, greedy politicians, bureaucrats and developers. Orica’s huge explosive storage dump is threatening to blow Newcastle to smithereens at any moment while Williamstown’s water contamination scandal is ignored. Newcastle has a secretive council not consulting with the community while bulldozing through a corrupt state government agenda. I will work toward solutions as part of our community.
Kath Elliott Independent
Kath Elliott is a local business woman standing with the Newcastle Independents.
Kath campaigned against the Labor/Greens’ 46.9% rate rise in the Ward 3 by election, and is still concerned about its impact on Newcastle families. Kath will vote to cap the rates to CPI, easing cost pressures on families, and advocate for independence in Council. “There is no place for party politics in local government. Councillors need to do what is best for their communities and get on with the job of delivering services and infrastructure,” she said. Kath is former President of Lambton High School P&C, introduced the Newcastle Fare Free Bus Zone and Newcastle Livesites in 2006 when CEO of the Newcastle Alliance. She was a board member of Newcastle’s Tantrum Theatre, and is a member of the interview panel for medical students at Newcastle University. Kath is a board member of Huntlee Academy, Women Sport Australia and Disabled Wintersports Australia. Kath holds a Bachelor of Arts and an Advanced Diploma in Business Management. She is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Kath wrote the first community consultation strategy for Newcastle City Council after changes to the NSW Local Government Act in 1993.

Ron Brown Independent
Traffic Engineer and Transport Planner for Northern Transport Planning and Engineering established by Ron and Libby Brown in 1992. Resigned from Roads and Traffic Authority in 1992 as Regional Transport Planner having worked for DMR/RTA for 22 years. Professional experience included road construction and maintenance work in Walgett, Mittagong and Sydney. Local community work with South Wallsend Public School, Elermore Vale Community Centre, Elermore Vale Carols By Candlelight, Mattara Festival, King St Fair. Engaged with Newcastle City Centre Business Community for 20 years. President Newcastle Hunter Valley Folk Club for 10 years. Concerned that the planning process for Light Rail in the CBD has been inadequate and control over future use of the rail corridor must effectively rest with Council and the local Community. Transport needs for the rest of the Newcastle Council area also require careful attention and Council needs to engage with
the new Private Public Transport Service provider to ensure that the of the surrounding suburban areas and neighbouring Councils are developed and improved. Aged Care and Youth Services are a high priority throughout the Council area with facilities to be improve as identified to meet needs of the Community.
Nuatali Nelmes Labor
Nuatali Nelmes has been the Lord Mayor of Newcastle for almost 3 years, and leads the Newcastle Labor team on Council. Nuatali holds a Bachelor of Business with a double major in industrial relations/human resource management and marketing from the University of Newcastle, and worked in small business and recruitment before being elected to Council in 2008. Throughout her time on Council, Nuatali has championed the revitalisation of Newcastle’s coastline including Bathers Way; and worked to protect and improve vital Council services such as Blackbutt Reserve, pools and libraries, to provide all Novocastrians with equitable access to high-quality public facilities.
Nuatali is proud to have overseen record infrastructure investment into Newcastle, as well as record development application approvals (more than $2 Billion in the last two years), which stimulates the local economy and creates jobs throughout the City. Nuatali is Newcastle’s second female Lord Mayor after popular 1970s-era Labor Lord Mayor Joy Cummings, and is the youngest Lord Mayor of Newcastle. Nuatali was raised and educated in Newcastle, is married with three children and has enjoyed a representative sporting career in basketball. If re-elected, Nuatali and the Newcastle Labor team will continue the economic transformation and revitalisation of Newcastle; fighting for an integrated public transport network including an expansion of Light Rail by completing planning work to connect light rail to Broadmeadow, the University and John Hunter; completing flood mitigation works in Wallsend; improve parks, footpaths and green spaces; realise the benefits of major sporting and tourist events such as Supercars; and maintaining local services and hard-fought financial sustainability. Under Nuatali’s leadership, the Newcastle Labor led Council has a comprehensive, fully costed Long Term Financial Plan endorsed by IPART, and achieved financial Fit for the Future status.
Stephen O’Brien Socialist Alliance
I spent ten years working in the Newcastle steelworks, and when I could see change was coming I retrained and studied so that I could be qualified to work in the TAFE sector. Given this background I understand and support Newcastle’s need to renew and reimagine itself as the world changes. However, I am concerned that aspects of this process are detrimental to Newcastle’s people and identity. For example, running light rail down Hunter Street, the Supercars race, the loss of live music venues and the proposal to bulldoze The Store building. Newcastle could do better if we had a council that actually listened and genuinely consulted with the population. Council needs to be more people focused and less compliant with the demands of developers. We deserve a council oriented toward community need, not developer greed. I am a Newcastle East resident David Compton is the Liberal and am standing for Lord Mayor. Party candidate for Lord Mayor. I am also running for Ward one He declined our invitation to councillor with Sam Ashby, who (continued over page) contribute here.

Some of the achievements which I am most proud of are the rollout of council’s cycleway network; a council-funded program for community arts development; saving key western lands from inappropriate development; persistently promoting openness, transparency and accountability, getting council to join the Climate Council’s Cities Power Partnership and improving climate change initiatives. The Greens team on council will strongly press for all planning powers to return to Newcastle. Let’s return decisions about Newcastle to the people of Newcastle! That was then, this is now Croudace’s Paddock
The Scottish Australian Mining Company, owner of the Lambton colliery, was pivotal in the establishment of three of Newcastle’s finest recreation reserves – Lambton Park, Blackbutt Reserve, and Jesmond Park. Although not officially dedicated until 1924, the Jesmond Park site had a long history of recreational use. From the earliest days, this low-lying area at the northern extremity of the company’s mining lease, with Dark Creek running through it, was used for competitive pigeon shooting. It soon also became a popular picnic site, known as “Croudace’s Paddock” presumably because the permission of Thomas Croudace, the colliery manager, was needed to use the area. Churches, schools and community groups regularly held picnics there, sometimes with hundreds of attendees. The site was within easy walking distance of Lambton, North Lambton and Jesmond. It became even more accessible when the Newcastle to Wallsend tramway was constructed in 1887. Around this time, the idyllic bushland nature of the picnic site was altered somewhat with the establishment of

Campion’s soap and tallow works adjacent to Dark Creek. As early as 1908, Lambton Council and local residents began petitioning the Lands Department to have the area formally set aside as a public park. Their efforts were rewarded in 1923, when Frederick Croudace (son of Thomas) as manager of the colliery, gifted to the council the 22 acres of land that became Jesmond Park. Even before the park was officially acquired, the Jesmond Cricket Club was asking permission to lay a wicket, and the park soon became a popular venue for other sports such as football and soccer. A tennis court was constructed in the northeast corner of the park in 1925, and a new Jesmond Park tram stop, in line with Steel St, was opened in 1926. In 1938, control of Jesmond Park passed from Lambton Council to the newly formed Greater Newcastle Council, who maintain the park to this day. On the School Development Day our teachers undertook high quality training to support our strategic priority Staff and Leader Learning: to build greater capacity by leading and inspiring a school culture of collaborative, continuous learning for the 21st century; through the implementation of effective teacher and leader professional learning. This was a combined day with Newcastle High School as well as some school leaders from across the region. It started with Professor Yong Zhao’s keynote address on World Class Learners. He was highly entertaining and engaging and he challenged our thinking on the way the education system prepares students for the future. His emphasis to succeed in the global economy requires students to function as entrepreneurs, and be resourceful, independent thinkers, flexible and creative. He suggested schools need to rethink the delivery of the curriculum, assessment and pedagogy to allow greater student voice and autonomy in their learning. Teachers then moved into cross-school faculty workshops on: • Future Learning in Action, presented by Ms Marija Glabus and Mrs Angela Cohen • Learning: Its Personal, presented by Mr Michael Saxon, Principal of Liverpool Boys High • Learning Intentions and Success Criteria, presented by Mrs Josie Bailey, Principal School Leadership While executive staff from across the Newcastle Network worked with Professor Zhao in new paradigms. Faculty workshops after lunch were designed to allow teachers time for the development of inquiry based learning tasks so every teacher will deliver an IBL task with every class at least once a year. While an instructional leaders masterclass was held with Professor Zhao. Through the implementation of effective teacher and leader professional learning we strive to build greater capacity in the Lambton High School educational community by leading and inspiring a school culture of collaborative, continuous learning for the 21st century. Special thanks Mrs Julie FitzSimons, and Mrs Quinn Robertson and Mrs Naomi Durie (from Newcastle High), for coordinating this outstanding professional learning. Martin Rosser - Principal
What’s my story?
This month we begin a new monthly feature What’s my story? where locals get to tell their story. We begin with the story of a young woman who has big dreams for herself and the women of Nepal...
Asmita Sharma from New Lambton has big dreams of helping Nepalese women through childbirth and curbing the mortality rate, but she needs the community’s help to get there. The 18-year-old Lambton High School student, herself from a remote village in Nepal, has seen first-hand the impact of isolation and poverty on the health of women and children, and she wants to do something about it. The Lambton High Year 12 student hopes to upskill herself by studying a Bachelor of Nursing at the University of Newcastle next year, before returning to Nepal to use her knowledge where she feels it is sorely needed. “The women’s health situation in rural Nepal is pathetic,” she said. “Every day, more than four mothers die of pregnancy and childbirth-related complications.” Ms Sharma says that a culture of marriage and childbirth at a young age restricts women’s access to education and services. “The accessibility of trained nurses at the time of childbirth is very rare,” she said.
“Typically, the daughters are given away through arranged marriages well before they can realise their dreams of education and claim anything for their future. “As they are sent to the husband’s house, they are trapped in the tragic culture where daughters-in-law are expected to give birth but not to speak out and demand anything they want.” The statistics speaks for themselves. 2015 figures show that for every 100,000 live births, 258 women die. Up to 90 per cent of those deaths occur in a rural setting. “My studies in nursing will be very critical,” Ms Sharma said. “It is my profound dream that I will not be limited to serving mothers in person but also be focused on creating a mass of nurses and midwives saving mothers during pregnancy and childbirth in rural villages of Nepal.” Ms Sharma’s dream is not just restricted to using medical knowledge however, but looking to create the infrastructure and educational resources for longterm change. “I would like to establish maternal waiting homes for those mothers living in hard-to-reach mountains and hill districts of Nepal,” she said. “The mothers will be brought in to the waiting homes a week before they go into labour to ensure there are skilled attendants at the birth. “I would like to establish a functional birthing centre and a training centre for the rural nurses to have short-term training and graduate in Rural Nursing and Midwifery. “Lastly, I would like to establish a community FM radio station to educate and entertain local people.” In order for this to happen Ms Sharma first needs to complete her degree as an international student, but at the moment does not have the necessary financial resources so is seeking assistance to complete her studies. Anyone wishing to offer ideas or support, or seek more information, can contact Ms Sharma via email at asmita2056@hotmail.com. ___________________________ Do you know a local with an unique and interesting story to tell? HEALTH Matters with Sara Knight of The Gut Clinic
Gut health basics
It is easy to take advantage of or even disregard the health of your gut and digestive system. That is until something goes wrong. Reflux, bloating, cramping, diarrhoea and/or constipation cause not only discomfort but can also affect a person’s quality of life. Minimising certain foods, lack of sleep and avoiding social situations are a common result of digestive issues. Let alone the pain, discomfort, frustration and even tears! The health of your gut though is more than just a comfortable belly. Gut health is also linked to if not influencing: • Healthy mood • Skin problems • Immune strength and function • Cognition and mental acuity • Energy levels What causes an unhealthy gut? There are a few factors and diet is one of the most important. For optimal gut health, I suggest eating a diet that is low in inflammatory foods such as wheat, dairy, sugar and processed foods; whilst high in healing foods such as saurkrauts, kefirs, and kombuchas. Other factors to consider include • Chronic stress levels • Gut bacteria - Processed foods, antibiotic use, and lack of prebiotic foods (those that feed the probiotics or microflora) are all common contributors to poor gut bacteria. • Toxins and parasites The health of your gut is not simply about your digestive system. Gut health impacts the health and functioning of your whole body. If you are suffering, get help as soon as possible. Not only for your gut but for your overall health and well-being.

LAW

When should I review or update my Will?
So you have a Will but when should you review it? Generally whenever there is a significant change in your personal circumstances. That may because your assets have changed in type or in value. You may have joined or left a superannuation fund and or you may have received a windfall which may mean certain beneficiaries in your Will receive a larger or smaller proportion of your estate than you intend. If you dispose of property which you have specifically gifted to someone in your will you should review your Will because the beneficiary of that property will very likely receive nothing. Starting a business involves a consideration of the particular business structure which is appropriate but different structures have very different affects in relation to how the business assets are able to be dealt with upon the person’s death. When there is a change in personal relationships it is very important to reconsider your Will and gifting provisions. Wills are automatically revoked by marriage with some limited exceptions. Divorce usually results in a partial revocation of the will, with any provision not related to the former spouse remaining in operation. Aside from situations involving marriage or divorce, starting a new relationship or ending a relationship usually means that an earlier will is out of date and will not reflect the likely testamentary intentions of the person. Becoming a parent necessitates a review of your Will, particularly as the children get older and the potential impacts of superannuation benefits becomes more of a consideration. Other circumstances which might warrant a review of your will are when a spouse dies, when you become a grandparent or when a person appointed in your Will such as an executor or guardian dies or can no longer act in that position. In any event you should review your will every 3-5 years to make sure it accords with your wishes as to how you want your assets dealt with when the time comes. Have you ever been away on a holiday and lived the life of fun and pleasure? Perhaps it was 5 Star all the way for you or maybe you backpacked with pure abandon and freedom. Most of us try and pack as much activity as we possibly can into our holiday days; we also look forward to our holiday ahead of going away to the point where we don’t really focus on anything else other than ‘I’m going on holiday and I can’t wait’! Then departure day arrives and off you go - yet before you know it, you’re back home, and possibly feeling a little flat and uninspired. If you do, you are not alone - this is such a common feeling it is often referred to as ‘post holiday blues’ (well now that’s original!). So how can you shift these feelings? Lots of people try to just carry on and hope they will subside or allow life’s duties (e.g. school activities, work and family commitments) to take over and essentially camouflage the negative feelings of being flat and dull. It may sound strange, but I’d like to offer that it’s OK to feel flat and dull. Our lives are not meant to be all up, fun loving and super positive. We really are meant to experience the highs and the lows, the ebbs and flows of physical and mental energy changes. The challenge is how we handle these changes. Difficulties arise when we fight these feelings, rather than accepting it is what it is…. for now. One of my favourite sayings is “this too will pass”. Everything passes… everything. The discomfort, the boredom, the lethargy, the euphoria, the joy. It is a constantly moving, ever changing shift of feelings, emotions and bodily sensations. To practice self-acceptance with non-attachment, nonjudgment of self can sometimes be challenging. This is where yoga can be helpful. In yoga it is not just about stretching your body into postures and holding them. It is actually about connecting your awareness to your body and mind through breath awareness. This allows you to move into a space of acceptance of yourself and others without being competitive or comparing. Yoga can help you to feel really good, physically and emotionally, alleviating stress and anxiety, even after just one class!

medical professional such as a doctor, optometrist or specialist • free treatment and accommodation when you’re a public patient in a public hospital • 75% of your treatment and procedure costs when you’re a private patient in a public or private hospital (not including accommodation fees and other costs) • reduced costs for prescription medications in some cases. How much is it? For most eligible taxpayers, the levy is currently charged at 2% of their taxable income. However, the government has proposed to increase this rate to 2.5%. If this legislation is passed, it will take effect in July 2019. When do you pay it? If you’re required to pay the Medicare Levy, it’s automatically calculated against your taxable income when you lodge your yearly tax return. You can use the Medical Levy Calculator on the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) website to work out how much you can expect to pay. Is anyone exempt? If you’re single and your taxable income was below $21,655 for the 2016–17 financial year (or $34,244 if you’re a single senior or pensioner entitled to the seniors and pensioners tax offset), then you don’t have to pay the Medicare Levy. For families, you’ll be exempt from the Medicare Levy if your 2016–17 household income was below $36,541 (or $47,670 for eligible seniors and pensioners), plus $3,356 for each dependent child or student. What is the Medicare Levy Surcharge? If you don’t have the appropriate level of private hospital insurance, you may be charged an extra amount on top of the 2% levy. This is called the Medical Levy Surcharge (MLS) and only applies if your taxable income is over $90,000 for singles or $180,000 for families. The MLS can range from an additional 1% to 1.5% depending on your income level. You can see a full breakdown of thresholds and rates on the ATO website. What if you have private cover? If you have an acceptable level of private hospital insurance, you won’t be charged the MLS. But first, you’ll need to provide information about your private health cover payments on your tax return. Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is an extremely common form of arthritis. It occurs when cartilage (the flexible shock absorbing tissue found at the end of bones and inside joints) begins to deteriorate over time. As it deteriorates, the cartilage fails to provide cushioning between the ends of the bones that meet inside the joint, which can result in damaged bone endings and pain inside the joint. Any joint in the body can be affected by osteoarthritis but typically the knee, hip, lower back, neck and joints of the hand are most affected. When a joint is affected sufferers can experience: local joint pain, stiffness, tenderness, swelling, loss of mobility, and symptoms that can be affected by changes in the weather.
Traditional Chinese medicine views osteoarthritis as a “bi syndrome”, meaning that it is caused by a blockage that prevents circulation of blood and nutrients to the affected joint. Overtime this blockage can result in the weakening and deterioration of the joint which leads to local joint pain and stiffness. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine focus on removing the obstruction to the joint and promoting circulation so that the joint can receive the nourishment it requires. With this treatment approach the joint pain, inflammation, and stiffness can be relieved, and the joint health and strength can be increased. We must keep in mind these treatment approaches are reactive to the condition as there is no cure for osteoarthritis, however acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are effective natural options that help manage osteoarthritis and help limit flare ups and the further progression of the condition. Having osteoarthritis does not necessarily mean that the person must be resigned to pain and suffering steps can be taken to minimize or prevent symptoms. The key to living with a condition such as this is to take steps towards healthy management through exercise, lifestyle changes, and therapies which relieve symptoms and help manage the condition. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine are certainly worth considering as part of this routine. Ryan Samuels Registered Acupuncturist & Chinese Herbalist

Styling your garden for sale
You’ve repainted the lounge room, plumped the pillows and decluttered everything within an inch of its life. Your much cherished home is finally ready to be put on the market. But is your garden? With our busy lives, we often don’t spend as much time outside as we’d like, so its all too easy to neglect the yard. Gardens, however, are a major attractant for potential buyers. Spend some time sprucing yours up and your street appeal will soar.
Whether your garden is small or large, it offers a space for leisure time and family living. Remember, you’re not just selling a house but a lifestyle, and attractive outdoor areas are the best way to sell that to others. A much loved garden which is well cared for tells others that they too will enjoy spending time here. By contrast, an overgrown lawn and weed-infested beds carry an air of neglect that will taint how the home’s interior is perceived. Potential buyers will wonder what else has been allowed to go to seed. Basic maintenance goes a long way. Get out there yourself or hire a gardener to mow lawns, weed flower beds and prune any hedges and trees that are getting a bit shaggy. Unless you’re under water restrictions, now is not the time to skimp on the sprinklers. Give your lawn lots of water so it’s green and hydrated. If garden beds are looking bare, invest in some quick flowering plants. Larger plants in feature pots are ideal for providing fast decor or hiding ugly pipework. As a bonus, you can take them with you to your new home. Any plants that are obviously on their way out, with browning leaves or withered stalks, should be pulled out completely. Styling a garden for sale can be a very rewarding experience if you start early and take your time. You might even come up with some inspiration you can take with you to your new house!

Depression hurdles -disengagement
In my August article, I talked about ‘going into the cave’. That was about isolation, which will often be the gateway experience to let depression feelings in. But isolation is not the only thing that happens in the cave. The other big thing is disengagement. When we go into the cave, we start to unplug, to disengage from the world around us, from the people with whom we usually interact and the experiences we might

engage. I just stop doing these things. I start saying no to invitations. I don’t bother with my hobbies or interests. Now all these things are the things that, when not depressed, usually bring me joy. They give me a sense of happiness and connection and purpose. But when we unplug, it is certain we lose those positives. This disengagement opens the door to one of the most common depression symptoms of all. Psychologists call it anhedonia: the inability to enjoy the things that I usually do to bring me joy. If I garden, I stop gardening because I feel I don’t enjoy it. If I play the guitar, I stop playing it because I feel I don’t enjoy it. If I like reading, I stop reading, because I feel that I won’t enjoy it. If I am going to beat depression, I have to beat disengagement and anhedonia. When I come out of the cave, I have to start to plug back in again, to begin doing some of the things I used to enjoy that would normally bring me joy, connection or purpose. Staying in the cave disengaged is guaranteed to keep you depressed. Coming out and re-engaging gives the potential for rediscovering some happy thoughts and feelings. We have our own list of travel gadgets that make life on the road easier. • Portable digital scales. With excess baggage fees today, these scales are essential. Hook them to your bag handle and lift the luggage for an LED weight read-out. • An all-in-one powerpoint adapter. After years to carrying one for European powerpoints and another for the US, we were thrilled when all-in-one devices appeared. • Power bank. We usually travel with at least two iPads, two smartphones and two wifi cameras, so having a back-up power charger is more than handy. • It’s almost a hotel truism that there are never enough powerpoints in your room. Consider a multi adapter, which usually combine power points, USB points and a surge protector. • Bags may have individual locks, but we keep hearing about people who have lost their entire luggage on ferries or buses. So we take a retractable cable lock with a 90 cm steel cable for wrapping around a pole or rack. • Becoming fed up with unreliable hotel wifi, we adapted an old Apple Express music player to serve as a travel router and plug into high speed internet cables. VET Chat by Dr Fiona Wallace of New Lambton Veterinary Clinic
Dental care of your pets
August was Dental Month at the Vet Clinic and we have been busy scaling, polishing, X-raying, and where necessary extracting teeth and stitching gums all month. Periodontal disease is the most common health problem that we see in practice and it is estimated that by the age of two, 80% of dogs and 70% of cats have periodontal disease. It’s painful, progressive and often goes unnoticed by owners.
Surprising new advice from our dentistry specialists is that to clean our pets’ teeth we should not be feeding bones, which can lead to serious slab fractures and chipping of teeth. Instead, brushing at least several times a week is recommended. Bad breath can be a sign of serious health problems, which start as calcified plaque build-up on the teeth but can end up with periodontal disease, chronic pain and infection. Calculus (calcified plaque) erodes under the gum margin and contains many species of bacteria which cause local inflammation and pain. If you have noticed that your pet has bad breath, frequently paws at his face, is reluctant to eat hard food or has discoloured teeth and inflamed gums, it is time to get a check-up. With luck you have caught the process early enough, and we may be able to give you a toothbrush and dog/cat flavoured toothpaste to clean your pet’s teeth, but unfortunately most of the time we don’t see patients until they require a general anaesthetic and ultrasonic scale. The worst mouths require partial or full mouth extractions, which is scary and confronting, but in fact will make your pet a lot more comfortable and won’t actually stop them from eating dry food! If this is not for you and your pet, advanced veterinary dental and periodontal care is available by referral in Sydney.

PHARMACY
Matters by Brett Plumb Pharmacist at Piggott’s Pharmacy Lambton
Need more sleep? You must be dreaming
It seems we are never satisfied with the amount of sleep we get. We either don’t get enough and wake up tired, or we get too much and wake up feeling sluggish. Just how much sleep we need is subject to debate but the National Sleep Foundation has explored how many hours of sleep your body needs at different ages. Interestingly, sleep needs vary across ages and are especially affected by your lifestyle and your general health. This means there is no easy answer to how much sleep you may need and to determine the right amount it’s important to assess not only
where you fall on the “sleep needs spectrum,” but also to examine what lifestyle factors are affecting the quality and quantity of your sleep such as work schedules and stress. To get the sleep you need, you must look at the big picture. Research has found that in general, newborns need 12-18 hours of sleep a day, infants 14-15 hours, toddlers 12-14 hours, preschoolers 11-13 hours, school-age children 10-11 hours, teens 8.5-9.25 hours, and adults 7-9 hours. Healthy adults have a basal sleep need of seven to eight hours every night, but where things get complicated is the interaction between the basal need and sleep debt. For instance, you might meet your basal sleep need on any single night or a few nights in a row, but still have an unresolved sleep debt that may make you feel more sleepy and less alert at times, particularly in conjunction with circadian dips, those times in the 24-hour cycle when we are biologically programmed to be more sleepy and less alert, such as overnight hours and mid-afternoon. You may feel overwhelmingly sleepy quite suddenly at these times, shortly before bedtime or feel sleepy upon awakening. The good news is that some research suggests that the accumulated sleep debt can be worked down or “paid off”However, if you feel you have a sleep disorder you should seek professional help, and your local pharmacy or GP is a great place to start. Little Locals... Western Suburbs Schoolboy Rugby League Under 11/1’s played an important final at Kentish No 1, New Lambton recently. The Rosellas played strongly again this season recording 9 wins from the 14 home and away rounds. They underlined that with two minor semifinal wins. They accounted for Belmont North and Central Charlestown over consecutive weekends in August. This brought them to the Grand Final qualifier where they met the Valentine Eleebana Red Devils. Valentine were the victors when the two teams met in last year’s Under 10’s decider. But only one could make this year’s Grand Final. Who would it be? Wests began the game strongly putting on two tries in a matter of minutes. Valentine found their rhythm and hit back mid way through the first stanza. Wests led for most of the first half
JUNIORS in SPORT
Harry hits his stride with plenty of teammates in support and looked to be the stronger side. On the stroke of half-time the visitors hit back to draw the scores level at 16-all. As the teams regrouped a close result seemed likely. Valentine sprang out of the blocks in the second half putting on a number of unanswered tries.

weight of possession in Valentine’s favour called for a big defensive effort from the locals. Wests never gave up but Valentine eventually ran out winners 38-16. The Rosellas’ season ended just one week earlier than planned. They can be proud of the season they played.
