Early Settlements
First populated around 5000 years ago, the Loch Lomond area shows signs of neolithic settlement at Balmaha, Luss, and Inchlonaig. Similarly there is evidence of bronze age settlements across the Cowal peninsula with cairns on Creag Evanachan and Dunchraigaig. On excavation these were found to contain fragments of pottery, charcoal and flint. Crannogs were also built in the area with one known as “The Kitchen”, on Clairinsh island being used as a meeting place by the Buchanan Clan.
Besieged by Vikings
These early medieval period raiders also sailed up Loch Long, hauled their longboats over the narrow neck of land at Tarbet, and sacked several islands in Loch Lomond. After the sacking of the stronghold at Dumbarton Rock in 870, Vikings used Lochs Long and Lomond to access the early medieval Scottish kingdoms, not only to ransack but later to trade and settle. They were able to move further inland by dragging overland the smaller boats they carried on their longboats.
DID you know?
Dumbarton Castle was the centre of the ancient kingdom of Strathclyde from the 5th century until 1018. It was an important royal refuge. It is where David II and Mary Queen of Scots both sheltered until ships could take them away from their homeland to France and safety.
Dumbarton Castle The National Wallace Monument The National Wallace MonumentShipped by Horse and Cart
Scotland’s historic steamship, the SS Sir Walter Scott has been cruising on Loch Katrine for over a hundred years. Built at Dumbarton in 1900, she was then carefully dismantled and shipped up Loch Lomond on a barge. From there she was taken over the hill by horse and cart to Stronachlachar on Loch Katrine where she was finally re-assembled.
The last paddle steamer built on the Clyde in 1953, the Maid of the Loch, has operated on Loch Lomond for 3 decades. She is currently undergoing refurbishment at Balloch Pier, ‘Hard Hat’ tours are available to see the best of a working shipyard.
Mansions on the West Shore
The west shore of Loch Lomond is home to some significant baronial mansions. The most famous, Cameron House dates from the 14th century and became home of the Smollets in the 1700s. Tobias Smollet, a surgeon, critic and playwright was described by George Orwell as Scotland’s best novelist. Further north is Rossdhu House, dating from a 15th century medieval castle and chapel, its more notable guests have included Mary Queen of Scots. Development in the 1990’s have given it new prominence as a 5 star hotel with one of the top 100 golf courses adjoining. The Scottish Open and European Tour events have been held here.

With so much to choose from, it’s the perfect place for any trip, from weekend breaks to longer holidays.
Balloch and Alexandria at the southern end of Loch Lomond are well connected by rail to Glasgow and the central belt, with the line terminating in Balloch. Another line is available, coming from Glasgow and linking up Helensburgh, Garelochhead, Arrochar & Tarbet, and also Ardlui, before continuing north towards Oban and Fort William. There is also an excellent local bus service connecting all the towns and villages around Loch Lomond. If you are on two wheels there are plenty of options, with many off-road cycle trails, cycle friendly roads and a national cycle route.
The ferry is a great option for connecting to other parts of Scotland, with ports available at Dunoon, Rothesay, Colintraive and Portavadie. Plus, if a boat is your transport of choice, then you can criss-cross Loch Lomond using the Water Bus to reach your destination.

Whisky lover or total newbieeveryone should visit a whisky distillery at least once for a genuine centuries old experience. This area has plenty of famous Malt Whisky distilleries ready to welcome you and share their secrets.
Loch Lomond marks the boundary between the Lowlands and the Highlands of Scotland. This area - so close to the major bottling town of Dumbarton - has been at the heart of the whisky industry for centuries. Sadly though, at least nine distilleries around the Loch have been lost over the years, leaving the Loch Lomond Distillery as the only one left in the area to maintain a proud local tradition into the 21st century. The Loch Lomond Distillery is not open for tours but do keep an eye out in shops and behind the bar so that you can try their fantastic whiskies.
If you would like to visit a distillery, then not too far from the southern end of Loch Lomond you will find two good options. The Auchentoshan Distillery and the Glengoyne Distillery both offer tours and tastings, assured to be an excellent experience. Slàinte!
Away from whisky, the Loch Lomond Distillery also produces Ben Lomond Gin that’s also well worth looking out for. At the Strathleven Distillery, they have explored new frontiers with what they call a “Single Malt Gin” and the world’s first Single Malt Vodka.
DID you know?
It is thought that by 1816 the illegal stills on the islands of Loch Lomond were producing an estimated 100 gallons of whisky a day for consumption in Glasgow.
For a distillery you can visit in the area, The Isle of Bute distillery in Rothesay offers it all, with a gin garden, a shop, and tastings.
For craft beer, Loch Lomond Brewery in Alexandria combine the highest quality malts and a diverse range of hops from across the world with exceptional water, fresh from Glen Finlas in the foothills to the west of Loch Lomond, they create award-winning beers that you’ll surely love.

The Loch Lomond Bird of Prey Centre, near Balloch, offers daily flying shows allowing visitors a fascinating close-up encounter with 35 birds of prey representing 22 different species. Learn about their unique features as well as the threats they face in the wild.
Nearby, is the Loch Lomond SEA LIFE Centre. Home to myriad sea life tanks, plus walk-through ocean tunnel of sharks and giant turtles. Explore 7 themed zones including a Tropical Ocean Tunel where you can come face to fin with Blacktip sharks, rays and other critters of the sea.
Step back in time at Inveraray Jail, County Prison of Argyll in the 1800s, and experience what real life was like for men, women and children – some as young as seven – who were tried and locked up there. Explore the atmospheric historic buildings and meet the costumed characters who animate the past.
There’s no shortage of walks around Loch Lomond and the Trossachs. The diversity of challenging mountains routes, sweeping hillside walks or strolls along the loch front means that there is something for everyone. If Ben Lomond or the Cobbler are too daunting, try Conic Hill on the south east side of Loch Lomond. With an ascent of just over 300 metres, it provides fantastic views of the surrounding hills and the islands of Loch Lomond.
TThe whole spectrum of activities is here. On the water; hire a boat or join a tour, learn to sail, maybe water-ski or try out wakeboarding or a paddleboard. On land, the choice of activities is just as varied and expansive.
Loch Lomond Leisure at Luss is one activity operator with watersports and boating activities galore. For an unforgettable experience, take a speedboat tour, calmly cruising the shoreline one moment and zooming across open water the next.
For something more active try out Loch Lomond Watersports, at Luss, where families can have a go waterskiing, wakeboarding, kayaking, canoeing and paddle boarding.
Further afield at Aberfoyle is Go Ape. Home to two of the longest zips in the UK, you’ll be flying over trees and waterfalls with unprecedented, seasonal views of the hills, valleys and Highlands. Not for the faint hearted is their Treetop Challenge with a combination of extreme stirrups, wobbling Stack Line challenge and teetering Half Trapeze!
hink Loch Lomond – think water – think adventure. DID you know?
The Loch Lomond Monster never made the headlines in the way that its most northerly cousin did. However, it has made the headlines from time to time!

The Greatest Railway Journey In The World
Fort William to Mallaig
The Jacobite is now running Morning and Afternoon service
7 days a week until Friday 29th October
Described as the greatest railway journey in the world, this 84 mile round trip takes you past a list of impressive extremes. Starting near the highest mountain in Britain, Ben Nevis, it visits Britain’s most westerly mainland railway station, Arisaig; passes close by the deepest freshwater loch in Britain, Loch Morar and the shortest river in Britain, River Morar, finally arriving next to the deepest seawater loch in Europe, Loch Nevis!
The train stops en route to Mallaig at the village of Glenfinnan. Beyond Glenfinnan are the beautiful villages of Lochailort, Arisaig, Morar and Mallaig. You may alight at Arisaig by request to the guard. From here, on a clear summer’s day, you can see the “Small Isles” of Rum, Eigg, Muck, Canna and the southern tip of Skye. The train continues on from here passing Morar and the silvery beaches used in the films “Highlander” and “Local Hero”.
