Richard Abbott
Rooted in Religion: Morattico Baptist Church + Christ Church Showcase History 10
Visitors & Business Guide to Lancaster County
“
“W
e want to tell the story for the church because we were founded in the midst of the Revolutionary War and have grown up with America,” says Richard Abbott, pastor of Morattico Baptist Church. Abbott has been the pastor for two years and a member for 18 of the “mother of all local Baptist churches.” “The people made me fall in love with it,” he said. “The people were kind and welcoming. I ended up having two children and raised them through the church, as well.” Morattico Baptist Church was constituted on January 7, 1778. By 1843, the church was most likely the largest Baptist church in the world with a membership of 948. According to most accounts, the Northern Neck of Virginia was a lightning rod in the struggle for religious freedom. “Every local Baptist church can trace its roots back to Morratico,” Abbot says. “I want people to know our little church on the hill is significant in its history not just here but all around the world.” When you step into the church, you will be stepping into a building that was built in 1856, true to its original construction. During the pandemic, the physical church was less accessible. Abbot worked to expand church attendance and reach though virtual educational and outdoor worship programs. Facebook Bible studies welcomed 300+ attendees from Florida to Sweden. In Weems, Christ Church also evolved during the pandemic. A weekly history quiz kept the community engaged. Unlike Morattico, Christ Church does not host religious programming. Grace Episcopal Kilmarnock does
host services, weddings, and other religious events at Christ Church. “Our foundation’s mission is preservation, research, and education,” said Executive Director Robert Teagle. “It’s one of America’s great buildings and one of the 18th Century buildings that are this well preserved.” Many visitors come to see the architecture preserved just as it looked in 1735. The sophisticated brick work, the intricate entablature on the roof, and the pristine woodwork inside can be viewed both in-person and online. The museum to the south of the church takes a deeper dive with interactive exhibits about the building and the lives of the people who worshipped here. This summer, visitors can see research in the works and even get dirty to help. To protect the museum from water, the church is installing an underground drainage system. To do this, the church is digging around the building and documenting the artifacts they find. Teagle is hoping to shed light on a wooden church that was once there, uncover new artifacts that can paint a clearer picture of the parishoners of the past. Look out for announcements about cultural dig days to join in on the fun. The museum is gearing up for other events including the Chesapeake History Forum in September, summer history camps for kids, and concerts. Learn more about Christ Church at: www.christchurch1735.org and Morattico Baptist Church at moratticobaptistchurch.org.

From Whiskey Runs to Ecological Sanctuary: The Tides Inn Continues to Evolve O
ne of our region’s most enchanting sunset-watching spots is the Tides Inn. Today, you can order up cocktails like the Lancaster Lemonade and Palomas from the Golden Eagle Grill on the golf course, the Chesapeake Restaurant, and the Fish Hawk restaurant by the pool. The resort even offers mixology classes at Fish Hawk during the summer months. It wasn’t always so easy to order up a drink here, though. The Tides opened in 1947. E.A. Stephens and his wife Ann (aka Big

Steve and Miss Ann) transformed a 25acre farm overlooking Carter’s Creek. The hotel became a beacon for families and couples looking for peace, fun, and riverside elegance. At the time, you couldn’t buy liquor by the drink, meaning it wasn’t legal to walk up and order a mixed drink from a bar. That meant you had to bring your own bottle of liquor to the Tides Inn to enjoy a hard drink. “When the Tides Inn opened, Lancaster County was a dry county, and guests would bring their own liquor to

enjoy,” says Jason Trollip, Managing Director of the Tides Inn. “Their bottles were kept in one of the 100 handmade walnut lockers in the Golden Eagle Room. If you showed up empty handed, the resort hosted guests on a boat ride, called a ‘Whiskey Run’– aboard the 127-foot Miss Ann,” After, The Tides would bring you what was called ‘the set up.’ That included glass, ice, mixers, and garnish. Tides employees would help guests create drinks using the liquor they brought along with them. While

the laws eventually changed, the resort kept up the Whiskey Run as a fun homage to the past for many years. On July 15, 2022, the Tides Inn celebrates its 75th Anniversary in Lancaster County. Today, you can still see the lockers at the Tides Inn, but you can freely order a variety of cocktails. More recently, the Tides Inn has integrated more of the ecological history and heritage into the guest experience through the newly unveiled Shoreline Restoration. The Tides is situated on Carter’s Creek, a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay estuary. More than 3,000 migratory and wildlife species, including blue crabs and oysters call it home. In 2021, the Tides embarked on a $3.6 million restoration in collaboration with Friends of the Rappahannock (FOR). The complete beach restoration and 18,000 square feet of “living shoreline” wrapped up its inaugural phase in Summer 2021, including development of a curvilinear wharf and nature trail. As the shoreline restoration progresses, hands-on experiences including the Chesapeake Gold oyster excursion allow guests to dive into the history and ecology of one of the Chesapeake Bay watershed guided by the property’s ecologist, Will Smiley. You can board a traditional watermen’s boat, shuck oysters like a pro, learn how oysters are a keystone species, visit an oyster farm, pull up oyster cages, and more. Full Steam
A Cruise Through History with the Steamboat Era Museum
16
Visitors & Business Guide to Lancaster County
Steamboats started cruising down the Rappahannock River in 1827.
L
ancaster County owes much of its history to the Steamboat. These boats connected the Northern Neck bound by three bodies of water – the Potomac River, the Chesapeake Bay, and the Rappahannock River. At first, sailboats connected these areas. “But men wanted to go faster, and on a timetable,” says Museum Manager Candee Pevahouse. “Steam pumps and engines were developed and in use in England and Wales since 1698, but no one yet thought of putting one on a boat.” In 1807, Robert Fulton designed a boat with a steam engine, ushering a revolution in water transportation. In the Chesapeake Bay, the first steamboat steamed out of Baltimore in 1813 and traveled to Elkton MD. Steamboats started cruising down the Rappahannock River in 1827. By 1870, there were 40 “steamers” on the Bay and rivers. Stores and canneries were built near the steamboat wharves, oyster shucking houses and warehouses sprung up. With regular service from the steamers, newspapers and mail arrived in a timely manner to connect the region to the world. Produce, oysters, crabs, and fish were fresher when they arrived at the market and therefore earned locals a higher income. Travel for pleasure grew, too, leading travelers to places like the Tides Inn. “When a steamer neared a wharf, she blew her distinctive whistle,” Pevahouse says. “Townsfolk heard the whistle and hurried to the wharf to watch the comings and goings of people and goods that could not be made on the Northern Neck, such as cast-iron stoves, shoes, farm equipment, dolls, shingles,
fabrics and lace, and the latest fashions. Next, they loaded on the items the farmers and watermen produced such eggs, chickens, cattle, pigs, oysters on ice, canned vegetables, fish, and fish roe.” The 1900s welcomed another revolution in transportation and communication – the first flight in 1903, the Model T in 1908, buses in the 1920s. That led to the dwindling prevalence of the Steamboat. By the 1920s, there were fewer than 15 steamers on the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers. A bridge to Tappahannock was built in 1927 and the stock market crashed in 1929, which led to the final demise of steamboat companies. Once busy wharves went unused and fell into ruin. “The final strike against the steamers was the 1933 hurricane that travelled up the Chesapeake Bay, causing 10–12-foot storm surges and destroying property, crops, boats, houses, and those decaying wharves,” Pevahouse says. The last steamboat on the Rappahannock River took a farewell tour September 14-15, 1937. All of this history and more is encapsulated in interactive exhibits at the Steamboat Era Museum in Irvington. “I was impressed with the volunteers and their dedication to keeping alive the story of life during the time of the steamboats as they had many personal stories of their families during that era,” says Pevahouse, who first started as a volunteer at the museum. Recently reopened after closing during the pandemic, the newest exciting exhibit is the Pilothouse. It is the largest surviving remnant of the
Chesapeake Bay steamboat era from the steamer “Potomac.” The pilothouse was the steamboat’s upper most structure, which consisted of the wheelhouse, captain’s quarter, and crew quarters. The Potomac was 176 feet in length, 41 feet at the beam, featured 37 staterooms, and a crew of 36. The history of the steamboat is accessible and fun for all ages here. Historical Hope & Glory Inn Launches New Micro Vineyard

Visitors & Business Guide to Lancaster County
Dudley and Peggy Patteson
W
hen you stroll through Irvington, your feet will inevitably lead you to the Hope & Glory Inn. The dreamy boutique hotel holds its own special place in Lancaster history and is making history with new and exciting changes this year. The Hope & Glory’s story begins in 1889, when it was originally built and opened as The Chesapeake Male and Female Academy. While some students came to school on horse and buggy or even steamboat, students also stayed in dormitories – steamboat and horse and buggy were an expensive and timeconsuming means of transportation. The school earned a reputation for its graduates, some of whom went on to become a Rhodes Scholar, President of Hollins College (now University), Attorney General for the State of Virginia, and the Managing Editor of the New York Times. After the school closed in 1908. Eventually it opened as a rooming house called “King Carter Inn.” In 1995-1996, it became The Hope & Glory Inn. Seventeen years ago, Peggy
and Dudley Patteson made it their own and the couple have integrated the school house past into the experience. The bar is named “Detentio” and the farm-to-table restaurant is known as the “Dining Hall.” Other new whimsical flourishes add modern magic including inspirational quotes along the walkway to its cottages behind the main house. There is an outdoor bath tucked away for an alfresco bathing experience. “We want to do things that nobody is doing here,” says Dudley. This summer, there’s more new magic that is sure to make history. The Pattesons are bringing a micro vineyard to life right on site. Since the closing of its sister property down the road, Dog & Oyster Vineyard, Dudley said he wanted to keep the unique oyster and wine experience alive. So, he’s planted his first Petite Menseng grape vines in the front of the Inn, hoisted a chic 20 x 40-foot tent for enjoying food and wine, and erected an oyster bar and wine bar. “The Hope & Glory is Lancaster history and we hope to embody all the region has to offer – laid back luxury,
high quality food, and Virginia wine,” Dudley says. In addition to new wine and oyster offerings, guests and visitors can still enjoy Chef Meseret’s highly acclaimed food in The Colonnade and outside. Learn more about dining and staying at the Hope & Glory Inn: hopeandglory.com.

Visitors & Business Guide to Lancaster County
Irvington is a village of about 400 residences that reflects coastal “Americana” at its best – and it’s all within an easy drive of Washington, DC, Northern Virginia, Baltimore – Annapolis, Richmond and Hampton Roads. Irvington has much to offer – from watching osprey, eagles and herons nesting and hunting along Carter’s Creek to cheering on sailboats racing; from gathering locally grown flowers, vegetables, and folk art from the town’s award-winning Farmers Market to dining on fresh fish and Rappahannock River oysters, famous Chesapeake Bay blue crabs and medalwinning wines from the village vineyard. Visitors can explore museums, walk or bike Irvington’s residential area of architecturally diverse homes, many of which are entered in the Virginia and National Register of Historic Places, or just relax and enjoy the view. Irvington itself is a place where visitors are encouraged to “Explore America’s Quintessential Coastal Village” with a curated itinerary to see and experience Irvington at its finest. Coastal Living magazine designated Irvington as one of their “20 Best Places to Live on the Coast” in their Spring 2020 "Escape Issue." Come stay at the award winning accommodations at the The Tides Inn or Hope & Glory Inn, or a local privately owned vacation rental.

History Meets Fitness
Two Studios Have a Storied Past T here are a few ways to get out and stretch your legs in the Lancaster area – on a boat, during a hike, paddling a kayak, or even a little shopping. To help you move with purpose, Niche Pilates and BodyFit can help. Both of these fitness studios are relatively new to the area, but are set in buildings with storied pasts. Niche Pilates soft-opened in January 2022 and officially in April. This is a second location for the Richmondbased business. Owner Jaclyn Forrester began visualizing expanding to Irvington during the first year of the pandemic when she and her husband Brian moved to the area.

“I love the sense of community here and I wanted to be a part of helping it grow,” she says. “We’re so excited about how the historic space has transformed and the people we’re starting to welcome into it.” The space (235 Steamboat Road) was once the Irvington Town Hall. Before that, it was a public library. “When we got in there you could see where the bookshelves once were,” she said. Other signs of memories built into the building included old Irvington 4th of July Parade signs, original wood siding, remnants of an old tin roof, vinyl tile, and more. Forrester worked with

contractors to update the 8-foot ceiling to create an airy vaulted ceiling with beams. “You can still see the character of the building, but we’ve made it ours,” she said. “We hope this space becomes something that could be used both for bringing the community together and showing them that this type of movement can be accessible for everybody.” Before Niche opened in 2022, however, Jaclyn and her reformers had a temporary home at BodyFit, a 24/7 fitness studio and gym. Ramona Darden and her team of instructors
offer exercise classes, personal training, and community events inside an old building that was once a firehouse, then a town hall, and then a school. “My office was a fifth-grade classroom,” Darden says. She walks through other areas that have been transformed since she renovated and opened the 2,700 squarefoot space in 2009—a school cafeteria, a home economics building with instructional pictures still on the walls, a trophy room, fire truck loading area. Like Forrester, Darden also opened up the ceilings to bring the gym space up to a breathable 15-foot height.
After working on renovations and growth for the past few years, Darden says she’s glad to have the space up and running the way she imagined it. The studio’s is will launching barre classes this year to round out its diverse group class offerings. “I’ve been embraced by this little community and it feels great,” she says. “I want to keep showing everyone how much we care.” Learn more about BodyFit at www.bodyfitva.com and Niche Pilates Studio at nichefitstudio.com.

MARGARET NOST
Business Person of the Year Leaves Lasting Impact in Lancaster
L
ike many couples who move to Lancaster County, Margaret Nost and her husband left the bustling suburbs to raise their children by the peaceful waters and in a caring, close community. It wasn’t part of her plan but one day, Nost would care for more than her children here. She would nurture the entire region. For this work Nost was honored as the Business Person of the Year. Nost left a career in banking behind when she and her husband moved to West Point. She enrolled her children in Chesapeake Academy, which is where she eventually began working and making an impact in Lancaster. Her first nonprofit job as Development Director wasn’t far from her banking experience, she says. “It’s really all about helping people making a difference with their money,” she said. “I learned just how many generous people there are here in this community.” In 2002, she joined the staff of the Community Foundation for a greater Richmond in a part-time role to shepherd the early growth and development of three regional affiliate foundations – the Gloucester Community Foundation, the Mathews
Community Foundation, and the River Counties Community Foundation. Together, they serve five counties in the Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck. “There’s so much need for foundation support here because you don’t have the resources of a big county or city government,” she says. Also different from metropolitan areas, foundation staff and leaders like Nost are driven to work to help the families they see every day at the market, down the road, and in the grocery store. For 20 years, she worked to connect other compassionate community leaders, donors, and volunteers to build up resources around the region. Most recently, her efforts were focused on filling gaps in the community during the pandemic. “I was proud of how we were able to quickly shift when COVID hit,” she said. “We were in the middle of a grant cycle and so much changed--free clinics were overwhelmed, important community hubs closed, and the schools really needed help.” Nost’s background in banking and an inherent ability to connect with people helped grow its assets “from an initial $25,000 donor gift to almost $30 million. Accordingly, the
awarded annual grants have grown from $1,500.00 during that first year to more than a million dollars last year to our local non-profits,” said Mary Kay Rotert, past-president of the River Counties Community Foundation. Some of those grants came from an expanded Emergency Fund Nost helped establish. The fund grew to provide “rapid response grants” to local nonprofits faced with increased challenges and needs during the COVID pandemic. Margaret’s philosophy is that “we are investing in our community – not just giving money away,” says Rotert. “Margaret is the face of the Community Foundation in Gloucester, Mathews, Lancaster, Middlesex and Northumberland Counties,” said Sherrie Armstrong, CEO of the Community Foundation for a greater Richmond, which provides financial and administrative support for the affiliate foundations. “We join these communities in honoring Margaret’s dedication to and vision for philanthropy in the region and her ability to build partnerships for the greater good.” After nearly 20 years serving as Regional Affiliate Director, Margaret Nost has announced her plans to retire at the end of January. www.lancasterva.com

Volunteer of the Year: WILLIAM SMITH of Blue Ridge Bank T
his banker was born and raised in the Lancaster area. In fact, William Smith is a third generation local. He left town only to attend James Madison University after which he returned to build his career, his family, and the entire community along the way. Since 2015, Smith has served as the Vice President and Commercial Lending Officer of Blue Ridge Bank. He’s also the current Treasurer for the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce and has been a Board Member since 2016. “He is willing to do whatever needs to be done to ensure the success of all of the chamber’s activities,” says executive director Anne Paparella. Among other volunteer roles over the years, Smith has served as President of Board for The Lancaster Community Library, President of Kilmarnock Chamber of Commerce, and attends and volunteers at the White Stone Church of Nazarene, where he’s well
known for making 200+ pancakes every month for a community breakfast. Smith has also chaired the Kilmarnock Lighted Christmas Parade and has been a key volunteer at Taste by the Bay while enlisting the help of others along the way. Smith, who lives with his wife Cathy in Kilmarnock, is father to three adult children. During the 14 years he’s been banking in the region, his favorite part of his career has been “working with independent business owners and helping them increase their capacity and reach their dreams.” “One of the neat things is that I can be working with a farmer in the morning and with a business executive in the afternoon,” Smith says. “We have business owners of all dimensions.” The diversity of the region is its strength, he said. This strength was needed during the pandemic. Hundreds of small businesses in the area received
assistance through loans that Blue Ridge Bank administered. “We think we are through the rough part of COVID and entering the exciting part, which is when social functions are back on the calendar, businesses are opening back up, and fundraisers can start helping us raise important funds again.” Smith and Blue Ridge Bank are regular supporters of these signature community events. “We want to be involved in the community we are serving,” he says. “It’s apparent here that everyone is connected … not only are the individuals I work with my customers, they are my friends and my neighbors I interact within on a daily basis. We’re all rolling up sleeves working on same goal making Lancaster County a better to place to live.”
