Its historic landmark neighbor, the Beaux-Arts style Fenyes Mansion (164-198 N. Orange Grove Blvd.), is part of the Pasadena Museum of History. The stately Wrigley Mansion (391 S. Orange Grove Blvd.) was built in 1906 and donated to Pasadena in 1958 to become the permanent home of the Tournament of Roses®. Other homes you can scout from the street include the Mary E. Denham House (297 S. Orange Grove Blvd.), which was built in 1895 and designed by architect Frederick L. Roehrig and Bissell House (201 Orange Grove Blvd., South Pasadena), an eight-room Victorian bed and breakfast. Built in 1887, it was the former residence of a member of the family behind the Bissell carpet cleaning empire.
East Washington Village
EAST WASHINGTON
Home to artisanal coffee houses, ice cream shops, and hole-in-the-wall eateries beloved by locals, East Washington Boulevard, between Holliston Avenue and Altadena Drive, is an eclectic, multi-cultural zone. Lavender & Honey Espresso Bar (1383 E. Washington Blvd.) serves specialty coffees and teas, deli sandwiches, and fancy toasts. Bacchus Kitchen (1384 E. Washington Blvd.) is a dinner only restaurant whose occasional “dinner and a show” combo features a three-course meal paired with live music. Family-run Connal’s (1505 E. Washington Blvd.) has been in the hamburger and sandwich business since 1958. Newcomer El Matador Mexican Food (1806 E. Washington Blvd.) serves its take on Californian-style Mexican staples. Try Middle Eastern sweets at Sarkis Pastry (1776 E. Washington Blvd.) or go for a scoop or two of artisanal ice cream at Carmela Ice Cream (2495 E. Washington Blvd.).

Old Sasson Bakery
The Gourmet Cobbler Factory
LOCAL FAMILY-OWNED
Pasadena’s streets are lined with world-class dining establishments and family-owned gems you won’t find anywhere else. Their recipes, handed down through the generations, shine just as brightly as the sun Pasadena enjoys year-round. Perle Restaurant offers California-inspired, classic French cuisine, featuring one of L.A.’s first French mirrored-menus, featuring seafood and meat on one side, and plant-based and vegetarian on the other. Old Sassoon Bakery’s lahmajoun (Armenian pizza) and khachapuri (bread filled with cheese and egg) are sure to satisfy the strongest carb cravings; while their baklava is sure to please any sweet tooth. The Pasadena Sandwich Company has been in the Fink family for three generations. They still cook meats in-house and make salads fresh daily, just as their grandparents did in the 50’s. Fusing traditional and contemporary Mexican cuisine, Urbano Mexican Kitchen’s flavors originate from the ranches of Zacatecas and the beaches of Baja. The Gourmet Cobbler Factory sources authentic ingredients locally and uses old-fashioned techniques to ensure the highest quality cobblers in town, baked fresh daily.

Gale’s Italian Restaurant
OUTDOOR DINING
With warm weather and blue skies, many Pasadena restaurants offer al fresco dining where diners can soak in the Southern California sunshine alongside some of the region’s most tantalizing cuisine. My Place Café is a homey coffee shop that locals adore, and Little Flower is a quaint café with an atmosphere and food that embody the mantra of “cozy and sweet.” Crack a cold one during happy hour on Congregation Ale House’s dog-friendly patio. Gale’s offers fine Italian cuisine and is a local favorite for date night and family dinners. The Playhouse Village’s Anaya’s features meals that are savory and well-seasoned to keep your tastebuds dancing. If you’re in the South Lake Avenue area, the patio at Celestino Ristorante and Bar is an elegant and inviting place for an evening out or try Mediterranean Café for generous helpings of their homemade-style meals. And one can never go wrong with some wok-fried noodles from Chim! Thai Street Food for the perfect balance of spices. See more al fresco options at visitpasadena.com/outdoordining

DISCOVER PASADENA’S PUBLIC ART In addition to the incredible artwork hanging inside the walls of Pasadena’s noteworthy museums and galleries, art can be found in many unexpected places here. The result of one of California’s longest running public art programs, nearly 100 public works are on display all over town. These contemporary and modern masterpieces range from sculptures and murals to artist-designed benches and painted utility boxes. And all of Pasadena’s stations on the Metro Gold Line have public art.
Must-sees include a Keith Haring Mural on the Art Center’s Hillside Campus. Even if you’re not going inside the Norton Simon Museum, you can certainly stop by to admire Rodin’s famous The Thinker overlooking Colorado Boulevard. Kneeling Man with a Hammer, a large eight-foot-tall ceramic statue, resides in One Colorado’s historic Smith Alley. The Pasadena Robinson Memorial bronze sculptures are located across from City Hall. Film buffs will appreciate Countdown Leader, a 20 x 6-foot ceramic tile mural on the exterior of a residential building at 217 South Marengo Avenue. And the fork in the road at the intersection of Pasadena and St. John Avenues on Bellefontaine Street is marked with an 18-foot-tall wooden Fork Sculpture. Find these works and many more on one of eight self-guided Public Art Walking Tours. Maps can be downloaded at cityofpasadena.net/planning/arts-andcultural-affairs/public-art-program/#walking-tours, or pick up a physical brochure at the Pasadena Visitors Center (300 E. Green St.)

3 DAYS OF PLAY IN PASADENA The more time you have in Pasadena, the more you can explore. This 3-day itinerary ensures you don’t miss out on any of the area’s key gems.
Norton Simon Museum
DAY ONE
(MOSTLY ON FOOT) Start your day off at the boutique coffee bar Lavender and Honey before heading to the Norton Simon Museum, home to one of the world’s most remarkable and expansive private art collections ever assembled. Once you’ve had your fill of art, you’ll want to get your fill of some delicious food. We recommend Cafe 54
Santorini for lunch. There’s an outdoor patio located on the second floor overlooking some of Pasadena’s local shops with a great vantage point for peoplewatching. From there, make your way east either along Colorado Boulevard or one of the quaint side streets, and window shop your way through Old Pasadena. Soon, you’ll arrive at the Civic Center District, and be greeted by its
architectural jewel, Pasadena City Hall. Make sure to snap a picture of its gorgeous dome before you head to the heart of the Playhouse Village and see the USC Pacific Asia Museum, or peruse some books at California’s oldest independent bookstore, Vroman’s Bookstore. Their book clubs and author workshops are local favorites.
PASADENA VISITORS GUIDE
T R AV E L T I P S For dinner, head across the street to El Portal, an authentic Yucatan restaurant. Most nights, you will be serenaded by a mariachi band while you dine. Wrap up the day with a show at the historic Pasadena Playhouse. The Playhouse is considered the Official State Theater of California, having hosted an array of notable stars including iconic Dustin Hoffman and modern-day pop princess Ariana Grande.
DAY TWO
(CAR OR PUBLIC TRANSIT) Fill up at Millie’s for a big breakfast that puts a Pasadena spin on the classic diner experience. You’ll need the extra fuel to make sure you have enough energy to spend a few hours strolling through the Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens. This 120-acre property includes 12 different botanical gardens to explore, each with their own locational theme. When you’re ready to cool off, step into the library to view original historic prints dating back thousands of years and visit the museum to enjoy paintings by world-renowned artists such as Van Gogh. By the time you make it through all that the Huntington has to offer, you’ll have worked up an appetite again. Take a trip to the west side of Pasadena to Little Flower for some light, fresh sandwiches, and salads. Don’t miss out on their delicious sea salt caramels to satisfy your sweet tooth! If you’re a film buff, you’ll want to visit the Gamble House, one of America’s most iconic examples of the Arts and Crafts architectural style. The home was featured in the Back to the Future film franchise and made its Hollywood debut as Doc Brown’s House. Of course, no trip to Pasadena is complete without a visit to the Wrigley Gardens. Once owned by the creators of VISITPASADENA.COM
Huntington Botanical Gardens
Wrigley Gum, the property was gifted to the city in 1958. The mansion now serves as the official headquarters for the Tournament of Roses®. For a change of pace, spend the afternoon exploring Pasadena’s South Lake Avenue District. There you can rest your feet and enjoy dinner and a craft cocktail at the Magnolia House, before exploring some of the shops that line South Lake Avenue. Like the Gamble House, the Magnolia House was once a traditional craftsman home. Wrap up the night with a good drink and some laughs. The Ice House Comedy Club invites some of Los Angeles and Hollywood’s biggest names in comedy to perform original skits and stand-up routines. Before they became household names, some of the most notable performers to grace the stage at the Ice House include George Lopez, Robin Williams, Jerry Seinfeld, Lily Tomlin, Jay Leno, and more.
DAY THREE (CAR NEEDED)
For your last day in Pasadena, switch things up a bit and venture out of the city center. Start the morning with a brisk hike through the Eaton Canyon trail to its refreshing waterfall
and build your appetite for brunch. Upon exiting the trail, head south to the Foothill Restaurant for brunch and a carafe of mimosas. There’s something on the menu to satisfy every palate. From fluffy pancakes to savory crab cake Benedict, or fried chicken and waffles, no one will leave unsatisfied. Conclude your trip with a deep dive into Pasadena’s culture. The Pasadena Museum of History is a gorgeous property that is solely dedicated to allthings Pasadena. For dinner, try Bone Kettle, one of the city’s many Asian-inspired restaurants. Enjoy unique menu items like their famous oxtail dumplings or try their Asian fusion take on brussels sprouts. Of course, no trip to the city of sunshine and roses is complete without a stop at the iconic Rose Bowl Stadium, home to college football’s annual Rose Bowl Game. Known as the Grandaddy of Them All, the Rose Bowl is the oldest currently operating bowl game. If you visit at other times of the year, there may be a concert or international friendly soccer game in town. Taking in an event at the Rose Bowl is an unforgettable experience, and the perfect way to end the night. 55
