Below, discover four (of many) unforgettable festivals worth marking your calendars for in 2019.

Visitors & Business Guide to Lancaster County

Taste by the Bay

Taste by the Bay: Wine, Food, Arts, and Ale Nothing ushers in the start of the holiday season quite like an afternoon at Taste by the Bay, brought to the Tides Inn by the Lancaster by the Bay Chamber of Commerce as their signature event. Scheduled each year the weekend before Thanksgiving, the festival boasts premier food and drink offerings, top-notch shopping experiences, and live music – all with a local flair. “Taste by the Bay is quite the luxury event, in my opinion,” shares event chairman Joanna Marchetti. “Topnotch artisan vendors for fabulous shopping, many wineries that pour six to eight varietals each, high quality restaurant vendors, and such talented musicians – all in the picturesque setting of the world class Tides Inn resort…it’s classy and fun and appeals to both locals and out of towners.” True to its name, the centerpiece of the festival is its local food and drink tastings. Guests enjoy delicious food samples from popular local restaurants, like Byrd’s Seafood, Country Cottage, Cora’s Kitchen, and Rappahannock River Oysters. To wash them down, area wineries, such as The Dog & Oyster Vineyard and Good Luck Cellars, offer tastes of their signature varietals, and Virginia brewers, including Starr Hill and Hardywood, serve refreshing craft beer.

But perhaps the most appealing aspect of Taste by the Bay is the elevated, one-of-a-kind experience that it brings to a small, Virginia community. “Part of the fun of creating this event has always been the opportunity to bring things to the area for others to enjoy,” shares Marchetti. “It’s a small town and sometimes, if you want something here, you have to help generate it yourself.” Saturday, November 23, 2019; 11:00am–5:00pm Tickets – $30 in advance, $35 at the door

“Raise the Roof” Craft Beer Fest

Approaching its highly anticipated sixth season, this popular local beer festival is putting its host venue, Historic Christ Church & Museum, on the map in a big way. The event initially began in July 2014 as a means to promote the National Historic Landmark and educate visitors on a major, upcoming roof preservation project. Featuring a dozen craft beers,

locally-made BBQ and homemade ice cream, live music, and tours of the church and museum, the festival was an instant success. “The first year we sold over 500 tickets,” shares Robert Teagle, Director of Programs & Communications for the Foundation for Historic Christ Church. “Local band James Justin & Company drew a good crowd of all ages and had everyone out on the dance floor by the end of the night. People left that first year saying, ‘Please do this again. We had an awesome time.’” At the community’s urging, a dedicated team of Historic Christ Church & Museum staff and volunteers have since continued the historical site’s new annual tradition, keeping the event’s original name as a tribute to its origin. And, while a diverse beer menu (summer and pale ales, Pilsners, IPAs, and stouts), souvenir pint glasses, and flat fee tickets make this event a beer lover’s paradise, it’s more than just the brews that keep folks coming back year after year. “Overall, I think the unique setting, the laid-back atmosphere, and the great beer, music, and food give Raise the Roof a special vibe among regional beer fests,” shares Teagle. “Where else can you listen to blues and jazz while sipping a cold beer in the shadow of one of the greatest buildings in colonial America?” Saturday, July 13, 2019; 1:00pm–6:00pm Tickets – Adult: $55, Under 21: $20, 5 and under: Free www.lancasterva.com

The Tides Spring Festival is always a hit, rain or shine.

Irvington Crab Festival

If a warm, August evening spent picking through bushels of freshly steamed crabs sounds like your idea of a good time, then be sure to add this local summertime highlight to your festival bucket list. The event, an annual fundraiser for Irvington’s beloved Steamboat Era Museum, is held on the Irvington Commons under the cool shade of a big top tent. Each year, 500+ guests gather to savor the region’s signature Chesapeake Bay crabs, washing them down with cold beer and wine offerings. In addition to a mouthwatering meal, attendees also enjoy strolling through the nearby Steamboat Era Museum and perusing current exhibits (new this year is the muchanticipated Potomac Pilothouse) and placing bids at the festival’s silent auction. Saturday, August 10, 2019; Doors open at 4:00pm, crabs served at 5:00pm

The Tides Spring Festival

Held annually on the waterfront grounds of Irvington’s storied Tides Inn, the Tides Spring Festival attracts droves of 10

locals and tourists alike, and for good reason. Admission to this daylong event includes an assortment of offerings and experiences, such as unlimited craft beer and Virginia wine samples, the opportunity to “Try Sailing” with local sailing school Premier Sailing, and a keepsake tasting glass. When hunger strikes, guests can enjoy a mouthwatering selection of food (available for purchase) and, afterwards, peruse local artisans’ booths stocked with a variety of gifts, apparel and accessories, and homegrown produce. All the while, live music is featured throughout the event, setting a spirited tone for one of the area’s must-try spring festivals. Saturday, April 13, 2019; 11:00am–5:00pm Tickets – Over 21: $35; Under 21/Designated Drivers: $20

Wait there’s more!

Don’t forget to check out these other popular Northern Neck festivals: Boots & BBQ (Northern Neck Land Conservancy), the Chesapeake Academy Oyster Roast, Shuckin’ and Jivin’ on the Lancaster Green (Lancaster Virginia Historical Society -Mary Ball Washington Museum & Library), and the Northern Neck Family YMCA Festival of Trees. n

Chamber Spotlight

Terri Wesselman & Julien Patterson BUSINESS PERSONS OF THE YEAR

J

ulien Patterson and Terri Wesselman retired and moved to Lancaster County in 2012, but quickly realized they were not ready for retirement. Julien has said, “For me, I think retirement is the change in venue that allows you to do the things you want to do that benefit others and brings you satisfaction and a sense of well-being.” The nominations for Julien and Terri spoke highly of both their business leadership as well as the contributions they have made to the community and various charitable organizations and boards in the Northern Neck. Julien, a former chairman of the Virginia Economic Development Partnership and the Virginia Chamber of Commerce, and Terri, who served as the Chief Executive Officer and President of OMNIPLEX World Services Corporation until June 2013, say their aim is to create jobs and stimulate the local economy, which they have both been doing very well. Terri and Julien have endeavored to set the example by opening five small businesses which have created job opportunities and contributed to the tax base. Both are hopeful that their efforts, and those of others, will create a ripple effect. Observing that the Northern Neck is an idyllic setting to live, work, play or retire, Julien notes that meaningful economic development measures and accomplishments are critical elements for continued success, now more than ever. He has spoken to many of the area’s youth groups and his message is inspirational – “…

first, do the right thing, stress the importance of valuing integrity and one’s moral reputation over the outward signs of success. Second, have the right values, and stress the necessity of putting those values into practice by adopting one’s own personal creed. Third, make the right decisions, emphasize staying true to your core values using tools such as the Rotary International’s 4-way test for decisionmaking.” Prior to relocating to the area, Julien and Terri owned a security and investigative firm based in Chantilly, Virginia, which they sold in 2012. In 2013 under their company Omni Design Group, Inc., they launched their first business in the area, Objects, Art & More Gallery. They have since started other businesses in the Northern Neck: a children’s store & table top/home décor store in Irvington; Front Porch Coffeehouse in Kilmarnock; Weekends, a clothing store in Kilmarnock; and The Office Café, which recently opened in Irvington in the former Dr. Westbrook dentist office. They are also involved in several other business ventures in Florida, where they reside full-time. Julien and Terri were honored at the Chamber’s Annual Dinner at Indian Creek Yacht and Country Club February 2, 2019 The Lancaster by the Bay Chamber of Commerce wishes to thank Terri and Julien for all their endeavors that are enhancing our local economy and look forward to future projects. n

Visitors & Business Guide to Lancaster County

Before opening Dredge in Irvington, Chef Bryan Byrd served his famous oyster tacos out of his “Shuck Truck.”

White Stone

Adrift Restaurant – Owners Devin and Kati Rose had one mission when opening Adrift’s doors in April 2018: to showcase the Northern Neck’s bounty of fresh, homegrown and hand-caught ingredients. Today, the duo boasts a fine, coastal dining experience featuring three- and five-course dinners with rotating dishes like dry-aged ribeye and locally-sourced scallops. They also offer a condensed bar menu (think charcuterie boards and baked oysters), and brunch, a guest favorite, complete with scratch-made specialties. 572 Rappahannock Drive, White Stone www.adriftva.com

Sandpiper Restaurant – Since first opening its doors in 1982, this White Stone mainstay has been known throughout the Northern Neck as a go-to spot for delicious land and sea dishes, such as Filet Mignon, Sandpiper Rib Eye, Beer Battered Shrimp, and Fresh Oysters. Today, on the heels of a recent ownership transition to longtime team member Gina Stump, the restaurant’s reputation for locally

sourced ingredients (from suppliers like Miss Mary Fresh Seafood Market and Dug In Farms), refreshing drinks, and top-notch service remains as strong as ever. If you’re a fan of fresh, scrumptious food, the Sandpiper will not disappoint. 850 Rappahannock Drive, White Stone

Willaby’s Café – A local gathering spot since 1992, this casual eatery has transitioned from a lunch-only establishment to serving dinner and Sunday brunch, too. The restaurant sits on prime real estate – a picturesque plot on the banks of the Rappahannock River – and diners enjoy stunning waterfront views while devouring the café’s array of appetizing dishes, including sandwiches and burgers, soups and salads, pastas, meats, and locallycaught seafood. Night owls also flock to Willaby’s for their live music scene – stop by on Thursdays (7:00pm–9:00pm) or Fridays (8:00pm–11:00pm) to hear everything from folk and country to blues and rock n’ roll. 327 Old Ferry Road, White Stone www.willabys.com

Looking to watch the big game with a fun group during the day, or put on your dancing shoes for a night out? Maybe you’d love a more formal dining experience in a quaint Irish pub? Be sure to check out White Stone’s newest establishment The 606 Featuring The Quays and Walkabout Creek, located at 606 Chesapeake Drive in White Stone.

Irvington

Byrd’s Seafood Co. – If fresh, Chesapeake Bay seafood makes your mouth water, pay a visit to Chef Bryan Byrd’s food truck, “The Shuck Truck.” The mobile restaurant regularly sets up shop at different locations throughout the area (check their Facebook page to track the truck’s whereabouts) and serves up a menu of locally-caught favorites, including fried oyster tacos, soft shell crabs, and beer steamed shrimp. Follow Byrd’s Seafood Co. on Facebook for a rundown of their daily hours and whereabouts.

The Tides Inn – You don’t have to be a guest of this internationally acclaimed resort to enjoy a meal at one of its five in-house restaurants. Both vacationers and locals alike swoon over The Tides Inn’s “tide to table” dining experiences made all the more authentic by the breathtaking views of the Tides Marina and Carter’s Creek visible from most restaurants. Whether you’re craving a quick sandwich (try the Golden Eagle Grill or the Commodore’s) or locally-sourced seafood (head to the Chesapeake Restaurant), The Tides Inn’s top-notch eateries and menu offerings are sure to please. 480 King Carter Drive, Irvington www.tidesinn.com

In addition to burgers, their menu is full of other all-American favorites, including craft sandwiches and salads, creamy milkshakes, and the restaurant’s signature Northern Neck Twister Chips (made with ribbon-cut potatoes and doused in your choice of toppings). 62 Irvington Road, Kilmarnock www.nnburger.com

Enjoy a low-key meal in the restaurant’s cozy dining room or, for those in a rush, place a carry-out order through their convenient online ordering platform. 36 North Main Street, Kilmarnock

The Dub Shack – This downtown spot is the best of both worlds: a cozy restaurant boasting fresh, locally-sourced offerings (think salads, sandwiches, pastas, meats, and seafood dishes) and a neighborhood watering hole equipped with large, flat screen TVs and a musttry bar menu. Drink and Be Merry

Discover Lancaster County’s Top Wineries, Breweries, and Cideries By Jessica Frere

Calling all fans of ice-cold brews and from-the-vine wines! In the Northern Neck, nothing signals “rivah time” quite like a refreshing libation, particularly ones that are locally-made. Luckily, Lancaster County is home to several leading wineries, breweries, and cideries that are sure to quench the thirsts of drink enthusiasts. Read on to discover four of the area’s most popular beverage producers. 22

The Dog & Oyster Vineyard At first glance, it’s clear that this acclaimed, Irvington staple isn’t quite like other vineyards. For starters, the world’s largest corkscrews flank its entrance and a slew of amiable rescue dogs freely roam the premises warding off grape-loving deer. However, a closer look at The Dog & Oyster will prove that its uniqueness isn’t just found at surface level – it’s at the core of this award-winning vineyard. The cornerstone of this establishment is its top-notch wines, which have perennially received medals from the likes of the San Francisco International Wine Competition and the Virginia Governor’s Cup and are produced from the vineyard’s six acres of vinifera. Guest are encouraged to sample the winery’s Chardonel, Vidal Blanc, Chambourcin, and Merlot varietals at SIP, the inhouse tasting room, or in warmer weather, at SLURP, an alfresco pergola. As a compliment to the wine, SLURP also serves a mouthwatering selection of raw, roasted, and fried Chesapeake Bay oysters, a guest favorite. “Oysters and wine each reflect a sense of place,” shares owner Dudley

Patterson. “The terroir of our grapes is the same as the merroir of the local oysters we serve. We are one of only a handful of places in the world that can offer the ‘perfect pairing.’” As an added bonus, Patterson also owns and operates the famed Hope & Glory Inn, located just a stone’s throw away from The Dog & Oyster, making it the perfect spot for out-of-towners to mosey back to after a relaxing day at the vineyard. 170 White Fences Drive, Irvington www.hopeandglory.com

Good Luck Cellars You might say that, for Good Luck Cellars’ owners Paul and Katie Krop, operating a vineyard and winery was a fitting career progression. After former jobs in medicine, the husband-wife team was drawn to the fields of science and chemistry, both of which are also integral components of winemaking. For fun, they began producing batches of homemade wine using fruits from their backyard garden and enjoyed the process so much that they decided to turn their pastime into a business. When a sand and gravel-laden plot

of land (ideal for growing grapevines) became available near Kilmarnock, the duo seized the opportunity, and Good Luck Cellars was born. Today, the winery is a beloved community gathering spot. Guests enjoy sampling vineyard varietals (recent offerings include Viognier, Cabernet Franc, and Radiant Red) in the tasting room and attending Wine Down Fridays (often complimented by live music and on-site food trucks). In addition, members of Good Luck Cellars’ quarterly wine club delight in a rotating selection of hand-picked bottles and get first dibs on new vineyard harvests – an insider experience fit for wine enthusiasts. 1025 Goodluck Road, Kilmarnock www.goodluckcellars.com

Ditchley Cider Works What started as a small-scale retirement project has morphed into something much greater for Ditchley Cider Works co-owners Cathy Calhoun and husband Paul Grosklags. The pair purchased the historic, 162-acre cidery property in 2014 and immediately planted 2,000 heritage cider apple trees and renovated the estate’s 1752 manor house. www.lancasterva.com

23

Today, the couple grows 60 different types of apples, 90% of which are used to produce their signature cider blends best enjoyed through Ditchley’s Cider Club, a quarterly offering of seasonally rotating ciders and members-only special events. In addition to a cidery, Ditchley Cider Works is also a working farm. Calhoun and Grosklags enlist the help of Indian Runner ducks to keep insects at bay in the orchard, hogs to eliminate brush, and Belted Galloway beef cattle to trim unruly pasture grasses. The animals, in turn, provide a tasty, GMOfree compliment to the cidery’s beverage offerings. “All of the animal products are processed and sold through meat share clubs alongside our cider club,” shares Calhoun. As their popularity continues to grow, Calhoun and Grosklags maintain high hopes for their business in 2019. In addition to hosting sausage and baconmaking classes and recurring cider tastings at nearby Dug In Farms this year, they plan to launch a new, highly anticipated service offering: a romantic, on-site wedding venue with overnight accommodations. 1571 Ditchley Road, Kilmarnock www.DitchleyCiderWorks.com

Kilmarnock Brewhaus >

New to downtown Kilmarnock, Kilmarnock Brewhaus is a craft beer lover’s oasis, offering a thirstquenching selection of house-made brews (favorites include Edelweiss IPA, Peach Shandy, and Backyard Barbeque Beer). While they do not currently provide food service (here, beer is king), this local watering hole encourages guests to bring their own meals and snacks to munch on and often has food trucks conveniently parked outside of the building. As an added bonus, the Brewhaus hosts a rotating selection of local, live music acts, turning each visit to this good-time spot into a lively, unforgettable occasion. 44 West Church Street, Kilmarnock www.kilmarnockbrewhaus.com

for Promoting Youth Participation in Extracurricular Activities in Lancaster and Northumberland Counties Starting in January 2018, a new transportation option was offered to families living in the River Road area of upper Lancaster County. Children and youth may ride the bus from the Club beginning at 6 PM and will be dropped off at one of four locations: three churches (Beulah Baptist, Queen Esther Baptist, Hartswell Baptist) and the intersection of Morrattico Road and River Road near the Moose Lodge. At each of these locations parents or other driver may pick their children up at a scheduled time. Round trip transportation for this area will be offered in the summer (pick up at 8 AM, drop-off at 5:30 PM). Interested parents should contact the Club office.

The Club is closed on the actual national holiday. During bad weather, such as school closings for snow, the Club does what it can to make entrances and exits accessible and safe and then contacts parents to let them know the Club is open. It is then up to the parents to decide if they can safely bring their children to the Club. AGE FOR PARTICIPATION: Children and youth must be between the ages of 6 and 18. However, the Club accepts children slightly younger than 6 if they are at the beginning of the school semester and their birthday is within two months. In the course of a week in the after-school program, youth will rotate through offerings in these areas, some of which are mandatory and some of which are voluntary (for example, field trips and special programs). Within each of the five categories, age-appropriate options are offered. Snacks are provided. TRANSPORTATION (no additional cost): The Club owns two school buses and a smaller activity bus. Youth can be picked up from the Lancaster County Schools and brought to the Club each afternoon. Parents need to pick up their children by 7 PM.

Eat Fresh

Taste the Northern Neck’s Signature Produce & Seafood By Jessica Frere

Here in Virginia’s River Realm, fresh food is king. From crisp vegetables to sweet, juicy fruits to same-day harvested seafood, the region is brimming with an abundance of homegrown, freshly-sourced provisions. But in order to taste them, you first must know where to find them. Here, we share two local farm and sea-to-table suppliers whose fresh harvests are a glowing testament to the area’s fertile farmlands and rich waterways. But don’t take our word for it. Swing by both, and taste for yourself. 36

Visitors & Business Guide to Lancaster County

Dug In Farms

Venture down Fleet’s Bay Road, nestled between the towns of Kilmarnock and White Stone, and you will stumble upon Dug In Farms, the only working farm and full-service farm market combination in the lower Northern Neck. Owner Carolyn Quinn started the operation in spring 2015 after deciding to transition from gardening to professional farming. “As a single person, I wasn’t able to grow and sell at the same time,” says Quinn. “So, I put out a picnic table, a couple of coolers, and a ‘honor’ cash box at the end of the driveway. The community was hugely supportive, and that first year I always had more in the honor box than I should have.” From that point forward, business boomed. In 2016, in response to increased demand for her offerings, Quinn erected a larger, makeshift vegetable stand on a boat trailer. Two years later, she transitioned once again into the farm market’s current location, a 1,100 square foot building. This move provided Quinn with muchneeded, additional space to showcase the market’s selection of chemical-free, organically grown produce and berries, freshly cut flowers, locally-made baked and prepared foods, and artisanal crafts and gifts. Today, Dug In Farms is a thriving community fixture. In an effort to fully support regional farm-totable restaurateurs and fresh food connoisseurs, the farm market is open for business six days per week, 10 months each year and boasts an ample assortment of seasonally rotating wares. While many Dug In regulars relish the farm’s ever-changing offerings, they also stand by several, all-time favorite products. Some of Quinn’s most popular wares? “Specialty salad mixes and our fresh greens,” shares Quinn. “You’ll forever be a convert to eating fresh, local, and green!” Customers also rave about Dug In Farms’ striking cut sunflowers, a variety that remains vibrant and upright for 10+ days. “We plant 2,000 sunflowers every week for 25 weeks in order to supply customers with these stunning beauties all year long,” says Quinn.

In addition to furnishing the region with locally grown produce and wares, Quinn also hopes to promote a community-centric, educational approach to farming and fresh food. To this end, the farm hosts a variety of monthly activities that are all open to the public, including photography competitions, farm tours, Plein Air painting classes, an Easter celebration, and Ditchley Cider Works sponsored hard cider tastings. New in 2019, Virginia State University will sponsor two Dug In Farms farming courses, a unique opportunity to foster a passion for agriculture and fresh food in a new generation. 155 Fleet’s Bay Road, White Stone www.duginfarms.com

Rappahannock River Oyster Company

Before its restaurants were lauded by world-renowned publications (think The Wall Street Journal, the Michelin Guide, The Washingtonian, and People Magazine), and before its signature bivalves were served on a national scale, the Rappahannock Oyster Company was simply a family-owned, Middle Peninsula-based oyster company on a mission to revive the Chesapeake Bay’s declining shellfish population and “celebrate good food grown well.” Opened in 2001 following the Bay’s lowest recorded oyster harvest in history, the business was a risky move for owners and cousins Travis and Ryan Croxton. However, the duo was determined to continue the Croxton legacy (oyster farming has been a family tradition since 1899) and simultaneously help to revitalize a dying Virginia industry. Slowly but surely, they have achieved both goals.

From its outset, the company has prioritized sustainable, healthy oyster growing and harvesting which, in turn, has contributed to the Bay’s steadily rising oyster population and Virginia’s current status as an East Coast leader in oyster production. In honor of the oyster’s comeback and the myriad of supporters of sustainable aquaculture, the Croxtons opened the doors of their first restaurant, Merroir, in 2011 and have since introduced five more in Richmond, Washington, D.C., Charleston, S.C., and Los Angeles. Naturally, the culinary star in each establishment is the Chesapeake Bay’s native oyster. Eager to sample Rappahannock River Oyster Company’s highly praised cuisine? Head to nearby Merroir (784 Locklies Creek Road, Topping, Virginia), where all menu items, prepared raw or on an outdoor grill, are served tasting-style. The company also supplies their oysters wholesale and is available for event catering. www.rroysters.com

Can’t get enough fresh, local food?

Visit Gus at Bluewater Seafood and Deli in Kilmarnock, and take home the best fresh seafood, deli items and wine. Head to the Irvington Farmers Market in the Town Commons every first Saturday of the month from May through November (9:00am–1:00pm) and the Kilmarnock Farmer’s Market at Town Centre Park every fourth Saturday of the month from May through October (9:00am–1:00pm). Both markets boast a variety of homegrown and locally-sourced produce and seafood products as well as artisanal meats and cheeses, breads and baked goods. ■
