Karibu sana It is my great pleasure to welcome you onboard your Precision Air flight and to the latest edition of our magazine, Paa. We were delighted to launch our training centre in March this year, with the first students on the cabin crew course graduating this June. We are looking forward to starting a new class early in July. We are now making final preparations to launch other courses such as Crew Resource Management course, Aviation Safety Management course, Transportation of Dangerous Goods Course, Aviation Security Course and Aircraft Weight and Balance course among others Other recent achievements include out third party maintenance team concluding major maintenance work on a Hawker 800 business jet. We have also just successfully completed our first in-house aircraft weighing, after certifying one of our aircraft 5H-PWD back to service. We have also recorded another big milestone by having Tanzanian Civil Aviation Authority introduce the industry leading maintenance management software system ALKYM, which is expected to reduce the need for more staff, improve control of company airworthy assets and cut the aircraft on ground time by close to half. In May we were delighted to be able to return to Kenya with the reintroduction of daily flights from Dar es Salaam to Nairobi. The flights not only open up the delights of East Africa's most cosmopolitan capital, but also with Jomo Kenyatta International Airport served by some 50 scheduled airlines, plenty of scope for connecting flights across the globe. It just leaves me to wish you a pleasant flight and to let you know that we are always keen to hear your feedback. Get in touch through our social media platforms or contact our call centre. Latest from Tanzania’s leading airline Tributes to our former CEO
Let us lead you to the Lake Zone With daily flights to Mwanza and three flights a week to Bukoba, Precision Air is the ideal airline to reveal the treasures of Tanzania’s Lake Zone. Here our five attractions that should be part of your itinerary.
Explore Kageye Village
Precision Air would like to extend its condolences to the family of Sauda Rajab, our beloved former group managing director and CEO, who passed away in May. When Sauda was selected for the Precision Air lead role in 2013, she became one of the very few female chief executives of private and public airlines in the world. She was not afraid to make big changes and oversaw an important period of expansion for Precision Air. In paying tribute, current MD and CEO Patrick Mwanri said: “She will always be remembered for her leadership in our organisation and mostly her wonderful and gentle soul.”

This picturesque fishing village on the shores of Lake Victoria is one of the most historic sites in Tanzania. It was the first chieftaincy for the Sukoma tribe, now the country’s largest ethnic group. It also played a part in one of the most brutal passages of the country’s history with captured slaves confined in the village by Arab traders before being taken on a gruelling journey to the Indian Ocean coast. A monument has been constructed in Kageye in memory of the countless Africans who died during the centuries of this evil trade.
See the Bismarck Rock It may look like it is going to tumble from its natural plinth of equally precariously assembled boulders, but Bismarck Rock has been around for centuries and is an iconic sight on the lake shore. Its surrounding park is a great place to take in the views, which are especially magical at sunset.
Saanane Island National Park A five-minute boat trip from Mwanza will get you to East Africa’s smallest national park. The three islets are home to animals such as impala, rock hyrax, crocodiles and wild cats as well as being the only place in Tanzania to find the De Brazza’s monkey.
Take a tour of a coffee farm While the majority of coffee grown in Tanzania is in the northern highlands, the lower climes of the Lake Zone also holds a good number of smallholder farmers who cultivate robusta beans, which Tanzania coffee drinkers love for its powerful caffeine kick.
Visit the rock paintings and ‘Lourdes of Africa’ In caves found near Mugana there are paintings believed to have been created by the Wahinda people to

Joy Hadji Alliy
My left hand How memoir helped lawyer make sense of her stroke Successful commercial lawyer and now author Joy Alliy is a fighter. Last year a stroke left her without the use of the right side of her body and unable to speak or swallow so she used her left hand to write a brutally honest account of her life before and after the stroke and how she came to terms with the condition. Now the memoir, The Metamorphosis of a Butterfly, has been published and Joy is on the road to recovery. Here she reveals to Mark Edwards how the traumatic event led her to re-examine her life.

Taarab royalty plays Fumba Town concert One of Zanzibar’s newest residential developments, Fumba Town, recently paid host to a live concert of taarab music, a genre that dates back to the 1880s on the archipelago. In late April, Siti Muhuram and her band, the DCMA All Stars, performed a selection of songs from her debut album, ‘Siti of Unguja’, which has garnered huge international acclaim and was in May announced as the winner of the Songlines African and Middle East album of the year. Muhuram has familial links to the foundation of taarab music in Zanzibar as she is the great-grand-daughter of Siti Binti Saad, who was the first woman in East Africa to record her music on an album. ‘Siti of Unguja’ is a collection of songs originally

Humpback whales
Humpback whales Fascinating facts
Tanzania is famous the world over for its annual giant migration of grazers across the Serengeti, but there is another equally miraculous journey that reaches the Indian Ocean waters off the coast of Zanzibar. Between June and December herds of humpback whales and their calves reach the archipelago on migrations that can reach up to 8,000 km. It’s a sight that Ekaterina Kalashnikova, who is the general manager of luxury hotel Zanzi Resort and a marine biologist, has been lucky enough to see many times. Here she shares some amazing facts about these playful leviathans of the sea. Images courtesy of: @Pavel Kalashnikov

'The big wings of New England’ This is the English translation of the Latin name for humpback whales, megaptera novaeangliae. It’s a deservedly beautiful name inspired by the whales’ giant pectoral fins, which reach up to five metres in length. It is this length of the fins, combined with their shape and extreme mobility, which make humpbacks so acrobatic and manoeuvrable. The natural efficacy of these fins with their tubercles on the leading edge and their fluid-dynamic mechanisms have even been applied to the designs of watercraft, aircraft, ventilation fans and windmills.

Ekaterina Kalashnikova Cetaceans’ researcher Ekaterina has been working with the Wildlife Conservation Society Tanzania Programme for the five past years alongside scientists and conservationists who have supported in her marine biology journey. She says: “By systematic data collection, having a lot of patience, we can start to gradually unfold more and more of what a whales’ life cycle is about. We are watching them, asking really interesting questions, but still getting very brief glimpses of these sea marvels. Intelligent, peaceful and curious, believed to demonstrate altruistic behaviour, having intricate social communication, these majestic nomads of the seas will forever be captivating minds.”

East African super apps
Ayoba Countries served: Uganda, Ghana, Rwanda, Nigeria Services: Instant messaging, share news stories, videos and images, make money transfers
Apps assemble!
The rise of the super app in East Africa With so many East Africans running their lives on their mobile phones, the market is primed for the arrival of the super app. These bundles of complementary services make it even easier for our mobile-first generation to access a range of consumer functions – such as banking, ride-hailing, communication and hiring traders – all from within the one app. We take a look at some of the best out there.
Download the app: at ayoba.me or Google Play (iOS version to be rolled out soon) It may seem a bit of stretch to bestow super app status on an instant messaging app, but Ayoba is a one-of-a-kind communications platform that allows integrated connections that go beyond just chatting. It was launched in South Africa – ‘ayoba’ is a made-up word popularised in the townships to mean ‘cool’ or ‘ok’ – but in 2019 it arrived in East Africa through MTN Uganda. The app works across networks, but MTN’s customers get 1 GB of free data each month to use its multimedia features such as news and sports channels, music and video chats and to share videos, images, audio and other files with their contacts via end-to-end encryption. It is also possible to make secure money transfers with your contact without having to come out of your chat. Using the ‘MoMo’ option, you can set the amount to send and include a reason for the transfer. You then get to authorise the transaction by entering your PIN code. Just you and the recipient will be notified once the transfer has gone through. MTN Uganda has recently teamed up with Vodacom Tanzania to allow their customers to send direct money transfers between the two countries.

Method 1. Clean the chicken and butterfly it by removing its backbone. Cut on both sides of the spinal cord starting from the rear of the chicken to the neck. After removing the backbone lay the chicken into a flat butterfly position.
7. Let the chicken marinate for two hours.
2. In a clean bowl squeeze and juice the halved lemons
11. Grill the chicken for another 15 minutes so as to crisp up the skin
3. Add the black pepper, lemon zest and salt to the lemon juice
12. Take the chicken drippings, add butter and reduce on low heat until the sauce slightly thickens.
4. Stir the marinade to combine. 5. Make small cuts on the chicken to allow the marinade to permeate throughout the whole chicken. 6. Generously apply the marinade to the chicken.
8. Preheat oven to 180°C. 9. Grill the chicken for 30 minutes 10. Raise oven temperature to 200°C
13. Glaze the chicken with reduced sauce. 14. Garnish with lemon zest and fresh lemon slices. ENJOY!

How to sleep in the skies Air passengers are split into classes…and it’s not business and economy. Rather the divide occurs between those that can sleep onboard aircraft and those that can’t. Welcome Aboard
Fly with a face mask
Safety and well-being on board PASSENGER SAFETY Precision Air takes passenger safety very seriously. Aviation safety isn’t just the pilot’s or the cabin crew’s job – it takes all of us. It is easy for our natural sense of caution to be dulled in our modern environment, where things don’t go wrong very often. Whether in the air or on the ground, your life and the lives of your family members could some day be saved if you make it a point, in every situation, to create a mental plan of action in case of emergency. Here are some important tips to help you enjoy your travel experience with Precision Air – in flight and around the airport.
EXIT ROW SEAT A passenger who is allocated an emergency exit seat: A. Must be both willing and physically able to open the exit doors in an emergency B. Must completely understand the printed emergency evacuation techniques C. Must be 16 years old and above.
PAY ATTENTION TO PRE-FLIGHT BRIEFING Although the information seems repetitious, the locations of the closest emergency exits may be different depending on the aircraft that you fly on and the seat you are in.
CARRY ON BAGGAGE There are strict rules about what you can bring on board an aircraft. Because:
Carry-on bags must be small enough to fit under the seat in front of you or in the overhead bins. Please confirm with Precision Air rules before your travel to avoid delays. *Remember: All carry-on baggage must be left behind in an evacuation.
SAFETY ONBOARD Boarding and leaving an aircraft requires your full attention. As you move to and from the aircraft, you may be in a busy area with many other passengers and cargo, moving vehicles, other aircraft, slippery walkways and/or stairs.
RESPECT YOUR CREW AND FELLOW PASSENGERS Everyone has the right to safe and secure travel. That is why Precision Air employees and the aviation authority will not tolerate any behaviour that interferes with the flight or puts the safety of passengers and crew at risk.
SEATBELTS Seatbelts must be fastened during take-off, landing, during turbulence and any time the crew deem it necessary. Keeping the belt on when you are seated provides that extra protection you might need in case of emergency. If you are responsible for an infant or a child, you must first ensure that your own seatbelt is properly fastened, then secure the child and, if it is an infant, secure the child’s or the infant’s restraints.
A. Not all aircraft have space to store your carry-on baggage.
Important note: There are a number of events involving air turbulence that highlight the importance of keeping seatbelts fastened throughout the flight.
B. In an accident, baggage in the aisles makes it harder to get out of the aircraft quickly.
Though rare, in-flight turbulence is the leading cause of injuries to both passengers and crew.

Paa Tanzania
For the your own safety and the safety of your fellow passengers and crew, we ask you to wear a face mask during the entirety of your flight today. Thank you!
You Are Why We Fly It’s a good idea to keep your seatbelt fastened even when the seatbelt signs are not on.
MEDICAL CONDITIONS AND PREGNANCIES If you have a medical condition and may need assistance during your travel, kindly ask the Precision Air offices or agents about procedures before your flight. If you are pregnant, you will need to fill a Precision Air medical form, to be signed by your doctor, to confirm that you are OK for travel. For further details, kindly ask while booking your ticket from our sales offices and/or customer services.
PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES Use of portable electronic devices such as mobile phones, laptops, tablets, MP4 players, iPads, etc are not allowed during take-off, landing, taxiing, descent and climb. Precision Air prohibits the use of some electronic devices during flight because they emit signals that can interfere with the aircraft's instrumentation. Some of the items prohibited include cellphones, radios, remote-controlled games/toys, laser pointers, iPads or tablets that transmits frequencies, portable printers, walkie-talkies, scanners and laptops. These items need to be stowed away for these phases of the flight to avoid injuries in case of an emergency.
