Interchange double take In what’s been hailed as a win for local motorists generally and John Hunter Hospital patients and staff in particular, the State Government has had a rethink and will construct a full traffic interchange as part of the final section of the Newcastle Inner City By-pass adjacent to John Hunter Hospital. Until now Roads & Maritime Services had only allowed for a half interchange, useable only by traffic arriving from and leaving to the north. In announcing the change of heart Minister for Health and Minister for Medical Research Brad Hazzard, said the additional $13 million for the second access to the Hospital builds on the $280 million already provided by the NSW Government to construct the fifth section of the 3.4km Newcastle Inner City Bypass

between Rankin Park and Jesmond. “The interchange will improve traffic flow across the western suburbs of Newcastle and connect key regional destinations, including Bennetts Green, Charlestown

and Jesmond shopping centres, John Hunter Hospital, University of Newcastle and the Pacific Highway,” Mr Hazzard said. “It will also establish an alternative (continued page 2)
