Crannog Country Loch Tay is one of Scotland’s crannog hotspots. Had you been here 2,500 years ago you would have seen many of these thatched roundhouses, standing well out from the shore on wooden piles like miniature oil rigs. Some were linked to the land by causeways, others were built on man-made islands and reached by boat. Not much was known about them until a team of underwater archaeologists carried out a survey from 1980 onwards of the Oakbank crannog at Fearnan on the north side of Loch Tay. They found out precisely how it was built and discovered food, utensils, clothing and a butter dish with butter still clinging to it, plus hazel hurdles, ropes of twisted willow and two canoe paddles. Based on this meticulous research, a replica crannog – The Scottish Crannog Centre – was built nearby at Kenmore. It provided a fascinating introduction to life beside the loch in iron age times.
Roman Frontier At the furthest reaches of the Roman Empire, Ardoch Roman Fort, surrounded by successive rings of ramparts and ditches, is one of the best preserved and most impressive Roman forts in Britain. Built in around 80AD and reoccupied some 60 years later, it is just off the A822 at the north end of Braco village.
Extreme Engineering One of the most amazing engineering achievements of the early 19th century was the construction of the Bell Rock Lighthouse. It was built on a treacherous reef, 11 miles offshore, that was only exposed for two hours either side of low water. You can find out all about this fascinating lighthouse in the Arbroath Signal Tower Museum, once the shore station for the lighthouse.

Edzell Castle
DID you know? In 1901, when the Royal Research Ship Discovery set sail to the south, there was less known about Antarctica than we now know about planet Mars.
Great Castles & Stately Homes Perthshire, Dundee and Angus are well known for the great Blair Castle, Glamis Castle and the Palace of Scone, the crowning place of Scottish Kings. Less well known, and well worth visiting, are Edzell Castle with its historic garden, the spectacular sixteenth century Castle Menzies, Huntingtower Castle with its painted ceilings and the island castle of Loch Leven, in Kinross, from which Mary Queen of Scots famously escaped.

Meigle Pictish Stone Museum
Wolves, Wild Boar & Mythical Beasts Beautifully carved stones with bears, wolves, eagles, salmon, mythical beasts and other Pictish symbols can be found throughout Perthshire - a major stronghold of the Picts between about 300 and 900AD. After the Picts converted to Christianity in about 600AD they started to erect superb cross-slabs with intricate designs. These are usually found close to old churches where they had all too often been broken up and used as building material, only being rediscovered in the 1800s or later. Outstanding collections of Pictish stones are on display in St Vigeans Museum, Arbroath, the Meffan Museum, Forfar and one of the largest collections of Pictish carved stones in Scotland is gathered together in the Museum in the old schoolhouse in the village of Meigle. At Fowlis Wester, near Crieff, the stone is a large cross slab currently housed inside a lovely historic church, with a full-size replica outside in the village square where it may have stood for centuries. The most magnificent is the Dupplin Cross, in St Serf’s Church, Dunning. Other symbol stones and cross slabs, still standing at or close to their original sites, are to be found at Aberlemno and Glamis

Dewar’s Aberfeldy Distillery
hisky lover or total newbie – everyone should visit a whisky distillery at least once for a genuine centuries old experience. Perthshire, Dundee and Angus has plenty of famous Malt Whisky distilleries ready to welcome you and share their secrets.
Dewar’s Aberfeldy Distillery produces a malt whisky that has long formed the backbone of Dewar’s world-famous blends. Andrew Carnegie helped its sales in the United States by sending a keg of Dewar’s Scotch Whisky to the White House on the occasion of President Benjamin Harrison’s inauguration. Eight years later he sent the same gift to President James Garfield on his inauguration.

DID you know? Arbikie Distillery distilled Nàdar, the world’s first climate positive gin and vodka, and brought back the first Scottish Rye Whisky in nearly 200 years! The Glenturret distillery near Crieff is very much on the whisky trail, now an award winning five-star visitor attraction, The Glenturret Experience invites guests to experience the handmade distilling processes that have been used to craft the malts of Glenturret Distillery for generations. In Pitlochry you’ll find both the Blair Athol distillery and on the hill just above the town, the traditional farm distillery of Edradour - the smallest distillery in Scotland. Glenturret Distillery

Malt whisky distilleries offer a variety of behind-thescenes tours. Here you’ll experience the processes that must be gone through before a grain of barley is converted into a drop of malt whisky. Slàinte! For gin lovers there is also plenty of choice, including the Perth Distillery on the banks of the River Tay in Perth, producers of an award-winning pink gin, or you might try Strathearn Distillery, one of Scotland’s smallest distilleries situated between Perth and Crieff. At the foot of Glenshee, about 10 minutes from Blairgowrie, you’ll find Persie Distillery who offer a fantastic tour and tasting session if you book ahead, or alternatively the Gatehouse Gin is distilled at the Wyndham Duchally Country Estate close to nearby Gleneagles.

BUTCHERY, DELI & DRINKS
Dundee is known for it’s Dundee Cake. Legend has it that the first one was made for Mary Queen of Scots. However physical records state that Janet Keiller was the first to create this buttery sultana cake around 200 years ago! Flavoured with candied orange peel and decorated with blanched Spanish almonds, the local delicacy can be bought from bakeries throughout the city and is often found on the menus of contemporary cafes and restaurants in and around Dundee. Another delicacy from the area is the ‘Arbroath Smokie’. Haddock, which has been salted, tied, dried and placed in a special barrel containing a hardwood fire where they are hung to smoke until the golden-copper tones of a true Arbroath Smokie are achieved. No one knows for certain where this method came from but it is believed to have originated from Scandinavian settlers in Scotland. With its uniquely savoury flavour, you’ll find it in many local eateries here!

For the ultimate adrenalin buzz you could take a 40-metre bungee jump plunge, or go white water rafting and kayaking, river bugging, canyoning or sphering. Other options include ballooning, tank driving, or riding a Segway, the newest way to get around on two wheels. Or you could try four wheels with an exhilarating quad trek experience with Highland Offroad at Dunkeld. Another inspiring and family friendly place is Avertical World with its indoor climbing centre. Indoor climbing is great exercise, builds stamina, strength and skills, it’s exciting as well! Here they have 2 forms of climbing; you can either don a harness and climb a 5 to 10-metre-high wall or try your hand at Bouldering; a form of free climbing without ropes or harnesses. For something different head over to Dundee Ice Arena. A wonderful facility for young and old, offering a great range of ice sports and activities. Try your hand at ice skating, curling or see the Dundee Stars! Extreme sports fans should head to The Factory Skatepark, the UK’s first custom built indoor arena for Boarding, Blading and BMXing. There is no shortage of enjoyable horse-riding opportunities, with most centres offering hacks and treks no matter what your age or ability. The salmon and trout fishing here is among the best in Scotland, with grayling being another local specialty. There are plenty of coarse fishing options and a good choice of excellent fisheries.
