Every year, communities in Northern Kenya are hit by malnutrition. Children can’t continue going to school, and women and men travel long distances in search of food and water for their families and livestock. In 2023, Kenya was affected by the longest and
most severe drought in recent history, which had serious consequences on people’s access to nutritious food. In response, Village Market launched an initiative at the end of 2023 to raise funds for drought-affected communities through art, in partnership with the United Nations World Food Programme and over 65 East African artists. Artists donated thought-provoking pieces and sculptures worth USD 30,000 for auction, putting their art at the service of strengthening communities’ resilience and nutrition.
As part of the auction, Adam Masava, a Kenyan artist who used to receive school meals as a child through WFP's programme and the founder of Mukuru Art Collective, donated the Art of the Night piece, which initiated the launch of the two-months auction.
The showcase took place at Village Markets’ Art Gallery in Nairobi from 9th November to 9th January. In this remarkable exhibition, we invited Kenyans to make a difference by bidding for and buying art pieces. The generous buyers got to interact with talented artists’ work while also contributing to raising awareness on the impact of climate change on vulnerable communities.
USD 10,000 was raised through art purchases. An additional USD 5,000 was raised through individual cash contributions and the donation of Safaricom Bonga points through *126# (Bonga for Good campaign).
The funds raised will be used to improve resilience and nutrition for food-insecure families in Baringo County, where WFP is implementing the Positive Deviance Hearth Project. This project uses a community-based approach to equip mothers with agricultural skills to reduce malnutrition in their households. The women participate in training provided by WFP on how to plant and grow
vegetables, as well as prepare nutritious meals using locally sourced ingredients. The farmers also have access to a ready market for their produce through the school meals programme. They supply schools with fresh food for the children, which improves their education, health and nutrition. Women are also economically empowered to better support their families.
WFP and Village Market recently renewed their partnership and have committed to scaling up their initiatives in 2024 to reach more food insecure communities.
