elcome to Arran, Scotland’s most extraordinary and wonderfully varied island, half highland, half lowland, with hard rock and high hills in the north, and softer rock and fertile farmland in the south.

The north has some of the best hill-walking in Scotland, with the summit of Goatfell 874m (2867ft) being reached by a wellmaintained trail from Brodick. Arran offers lots of opportunity for walks, whether in the hills or along the forestry tracks or coast. Always make sure you wear good walking boots and are well prepared for changing weather. Lowland walks are plentiful and Arran Coastal Way offers a popular 67 mile route around the island. Noted as one of Scotland’s Great Trails, it’s ideal for doing small sections if you don’t have time for it all! Goatfell

Wildlife is plentiful; Arran boasts all of Scotland’s Big Five as identified by Scottish Wildlife Trust. Red deer, golden eagles, red squirrels and along the coast, otters and seals can be found all over and around Arran. Dolphins, porpoise and basking sharks are common in summer months and minke whale can also sometimes be seen. Arran is a bird watchers paradise with raptors and seabirds aplenty. With seven golf courses you’ll have plenty of options, especially with an Arran Golf Pass. If you want to stretch yourself, think about trying out a new activity, perhaps kayaking, gorge walking, pony trekking or try out some of the great mountain bike trails. Machrie Moor Standing Stones

Castles Large and Small There are some superb castles here. The medieval stronghold of Caerlaverock, surrounded by a moat, stood guard over the Solway Firth for more than 400 years. Also protected by water is the enchanting Castle Threave, once a stronghold of Archibald the Grim. It is situated on an island in the middle of the River Dee and is reached by boat. MacLellan’s Castle in the heart of Kirkcudbright is the impressive residence of a powerful local family. Look out for the laird’s lug, a spy hole in the great hall through which the lord could eavesdrop on his guests! Just to the south of Glasgow on a bend in the Clyde is Bothwell, the largest and finest 13th century castle in Scotland. Equally fine is the superb Brodick Castle on Arran with its entrancing gardens. The small castle of Portencross sits on a rocky point near West Kilbride – almost as close to the sea as it would be possible to build. On the north-west corner of Arran, also close to the shore, is the particularly fine Lochranza Castle. Parts of it are thought to date from the early 1300s.

Rock Art & Stone Circles A hotspot for prehistoric rock carvings, Dumfries and Galloway has many stones carved with strange cup and ring markings. A good local site for cup and ring marked rocks is at Dumtroddan just to the east of Port William. You’ll find almost identical Bronze Age carvings in England, France, Spain and even Italy. The west coast of Arran is the place to go for some of Scotland’s most outstanding stone circles. The 4000 year old Auchagallon Cairn is surrounded by an almost complete circle of 15 standing stones. Even more impressive is the nearby Machrie Moor, an even earlier site with several stone circles. When excavated recently, it was found that there had previously been substantial timber circles here.

Sweetheart Abbey

Ancient Abbeys and Yorkshire Monks Built by monks some 800 years ago, Glenluce, Sweetheart and Dundrennan abbeys are wonderful places to visit. They would originally all have had an abbey church, cloisters, vaulted chapter house, refectory, dormitory and a warming room – the only room with a fire! You can still see some of these elements today. Glenluce, tucked into a tranquil valley near Stranraer, is one of Scotland’s best-preserved monasteries. A highlight is the magnificent chapter house, with its ornate windows and grotesque carvings. Sweetheart Abbey, just south of Dumfries, was named for its

founder, Lady Devorgilla, who was buried here with the embalmed heart of her beloved husband, John Balliol. You can see the stone effigy of Lady Devorgilla cradling her husband’s heart. Peaceful Dundrennan Abbey was, for some 400 years, the home of a community of Cistercian monks. The original monks came from Rievaulx Abbey in North Yorkshire. The abbey has a particularly fine chapter house where you’ll find the effigy of a murdered abbot with a dagger at his heart and a slaughtered assailant at his feet. Mary Queen of Scotland spent her last hours in Scotland here after the disastrous Battle of Langside in 1568. © Historic Environment Scotland

For over 130 years, archaeologists have excavated at Whithorn, in search of the earliest Church in Scotland, called “Candida Casa” by Bede. In so doing, they have found the famous Latinus stone, one of the earliest literate monuments in Scotland, unearthed examples of Celtic and Norse-in art, and evidence of wealth, foreign trade and royal connections. The Whithorn Trust is proud to be part of this tradition by continuing to champion archaeology and supporting live excavation. Our roundhouse is based on recent excavation and during 2023 we have sponsored research by leading academics, revealing the secrets of Whithorn’s mediaeval cemetery and earliest inhabitants. Known as Scotland’s most exotic garden, Logan Botanic Garden is located near Stranraer on the south-western tip of Scotland. Warmed by the Gulf Stream, the Garden enjoys an almost subtropical climate, enabling plants from Australia, New Zealand, South and Central America and Southern Africa to thrive outdoors. The long driveway to the Garden’s entrance is lined with magnificent Cordyline palms, the first sign that visitors will soon be entering a gardener’s paradise. In the South Woodland, striking plantings of palms and tree ferns from Australia and New Zealand give the sense of walking through an antipodean forest. Make sure you visit the Tasmanian Creek, with its dense planting of eucalyptus and new four metre high Dicksonia antarctica tree ferns – recently transplanted from the Edinburgh Glasshouses. Other highlights in the Garden include plants from Chile such as the colourful Fasciculara bicolor, a member of the pineapple family, and the beautiful Argentinian shrub Polylepsis australis, with its distinctive flaking, reddish-brown papery bark.

Also unmissable is the giant, rhubarb-like Gunnera manicata, a native of south-east Brazil. In spring, the plant develops large cone-shaped flower spikes covered in thousands of tiny greenish flowers. This is followed by the growth of an enormous canopy of barbed leaves up to 2.5 metres across, raised on stalks up to three metres high. In summer, the Gunnera Bog becomes a virtually impenetrable forest with around 50 different species of Gunnera. Other highlights include the Walled Garden, a showcase for exotic plants and the Victorian-style Logan Conservatory. This elegant glasshouse is home to a range of particularly tender plants from South Africa. Logan Botanic Garden became a Regional Garden of RBGE in 1969. Tickets to the Garden currently cost £8 (including a small voluntary donation to the Garden) and it is open daily from March – November (and weekends in February). www.rbge.org.uk/visit/logan-botanic-garden The beautiful Glenwhan Gardens is situated high above Luce Bay looking out to the Mull of Galloway and the Isle of Man. T

he South West of Scotland covers a wide area, from Dumfries and Galloway, to Ayrshire and Arran, as well as Greater Glasgow. This whole area is a fantastic destination with a host of picturesque towns and villages, impressive rivers, lochs, and woodlands, and is just brimming with culture and heritage. Glasgow has two major train stations, with Glasgow Central Station linking to the south, with trains across the region to the ferry terminals at Gourock, Wemyss Bay, Largs, Ardrossan and Stranraer, as well as connecting major towns such as Paisley, Kilmarnock, Ayr and Dumfries - all serviced by regular daily trains. There are also excellent local bus services connecting all the towns and villages. If you are on two wheels there are plenty of options, with many off-road cycle trails, cycle friendly roads and three national cycle routes.

• Mostly Ghostly

For a special experience, drive the South West Coastal 300 scenic route. The SWC300 features fabulous coastlines, including two lowland peninsulas, and several traditional seaside hotspots of Ayrshire. Inland, the route winds through delightful rolling countryside, edges atmospheric forests and crosses dramatic moorlands. A wonderful self-guided experience not to be missed! It can be great though to rely on the services of a knowledgeable and charimatic local expert. You’ll discover a wide range of tours available with boat trips to some of the islands or take a guided tour along Galloway’s picturesque coastline. Experience a spooky ghost tour with Mostly Ghostly. Have a dark sky ranger help you explore the night sky in Galloway Forest Park. Or take in the great outdoors on a walking tour, find the best spots to eat on the Isle of Arran on a food trail, or follow the music scene in Glasgow.

DID you know? Crawick Multiverse’s major landscape restoration project has transformed a former open cast coal mine into a remarkable place of natural and cosmic beauty. Inspired by the wonders of the universe.

hisky lover or total newbie everyone should visit a distillery for a genuine centuries old experience.

Born out of the island’s heritage of the illicit production of ‘Arran Waters’ Lagg is a single malt distillery producing a heavily peated style of whisky. Book ahead to enjoy a virtual tour of the distillery’s past and explore the magnificent new visitor centre & shop. Each visitor will receive a souvenir glass and there’s a takeaway ‘Driver’s Dram’ for that responsible party member. Alternatively, why not leave the driving to someone else and take a Mogabout Tour to both Lagg and Lochranza Distilleries? Lochranza is an award-winning attraction in the north of the island, where you will enjoy a personal welcome to the distillery and you can sample fine local produce in the café. Over in Dumfries & Galloway you’ll find Annandale Distillery, established in 1836, Annandale was originally one of Scotland’s oldest operating distilleries. Further south is Bladnoch Distillery, the most southerly whisky distillery in Scotland. Malt whisky distilleries offer a variety of behind-the-scenes tours. Here you’ll experience the processes that have to be gone through before a grain of barley is converted into a drop of malt whisky. Most distilleries have shops where you can buy a range of their single malts of varying ages.

Gins & Breweries Gin has grown in popularity over the last few years, with many new craft gins popping up. Dark Art Distillery in Kirkcudbright welcome guests so they can learn more about the distillery and the history of gin, as well as learning about the stardust magic that goes into the gin. You will also meet the beautiful custom-built still, Peggy.

ith interesting museums and galleries across the South West of Scotland, there’s plenty of history to unravel, natural history to lap up and artistic talent to admire.

Collections relating to local history are to be found throughout the area. You can dip into the extensive exhibits at the region’s largest museum in Dumfries and, for an entirely different perspective, you should visit the Camera Obscura. For admirers of the Bard, the Robert Burns Centre is a ‘must see’ destination. For something novel, the Creetown Gem Rock Museum is hard to beat. You will be fascinated by the crystal cave and be in awe at the fossils in the world class exhibits. For a unique experience consider visiting The Devil’s Porridge, which tells the incredible story of the greatest WW1 munitions factory ever and the lives of the ‘munitions girls’ who worked there. If you are seeking that extra adrenalin buzz, South West Scotland boasts a great selection of trails where you can mountain bike to your heart’s content. There are also some excellent horse riding centres offering trekking and hacking for all abilities. Other activities include Segway tours, archery, clay pigeon shooting, sailing, windsurfing, paddle boarding and kayaking. For even more of a buzz try the longest zip wire in the UK, water balling or the human sling shot! For a more relaxed stay, why not visit one of the many delightful beaches within easy reach, shallow and more sheltered on the Solway coast, wilder and more exposed on the west coast of the Rhins. At Prestwick beach the children can find entertainment at Kidz Play.

As well as all of this, South west Scotland has many golf courses, ranging from a major championship course to family friendly 9 hole venues. On the coast is the scenic Ailsa course at Turnberry, with its lighthouse and great views. Equally famous is Royal Troon, with its ‘Postage Stamp’ 8th hole - the shortest on the Open circuit. Or try Rowallan golf course, set in the grounds of two castles and designed by professional golfer Colin Montgomerie. There are dozens of hidden treasures away from the busy fairways of the coast. Among these are Ballochmyle, Loudoun and Brunston Castle. Annanhill, close to Kilmarnock, is a delightful parkland course with wide tree-lined fairways. The Isles of Arran and Great Cumbrae have some superb courses too.

PAROLE CERTIFICATE FIND ALL THE STAMPS TO Get out of jail! On entry all children are given a Parole Certificate. Inveraray is the perfect place for day visits, short breaks and family holidays. This unique ‘new town’ was constructed in 1745 on the site of an old fishing village where Loch Fyne meets Loch Shira. The Georgian architecture, white painted buildings and picturesque setting make the Royal Burgh of Inveraray a jewel in the crown of Argyll’s landscape. The iconic Inveraray Castle, ancestral home of the Duke of Argyll, Chief of the Clan Campbell, is a must-see visitor attraction. Today, the bustling town boasts a number of independent shops selling locally-made crafts and souvenirs. The area, renowned for its local seafood, has a range of great places to eat and drink and a well-deserved reputation for offering top class hospitality.
