Shawn Donahue

COPING

with COVID-19 by Bob Casazza

Every business is essential and contributes to the quality of life throughout the area. While not every business has survived the pandemic-driven economic downturn, there is a great deal of optimism in the community and much of that is a result of the drive and resiliency of business owners. The owners of Kilmarnock Inn, Chesapeake Doughnut Company, Dandelion, and BodyFit each took different approaches when coping with COVID-19 but their experiences share a deep-seated commitment to community.

everyone’s spirits,” said Shawn. “People are ready to get back to normal and there are better days ahead!” Something good can happen even during the worst of times. Gabe del Rio and Jeff Ewing were busy opening their Chesapeake Doughnut Company in White Stone when COVID-19 began. “Things were pretty scary,” said Gabe. “We had just signed our store lease, the business loans were approved, and everything was a go. To be safe, we delayed things and moved our grand opening to June. We started selling from a doughnut cart in our parking lot and gradually opened inside,” he explained.

W

hen COVID hit, business at the Kilmarnock Inn dropped 60% and is just now coming back. In the beginning, owner Shawn Donahue cut his payroll staff of 20 down to just 4 people. “We survived the worst of the pandemic, because the local community was always there for me,” said Shawn. “Friends, neighbors, and other businesses kept sending customer referrals for our restaurant and rooms … That really kept us going,” explained Shawn. “We also had an on-going group of ER doctors from Bon Secours Rappahannock General Hospital staying with us. They came from out-of-state to help with the patient needs at the hospital.” Shawn’s creative thinking has always served him well. In February, he put together a special Valentine’s Weekend package with a choice of rooms, dinner, and breakfast for just $199. It sold out within days and most of his guests being local couples. “I’m also thinking of doing a special ‘Christmas in July’ theme at the Inn,” smiled Shawn. “I’ll decorate the place with lights, Santa, and a big Christmas tree! We should also bring back our Christmas parade too. That will lift

Gabe del Rio (left) and Jeff Ewing

Gabe grew up near Irvington and graduated from Lancaster High School. After 20 years in California and a rewarding career in financial development, he and his partner Jeff found their way back to the area. Both bring a unique set of professional skills and personal commitment to our community. “I’ve always wanted to return to the Northern Neck. There’s a lifestyle and beauty here I truly appreciate,” Gabe said. “Who doesn’t want to live in a place where there’s more trees than people?”

Gabe and Jeff recognized there were no doughnut shops in the area and saw this void as their opportunity. “We set out to make the most delicious doughnuts in the world with lots of variety and quality ingredients,” said Gabe. “We brought White Stone’s old building back to life to welcome travelers entering the Northern Neck. We’re very proud of paying our staff a living wage,” Gabe explained. “Being a decent job creator is important to us and how that benefits people living our local community.” Just after the opening of their White Stone location, the town of Warsaw reached out to Gabe and Jeff. “The Mayor and town manager offered capital and other incentives we couldn’t refuse,” says Gabe. “They even talked us into creating a breakfast sandwich and it’s now one of our most popular items.” With the two locations now in place, Chesapeake Doughnut Company is sitting at both major entryways to the Northern Neck. The company is looking at expanding to Gloucester, demonstrating that even in a pandemic a business can grow. In Irvington, Dandelion owners Sheila Brown and Jean Smith tackled COVID-19 with daily steps to help their company survive. They created a strategic list with tactics to serve customers in ways they never tried before. Once they were allowed Sheila Brown (left) and to open, they scheduled Jean Smith appointments and adjusted store hours to accommodate customer visits. They went above and beyond sanitizing their location while following social distancing guidelines. “We developed an online shopping platform with special sales and promotions each month,” says Jean. “This also included curbside pickup, concierge services, and virtual shopping via Facetime postings,” Sheila explained. “Our marketing efforts were a good mix of social media — Facebook, Instagram — and traditional local advertising.” Sheila and Jean’s tactics included reworking their budget going forward while taking into consideration buying products to satisfy the working from home/staying at home/ casual lifestyle of their customers. They also partnered with vendors to monitor deliveries, payment schedules, and cancellations. “Surviving our first year of COVID has been challenging to say the least,” says Sheila. “We continue to face its reality each and every day as we reload, point, and shoot. We also realized that our success in staying open so far has been based on a collaborative effort,” Jean explains. “We could not have done it without our dedicated employees and those loyal customers who continued to purchase from us during these difficult times.” Many of us in the area consider the BodyFit gym in White Stone an essential part of life. With special classes and a wide selection of work-out options, this is a favorite place to take care of both mind and body. Owner Ramona Darden has

The biggest value about our area is the sense of strong community. There’s truly no other place I’d rather live. I’m just happy to be here, in this very special place. R A M O N A DA R DE N

created a first-class facility but faced her own COVID crisis. “My business was closed due to a mandate by the governor for almost two months and I lost over 30% in revenue,” Ramona said. “While closed, I created videos on Facebook to keep people active. When we were allowed to reopen, I turned my gym into an outdoor facility with classes in the backyard parking lot,” she explained. To keep her doors open, Ramona put in 84 hours a week, personally cleaning the entire gym, conducting classes, and making sure COVID protocols were followed according to state guidelines. “The most difficult part was not knowing when or if I’d be able to reopen my business,” said Ramona. “There were calls every day with some cancelling their membership but I tried to stay positive and keep the faith.” Ramona did get financial help from Virginia Commonwealth Bank with a PPP and Small Business Association loans. Many of her clients continued to pay for their membership even though they weren’t going at the time. Now that people are getting vaccines, she hopes more will use the gym again and things will return to normal. “I feel very embraced and blessed by the people here,” Ramona said. “The biggest value about our area is the sense of strong community. There’s truly no other place I’d rather live. I’m just happy to be here, in this very special place!” Grit played a central role in the ability of these four businesses to successfully make it through the COVID-19 pandemic. They, like other businesses on the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula, have shown that a combination of tenacity, connections, and a supportive community can make a demonstrable and positive difference. COVID-19 taught us something about ourselves and our community. When we care for each other – we are stronger together. There are better days ahead. www.lancasterva.com

Women By the Water: Local Business Owners by Megan Wilson

Lee Taylor, owner of Sewlovelee

The waters and roads of Lancaster call to a diverse array of families, entrepreneurs, adventure seekers, art lovers, foodies, and more. All in one day, you can break a sweat, pick up a whole new wardrobe, learn how to sail, and learn about the latest wellness trends. Many of these experiences are possible because of the area’s women-owned businesses. Each one offers a unique twist as they showcase the best of the region’s character, resources, and humans. We talked with some of our leading local ladies about their businesses. They shared their plans for the years ahead and reflected on a challenging year behind them. Magic in the Making: Sewlovelee Fuels Creators Near and Far There’s magic in the fibers of quilts, says Lee Taylor. “The stories that can be created by cutting it up, combining different fabrics with a pattern are amazing,” explains Taylor, owner of Sewlovelee in Irvington. “Quilters take bits and pieces of fabric, sometimes with a plan and sometimes without, and they magically put the pieces together in a new way. Individuals use their creative juices to transform fabrics into a new and different thing.” Since she opened the shop in 2014, she’s also seen the magic bring people 12

together in the Lancaster community. Taylor first opened the destination quilting and crafting shop in White Stone. In 2018, she moved the store to Irvington, which has a large back yard where the store can host quilt shows and other events right on the main street of Irvington. “I love Lancaster County,” says Taylor. “Everything I want and need is here: inspiration everywhere, a pace I adore, and the best customers!” Her customers are embarking on their own quilt-making and fashion design projects. At Sewlovelee, they can buy fabric, batting, patterns, needles and thread. She also carries ready-made

Visitors & Business Guide to Lancaster County

items, such as quilts, tote bags, and decorative items. During the past year, she says her loyal customers are making even more. “I’ve been totally surprised at how many customers have doubled down on quilting,” she says. “True, they can’t travel or get together, but they have really been making a lot. We’ve sold a lot of fabric, more than I thought.” Taylor also said some of her older customers have been teaching their grandchildren to quilt via video chat apps. It’s indicative of the generational knowledge that keeps the quilting craft alive. Taylor says she and the Sewlovelee team are “truly interested

in helping.” They make sure to stay flexible and ready to work with customers in a variety of ways. “We are all about constantly learning, sharing, and creating the space for people at all skill levels to be comfortable,” she says. “Customers are free to engage us in any way that helps them. For some, that means helping select fabrics. For others, it means trying a new type of pattern…” Taylor is full of gratitude from the support of her customers who chose to support small businesses like hers. In order to give back herself, Taylor and her team joined together for the Beyond Ourselves Quilts for Kids project. Taylor donated longarm quilting for 10 quilters to make quilts for one or more local organizations this November. Participants received a free bag of scraps to get started. Sewlovelee’s 7th anniversary celebration will be held October 12-16, 2021. The event will feature an outdoor customer quilt show and live music. Last year, Taylor displayed 42 original quilts created by Sewlovelee customers, which she says she’ll work to do again this year. Visit Sewlovelee at 4504 Irvington Road Irvington, VA 22480 or online at www.sewlovelee.com. Grow with Me Melissa Burke’s great grandmother always had her in the garden, planting flowers, and anywhere else her hands could touch the soil. “She taught me about living off the land,” says Burke, owner of Grow NNK in Kilmarnock. Her love for plants and family is woven into every aspect of her “house of zen” on Main Street. She sells a variety of CBD products created with hemp grown by her brother and cousins in Beaverdam, where she grew up. “I wanted to offer something positive for everybody,” she says. The Grow NNK plant bar welcomes children and adults alike to creation their own terrarium or zen garden. Guests start by choosing an orb or glass vase, then an air plant or waterbased algae ball. They can customize the terrarium with healing crystals, figurines, and more. The big kids can

Melissa Burke, owner of Grow NNK

enjoy wine or beer while they create, too. “It’s like art therapy,” she says. “You get to be creative, choose how you want to decorate the vase.” Along the way, Burke educates guests about plant care and more. When it comes to CBD, Burke also educates her customers thoroughly. The top three reasons people seek out CBD products are for pain relief (often related to arthritis), as a sleep aid, and stress reduction. “Some people are first time users, some people have tried it and are looking for a really good quality product,” she says. “CBD is a natural anti-inflammatory and can relieve muscle and joint pain naturally. A lot of people struggle with sleep problems so the CBD really helps. Stress and anxiety relief are probably the most popular problems CBD is used to help.” Her offering of salves is especially helpful for pain relief, she says. Her collection of salves and tinctures will soon grow. She’s ready to welcome an expanding line of CBD products that will include serums, lotions, cleansers and more. Some will be infused with CBD and others will not. Her store is located On South Main Street, so she

Arabella Denvir

Wind and Ropes: Arabella’s Journey to Lancaster When you first meet Arabella Denvir, you’ll notice her calm demeanor. Like the waters that surround the region, she has a way of quieting the mind and focusing your attention. She welcomes locals and travelers on board her more than 20 sailboats. They’re hoping to learn something from the sailing veteran and the instructors she’s taught. “I grew up sailing and cruising on big boats,” explains the Ireland native. “In college, I sailed all four years for Trinity College in Dublin and after that, I always raced.” Sailing is in her blood. Her great grandfather designed boats and every generation since sailed the seas around England and Ireland. She fell in love with a sailor, too. She and her husband Philip moved to Malta in the Mediterranean Sea and opened The Malta Sailing School and the Malta Young Sailors Club. After Greece decided against joining the European Union, they looked for another region to call home and a community where they could introduce their passion to new people. Her friends and contacts led them to Lancaster in 1998. “It’s a really fabulous community,” she says. “People are just nice to each other 14

and they are very welcoming. I really mean everybody — the people who have lived here for multi generations and the people who have just moved here. It’s a cooperative, friendly, and encouraging environment. Everybody encourages everybody.” Her husband Philip passed away in 2011. Denvir continues the legacy they began here together and her passion for sailing stays strong. Premier Sailing school is located at The Tides Inn, which features safe beaches and coves on one side for small boat sailing and the wide-open waters of the Rappahannock River on the other for larger boats. Devnir and her team of instructors offer high quality personalized instruction for children, adults, and families, and even corporate groups. “There’s a lot of communication and teamwork that goes on when you’re sailing,” she says. “We keep it fun and relaxed, though.” During your instruction, Denvir and her instructors will show you not only how to move the jib and the main sails, but to look at the color of the water to anticipate a gust of wind. She says she selects her instructors as much for their personality as for their qualifications. Premier Sailing students

often go on to become instructors and to race themselves. Others pick up and maintain the hobby or even apply it to a career in the Navy, she says. Fashion with a Mission: The Women Behind the Kilmarnock Fashion Hub A nephrologist and a psychotherapist walk into a boutique … They decide to start one of their own. That’s not the full story, but it’s a good start for When Ordinary Won’t Do boutique managing partners and fashionistas Diana Jamison and Vicki Kinsel. The duo first stepped into the fashion world at Pearl Boutique in Kilmarnock. “We rented a little piece of the store as we began buying clothing and learning the business,” says managing partner Kinsel. When the pandemic took hold in 2020, Jamison says it was good timing as they had already begun talking about creating their own space. While they looked for the right home for their fashion concept, they began developing an online store, learning photography and graphic design, and diving into

everything else that a modern business needs to be successful. “It was frustrating at first, but we learned it all now and love it,” says Kinsel. The name “When Ordinary Won’t Do” says a lot about what customers can expect to find at this Kilmarnock shop. “We won’t buy something unless we really like it and it has to be a little different,” Kinsel says. Beyond curating a collection of fashion finds unique to the area, they actively seek out and carry brands that support sustainable production practices, are fair trade, and are run by women and minorities. “We are opposed to fast fashion,” explains Jamison. “We actively look for products made of recycled materials, cotton, and plant-based fibers... We want to leave a light footprint and help others do the same.” This approach to fashion is progressive and insightful. Kinsel and Jamison are part of a growing movement around the world. The global ethical fashion market grew nearly 9% between 2015 and 2019 and is expected to grow another 7% by 2023, according to The Business Research Company. “There is a movement in the country and the world to develop fabrics that can be used again and to develop dyes that are not toxic to the environment or not toxic to the people,” says Jamison. Originally in White Stone, the new Kilmarnock location opened February 2021. Features of the new space include a protective plexiglass at the counter and they are adding new hours and days to the schedule every week to

accommodate the growing demand and foot traffic in the area. Visit When Ordinary Won’t Do at 12 South Main Street, Kilmarnock and whenordinarywontdo.com. BodyFit - White Stone Lifelong fitness professional Ramona Darden prefers the warmer temperatures of Virginia over her home state of Maine. “I love being on the water — we go out every weekend if we aren’t playing golf,” says Darden. She first left Maine for college at San Diego State University. She earned a Bachelor of Applied Arts & Sciences with an emphasis in Athletic Training. Her career led to work in roles as athletic trainer, physical therapist, wellness director, exercise physiologist, and beyond. In 2004, Darden moved to Williamsburg to connect with family. Here, she started to work for BodyFit, whose 24/7 fitness concept continued to grow a following. She made the business hers in 2009 and brought the concept to White Stone. Today, the newest location is 7,600 square feet and features a wide variety of classes and equipment. She’s been able to keep her doors open and help the Lancaster community stay healthy during the global pandemic. “We’re so glad that we were able to open our big garage doors for outdoor fitness classes when the pandemic came along,” Darden says. “We’re happy when we’re helping people be healthy.” Bootcamps, strength and yoga for seniors, paddleboard fitness, spin classes, fusion Pilates and yoga, high

intensity circuit classes, dance, and more line the diverse list of options on the BodyFit group class schedule. Class sizes stay small so instructors can offer personal attention to participants and help them focus on their form, she says. BodyFit’s instructors are highly qualified and certified like Darden with professional dancers offering classes such as TransZendance, a fusion of world dance, Vinyasa Yoga, breath work, and Energy balancing. Darden says she plans to add barre to the group class schedule this year, as well. Beyond its yoga and training rooms, BodyFit’s expansive building also features a 3,500 indoor walking track, locker rooms, and an infrared sauna, which speeds healing, helps with pain, and improves cardiovascular health. She plans to add a spa area with an esthetician and even outdoor pickleball courts. BodyFit has several membership levels including part-time rates for members with second homes or drop-in and weekly rates for visitors. To access the 24/7 resources, guests receive a key fob, which is monitored by cameras and tracking codes.

Ramona Darden

She loves bringing the community together through BodyFit, too. She’s excited to get back to working on community events like her annual fun run along Beach Road during Oktoberfest around Halloween. “I’ve been embraced by this little community and it feels great,” she says. “I want to keep showing everyone how much we care.” Visit BodyFit at 578 Chesapeake Drive, White Stone, VA 22578 or www.bodyfitva.com. www.lancasterva.com

The Tides are Changing Carter’s Creek Resort Upgrades to Support Local Ecology The Tides Inn holds a special place in the memories of locals and visitors alike. Imagined and opened in 1947 by E.A Stephens and his wife Ann (fondly remembered as Big Steve and Miss Ann), the original vision for the waterfront resort was to create “the finest thing that could be developed and still keep the rural atmosphere.” Today, the resort stays true to its commitment to the rural lands and ecosystems on which it sits. This year, the Tides Inn is debuting upgrades and additions that deepen its relationship with the land and waters of the region. 18

“I

t is important to us that we are responsible stewards of the land and Carter’s Creek,” says owner Tracy Tang Limpe. “The shoreline project is one of several investments we are making toward this goal.” Limpe is referencing a $3.6 million project that is already underway. A wooden boardwalk is taking shape that will allow guests to walk from one side of the property to the other over water. This will become part of an 18,000 square-foot “living shoreline.” “We have worked closely with Gluckman Tang and Bay Design Group to create an integrated estuarine shoreline ecosystem using infrastructure, such as the pedestrian wharf, to not only frame and contain the reconstructed land and plants, but also to provide a continuous and accessible observation platform for engagement by all visitors to the Tides Inn,” says Eugene Ryang, Principal at Waterstreet Studio. Waterstreet Studio is the landscape architecture firm that will help bring the vision to life. The initial objective of the expansion project was to stabilize the land and protect the riverfront property from erosion. After exploring a variety of stabilization options, sisters and owners

Tracy Tang Limpe and Dana Tang realized there was an opportunity to do much more. In addition to the boardwalk, new shoreline additions include 150 linear feet of oyster reef, 42 new trees, 21,500 plants, and the preservation of approximately 30 old-growth trees. These will reinforce natural habitats for birds and aquatic life who call the local rivers and creeks home. “The Tides Inn is actually a partner with Mother Nature in this project, as the living shoreline will improve water quality and increase the diversity of plant and wildlife species,” said Will Smiley, the resort’s resident ecologist. Smiley served 17 years as a teacher at nearby Christchurch School and holds a Master of Education in Sustainability. He’ll create interactive and educational waterfront experiences for guests and visitors. Some of the new educational programs will include a class called “Beautiful Swimmers.” Participants will learn how to bait a crab pot and catch Chesapeake Bay Blue Crabs. Other programming will have participants casting nets, exploring the lifestyle of the oyster, and more.

“My goal is for each and every guest to be enriched by our waterfront preservation and related programming and leave inspired to become environmental stewards in their own communities,” says Smiley. Other local experts like Anne Self, Lower Rappahannock River Steward with Friends of the Rappahannock, will support and deepen these environmental efforts, too. “This project builds on our Clean Carter’s Creek program, which works with local partners to restore oyster reefs, shorelines and upland landscapes,” Self says. “The Tides’ living shoreline will be a showpiece for conservation and clean water and will go a long way towards meeting regional water quality goals, for a healthy and scenic Rappahannock River and Chesapeake Bay.” You can learn more about the shoreline restoration project at the Tides Inn at TidesInn.com/sustainability.

Stuart Bunting and residents, Barbara and Hugh Lovell .

A Village Within a Village Business Man of the Year, Stuart Bunting, Leads RWC into New Era T

he COVID-19 pandemic has brought about challenges and changes for many businesses as it has for our community as a whole. The retirement housing industry is perhaps one of the most altered as a result of the circumstances made by the international crisis’s wake. “In early March 2020, we had to reinvent most of our operation,” says Stuart Bunting, CEO of Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury and Lancaster Chamber of Commerce’s Business Person of the Year. “There wasn’t a part of our operation that was not touched or changed,” he continues. “We didn’t have to lay anybody off, we were able to take care of all of our residents, and we are able to partner with so many other businesses in our community.” To make it happen, says Bunting, the staff had to learn new tools and sift through an ever-growing amount of complex information daily. Many job descriptions changed. New requirements and needs compelled many to step outside of their comfort zones. “They are the people of the year, I’m just the frontman,” he says. “I get to take the credit, but the credit goes to the people here on our leadership team, our 22

managers, our folks who are out doing the care and support day in and day out. They have done a phenomenal job.” Changes at RWC during the past year included creating systems to stream regular fitness classes, developing safe meal delivery protocols, establishing weekly COVID testing clinics, and even creating a new package delivery system. RWC became its own “small Amazon facility” says Bunting. “All in all, our residents and our staff have been incredibly flexible, understanding, and maintained a strong sense of love, care, and concern for the residents we take care of here,” he says. “All the while they still had to go home and take care of their own families.” As a leader, Bunting says communication was the greatest lesson of the pandemic, giving a new meaning to teamwork for many. He worked to empower staff members to solve problems and make decisions he may have normally made. During these unpredictable circumstances, the staff was already working to complete the building of the community’s new “small house,” which is a homelike environment designed for people with mild to moderate cognitive impairments such as dementia. A new

Visitors & Business Guide to Lancaster County

garden plot also took shape so residents could get outdoors and garden. During his 22 years at RWC, Bunting has overseen the building and expansion of several projects including the 18,000-square foot Life Enrichment Center in 2017, freestanding homes, a dining hall, and more. With every project, Bunting says he’s deliberate about working with local companies and professionals to bring these visions to life. “We’re fortunate to have the resources, local businesses, vendors, banks, and more around us,” he says. “They’ve been our support system. They’ve stuck with us and helped with every aspect of our work the past year and years before.” March 24 was the first Wednesday in 2021 RWC did not hold a COVIDtesting clinic since most of its residents and staff have been vaccinated. Signs of “normal” activities including family visitations are returning, though many things may stay changed forever, he says. “It’s good to see families come back in, see residents moving about a little more,” he says. “We’re taking baby steps back in and every step back in brings another ray of sunshine.”

Kenny Kuykendall (Middle Bay Realty), Andrea Banks, and daughter, Allison Hart.

Volunteer of the Year, Andrea Banks, Builds Relationships and Hope G eneration after generation of families have made their homes, built their businesses, and raised families in Lancaster County. This leads to strong, genuine, and supportive connections among neighbors here. These relationships have become something Andrea Banks aspires to be a part of and to champion. “I grew up in a military family and I never had roots,” she says. “I get to witness and admire how deep the roots are here and I get to be a part of strengthening those relationships.” You wouldn’t know it—Banks has only lived here for six years. During that time, she has grown to know just about every friendly face and family name. As area manager for Primis Bank, Banks spends her days making connections with local businesses and families around the Middle Peninsula. She also served as Vice President and President of the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce. Making enriching connections is more than work for her, it’s a passion. “I love bringing people together through events, initiatives, and other

unique opportunities,” she says. Taste By The Bay at the Tides Inn, Kandy for Kids in Kilmarnock, and numerous Kilmarnock Town Centre Park events all have a bit of Banks behind them. From securing sponsorships to recruiting volunteers, Banks makes everyone feel excited and welcome. Her favorite volunteer opportunity is serving beverages at the park’s concerts and events. “We want to do everything we can to elevate the park, get people to use it, and eventually get people comfortable enough to transition to more public gatherings after COVID-19,” she says. The pandemic has prevented her from volunteering in person, but Banks has been a vital resource to small businesses and the community. During every round of the Small Business Association’s Paycheck Protection Program, Banks helped local businesses apply to receive the often lifesaving funds. “My goal was to get every single business signed up so we could all emerge together stronger than before,” she says.

Even before the pandemic, Banks says the most satisfying part of her job is lending. During the lending process, Banks makes sure to educate borrowers with a variety of information that she feels can change a person’s life. “We talk about how to improve and maintain good credit,” she says. “I also help them reimagine their debt and teach them how to save more money in the process. It’s so rewarding.” The teacher in her finds other ways to empower community members. Freshly graduated high school students often don’t know how to write a check or know what’s in their bank account. On the other end of the age spectrum, many adults find themselves feeling out of practice when their spouse dies who handled most of the finances. “I make sure they know I’m here to build a long-term relationship and they aren’t alone,” she says. “I’m straightforward with my answers about where to invest, how to manage their money, and more… I love watching the evolution of someone who is really in a tough spot grow to take ownership and even pride of their finances.” As we emerge from the pandemic, Banks has helped connect locals to vaccination opportunities and more. “I want to be a voice that says it’s okay, let’s get back to living and supporting each other like we do best,” she says. www.lancasterva.com

Community Helps Boys & Girls Club Rise from the Ashes Stronger Than Ever E

arly one morning in November 2018, an electrical spark just below Phillip Mumford’s office started a chain reaction that transformed this community gathering place forever. Many people weren’t even at work yet as the fire swiftly swept through the main clubhouse of the Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Neck. Fortunately, no children had made it to the club yet, either. “Within two days, the community pulled together to figure out the next steps with us,” says Executive Director Mumford. The school system made spaces available for after-school programming, local businesses like Chesapeake Bank helped raise funds, and Northern Neck Computer Consultants set up laptops and a new phone systems for staff members. “I had a laptop in my hand by 5 p.m. the day of the fire,” Mumford says. “Beyond that, we were able to save 10

26

years of data despite the damage to our server.” By the following Monday, programs were open and operating, though in different locations. “We knew kids would need a safe place to be during that critical 3-7 p.m. time frame, which is the riskiest time for teens and youth if they don’t have something creative and energetic to do,” Mumford says. At the time, a capital campaign for building renovations and an expansion was already underway. “The vision was to create a building that really allowed us to serve the way we wanted,” says Tina Hagen, former Development Director and current Publications Coordinator. “We planned to connect the clubhouse to the back barn and elevate the space that had been designated for the teens.” The vision remained after the fire settled and programs stabilized. The leadership team decided with the

Visitors & Business Guide to Lancaster County

help of architect Randall Kipp that moving forward was the best decision. With $2.6 million raised by the end of 2019, the Boys & Girls Club began demolition and looked ahead to a hopeful future. As the rebuild began, the COVID-19 pandemic made its way to the region. Shutdown alerts spread and a new challenge confronted the organization. “We started to realize as we talked to other clubs around the country, that this wasn’t going away very fast,” Mumford says. “We took a hard look at our mission and asked how do we do the basics when we can’t see the children in our building? Nutrition became our focus.”

Northern Neck Insurance presents a check to the Boys & Girls Club in October 2020.

Hagan says it was a massive undertaking that came with help from the community. Volunteers and local businesses helped compile healthy meals into bags that could be delivered and distributed at various pick-up points in the area. Between March and August of 2020, the club and its volunteers distributed approximately 31,000 meals and snacks. In addition, “Club on The Go” bags contained enriching and creative activities for children and families with help from agencies like the Lancaster Community Library, the Gardening Club of the Northern Neck, and more.

Other community groups like Dream Fields “became crucial” says Mumford. Here, the Boys & Girls Club was able to offer academic support for virtual schooling and host other unique and safe programs like a drone camp. By November 2020, the administrative team was moving into its new home, two years after the fire. More programs are welcoming children on site and as COVID restrictions lift, more students will be able to visit the center in larger numbers. Local YMCA’s will help extend the reach of the Boys & Girls Club mission this summer through a swim program and more. More than

anything, Marketing and Development Director Jill Sears says, the club wants to see its halls and doorways filled with community members. “We really want to welcome the community here as much as we can,” Sears says. “We want our facility to be a home hub where organizations can meet, families can host birthday parties, and more. We have a beautiful space and we want our community to be able to use it because they helped us build it.” Sears says the Boys & Girls Club plans to offer tours of the new facility this summer and hopes for a big grand opening event as soon as they are able. www.lancasterva.com

n mid-March 2020, the world as we knew it came to a halt. The COVID-19 pandemic was front page news, and across the Commonwealth, cities and counties were enforcing lockdowns, schools were closing, businesses were shuttered, and life was turned upside down. One week prior, the River Counties Community Foundation(RCCF) saw the coming need and quickly responded by establishing the River Counties COVID-19 Response Fund to support the immediate needs and long term economic recovery efforts in Lancaster, Middlesex, and Northumberland counties, recovery efforts which are still going, more than one year since the start of the pandemic. “It was hard to predict the full impact COVID-19 would have in our region and beyond,” said foundation director Margaret Nost. “That is why the River Counties COVID-19 Response Fund was designed to address both urgent and immediate needs, as well as the long term effects once our community began to recover.” The fund comprised a coalition of philanthropic, business and community members joining to ensure that resources were available to help local nonprofit and government organizations meeting the critical needs of the most vulnerable residents on the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula. RCCF combined funds from its annual

fundraising campaign Together. Stronger. with additional unrestricted funding from the foundation’s Community Impact grant cycle with gifts from private foundations and community donors to support the Response Fund. “We anticipated the needs would be many, and while RCCF was positioned well to respond with grant funding, we knew it would take the entire community coming together to provide the resources necessary to face the challenge head on,” said Carolyn Norton Schmalenberger, RCCF Advisory Board Chair. Focusing on the most critical needs of Children and Families, Emergency Services, Food Security, Health Care,

and Housing, RCCF distributed over $1.1 million to 66 nonprofits and other agencies working to serve area residents. “We could not have done this work without the generosity of our donors, past and present,” said grants officer Lincoln Boykin. “The philanthropic legacies of our donors who have passed on will forever be associated with the COVID-19 Response Fund. And even in the most uncertain times, our current donors stepped in and contributed to the Response Fund, as well, ensuring key organizations were supported as they worked to provide food, shelter, health care, childcare and hope to our friends and neighbors in greatest need.”

RCCF provided funding to support the Boys and Girls Club and YMCA’s virtual education support programs, which are ongoing while area schools are in a hybrid learning format. www.lancasterva.com

Following C MPASS

Heading in a Positive Direction I

f there has been one grand, shining example of perseverance and cando attitude in Lancaster County throughout the entire COVID-19 debacle, you wouldn’t have to look much farther than the flashing lights and smiling-yet-masked faces inside COMPASS Entertainment Complex. Located smack-dab between Irvington and Kilmarnock on Irvington Road (100 Entertainment Dr., Irvington, VA — to be precise), COMPASS Entertainment Complex is a 28,000 square-foot, stateof-the-art family entertainment complex, which features COMPASS Cinema Six — the Northern Neck’s only multiscreen luxury boutique movie theatre — as well as an arcade, indoor adventure course, climbing walls, electric go-karts, miniature golf, and many other exciting attractions. COMPASS also includes a full-service restaurant, Meridian Bar & Grill. And on September 4, 2020, COMPASS officially opened its doors to the public — in the middle of a global pandemic. Obviously, opening an experiential entertainment venue, whose success is dependent primarily on lots of inperson guests, during the middle of a global health crisis wasn’t part of the original business plan. However, owners Julien Patterson and Terri Wesselman were driven by two important factors: 1. pandemics are temporary; and 2. commitments are commitments.

A year prior to the grand opening, on a very hot morning in September 2019, when owners Patterson and Wesselman dug their golden shovels into the ground just west of the Hills Quarters Community during the official groundbreaking ceremony, the sweat on their brows wasn’t just from the late summer sun. It was from the three years of research, travel, design, and community partnerships they had already invested into the project. “We didn’t come up with the idea for COMPASS on a whim,” Patterson said. “In the three years leading up to the groundbreaking, we started with an idea, we developed a proof of concept, we went to the national trade shows, and we looked at equipment. After that, we really honed in on what our vision would be for the Northern Neck.” Their vision: To create a unique setting for family members of every age level to come and enjoy the perfect combination of entertainment in a safe, secure manner, while providing jobs and economic opportunities to the area that will help this community for years to come. As the vision came to fruition, everything seemed to be on track for the original plan to open in late spring of 2020. Then COVID happened in March. With persistence — and a lot of prayer — as their guide, Patterson and Wesselman pivoted their plans to focus on a late-summer opening, which would

comply with Phase 3 of Governor Ralph Northam’s reopening plan and ensure they could honor their staffing commitments. “By the time we were breaking ground, we were already hiring and making commitments before anyone had ever heard of COVID. If we had not elevated our plans to persevere, it would have put a lot of people in a bad situation, and that was unacceptable to us and this community,” Patterson said. Now, with summer just around the corner and COVID-19 vaccines in fullscale distribution, COMPASS has been open for nine months — following and vigilantly updating sanitation and capacity protocols the entire time — and the owners say their determination to follow through with the plan was worth it. “It’s getting better every day,” said Wesselman. “I think we’ve turned the corner as far as business volume is concerned. This year’s spring break was a great week for COMPASS and we are seeing more and more guests as people are becoming more comfortable about getting out and about. Plus, people are figuring out that they don’t have to drive two hours to go to the movies or have a fun evening out anymore.” --COMPASS Entertainment Complex is located at 100 Entertainment Drive, Irvington, VA 22480.
