OASE WATER TECHNOLOGY

When even golfers love the lakes, it’s thanks to OASE. Lakes and water obstacles are attractive elements on every golf course. But maintaining their beauty isn’t easy. In stagnant waters too little oxygen reaches the deeper water. And warmer temperatures are conducive to unwanted algae growth. This all leads to increasing putrefactions. The consequence: unpleasant odours and sludge make the entire golf course less attractive. Explore now the effective, sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions of OASE Lake Therapy. SchlixX · Removes foul odours · Binds phosphate · Released oxygen stimulates existing micro-organisms

SchlixX Plus · Removes sludge · Binds phosphate · Released oxygen stimulates existing micro-organisms · Additionally contains selected aquatic micro-organisms that “eat up” sludge

DUBAI SOUTH PROPERTIES ANNOUNCES LAUNCH OF SOUTH BAY The project comprises over 800 villas and townhouses and more than 200 mansions Dubai South Properties announced the launch of South Bay, a new master development in the heart of The Residential District at Dubai South. The new project will be home to over 800 villas and townhouses and more than 200 waterfront mansions. It will also feature a 1-kilometre long crystal lagoon, more than 3 kilometres of a waterfront promenade, and multiple beaches for swimming. Townhouses and villas at South Bay will be spread across a built-up area ranging from approximately 2,900 to 4,800 square feet in a mix of three-, four-, and five-bedroom townhouses and semi-detached villas, whereas the mansions, which will all be on the waterfront, will feature five-, six-, and seven-bedroom standalone villas with a maximum built-up area of around 13,000 square feet. The project is located strategically on Expo Road and hosts several world-class amenities, such as a community shopping mall, a fitness complex, kids’ clubs, swimming pools, a water sports club, waterfront cafés, a pet park, and a lake park, to name a few.

6

A spokesman from Dubai South Properties said: “The launch of South Bay comes in light of our successful sellout of all the residential projects we had launched over the past few years. With the Expo site now transforming into Expo City Dubai by October and based on the huge demand for premium properties in the area, this project will be an ideal option for those seeking quality living with world-class amenities at competitive prices. At Dubai South, we are always aligned with the government’s mission of making Dubai the best place to live, work and visit.” Other amenities in The Residential District include a school in the near future, public parks, sports courts, retail shops, a hypermarket (opening in October), a mosque, a petrol station, and a public bus route connecting The Residential District to the Expo Metro station. South Bay’s sales will launch in September, and customers may register their interest now. More information on the project will be announced in due time.

Smart City Saudi Arabia launches latest future city with sustainable living at its core ALNAMA Smart City is planned to become a zero-carbon destination. The city will promote sustainable living in a 10 square kilometer community with various hubs, including residential, educational, commercial, tourism and medical. Derived from the Arabic word “thrive”, Riyadh’s smart city is planned to provide 11,000 residential units for a population of 44,000 people. The 1,000-hectare development will create 10,000 jobs in various sectors including green-tech industries to create a green circular economy for the city. The project is masterminded by URB, the Dubai based Landscape architecture and design firm specialising in developing sustainable cities with a view to accelerate the world’s transition towards net zero developments. Various hubs will transform the city into a unique destination as well as an attraction for Eco tourists and medical tourists. The green-tech hub will provide an innovative ecosystem for urban-tech companies related to food, energy, water, waste, mobility and building materials.

CEO of URB, Baharash Bagherian, who has masterminded the designs of various sustainable cities in the region, including The Sustainable City in Yiti, The Sustainable City Yas Island and Nexgen Sustainable City, describes ALNAMA as the next evolution in smart cities: “ALNAMA aims to be the next generation of a selfsufficient city, producing all the city’s renewable energy needs, as well as the resident’s caloric food intake on site. Biosaline agriculture, productive gardens, Wadi’s and carbon-rich habitats are key features of the development’s innovative and resilient landscape design. The city was planned through the design of its landscape, rather than its buildings. This creates an urbanism that is more socially inclusive, more economically valuable, and more sensitive to the environment.” Eco-friendly glamping lodges, eco resorts as well as a nature conservation centre are key components of the hospitality hub, which will promote ecotourism. An autism village, wellness centre and clinics within the medical hub will promote medical tourism. Ultimately the city will become a work, live and visit destination where people, planet and profit can thrive in harmony. It will become a new benchmark model for all future cities to be planned to promote greener economies that center around food, water, energy and waste.”

100Architects partners with INFYA Famed Street Architecture and Urban Intervention Firm, 100Architects, agree an exclusive middle-east partnership with Emirati owned Architectural Build and Design Powerhouse INFYA. Having delivered hundreds of projects across the world and having been recognized an array of times by leading architects and thought-leaders for its unique style and ability to create impact, 100Architects believes that working in the public realm is a privilege and that the Middle-East is the new playground. Founded in 2013 by Marcial Jesus and based in Shanghai, 100Architects is currently led by three Architectural design partners: Javier Gonzalez (Spain), Matias Hernandez (Chile), Marcial Jesus (Chile) who collectively work from the mantra that “Play is not only for kids: The city of the future will be a playground for kids and adults alike.”

8

“At 100architects, the team designs playscapes for the city; urban spaces where the cityscape merges with the play area and engages with it creating spaces where the boundaries between the playscape and the rest of the cityscape is not clearly limited. Play is not only for kids as they city becomes everybody’s playground. In addition, the colours and shapes chosen for all our projects create vibrant environments and instill a sense of joy, attracting people to engage in all sorts of activities. As a result, performing activities in such environments allows people’s dopamine levels to increase, enhancing creative thinking skills. At the

same time, the colours and shapes tap on people’s imagination, another factor that paves the way for creative thinking development,” explained Jesus. INFYAs role and reach. The partnership with INFYA provides immediate onground, in-person world-class delivery, local knowledge and finishing. Now into the 5th joint project together, it’s clear having such partnerships work for both organisations, clients and the cities they are designing and building together. INFYA the Architectural build and design arm of the Alsayegh group of companies, with offices in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh & Cairo, was founded by Emirati businessman and Chairman Abdullatif Alsayegh and headed up by Group CEO Alex Bendiouis (British). It consists of Alsayegh Events (a mega-scale public event company), Alsayegh Media a 2-decadelong Media Powerhouse) and INFYA (an architectural, build, fit-out and construction company that is run by Managing Director Jean Oosthuizen (South African). Being established in the middle east and having delivered some of the biggest projects in all the prementioned verticals, the team was noticing that the desire for “something never seen before” was growing day by day. The need for clients and governments developers to stand out in a region that is known for giga projects has never been higher. However, that need is becoming more and more essential for it to be routed in projects that add to the value of life and add to the goals of making cities and places to live in the middle east a life choice rather than work driven choice.

Why Now? “Just look around us. It’s all happening,” he quipped before listing all of the reasons why he’s excited to begin working in the region. “The Dubai Urban Master Plan 2040, that draws inspiration from international best practices to create conditions for sustainable prosperity and create a more inclusive environment that meets the needs of the city’s diverse population and enables people to realise their creative and innovative potential to the max. “The massive push that Sharjah-based private or government owned entities like the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq) in mega projects across the emirate such as the ongoing Khor Fakkan rejuvenation is another testimony to overall mindset shift in making the middle east cities a new playground. “And for Saudi, it doesn’t take much to notice the huge development drive with new cities like the giga project of Neom or the Red Sea development programme.” Jesus continued: “As the Middle East construction industry navigates its post-pandemic recovery, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) is being crowned as the region’s leading construction market due to several factors such as data trends, growing investor interest, and the country’s long-term commitment to bolstering construction efforts.” According to data from Trade Arabia, the Saudi construction market is forecasted to perform well in 2022 as its initial value was already at 37 billion USD only two years prior. Given that the sector also registered an estimated CAGR of 5.2% for the period 2021 to 2026, the Saudi Arabian construction industry is exhibiting promising potential. Urban regeneration approach By 2050, 2/3 of the world’s population will be living in cities, so through our projects, we seek to enhance the sense of community to get people to love and respect their immediate environments and public spaces, as a small contribution towards getting to love and respect the Earth and achieve a swift from degradation to regeneration. Regenerative development is not developing more buildings but developing new potentials, through education and the enhancement of empathy, wellbeing and the improvement of health in urban environments.

PLEAS TO FREE UP CITY SPACE FOR MORE NATURE

AS SINGAPORE’S GARDENS BY THE BAY MARKS 10 YEARS THIS MONTH, THE LEAD DESIGNER CAMPAIGNS FOR MORE NATURE AND BIODIVERSITY WITHIN CITIES.

The landscape architect behind Singapore’s iconic Supertrees and the current Tower of London Superbloom display in honour of the Queen’s platinum jubilee is calling for more city spaces to be turned over to nature in order to boost biodiversity, tourism and wellbeing. As a globally-recognised tourist attraction Gardens by the Bay celebrates its 10th anniversary this month in Singapore, Andrew Grant RDI, founder of landscape architecture practice Grant Associates and lead designer on the world-renowned project, believes that it is more important than ever before for biodiversityrich green spaces to be intentionally cultivated in order to combat the climate emergency: “Gardens by the Bay demonstrates the possibility of using landscapes, plants and nature to create powerful places where people can come together and be inspired. The whole project’s approach to integrated planning and design serves to signify Singapore as

10

the City in a Garden; Gardens by the Bay is the perfect fusion of nature, technology and art and its legacy and impact is sizeable ten years on. Its success shows how, as landscape architects, we can positively influence and transform cityscapes into areas that add more value to people and planet, supporting human wellbeing and fuelling urban biodiversity.” Grant was the lead designer on the project, and was subsequently awarded the title of RDI Royal Designer for Industry in recognition of his global work. Now a founding member of the UK Landscape Architects Declare, a movement for landscape architects around the world to act in response to the climate breakdown and biodiversity collapse, his environmentally-focused work has now extended into the Tower of London Superbloom project, the biggest transformation to the Tower of London’s historic moat in 150 years.

The First Specialised Landscape Magazine in the Middle East

Based in both Bath, UK and Singapore, Grant Associates led a competition-winning team in 2006 for Gardens by the Bay to design the 54 hectares (130 acres) of £500m Bay South Garden in Singapore, the first and largest of the three gardens at Gardens by the Bay, for NParks. The first phase of this dramatic project opened to the public on 29th June, 2012. Since opening, millions of visitors have been wowed annually by the attraction, in particular by 18 visually stunning ‘Supertrees’ - measuring between 25 and 50 metres high - which serve as vertical gardens displaying tropical flowering climbers, epiphytes and ferns. At night, these canopies come alive with lighting and projected media, with an aerial suspended walkway offering visitors a truly unique perspective on the gardens. “Gardens by the Bay is a landscape spectacle based on plant diversity and which provides visitors with a first-hand appreciation of so many aspects of the natural world that are becoming endangered as our planet continues to be placed under such huge pressure. Our brief as a design team from day one was to deliver a one-of-a-kind botanic garden offering visitors from Singapore and around the world the chance to experience plants and natural habitats that they wouldn’t otherwise get to experience, both outside and within giant biomes.” explained Mr. Grant. One of the largest garden projects in the world, the Bay South Garden masterplan took inspiration from Singapore’s national flower, the orchid, expressing the beauty of these flowers through the exotic gardens and the physiology of the orchid through the sophisticated

infrastructure for managing energy, water and waste. The nature-focused attraction has won numerous coveted awards since opening, including being named ‘Best Large Scale Public Development’ by the Landscape Institute Awards, the RIBA Lubetkin Prize for ‘Best New International Building’ and ‘Building Project of the Year’ at the 2012 World Architecture Festival. Incorporating cutting edge environmental design and sustainable development principles, Gardens by the Bay is an integral part of Singapore’s ‘City in a Garden’ biodiversity model. Since opening in 2012, more than 50 million visits have been made to Gardens by the Bay, with close to 6.6 million visitors in 2020 alone as the attraction continued to provide horticultural inspiration and valuable access to green spaces throughout the pandemic. The world-recognised landscape attraction has featured in numerous films and television series since opening, including being profiled on the BBC’s Planet Earth II documentary series with Sir David Attenborough where it was described as “perhaps the most spectacular example of city greening.” Alongside lead designers Grant Associates, the British design team for Bay South comprised of Wilkinson Eyre (architects); Atelier Ten (environmental design consultants); Atelier One (structural engineers); Land Design Studio (museum and visitor center designers) and Thomas Matthews (communication designers). Founded in 1997, Grant Associates celebrates 25 years of delivering environmentallyfocused landscape projects internationally this year.

A multi-sensory art experience that will be a ‘home for infinite curiosity’, featuring original and constantly transforming artistic installations unique to Abu Dhabi has been developed by teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi. It is set to be an immersive, inspirational space where the intersection of art and technology will ignite curiosity, imagination and creativity in all who visit. Slated to be completed in 2024, it is the latest offering of the Saadiyat Cultural District. The 17,000sqm (GFA) teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi building has been conceived with unparalleled installations that will be unique to Abu Dhabi, created through an extensive experimentation process. The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) has partnered with Miral, the emirate’s leading creator of destinations and

experiences, to develop the concept, architecture and facilities, alongside teamLab, the globally acclaimed, interdisciplinary Tokyo-based art collective, known for their unique artistic vision. Visitors will be invited to open their minds and embark on a journey through teamLab’s new concept of Environmental Phenomena, which offers a new perspective on the world around us. The featured artworks are created and shaped by the environment which produces the various phenomena. The adapted and unique architecture, conceptualised by teamLab and realised by Abu Dhabi-based MZ Architects, plays an important role in providing the artworks with an environment to evolve freely and organically, as if they were life-forms themselves. The experience will be unique to each visitor, changing with each visit, as

they discover a place in which to endlessly explore and transcend the limits of their imagination. Having created art that is part of the collection of global institutions such as the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles and the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney, amongst many others, teamLab’s artists, programmers, engineers, CG animators, mathematicians and architects are creating an original concept and unique teamlab Phenomena Abu Dhabi experience for the UAE capital. HE Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, said: “Curiosity and imagination are at the core of who we are as human beings, sparking all our discoveries, inventions and innovations through the millennia. Sitting at the intersection of art, technology, nature and high tech fantasy, teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi will offer a world of boundless wonder and creativity to all who visit, encouraging the new perspectives that are so essential to a thriving future.” Toshiyuki Inoko, Founder of teamLab, said: “teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi is based on

teamLab’s new concept in which the existence of the artworks is created by the phenomena produced by their environment. The artworks in teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi do not exist independently but are created by the environment which produces the various phenomena, stabilising their structure. Objects like stones and man-made creations maintain a stable structure on their own. Unlike these, the existence of the artworks in teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi are dependent on their environment. The environment produces phenomena and stabilizes their structure - these stabilized phenomena are what create the existence of the artworks.” “Environmental phenomena are released from the material substances that have been responsible for maintaining structures of existence. Elements like air, water, and light that permeate our daily lives are transformed by their environment into unique phenomena that become works of art. The boundaries of their existence are ambiguous and continuous. Even if people destroy the work, the work will remain in

existence as long as its environment is maintained. On the contrary, the work will disappear if the environment is not maintained. In time, people’s consciousness will expand from existence itself to the environment. A stone can continue to exist in a closed box, sealed off from the outside world, but life cannot sustain its existence in such a box because it is created by its environment. Life is a miraculous phenomenon that emerges from a flow in a continuous world.” To celebrate the official launch of the project, DCT Abu Dhabi has also announced a preview activation for visitors to experience immersive artworks that embody the concept of ‘infinite curiosity’ ahead of the opening, taking them on a journey of wonder and sensory exploration.

I INTERVIEW

Introducing studioCREATE

Henry Duck, Daniel Lawton and Eugen Hillermann established SCLA In May 2022 with the studio based in Dubai World Trade Center. Henry Duck Daniel Lawton

Eugen Hillermann

studioCREATE is a startup Landscape Architect Studio with ambitious growth plans to dominate the GCC Market whilst having a lot of fun along the way.

16

What prompted you to form SCLA? Henry: There were various reasons behind SCLA being established. Myself and Dan had worked together for over eight years in Dubai and had always discussed the idea of setting something up. We had reached a stage in our careers where we both felt it was the right time to start something when we were introduced to Eugen through a mutual client who was interested in opening an independent Landscape Architecture Studio in Dubai. This led to discussions about setting up and the realisation that the three of us had the perfect mix of complementing skills to become a dynamic leadership team. Fast forward a few months, SCLA was established! The three of us, like everyone else, really felt the effects of the pandemic and we all strongly believe that Landscape Architecture as a profession, has never been under the spotlight like it is at the moment. Following

The First Specialised Landscape Magazine in the Middle East

SCLA put an immense value on creating meaningful connections with our external environments.

the return to something near normality, we feel that people value and understand their relationship with the external environment more than ever. In essence, SCLA has been established by a group of passionate likeminded designers who following the pandemic, feel it’s the perfect time to inject some fresh energy into the Middle East design scene and shake things up a little. How have your previous professional backgrounds helped to define SCLA as a brand? Eugen: One of the many things in common between our leadership team is the similarity between our backgrounds. The three of us have backgrounds where landscape has had a fundamental presence in our early life experiences and ultimately guided us to a career in this wonderful industry we work in today. We feel the similarities with our backgrounds has created a strong set of shared values within our leadership team which will ultimately help to create a unique culture and inform the growth within the studio. It was really important for us that we had a defined set of values, almost a purpose of why we established SCLA rather than just being a landscape design firm to do landscape design.

What would you like SCLA to be renowned for? Daniel: We have a very clear vision and direction of how we intend to operate as a studio and I think its fair to say that we don’t intend to have a specific signature or style. The main goal for us is to ensure that we have fun on every project and that doesn’t mean just us, it includes our clients and other consultants as we want to deliver world class design work in the most collaborative and enjoyable way possible. We want to be known as a creative, enthusiastic, fun and forward-thinking design studio who are not afraid to take risks. The pandemic majorly restricted access to our surrounding environments for a prolonged period of time. SCLA’s aim is to restore people’s connections with landscape through exceptional design.

17

I INTERVIEW

we live, work and play. It’s our intent and mission to establish a vibrant, fun and creative workplace that can switch to “remote mode” as and when required to allow people the chance to work in different environments. Why spend the summer stuck in the Dubai dust when you could be designing from the Tuscan countryside or a beach villa in Thailand.

Fun, one of our key values as a studio! We want projects to be as fun for us to design as they are for people to use.

What type of projects will SCLA work on? Henry: Like many designers here, we have an eye on KSA as the three of us have worked extensively throughout the country within the last eighteen months and see the Saudi market as a strong source of revenue. In addition to this, the reality is that most of the exciting and unique projects in the GCC region are happening over there. I think there is the strong likelihood that hospitality projects will become a key part of our portfolio moving forward as hotels provide the opportunity to do something unique from a design and guest experience point of view, whilst collaborating with both the Master Developer and Hotel Operator, something which is always a challenge. What will set SCLA apart from other landscape design companies in Dubai? Eugen: There are two ways that we hope to stand out and get noticed in the market as a start-up Landscape Architecture studio. Our main goal of course is design focused, we want to grow and foster a reputation as a creative design firm who are “out of the box” thinkers but also easy people to work with, something which unfortunately clients and consultants can lose sight of at times in this region and we genuinely believe this demotivates a design team and can kill any chance of a project being successful. We feel that many design firms (not just landscape) will unfortunately slip back into old habits and routines following the pandemic. For us, the pandemic really was a complete re-set and a chance to re-evaluate how

18

You’re only a few months in but what have the major challenges been in establishing SCLA? Daniel: As expected, there have been one or two challenges during our establishment phase but to be honest, we feel the major challenges lie ahead rather than behind us. As we are backed by an established lead consultancy firm in Dubai, we have been very fortunate in having a huge amount of support during our establishment phase which has removed a lot of the stress normally associated with setting up a design studio. One challenge has been in relation to BIM, the three of us came from studios which had very strong internal BIM systems. One of the main points of focus during the start-up phase was to define our BIM systems and set up our digital design capabilities, this was definitely a challenge and very time consuming. We feel the major challenge ahead will be delivering largescale complex projects whilst being able to grow the team in a sustainable and organic way. We set high standards in our previous companies so clients will be expecting the same if not better from SCLA! What’s the plan for SCLA over the next twelve months? Henry: We have a very clear growth strategy in place for the next twelve months and we feel it’s essential we grow the studio in an organic and sustainable way which does not compromise our ability to provide high quality services and design work for our clients. At the same time, I have always been a very ambitious and enthusiastic person and I would be lying if I said part of me wasn’t thinking about growing quickly and growing big!!! Our leadership team is very well established in the region and we feel there is a genuine opportunity to create something that can be a huge success which is only a good thing for this unique city and country we all call home.

On the podium, the palms are planted with an ornamental understorey of shrubs and ground covers such as Zamia furfuracea, Hymenocallis littoralis and Sansevieria trifasciata ‘Golden Hahnii’. Luxury looking

trees such as Olea europaea, Plumeria obtuse and Guaiacum officinale are also provided to complete the health and wellness softscape design ideas. As part of sustainable design approaches, an automatic irrigation system has been applied to the soft landscape areas. Accordingly, technical design has been detailed during the design stages in coordination with architects, structure, and MEP engineers to complete the project.

I SUSTAINABLE HOUSE

By: NGS Architects

How to build a sustainable home on a budget

A House with a Difference 24

The First Specialised Landscape Magazine in the Middle East

The UAE is one of the fastest paced countries in the world today thanks to its booming construction industry which is one of the greatest contributions to economic growth in the country. However, an unfortunate downside is the industry produces a substantial amount of waste product as a result of its high turnover; but it doesn’t have to be that way! NGS has always prided itself on its approach towards sustainability— evident in all completed design and build projects to date. Since the inception of NGS in the UAE almost 13 years ago, it has been a dream to create a sustainable house using recyclable materials. NGS was approached in the beginning of 2022 by an Emirati family in search of an Architect who could build their dream sustainable

25

I SUSTAINABLE HOUSE home after being inspired by Expo 2020 and the Ruler of Dubai; His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid and the Dubai government initiatives towards sustainable development. Ultimately, it’s their hope to inspire future Emirati families to consider this route when constructing a home. The family wanted to make use of limited funding/space to create a home that was not only unique but also made a difference in its contribution to the economy and environment; possibly setting an impactful example for future homes to come. The brief consisted of a need to pull away from a generic home design, instead the family wanted a unique space encompassing their culture and sustainability. After the initial brief consultation, our founder and Principal Design Architect Nabil Sherif agreed to take on this incredible challenge and opportunity. Owning a wealth of experience in different types of residential homes and towers, the idea of creating the first sustainable home for an Emirati family in the UAE was beyond exciting. Nabil believes Sustainable Architecture is all about the footprint you leave on this planet; achieved through conscious decisions such as timeframe of design, materials used for the design, how the building sustains itself through its life span, and the afterlife of the building in its surrounding environment.

The Family Pool Terrace with Sun Lounges and Broad Curving Steps Providing Access to the Oval Terrace

The First Specialised Landscape Magazine in the Middle East

It became clear, with the parameters set out by the client; that the best way to achieve this was to use as much recycled material as possible from ongoing projects and allocate the majority of the funding for the contracting element of the project. How was this achieved? Building sites all around the UAE have a certain percentage that is considered waste material from cuts offs of materials delivered to site to onsite samples that go to waste whether it be wood/plastic/block work/lighting/aluminum/glass etc. This waste is left on sites in high volumes to be delivered to waste sites or recycling plants, which we feel isn’t the best way for both the economy and environment. The idea is to reduce the wastage and maximizing their use by recycling them, and create a home built on sustainable standards harnessing historical architectural elements in order to enhance the overall living experience in a modern way. Elements such as air flow, Lighting, sun pattern, and shape were all considered and analyzed carefully in order to combine both the client’s brief as well as the project design set out by our team. The family wanted a home that catered to privacy, a communal corridor that connected rooms but didn’t take from the BUA (Built Up Area), a courtyard that could flood light to the center rooms, a prayer room for worship and reflection, and finally for it to be all on one level for easy access, and efficiency of movement and communication. The land is approx. 7k Sqft made up of three main pods (allowing for a BUA of 3k Sqft), the garage, the main house, and the prayer room. The perimeter to the main structure is offset by a ‘Falaj’ set in the landscape to evenly distribute continuous flowing water to the plants and trees around the Oasis that encompasses the architecture of the site. The center/courtyard of the house is celebrated with water and a pool that symbolizes purity and fertility for the land. The roof that spans across all the closed rooms houses the graters that cut and allows natural sunlight to enter the rooms during the solar pattern of the day. In parallel the openings will act as arched wind towers to

27

I SUSTAINABLE HOUSE

allow the house to become a self-regulating thermal system that sustains itself throughout the year. Overall the house will be powered using solar energy and any excess energy will be redistributed to earn money from the local power grid, and lastly there will be an underground grey water system that will function to re-use waste/ rain water for landscaping and toilets. The Greater House is a harmonious place that radiates light through its unique earthy tones cultivated with tradition, function and refinement. It is a house that is greater for humanity, our planet, and finally a lesson to how we all need to approach any project that will have an impact in the world we live in.

I LIFESTYLE

A glamorous pool house in Mont-Liban, Lebanon

By: Wael Farran Studio Located in South of Lebanon, Senses is a pool house that was conceived and built as an extension to an existing residence. Therefore, the project is a beautiful exercise in fusion, where interior, exterior and landscape unite to create one holistic lifestyle canvas that speaks of design excellence.

30

The First Specialised Landscape Magazine in the Middle East

The aim was to create a hidden zone interrelated to the villa, yet isolated enough to respect the family’s privacy. Over a year and a half, the 3000m2 olive grove was transformed into the perfect spot to receive guests, party or relax. The pool house includes a big family room, a gymnasium, a bedroom, two bathrooms, a hairdressing area, outdoor showers, a service kitchen changing rooms, and sink zones. A pool house is not complete without a pool, and Senses boasts not one, but two pools as well as a Jacuzzi.

Olive groves in Lebanon are characterized by their various levels for optimal use of the land. While the olive trees were carefully transferred into a different area, the levels in the land were used to build a Jacuzzi overflowing into an infinity pool that merges with the horizon and ends with an 8m waterfall pouring into a smaller pool on the lower level. The area also includes a swimming pool for kids. Two modern Gazebo sculptures enhance the connection with nature and add a subtle grip on the open spaces. The space’s zen feel during the day turns more mystical at night with the strategically placed lighting all over the area. With lights from the sides rather than the top, the gazebos offer a unique spaceship feel enhancing the mystique. The outdoor area is equipped with showers of different heights reminiscent of the level nature of the project with a waterfall like flow when turned on, for a pleasurable after swim experience, as well as a sink and bathroom area for guests. Choice of material was made with meticulous attention: because it goes well with the Bisazza mosaic tiles of the pools, Indian limestone was the dominant material for the facades. To emphasize

the project’s open-air nature, the ceiling was combined with the upper zone garden, while the dividing walls of the interior space were built in a way to maximize visibility of the whole area from inside creating an outside experience. The interior of the pool house is uniquely divided giving a flow in the space for additional

32

comfort and privacy. Sliding massif wood doors allow smooth movement from one area to the other, adding the nature element to the indoor space. Hues of greens and blue bring the outside in, while the custom-made furniture marries comfort with style. The bedroom has its own private access to the garden as well as an en-

suite bathroom made of marble and mosaics similar to the outdoor bathrooms. “The idea was to blend the indoor into the outdoor in form and feel. Through that unique blend, Senses speaks to the heart and the soul” explained Wael Farran, founder and lead designer of Wael Farran Studio. It is almost impossible not to be seduced by this fanciful flight of the imagination … discerning taste, a critical eye for detail and the gracious architect’s manipulation of space make this pool house a pleasure for the eyes, inside and out. I IRRIGATION

Why Irrigation Audits are so important An Irrigation review prior to works beginning could save millions in the future By: Asif Iqbal Irrigation Specialist

So we followed the specifications, standards and regulations. Add to it the manufacturer’s recommendations. The irrigation engineer gives his two cents – sometimes much more. The consultant puts in their comments and coordination with the rest of the services and disciplines – to produce the final design for execution. I know I simplified it; ride with me here.

34

A couple of years down the line, the softscape starts to deteriorate. The facility management starts breathing down the maintenance team’s necks. Anxiety starts building up – the maintenance team starts to overwater the softscape. Next, they over-fertilise the softscape. One thing leads to another and the maintenance team start creating unnessary work for themselves.

The First Specialised Landscape Magazine in the Middle East

They hire more and more workers; easily done when a cheap workforce is easily available! Furthermore, labour-derived ‘fixes’ are prioritised. A single engineer overlooking multiple small maintenance sites or a single large community quickly spreads thin. Soon the maintenance team starts running out of budget to add more resources and start symptomatic treatments. Focus turns to the most viewed and visited areas, and the back ends are neglected and then forgotten. Add to it the pressures to reduce the TSE water consumption. This is what an irrigation designer that audits gets a telescopic view retrospectively. Design executed 10 to 20 years ago and, in some instances, even longer. A valve or a pull box next to a rollover kerb crushed by a car parked momentarily to attend a harmless call. A tree planted near a valve box, pipe or emission device succumbs to root ingress as the vegetation matures. What about the drip tube ends that are hard to reach and forgotten to be flushed on the maintenance team’s weekly run? These nuances escape us during the design phase and slip through the holes to land in the maintenance and facility management’s laps. These mistakes are multiplied and repeated many times over in an area of softscape that spans thousands of square meters. Practical design dictates that design

accommodates the maintenance team’s and possibly auditor’s inputs. A review today will save thousands for small sized sites and millions in large construction sites in maintenance, power, water and frustration.

I GAS STATION

NEW, MORE LANDSCAPERELATED KINDS OF GAS STATIONS The YPF gas station located in Nordelta, 30 kilometers north of the City of Buenos Aires, was built as the first of a series that would meet special needs of energy efficiency and would incorporate sustainable methods. As such, the architectural concept would be based on the creation of an icon, one that would be representative of both conceptual and constructive perspectives. YPF (Yacimientos Petroliferos Fiscales) is the national oil company of Argentina. In 2009, when it was still privatized and merged with the Spanish group Repsol, it called for a closed competition –with six renowned

36

Argentinean design offices involved– that would create this first environmentally friendly gas station in Argentina. The site was selected because of the landscape conditions: enclosed in a very green setting, at the entrance to the largest urbanized zone outside the capital city and on the route that connects with other important gated communities and neighborhoods in the North, the gas station is flanked by large groups of trees and a small lagoon. The wining project, designed by Hampton-Rivoira Arquitectos, took advantage of this situation and definitively created an icon, a sculptural element on the site, yet

The First Specialised Landscape Magazine in the Middle East

a subtle gesture that mingles with the landscape. When being asked about the building, Jorge Hampton states “The key is interpreting what the site says and, from there, link together the ideal conditions of functionality, beauty and sustainability.” On the land, the building appears barely visible when approaching from the road and once in the access area it becomes part of the green setting, the soft ascending curve of the roof fusing with the trees of the sidewalk. The highest point of the arch that makes the roof is 6 meters, a decision that responds to the need of having a height of at least 2 meters at the final segments of both sides of the curve, where the structure houses public services. On one side, the closest to the access road, are the car washing and repair facilities, together with some administration offices; at the opposite side of the curve, adjacent to one of the lagoons that make Nordelta, a large café and a terrace provide room for relaxing while waiting. The furniture was specially designed by Diana Cabeza, an architect specializing in urban furniture design. This arrangement –of a large central space where the car moves and two lateral areas with different services– refers to the original cultural landscape of the Delta, in northern Buenos Aires. The Delta del Tigre is mainly represented by the group of islands, small rivers and streams located at the mouth of the Parana River, when it flows into the Rio de la Plata, or River Plate. The historical loading and unloading structure for fruit motorboats (that transported the fruit to market on the mainland) was a simple roof underneath which laid the house at one side and a storage space at the other. Nordelta and the entire area around this urbanized zone, edged by the Lujan River, which also flows into the same delta and has many tributaries, are part of this cultural imagery. The idea of a simple roof, containing services and becoming part of the landscape is rooted into the history of the local riverside. From an energy efficiency and climatic design perspective, the building itself is designed as a green roof. This means, in principle, the incorporation of all positive aspects these structures offer: stormwater management,

reduction of winter heating costs, stormwater runoff, noise and air pollution and, in addition, increase of the green areas and provision of habitat for wildlife. The inclusion of systems of solar panels and stormwater collection is another aspect that helps to make this project sustainable. Stormwater runoff is collected on the roof and carried to an underground treatment cistern from where it is pumped up again to the green roof to be reused for irrigation. Additionally, stormwater collected in the drains located in the pump islands’ perimeter is reused for the first stage of the car washing process. Double glazing facades collaborate to mitigate heat loss and passive sun control techniques help to decrease solar heat gain, while saving a great deal of energy. Positioned following the north-south direction, the two longest sides of the building respectively face east and west receiving the most sun. The shading system, made of horizontal bars, was originally conceived as being of the same certified wood used in the glass windowpanes of the café and the outdoor wooden decks; however, in order to avoid maintenance costs, it was finally built with aluminum, thus matching the building’s main structure. Although the initial idea of building another seven gas stations with a similar ecological approach has not been put into practice yet, the one in Nordelta has became a symbol. This collective assessment responds not only to the appreciation of the sustainable methodologies implemented in the architectural layout but also, and for the most part, to the naturally established mimicry relationship between building and landscape. I RESTORATION

China’s high-tech hub happens to lie in one of its most scenic natural landscapes

Dongguan Songshan Lake Designed by Instinct Fabrication 38

The First Specialised Landscape Magazine in the Middle East

SITE CONTEXT AND HISTORY Dongguan Songshan Lake area is located in the south of Dongguan, close to Shenzhen Guangming District in China and not far from the Hong Kong border. The area is famed for its natural beauty with a giant lake, cycle paths and hiking trails all dotted along its landscape. However, somewhat surprisingly, amidst the nature trials and public park is one of China’s powerhouse industries; the high-tech Research and Development industry, companies such as HUAWEI have their headquarters here, as well as a number of large scientific research laboratories and colleges.

39

I RESTORATION

Originally designed a couple of decades ago, the area’s needs evolved over time and it no longer met the needs of the community as more residents, workers, and visitors settled along the perimeter of the lake. The linear site encompasses 42.5 acres, and prior to the redesign, it had a vehicular corridor running through the c enter, as well as fragmented sidewalks, dense vegetation, and segmented water features.

40

PROJECT GOALS – Restore natural elements and provide quality public space The design team prioritized the revitalization of the natural landscape and addressing current needs, while respecting the original design, culminating in the redefining of Songshan Lake into a popular community destination.

I RESTORATION Strategy 1 - Create open and secured vegetation system the first strategy was to protect the mature trees and selectively remove undesired plant growth to increase safety and provide a sufficient environment for new plantings and groundcover. Strategy 2 – Re-establish the water system and wildlife habitat The redevelopment focused on creating a resilient system to mitigate stormwater and natural hazards. A combination of bio-swales, permeable pathways and phytoremediation plantings complement each other’s goal to create a sustainable environment. Strategy 3 - Reconfigure space for recreation and leisure The south section of the site was once a vehicular dominated space void of programs. The design reconfigured the place into a diverse space that provides recreation and leisure opportunities with shade from the established canopy. Strategy 4 – Integrate a greenway system A 0.8-mile greenway comprised of jogging path and bike path weaves through the north section. It is part of a planned 75-mile greenway that will circulate around the district. It encourages a healthy lifestyle and connects to surrounding communities.
