There is a great choice of castles here, from cliff top ruins to spectacular reconstructions. At the north end of Skye, the Macleod stronghold of Dunvegan is the oldest. It has been continuously inhabited by the Macleods for over 800 years, and has been adapted and extended many times, including a romantic, exterior restoration between 1840 and 1850.
On an island in Loch Duich, Eilean Donan has to be one of Scotland’s most picturesque castles. There have been castles of varying sizes here since the 13th century. In 1719 when the castle was garrisoned by 46 Spanish soldiers, it was attacked by a government force of three frigates, taken, and blown up. It remained a ruin for over 200 years and was only reconstructed in the early 20th century.
At the south end of Skye is the well-known castle of Armadale, the seat of the Macdonalds. Built in the early 1800s it was lived in for only just over 100 years. Today the main part of the building is a dramatic ruin, while nearby, telling the story of Clan Donald, is the excellent Museum of the Isles.

Dun Telve Broch, Glenelg Eilean Donan CastleSkye was originally settled by Gaelicspeaking Scots from Ireland before being ruled by Norsemen between the 9th and 12th century.
Skye and Lochalsh is one of the best places to discover brochs – extraordinary 2000 year old circular drystone towers. Unique to Scotland they occur nowhere else in the World. Brochs were built for defence with just one narrow entrance and no windows. Up to 13 metres high they have a massively thick tapered wall with internal galleries and stairs.
Some brochs to visit on Skye are Dun Beag, Dun Ardtrek and Dun Fiadhar. To get a really good idea of what an almost complete broch would have looked like take the ferry across to Glenelg. There you’ll discover two outstanding brochs, Dun Telve and Dun Troddan.
Dun Beag Broch, Bracadale SkyeTurn the clock back and cross over the sea to Skye on the historic Glenelg Ferry. This is the only manually operated turntable ferry in the World. These ferries were once a familiar sight up and down the west coast. Before the ferry, this narrow channel at Kylerhea was once the traditional crossing point for cattle on their way to the markets in the south, tied nose to tail and made to swim across the narrows behind a small boat.
At Inverarish on the south end of the Isle of Raasay you can still see traces of an iron ore mine. A substantial operation with a railway, crusher, firing kiln and pier, it operated during the First World War. From 1916 it relied on the labour of some 260 German prisoners of war. Two of them died on the island, one from a roof fall in the mine and one from other causes.
Skye once had Britain’s only ‘shark factory’, established in 1946 on the Isle of Soay by the well-known author Gavin Maxwell. You can still see the building where the basking sharks were brought ashore and oil processed from their livers. A large shark could have a liver weighing up to a tonne, this would yield between 200 and 400 gallons of oil. This venture was never viable and closed after 3 years and Maxwell went on to become a well-known author and naturalist.

There is a history of illicit distilling and smuggling of whisky in Scotland from the 18th century onwards, with tales of whisky gangs, and the unusual methods taken to evade the authorities.
The Isle of Raasay, only a short 25-minute ferry from the Isle of Skye, has its own stories intertwined with illicit distilling. However, you can now visit the Isle of Raasay Distillery, the first ever legal distillery on the island. You will be warmly welcomed at their award-winning visitor centre.
In the west of Skye, you’ll discover Talisker Distillery with its swan neck lye pipes and condensing coils that give the spirit its fuller flavour. Talisker is the oldest working distillery on the Isle of Skye and is set on the shores of Loch Harport with dramatic views of the Cuillins. It has recently undergone an exciting renovation project, reopening in 2022, and is well worth a visit.
In the south of the island you’ll find Torabhaig Distillery housed in a steading built from the ruins of the 14th century Knock Castle. A perfect location to produce a robust island whisky.
Talisker Distillery Talisker DistilleryIsle of Skye Distillers was founded by brothers Thomas and Alistair Wilson, the Isle of Skye Distillers launched their first expression (Misty Isle Gin) in February 2017. The brothers were born and raised on Skye and are extremely passionate about promoting the island and it’s products to a wider audience.
Malt whisky distilleries offer a variety of behind-thescenes tours. Here you’ll experience the processes that must be gone through before a grain of barley is converted into a drop of malt whisky.
There are also several gins distilled locally, including Skye Gin from the northern village of Uig, Misty Isle Gin from the Isle of Skye Distillers who have a shop and gin school in Portree, as well as a smooth and zesty Isle of Raasay Hebridean Gin from the aforementioned Isle of Raasay Distillery. Lastly, in Lochalsh near the iconic Eilean Donan Castle, the Fairytale Distillery at Ardelve has a shop where you can pick up one of their gins, or even some rum or absinthe.

If you’re looking for a boat trip offering stunning scenery and wildlife spotting opportunities, you’ll be spoiled for choice in Skye and Lochalsh.
Between April and October sail over the sea to Skye on the last surviving manually operated turntable ferry in the world. The short crossing from Glenelg is an experience not to be missed. The ferry features in the 2008 movie ‘Made of Honor’ starring Patrick Dempsey. For something a little different join Seaprobe Atlantis on a glass bottom boat tour departing from Kyle of Lochalsh. You’ll visit a magical kelp forest which is home to a host of marine life including crabs, sea urchins, fish and jellyfish - and the best part is, you won’t need to wear a diving suit.
The Isle of Skye and Lochalsh are great places to spot both common and grey seals. The best way to get close to them is with an expert guide. Calum’s Seal Trips depart regularly from Plockton ‘the jewel of the Highlands’. Calum is so confident you’ll see seals on his tours, that you won’t have to pay if you don’t.
Puffins are a seasonal favourite with visitors to Skye and Lochalsh. Between May and July, SkyeXplorer offers 90 minute boat trips departing from Uig. Puffins are guaranteed on these tours, and if you’re lucky white tailed sea eagles and marine life too.
Summer is also a good time to try and spot some more elusive creatures such as basking sharks, orcas and dolphins in the waters around Skye and Lochalsh. Try one of the four trips aboard MV Stardust around Skye, Raasay and Rona.
Sailing from the tiny village of Elgol on the tip of the Strathaird peninsula on the Isle of Skye across the clear waters of Loch Scavaig to the very heart of the spectacular Cuillin mountains, you will experience the very best of Skye scenery coupled with the possibility of a glimpse of some of our amazing wildlife. Enjoy the commentary for your local skippers whose experience and knowledge of this unique area is second to none.
For a great day out combining wildlife, breathtaking mountain scenery and rugged hiking trails, Misty Isle Boat Trips offer regular sailings between Elgol and Loch Coruisk on Skye. Trips can be booked one way or return, giving you time to explore one of Scotland’s most beautiful lochs at your leisure.
And for a boat trip you’ll never forget - it doesn’t get more dramatic than a visit to St Kilda. The archipelago with its towering cliffs and jagged sea stacks lies in the Atlantic Ocean, 85 miles off the coast of Skye. The last inhabitants left St Kilda in 1930 after 4,000 years of human occupation. Today, the islands are a National Nature Reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Home to a million seabirds, including gannets, great skuas, storm petrels, Atlantic puffins and more.

The best way to see as much of the island as possible is by car; even the more remote attractions such as Talisker Waterfall become accessible. Brush up on your ‘passing place’ etiquette for a hasslefree day out.
Many places, such as Neist Point and Mealt Falls have large free car parks while others at the Fairy Ring or Quiraing do charge. Remember that digital coverage on the island maybe intermittent with implications for parking apps and map reading!
A wide range of makes, models and size of vehicles are available to hire on the island, from small economy cars to minibuses and motorhomes. These can be collected or delivered to drop off points including Kyle Station or the Calmac ferry terminals. One way car hire is also available.
You can cross over to Skye by the Calmac Ferry from Mallaig to Armadale or take the historic ferry from Glenelg to Skye on Scotland’s last manually operated turntable ferry. For decades, the ferry has carried vehicles and passengers over the Kylerhea straits in all weathers. Calmac also operate the Sconser to Isle of Raasay ferry.
Taking a bus tour is probably the easiest, most relaxed way to travel around Skye & Lochalsh for visitors of any age or ability. In the capable hands of knowledgeable guides, you’ll see the best of the island’s scenery and wildlife: photo stops included !
Tours can be half day or full day trips and will take in sights such as the Fairy Pools, the Quiraing, Old Man of Storr and the Neist Point Lighthouse. Alternatively, some companies will offer bespoke tours, allowing you to set your own agenda. Transfer and pick up services can also be provided. Or, why not let Gus’s Taxis take the strain as they transport you around the island in their friendly, efficient way.
For a more active look at Skye & Lochalsh, without the worry of planning, walking tours are available year-round from several companies. Guides will be professionally qualified and prepared for any conditions the Scottish climate can produce. Pick up and drop off services are usually available.
You could climb a Munro, traverse a ridge, gorge walk, coasteer or even climb a sea cliff. Trails can take you past stunning waterfalls or through the remote and magnificent scenery of Kintail. Or, why not take in one of the superb beaches or bays at Talisker, Camasunary or the Coral Beach north of Dunvegan? In the southern tip of the island you can venture to the Point of Sleat with fantastic views over to Rum, Canna and Eigg.
There are lots of options for bike hire on the island from traditional road bikes to mountain bikes or even e-biking around the Trotternish Peninsula. Fully serviced and prepped bikes can be collected from store or delivered to your accommodation, bike racks can also be provided.
Ennjoyable days out for the whole afamily, fun for the kids, activities for the aadventurous, and amazing experiences for everyone.
The Fairy Glen is a unique and unusual landscape, a geological wonder on the Isle of Skye. It is situated between the villages of Sheader and Balnacnoc.

Skye has a superb range of activities for you to enjoy.
You could search for wildlife on land, look for excitement on the water or participate in outdoor sports and pursuits. Outdoor centres offer activities of all kinds; you can climb, abseil or go mountain boarding –think snowboarding on wheels! Or on the water why not try kayaking or canoeing?
Learn a new activity or advance your skills under the guidance of an expert or just spend a great day out doing what you love.
You can join a wildlife cruise or sea safari around Skye’s sheltered bays. Spot wildlife above and below the waves through a glass bottom boat. You could whale watch in the Sound of Sleet, get up close to a seal colony or spot a sea eagle on a wildlife cruise from Plockton. Look out for otters and porpoise, even basking sharks as well as puffins and a rich assortment of seabirds. Island explorer expeditions, short excursions and fishing trips run regularly or you can hire your own boat.
On land you can venture off the beaten track with guided walks through the heart of the Cuillin Mountains, around mystical Loch Coruisk, or explore the hidden canyons and ridges of the Quiraing and see the night sky as nature intended with little or no light pollution.
Whitewave Wilderness ScotlandExperience the thrill of exploring on horseback. Gallop like the wind or trot at a leisurely pace. Stables cater for all riders, offering pony trekking, horse riding or lessons.
The Fingal Centre in Portree facilitates a number of activities including: badminton courts, climbing wall, fitness suite, outside all weather pitches. The swimming pool also has a steam room and sauna.
Tales of myth and folklore are woven into the fabric of the island’s legendary castles. Step back in time and watch centuries of history come alive before you. You can walk through the home of a Clan Chief and admire treasures in majestic rooms as you meander through Scottish history. This most mountainous of islands has two delightful gardens, while on the mainland, at the head of Loch Carron, a quite exceptional private garden is open to the public.
Dunvegan castle’s recently restored gardens are a star in their own right. Here you’ll discover a Water Garden, with a tumbling burn, ornate bridges and a series of waterfalls, and a more formal Round Garden – with sixteen triangular flower beds arranged in a circle. The Walled Garden has a delightful lily pond, a pergola with roses, and glass houses.
At the southern end of the island, around the sculptured ruins of Armadale Castle are 40 acres of gardens and old woodlands. A rewarding place to visit, the gardens have plants from Chile, Australia and New Zealand, with terraced walks, herbaceous borders, ponds, and network of inviting trails.
Across the Skye Bridge at the head of Loch Carron, is Attadale one of the most beautiful west coast gardens, or rather a series of gardens. Immaculately maintained, with a fascinating collection of plants from all over the world, and many engaging sculptures, they are a delight to visit throughout the year.

The most northerly of Scotland’s great houses. It is the largest house in the highlands, with 189 rooms and is one of Britain’s oldest continuously inhabited houses, dating in part from the early 1300s.
The Gardens
The Gardens were laid out in 1850 by the architect Sir Charles Barry, who was responsible for the Victorian extension to the Castle and who designed the Houses of Parliament. The arrangement of the Gardens, inspired by those at Versailles, have changed little in the 150 years since they were planted. Despite its location so far north, the sheltered Gardens are able to support a surprising range of plants.
The Museum - Open 11am to 4pm
Built by William, Earl of Sutherland as a Summer House and extended by the 3rd Duke, the Museum houses a collection of hunting trophies and other items brought from all over the world, together with many objects of interest presented to the Museum by friends of the Sutherland family.
“ Fascinating Experience” “Absolutely Loved It
At the start of your visit, discover some of the gruesome punishments in use before the age of prisons. Try out the thumbscrews and see how much pain you can withstand!
Take your seat alongside the jury and witnesses, slip back 150 years and eavesdrop on fascinating trials held in this very room.
Talk to the warders, matron and prisoners and get a first-hand account of life in a 19th century prison.
Introduced in 1852, whipping was deemed a suitable punishment for children. Girls were spared. Today, anyone can try it.
Or the Crank Machine?
A prisoner would have to turn it 14,400 times a day, truly the definition of a pointless exercise.
A great photoopportunity!
Originally the airing yards were used as a secure way to exercise the prisoners outdoors, on a daily basis, alone and in silence.
Come face to face with our rogues, in prison for murder, arson, assault ..and stealing turnip!
Discover the gripping, real-life, crime stories. Prison records give us an accurate account of the people who were tried and punished here. Did the punishment fit the crime?
On entry all children are given a Parole Certificate. They must stamp their certificate with the embossers located throughout the Jail to be able to escape and to receive a free gift. Strangely, most parents do not want them finding all the stamps, but the guides will help!
