K AHC FOREWORD

Kenya is ready for the world Welcome to the latest edition of the KAHC Kenya Hotel & Restaurant Guide. We are experiencing an unprecedented buoyancy in the country’s hotel sector right now, with huge investment, both domestic and international, creating the hotels and connecting infrastructure of a truly world-class tourist destination. The Kenya Association of Hotelkeepers & Caterers and the country’s hotel sector as a whole have changed beyond recognition since the first guide was published in 2004. The arrival of internationally recognised brands keen to increase their footprint in Africa, with the centrally located Kenya an ideal location, has shaken up the sector. The skyline of Nairobi is now filled with landmark luxury hotels offering an internationally recognised assurance of quality to attract leisure and business visitors from all over the world. There are plenty more spectacular examples being built or at the planning stage, such as the 45-floor Hilton Garden Inn in the capital’s Upper Hill area, which will be part of the 70-floor Pinnacle Tower, set to be the tallest in Africa. So the positive trend only looks set to continue. Traditionally, Kenya’s coast has not shared much of the capital’s investment and expansion, but that looks to be changing. Kenya’s tourism minister has identified the region’s potential; and recent improvements to the coastal airports and connecting roads are a boost. New hotels are also cropping up in towns and cities outside the capital, such as Nakuru and Kisumu, which have great attractions of their own and are convenient bases to explore unforgettable sights such as Nakuru National Park and Lake Victoria. The wealth of choice in our hotels, lodges, camps and restaurants is showcased in this guide. Membership is a sign of quality and here you’ll find first-class accommodation, fine cuisine, attentive service and knowledgeable guides in our game parks. Whether you are a conference delegate, a business visitor, set for a safari adventure or want to dive in our crystal-clear ocean, within these pages are sure to be the perfect places to host your adventure. KENYA TOURISM BOARD FOREWORD

Creating an ideal landscape for tourism success Building on the successes of the past two years, 2018 has recorded a growth in Kenya’s tourism industry, with the increases in visitor number year-on-year. The US market is our leading visitor source with a projected growth of 15% at the close of the year given the launch of Nairobi- New York KQ’s direct flight. Kenya is also seeing the benefit of increased air connectivity in Africa after adopting the AU Single African Air Transport Market to open its skies and create a landscape for even greater tourism numbers in the future. Further, with the government’s directive on visa-on-arrival directive for African nationals, we expect more arrivals into the country. Such optimism in the tourism industry is reflected in the growth of the hotel sector. A total of 13 new hotels are expected to open their doors in the country by 2021. These developments are attracting international brands to Kenya, with blue chip players Sheraton, Ramada, Hilton, Best Western, Radisson, Marriott and Mövenpick increasing their footprint in Africa with flagship hotels in Kenya. Most of these hotels are coming to Nairobi, but the recent opening of the new cruise ship facility in Mombasa and major improvements to the coastal road network are tapping into the huge tourism potential for the beautiful beaches along the Kenyan coast. As tourism numbers grow, more visitors are looking beyond Kenya’s world-famous wildlife safaris and beaches for unusual experiences off the beaten track. Cultural and sports tourism is growing in popularity and investment in Kenya’s more remote towns and cities is on the increase to cater for new visitors. Kenya’s heart-stirring wildlife parks and blissful beaches are still world leaders. At this year’s World Travel Awards (WTA), Diani Beach was named Africa’s Leading Beach Destination for the sixth year in a row while Africa’s Leading National Park award went to the Masai Mara National Reserve. Kenyan sites and services were shortlisted for an unprecedented nine awards at the event. Nairobi has solidified its reputation as the MICE capital of sub-Saharan Africa with new state-of-the-art conference facilities opening all the time to host international meetings, conferences and exhibitions attracting delegates from every part of the world. Among the successful events was our annual Magical Kenya Travel Expo (MKTE), the leading travel show in East Africa, which gives the continent’s tourism industry a chance to network and explore the latest trends and business opportunities. These are exciting times for Kenya’s tourism industry. We are on our way to becoming a global leader in tourism. Join us to building on that success by visiting and sampling magical Kenya diverse tourism products.

World-class hospitality fuels visitor boom T

he Big Five, the Great Migration, a beautiful diversity of landscapes, wildlife conservation, fascinating cultures, 45 national parks, white sandy beaches, highlands and mountain ranges, the incredible kindness and hospitality of the Kenyan people. The list of attractions is endless and anyone who has had the pleasure of visiting this remarkable country will attest to the extraordinary experiences to be had in magical Kenya. It really is the holiday of a lifetime.

appear to be paying off. Kenya’s security landscape has greatly improved, with many travel advisories lifted, and the national government has invested heavily in infrastructure. Grand projects already under way to keep pace with the rise in tourist numbers and open up the region include the Dongo Kundu Bypass Highway, which will make the ferry-dependent South Coast accessible by road; the Mombasa cruise terminal; and upgrades to Malindi International Airport and the Ukunda Airstrip.

The past few years have seen a notable rise in visitor numbers to Kenya matched by huge investments in its hospitality sector – from internationally branded hotels to a state-of-theart cruise terminal – to provide the high-end accommodation and connectivity that the discerning traveller expects.

With these projects under way and with funding in place for an extension to the game-changing Madaraka Express Train Service between Mombasa and Nairobi – continuing westwards from Nairobi to Naivasha and Kisumu – the nation can offer key incentives for tourism growth and an enhanced visitor experience at the coast and on the shores of Lake Victoria.

It is hoped such sustained growth will consign to the past the yo-yoing fortunes of Kenya’s hospitality sector over the past decade, when the country’s huge popularity as a safari and beach holiday paradise was dented by security challenges. Both the government and private sector began a vigorous recovery strategy and the efforts

More African visitors There is now a conducive environment for both local and foreign businesses to set up in the country and for local and foreign travellers to visit Kenya. Among the visitors are ever-growing numbers from African countries, now the second-largest source of tourists to Kenya. The

influx of tourists and business travellers from other parts of the continent has been boosted by the introduction in February 2018 of a panAfrican, visa-free passport and the growth of the region’s airlines. The number of domestic tourists is on the rise, too. Kenya’s flourishing economy has led to

a growing middle class population, keen to flaunt their disposable income. The proliferation of large shopping malls around Nairobi and its suburbs has also created extra space for new luxury hotels and restaurants aimed at local people.

Conference tourism is one of the global industry’s main revenue earners and Kenya, with its central position in Africa, is at the forefront of this sector. Nairobi gained worldwide recognition when it hosted the Global Entrepreneurship Summit in 2015, opened by then United States president, Barack Obama, and in the years since it has consolidated its renown with a string of high-profile conferences, business conventions and trade shows.

its own national park and the world-renowned Masai Mara National Reserve within a threehour drive. Other major cities such as Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu, and Eldoret offer great opportunities for hospitality service providers interested in conference tourism. Business travellers in Mombasa have access not only to the beaches but also to the safari adventures of Tsavo National Park within easy driving reach.

Diversifying

The capital is tapping into the immense potential of the conference tourism sector with a number of big-name new hotels, such as Radisson Blu and JW Marriott Hotel, offering the latest MICE facilities for stakeholders to meet, promote trade and showcase innovations.

Whether you’re a business or leisure traveller, in Kenya you will find a country abundant in natural beauty and local culture. Its Big Five safari thrills and 1,420 km of white-sand beaches may grab most of the headlines, but there are many other attractions to tempt visitors – and which the industry can champion – including its bustling cities, breathtaking mountains, its ‘cradle of humanity’ archaeological sites, strong sporting heritage, wonderful food and its insights into the ways of its 43 tribes.

Nairobi offers these business travellers a range of unique experiences between meetings with

VILLA ROSA

A name synonymous with luxury since the 19th Century Kempinski hotel group brings its signature standards to its Nairobi hotel and lodge in the Masai Mara sumptuous rooms filled with exquisite touches – along with quality restaurants and an excellent spa and pool – more than warrant staying in to enjoy the first-class service.

Food with an international flavour

T

he Kempinski hotel group has been synonymous with exclusive luxury since the end of the 19th century. In recent years it has brought its architectural flourishes and first-class service to two stand-out properties in Kenya. Villa Rosa Kempinski is an opulent 200-room city hotel in the heart of Nairobi’s affluent Westlands district, while Ole Mara Kempinski is a five-star lodge situated in its own private conservancy in the Masai Mara National Reserve.

Villa Rosa Kempinski The 10-storey Villa Rosa is a blushing beauty, with its high pink walls towering above Nairobi’s Chiromo Road. With such a central location, 30 minutes’ drive from Jomo Kenyatta Airport and just moments from the capital’s central business district and national park, the hotel is an ideal base to explore Nairobi or unwind after flying in from safari or beach adventures. Villa Rosa Kempinski has four restaurants that provide impressive international cuisine and have become destination dining spots for discerning foodies in the capital. Lucco is a trattoria-style Italian restaurant and deli, while the 88 dining room serves a delectable choice of Chinese dishes. Restaurant Tambourin serves Arabian-flavoured dishes and has a shisha lounge. Its rooftop location is ideal to take in the beautiful African sunsets. Café Villa Rosa is renowned for offering the best buffet breakfast in Nairobi. For drinks, there’s the Balcony Bar. The manicured garden bordering the back of the hotel, with its park benches and stone statues, is a sweet spot to have an afternoon drink.

The hotel gym features the latest hotel cardio and free weight equipment and there are personal trainers to tailor a workout for you.

Rooms A hotel’s most important feature is its rooms and Villa Rosa doesn’t disappoint. All 200 of them are loaded with exquisite features such as vases of fresh Villa Rosa roses (a species of the flower bred specially for Kempinski) as well as marble-top bathroom fittings and king-sized beds with five alternative pillow varieties if the ones provided aren’t to your liking. All the rooms are spacious, but the suites, including the Presidential Suite where Barack Obama once stayed, offer some of the most luxurious accommodation in Nairobi.

Ole Mara Kempinski Situated on the first private conservancy in the Masai Mara ecosystem, this exclusive camp of 12 luxury tents, a central lounge and dining area and a shaded swimming pool offers an intimate interaction with the area’s spectacular wildlife. As you explore the area on game drives, guided walks or horse rides, there will barely be another vehicle in sight. Here, you will be at one with nature. The tents have been designed to provide optimum views with wrap-around decking verandas to give you front row seats for the stunning wildlife show.

BROOKSIDE DAIRY

Brookside Dairy: making all the difference Processor keen on empowering its stakeholders’ communities

I

n a region where agriculture accounts for a sizeable percentage of national gross domestic product (GDP), the influence of Brookside Dairy, East Africa’s largest milk processor, is impossible to overstate. With over 160,000 farmers, the majority of whom are smallholders, contracted to supply the company with milk each day in Kenya alone, the impact of Brookside Dairy’s contribution to the region’s economy is enormous. In Kenya, the company partners with farmers drawn from more than 27 counties, from the shorelines of the Indian Ocean coast all through to Mount Elgon at the border with Uganda. The drive for empowerment of raw milk suppliers, which include both individual farmers and organised groups, has been at the centre of the firm’s business model, which began two and a half decades ago. And thanks to the massive support from these farmers, who believed in dairy as key to the growth of economies especially in the rural areas, Brookside Dairy is today the preferred market for farmers’ milk in the East African region.

Farmers as principal stakeholders With the largest raw milk supplier base in East Africa, Brookside Dairy is at the core of Kenya and the region’s livestock industry. The company is committed to the growth of this industry, which accounts for 14 per cent of Kenya’s national agricultural GDP. Contracted raw milk suppliers benefit from an array of capacity building initiatives, tailored to

enable farmers to adopt the best practice in the enterprise, while emphasising clean milk production: only the best quality raw milk is presented to the processing house. The company has been maintaining a history of guaranteed payment for all its raw milk suppliers. This arrangement implores upon a farmer to open a bank account and build a credit history that enables him to qualify for other banking products. In essence, the processor has made a contribution to the increase in numbers of the banked population, especially in the rural areas.

Social investment A key facet of Brookside Dairy’s philosophy is hinged on uplifting the living standards of communities where it does business. The company’s social investment has been pro-people, firmly anchored on the pillars of academics, sports and health. In Kenya, the company is synonymous with the popular Brookside Mathlete, a national mathematics contest for secondary schools that seeks to demystify the subject among students. The contest has grown in stature over the years, with participating schools returning excellent performance in the subject at national examinations.

To ensure continuity, students who triumph at the national challenge earn a scholarship to study a mathematics-related course at Strathmore University, a leading institution of higher learning in Kenya.

Nurturing sports talent The company has also facilitated additional opportunity for students through sports. It sponsors the Brookside East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association games, a constellation of finalists from schools in the region, who compete for top honours in a number of sporting disciplines. Students talented in the various games are head-hunted for sports scholarships, courtesy of a partnership between the processor and Strathmore University.

Free milk to schools The mantra that milk is for ‘wealth and health’ aptly obtains for Brookside Dairy. The firm is running a free school milk programme that targets pupils in early childhood centres in Nairobi, as part of efforts to increase school enrolment and retention through emphasis on healthy eating habits. 17,000 pupils in early childhood centres in Nairobi are already benefitting from the programme.

AT A GLANCE hh Largest milk processing company in East Africa hh Free school milk programme targets pupils in early childhood centres in Nairobi hh Scholarships for top student talent in sport as well as

FOREIGN INVESTMENT

M

any renowned international hotel chains are making a grand entrance into Kenya’s hospitality sector, keen to be a part of the country’s boom in global tourism. International visitor numbers are rising at pace – tourist arrivals from the United States and the United Kingdom have grown by double digits in the past two years – and the thinking is that more globally recognised brands of quality will assure even more foreign visitors of the high standard and security of accommodation they can expect in Kenya. It will also heighten the level of competition in the hospitality sector, with top-quality service paramount as hotels bid to stand out. The 2018 hotels report by property consultants Knight Frank shows Kenya has 68 international hotel brands, more than Tanzania and Nigeria, with more striking examples under construction that will change the Nairobi skyline for ever.

16

K en ya A ssoci ation of Hotelk eeper s & C ater er s

A key ongoing development is the 45-floor Hilton Garden Inn in Nairobi’s prestigious Upper Hill district. It is designed to be part of Pinnacle Tower, a 70-floor mixed-use development that is set to be Africa’s tallest building. The American luxury hotel chain JW Marriott will run the 35-floor hotel at the towering AVIC megacomplex in Westlands. It is expected to have 315 guest rooms and a 760 square metre ballroom and is due for completion by 2020. Multinationals Hyatt Hotels Corporation and Ritz Carlton have also that they want a bit of Kenya in their properties list. They will join established brands already in the country such as Serena Hotels, Fairmont Hotels, Jacaranda Hotels, Sarova Hotels, Sentido Hotels & Resorts, Sun Africa Hotels, Heritage Hotels, Sopa Lodges and Kempinski.

International hotels moving to coast At the most recent Africa Hotel Investment Forum, held at the US-owned Radisson Blu in Nairobi’s Upper Hill, the Kenyan government announced plans to introduce a package of

measures to incentivise international investment, including encouraging the development of hotel infrastructure and associated ‘entertainment’ such as restaurants, theme parks and cruises. The hope is that international hotels and companies can be encouraged to add to their portfolio in Kenya’s coastal resorts and provincial cities. Wherever these foreign-owned hotels are located in the country, you can be sure they will be populated with highly trained staff in key positions from Kenya, such is the nation’s reputation for service and welcome.

CITIES

A metropolitan mix of towns and cities to visit Nairobi may be Kenya’s beating heart, but it is possible to escape the capital’s metropolitan mayhem for smaller-scale urban adventures. Here are four Kenyan cities full of cosmopolitan charm that also provide an ideal base when exploring some of the country’s more remote attractions. Mombasa Kenya’s exotic second city is an enchanting mix of Indian, Arabian and African cultures on the coast. New developments such as its extended airport – Qatar Airways is the latest airline to agree direct flights – and its KES 450 million state-of-the-art new cruise terminal have opened the city up to even more visitors, but some of the most striking sights they’ll see on arrival are centuries old. The tapered streets of the city’s Old Town hold delights such as Fort Jesus, a magnificent example of 16th century Portuguese military architecture, and the sensory overload of the Spice Market. The coastal city, blessed with near all-year-round sunshine, is also a great base for a beach break, with miles of flawless white sands within easy reach.

Nakuru Nakuru, the largest urban centre in the Kenyan mid-west, is an ideal base for exploring the Great Rift Valley and Lake Nakuru National Park, one of Kenya’s finest. But there is more to it than that. It has gentrified in recent years, adopting some of the more cosmopolitan elements of Nairobi

without the capital’s overcrowding and stress. More time in the city will give you a chance to visit the neighbouring Hyrax Hill Prehistoric Site, which has the remains of late Stone Age settlements up to 3,000 years old. For foodies keen to try the national dish, nyama choma (grilled meat), Nakuru boasts the reassuringly named Hygienic Butchery, one of the country’s finest exponents of barbecued meat cuisine.

Kisumu

Eldoret

Kisumu, on the shore of Lake Victoria, is one of the country’s fastest-growing cities and the hub of the western Kenya tourism circuit. The lake provides opportunities for boats trips and water sports as well as breathtaking sunsets. The best spot to watch the sun go down is Hippo Point, which affords panoramic views of the lake and, as the name suggests, the chance to see hippos grazing on the shores. Also worth visiting is Ndere Island National Park, which has a forest teeming with a huge variety of bird species as well as the occasional crocodile sighting. You can get an even closer croc encounter at the Kisumu Museum.

This beautiful town in the highlands of western Kenya is building towards city status and has experienced a recent boom in large shopping malls and high-end hotels as it expands. Its affluence owes much to being at the centre of the bread basket of Kenya, surrounded by large-scale corn and wheat farming as well as cattle raising and a dairy industry. Such nutrient-rich fresh produce has fuelled some of Kenya’s and the world’s best distance runners, who come here to train at altitude – Eldoret is around 2,400 metres above sea level. Athletics fans can book a stay the High Altitude Training Centre in nearby Iten to train or just hang out with the world’s best. K en ya Hotel & R estaur a nt Guide 2019

SAFARI

View Kenya’s wildlife wonders Kenya has over 40 national parks and reserves where you can see wild animals in their natural habitat and safaris are the safest and most responsible way to see them. The Big Five (lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant and Cape buffalo) are a huge draw, of course; but, thanks to the sheer diversity of terrain, there’s a true A to Z of animals, from aardvark to zebra. The choice of safaris and accommodation is similarly varied, ranging from rough-andready budget camps and lodges to more opulent offerings for those who enjoy creature comforts as much as creatures. You can also customise your guided transport. Options include an open-topped 4x4, a hot air balloon, a canoe or exploring on foot. Here are five of our favourite Kenyan national parks. Masai Mara National Reserve This area of preserved savannah wilderness in south-western Kenya, along the Tanzania border, is one of the world’s most visited national parks. It has an astonishing mixture of animals, including cheetah, elephant, zebra, hippo and wildebeest. Almost 2 million of the latter are involved in a spectacular 1,800-mile circular migration each year from the northern Serengeti to the greener pastures of the Masai Mara National Reserve. Those on safari in the park from June to September can view its most spectacular yet perilous stage as the wildebeest fling themselves en masse into the raging currents of the Mara River. Tourists will not be the only ones with a

18

K en ya A ssoci ation of Hotelk eeper s & C ater er s

keen interest in the travelling hordes, what with crocodiles lurking in the river and hungry lions, leopards and hyenas waiting for them on the other side.

Lake Nakuru National Park Flanked by the rocky escarpments of the Rift Valley with areas of dense woodland, picturesque waterfalls and its famous soda lake, Lake Nakuru National Park is a lush vision. It includes a poacher-thwarting fenced sanctuary encircling the lake, which is home to 25 of the critically endangered eastern black rhinoceros. The forested area below Flamingo Hill is a favourite lion-spotting point – lionesses love to sleep in the trees – but also attracts leopards

and massive pythons that can often be seen dangling from branches. A myriad species of birds, including the African fish eagle, Goliath heron and pied kingfisher, inhabit the lake and surrounding area. The park’s most famous feathered denizen, the flamingo, was thought to have fled for good due to rising water levels, but thousands of these wading birds can once more be seen tucking into the algae at Lake Nakuru.

Sibiloi National Park For those looking to go off the beaten track for a safari with a difference, Sibiloi National Park should suit. Located near the Ethiopian border on the wild and rugged shores of Lake Turkana, the world’s largest desert lake, this Unesco World Heritage Site has an otherworldly landscape with petrified forests and volcanic formations. Wildlife still abounds in the arid conditions. Head for the Karsa Waterhole, a rare pool of fresh water where zebra, gazelle, lion, leopard, cheetah and northern topi come to drink. Central Island, in the middle of the lake, is home to the largest solitary thriving community of Nile crocodiles – 12,000 at the last count. For those fascinated as much by man as by beast, the area is also known as the cradle of humanity because of the many

discovered fossils of man’s early ancestors, who lived in Africa around 1.5 million years ago before populating the rest of the world.

Chyulu Hills National Park Set among a mountain range in Makeuni County in south-eastern Kenya, the Chyulu Hills National Park rolls with verdant green hills and affords amazing views. Bush walks, horse rides and hill hikes are very popular here and are sure to include some animal encounters. Water buffalo, bushbuck, eland, elephant, leopard, bushpig, forest bushbuck and mountain steinbok are common.

Hell’s Gate The belching plumes of geothermal steam that burst from its scrub-clad volcanoes give the park its rather forbidding name, but there is much more that is heavenly about this remarkable stretch of the Great Rift Valley. The sheer-faced rock of Fischer’s Tower looms over plains filled with strolling buffalo, zebra and gazelle. Only an hour’s drive from Nairobi, it’s ideal for a day safari and easy to explore on foot or a mountain bike. If you want to extend your stay there is a campsite for a night under the stars.

BEACHES

Jewels of the Indian Ocean – Kenya’s best beaches T

ravellers who make it to Kenya’s coast are rewarded with dazzling tropical beaches, each with its own distinct character. Explore a world of lively resorts, secluded hideaways, sacred forests and marine national reserves. Dive in!

Diani With its immaculate stretch of powder-fine white sand, hugged by lush forest and lapped by waves ideal for surfing, Diani Beach is a paradise on earth. Its charms attract a lively, diverse crowd who get their thrills from kite-surfing and scuba diving and party into the night at the resort’s clubs and bars. More sedate attractions include exploring the Colobus Conservation, which preserves the welfare of the forest’s endangered primates, and Kaya Kinondo, the sacred forest worshipped by the Digo people.

Watamu and Turtle Bay Watamu beach is known for its enormous coral reef. This, along with the crystal-clear water, makes it a perfect spot to snorkel and scuba dive. The range of marine life on show is amazing. The reef is patrolled by schools of iridescent fish, while at nearby Turtle Bay, sea turtles nest on a stretch

20

of the beach. If you’re lucky, you could swim with whale sharks – don’t worry, they are big but benign – depending on the time of year. A marine national park has been established, an ideal day trip for divers and snorkellers. For land-based thrills, head out to Arabuko Sokoke forest for a short safari or check out the ruins of a Swahili town from the 12th century at Gede.

Malindi The bustling town of Malindi is known as ‘Little Italy’ by locals because of its popularity with Italian tourists, many of whom have settled here. It also attracts water sports enthusiasts. Scuba divers and snorkellers head for its marine national park, the oldest in Kenya, which covers 213 sq km and is home to powder-blue fish, organ-pipe

coral, green sea turtles, barracuda, dolphins and, if you’re extremely lucky, mako sharks. Get to it by boat – glass-bottomed vessels are available if you don’t fancy a dip – and take in the underwater wonders. Malindi has beautiful beaches, too, and its atmospheric town has historical sites to visit during the day and a cool club scene to make the nights come alive.

Lamu Lamu beach is two miles of pristine white sand and the resort is car-free. Instead, its best-known mode of transport is the dhow, a single-sailed vessel that has carried trade along Africa’s east coast since the days of King Solomon. There are limitless possibilities for dhow trips. You can set sail to watch the sunset out at sea, cruise all the way to Kiunga Marine National Reserve to snorkel and swim with dolphins or be ferried to nearby Shela beach and Manda Island. Longer trips can include a night at sea and having the catch of the day – dhows are also fishing boats – barbecued on the beach and served up with coconut rice for dinner. Backpackers were once the mainstay of the tourist trade here, but upmarket sun-seekers are increasingly filling the boutique hotels in Shela village at the top end of the beach.

Tiwi Often overlooked in favour of its noisy neighbour, Diani Beach, this sleepy, shaded and secluded haven makes up for what it lacks in amenities by being one of the best places on the coast for snorkelling. You can actually touch the coral reef, which is teeming with starfish of all colours, as you walk along the shore. A stable, pool-like area between the shore and the coral is great for swimming and snorkelling. If you still yearn for the playground of Diani Beach, you can easily cross the Mwachema River at low tide to get there.

Shanzu This is a beach with many faces. At low tide its miles of white powder sand sparkles in the sun and you can walk out to its coral reef. When the tide comes in, though, it swallows up all the sand and the waves reach the palm trees at the back of the beach and the walls of the all-inclusive holiday resort hotels that are so prevalent here. A lot of the water sports activities and equipment here only are available to hotel guests, but the secluded beach is popular with locals and there are private companies offering public windsurfing and swimming lessons in the turquoise waters.

Exploring Kenya’s unique cultural mosaic

Jen Watson | Shutterstock.com

A trip to Kenya is about more than just its unparalleled wildlife, breathtaking mountain ranges and blissful beaches. The essence of the country is to be found among the intricate tapestry of cultures and tribes that make up its people. Immersing yourself in the customs, lifestyle, food and ceremonies of these traditional communities is a fascinating and unforgettable part of a Kenya visit.

enya has 43 tribes, countless languages and dialects and presents a rich and diverse human landscape. Cultural tourism in Kenya is focused mainly on indigenous communities such as the Maasai, Samburu and Turkana, who are still holding on to their traditional way of life. Visiting these communities will give you an unforgettable insight into lifestyles unchanged over centuries. You can travel to remote villages where the local people are so welcoming, your heart will be captured before you’ve had time to say ‘Jambo!’.

Lives unchanged for centuries It’s possible to visit schools, head for a village on market day or walk with herdsmen from one of these three pastoralist tribes as they take their cattle out to graze each morning. With the Maasai, you may even get the chance to take part

CULTUR AL TOURISM

On the coast, too, there’s a fascinating cultural heritage to explore. In Lamu, you can take a trip with Swahili sailors on a dhow powered by the prevailing winds of a stretch of the Indian Ocean that was once the world’s richest maritime trading network. The chaotic narrow streets of Lamu, Kenya’s oldest town, pulse with life and take you back to a time when the Portuguese, British and Omanis fought for control over the jewel of the Lamu Archipelago. Its historic sites are now protected as a Unesco World Heritage site. in adamu, the tribe’s famous ‘jumping dance’, and the Turkana also have a rich heritage of songs and dances.

To travel through Kenya is to experience a unique cultural mosaic as old as creation. The country’s heritage stretches back longer than most and the

depth of its history can be seen in its two other Unesco World Heritage sites.

Explore traces of early man At Koobi Fora, on the eastern shore of Lake Turkana, some of the earliest evidence of human habitation on earth has been found and the land surrounding Mount Kenya, the secondhighest mountain in Africa, is a biosphere reserve. The reserve combines respect for its spiritual significance – the Kikuyu and Embu people believe that God lived on Mount Kenya when he came down from the sky, so they build their houses with the doors facing the mountain – and the need to conserve our environment for the future.

CULTUR AL FESTIVALS

Lamu Cultural Festival The oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa celebrates its heritage with a series of events, including traditional Swahili poetry, Henna painting and a Bao competition. Bao is probably the oldest known game in human history, with archaeological evidence suggesting it has been played throughout Africa and the Middle East for thousands of years. The town’s finest dhows are selected to compete in races and there are swimming events, a cross-country race and a fiercely competitive donkey race. Local jockeys spend all year honing their riding skills for this event and the winner wears his title with great pride.

24

K en ya A ssoci ation of Hotelk eeper s & C ater er s

Samburu Maralal International Camel Derby The Maralal Camel Derby is an annual event, held mid year just outside Maralal town. It attracts both local professional camel racers and often markedly less proficient international competitors. While the pros charge to the finish, the less seasoned are often led wherever their camels choose to go. A cycle race is now held alongside the derby, with mountain bikes racing over a demanding course. The cycle race, too, attracts its share of dedicated professionals on world-class bikes as well as local amateurs on machines that in some cases never see the finish line.

Lake Turkana Cultural Festival This event, which began in 2008, brings together performances and cultural traditions from the 14 ethnic communities that make up the majority of the population of Marsabit County, on the eastern shores of Lake Turkana. The result is a kaleidoscope of colour, with each tribe building its traditional huts in front of you and showing off its spectacular traditional costumes, arts and crafts, dances and music. The Lake Turkana festival is one of the memorable events in Kenya’s tourism calendar.

The conservancy also has impressive numbers of elephant, giraffe and other plains game in addition to hosting some of the rarest animals in Kenya such as wild dog.

Hemingways Watamu This five-star boutique beach resort has been the epitome of Kenyan coastal luxury for 30 years and, after a recent large-scale makeover, is better than ever. There is just pristine white sand between the hotel and the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean, which offers a world of activities such as kite-surfing or diving.
