WELCOME TO BOTSWANA
As the Chair of the Hospitality & Tourism Association of Botswana (HATAB), I’m delighted to welcome you to the 14th edition of ‘This is Botswana’.
We are proud that Botswana’s tourism industry is fiercely competitive and has become the second pillar of our national economy. Through ‘This is Botswana’, HATAB aims to give both potential and returning visitors a glimpse into this thriving sector.
Our country boasts some of the continent’s most exceptional wildlife and wilderness. Botswana’s relative peace, stability, and strategic location make it a haven for nature lovers, with its national parks, game reserves, and the Okavango Delta. Furthermore, Botswana’s rich and diverse culture adds another layer of wonder to the visitor experience.
This ideal combination positions us perfectly to host global and regional meetings,
conferences, and events. Conference tourism significantly contributes to our industry and is poised to propel Botswana’s economic prospects even further.
Gaborone, our energetic metropolis, is rapidly establishing itself as a leading regional convention hub. The capital city also naturally serves as the venue for many homegrown shows and exhibitions that attract both Batswana and international visitors.
Whether you’re visiting Botswana for the first time, returning for another adventure, or a proud citizen yourself, we invite you to experience the wonders our country has to offer.
JOE MOTSE CHAIRMAN HOSPITALITY & TOURISM ASSOCIATION OF BOTSWANA (HATAB)
BUILDING A BRIGHTER FUTURE
This past year or so has been a whirlwind for HATAB as we navigate the postpandemic landscape and rebuild the tourism industry. Our focus is unwavering: to strengthen and diversify Botswana’s tourism offerings.
With over 350 members, HATAB plays a crucial role in shaping the industry. We actively create platforms for members to network, build partnerships, and capitalise on business opportunities within the country. Our annual calendar – including the general meeting, our conference, awards ceremony, and beloved golf day – further facilitates this growth, taking place across Maun, Kasane and Gaborone throughout the year.
A recent partnership with the Botswana Accountancy College (BAC) marks an exciting step forward. Together, we aim to analyse training needs for new and existing entrepreneurs and propel the hospitality industry through research and innovation. This collaboration has been long-awaited, and we’re thrilled to see it come to fruition.
Looking ahead, HATAB has been diligently crafting a robust strategic plan for 20242025. This road map prioritises membership growth, policy advocacy, and business development, promising a period of significant advancement for both the organisation and the nation.
Botswana boasts immense potential for tourism growth, particularly in diversifying
our offerings to cater to the evolving needs of the sector. Currently, tourism is largely concentrated in the north. This presents a wealth of untapped opportunities in other regions, waiting to be explored. We’re already witnessing growth in Gaborone, with a noticeable increase in hotel development.
The Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Events (MICE) sector has also seen significant growth in recent years. In 2023 alone, Botswana hosted several prestigious events, showcasing our potential as a world-class destination. These events have opened numerous doors for the country.
Furthermore, air connectivity is on the rise. Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest airline, has pledged to make the Okavango Delta more accessible with scheduled flights into Maun, the region’s primary gateway. Air Botswana is also undergoing major fleet upgrades. These developments, coupled with ongoing infrastructural advancements, are paving the way for the sector’s continued success.
As we navigate this post-pandemic world, I am energised by the possibilities that lie ahead for HATAB. The increasing recognition and support from the government further fuels our optimism. We firmly believe that the best is yet to come for Botswana’s tourism industry.

UNLEASH YOUR INNER EXPLORER: BOTSWANA’S ADVENTURE SAFARIS
THE OKAVANGO DELTA IS BEST APPRECIATED FROM THE SKIES AND HELICOPTER SAFARIS
Botswana is renowned for its vast wildlife reserves and the iconic Okavango Delta. This biodiverse wonderland offers a multitude of safari experiences, catering to both traditional and adventure-seeking travellers.
EXPLORING THE DELTA BY MOKORO
While the traditional mokoro provides a serene way to navigate the Okavango Delta’s waterways, kayaking offers a more active and immersive experience. Tourists seeking a hands-on exploration can opt for guided kayak safaris. These tours allow visitors to paddle at their own pace, navigating narrow channels teeming with wildlife. For safety purposes, a support boat follows discreetly behind the kayaks.
HELICOPTER SAFARIS
With its intricate network of waterways and islands, the Okavango Delta is best appreciated from the skies and helicopter safaris provide a unique perspective on this intricate ecosystem. These safaris unlock access to remote and untouched regions, allowing visitors to land on secluded islands or deserted stretches. These wilderness
areas can then be explored on foot, offering a true sense of remoteness.
ELEPHANT SAFARIS
For an unforgettable encounter, some tour operators offer elephant safaris, allowing you to learn about elephant behaviour and conservation efforts. While elephant-back riding is no longer available, guided walking safaris alongside these gentle giants provide a unique perspective.
HORSEBACK SAFARIS
Botswana’s diverse landscapes cater to equestrian enthusiasts. Experienced riders can experience the thrill of galloping across the open plains, while beginners can still enjoy the ride with the guidance and support of knowledgeable professionals.
KALAHARI
While the Okavango Delta captures much of the attention, Botswana boasts another iconic landscape - the vast Kalahari Desert.
This arid region offers a different kind of adventure. Quad bike safaris allow tourists to explore the area at speed, while, alternatively, guided bush walks led by trackers provide an opportunity to learn about the desert’s flora and fauna, including the fascinating adaptations creatures have developed to survive in this harsh environment. At night, the absence of light pollution allows for sensational views of the stars.
EMBRACING NATURE
Botswana’s adventure safaris cater to a diverse range of interests and experience levels. From navigating the waterways by kayak to soaring above the Delta in a helicopter, or exploring the Kalahari Desert on horseback, Botswana offers an opportunity to explore the natural world in an unforgettable way. So, if you’re seeking an adventure beyond the traditional Landcruiser safari, Botswana awaits with an array of experiences to unleash your inner explorer.
From the mighty elephants roaming the Chobe National Park to the meerkats in the Kalahari, Botswana is home to an extraordinary array of wildlife. Renowned as a premier safari destination, the nation offers a unique opportunity to witness nature in its most raw and magnificent form.
OKAVANGO DELTA
The crown jewel of Botswana’s wildlife is the Okavango Delta. This UNESCO World Heritage Site stands unique – a vast inland delta transforming seasonally. Lush grassy plains turn into a haven for life as floodwaters arrive.
A CHAMPION FOR CONSERVATION
Preserving the Wild: Botswana is a leader in conservation, dedicating 37% of its land to protected areas like national parks, reserves, and wildlife management zones.
Elephant Sanctuary: Home to one of the largest elephant populations in the world, Botswana takes immense pride in safeguarding these gentle giants.
Meerkat Capital: This land offers the ultimate opportunity to witness meerkats in their natural habitat. These fascinating creatures thrive throughout the Kalahari.
Botswana’s unwavering commitment to conservation, coupled with its spectacular landscapes, makes it a premier destination of choice to witness the spectacle of African wildlife.
A LEADER IN CONSERVATION AND A HOTSPOT FOR WILDLIFE
THE KALAHARI BOASTS A UNIQUE COLLECTION OF BIRDS – FROM OSTRICH AND KORI BUSTARD TO EAGLES.
MOREMI GAME RESERVE
Bordering the eastern fringes of the delta, the Moremi Game Reserve encompasses diverse habitats – permanent waterways, floodplains, grasslands, and even islands.
The reserve boasts exceptional game viewing year-round. Explore the unique landscape in a mokoro (traditional canoe) or on a walking safari, getting up close to the wonders of nature.
CHOBE NATIONAL PARK
Nicknamed “the land of the giants,” Chobe National Park lives up to its name. Witness the spectacle of massive elephant and buf-
falo herds roaming freely. The diverse ecosystems around the Chobe River nurture a remarkable array of creatures. Keen-eyed visitors might even spot lions, cheetahs, and zebras.
KALAHARI DESERT
A stark contrast to the lush delta, the Kalahari Desert blankets parts of Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa. The Central Kalahari Game Reserve, the world’s second largest, bares the captivating beauty of this harsh yet intriguing environment.
Spot unique herbivores like springbok and oryx thriving near the water-filled pans that appear after seasonal rains. Hyenas are common residents, while smaller predators like foxes and mongooses add to the inhabitants.
While encounters with larger mammals like giraffe, zebra, lion, and leopard are less frequent, the Kalahari boasts a unique collection of birds – from ostrich and kori bustard to eagles.
MAKGADIKGADI & NXAI PANS
Lying south-east of the Okavango Delta and surrounded by the Kalahari Desert is the shimmering salt pans of Makgadikgadi along with the Nxai Pans which are believed to be the largest in the world. Most of the time they appear as glaring, white, endless plains. During the rains (December to March), the pans fill and attract large numbers of waterbirds including flamingos and pelicans. Great herds of wildebeest, gemsbok, springbok and zebra also gather, but once the dry season sets in, the water-reliant species migrate to leave an ‘empty’ wilderness with an eerie silence.
LOCAL FAVOURITES AND INTERNATIONAL FINDS
Botswana offers a delicious adventure for your taste buds, from local specialities to international crowd-pleasers. Restaurants, hotels, lodges, and camps throughout the country cater to diverse palates, serving both traditional fare and familiar dishes from around the world.
LOCAL FLAVOURS
Botswana’s cuisine shares similarities with South Africa, but with its own unique twist. Traditional dishes feature locally sourced meats and staples like maize and sorghum. Seswaa, the national dish, is a flavourful combination of meat (usually goat or beef) and thick maize porridge (pap). This hearty dish is prepared by boiling leftover cuts of meat with minimal seasoning and then pounding it. Seswaa is typically served with morogo, a leafy green vegetable similar to spinach, and polenta or pap. Dumplings, rice, and steamed bread are other popular accompaniments.
Botswana’s love for meat extends to oxtail, liver, lamb, and Tswana chicken, all simmered to perfection and served with a variety of carbs and vegetables. Bogobe, a porridge made with sorghum or millet flour, is a popular breakfast option, sometimes enjoyed in the evenings with meat and vegetables. For seafood lovers, the north offers an abundance of freshwater fish dishes featuring bream, tilapia, and tiger fish.
WHERE TO FIND IT
Head to Gaborone’s Main Mall to experience Botswana’s culinary scene first-hand. Outdoor markets and food vendors offer delicious and affordable seswaa and stews. Be prepared to wait during peak hours, but the friendly atmosphere and tasty treats are worth it. Don’t miss the colourful stalls overflowing with fresh fruit, seeds,
and nuts. Try morajwa, a local fruit known as African chewing gum, for its purported health benefits.
Immerse yourself in Botswana cuisine at Mokolodi Restaurant. With its location within the Mokolodi reserve, this restaurant recreates the warm atmosphere of the bush lodges with the chef’s specialities include crocodile and ostrich filets
INTERNATIONAL OPTIONS
Craving a taste of home? Numerous restaurants cater to international preferences. Major cities boast South African favourites like Nando’s, while familiar fast-food chains like KFC, Debonairs Pizza, and Wimpy offer convenient options.
For a fine-dining experience, try Rodizio Brazilian Restaurant in Gaborone. Famous for its generous portions of steaks and seafood, this restaurant is a carnivore’s paradise. Authentic Indian cuisine can be found at Tandurei Indian Restaurant in Maun, known for its flavourful curries with vegetarian options. Marc’s Eatery, also in Maun, offers a casual selection of burgers, steaks, and pastas.
DRINKS
Wash down your delicious meal with a refreshing St. Louis, Botswana’s popular lager. Ginger beer, often homemade, is a favourite non-alcoholic option. For a truly local experience, try madila, Botswana’s traditional fermented milk beverage.
SESWAA IS TYPICALLY SERVED WITH MOROGO, A LEAFY GREEN VEGETABLE SIMILAR TO SPINACH, AND POLENTA OR PAP.
Botswana’s tourism industry is flourishing beyond its renowned wildlife experiences. Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) tourism is attracting a growing number of visitors, bolstering the local economy and showcasing the nation’s potential.
