For over 300 years, White Stone, Virginia has been the Southern Gateway to the Northern Neck, and specifically Lancaster County. Located where the Rappahannock River meets the Chesapeake Bay, White Stone is named for the white ballast stones dumped in creek beds and left by the British as they unloaded their ballast during the colonial period. The local waterways are imperative to the White Stone community, for play and work. Nathan Everett, owner of a wholesale and retail seafood distributor Still Kickin’ Seafood says “White Stone and its efficiency, from Antipoison Creek to the Chesapeake Bay, and the Rappahannock River, offer a lot of diversity within the waterways, and economic productivity with ease of access to the Norris Bridge for distribution.”
White Stone was incorporated in 1953 and recently received a $1,000,000 grant from the Virginia Department of Housing & Community Development to revitalize the business district. This grant focuses on the Business District Revitalization Plan, a Revolving Loan Fund to assist businesses with workforce needs, and the rehabilitation of seven apartments. You can already see this grant in operation as buildings begin to be adorned in murals representing local history and lifestyles.
White Stone is a 10-minute drive from several nightly or weekly rentals, so you can indulge in the town’s culinary delights and activities. With a handful of restaurants and sweet shops to choose from, there is also the option to stock up on local goods provided by The River Market, Miss Mary Seafood, and Country Cottage
In the crossroads you can always plan to leave with a new dress from The Pink Lemon boutique and your stomach in stitches after attending a show at The Lancaster Players theater.
The Town of White Stone extends a warm invitation to tourists, inviting them to explore its unique businesses and create lasting memories of a delightful visit.
Irvington visitors can experience the town’s cozy ambiance, even on a rainy day. Once the heart of a busy steamboat port during the 1890’s through early 1900’s, the town has shifted and stretched into a spirited community of quaint shops, restaurants, and professional offices. In the town’s steamboat days, such businesses were chiefly situated along Carter’s Creek. A fire in 1917 wiped out most of Irvington, and then the ending of the steamboat era slowed things down drastically. Over time the community has rebuilt, and businesses have become concentrated at the center of town.
Today, Irvington is a charming, quiet area where people stop and chat, kids walk to school, and the post office is bustling at noon. The light vehicle traffic through town makes a leisurely walk truly pleasant, and the assortment of shops and businesses
safely accessible. The atmosphere makes it an ideal destination for tourists seeking an escape that captures the essence of coastal Virginia.
Ir vington Commons hosts a variety of events that locals and tourists alike are attracted to, especially the monthly favorite farmers’ market. The Irvington Farmers Market, organized by Irvington Village Improvement Association, draws you in with live music being played in the gazebo, farm-to-table vendors, food trucks, handmade crafts, and children enjoying the recently upgraded playground. The market is open the first Saturday of May through November.
You can pack in a whole day in Irvington, from hitting The Local to get your caffeine fix, shopping at six unique boutiques, renting a kayak to explore Carter’s Creek, browsing artwork at Objects, and then devouring local seafood from Dredge. Irvington offers three unique lodging options plus an array of Airbnbs.
Alison Haynie, owner of Accents Flowers and Gifts says, “Choosing Irvington for Accents Flowers and Gifts was a natural decision for me. The community here exudes warmth and charm, much like the flowers we specialize in. I’m excited to be a part of Irvington and look forward to continuing to serve its wonderful people.”
Ir vington truly captures the small-town spirit with its charming walkability, annual 4th of July parade, Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot, and neighborhood camaraderie.
Withwarm locals and rich heritage, Kilmarnock is an unforgettable destination for tourists and businesses alike. Mayor Shawn Donahue says, “As mayor of Kilmarnock, I am so honored to be a part of this vibrant and thriving community that embraces our local culture and history while ensuring a solid foundation for our future.”
Kilmarnock is the largest incorporated town in the lower Northern Neck peninsula. At approximately two square miles, the town’s boundaries reach into both Lancaster and Northumberland Counties. Steptoe’s District, the downtown district, has a vintage feel, yet is easily walkable with wider sidewalks and underground utilities. Main Street Kilmarnock, proudly voted “Best Rivah Main Street” for almost a decade, offers retail therapy
in storefronts such as W.F. Booth & Son Furniture and Pearl Boutique, delicious specialty snacks like Northern Neck Popcorn Bag and Bay Bistro, and art and culture in RAL Art Center
Known as the commercial hub of the region, Kilmarnock is host to national chain stores like Wal-Mart, in addition to a thriving, small business community.
The center of Kilmarnock is crowned by Town Centre Park, a multi-use facility for the entire region. Located on nine acres at Town Centre Drive and North Main Street, Town Centre Park features a children’s playground with a water feature, the Half Shell Stage outdoor amphitheater, Scottie’s Yard dog park and more. Town Centre Park plays host to many signature Kilmarnock events including Music
on the Half Shell concert series from May to October, Fall into Kilmarnock promotions, and Christmas-related events in December, including the beloved Annual Kilmarnock Lighted Christmas Parade. (It’s a small-town tradition!)
Kilmarnock is also home to staples such as Bon Secours Rappahannock General Hospital, Lancaster Community Library, and the Northern Neck YMCA
Kilmarnock is constantly growing and evolving to meet the needs of locals and tourists alike, but the small-town charm remains strong, as it always has. Mayor Donahue beams, “Whether you are looking for a place to call home, a second home, or to open a business, Kilmarnock, it’s the Main thing!”
Reconnect with nature in Upper Lancaster and Lively, where history, adventure, and local businesses combine.
Lively is most notable for being the birthplace of Mary Ball Washington, George Washington’s mother. The village is abundant with farmlands where soybeans, wheat, and corn grow. It is home to a collection of historic houses and a 17th century church, but the real hidden gem is Belle Isle State Park. Belle Isle is 892 acres and encompasses seven miles of shoreline on the Rappahannock River. The park hosts a campground, three picnic shelters, hiking, biking and bridle trails, and motorboat and cartop launches. Rentals are available for biking, kayaking, and canoeing, and overnight lodging is available at Bel Air and the Bel Air Guest House. Park visitors have access to the universal
playground, a boardwalk and fishing pier, and educational programs or events.
Near Belle Isle, the Virginia Department of Transportation operates the Merry Point Ferry, so you can breathe in the fresh, salty air while enjoying a gorgeous view – for free.
Elite coaches Charlotte Hollings and John Dunn of Calm Waters Rowing offer a truly unforgettable sculling experience for beginners, recreational rowers, and experienced racers. Gather your group and reserve for your chance to learn from the best teachers on their private, protected mill pond.
Lively is home to ARTon Products, a second-generation family owned and operated customized drinkware company, proudly serving customers locally and across the nation. Sales Manager, Lisa Roman shares, “As
the business grows, our mission remains unchanged: to produce customized promotional products that exceed industry standards while being a good steward and employer for our community.” Nearby at Rocks to Gems and Crystals, experience gemstone mining and become a prospector as you mine for shark’s teeth, gemstones, and crystals from around the world. Don’t forget to check out their gift shop, as well.
At Shaheen, Ruth, Martin & Fonville Real Estate, we’re closely connected to our communities. We’re driven by the privilege of connecting people to lifestyles, as well as finding the right house in the right neighborhood.
Above all, we look forward to helping you settle into your new community by introducing you to the people we know and showing you our favorite places.
If you’re in search of your next home, the next exciting chapter in your life, or simply want to learn more about the area, we’re here to assist you every step of the way.
The Lancaster by the Bay Chamber of Commerce is proud to celebrate the upcoming 11th anniversary of its signature event, Taste by the Bay, on November 23, 2024
In 2013, new chamber board member Joanna Marchetti was named chair of the Wine Festival committee and tasked with exploring opportunities of a new and improved wine festival experience that would attract attendees and showcase the many attractive offerings of local businesses.
The Tides Inn proved to be the perfect location for an upscale event highlighting incredible local food, wine, and artisan wares. The intent
was not only to attract out-of-town folks to the area, but also to offer the Tides Inn an opportunity to feel more accessible to the local community. Fortunately, the Tides had a particular weekend of the year that made sense for everyone – the weekend prior to Thanksgiving. With that, a date was set and Taste by the Bay: Wine, Food, Arts and Ale was born.
Over the years, Taste by the Bay has grown in popularity, drawing visitors from across the region and
beyond. The event has become an important driver of tourism and has contributed significantly to the local economy. Visitors come from far and wide to experience the unique flavors and culture of the Chesapeake Bay region. Tickets sell out fast each year. In 2023, the event sold out in one business day – six hours to be exact. Some elements have remained the same since the event’s conception: fun live music, annual commemorative event posters
created by local artists, partnerships with business sponsors, and an elite list of artisan, food, and wine vendors. Adding to the experience, The Tides Inn has made site renovations over the years, including a new boardwalk and beach area. This year is no different, with a highly anticipated new restaurant coming in 2024.
Taste by the Bay has contributed much to the Chamber’s mission to enhance the local businesses it serves. It has made a positive impact on participating businesses and sponsors, with many reporting an increase in sales and visibility following their participation in the event.
The success of Taste by the Bay is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the Lancaster by the Bay Chamber of Commerce, their many sponsors, volunteers, and vendors. As we celebrate the 11th anniversary of this beloved event, the Chamber is proud to reflect on the impact that it has made in the community.
Tickets for this sell-out event go live THIS summer!

Nestled in Kilmarnock’s economic center, the Lancaster Community Library “LCL” stands not just as a repository of books but as a vibrant hub of community life. Simply put, LCL’s mission is to foster connections, nurture passions, and enrich lives.
LCL opened its current facility (Town Centre Drive) in 2016, and continues to support new technology and the demands of growing patronage. It is the combined efforts of these individuals that contribute to the success of the beloved library.
Thanks to a sprawling collection of nearly 50,000 items spanning books, magazines, audiobooks, and DVDs, as well as over 200,000 electronic books, magazines, videos, and audios, LCL caters to a diverse audience of all ages. TONYA CARTER
While the library is typically a quiet place, there is one area of the building where you’re sure to hear boisterous laughing, singing, and lively fun…. A key figure in the library’s narrative is Tonya Carter, the children’s department director, whose dedication spans an impressive 28 years. Almost every child in Lancaster County knows “Miss Tonya.” Described as a “small-town legend,” Miss Tonya has touched countless lives, instilling a love for reading in Lancaster County’s youth.

Located in the charming town of Irvington on a 65-acre former vineyard sits CAMP Irvington, a rustic yet upscale outdoor hospitality venue that one might not expect to find in a stoplight-free town such as this one.
Born in 2022 and created by owners Craig Dodson, Anthony Marchetti and Mike Hanky, Camp is a simple stylish 1970’s ode to open air entertainment and good oldfashioned fun. It’s a place for friends to gather while creating their own experiences with food, beverages, DIY fire pits, music, and nostalgia.
“As a father with young children, I was motivated to create a place that my kids actually wanted to go, and a
place I could socialize and not worry about the kids impeding on someone else’s good time. The openness and outdoor space at Camp allows the children to run and roam, as they should, which in turn allows the adults to relax and enjoy Camp’s offerings,” co-owner Anthony Marchetti stated. “One of the biggest rewards of the venture has been seeing toddlers and octogenarians enjoying Camp at the same time, along with every generation in between.”
Outfit ted with cozy fire pits, comfy Adirondack chairs, twinkle lights, and piped in killer tunes (when the tunes aren’t straight to you live, that is), the thoughtfully curated aesthetic lends itself to screen-free person to person contact, as well as person to nature. A small stage hosts live music acts, some traveling in from Richmond, Nashville, or closer to home.
An indoor commissary boasts an array of upscale beer and wine both packaged and on tap, gourmet
culinary offerings ranging from charcuterie board makings to hot items such as vegan chili, artisan hotdogs, mac and cheese, and soft pretzels, as well as all the fixings for s’mores. Of course. The commissary area provides a bit of “inside” seating, in the event of less-than-ideal weather.
A kids’ play area is filled with mulch, trucks, frisbees and footballs, and is bordered by a timber balance beam to offer up hours of creative play. Kids will be fueled by imagination and fresh air, not to mention the Yoohoos and ice pops from the commissary. Camp is also pup-friendly, with cold, fresh bowls of water located throughout the grounds for the furry friends.
Close proximity to Irvington’s Hope and Glory and Tides Inn makes arrangements easy for out-of-town guests who can walk, bike and golf cart around the town.
Relax, sip, and snack under the stars for a most unique experience.
Camp is not only the go-to place to catch live music and enjoy a hang with friends and family, it’s also a highly sought after event venue able to accommodate sizable corporate functions, weddings, and smaller, more intimate gatherings. The iconic meadows of the former vineyard make for a picturesque setting any time of the year, and the ample grounds are ideal for accommodating large tents and event parking.
Throughout the year, Camp hosts a series of events open to the public. They cover a wide spectrum, including concerts, educational classes, holiday celebrations, family-friendly activities, culinary pop-ups, and more. Follow on Instagram for the latest schedule of upcoming events or reach out to book your next private event at Camp.

Located in historic Irvington on the shore of Carter’s Creek, Chesapeake Academy (CA) was founded in 1889 and operated until 1907 in the old schoolhouse that is now Irvington’s Hope & Glory Inn. Nearly sixty years later, three Irvington families—Mr. and Mrs. Douglas D. Monroe Jr., Mr. and Mrs. C. Jackson Simmons, and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lee Stephens—launched a new venture to provide educational choice for children in the region.
Today, after over 58 years in operation, the instructional methods may have changed but the basic core values have not. CA’s 140 students experience an academically challenging, traditional liberal arts curriculum taught by teachers who model creativity, commitment, flexibility, teamwork, and a love of learning. The average class size is 12, with a student to teacher ratio of 9:1. New head of school Trip Cogburn knows the traditional aspects of
CA that must continue, and he possesses the excitement to bring new ideas to the table as well. Trip states that “CA will always be a place that is student-centered and that focuses on educating the whole child-academically, socially, and emotionally. We will also continue to deliver differentiated instruction which allows us to meet the needs of every learner, in small classes that allow for individual attention. And as always, this will continue to be an
incredible community of support for students and families alike. Being a truly child-centered school that puts the unique needs of each individual student ahead of everything else is unique. Some schools aren’t equipped with the resources to do this. CA is steadfast in its commitment to meeting our students where they are every day, and that’s very special. That will always be central to our ethos, and I will work hard to provide our faculty and staff the resources they need to continue and enhance our ability to deliver on this promise.”

Aninformative and user-friendly compilation of historical data from Lancaster County records, Christ Church Parish Processionings, 1711-1783, has been produced by two dedicated volunteer researchers for Historic Christ Church & Museum. Patrick Heffernan and Barbara Hensler have transformed 138 pages of original handwritten reports filed by commissioners after walking the property boundaries of every landowner in the parish into a searchable web resource.
This laborious practice, called processioning, was done every four years in compliance with a statute passed by the Virginia Assembly in 1710 in an effort to reduce lawsuits over disputed land. Of the fewer than two dozen colonial Virginia parishes whose processioning records remain, the most complete are those of Christ Church parish, spanning from 1711 to 1783 with just two sets missing. They constitute a rare record that was also rarely seen, but is now available to all on the internet.
Over a thousand different persons are named in the records. Names you may recognize from colonial days in Lancaster County are Brown, Carter, Dameron, Doggett, Edwards, Fleet, Gaskins, George, Haynie, Hill, Horn, Hudnall, Hubbard, James, Jones, Kelly, Lawson, Lee, Neal (Neale), Pittman, Pollard, Riviere (Riveer), Robertson, Sanders, Smith, Sullivan and Walker. Many of these families continue to live and work in Lancaster County. They might even live next door!
This local research work is available at www.christchurch1735. org/research.

The Morattico Baptist Church was founded in 1778 and is considered the mother of Baptist churches in the Northern Neck. The Hunton-Lunsford History Center, named for a founding member, Alexander Hunton and first pastor, Lewis Lunsford, celebrates the early account of this historic church. Born in the midst of the American Revolution, the story of Morattico Baptist Church is the story of America. We welcome you to visit The Hunton-Lunsford History Center by calling 804-577-3043.
