The year is filled with a variety of “By the Bay” events that appeal to all ages and interests. To kick off the summer we have our Golf Classic, held at The Golden Eagle Golf Course. You’ll find us each month serving beer and wine for the music events at the Kilmarnock Town Centre Park. Stop by and explore a local business at our monthly After Hours networking events. In October, Kandy for Kids offers a safe and friendly environment for Halloween fun on Main Street in Kilmarnock. Our signature event, Taste by the Bay hosted by the beautiful Tides Inn in Irvington includes tastings from Virginia wineries and Virginia craft breweries, sampling of culinary delights from local restaurants, live music and of course plenty of shopping, just in time for the holidays. We round out the year with the Kilmarnock Lighted Christmas Parade, the oldest lighted Christmas parade in the state of Virginia. Susan Pittman BUSINESS PERSON OF 2019

usan Pittman is a born and raised resident of Lancaster County, a devoted family person, and is noticeably dedicated and passionate in her efforts towards building a stronger community. Once Pittman graduated from Lancaster High School, she went on to receive her Bachelor’s in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting at the College of William and Mary. Shortly thereafter, Susan gained experience as a certified public accountant in the Business Assurance Services division at Price,Waterhouse Coopers, LLP & KPMG in Hampton Roads. Afterwards, Pittman moved to Charlottesville to study and graduate from the Virginia Bankers Association School of Bank Management at the University of Virginia. In 2002, Pittman moved back home to the Northern Neck, where she began her career at the Bank of Lancaster, (now known as Virginia Commonwealth Bank). She began as a credit analyst within the Commercial Lending Department, and over the years, moved on to become the department’s Executive Vice President and Northern Neck Market Leader; making her responsible for not only her home branch in Kilmarnock, but all other Virginia Commonwealth Bank branches in the Northern Neck, as well.

Susan’s passion for building a strong community began at a young age. While growing up, Pittman worked alongside her father, Fred Swaffin, III in his furniture store. Through that, she saw the importance of supporting small businesses in our area. Susan’s father and grandfather, (Fred Swaffin, Jr. and Fred Swaffin, III), both served as Kilmarnock Chamber presidents and were frequently involved in various Chamber events and activities. Susan’s passion for lending a hand and building-up those around her undeniably manifests itself through her active involvement in volunteer opportunities whenever they arise. Over the years, Pittman has served as the Treasurer of the Lancaster County Virginia Education Foundational Board, she has chaired the River Counties Community Foundation Board, then later stepped-up to serve on their grants committee. Pittman has been a member of the Town of Kilmarnock’s Economic Development Committee, she’s a graduate of LEAD Northern Neck, a member of the Northern Neck Kiwanis Satellite Club, and she can often be found at Dreamfields being the one to ensure the teams keep score, or even helping-out behind the concessions counter. Amongst everything else, Pittman was also named and served as Lancaster Chamber’s very first female president. Despite all of Pittman’s outstanding educational achievements, career accomplishments, and her various and wonderful accounts of her selfless dedication to bettering her community, Susan states that if she had to pick her most important title, “it’s being Eli’s mom!” Susan, her husband Travis, and their son Eli reside in Kilmarnock. Susan Pittman was recognized for her accomplishments and presented with the 2019 Business Person of the Year award in front of community members on January 18th at the Lancaster by the Bay Chamber’s Annual Membership Meeting and Dinner held at Indian Creek Yacht and Country Club. The chamber extends their gratitude and appreciation for Susan and all that she has done, and continues to do, for the vitality and development of the community in which we live.

Afterward, Susan went on to become a Nurse Educator within the Pediatric Endocrine Department at VCUHS in Richmond, Virginia in July of 2001, where she remained until January of 2008, where she then stepped up to become VCUHS’s Coordinator of the Pediatric Diabetes Education Program. In-between her time at VCUHS, she also commuted and worked at the Pediatric Diabetes Clinic in Urbanna two to three times a month until 2015. Throughout her many years within the nursing field, Susan has also worked at the Joslin Diabetes Foundation in Boston, Massachusetts as a Coordinator within the Youth Clinic, a Coordinator of Teaching Nurses, and a Diabetes Teaching Nurse. Susan and her husband Rick manage their family-owned and operated custom home building business, together. Turney & Turney was originally founded in Richmond, Virginia in 1989, but has since settled in Northumberland county. Since their business began, Turney & Turney has held true to their mission statement in maintaining a reputation of quality and integrity. Throughout the years, their business’ work has been featured in Parade of Homes by the Bay where their company was presented with the Judge’s Award. After visiting and commuting for several years, Susan and her family fell in love with the mellow pace of the Northern Neck and eventually

usan Turney’s passion and commitment to caring for and bettering her community shines through in her years dedicated to nursing and volunteered time. Starting at the New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, where she received her Diploma in Nursing, she moved on to earn her Bachelor of Science at Suffolk University, and then eventually, her Masters of Education in Health Education at Boston University. In the following years of her education, Turney devoted her earned knowledge to years within the nursing field. Her various hardworking accomplishments included initiating, establishing, and coordinating the Utilization Review and Case Management department at the Psychiatric Institute of Richmond, starting in December of 1990. Later on in March of 1992, she worked as the Coordinator of the Utilization Review and Admissions department at St. John’s Hospital in Richmond, Virginia. In March of 1993, Susan moved on to work as the Diabetes Clinical Education Coordinator at Johnston-Willis Hospital in Richmond, Virginia. Between February of 1994 and July of 2001, Turney worked as a Certified Diabetes Educator at both the Children’s Hospital and the Pediatric Endocrine Associates in Richmond,

moved to the area in 2009. Turney & Turney became a member of the Chamber of Commerce in 2010, and in 2015, Susan went on to volunteer her time as the Chamber board’s secretary and has been there ever since. Susan and her family absolutely love the outdoors. The Turney’s spend most of their free time out on the bay in their boat or tending to their garden. Susan has been taking English-style horseback riding for several years with her instructor Paige Nuckols at Claiborne’s Farm in Merrypoint. Susan and her husband Rick have three sons and four grandchildren that reside in Richmond. When they’re visiting together, Susan has lovingly self-titled herself as, “the chief cook, bottle washer, and babysitter of the grandchildren.” The Board presented Susan Turney with her award at the Chamber’s Annual Meeting and Dinner on Saturday, January 18th at Indian Creek Yacht & Country Club for her dedicated time and efforts to serving her community and hard work within the Chamber. Kilmarnock’s residents also make history books. Some have risen to success in larger arenas like Dr. James Norris, one of Virginia’s civil rights pioneers known for his work as a doctor battling discrimination in rural Jim Crow Virginia. There are many more stories like his that capture the essence of the town and its people. The water, he says, is another great success story of Kilmarnock.

has welcomed an unprecedented wave of changes and challenges for everyone. Local businesses here have swiftly adjusted to an ever changing set of responses and needs prompted by a global pandemic. These moments and stories of both loss and triumph will make it into history books near and far. Kilmarnock’s records will be no exception, says Director of the Kilmarnock Museum Carroll Lee Ashburn. From catastrophic fires, to a progressive waterman industry, the commercial center of the Northern Neck has seen quite a bit of change since its earliest history-book mention in 1778. “The Kilmarnock way is slow, but the community is strong,” says Ashburn. Ashburn, who was born and raised in the area, is friends with many of the town’s restaurant, boutique, hotel, and other storefront owners. As a local, he’s lived and thrived through many changes alongside them.

A Phoenix from the Ashes “For starters, there’s the fire of 1952,” he says. “It started on St. Patrick’s Day when the Hazel Building caught fire and high winds swept it up through Main Street.” The town was singed by major fires during 1909 and1915, as well. What Ashburn noted after his personal experience in 1952 was the “amazing comeback after the fire took away half of the town… Many businesses were up and running by October.”

Over the years, Ashburn says, the town has grown and bridges have introduced new ideas and people to the area. All the while, Kilmarnock has kept its entrepreneurial spirit and small-town personality. Small businesses shine here. Northern Neck Burger, The Rivah Gift Shop, and Burke’s Fine Jewelers are a few more examples of the area’s success stories, he says. Many of them are walkable in the town’s Main Street Steptoe district established in 2006. The food and spirits here travel much farther back in history, though. Though Kilmarnock was officially established in 1930, the town was named by Scottish merchants in the 1770s. The name comes from Kilmarnock, Scotland, which is considered a sister-city to this day. You can get a taste of Scotland at the Kilmarnock Brewhaus and other restaurants in town.

Come in, the Water is Fine “The water makes living here affordable,” Ashburn says. “You can literally live on the water and all its resources.” Coupled with other innovations and investments, “you can have all the amenities you need here.” “The only thing there isn’t a lot of is nightlife.” he says. But sometimes a back porch will do for that. “People who come to visit or buy second homes tend to fall in love,” he says. “They realize they have it all. I tell people when they visit the museum that they’ve found paradise.” As the Town of Kilmarnock inches closer to its centennial, it’s more evident than ever that it will remain a rare and special getaway for the region and the only place its locals ever want to call home. “I wouldn’t live anywhere else,” Ashburn says. “You found paradise is what I tell everyone I meet at the museum.” The Town of Kilmarnock will plan for a celebration on December 8, 2020. Northern Neck Insurance 125 Years Later If you owned a home in the late 1800s, you lived in mortal fear of fire. Without firetrucks or running water, a stray spark or lightning strike could destroy your home and bankrupt your family. In 1896, the people of Irvington recognized that the devastating risk of fire did not have to be borne alone. A group of 37 homeowners banded together to form the Northern Neck Mutual Fire Association of Virginia. By pooling their resources and making a promise to each other, these local folks gained the ability to rebuild a home leveled by fire and founded the company that would become Northern Neck Insurance. In the century that followed, membership in the Northern Neck Mutual Fire Association expanded statewide, providing coverage for thousands of homes throughout the commonwealth. In 1987, we became Northern Neck Insurance Company to reflect an expanded list of insurance services. As our membership grew, so did our need for more working space and personnel as the company grew into one of the largest employers in the area. As Northern Neck Insurance approaches our 125th anniversary, we are grateful that more than 70,000 Virginians trust us to protect and preserve their financial futures. An Art League of Their Own: RAL Celebrates 70 Years Today, the Rappahannock Art League Center is a creative home for about 350 locals and the walls of its gallery feature the work of 55 artists. A team of volunteers welcome guests to the gallery every day and keep the operations of the nonprofit moving forward. “It’s such a valuable asset to the community,” Hope Towner says. “Arts organizations in general lend culture and creativity to communities and in a small place like the Northern Neck that’s especially powerful.” Towner is a Managing Director of the Rappahannock Art League, based in Kilmarnock. She moved to the area in 2006 and answered an ad in the paper for an office manager. Towner says she was excited to help and use her master’s degree in nonprofit arts management. After more than a decade, she’s witnessed so much change and success. The nonprofit not only celebrated 70 years of service to the community in 2019, but also 20 years in its main street building. After moving into the building, the gallery there recently received a significant upgrade. “We tore down dry wall, installed new lighting, removed so much old stuff,” Towner recalls. “Now, it’s one of the most beautiful galleries in Virginia.” More updates are the way, says Towner. Towner says she’s also especially proud of the First Fridays initiative, which welcomes all the town’s businesses to stay open for the night along with RAL. “Our featured artists come and it’s a unique opportunity to talk directly to www.lancasterva.com

home after her “second home” became her only home. “We came because of the water,” she says. “It was quiet and beautiful.” She stayed because of the community she created here. “They all amaze me all the time,” Harvell says. “I’m so glad I started to volunteer with AWL.”

them,” she says. “I can’t wait to get back to it once we can all gather together again,” she says. The monthly events are accompanied by an awards presentation for different categories. RAL is also well known for its annual Art Heist event, which helps raise funds for the organization’s annual fund and ongoing projects. Guests pay for a ticket to attend and based on an assigned number, they are able to choose a piece of their choice to take home. “It’s always so fun and exciting to see the community’s passion for locally made art,” Towner said. Animal Welfare League of the Northern Neck

There’s always a hum of activity at the Animal Welfare League’s thrift shop in downtown Kilmarnock. Bordered with the pattern of paw prints and the faces of pets, the shop is a visible reminder of the nonprofit’s 55 years of service in the area. Its shelves, floors and YEARS racks are stocked ANIMAL WELFARE LEAGUE

with clothing, home decor, furniture and antiques. Judy Harvell remembers her first time volunteering there. “We operated on a shoestring,” she says. “I came on as a volunteer clerk back then.” Today, Harvell is the Board of Directors President and Thrift Store Manager. The shop is in a new location where they have increased fundraising by 60 times compared to 12 years ago, according to Harvell. As funding grows, the need for AWL’s services stays consistent. The organization receives little public funding and therefore relies on the store to meet its goals. “We have about 70 volunteers who help us with all we do,” she says. “We don’t do anything alone.” That includes spaying and neutering more than 1,500 animals a year, working to encourage fostering and adoption of animals in need, offering various veterinary services, and distributing food to families who need help feeding their pets. “One of the greatest parts about our communities here is that they help give back to local charities and causes so much,” says Director of the Kilmarnock Museum Carroll Lee Ashburn. AWL is a great example. The agency serves the counties of Richmond, Northumberland, Westmoreland, and Lancaster. Beyond the thrift store, the AWL is known for its annual Dog Gone Dog show event, which brings dozens of local business and dog owners together for a community dog show. In addition, AWL is supported by its “terrific” membership base, grants, and bequests, says Harvell. Havell herself began calling the area

Karen Stanley remembers her first acting workshop with the Lancaster Players. “I had terrible stage fright,” she says. “I memorized a two-minute monologue. I remember lights coming on to perform it at the end of the workshop. By the time I was done, I realized I loved the feeling of being on stage.” Stanley was hooked and began volunteering in 1981. Then, the group had 19 members and focused largely on children’s plays and programming. Over the past 50 years, the organization has evolved and grown in many ways. Before finding a home in 1983 at the former White Stone firehouse, Lancaster Players showcased its various productions and educational programming in a variety of places including public schools, community buildings and even the Tides Inn. “The community has supported us every step of the way,” says Stanley. That includes individual donors, the Rappahannock Foundation for the Arts, Virginia Commonwealth Bank, and Booth Furniture who has provided furniture and other supplies for productions. There are many more businesses and people who support the organization’s efforts to bring live theater to the Northern Neck. The volunteers, though, are the lifeblood of the Lancaster Players. It takes nearly 100 people to put on a show. That includes direction, stage lights, box office management, phone answering, website maintenance, dinner servers, cooks, actors, and a stage manager. “We have had significant talent that lives in and around Lancaster County who have gifted their talent and experience to the Lancaster Players,” Stanley says.

One of those volunteers is Luke Rawls. “My career has been in the equipment side of the entertainment industry,” he says. “My skill set is very much in sound system design, electrical work, lighting design. When I moved here, I called the Players and asked if they needed help.” The answer was an enthusiastic, “yes!” The first production he helped with was called “Suds,” a 60s musical that took place in a laundry mat. Since Rawls began volunteering, the Lancaster Players has significantly upgraded its sound system, lighting system, and more. The playhouse is always full. Luke says the appetite for theater can be attributed to the fact that people who relocate to the area are from cities like New York and Washington, D.C. Each year, the Lancaster Players produce three to four major productions that will each run around eight times over a period of three weekends. “We volunteer because we love the theater,” says Stanley. “We want this county to have experience of live theater. 45 Years of Fashion at The Dandelion

“People are put together in a more casual way these days,” says Jeannie Ward-Smith. “Fashion can be a little intimidating for some women. It used to be black and white about what to wear for different occasions, but the same rules don’t apply anymore.” The Dandelion co-owner says that’s why her staff spends a lot of time with her customers. They create outfits with jewelry, handbags, and shoes from the Irvington boutique’s collection. “Sometimes we’ll have three people with one customer,” Ward-Smith says. This personal attention and support is one of many things that have set The Dandelion apart. Inside of a parsonage built during the Steamboat Era, walls, cabinets and even stairwells feel like a catalogue come to life. Jackets, pants, shoes, bags, jewelry,

hair accessories and more are selected and bought from markets in Atlanta, New York and beyond. You’ll find brands like Barbour, Toms, Charleston Shoe Company, Adrianna Pappell, and Eileen Fisher. “It wasn’t always women’s clothing,” says co-owner Sheila Broderick Brown. The store was originally a children’s clothing store and gift shop. WardSmith began working there 40 years ago. She had previously worked in retail in Annapolis and began to guide the store to serve women. Brown and Ward-Smith met when both had children who attended Chesapeake Academy together. “I began helping Jeannie at the store and soon enough we were co-owners,” she says. The store’s collection appeals to visitors and residents alike. From the Tides Inn to long-time locals, “we draw from Baltimore, Richmond, DC, and more.” Ages range from 20 to 80, but the styles and brands are always current. “We love making women feel good about themselves,” Ward-Smith says. “In this crazy world, we take time with them, give them the service they want and sometimes really need.” Twenty years later and the two women are not only celebrating an anniversary, but they are starting to sell clothing online. “Today is a big day,” Ward-Smith said during an interview on April 9. “It’s our last day being physically open during COVID-19 for now, but we

arranged this moment with the launch of our online shop.” Within minutes, the store received messages and customers were eager to learn more. Before launching this functionality online, Facebook and Instagram had become a strong focus for The Dandelion. “Our personal service is what people are drawn to, so we try to emulate that online,” Brown says. “Running the brick and mortar business on a dayto-day basis is a challenge and this is something new and different for us. We’re ready to move forward, though.” Brown and Ward-Smith have evolved and added other services to The Dandelion as the years have passed. That includes closet consultations. “We try to help them make sense of everything, introduce trends, and how to put it all together,” Brown says. “We love to help all women,” WardSmith says. “Having been in business for 45 years, some younger women shop here because they used to shop with their grandmothers. We have served multiple generations here.”

One Generation to the Next: Wells Fargo Advisors celebrate 40 Years in Kilmarnock When Graham “Jack” Neal Jr. opened his investment firm in Kilmarnock in 1980, it was called “Wheat Securities.” Six or seven name changes later and now known as Wells Fargo Advisors, the mission of the business is still the same. “I call myself a dream reaper,” Neal says. “I help everyone live comfortably now and in the future.” “We get to know people, down to their dogs and cats,” he says. “We know their families and have helped some client’s children’s children prepare for the future.” Neal says he and his team still conduct 85-90% of their business faceto-face in the Kilmarnock office. It’s not something you’ll find in many other localities, he says. “What’s most rewarding is when you see that third generation come along and they are ready for success because the first generation was successful www.lancasterva.com

through the work you did with them.” Welby Saunders was one of those third generation families served by Neal and his advisors. “When people come here to work, they stay here,” Saunders says. “My family is from here. When the opportunity rose to come back to this area and raise my family here, it was an opportunity we couldn’t pass up.” He and Neal both give credit to the community for the longevity of their business. Together, he says, everyone works together to keep the quality of life high in the area and they all share a commitment to local living. “It takes a certain kind of person to come here and make a home,” Neal says. “There’s not a Nordstrom, they support local merchants, start their own businesses to help residents, they volunteer, they contribute to the greater good.” Neal himself gives back. His own charitable work includes managing the George and Cornelia Verlander Foundation. Through the foundation, there are more than 146 kids in college. He meets with them to mentor them along the way. Later this year, Neal and Saunders say they will work to “show the town our appreciation through a community-wide celebration.”

“Before it opened 2017, we had a robust wellness program. We just didn’t have a home for it.” Before the new 18,000-squarefoot center opened, fitness and other activities took place in small classrooms, hallways, and a small workout room. “We had a lot of enthusiasm and great trainers; it just needed its own home,” he says. Today, the new state-of-the-art facility includes an aquatics area, exercise classrooms, fitness equipment, locker rooms and community spaces. People from the surrounding community are also welcome to use when space allows. “It’s always bustling,” Bunting says. Building a Home RWC first opened in 1985 through a grassroots effort by local businesses and community leaders who wanted to provide amenities, services, and a continuum of care for residents of the Northern Neck so they could continue

to live in the area during the latter years of life. This year, RWC is celebrating its 35th anniversary. Bunting, born and raised in Matthews, began working at RWC in 2004 as a chief financial officer. During his tenure, RWC has built a new dining room, remodeled its kitchen, and added free standing homes to the community’s portfolio. The next project on the way: A “small house” dedicated for residents who are dealing with memory issues and cognitive impairment. It will have space for eight to ten residents. “It looks more like another house, so the transition isn’t so hard and it’s a safe and supportive space,” Bunting says. The Circle of Support “I’ve been looking out my window while we’ve been on my phone and I’ve seen half a dozen residents walking by with dogs and enjoying the outdoors,” he noted. “It’s not a dramatic change from where they just lived before this.” That says a lot about RWC and what makes it different. The quality of life of the surrounding community is infused in everyday life there. Many men and women who find a home at RWC were already retired in the area. “Us being here gives them an opportunity to help them stay in the area where they planned their retirement plan,” Bunting says. RWC residents can still attend their churches, civic organizations, volunteer work, bridge with friends, and more. Not only do residents visit the outside community, but many of the area’s local businesses bring their services and products right to RWC.

25 Years of Hair at Heads Up Hairworks When you walk through the front door of Heads Up Hair Works on Main Street in Kilmarnock, you may see a 13-day-old baby or a 100-year old woman settling in for a haircut. “Every day is different,” says owner Georgie Fary. In 2020, she’s celebrating 25 years of business. “I never expected I’d be celebrating a milestone like this,” she says. “When I first opened, I figured that as a worst case scenario, I’d lose the money I invested. I took it one day at a time.” Today, her salon is a hub for community gatherings and a home for her staff. “We’re like family here.” Fary credits Heads Up’s success to the supportive community of the Lancaster area. Her dedicated staff are the lifeblood of the salon. There may be as many as 10 hair stylists, nail techs, and aestheticians working at a time. Together, they provide a suite of salon services from hair, to waxing, to nails. They offer the latest services and products. Education is a vital part of the salon’s brand and business model. “We invest in a lot of education,” she says. “You have to keep learning. My staff deserves that and our clients do, too.”

Fary and the staff have attended trainings and classes in New York, California, Nevada, and more. Heads Up also has its own apprentice program so aspiring stylists from the area can learn from staff experts and take advantage of the salon’s resources. “I’ve been doing hair for decades, if there’s one thing that’s always the same is that it’s always changing,” she says. “To keep saying we’re the best, we have to stay creative and curious so we can be truthful to our community.” Fary grew up in the area. She worked at the Tides Inn, in the real estate industry and more. It wasn’t until she was 34 that she pursued her interest in hair and attended cosmetology school. “I was committed to the area,” she says, “I have a home here, friends here, and I truly love the region. I wouldn’t ever want to leave.” Fary says because she’s a local business, she always works to support local businesses like hers. It’s not difficult, she says, because everything is within walking distance: “Super markets, clothing boutiques, banks, jewelry stores.” “A lot of people don’t realize how much we have here,” she says. “You can even have a night out at the theater. I’m a big fan of the Lancaster Players.” “No matter where you go, though, someone will always wave and ask you how you are today and they mean it,” Fary says. “If you’re in trouble, your neighbors there.”

Drones to Disaster: ERUdyne’s International Headquarters in White Stone

Suzanne Novak first visited the area during a getaway with her mom. “We rented a house in Weems,” she says. The president and owner of ERUdyne had been operating her business from Connecticut. “From a business standpoint, I can work from anywhere. We are largely virtual and dispatch teams wherever they are needed. I was looking for somewhere I could go that was on the water, but where I could get to DC easily. After that trip, I packed up and came to Kilmarnock.” Novak and her team of veterans provide a variety of services including

crisis management, strategic planning, drone services, and a recently launched drone school. “Our different business areas compliment each other,” she says. “Our biggest challenge is getting word out that we can help, especially during times like these. During a pandemic, for example, Novak’s team can help businesses think through business strategies, walk them through difficult decisions like layoffs, discover new revenue opportunities, and transition to a virtual environment. “It’s the difference between a bluesky day and a black-sky day,” she says. “When your business is faced with challenges, we can take the emotion out of it, help people think more clearly, introduce new perspectives and be an extension of their staff. On a blue-sky day, we help them with training and planning for the future.” For example, during Hurricane Maria, ERUdyne sent a rapid response team to Puerto Rico to help a company understand what was happening on the ground there. They managed a crisis response and informed the business’s critical decisions. The ERUdyne team also leveraged its drone services to demonstrate to the company how its building and other assets were being repaired and cleaned up. “This was definitely one of the times I was grateful we hired veterans,” she says. “They are insightful and creative in ways I cannot be.” In fact, everyone on staff is a veteran with the exception of Novak. herself has a background in business operations, technology and marketing. The company was originally founded in 2000. As ERUdyne celebrates 20 years, they are also celebrating a new arm of the business: Drone School. So far, ERUdyne has trained more than 50 people, helping each person obtain a commercial license. The four-day courses are often taught at the Dream Fields Baseball Park on Irvington Road. “In some cases, they can become a contractor for us or they can start their own business,” Novak says. Novak looks forward to the next 20 years in Lancaster. She’s an active community member, serving with the Boys and Girls Club and the Northern Neck YMCA. “I understand everything is connected and this is how I give back,” she says.

A.D. DESIGN

All Lines Lead to the River: 20 Years with A.D. design

Ann DeMuth first launched her design business in Vermont. Her work has stretched across the globe, though. Hong Kong, Mexico, the Phillippines, Mexico City, and New York City are just a few places her global client base hails from. “With access to internet, I’ve enjoyed being able to be anywhere and work for clients far and wide,” DeMuth says. Sometimes that freedom meant living on a sailboat for DeMuth. “I remember having to sail through rough seas in the Bahamas in search of meager internet,” she says. 22

DeMuth’s skillset is rich and detailed. She has degrees from the College of William and Mary and Studio Art Centers International in Florence, Italy. Along with graphic design and web site design, her creative energies often flow to fine woodworking, stained glass, as well as wooden boatbuilding and renovation. DeMuth also takes to the camera to give back. DeMuth launched a branch of A.D. design, called Rescue Dog Photography. She provides no-cost photography, and low to no-cost graphic design and website design services to nonprofit rescue organizations, helping dogs find long-term homes. “I love the creativity and variety in design work,” she says. DeMuth’s business has been on a journey full of stories and adventures. After launching her business in Vermont, it’s been based in a little fishing village in North Carolina, St. Augustine, Florida, and now, the Northern Neck, Wicomico Church. It’s never dull. “Every project is so different, so there’s always a bit of a learning curve, which makes it interesting,” she says. That includes researching HIPPA compliance for a health practitioner website or fine-tuning a site for a realty firm, so that any changes or additions to their MLS listings automatically show up on their site. It’s a good thing she’s a constant student and swift learner. Her craft continues to change with new technologies and businesses on the rise constantly. “One thing that has drastically changed during the last 20 years is website design,” she says. “One thing that hasn’t changed is the ability to be creative, the reward of seeing a project take shape and the excitement of clients as their business or organization evolves, and how much I enjoy doing design work.” Locally, you can see her work Northern Neck Partners for Pets (northernneckpartnersforpets.org) and Linda Goldstein a local watercolor artist (lindagoldsteinart.com). Discovery Map Turns 10

Discovery Maps are colorful, handdrawn maps of tourist destinations, cities, and towns that can be found in throughout the U.S. and Canada. Mike Antonio (Mike Antonio Graphics), has owned the “Chesapeake Bay Region” map since 2010. “I’ve always seen these maps when we vacationed in the Outer Banks or up in New England,” Mike says. “I always saved them and thought they’d be a great fit down in our area.” The maps are distributed for free but supported by the businesses that pay to advertise on the map. Each advertiser gets a display ad that appears around the border, and their building highlighted and labeled so visitors know exactly where to find them. The map business also complimented Mike’s regular line of work – graphic design. By producing the ads himself he’s able to streamline the process and save in production costs. Also, building relationships with local business owners has led to additional work in marketing and advertising. Maps are updated once a year, usually in May, in time for the summer tourist season. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the slowdown in business, Discovery Map won’t be updated in 2020. The current (20192020) edition will still be on streets though through December and can be found in most high-traffic shops and restaurants. Local Restaurants Celebrate Milestones + Evolve

“A

Kilmarnock family tradition,” says one Lancaster local. “Have been eating here all my life,” says another. “If you leave without the coconut pie you really missed your treat for the day,” is another piece of advice you’ll frequently hear before your first visit to Lee’s Restaurant in Kilmarnock. The family owned and operated restaurant is celebrating 80 years of business this year. The restaurant is a gathering spot for families, coworkers, and neighbors. Classic southern and seafood dishes line menu. The walls and booths are reminders of the eatery’s past, which begins in 1940. Some things are predictable here like the friendly faces and the well loved coconut pies. Others are unexpected like the Colossal Burger, which features a 10-ounce Certified Hertford Beef patty, a pile of pork barbecue, five

ounces of beef brisket, and four ounces of shaved steak, a fried egg, two pieces of bacon, lettuce, tomato, and three onion rings. These are all loaded and stacked between two potato buns.

Beyond the Booth

Guests this spring haven’t been able to dine on delicacies like this inside of the restaurant walls, though. The pandemic that has swept the globe has impacted businesses here in Lancaster. Lee’s is one of many restaurants that have adapted and evolved to keep serving the region’s residents and visitors. “When we got the 10-person limit, we closed and started doing takeout and delivery, two weeks,” said Dredge owner Bryan Byrd. “It definitely keeps evolving.” Long past the restrictions of the pandemic have lifted, we will continue to see these expanded curbside pick-up and delivery options available. More

patrons will be bringing their creative, river inspired eats for at-home al fresco dining in Lancaster. As Dredge celebrated it’s one year anniversary, Byrd said he had just purchased a computer system to help with handheld ordering on the patio of the restaurant and online ordering for pick up. That functionality will be ready to go when dining restrictions lift. “We expect guests at the Tides Inn and Hope & Glory will love being able to enjoy their meal wherever they want,” he says. In the meantime, Bryd says the community has helped him and his staff stay positive and motivated. “There’s a lot of negative because of this, but also a lot of positive,” he says. “The community has really showed its support during this time by deliberately dining out and supporting restaurants as they navigate this big change.” www.lancasterva.com

n the first Saturday morning of each month, you can find tents and tables lined up at Irvington Commons. Locals and visitors are chatting and shopping vendors from across the region who are there to showcase and sell freshly grown and made produce, meats, breads, cheese, flowers and more. There are more and more moments like this in Lancaster. A growing number of farmers markets, stores, and stands are creating new ways to share the freshness of the area. It’s changing the way people think about the region. There’s much more than fresh seafood here. Some of these businesses include Old Farm Truck, Miss Mary Seafood, Kellum Farm’s Produce and Seafood, and Dug In Farms, who just celebrated five years of business. “As a business located on a working farm, we offer a very unique experience,” says owner Carolyn Quinn. “Not only do we sell healthy, real food, which can be difficult to find locally, but we also share the experiences of growing and farming with our community.”

Growing Something New

Carolyn Quinn’s idea for her business sprouted when she noticed that there was a need in the area from locals looking for fresher versions of the goods that they already used on a daily basis. Quinn got to work on her already existing garden. She expanded it and its production rate. Soon, she was able to start offering a straight-from-the-farm approach to produce. Quinn says she was careful to grow her business slowly and ensure it was sustainable just like her farming practices. What once began as a simple picnic table, two coolers, and an honor box at the end of Carolyn’s driveway, has now evolved into more than 1,100 square feet of retail space. Here, underneath of a pole barn, locals and travellers can find Dug In Farms’ fresh and locally-sourced products yearround. There’s always something new and interesting available, too. Quinn and her team share their own recipes and pickle flavors. They also explore a newly-offered product line every year including all-natural skin and body products, hormone-free and antibiotic-

free dairy products, baked goods, and grass-fed beef, lamb, and pork. In 2020, Quinn says the business will begin to offer various gift options and a nursery. “My most fond memories are when the farm is humming at full speed,” says Quinn. “There will be a band of teenagers harvesting flowers in the field and two women making bouquets in the market. Customers are snatching up the flower bouquets as soon as the buckets arrive. There’s a great sense of pride for everyone on the farm knowing that they contributed to that experience.” Quinn wants to share that feeling with everyone. Dug In Farms is an opportunity to educate local consumers, as well. The Dug In Farms team hosts talks and various demonstrations about nutrition, cooking, gardening, and the environment. “Throughout the past five years, Dug In Farms has held true to their mission in providing customers with the fullness of a farm experience through eating, exploring, and educating those in their community,” Quinn says. Volunteers also help spread this message and bring this vision to life. “Our volunteers are our community ambassadors and the business could not be where it is today without their support,” she says. From its early stages as a picnic table-based business, Quinn also credits her first customers. “I hope that the community knows that we wouldn’t be in business if it weren’t for their support, encouragement, and deep commitment to the farm,” she says. “There are so many people who drove out of their way to stop by a simple picnic table loaded with eggs and produce because they believed in fresh food and the farmer who grew it.” To enjoy all the freshness of Dug In Farms, you can find them 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 155 Fleets Bay Road in White Stone, with the exception of Wednesdays. Families living in the River Road area of upper Lancaster County can sign up to have their child ride the Club bus home in the evening. These members can be dropped off at one of four predetermined locations in the northern end of the county. The BGCNN bus leaves the Club site at approximately 6:00 PM. At each of the drop-off locations – Beulah Baptist Church, Queen Esther Baptist Church, Hartswell Baptist Church, and the intersection of Morrattico Road and River Road near the Moose Lodge – parents or guardians may pick their children up at a scheduled time. Round trip transportation for this area is also offered during the Summer Program, with morning pickup beginning at approximately 7:50 AM and evening drop-offs finishing at approximately 5:20 PM. OPEN HOURS: The Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Neck after school program is available Monday-Friday, from after school until 7 PM daily. Extended hours, as well as weekend programming, are also offered for teens.

Northumberland County Schools generously bus BGCNN members to the newly opened Northumberland site, located at First Baptist Church. The Boys & Girls Club of Northumberland began serving all youth in the summer of 2019,

Camp Irvington is the perfect place for campers to explore new activities, discover new interests, and meet new friends. This full-day program for children ages 4 to 6 nurtures campers’ curiosity and offers a wide variety of activities on and off campus – weekly trips, arts and crafts, silly competitions, games, and more! The G.E.C. and Camp S.W.A.G. meet for about a week in the summer to offer participants instruction in life skills, exposure to career opportunities, information about technology, and opportunities for service. The camps also include an overnight road trip to a different destination each year, with college tours and stops at places of historic and cultural interest included.

that all water activities are lifeguarded by certified staff. With a counselor to camper ratio of 1:5, they always have their eyes on your child. Camp Kekoka staff can’t wait to spend quality time exploring nature, teaching archery, water sports, and leading family time! They spare no cost to make sure their staff exceeds your every expectation. LOGISTICS: The Dining hall has state of the art cooking facilities. The wonderful cooking staff prepares healthy meals that campers are guaranteed to eat. One parent commented, “I’m amazed you got my child to eat eggs, he never eats them at home!” Another common comment is “This is not camp food!” Campers also get the opportunity to pick vegetables and fruit from the camp garden to be used for their fresh salad bar at lunch and dinner. Campers feel right at home in their climate-controlled cabins. Each cabin has two toilets and two sinks. Each cabin sleeps 10 campers and two well-trained staff. Beds are bunk bed style with space below for campers to store their stuff. The climate-controlled bath house is a short walk from the cabins. Named for Dr. Richard Baylor, the founder and devoted physician of the Northern Neck Free Health Clinic, this park includes a nearly half mile long nature trail that follows an old road around the boundaries of Norris Pond. The trail is part of the Virginias birding and wildlife trails, you can view waterfowl, native plants and enjoy the outdoors along this quiet stretch of ground. The nature trail features environmental education opportunities for the public to enjoy. Located at 770 N. Main St, off Rt. 3 (Main St.) between Old Fair Grounds Way and Good Luck Road. The entrance is only accessible from northbound Rt. 3, on the right just before the bottom of the hill. Parking is available on site. There are several ground rules to ensure a safe and enjoyable visit to Baylor Park. 1. NO pets 2. NO fires 3. NO boat launching 4. NO littering 5. NO overnight camping The pond itself is private property and not a part of the park.

Persons using the nature trail and parking area are responsible for their own safety and do so at their own risk. Terrain involves steep slopes and areas of rough, uneven ground. Appropriate clothing and footwear is recommended.

Belle Isle State Park 1632 Belle Isle Road, Lancaster 804-462-5030 www.dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/belleisle#genera_information Belle Isle has seven miles of shoreline on the Northern Neck’s Rappahannock River and provides access to Mulberry and Deep creeks. The park lets visitors explore a wide variety of tidal wetlands interspersed with farmland and upland forests. It has a campground, three picnic shelters, hiking, biking and bridle trails, and motor boat and car-top launches. Belle Isle also offers overnight lodging at Bel Air and the Bel Air Guest House. Bicycle, canoe and kayak rentals are available. Guests also enjoy the park’s universal access playground, boardwalk and fishing pier, and educational programs. The Bel Air historic area is ideal for weddings. The diverse habitats found in the park provide homes to many predator birds, such as blue herons, osprey, hawks and bald eagles. White-tailed deer, turkeys, groundhogs, rabbits, squirrels, moles, reptiles and amphibians are also common. There are eight distinct types of wetlands within the park. These diverse ecosystems make Belle Isle an excellent outdoor laboratory for environmental education.

Hickory Hollow Natural Area Preserve Regina Road, Lancaster 804-786-7951 www.dcr.virginia.gov/natural-heritage/ natural-area-preserves/hickory The Hickory Hollow Nature Trail offers 3.5 miles of footpaths that meander through 250 acres of mixed pine-hardwood forest, ravines and Cabin Swamp that form an important habitat for migratory songbirds, wild turkey and rare plants. This site, protected from development by the Northern Neck Audubon Chapter, is home to many interesting breeding birds including Acadian flycatcher, hooded, and black-and-white warblers. The park is also home to over 500 plant species, including beautiful wildflowers. Careful lookers can be treated to rare orchids and emerging mushrooms after a heavy, late summer rain. There are abundant springs and seeps in the ravine areas that harbor a variety of species, including the rare Tidewater amphipod, a small crustacean. Colored markers mark the nature trails. Please remember: Hickory Hollow is a Natural Area Preserve and as such, contains sensitive natural communities. Respect

this area by staying on designated paths, leaving pets in the car or at home, and not removing anything from the area.

Hughlett Point Natural Area Preserve is open to the public. Facilities include parking, trails, a woodland boardwalk, wildlife viewing platforms, and interpretive signs. Hughlett Point and Dameron Marsh natural area preserves contain some of the most significant Chesapeake Bay wetlands for marsh birds, and also support pristine sandy shorelines that provide habitat for the federally threatened northeastern beach tiger beetle and nesting sites for rare shore birds. To protect these species and their significant habitats, designated sections of preserve shorelines may be closed during specific periods of the year to both land (walking) and water (boat landing) access. Thank you for your help in conserving some of Virginia’s rarest wildlife by observing the posted seasonal closings of designated shorelines at these two Northern Neck preserves.

Designed for the 12 years old and under set, it features swings, slides, climbing equipment, a teeter totter and a GIANT blue crab created in bronze. This project was organized and led by community mothers who wanted an area where children could safely play. Other area organizations have joined in adding to the amenities of the playground.
