Myths & Legends

• LOCH NESS MONSTER

The most famous mythical creature in Scotland, nick-named Nessie, is an aquatic serpentine beast which, according to legend, lurks at the bottom of Loch Ness. Have you spotted her yet?

• FIDDLERS OF TOMNAHURICH

On the outskirts of Inverness, Tomnahurich Hill is a small hill, now the site of a modern cemetery, surrounded by tales of fairies. Fairies were tiny yet powerful magical folk in Scottish folklore. They were often feared, as if you upset or offended them, you would suffer the consequences.

• BEIRA QUEEN OF WINTER

We’re all familiar with cold Scottish winters and Beira is said to be responsible for this. She is believed to be the first Scottish legend to ever exist and the true creator of Scotland’s rugged landscape.

• GHOSTS OF CULLODEN

For years, visions of ghosts have been a common sight around Culloden. Legend has it that, on 16th April every year, battle-weary “anniversary ghosts” soldier on to fight the good fight. And once again, the unmistakable sounds of swords ringing and men falling echo across the moor.

• MERMAID OF KESSOCK

Maighdean Mhara were maids of the sea in Scottish folklore. These creatures had the upper body of a woman and the tail of a fish. Sometimes mermaids would marry humans and their sons would become excellent sailors. If a man looked them in the eye or listened to their song he could fall under their spell.

Forts, Battlefields & Bridges

A lawless and roadless part of Britain where rebellions were frequent, the Highlands were once a major headache for the government. To control the region, forts and barracks were built and linked by new roads and bridges. The area around Inverness is an excellent place to get an idea of the effort and investment that went into pacifying the Highlands not so long ago.

To the west, forts were constructed at Fort Augustus (1730) and Fort William (1690), though little remains today of the actual forts. Inverness Castle was strengthed in 1725 and renamed Fort George. This fort did not last long. It was captured and blown up by the Jacobite army in 1746, though not without an accident. The walls were mined by a French officer who blew himself and his dog up in the process. The dog is said to have survived minus its tail.

A few months later, on Drumossie Moor, just outside Inverness, the last Jacobite rebellion ended at the Battle of Culloden. Here on April 16th 1746 the Government army of about 9,000 men, under the Duke of Cumberland, inflicted a disastrous defeat on a Jacobite force of around 6,000. This was the last pitched battle to be fought on British soil.

A massive new Fort George, still occupied by the army, but open to the public, was built to control the seaward approaches to Inverness. It was completed in 1770 but never saw a shot fired in anger. Cawdor

DID you know?
Culloden Battlefield Fort George

Highland Capital

The most important Highland town for over a thousand years, Inverness has been a Royal Burgh since around 1153. The dominant building, overlooking the original crossing place of the River Ness, is Inverness Castle. Forts and castles have stood on the site from the earliest days.

The castle was used as a Court House, completed in 1838, and a prison built in the 1840s but vacated in 1903 when all prisoners were moved just up the hill to the then new Porterfield Prison. You can walk round the outside of the castle from where there are outstanding views over the city and river.

One of the most prominent buildings to the north is the Old High Church – Inverness’s original parish church. Churches have stood on this spot since at least the 12th century. The tower dates from the 15th – 16th century. After the Battle of Culloden, in 1746, the building was used as a prison for Jacobite prisoners. The main church was re-built in the 1770s.

There are several historic buildings nearby, notably Abertarff House built in 1596. Closer to the centre of town is Inverness’s ‘souk’, the Victorian Market re-built in 1890-91 following a fire. It has a wide range of speciality shops.

Wild Boar, Wolves & Mythical Beasts

Beautifully carved stones with bears, wolves, salmon, wild boar, mythical beasts and other Pictish symbols can be found throughout this corner of the Highlands - a stronghold of the Picts between about 300 and 900AD.

After the Picts converted to Christianity in about 600AD, they started to erect exquisite, tall, cross-slabs with intricate designs. These are usually found close to old churches where all too often they had been broken up and used as building material, only to be rediscovered in the 1800s or later.

An excellent collection of Pictish symbol stones and cross-slabs is on display in the Groam House Museum in Rosemarkie. The Inverness Museum has a unique Pictish pendant featuring a cross and an intertwined serpent. At the old church at Nigg you’ll discover one of the finest Pictish cross-slabs in Scotland. Just to the east of Inverness, near Forres, is the impressive, 7 metre tall Sueno’s Stone. It has a cross on one side, and detailed battle scene on the other.

A visit to the 5* Loch Ness Centre and Exhibition is essential for a truly fascinating experience, revealing the history and natural wonders of the world’s most famous loch along with its famous legend - The Loch Ness Monster.

A warm Highland welcome awaits you at St. Mary’s R.C Church, Inverness. Situated on the banks of the River Ness that flows through Inverness, the Church was built in 1837. A series of spectacular new stained-glass windows have been created for the church, including the most recent ones featured by the BBC, in tribute to Australia’s newest Saint, born of Scottish parents, St. Mary MacKillop.

Saint Mary of the Cross, (Mary MacKillop), was born in Melbourne on 15th January 1842 and died in Sydney on 8th August 1909. The years between, saw one of Australia’s most remarkable women demonstrate incredible strength, devotion, inspiration and absolute trust in God.

With so many wonderful locations right on the doorstep or simply a short drive away, Inverness is well placed as a starting point for your Highland adventure.

Inverness is well connected by rail, with the main line from the central belt travelling up through the Cairngorms National Park and on to Inverness. Trains then run West over to Kyle of Lochalsh, just by the Isle of Skye. Or you can take the train up to Wick or Thurso further North. You can also head across Moray and over to Aberdeen by train. There are excellent local bus services connecting all the area’s towns and villages. If you are on two wheels there are plenty of options, with many off-road cycle trails, cycle friendly roads and two national cycle routes. Also, hiring a car is easy in Inverness.

Take the opportunity to get down and around Loch Ness for some monster hunting and great views, or across to Nairn to take in the coast.

Many use Inverness as the starting point of their journey around the North Coast 500. For a special experience and a wonderful self-guided journey, this is not to be missed!

If you prefer a beer, then there are several local options here for you too, with a couple of craft beers and nano breweries available. Black Isle Brewing Co and Cromarty Brewing Co are both great local options, and both have a brewery shop that you can visit to pick up some of their beers. Nessie Brew in Fort Augustus at the south end of Loch Ness, The Hanging Tree Brewery at The Benleva in Drumnadrochit, and also Dog Falls Brewing Co are all great local options worth trying if you can.

There is a good choice of both freshwater and saltwater boat trips here.

For a cruise on the world-famous Loch Ness and a visit to Urquhart Castle, a fleet of four vessels sail, year-round, from various departure points on the Caledonian Canal and at the west end of the loch. Some cruises are served by a direct bus from Inverness bus station. Other boats sail from Drumnadrochit and Fort Augustus. Whether you are monster hunting or taking in the spectacular scenery, a visit to Loch Ness will surely be one of the highlights of your trip. Tales of a large monster living deep beneath the dark expanses of Loch Ness have circulated the world since the first photograph emerged in 1933, the loch itself contains more water than all the lakes of England and Wales combined, and it is surrounded by some of the most dramatic scenery in Scotland. A visit to Loch Ness is not to be missed.

Cruise Loch Ness

Head east to the sea and the Moray Firth if you want to be more certain of seeing wildlife! This is the best spot in Britain to see bottlenose dolphins close up, with trips departing from Inverness Harbour, Avoch, and Cromarty. Experts estimate that around 130 bottlenose dolphins live in the Moray Firth. The dolphins often leap clear of the water close to the shore. Harbour seals are also a common sight, hauled out on mudbanks and sandy shores. Further out, harbour porpoises, white-beaked dolphins, minke whales, pilot whales and killer whales can sometimes be seen.

DID you know?

The Moray Firth Bottlenose Dolphins are the biggest in the world and you can see them for yourself onboard the Mischief RIB trip with Dolphin Spirit.

There is no shortage of activity options around Inverness.

Inverness and Loch Ness have something for everyone. If you are here for a day or two looking for a stand-out memorable experience, or here for a couple of weeks and want to fill your days with enjoyable activities, then you are sure to be spoilt for choice.

For families with young children, the Ness Islands Railway is a public miniature railway. Situated in picturesque Whin Park in Inverness, their locomotives take passengers on an exciting journey over ½ mile long, bound to delight adults and children alike.

For some time in the great outdoors, Glen Affric is a magical mix of native woods, glistening lochs and haunting moorland. It features over 5,300 hectares of ancient pinewoods and is one of the largest ancient Caledonian pine woods in Scotland. Several car parks with picnic tables are available.

Offering a truly special experience, Highland Aviation have aeroplane & gyrocopter flights so you can experience this picturesque region from the skies.

Or, why not visit Inverness for the biggest leisure centre in the Highlands, with a wave pool, a river with geysers, three flumes and an outdoor pool.

There is a good choice of boat trips on Loch Ness and dolphin watching on the Moray Firth. You can fish for salmon on the River Ness and also on many other excellent local rivers. There is good trout fishing in hill lochs and fisheries.

With several stables nearby there are plenty of riding opportunities for all ages and abilities. Loch Ness Riding takes experienced riders for hacks and lessons, either privately or in small groups.

Just to the south of Inverness is the popular Landmark Forest Adventure Park, with many exciting rides and some serious adrenalin boosting activities. Just beyond Landmark is the impressive Highland Wildlife Park with Amur tigers, polar bears, wolves and snow leopards.

The most northerly of Scotland’s great houses. It is the largest house in the highlands, with 189 rooms and is one of Britain’s oldest continuously inhabited houses, dating in part from the early 1300s.

The Gardens

The Gardens were laid out in 1850 by the architect Sir Charles Barry, who was responsible for the Victorian extension to the Castle and who designed the Houses of Parliament. The arrangement of the Gardens, inspired by those at Versailles, have changed little in the 150 years since they were planted. Despite its location so far north, the sheltered Gardens are able to support a surprising range of plants.

The Museum - Open 11am to 4pm

Built by William, Earl of Sutherland as a Summer House and extended by the 3rd Duke, the Museum houses a collection of hunting trophies and other items brought from all over the world, together with many objects of interest presented to the Museum by friends of the Sutherland family.

The Greatest Railway Journey In The World

Fort William to Mallaig

The Jacobite is now running Morning and Afternoon service

7 days a week until Friday 29th October

Described as the greatest railway journey in the world, this 84 mile round trip takes you past a list of impressive extremes. Starting near the highest mountain in Britain, Ben Nevis, it visits Britain’s most westerly mainland railway station, Arisaig; passes close by the deepest freshwater loch in Britain, Loch Morar and the shortest river in Britain, River Morar, finally arriving next to the deepest seawater loch in Europe, Loch Nevis!

The train stops en route to Mallaig at the village of Glenfinnan. Beyond Glenfinnan are the beautiful villages of Lochailort, Arisaig, Morar and Mallaig. You may alight at Arisaig by request to the guard. From here, on a clear summer’s day, you can see the “Small Isles” of Rum, Eigg, Muck, Canna and the southern tip of Skye. The train continues on from here passing Morar and the silvery beaches used in the films “Highlander” and “Local Hero”.
