MESTRE, ITALY
topographic strategies for rainwater management
The city of Mestre is located in the hinterland of Venice, Italy. Similar to the whole bay, the area of study is suffering with a phreatic level at around 1 meter depth and strong flooding during occasion of heavy rain. There is a high risk of flooding for the partly illegal built houses, also because of the hight sealing of soils in the small streets. The task of the project was to develop an working water management system that not only protects of future floods but also gives a certain transformation of quality to the quarter. Working intensively with specific species again, it was very interesting to see how this special, humid but partly very dry area could transform to something dens with an natural and calm character and way of working.
