The best that there is in the world of food

Food holds a special place in the hearts of many. For some, it is 'Spring Nosherys’ ‘Love at First Bite’ while for others it is the company that comes with the meal they are having. The emotions evoked with food not only bring satisfaction but warmth and love alongside it. There is no better way to spend time with family and loved ones than over a dining table with a glass of wine at hand. The idea of food goes beyond the selection of ingredients, preparation and taste; food tells stories, evokes memories, fosters peace. The list is endless.

Italians are known for their cheese and wine, Ghanaians for their pepper and Indians for their curries. Asian countries for their soups and noodles, Japanese for their sushi. The memories that come with your favorite dish bring such warmth and nostalgia. It never quite tastes the same unless you

are having it in the place where you had it first and loved it most, like the cinnamon rolls from Tiramisu.

Village Market boasts of 45 plus unique stories carried in different cuisines, dishes and drinks. A bite into a juicy burger is sometimes all the comfort you need. From the farm fresh produce, the crisp of the lettuce, the tang in the pickles and the smooth salty taste of cheese. For others, the comfort is through a hot cup of coffee from Spring Valley Coffee or freshly squeezed orange juice from Zucchini. The joy that comes with slicing through a tender medium rare steak from Local Grill.

When asked for a favorite spot, then we are often spoilt for choice. The best we can do is ask you to experience all the restaurants one at a time, peruse the magazine for some options that are sure to ignite your taste buds.

ELEVATE YOUR HOME-BREWING EXPERIENCE

In the comfort of your own home, there's something uniquely satisfying about brewing the perfect cup of coffee. It's a ritual that offers both relaxation and anticipation, a moment to savor before the day begins.

Spring Valley Coffee is proud to offer four variations of coffee pods (capsules) providing a variety of Kenyan specialty coffee from four different coffee regions of the country. These compostable coffee pods are a great alternative to those who prefer quick café-style brewing and flavours, and are available in four variations:

Nelion (Intense Roast): Bold and robust, Nelion is perfect for those who crave a powerful kick to start their day.

With the OPAL Pod Machine, brewing your favourite Spring Valley Coffee is as easy as pressing a button. Simply insert your preferred capsule, and within moments, you'll be enjoying a freshly brewed cup of specialty coffee, just like you would in the café at Village Market.

of the brewing process, resulting in a truly personalised cup of coffee.

Influenza, also called flu, is a viral infection of the respiratory system which can be high during the rainy season. During this season, it is necessary to build up your immune system through antioxidant and anti-inflammatory superfoods such as broth soups and herbal teas like Oolong tea. The integration of these superfoods helps to protect immune cells and fight pathogens due to their antioxidant and anti- inflammatory properties.

Broth-based soup prepared with ginger, garlic, and turmeric improves the body's ability to fight pathogens and help maintain hydration and warmth.

Vitamin C, which is very high in bell peppers as compared to citrus fruits like oranges, supports the immune system by stimulating the production of white blood cells, which play a major role in fighting infections. Another super nutrient during this season is Vitamin D which fights off infection by regulating the activity of immune cells which stimulate antiviral responses. Vitamin D rich food include cod liver oil and sardines.

Pumpkin seeds, hemp seeds, pine nuts, cashews, and almonds are all good sources of Zinc which helps to activate enzymes that support immune cell function and plays a crucial role in the production of antibodies that fight off pathogens.

By slotting in these super nutrients into your diet, it helps to build your body's defenses against influenza and other seasonal illnesses. Intentional healthy food choices based on your health and nutrition status is key to staying healthy during flu season.

HOME and interiors

MOYO

The founders of MOYO embarked on the journey of building a home in Africa that mirrors their personal, European, yet travel-inspired styles rendered through a sustainable approach by using only local materials to empower the local market.

THE APPROACH

The main goal from the beginning of their design process was a home that would explore creativity and the locally made with the circularity concept of rethink, reuse, recycle while meeting every family’s practical needs. The living room had to have a direct connection to the garden and bring the outside in and inside out. The amount of sun and daylight coming in was important as well as the location and time with a proper flow plan for movement around the home featuring textured surfaces, sockets and lighting in all the right places.

A CULTURAL MIX OF STYLES

As lovers of the industrial and brutalist styles they were introduced to in Europe, the availability of metal and concrete was a direct encouragement to build a black home with concrete floors and walls, and floor-toceiling windows in any shape or size their hearts’ desired that would invite daylight, feel organic and celebrate the authenticity of raw materials.

The grey of concrete was also to be a canvas to their eclectic style combining colour or story-rich African fabrics with European and Japanese concepts.

The eclectic style translates through fabrics from the African continent in their purest form adorning the walls, or sometimes turned into curtains, combined with MOYO cushions of the same, feather crowns

forming wall vignettes, Moroccan rugs as well as Dutch and Romanian art celebrating their heritage.

As for the Japanese inspiration, they incorporated the Wabisabi style by bringing nature in like branches, logs, items they would find drifting or washed away at the coast or on a walk in the forest. Wabisabi is more than a style, it is a way of life that celebrates imperfection, impermanence and the beauty of organic, unadorned materials expressing life and its transient identity through items old, touched by time with visible grains or vignettes of natural elements.

LOVE FOR BLACK

When walking through the MOYO store and wondering through some of the products there is a mix of concrete and a love for black. From the signature design candle stands, to their mud cloth and grass cushions, the vanities and side tables from leftover construction beams designed for their home. Black is a recurring colour. Its simplicity and elegance allows decorational pieces to stand out and, taken one step further to the exterior of their home, causing it to blend in with the forest scenery. By using organic, natural materials in both fashion and interior, their hope is to inspire people to live an authentic, beauty inspired life.

After Michelle Hogan had their seventh baby she found herself struggling with her weight and diet. After multiple attempts at different diets, she got into the Keto lifestyle and noticed some very good results. After a year of the lifestyle, she was able to find definition in her arms and legs as well as run a 5k. Taking a walk was easier than just sitting down and watching TV.

The book, Keto in 28, is divided into three parts. Part 1 is an introduction into the Keto diet, equipping you with the basics of this new lifestyle. This part answers frequently asked questions about the Keto diet and ends with tips on how to maintain your exercise programme. Part 2 maps out the first 28 days of your meal plan. It gives you simple, quick meals to make. In this

section you will be introduced to lists and snacks. Part 3 has 122 recipes to help you get into the Keto diet. These recipes will show how easy it is to live healthy and how rewarding it can be to get into healthier eating habits.

The meals presented in this book are easy to make and delicious. The recipes are easy to follow, and the ingredients are easy to find. One of the key parts of these recipes is the “try instead” section. Here Michelle offers alternative ingredients to elevate the taste, try something new or substitute in case there is an intolerance. She also adds in “a closer look” section which elaborates on

certain ingredients including the benefits or even addressing misconceptions. Finally, there is a “kitchen hack” section which helps to simplify the process and save some time and money as you progress in following the diet.

Other than the detailed, simple-to-make recipes, what drew me to this book was the wholesome tips to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It shows that Michelle is not just interested in selling recipes but also promoting a healthy lifestyle. She takes us through how to create our own meal plan, encourages us to keep up the exercise and has some tips on life after the 28 days. Mentioned in the books is a list of spices that are essential in the keto lifestyle as well as the benefits of some of the ingredients.

VILLAGE CAMP

Lamu is a favourite destination and for good reasons. The beautiful beach, littered with golden sands and coral heritage, makes you want to lie down, sun on your face, and soak in Lamu’s glory.

But beyond the pristine beach, at the heart of Lamu Island is the extraordinary ancient Swahili settlement – Old Town – a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. This town of coral stone and timber, with narrow winding streets, intricately carved doorways, museums and open markets, will always blow you away.

The Island also boasts amazing landmarks, including Lamu Fort (initially a castle, then a prison, but now a library), Donkey Sanctuary, mosques and a floating bar that’s easily accessible from Shela, Manda and Lamu islands by boat.

If you have not already placed Lamu at the top of your travel bucket list, then prepare to be wowed. While at it, watch out for the several festivals that happen at different times of the year, including Lamu Cultural Festival, one of the most attended community-based festivals in Kenya. This three-day festival includes activities such as donkey races, traditional henna paintings, dhow sailing races, music performances, and competitive Bao games.

KENYAN WOMEN BUILD BUSINESSES and power thanks to village savings groups.

World Food Programme-supported schemes help fight cultural barriers – and food insecurity.

Agroup of Kenyan women sits in a circle one recent afternoon, a metal box in the middle. It looks like a toolbox except for three telltale locks. Pocket-sized record books lie strewn on the floor. Money changes hands – many times. For an outsider, the process taking place is difficult to follow, but these entrepreneurs know each step by heart.

The recent gathering in the town of Maralal is replicated across the 60 women-dominated village savings-and-loans associations here in Samburu County, roughly a six-hour drive north of Nairobi. Comprising between 15 and 25 members each and supported by the World Food Programme (WFP), the groups offer the women a first, crucial step up the economic ladder in this deeply conservative region.

EDUCATING WOMEN

“I have educated my daughters, who would have otherwise not have gone to school,” says 36-yearold Stella Akai, a mother of seven – and the unofficial ‘mother’ of the Samburu savings groups – ticking off some of the many paybacks.

Like elsewhere in northern Kenya, educating girls is not a priority here. And while women can own property, they cannot profit from it – unless

they do so behind their husbands’ backs.

Akai hopes to change this. Trained and supported by WFP, she has since created and in turn trained 35 savings groups in Samburu County since 2021 – retaining membership to each one and passing on her skills to hundreds of other women.

“The weekly contributions keep me active,” says Akai. “I closely monitor each group’s progress and my presence gives the women the confidence to walk the journey.”

Today, many other Kenyan women are taking that same journey. So far, WFP has supported nearly 3,000 similar savings groups in 11 counties, training trainers like Akai, and connecting women to local government offices that can offer further backing. With women making up

roughly 85 percent of membership countrywide, the groups offer them a powerful vehicle for change.

RESHAPING THE NARRATIVE

“Village savings groups are reshaping the narrative about rural women's economic empowerment. By providing access to finance in the form of savings and credit, these groups are bridging the financial gap for rural women and promoting equal decision making in the family,” says Phyllis Kariuki, a climate risk and financial inclusion specialist at WFP.

Under the scheme, Samburu group members buy between one and five shares per meeting, each worth the equivalent of US$0.07. The money goes into a communal pot for loans that must be repaid with 10 percent interest. At the end

of the year, after recovering all the loans, members then share out the final pot of money – and the cycle starts all over again.

“The methodology is simple – even for the uneducated,” Akai says. “This is what makes the concept stick, once people see the results.”

Last year alone, Samburu members realised roughly 31 million Kenyan shillings (around US$220,000) in savings and profits. That amounts to a sizable sum in a region where those lucky enough to find work earn as little as US$3 a day.

The earnings helped members to launch small businesses and invest in other priorities, such as buying land and sending their kids to school.

“WFP is now helping train the groups in new ways of making a living, such as beekeeping, while exploring markets for their produce,” says Charles Songok, head of WFP’s Samburu office. “The women are saying that they now have the capital, all they need are profitable value chains to invest in.”

LOOKING OUT FOR THEIR GIRLS

Akai has seen those results firsthand. Married as a second wife in 2016, she opted to live separately, to ensure her teenage daughters could get the same schooling she had growing up.

Because of her previous experience with savings-and-loan schemes, WFP trained and paid Akai to form new associations. She is particularly proud of one local group, comprised of former sex workers and alcohol addicts, who have morphed into savvy young businesswomen.

Her WFP earnings allowed Akai to buy livestock, which she fattens and sells at a profit – and to grow vegetables for home consumption and

sale. Bit by bit, she quietly invested in small parcels of land – ensuring her daughters were included in the ownership titles.

“I know that if anything were to happen to me today, all this property would revert to my husband,” Akai says, explaining her secrecy, “and there is no telling where my daughters would end up.”

Rose Lekairab, too, is looking out for her girls.

The 42-year-old farmer and vegetable vendor counts among the roughly 1,000 local women who have joined the Samburu savings movement. Like Akai, she used the loan scheme to set up a vegetable business, then began trading livestock –the region’s top industry.

When Lekairab’s eldest daughter graduated high school, she applied for a loan and opened a food kiosk for the young woman, which later became a small restaurant.

“I didn’t have money to pay college fees,” Lekairab says, “so we started a small business for her.” Now 23, Leikairab’s daughter runs the biggest restaurant in town.

“This is a watershed moment for rural women,” says Phyllis. “This ‘movement’ is dismantling ageold beliefs and propelling women to break barriers – one savings group at a time.”

Savings groups' loans are repaid with 10 percent interest, with the money going into a communal pot that all members can benefit from. Photo: WFP/Martin Karimi

BUN & BEEF: the smash burger specialists

Bun & Beef is redefining the burger scene in Nairobi with an exceptional blend of quality, flavour, and creativity. The journey began with a simple mission: to craft the best smash burgers in Nairobi. This journey has led Bun & Beef to meticulously select the finest ingredients, including halal beef that is smashed thin on the grill to lock in all the juicy flavours, then expertly layered with fresh produce and exclusive in-house sauces. All of this goodness is nestled between soft, daily-baked potato buns. The result? A flavour combination that’s irresistible.

There is more than just beef, with a diverse menu that caters to all tastes with mouthwatering options like loaded fries, hearty chicken burgers, and flavourful veggie burgers. Whether you are grabbing a quick lunch, enjoying a casual dinner, or simply craving a great burger, all offerings are designed to satisfy.

BUN & BEEF

Bun & Beef commitment goes beyond its delicious food, creating an exceptional dining experience with a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere, coupled with friendly staff, ensuring every visit feels special. It is more than just serving food; Bun & Beef believes in building a community of burger lovers who appreciate quality and creativity.

SPECIAL KIDS MENU

Recognising that family dining is the cornerstone of the community, Bun & Beef has created a special Kids Menu designed to delight the younger guests featuring kid-sized versions of classic burgers, cheese burgers and crispy chicken burger. The kids menu ensures that even the smallest foodies enjoy a meal that's just as satisfying as the grown-ups.

Join in the party and discover why Bun & Beef is rapidly becoming Nairobi's go-to destination for burger lovers!
