BY BETH FHANERSURF CITY USA HAS seen an evolution through the years, including various changes in agriculture, oil, aerospace, beach culture, and surfing. Here are some of the city’s most fascinating historical milestones.
1898
The Newland House Museum, Huntington Beach’s oldest building, is built as a Queen Anne-style home by pioneers William and Mary Newland, farmers who settled here on 500 acres. As the city’s oldest and best-preserved residence, the building is added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
now extends 1,850 feet in length and is a world-famous tourist attraction. Also in 1904, the 4th of July Celebration begins as a way to welcome the Pacific Electric Red Cars brought in by railroad mogul Henry Huntington, the city's namesake. Today, the event is the largest Independence Day celebration west of the Mississippi River.
1909 Huntington Beach is incorporated with 215 residents under its first mayor, Ed Manning.
1914
George Freeth becomes the first person to surf near the Huntington Beach Pier.
1920
The city becomes a boomtown when California’s largest oil deposit at the time is discovered. Oil rigs dot the coastline and the city’s population increases from 1,500 to 5,000, all within a month.
1925
The city’s first surf shop is established when Gordie Duane opened Gordie’s Surf Boards. A year later, Jack’s Surfboards opens and today remains a major surf retailer in downtown HB.
The first West Coast Surfing Championships is held in HB. A year later, the event is televised for the first time, cementing the city's reputation as a surfing mecca. Now known as the U.S. Open of Surfing, the event is recognized as the world’s largest surf competition.
More than a half-million people turn out for the opening of the rebuilt pier, which was destroyed years earlier by winter storms.
The Surf City Marathon (originally called the Pacific Shoreline Marathon) makes its debut with less than 600 finishers. Today, the popular race attracts more than 17,000 runners from all 50 states and 30 countries.
The outdoor Bella Terra shopping center is on the former site of the 1960s-vintage Huntington Center.

The Huntington Beach Company (Standard Oil) builds a wooden pier at Main Street and PCH. The iconic Huntington Beach Pier
Olympic gold medalist and Hawaiian legend Duke Kahanamoku hits the waves on his redwood surfboard, officially bringing the sport to HB.
Dean Torrance of rock duo Jan and Dean records the classic surf tune "Surf City"—in 1991, he successfully lobbies for the city's official nickname to become Surf City USA®.
Huntington Beach becomes the fastest growing city in the contiguous U.S., driven by a population drawn to the locale, weather, and nearby jobs.
The Old World Village shopping and dining center is developed; it’s now synonymous with the annual Oktoberfest festival.
The highly anticipated Pacific City shopping center debuts in downtown HB. That same year, 66 people ride an epic wave for 12 seconds, resulting in a world record for the most people riding a surfboard at one time. Additionally, the 42-foot-long board sets a world record for “World’s Largest Surfboard,” which is currently on display at the International Surfing Museum in downtown.
The Pacific Airshow launches in Huntington Beach. The thrilling, three-day event now attracts millions of spectators each fall.

PERHAPS BEST KNOWN FOR WINNING back-to-back titles at the U.S. Open of Surfing in 2009 and 2010, Brett Simpson grew up in Surf City USA® and still makes his home here. The inaugural coach of the gold medal U.S. Olympic surf team is deeply involved with HB Boardriders Club, a community organization for positive movement.
What drew you to surfing, and how old were you when you started?
I actually grew up playing all “ball” sports, as my dad played professional football from 1974 to 82. Then when I
was 11, my neighbor and I went to Seal Beach to try and surf…I was hooked! I fell in love with the difficulty of surfing and the challenging nature of it, begged my parents for a surfboard for Christmas in 1997, and the rest was history! I would try and surf before school and after as well. I was truly addicted, and once I started to figure it out more, I knew this is what I wanted to do and made a career of it.
What was it like growing up in Huntington Beach, making your way up the ranks and winning back-toback championships at the U.S. Open?
I can’t see myself anywhere else. The surf culture is ingrained in me, and I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. There are so many great surfers before me that I have looked up to in Huntington Beach, and the surf culture is just crazy to be a part of. Everyone would always show support and just hope the best for me on the tour.
My big wins in ‘09 and ‘10 were what really helped put me on the map, and to have those massive wins in my own backyard were pretty storybook endings. I didn’t really get to enjoy it during the moment, but now as I get to look back and relive those moments, I’m truly proud of all my accomplishments and couldn’t have done it without all my support crew and the city of HB!
Tell us about your transition to head coach of the U.S. Olympic surf team. What were some of your biggest challenges and rewards?
I honestly never really envisioned myself coaching, especially right after I was off the World [Surf League] tour. Time does some mysterious things and I felt I had a lot to give to the youth from my learning all these years. I earned the head coaching job of the USA junior surf team and we had a lot of success. We went on to win an [International
Surfing Association] World Junior gold medal right here in Huntington Beach in ‘21.
That led to some bigger and better opportunities, and I was blessed enough to get support from the Olympic athletes and earned the Olympic head coaching job for the 2020 games [moved to 2021] in Tokyo. It was definitely one of my highest accolades in my career. And then Carissa Moore went on to win the gold medal, which was icing on the cake. It was such an honor to represent the greatest nation and our amazing city of HB!
What are your favorite spots in HB and what do you love about the city?
We have lots of favorites in HB. I’m a big coffee and breakfast guy so Sugar Shack, which is owned by the Turner family (big surfers!), would be a top pick. Java Point at Huntington Surf & Sport, Northside Cafe off Bushard Street, Sur Coffee, plus our lunch/night spots are Riip Brew, Olive Pit, Ola Mexican Kitchen, solita, Stacked, A Slice of New York Pizza, plus others.
The Pier is my go-to surf spot, usually in the summer on
the northside and in the winter on the southside. I’ll venture to the cliffs on some bigger swells, and same with the river jetties. I love the consistency of our waves year round. We get all angles of swells, which makes it pretty much rideable surf 365 days a year. That to me is very important and why I love living here. I know I can wake up daily and there will be something out there for me to ride!
Are you currently involved in any other projects?
I’m involved heavily in the HB Boardriders Club, which is an amazing surf program and organization for anyone living in HB that wants to be involved. It’s very family-oriented—we do monthly get-togethers, and we also compete against other cities up and down the coast as well as a big finals at Lower Trestles. It’s a great opportunity to connect with new people/surfers and also push yourself to be a better surfer through local events and competition.
I’m also the head sports marketing director at Hurley, which allows me to be very involved in the surf realm by working with our amazing roster of athletes and helping them chase their dreams!

Beach cruising is certainly a huge part of the Huntington Beach culture. Imagine renting a classic beach cruiser and enjoying the many miles of bike path in HB, where an incredible trail literally hugs the coast the entire way and is completely flat. For a leg-friendly ride, electric biking is the way to go. Electric bikes offer all the pleasures of beach cruising, yet they are much easier on the body, and there
are so many places to rent one around HB. Need more of a challenge? Road cycling is for more advanced riders on bikes with multiple gears, and it certainly begets seeing more of Orange County. Be sure to say hello to fellow road cyclists and safely follow the dedicated lanes throughout the city.
Now known as the fastest growing sport in America, pickleball combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. With simple rules, affordable and lightweight gear, and a smaller court size, having fun is not limited to a certain age or skill level. Start with the Surf City Pickleball

There are several places to play pickleball here, none better than the 24 courts at Huntington Beach Pickleball (huntingtonbeachpickleball.com) on Goldenwest Street. Enroll in lessons, join a league, or just play with friends there. Worthy Park on 17th and Main Street has permanent outdoor courts that are free to the public, open and lighted daily until 10 p.m. Stop by on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon for drop-in play–just remember to bring court shoes and a smile.
Hating golf lately? Then leave your clubs at home and give disc golf a try. The rules are similar to golf, though instead of hitting a ball with a club, players throw frisbee-like discs toward a metal target basket, which features a web of chains designed to deaden the impact of the disc and catch it. Each hole on the 18-hole course has a determined par and putters and drivers are used (differently shaped discs).

Huntington State Beach

Huntington City Beach
This 3.5-mile stretch of sand sits in the shadow of the city’s majestic 1,850-foot long Huntington Beach Pier. Whether you surf or not, you’ll be mesmerized by the professional surfers who frequent the area, as they effortlessly glide across the waves. The beach is also the location of numerous special events, such as the U.S. Open of Surfing, the Pacific Airshow, and the annual 4th of July Celebration
This is an action-packed destination with some of the best surfing in California, and you’ll have access to volleyball courts, a paved beach path, and wheelchairaccessible Mobi Mats. There are bike, surfboard, and boogie board rentals available as well. After a full day of playing on the beach, gather around one of the fire rings for more adventure after dark. Huntington Dog Beach
If all dogs go to heaven, it probably looks like this place. As the name implies, Huntington Dog Beach is a dog-friendly beach where your furry friend can run free and frolic in the waves. The beach is a great spot for your dog to stretch his or her legs while you soak up the sun, and there are so many pawsome events here such as Corgi Beach Day and SoCal Wienerfest
Huntington Dog Beach has a worldwide reputation for being friendly and laid-back, and it’s affectionately called “Doggy Disneyland” for feeling like the happiest place on earth. Established in 1998 as a non-profit organization, it relies solely on donations from private citizens to fund the operating expenses, which includes providing doggie waste bags free of charge to all visitors. Sunset Beach
One of Southern California’s most serene beaches, Sunset Beach is located in a charming seaside community that marches to the beat of its own drum. Considered a part of Huntington Beach since 2011, you’ll find a perfectlyprotected pocket of interesting shops, bars, restaurants, and layers of local lore.
After beach time, be sure to check out the selfguided Sunset Beach Walking Tour. From wild tales of Prohibition-era rum running to the complex network of coastal duck hunting lodges to the old red car that used to rumble through town, there are plenty of traces of the past to be discovered. Swim sober
Alcohol is not allowed on the beach, and it increases the potential for drowning by lowering body temperature, encouraging risky behavior, and impairing physical ability.
Know your skill level
Don’t overestimate your swimming ability,
especially on rough days. Stay ashore if you’re a non-swimmer.
Stay calm in rip currents Swim parallel to the shore until you’re out of the current, and then swim to the beach.
Swim near staffed lifeguard towers
Huntington Beach lifeguards are the best, and you’ll be much safer if they know where you are.
Stay in designated areas
Portions of the beach are set aside for swimming or surfing. Keep a safe distance from jetties and the Huntington Beach Pier.

First installed in May 2021, Mobi-Mats at Huntington City Beach (6th Street between 1st and Huntington Streets) lay on the sand and stretch all the way down to the water’s edge during high tide providing convenient shoreline access. Made of 100 percent recycled water bottles, the mats prevent wheeled devices from sinking into the sand and make the operation of wheelchairs, strollers, and walkers much easier. The city is looking to add more Mobi-mats beyond Huntington City Beach in the near future.
The Huntington Beach Bike Trail is a mostly-flat, multi-use paved pathway that stretches nearly 8.5 miles along the coastline from Bolsa Chica to Huntington Sta te Beach with additional wide-paved paths stretching from it. Shade structures with accessible features are at the foot of both Newland and Brookhurst Streets, and designated accessible parking and restrooms are located nearby.

Equipped with large, wide wheels that are able to roll across the sand without sinking, beach wheelchairs are available to rent for free. Personal identification may have to be provided during the rental period, and while some wheelchairs can be reserved ahead of time, others are first-come, first-served. The beach wheelchairs also typically require users to be accompanied by someone pushing them.
Former professional surfer Rocky McKinnon of McKinnon Surf & SUP Lessons set out to make surfing a more inclusive sport so those with physical disabilities are able to experience the thrill of catching waves. McKinnon designed a 14-foot chair board specifically for adaptive surfing, and currently offers hour-long tandem surfing or chair boarding lessons. The largest city-owned park in Orange County, Huntington Beach Central Library, envisioned by Richard Neutra and his son, Dion, and completed in 1975. Think of it as a small slice of New York’s park of the same name. In the summer, theatregoers can enjoy a free outdoor concert series at the amphitheater while kids can get dirty playing throwback games in Adventure Playground.
Architecture buffs will take note of the stunning latemodern design of Huntington Beach Central Library, envisioned by Richard Neutra and his son, Dion, and completed in 1975. Tucked behind the library, take a meditative
walk along the Secret Garden, which was built to showcase drought tolerant plants and provide a moment of serenity for those who visit. (It’s also a great spot for bird watching.)
At Central Park West, more adventure awaits: a dog park, disc golf course, equestrian center, a senior center, a lake for fishing, and Kathy May’s Lakeview Café. Kids will discover one of the best playground structures in the city and not your typical slide-and-swing combo. There are three-dimensional climbing structures, rope bridges, and zip lines. For younger children, there’s a toddler playground with baby swings and a teeter-totter with a nice view of the lake.
Another park for kids is the pirate-themed All-Inclusive Playground at the Beach, located just north of the pier. Designed to promote interactive play for children of all abilities, it features a rubber surface that complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act and equipment that allows wheelchairs. The playground can be accessed from existing pathways from parking areas and the beach path.
Named after Orange County’s first female supervisor, Harriett M. Weider Regional Park sits on four acres of land with nature trails and native plants abound. Get a view of the oil field and parts of the Bolsa Chica Wetlands with the Pacific Ocean in the distance. Playground equipment for older and younger kids, plus free workout equipment, is available.
Finally, relish the sights, smells, and sounds of countryside living at Shipley Nature Center, a charming place where you can imagine life in Huntington Beach over a century ago. Go bird watching and wander self-guided trails to find freshwater ponds, stately oak trees, and, come spring, brilliant orange California poppies.
Wetland habitats are important to the environment, serving essential functions in an ecosystem, including acting as water filters, providing flood and erosion control, and furnishing food and homes for fish and wildlife. Huntington Beach is home to several preserved wetlands ripe for exploration.
The Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve is the largest saltwater marsh along the coast of California and the most well-known local wetlands. The 1,300-acre region includes five miles of trails and tons of bird watching opportunities. Make sure you stop off at the Bolsa Chica Wetlands
Interpretive Center to learn more about the area. You’ll find trail access from a parking lot on the inland side of Pacific Coast Highway, a mile south of Warner Avenue across from
the entrance to Bolsa Chica State Beach. Both locations offer free limited parking for nature enthusiasts. Tours of the wetlands are also given by different conservation groups: Amigos de Bolsa Chica and Bolsa Chica Land Trust.
The Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center has a number of worthwhile programs that support the environment and native wildlife. Open seven days a week and 365 days a year, WWCC is dedicated to the rehabilitation and release of sick, injured, and orphaned animals in California, some of which are threatened or endangered species. The center cares for birds impacted by oil spills; it rears abandoned eggs from Western Snowy Plovers before releasing them into the wild; and it provides qualified home care for hummingbirds with the goal to re-nest or reunite fledglings. WWCC welcomes volunteers, which are essential to its operations.
Magnolia Marsh is located between Magnolia Street and the Huntington Beach Energy Project. Re-creation of the historical marsh channels and restoration of full tidal influence were completed in 2010, and a raised observation deck now extends out over a tidal pond. Talbert Marsh offers the public a multipurpose trail on approximately 25 acres from Brookhurst Street to the Santa Ana River Trail. Around 90 species of birds have been observed at Talbert Marsh. In addition to year-round residents, thousands of birds use the Huntington wetlands as a rest stop during their long migrations along the Pacific Flyway from their nesting grounds in the Arctic to their wintering grounds in South America.

CHEF ANDREW GRUEL IS ALWAYS MOVING, like a hungry catfish circling our local waters. He’s mastered the food truck and is the king of a sustainable seafood empire. Gruel is also CEO and founder of American Gravy Restaurant Group, which includes Two Birds Chicken, Butterleaf, Lolo’s Tacos, Big Parm Pizza, 101 Burger, and his latest venture, Calico Fish House. As if that wasn’t enough, he also has appeared as a judge on Food Network’s Chopped Junior and Food Truck Face Off. Gruel stopped to talk with us about expanding his business empire and the inspiration for his dishes.
What initially motivated you to start cooking?
I fell in love with old-school cooking shows at a young age and was inspired to cook. I was fascinated by not just food but the kitchen culture as well, so I started working in restaurants and hotels at a young age—and the rest is history.
Where do you get the inspiration for your dishes?
I love American diner cuisine—well-known dishes that most Americans love. My “formula” has always been trying to redefine these well-known dishes with a new spin— think classic grilled cheese, salads, and childhood snacks. No reason to reinvent the wheel! Just add a few new ingredients and a seafood-like spin.
Can you tell us about your new restaurant, Calico Fish House, in Sunset Beach?
Calico Fish House was inspired by the beauty, deliciousness, and resilience of the calico bass that is native to Southern California waters. The restaurant is a seafood chophouse that represents the best of sustainable, economically viable, and clean dining. My wife, Lauren, and I wanted to offer diners the ultimate take on local and responsibly sourced seafood—so we work directly with fishermen and farmers to source the best possible products available, and we support local economies.
How is sustainability at the forefront of your current operation and future plans?
Sustainable seafood is a priority to me. For 15 years, I served as the director of the Aquarium of the Pacific’s “Seafood for the Future” program, where I worked with
chefs and fishermen to educate consumers on sustainable seafood. Everything we do has a “why” behind it: “Why are we purchasing ‘X’ item?” and “How will that fit into our mission to provide healthy, properly curated food to our customers?”
This means taking into consideration the effect all of our purchases have on the local environment, the local economy, and the ecosystem, and how we can sustain small business owners. It’s why we always source from small independent operators when possible, even if that means spending a bit more.
What are your future plans for your restaurant groups?
We want to focus on building a few restaurants that can feed the community with sustainable, healthy, properlycurated (using seed oil and chemical-free) food while also building a restaurant family with strong team members whom we can pay well and support for many years to come.
Outside of the kitchen, what’s your favorite spot to spend time in Huntington Beach?
With four kids, we can be found at any park. We love the parks, the beach, Pacific City, and especially the wetlands!

How’d you get your start with HGTV?
That’s an interesting story. When my husband and I moved to Orange County and were building our first home, I
started posting pictures online. We later bought a place in Park City, Utah, and ended up renovating during a blizzard! I was still posting pictures to social media and I’d use the #beachbuild. HGTV saw it and ended up emailing me. They said they’d seen my stuff and asked if I would like to have a show. I remember calling my mother-in-law and saying, “This can’t be real, right?” That was the start of the show Hidden Potential. We did over 30 houses, all in Huntington Beach.
And now you’ve got a new show, Help! I Wrecked My House.
Yes, because we were hearing from a lot of folks trying to renovate on their own, only to reach out and say, literally, “Help, I wrecked my house!” Unfortunately, there are so many ways that things can go wrong. We’ve seen contractors that people hired who ended up ghosting them, or there are major electrical or plumbing problems. HGTV thought it’d be a good topic for a show and asked me if I’d like to do it. I said, “Yeah, absolutely, let’s help people.”
What drew you to Huntington Beach?
I grew up on the East Coast, in Virginia, but I’ve always loved Southern California. My husband is from Brea, and his family is still there so it was an easy decision to build our first home here. We love the active lifestyle, especially now that we have a toddler. There’s so much to do. My whole family moved out here as well. It’s been wonderful to become Californians.
Where can folks shop your designs and bring them into their homes?
We have a place in Long Beach. It’s called The Shop by Jasmine Roth. We first opened there as a holiday pop-up, and we’re still there. I have an online store, too [jasmine-roth.com] that allows me to connect with people from all over the world, but having a space for people to come in and feel products before they buy them has been
great. They often show me pictures of their latest projects. I like talking with them and hearing their stories.
What’s a little known fun fact about you?
If I could live on the beach, on the sand, I would. I’m someone who’s in constant motion. I always have to be doing something. But there I can go and relax, and take a break. The beach is my calm and happy place.

JUSTIN RATOWSKY, FOUNDER and lead singer of the Huntington Beach-based surf reggae rock band Cali Conscious, is all about spreading good vibes through his feel-good music and positive, environmentally-conscious lyrics. We recently asked Justin about what inspires him to make music, his plans for the band, and what he loves about performing in HB.
What is your background in music and how did you start Cali Conscious?
I grew up in Huntington Beach, where I started playing guitar and writing songs in high school. While attending UC Santa Barbara, I started riding my bike while simultaneously playing the guitar and riding all around campus and Isla Vista. I would also perform at the farmers markets and local restaurants on a weekly basis.
I returned to HB in 2010 and was invited to perform at the Huntington Beach High School Surf team banquet at the Quiksilver headquarters, and that’s really when things started to take off for us. That turned into a bi-weekly residency at Sandy’s Beach Grill, which gave us the confidence to seek out other venues, and we’ve been performing ever since.
What inspires you to create music?
Creating music is a way for me to express myself and connect with others. I’m inspired by the natural beauty of California and the ocean, as well as by bands like Steel Pulse and Jack Johnson. I love writing songs with positive themes and conscious messages that encourage people to come together and make a difference in the world.
We’re a reggae fusion band with a full three-piece horn section, and we love incorporating positive, conscious themes into our music. We’ve played as a full band at weddings, community events, corporate events, and music festivals, and we’re proud to be a part of the local music scene in Southern California.
What are your current and future plans for Cali Conscious?
We’re focusing on writing and recording new music and expanding our reach through social media. We’re also working on new merchandise designs for our online store at caliconscious.com. In the future, we hope to continue spreading our message of love and unity and touring more extensively in support of new music.
Do you have any favorite local spots?
We love performing at Duke’s Restaurant at the Huntington Beach Pier, Sandbar Reggae Wednesdays, and Sealegs at the Beach for Reggae Sundays. We also enjoy surfing and spending time at the beach with our family and friends.
What do you love about performing in Huntington Beach?
Performing in Huntington Beach is special to us because it’s our hometown and the community is so supportive of local artists. The reggae community in HB is also a one-
of-a-kind, close-knit group, and we’ve made many friends through our music. We love performing with the ocean as our backdrop and the beach vibes all around us.

Dubbed The Unstoppables, this crew of determined pups are inspiring superheroes— despite each one’s traumatic origin story, their sunny disposition and contagious zest for life never waiver.
The Unstoppables are part of Dream Fetchers, a nonprofit organization founded in 2005 by Debbie Pearl of Huntington Beach. Pearl has dedicated her life to rescuing dogs from abuse, particularly those with physical and mental limitations. Many of her dogs have physical issues that require prosthetics and wheelchairs, but that never stops them.
Once the animals are rescued, Dream Fetchers provides
training and tender loving care. Caring for older dogs with physical challenges can be expensive, and the organization relies entirely on donations. To support the mission, Pearl takes The Unstoppables team to nursing homes, hospitals, and schools, where they are so eager to spread their unbridled joy to similarly-challenged humans.
The Unstoppables are making a big impact too— they lead multiple fundraisers a year, stay active on social media, and have an illustrated book series to inspire kids, written by Lauren Kramer-Theurkauf.
