The First Specialised Landscape Magazine in the Middle East

EDITOR’S NOTE Our cover story this month features the Jordanian city of Irbid, which has been hit hard with changing weather patterns in recent years resulting in overheating and high pollution levels. Written by students studying Landscape, urban design and planning at Jordan’s University of Science and Technology, the article focuses on one of the city’s “dying” neighbourhoods just north of Al-Hashimi Street. Read the student’s assessment of the area and how it can be regenerated to its former glory; becoming a place for people to congregate and enjoy leisurely strolls and family meals. We also meet BAU Brearley Architects and Urbanists to hear about their creative thought process behind their latest Chinese project, The Yuandang Pedestrian Bridge, a 586m bridge that is a hybrid structure incorporating landscape, infrastructure, and architecture. Staying with the theme of urban regeneration of neglected neighbourhoods. Another group of students from Abu Dhabi University, present their work entitled, ‘Reviving Abu Dhabi’s Al Nahyan District’. The urban redesign project is set to increase the connectivity of the somewhat isolated area, and improve circulation while creating a space for people from the neighborhood and outside of it to gather and socialize. As we bid farewell at the end of the month to one of Dubai’s greatest success stories, Expo 2020, we have a special tribute feature from the CEO of Tanseeq Group of companies, Mr Naser Ahmed, about his company’s key contributions to landscaping of the world fair. Enjoy the issue!

Al Wasl Plaza & Rove Hotel

Dubai has opened its doors to millions of tourists around the world by hosting the World Expo 2020 Dubai, the ongoing exhibition of the world’s largest recurring global convention showcasing representative pavilions from 191 participating countries. With the tagline ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’, Expo 2020 Dubai aims to inspire entrepreneurial initiatives, champion revolutionising cutting-edge technologies, and advocate intelligent and innovative sustainability practises. Replicating the theme set by the Burj Khalifia Park, the architecture of the Expo 2020 Dubai is inspired by the desert-rose: the primary framework of the convention consists of three petal shaped sections that emanate from the core of the Expo site, and are called ‘districts’, comprising the Sustainability, Mobility and Opportunity Districts. Occupying an outdoors space, “landscaping played a fundamental role in the design and construction of the Expo 2020 site,” says Mr. Naser Ahmed, CEO of Tanseeq Investment Group.

As a member of Tanseeq Investment Group, Proscape LLC (Dubai, UAE), one of the region’s leading landscape contracting companies,

successfully executed numerous projects for Expo 2020 Dubai. Proscape first executed the Mock-ups for the Thematic Districts of Sustainability and Mobility, awarded to the company in 2017. Two years later, in 2019, Proscape was awarded the complete landscaping works for the Sustainability and Mobility Districts, which were followed by several successive projects, including: the Conference and Exhibition Centre (CoEx) Campus; Al Wasl Plaza; Expo 2020 Public Realm; the UAE Pavilion; and several other nations pavilions. “Proscape successfully executed all projects in timely fashion and to the highest industry standard,” Mr Ahmed states. Tanseeq Investment Group companies Water In Motion LLC, Acacia LLC, Stones & Slates LLC, Timbertech LLC, Metaline LLC, Tanseeq LLC, Tanseeq Projects LLC, Uniflora LLC and Ventana LLC also directly contributed to the successful execution of the landscaping of Expo 2020 Dubai. “Furthermore, Proscape and her associate companies were supported by Transmech LLC in terms of logistical support, transportation of materials, labour, and supply of heavy equipment,” Mr Ahmed finishes.

Reviving Abu Dhabi’s Al Nahyan District By : Aya I Alkhatib, Heba Hejji, Maya Wacily, and Zeina Hamam Supervised by: Dr.Rim Meziani The goal set for this urban re-design project was to increase the connectivity of the surrounding area and improve circulation while creating a space for people from the neighborhood and outside of it to gather and socialize. Additionally, a survey was conducted to analyze the predominant population of the area and their needs to enhance the public space. The team concluded that one of the primary needs of the residents was the need for a sense of community.

With OASE ‚sea view‘ gets an exciting new dimension. I NEWS AND EVENTS

Qiddiya awards $750mn water park contract to ALEC Saudi-El Seif JV The Qiddiya Water Theme Park will be one of the key entertainment attractions at Qiddiya, the future capital of Entertainment, Sports and Culture The contract was awarded to ALEC Saudi Arabia Engineering & Contracting and El Seif Engineering Contracting, in a joint venture (JV) between the two companies. The Qiddiya Water Theme Park will be one of the key entertainment attractions at Qiddiya, the future capital of Entertainment, Sports and Culture. The agreement was formally signed between Qiddiya’s managing director Abdullah Aldawood, ALEC’s CEO Kez Taylor and El Seif’s CEO Ahmed Al-Bassam at a ceremony held at the Qiddiya Experience Center, followed by a ground-breaking ceremony to mark the start of construction. The park will cover 252,000m2 of land and will be home to 22 rides and attractions – including nine that will be world-firsts. Visitors will also be able to access nine zones – the Entry Gate, Camel Rock, Dub Grotto, Wave Wadi, the Den, Viper Canyon, Arabian Peak, the Herding Grounds and Surf Lagoon – inspired by the native animals that inhabit the area around Qiddiya. ALEC-El Seif JV At the signing ceremony, Abdullah Aldawood, board member and managing director, QIC, commented: “The Qiddiya Water Theme Park will be a year-round immersive family entertainment destination, the first of its kind and offering experiences that have never before been offered in Saudi. We are pleased to be working with industry leaders like ALEC and El Seif, who will be using the latest in guest experience technologies to create what is certain to be one of the world’s greatest water theme parks. It will offer our guests a chance to experience that in a welcoming and fun environment for everyone.” Design and sustainability elements The park design will incorporate advanced environmental systems to minimise the use of water through recycling and smart usage in line with QIC’s sustainability practices.

4

Some rides have been designed to use 75% less water compared to the more conventional rides found in other water parks. In addition, rainwater that falls on the site will be captured, treated and reused for irrigating the destination. The park will also integrate technologies to reduce water pressure in certain rides which will in turn reduce water evaporation by half. In addition, every pool in the complex will be based on a ‘run-out’ concept so that at the end of an exciting slide individuals will glide safely across a shallower pool that uses less water unlike traditional deeper pools used in other water parks. Kez Taylor, CEO of ALEC, added: “We are proud to work on this landmark project in collaboration with El Seif. ALEC’s established expertise in large-scale theme park projects, honed through the successful delivery of other iconic water parks in the GCC, combined with the local expertise of El Seif will ensure the rides and infrastructure at the Qiddiya set new standards for the region, offering adventure seekers of all ages truly one-of-a-kind experiences.” Ahmed Al-Bassam, CEO of El Seif, commented: “El Seif is one of the kingdom’s leading engineering and construction companies that has built some of Saudi Arabia’s and the region’s best known iconic projects such as the Kingdom Tower, Princess Noura University and Haramain High Speed Rail Rabigh Station. El Seif and ALEC have formed a strategic alliance and are committed to be the JV of choice for large complex projects in KSA. We are thrilled to be awarded, with our JV partner ALEC, the contract for the Water Theme Park. We thank Qiddiya for its confidence in our JV and look forward to delivering a world-class entertainment facility together – the first in Saudi Arabia and the largest in the region.” Qiddiya’s offering will be based on five cornerstones: Parks & Attractions, Sports & Wellness, Arts & Culture, Motion & Mobility and Nature & Environment, along with a variety of real estate options and community services. The Water Theme Park will be one of the key attractions of the Parks & Attractions cornerstone.

I SUSTAINABLE LANDSCAPE

Designing With Nature:

Aqaba Town Park By Yazan K. Mahadin MK Associates

Civilizations and cities are formed by people. Our cities are designed and shaped by architects, landscape architects, and planners. Historically, urban open spaces such as parks were planned as a respite from city life and a reaction to the environmental and social concerns that arose because of rapid urbanization. Urban parks, for instance, have played a significant role in our daily lives. Parks provide locations for leisure and recreational activities, as well as access to nature and opportunities for physical activity and relaxation. William Whyte stated in his book The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces that the primary function of urban public parks is to improve quality of life. Furthermore, Parks and open space development has various favourable impacts, according to researchers at The Trust for Public Land. Studies demonstrate that having enough parks and recreational activities reduces crime, and that investing in open spaces attracts new businesses, provides jobs, and encourages social interaction. Furthermore, parks and open space improve the value of surrounding properties while also providing a respite from the stresses of daily life. Participation of the community in the creation of local parks is frequently used as a catalyst for resolving neighbourhood issues. Saving land can provide towns with low-cost flood control and water treatment options.

26

Our team at MK Associates had a new challenge. We were commissioned for a 280 dunums open public park project in Aqaba, Jordan. Master Plan The city of Aqaba, a beach resort town, commissioned a city-wide master plan that centred on public areas. Aqaba town leaders believed it was necessary to conduct a visual assessment of the existing environment and public infrastructure due to the town’s growing importance as a tourist destination combined with the commercial shipping industry. This research paved the way for the town’s future as Jordan’s southernmost beach tourism destination. Aqaba Town Park, one of five public projects identified in the city-wide master plan, includes an outdoor theater, a coffee shop and restaurant, botanical garden, water features, and several play areas. The park’s centrepiece is a water dome, from which water channels flow in all four directions. Plants such as blossoming Jacaranda, Delonix regia, and Ailanthus altissima, as well as the connecting waterways, bring the many park functions together into one rich outdoor scene. The parks’ entrances, as they connect to neighbouring neighbourhoods, traffic patterns inside the city, and, most crucially, the conceptual reference to the natural landscape of this hilly sea-side location, were all given special attention.

Figure 1: Schematic design for Aqaba Town Park, 2006

The First Specialised Landscape Magazine in the Middle East

Process of Thinking Process of Thinking Our team started looking at various coastal cities when we first started thinking about the design of Aqaba Town Park. What better place to look for design inspiration for a beach resort than the Mediterranean? For example, Malta! Simply substitute Malta with the name of the city of Aqaba, and the relationship is strikingly similar. Malta’s cities are as much defined by the sea as any other city in Europe... a severe, dry environment with water always on the agenda. Looking at Richard England’s magnificent projects in Malta, you can see how he uses shapes, forms, and colors to create places with various spirits. The Garden for Myriam, for example, was made for Richard England’s wife and is described as “a space laced in threads of stillness to enable us to find the usefulness of being useless.” Furthermore, the core concept of the Waters of Reflection project is “the juxtaposition of water and building.” We progressed from this tiny size to the landscape of the sea and shoreline. “The brightness and darkness that emerge from a city’s open spaces, buildings, and streets are reflected in the seas that surround it”. Despite the lack of a tangible link, examining the seaside towns of Malta, with all of their histories and current regionalist updates, sparked a creative drive. An energy began to form around the design approach to Aqaba Town Park. Waters of Reflection’s physical visuals and architectural environment served as practical inspiration. The relationships between the landscape and architectural elements intrigues that create a compelling setting. Richard England, a true regionalist who is passionate about designing in the context of the natural and cultural surroundings, and other coastal town environmental designers are inspired by the sea, water, and light. A city’s relationship with the sea is never by chance; the city grew there because of the waterway, not the other way around. This is the kind of data that good designers need to collect. They must sense and feel the connection between land and sea, rather than oppose it. By studying coastal cities, we were able to find similar places to study and research this relationship. Moreover, to the physical data, each city and each project has its own rich history, culture, and regional identity.

This helped us to gather more ideas, brainstorm, and sketch. All of this information that we gained through this process helped us to get inspired while designing Aqaba Town Park We studied different projects in the Mediterranean to see how spaces have formed over time and history. Time and use have created rich living environments. The combination of parks, shops, colourful display houses, side street cafes, and markets create the tectonic tactile space of a cityscape. Site Analysis Looking at a similar surrounding setting allows you to see more than what is physically present. The impressions, thoughts, feelings, and smell of a place are collected and recorded in some sketches for future reference, recall, and refining in a new design. As the skilled designer sketches, perceives, and inhabits the landscape in anticipation of the design waiting at the home office, Aqaba Town Park, one searches for the essence. The organic characteristics of architecture and landscape architecture are derived from historical, environmental, and climatic restrictions. When environments lose their distinct qualities, they become essentially utilitarian settings that may be readily reproduced and transported from one location to another. As a result, they become a consumer good with no personal connection to the user or context.

27

I SUSTAINABLE LANDSCAPE The sketched assessments of Aqaba provide a simple grasp of how the land functions. The environmental analysis is turned into easy-tounderstand graphic data. Language barriers are broken down via images. They are a universally understood language. These diagrams and sketches depict how the physical world operates and outline design guidelines for Aqaba Town

The proposed architecture for Aqaba Town Park gives the impression of sea breezes. The forms in plan and perspective reflect the land’s natural gradation; how the wind flows over it; the need for air to rise to relieve the heat...the poetics of the natural landscape adapted to the man-made setting. Like a wave developing and curling and then losing its form again, round forms intensify the sense of place and then let it go. The main and side entrances of Aqaba Town Park include wavelike roof constructions that correspond to the wind analysis and wave concept..

I ENVIRONMENT

Closing the Green Infrastructure Gap Enhancing the environment: Bringing life to a fading city neighborhood Designed by: Ban Bani Baker, Haneen Abu Al Ata, Samer Abdul Jaber, Ibrahim Abu Khaled Supervised by: Prof. Anne Gharaibeh, Jordan University of Science and Technology Located in the north of Jordan, Irbid is usually a city with a pleasant Mediterranean climate and moderate temperatures most of the year. However, in recent years the city has witnessed overheating, pollution, and extremely cold but dry winters. The city’s downtown sprawled into the periphery, leaving some neglected neighborhoods. The project initiative aimed to breathe new life into one of the city’s dying neighborhoods. A district that once housed the villas of the affluent merchants,

32

physicians, attorneys, and engineers in the city’s downtown is now home to low-income residents as well as several artisan enterprises. This area is located north of Al-Hashimi Street. At its heart is the Ali Khulqi Sharaireh Roundabout (Large Saal Roundabout). This roundabout receives minimal traffic and acts as an open but unoccupied space. The analysis revealed that there is overheating owing to solar flux and the lack of green cover, random wind distribution that exacerbates the hot

The First Specialised Landscape Magazine in the Middle East

summers, and a lack of human interaction with the outdoors. This project addressed climate change issues by reducing solar flux, concentrating winds in the most desired locations, protecting some of the old façades with hand-cut stones, adding some food services to enrich the onstreet daily life, introducing hybrid craft learning spaces, and providing more green coverage to reduce the fossil fuel footprint. Interviews with the locals revealed their interest in other parts of the city where they could eat out and attend cafes that are missing from the downtown area. Several container café initiatives on the city fringe became a trend in the city, which took the vibe away from the city center. What once started as a tactical urbanism initiative is now bombarding every vacant corner in the city periphery.

33

I ENVIRONMENT

34

The First Specialised Landscape Magazine in the Middle East

The simulations analyzed wind direction and onsite heat waves. The solution is predicated on creating shields and wind breakers capable of controlling both wind and heat waves. The ultimate result is an additive façade that treats existing façades for a better living environment. The façades cling to a strong structure that gives a new character to the neighborhood, making it a more attractive location. The climax of structures formulated the core area that contained the green heart, the elevated round space with eating areas, and the hybrid grounds for everyone. As a result, the roundabout became a pedestrian area with live activities and many attractions. Employing the various site variables and opportunities resulted in the creation of an applicable model design for the site. This model started by adding a structure

that connects the existing buildings together, holding spaces above that contain new functions to attract people, like hybrid learning spaces and food stations. Design Features The Façades: In order to maintain the old building materials (stone and concrete) while redesigning the entrances of the craft shops to make them more recognizable; we adopted climatic variables that control the façade’s function. Realizing that the sun and wind variables have an extremely negative effect on these façades; we introduced the parametric façade treatment idea, which is made out of kinetic aluminum panels, covered with resin, and has voids for green spaces and

35

I ENVIRONMENT

in order to make a gentle breeze formulate rather than wind. Behind these façades, there is a structure emerging from the old buildings, adding units on top and reaching the central plaza to hold a hanging bridge in place. The Bridge Space: The circular structure hangs in the middle of the green plaza. People can jog, eat, sit, and interact with their surroundings in this space. The height is just enough to overlook the city and its street vistas from all directions. The top is kept occupied by the local foods and drinks that are served. Its vast width allows others to jog or stride along its periphery within a lush native tree canopy consisting of ilex oak, ithaburensis oak, carob, acacia, and zizyphus trees. The variety of evergreen and deciduous trees provides a nice air filter and a soft touch to this bare site. The hanging red-colored structures form an attraction to revive and interact with people and complement the variety of eating places and surroundings.

36

The First Specialised Landscape Magazine in the Middle East

Looking towards the far west, the user can locate the city’s archeological hill (Tal Irbid area). Beneath this are hanging food units that offer a variety of local foods. Many spaces are designed to create enclosures of various sizes for the public. The landscapes under the structures form curvilinear spaces, green areas, and an extension along the axis leading to the city center towards the west. A building clings to its eastern end, with two entertaining functions on the ground floor: “Paintball” and “Escape the Room”. This threestory entertainment center is going to be a great active attraction for youth and children. Place characteristics The resultant design is projected to improve economic activity, create opportunities for young people to work, serve as a lung for this fading area, promote more active circulation for visitors, and provide a link to nature in the center of the city. It will provide a location for people to meet, gather, wait, play, and dine to serve the local and visiting public’s demands.

37

I HYBRID INFRASTRUCTURE

Yuandang Bridge: a hybrid infrastructure connecting a coastal province with Shanghai

BAU Brearley Architects and Urbanists share their creative thought process behind their latest Chinese project. The Yuandang Pedestrian Bridge celebrates the coming together of Jiangsu Province and Shanghai. The 586m bridge is a hybrid structure incorporating landscape, infrastructure, and architecture. It is located in a key location where the two jurisdictions meet. The figure of the bridge resembles a ribbon and echoes water ripples on the Yuandang Lake below. Trees and shrubs are incorporated in the bridge, giving the appearance of a floating garden connecting the two banks. The six-

38

meter-wide bridge deck is divided into three bands: a cycling path, vegetation band and walking path. The winding bridge has three widened sections for resting and enjoying the lake view. Taking inspiration from local sculptural traditions, the bridge’s pavilion explores contemporary mathematics modeling to create a porous wall that is both sculpture and playground. The bridge is a dynamic ensemble, integrating ecology, transportation, landscape, and culture.

The First Specialised Landscape Magazine in the Middle East

What kind of structure it is in relation to the common bridge types? The bridge has a steel box girder construction. Twentynine prefabricated lengths and connected to form nine continuous beams with constant dimensions. The girders vary in width from 6-16m. Y-shaped columns sit on a reinforced concrete abutment sitting on bored 800mm diameter piles. This is a fairly common engineering approach in the Yangtse river delta which is founded on a deep silt.

Could you expand on the idea of the bridge and the landscape extending as a “hybrid” - was this a specific request of the client or something you felt it was important to bring to the project? The bridge extends the larger landscape. The districts on both sides of the lake are creating extensive networks of wetland parks along waterways and lakes. The two districts have both pedestrian path nets and bicycle greenway nets. The bridge

39

I HYBRID INFRASTRUCTURE connects both of the bicycle greenway and pedestrian path networks. The serpentine plan of both of the park›s networks is adopted for the bridge, making it a smooth formal extension. It also provides the benefit of varying progressive views, a Chinese classical garden principle. The planting of trees, shrubs and grasses on the bridge trees also acts as an extension of the landscapes on either side. The client did not plan on vegetation or pavilion on the bridge but embraced these initiatives. The bridge is a hybrid of several elements not usually seen in a bridge. Combining vegetation, pavilions, sculptural play spaces, and plazas with seating on a pedestrian bridge created hybrid conditions. The bridge transforms these elements simply by isolating them from land, elevating them high in the air and situating them over a large body of water. This shift of context provides an unexpected experience. Also, the increased amenity of shade, seating, play and engagement, enables and entices more users, including fauna. The canopy over sections of the bridge look like they are finished with a water ripple effect, how is this achieved? The pavilion soffit is a profiled stainless steel sheet. It is polished, giving it a reflective surface. The sheets were welded on site and the joints re-polished. The profiled or textured sheet is a product our metalwork construction team managed to source during design phase.

40

The First Specialised Landscape Magazine in the Middle East

Are you able to provide some more information on the mathematics modelling you mentioned was used in the design? The pavilion playground is based on a minimal surface mathematical model. These models are recognised in nature where organisms take on the most efficient shape, balancing many parameters including the strength and efficient use of materials. Soap bubbles are the most familiar type of minimal surface, evident when they span between various surfaces. We first explored minimal surfaces in our playground designs with rope nets and solid forms fifteen years ago. The surface perforation distribution was then designed with our engineer. Maximum perforation giving transparency is achieved where load is lowest and minimal perforation where the surface requires strength.

THE QUALITIES OF POLYSOFT:

The exciting range of vivid and subtle PolySoft hues is just the start of cutting-edge technology that mitigates the risks of slipping and provides a soft-fall landing for boisterous and adventure-seeking kids. Those colours are also formulated to retain their brilliance in harsh UV conditions and under exposure to chlorine.

Surface temperatures cooler than concrete, asphalt or rubber

Managing Director of PolySoft, Ophelia Zhu, says “Our Australian researchers spent years evolving and testing a new surface treatment that would make problematic aquatic and playground zones safer and more beautiful.” The scientists’ ultimate solution was to combine polyolefin beads in an aliphatic binder that pours flexibly around obstacles and play equipment and can be applied to seamlessly cover steps, pool edges and play platforms.

Hygienic and easy to maintain

The resulting surface is kind to bare feet, not only because it is softer than concrete or tiling, but because it stays cooler than

Independently verified anti-slip rating for wet or dry applications Resilient yet soft underfoot Excellent impact attenuation for playgrounds The strong chemical bond between PolySoft particles ensures superior lateral strength and durability Colourfast technology protects against premature fading and provides resistance to UV radiation, and to chemicals such as chlorine
