Kelly Miller, President & CEO | Visit Huntington Beach“The reason I live in this paradise called Surf City USA is because of the beautiful beaches, warm sand, and plenty of tall, green palm trees…ocean breezes keeping the city cool and permeating the air with the sweet smells of the ocean mixed with the hint of smoke from one of our many beach barbecuing pits.” — Dean Torrance, one half of the popular 1960s surf music duo Jan and Dean, whose classic tunes like “Surf City” and “Ride the Wild Surf” reflect Southern California’s iconic surf culture.

With over 70 parks and playgrounds in Huntington Beach, get back to nature with a leisurely walk, challenging hike, relaxing picnic, or, better yet, a welldeserved afternoon siesta.
| BY MARCIE TAYLOR STEPHANIE HELGUERAWhether you want to chill through a nature trail or get the wiggles out of kids at a playground, Surf City USA has immense greenery for you. Here’s a snapshot of the city’s magical outdoor spaces:
The largest city-owned park in Orange County, Huntington Beach Central Park (18002 Goldenwest St., Huntington Beach) covers over 350 acres of land and o ers endless fun (a slice of New York albeit its Central Park spans 843 acres). In the summer, theatregoers can enjoy a free outdoor concert series at the amphitheater while kids can get dirty from throwback games in Adventure Playground. Architecture bu s will take note of the stunning late-modern design of Huntington Beach Library, designed by Richard Neutra’s son Dion and completed in 1975.
Tucked behind the library, one can go on a meditative walk along the Secret Garden, which was built to showcase drought tolerant plants and provide a moment of se -
renity for those who visit (and a great spot for bird watching). Over on Central Park West, more adventure awaits: a dog park, disc golf course, equestrian center, a senior center, a lake for fishing, and Kathy May’s Lakeview Café.
Kids will discover one of the best playground structures in the city and not your typical slide-and-swing combo. There are three-dimensional climbing structures, rope bridges, and zip lines (think American Ninja Warrior). For younger children, there’s a toddler playground with baby swings and a teeter-totter, with a nice view of the lake.
Another park for kids is the pirate-themed Huntington Beach All Inclusive Playground (913 Pacific Coast Hwy., Huntington Beach), which is designed to be all-inclusive and promote interactive play for children of all abilities. It features a rubber surface that complies with the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) and equipment that allows wheelchairs. The playground can
be accessed from existing pathways from parking areas and the beach path.
Named after Orange County’s first female supervisor, Harriett M. Weider Regional Park (19251 Seapoint Ave., Huntington Beach) sits on four acres of land with nature trails and native plants abound. Get a view of the oil field and parts of the Bolsa Chica Wetlands, with the Pacific Ocean in the distance. Playground equipment for older and younger kids, as well as free workout equipment, is available.
Finally, relish the sights, smells, and sounds of countryside living at the Shipley Nature Center (17851 Goldenwest St., Huntington Beach), a charming place where one can imagine life in Huntington Beach over a century ago. Go bird watching and wander self-guided trails to find freshwater ponds, stately oak trees, and, come spring, brilliant orange California Poppies.
SACRED WETLANDS
Wetland habitats are important to the environment, serving essential functions in an ecosystem, including acting as water filters, providing flood and erosion control, and furnishing food and homes for fish and wildlife. Huntington Beach is home to several wetlands that are perfect for walking and getting close to nature.
The Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve (bolsachica.org) is the largest saltwater marsh along the coast of California and the most well-known local wetlands. The 1,300-acre region includes five miles of trails and tons of bird watching opportunities. Make sure you stop o at the Bolsa Chica Wetlands Interpretive Center (3842 Warner Ave., Huntington Beach) to learn more about the area. You'll also find trail access from a parking lot on the inland side of Pacific Coast Highway, a mile south of Warner Avenue across from the entrance to Bolsa Chica State Beach. Both locations o er
free limited parking for nature enthusiasts. Tours of the wetlands are also given by different conservation groups: Amigos de Bolsa Chica and Bolsa Chica Land Trust.
Magnolia Marsh is located between Magnolia Street and the Huntington Beach Energy Project. Re-creation of the historical marsh channels and restoration of full tidal influence were completed in 2010, and a raised observation deck now extends out over a tidal pond.
Talbert Marsh o ers the public a multipurpose trail on approximately 25 acres from Brookhurst Street to the Santa Ana River Trail. Around 90 species of birds have been observed at Talbert Marsh. In addition to year-round residents, thousands of birds use the Huntington wetlands as a rest stop during their long migrations along the Pa-

BIKING
Beach cruising is certainly a huge part of the Huntington Beach culture. There’s nothing easier or more fun than renting a classic beach cruiser and enjoying the many miles of bike path along the Huntington Beach coastline. This incredible trail literally hugs the coast the entire way and is completely flat.
If you have any kind of ailment or are just trying to get into shape, then electric biking is the way to go. Electric bikes allow you all the pleasures of beach cruising, yet they are a lot easier on your legs (there are also many places to rent one throughout the city).

RECREATION
PICKLEBALL
It all started in 1965 when two dads (and U.S. Congressmen) Bill Bell and Joel Pritchard invented the game on Bainbridge Island in Washington state. Named after Pritchard’s family dog, Pickles, the backyard game has since become an increasingly favored family sport across America.
O ering a fresh take on one of Surf City USA’s favorite words (“paddle”), pickleball combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong; it’s played with a graphite paddle and wi le ball on a badminton-size court. With simple rules, a ordable and lightweight gear, and a smaller court size, anyone at any age can play and have fun.
The Surf City Pickleball Society, led by president Diana Abruscato and vice president Les Taylor, have been championing the sport locally since 2007. Acting as a liaison with the City of Huntington Beach, Abruscato scored four dedicated pickleball courts in 2017 at Worthy Park on 17th and Main Street. The permanent outdoor courts are free to the public, open and lighted daily until 10 p.m. Stop by on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon for drop-in play – just remember to bring court shoes and a smile.
DISC GOLF
The disc golf course in Huntington Beach is the second oldest disc golf course in the world (the first is in Pasadena). The rules of disc golf relate to golf, but instead of hitting a ball with a club, you throw discs toward a metal target basket, which features a web of chains designed to deaden the impact of the disc and catch it. Each hole on the 18-hole course has a determined par and putters and drivers are used (di erently shaped discs) in a similar manner to golf course play. Here at the course, being able to rent discs and receive some free basic instruction makes this course attractive to new players. Most veteran disc golfers are more than willing to share tips with novice players. It’s cheap and fun.”
EQUESTRIAN
The Huntington Central Park Equestrian Center (18381 Goldenwest St, Huntington Beach, hcpec.com) is situated on 25 acres of beautiful, sea-breezed land just two miles from the beach. With nearly 400 horses, multiple trainers and arenas, annual horse shows in several disciplines, a wedding venue, and more than 150 acres of public trails, this is one of Southern California’s premier equestrian facilities, and it’s open to the public.
ROLLER SKATING
Surf City Skates (326 Main St. #101, Huntington Beach, surfcityskates.com) is owned by avid roller skater Toni Edwards, who created her shop to inspire and educate roller skaters and skateboarders of any age and skill level. Surf City Skates o ers customers high quality performing (and nice looking) gear while o ering rentals, tips, training, group skating meets, and more from a sta of experienced skaters. Looking to stand out on the paved beach path? Check out the shop’s collection of custom Vans roller skates—from leopard prints to LED wheels to retro looks.
BEACH YOGA
Relax, rejuvenate, and take in the beauty of your surroundings at Yoga on the Beach (Tower 14, Huntington Beach, instagram.com/ yogaonthebeachhuntingtonbeach). Enjoy the sounds of the ocean as you flow through your yoga poses. And don’t stress: classes are for all levels and taught every day—just bring your mat, water, and sunscreen.
MAKE A SPLASH
There are so many ways to enjoy the calm waters of Huntington Harbour and surrounding Sunset Beach. Charter a private boat for a fishing excursion, cruise along in a Du y boat, venture out with a friend by kayak, or give stand-up paddleboarding a go—the open water awaits you!
DUFFY BOATS
First, let us explain why they call it a Du y boat. Invented by a curious teenager living in Newport Beach, Marshall “Du y” Du ield combined a golf cart battery with a day boat to create the quiet cruiser. Today, the electric rentals can be seen all over Huntington Beach, and they are the perfect way to enjoy a relaxing afternoon or evening with a large group of friends and loved ones.
Check out Huntington Harbor Boat Rentals (16732 Pacific Coast Hwy., Sunset Beach, 562.592.7877), the go-to place for renting electric Du y boats that can accommodate up to 12 passengers for two hours at a time.
BOATING & FISHING CHARTERS
Family-owned and operated Prince Charters (3821 Warner Ave., Huntington Beach, princechartersllc.com) o ers private charters on classic wooden boats and luxury yachts. Captain Doug helms the ship here—he’s been boating for over 40 years and is also a captain in the U.S. Coast Guard. His grandfather Dr. Gilbert Prince, an ordained minister, first launched the business in 1965, and Captain Doug carries on his family’s legacy.
Wagner Charters (3821 Warner Ave., Huntington Beach, wagnercharters.com) is a family-run business by Captain Bob and his son/first mate Robert, o ering fishing and boat charters to Catalina. Captain Bob has had quite the accomplished life–he’s a veteran of the U.S. Air Force with a master’s credential from the U.S. Coast Guard, and he loves sharing his 40 years of experience fishing in the Pacific Ocean. Their boat is a 27-foot Edgewater Express with a head, microwave, and bunk below deck (should you become weary from catching fish and need a nap)!
HUNTINGTON HARBOUR PADDLEBOARDING AND KAYAKS
Feeling more adventurous? Stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking are other popular ways to navigate Huntington Harbour. Go at your own pace while enjoying picturesque views of stunning OC homes and lavish yachts. Here are the best places to rent your preferred mode of water transportation:
OC Paddlesports (16862 Pacific Coast Hwy., Sunset Beach, 714.654.2142) is a family-owned business, located right on the water with all new equipment ready to send you on your way. Surf City USA
UNCOVERED
EVERY CITY HAS ITS SECRETS, THOSE LITTLE-KNOWN GEMS THAT HELP TELL ITS UNIQUE STORY. HUNTINGTON BEACH IS NO DIFFERENT.
WORLD’S LARGEST SURFBOARD
While not everybody roaming around Huntington Beach can surf, that doesn’t stop visitors from falling in love with the city’s beach vibe, welcoming spirit, and surf culture. Start your discovery at Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum (411 Olive Ave., Huntington Beach, huntingtonbeachsurfingmuseum.org), which was founded several decades ago by the late Natalie Kotsch, a non-surfer from Canada. Located in an iconic art deco building, the non-profit museum is a fantastic place to learn about the history of surfing and participate in the sport’s present—from significant artifacts such as Duke Kahanamoku’s surfboard to the recordbreaking “World’s Largest Surfboard,” which measures 42-feet long, 11-feet wide, 16-inches thick, and a whopping 1,300 pounds!
THE WRIGHT STUFF
Sure, we know his father better, but Frank Lloyd Wright Jr. also made quite a name for himself as an architect. Commonly known as Lloyd Wright, he designed many prominent structures in Southern California including the Hollywood Bowl and the Wayfarers Chapel in Palos Verdes. The last thing the younger Wright ever designed (he passed away in 1978) was a shopping center and gas station at Warner Avenue and Springdale Street. Wright’s architecture is still there, featuring interesting Art Deco touches and unique lines and angles; look for a mysterious headstone that tells the story of his tower that wasn’t meant to be. This is truly one of the best-kept secrets in Huntington Beach.
SECRET SILOS…
Stand in the shadows of nearly 100-year-old structures that harken back to the city’s agricultural past at Main Street and Yorktown Avenue. Now a corporate o ice park, you can travel the paved walkway to the middle of the complex and discover original grain silos that were built in the early 1930s. Before o ice workers took over the area, there were sheep and livestock roaming around when the silos were full of grain to feed the animals. After oil was discovered in 1920, there were fewer structures like this left in Surf
City, but the e orts of preservationists in the 1970s kept these remarkable structures intact. For an Instagrammable opportunity, this place is definitely worth a visit.
… AND A SECRET PARK!
And while you’re there, walk over to the grounds nearby Sunrise Senior Living Facility (7401 Yorktown Ave., Huntington Beach), where you will find a secret staircase leading up to one of the prettiest little-known parks in Huntington Beach. Over 100 years ago, a mansion existed here, owned by wealthy landowner Robert Northam. The magnificent structure was eventually taken over by the Huntington Beach Company, and sadly it burned to the ground in 2000. But when you visit the park today where the house used to

SHE STILL STANDS
In the early 1900s, the Evangeline Hotel (421 8th St., Huntington Beach) opened for business. Back then, Civil War veterans would stay here as they staged nearby reunions in Huntington Beach. Over the years, this beautiful 21-room building also served as a youth hostel. Today it’s owned privately but it’s been restored beautifully and seeing it is a great way to experience Huntington Beach’s earliest days.

Huntington Beach is a retail playground for all types of styles and budgets. From genuine California surf shops and charming neighborhood boutiques to major outdoor shopping centers, you’ll find plenty of fashion statements, vintage finds, antique keepsakes, and unique souvenirs to take home.
MAIN STREET HUNTINGTON BEACH
Since the city was o icially incorporated way back in 1909, Main Street and Pacific Coast Highway has been the hub—the historic heart of Huntington Beach and a great go-to place for local shopping. Over the years, it has evolved from functional outlets like hardware stores and radio repair shops to now must-see surf shops, local boutiques, and cutting-edge modern surf wear. Main Street has always been the place to be, and that doesn’t look to be changing any time soon.
PACIFIC CITY
Just wait until you see the views while you shop and eat at this modern gem of a place. Pacific City (21010 Pacific Coast Hwy., Huntington Beach, gopacificcity.com) is a recent addition to Surf City USA and o ers a mix of local retail and entertainment centers. Bursting with cutting-edge stores and fine dining overlooking the ocean, you can easily spend an entire day here, basking in the sun and shopping to your heart’s delight. There’s also a variety of health and beauty spots to help you look and feel your best. A callback to Huntington Beach’s original name prior to 1909, Pacific City now represents a beautiful and bustling coastal experience that attracts people from all over Orange County and beyond.
BELLA TERRA
A major outdoor retail and entertainment center with a coastalcasual style, Bella Terra (7777 Edinger Ave., Huntington Beach, bella-terra-hb.com) features more than 75 retail stores and restaurants, plus a state-of-the-art, stadium-style movie theater. A staple in Huntington Beach for many years, Bella Terra only recently evolved into the beautiful complex that it is today. 5 POINTS PLAZA
A favorite since 1961, 5 Points Plaza (18593 Main St., Huntington Beach, 5pointsplaza.com) is old school HB with a classic mix of retail and dining—40 establishments in all. Shop at this insider’s locale, featuring both independently owned stores along with bigname shops and restaurants. Generations have been coming to the oldest and most trusted shopping center for decades, and it’s a great way to experience local flavor too.
SUNSET BEACH
Sunset Beach is still one of the best-kept secrets in Southern California. It’s o icially part of Huntington Beach now, and it’s a wonderful place to wander and soak up some vintage beach vibes. Positioned along Pacific Coast Highway south of Seal Beach, you’ll find antique stores with nautical themes, great local establishments that have been popular for decades, and interesting shops that reflect the neighborhood’s folksy, small-town personality. Make some time, at least half a day, to explore this wonderful little stretch of classic California.
NEARBY LUXURY
Venture down Pacific Coast Highway—10 miles south from Huntington Beach—to Fashion Island (401 Newport Center Dr., Newport Beach, fashionisland.com), one of the largest openair centers in the U.S. Boasting nearly 200 exquisite stores and restaurants and perched on a hill overlooking the ocean, the views are as amazing as the shopping.
Head inland—10 miles east—to South Coast Plaza (3333 Bristol St., Costa Mesa, southcoastplaza.com), the largest shopping center on the West Coast and celebrating its 55th anniversary. Most of its 275 retailers—from charming boutiques to major department stores—specialize in luxury o ers such as Louis Vuitton, Hermès, Buccellati, and Audemars Piguet. (You never know what celebrity you might see here!)
PACIFIC CITY BELLA TERRA FASHION ISLANDA Spotlight On LOCAL BUSINESS
The City of Huntington Beach has over 200,000 residents, and yet it retains a small-town feel where people know and support each other. Just ask these four diverse business owners, who have set up shop in Surf City USA—because it’s all about community.
| BY MARCIE TAYLORBrett Beale, owner of Beale’s Texas BBQ (16400 Pacific Coast Hwy., Huntington Beach, bealestexasbbq.com) at Peter’s Landing, opened up his eatery three years ago. One of a couple dozen blackowned restaurants in Orange Country, Beale learned his craft from pitmaster Bill Cannon of Texas BBQ Rub. He serves his barbecue with Bill’s “gold dust” along with traditional Southern sides like collard greens, mac and cheese, and yams. “The Huntington Beach community has been supportive and welcoming,” says Beale. “I love the community, for I was born and raised in Orange County [in Santa Ana], so it has been awesome to be back.”
The husband-and-wife team of Tammy Ha and Joe Nguyen opened up Houseplant Nation (17045 Newland St., Huntington Beach), their second location, during the pandemic in September 2020. The nursery shop carries both common indoor plants and some rare tropical species, and it also o ers pottery and handmade goods from local artisans. “We are Huntington Beach residents, and our daughters go to school in HB,” says Ha. “Being a working mom and running your own business is tough, so I always wanted to have a space for my business in the same city where we live. We love living and working in HB. The ocean breeze reminds my husband of his hometown back in Vietnam, along the coast.”
Wet Dog Tavern (221 Main St., Huntington Beach, wetdogindustries. com), located two blocks from the Pier, is a dog-friendly, cozy restaurant with a stress-free vibe. “I really enjoy the excitement of Main Street,” says owner Kammy Major. “The locals are such a fun-loving group of people who really embody what our tavern is all about: togetherness and inclusivity.” Wet Dog Tavern has a full kitchen serving traditional pub classics including wings, tacos, burgers, sandwiches and a bar with local beers, liquors, and a great happy hour, seven days a week. The restaurant also hosts community events like for Pride month every June. “The city is always doing such a great job of organizing events for both locals and tourists,” says Major. “I think that the people of Huntington Beach are a driven group of people who really understand the
meaning of the phrase ‘work hard, play hard’.
For authentic, fine Thai cuisine served by residents of Surf City USA, head over to Silk Thai (19690 Beach Blvd., Huntington Beach, ordersilkthaicuisine.com). Owned and operated by locals Sue Pittayavanich and Vandy Nuttased, who are both originally from Thailand, the menu has traditional dishes like lemongrass soup, pad Thai noodles, and jasmine fried rice. Spicy food enthusiasts will like the “Crying Tiger”—char-grilled, premium filet mignon marinated with a special homemade sauce, served medium rare with mixed vegetables and a chili-lime dipping sauce. As for why they opened their business in Huntington Beach, Nuttased says, “We love the beach, the weather, and the people!”
ECO-FRIENDLY BUSINESS AS USUAL
BY MARCIE TAYLORThe City of Huntington Beach is blessed with so many gifts from mother nature including the ocean, fertile soil for our green parks, and the constant Mediterranean climate. Protecting the environment is a priority for those who live and do business here. As climate change continues to a ect our lives, it’s important to support sustainability. Here are a few local businesses that have successfully incorporated ecofriendly practices into their daily operations, including an organic soapmaker, a seafood restaurant, a salon, and even a hotel.
IN THEIR ELEMENT
Founded in 1993 by Scott and Faith Freeman, Primal Elements (18062 Redondo Circle, Huntington Beach, primalelements.com) is a family-owned and -operated business that manufactures handmade soap, body care, and home fragrance products. “[Being eco-friendly] has been an important mission for us,” says its current president Mitchell Freeman. “Our industry is focused on sustainable products, so when the question came to us about creating a
sustainable work environment, we felt this would be best for the company, our employees, and our customers.” Primal Elements’ products are not tested on animals, contain no animal ingredients, and use recyclable packaging. When asked why his family decided to open a business in HB, he says: “[It has] been my home since the 1970s. It is a fabulous place to live and a great place to work. We get our inspiration from the Huntington Beach lifestyle.”
RADIATING BEAUTY
With a tagline of “Sustainable Beauty Vibes,” Meleesa the Salon (21501 Brookhurst St., Ste. E, Huntington Beach, meleesathesalon. com) was founded in 2005 by industry professional Meleesa Luna with a mission to “incorporate radiant health, sustainable practices, and a holistic approach to on-trend styling.” Some of its green practices include donating hair clippings for oil spill cleanups; recycling/repurposing hair foils, color tubes, paper, plastic, glass, and spa waste; diverting hair dyes from going down the drain; and using clean, vegan, and cruelty-free products.
SUSTAINABLE SEAFOOD
Slapfish (19696 Beach Blvd., Huntington Beach, slapfishrestaurant. com) started out as a food truck in the mid-aughts and grew into a seafood restaurant chain with 26 locations all over the world, serving only sustainable seafood. “We buy our seafood as close to the source as possible in order to both cut out the middleman and ensure we are procuring the most well-managed, sustainable seafood,” says Andrew Gruel, chef and founder of the modern seafood shack, whose flagship store is at Huntington Beach’s Newland Center. “Our goal is to get people to eat more of the right types of seafood by keeping our food ridiculously fresh and refreshingly responsible.” And what makes Surf City USA so perfect for his restaurant’s mission? “No one is better at stewarding our ocean than ocean lovers—surfers especially,” says Gruel. “People in HB understand what it means to move a sustainable life in harmony with the ocean and the marine ecosystem.”
BREATHTAKING AND ECO-FRIENDLY
The Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort and Spa (21500 Pacific Coast Hwy., Huntington Beach, hyatt.com) is not only a gorgeous home away from home for many Surf City USA visitors, but it also has high marks from California’s Green Lodging Program. At the “Leadership Level,” the second highest level of the program, the hotel scores well in recycling, energy e iciency, freshwater resource management, and hazardous materials management. Its eco-friendly practices include minimizing energy outputs by using electricity only as needed in rooms and meeting spaces, as well as recycling materials such as cooking oil, batteries, light bulbs, glass, aluminum, and even the crayons used by kids in the restaurants. To encourage water conservation, towels and linens are changed every three days, and low-flow showerheads, sink aerators, and toilet tank diverters are also in place.
BRING YOUR OWN
Started in nearby Long Beach in 2017, BYO Huntington Beach (714 Adams Ave., Ste. 106, byolongbeach.com) is a local resource for refilling non-toxic household cleaning products and personal care products. Sharing a space with Plants by Yours on Adams Avenue, BYO Huntington Beach encourages customers to bring their own container to help reduce the number of single-use plastics that enter the city’s waste stream. “[We’re] here to help make small steps that have a big impact on our community and our planet,” says owner Julie Darrell. “Our goal is to help keep our oceans and beaches clean by o ering alternatives like beeswax food wraps, reusable utensils, to-go containers…and so much more.”

BOLSA CHICA STATE BEACH RV CAMPING
17851 Pacific Coast Hwy., Huntington Beach, 714.846.3460, parks.ca.gov/bolsachica
“You look out your window mornings and see Catalina across the blue water and breathe in that great salt-sea air,” says Tom Valdez of South Dakota, who has been RV living at Bolsa Chica State Beach for more years than he can remember. “Then late in the day you’re grilling dinner in the firepits and watching the clearest, most beautiful sunset o the sea.”
The state campground has 57 spots that stay filled year-round, and you often need to reserve space months in advance to get in. A high percentage of campers bring surfboards, as well as bikes to ride
the popular multi-purpose trail that runs from Seal Beach to Newport Beach. While you can find license plates from almost any state, “the majority of our guests live within 15 miles of here,” says Valdez, a volunteer host. “This is their chance to make the beach a part of their Southern California living.”

NEARBY ADVENTURE
One of the great things about Huntington Beach is its close proximity to many other classic Southern California locations. Whether it’s a drive inland to ride the Matterhorn at Disneyland® Resort or a trek north to L.A. to see the iconic Hollywood Sign, there’s nothing like a magical daytrip, especially one that’s capped with a relaxing night back in Surf City USA.
15 MILES OR LESS
SEAL BEACH
One of our favorite day trips is a simple drive over to Seal Beach, where an old-fashioned wooden pier awaits along with a charming Main Street featuring dozens of shops and eateries. You’ll also find the Red Car Museum (800-840 Electric Ave., Seal Beach), an old Pacific Electric tower car built in 1925 and the type of quaint train that once motored through Huntington Beach.
LONG BEACH
Another nearby waterfront playground is the city of Long Beach, located in the heart of Southern California. Lots to do here: a deepsea adventure at the Aquarium of the Pacific (100 Aquarium Way, Long Beach), whale watching on the water, shopping in one of the city’s many unique districts, a tour of coastal breweries, a vibrant foodie scene, and so much more. Long Beach is a great Surf City USA neighbor.
25 MILES OR LESS
LAGUNA BEACH
Laguna Beach is undoubtedly one of California’s cutest and most beautiful coastal towns, loaded with great places to eat, art galleries, amazing beaches, and many eclectic shops. The arts community defines this seaside gem, and by driving down the indescribably beautiful Pacific Coast Highway, you’re just a hop, skip, and a jump from Huntington Beach.
ANAHEIM
Since 1955, Disneyland® Resort (1313 Disneyland Dr., Anaheim) has been Southern California’s premier attraction, delighting bright-eyed kids and well-traveled adults from all over the world. Huntington Beach is the closest beach to the “The Happiest Place on Earth” and is an incredible experience for first timers and a
sentimental place for repeat visitors. Anaheim is also a superb destination for craft beer connoisseurs, where you can find local favorites like Karl Strauss Brewing Company, Brewheim, Golden Road Brewery, and Brewery X.
40 MILES PLUS
LOS ANGELES
Widely considered the entertainment capital of the world, L.A. o ers endless attractions and activities depending on your mood. Explore thrilling theme park rides and a movie studio tour at Universal Studios Hollywood (100 Universal City Plaza, Universal City) and landmark museums like the Broad Museum (21 S. Grand Ave., Los Angeles) and the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures (6067 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles). There’s chic bars and clubs on the Sunset Strip, music concerts at the Hollywood Bowl (2301 N. Highland Ave., Los Angeles), and numerous sporting events depending on the season. The list of things to do in the “big city” just goes on and on—just make sure you get back to your “small beach town” for the night.
100 MILES PLUS SAN DIEGO
Whether you're into hiking along the sandstone cli s of Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, walking through the gorgeous surf of Coronado Beach , or admiring the breathtaking scenery at La Jolla Cove, San Diego makes for an awesome day trip. Spend a day at 1200-acre Balboa Park among the many museums, theaters, and gardens; catch a Padres game at Petco Park (100 Park Blvd., San Diego); wander the lively downtown historic neighborhood called the Gaslamp Quarter and experience dozens of shops, restaurants, and bars. BEACH BASICS BEACH SAFETY TIPS
The Huntington Beach Marine Safety Division’s lifeguards are dedicated to ensuring that Surf City USA’s beaches remain accident-free. Here are safety tips developed by the lifeguards in conjunction with the U.S. Lifesaving Association. For more information, visit USLA.org
• Check on conditions. Before entering the water, ask lifeguards about water conditions.
• Never swim alone. Use the buddy system so someone will always know where you are.
• Swim sober. Alcohol is not allowed on the beaches in California and increases the potential for drowning by lowering body temperature, encouraging risky behavior, and impairing physical ability.
• Know your skill level. Don’t overestimate your swimming ability, especially on rough days. Stay ashore if you’re a non-swimmer.
• Don’t panic in rip currents. Swim parallel to the shore until you’re out of the current and then swim to the beach.
• Swim near sta ed lifeguard towers. Our lifeguards are the best. You’ll be much safer if they know where you are.
• Stay in designated areas. Portions of the beach are set aside for swimming or surfing. Keep a safe distance from jetties and the Huntington Beach Pier.
• Do the stingray shu le. Shu le your feet to scare away stingrays.
• Extend a hand out. Extend your hand in front of you in shallow breaking water when diving, body surfing, or wiping out on a surfboard.
• Don’t dig deep holes. Deep holes can cave in and create hazards for small children. Please refill any holes you dig.
• Do not bring glass to the beach. Remember, people walk with bare feet at the beach.
