Mel Howse Things are not always what they seem. This is the discovery as you approach one of Mel Howse’s extra-ordinary sculptural vessels. Quite apart from their scale! At first glance these works of art are magnificent ceramics, but In fact these are works in spun steel within a glassy skin of fired vitreous enamels. The rich abstracted exterior and interior is a smooth web of fired colour. Most of her portfolio is architectural and permanently installed public art, and is concerned with art thriving within a space and integrating with its environs. Her work embraces both contemporary and traditional techniques using both glass and steel. Her largest commission is a 500m2 glass façade for the retailer Sainsbury’s. Mel has been made a Queen’s Scholar for her work with enamels and has a number of Sussex Heritage Awards to her name. In June 2013 she was awarded The Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust’s ‘Award For Excellence’. She is the first Scholar to receive the award and it is in recognition of her creative expansion of traditional craft skills into contemporary practice. Visit www.melhowse.uk to see her portfolio of commissioned work. This years Association of Professional Landscapers(APL) award ceremony was held on 12th March at the Gibson Hall. First established in 1995 to recognise and reward the high quality of work carried out by landscape contractors belonging to the organisation, the awards continue to gain recognition and popularity and this year judges saw 60 over entries and CED are very proud to have supplied four of the short listed projects. The clients wanted a private retreat that could be used day or night, was low maintenance and contemporary in style. They requested the garden provide an area for entertaining but was also a fun usable place for their children. While having to overcome some particularly difficult site problems and restrictions, the clever use of plank sandstone paving to match the interior wooden floor planks enabled the designers to stay true to their ethos to extend the interior space into the outdoors and helped to make both interior and exterior spaces feel much larger. Having been a supper of stone to the landscape industry for over 35 years it still brings a huge amount of delight to see our products being used in such remarkable ways and would like to thank all of the winners for using our products to create such beautiful spaces. Come and visit them on stand number E23 at this years LANDSCAPE show in Battersea Park this September.

With the recent increase in towns and cities offering ‘free wifi’ to allow shoppers and businesses the opportunity to constantly keep in contact, the drain on battery life from ‘smart phones’ continues to increase. Bright LED screens consume huge amounts of the battery energy and can run a battery from full to empty in as little as 4 hours. Often important calls or contact can be missed or just phoning for a lift home, or taxi is no longer possible with a dead battery. Street Charge resolves that issues easily Street Charge can be deployed either as a permanent solution (with sponsorship opportunities) as in New York where AT&T sponsored some in Battery Park, or else as temporary units for summer locations, fairgrounds, music festivals etc. they can then be stored during the winter months when not required. Never run out of charge on your mobile again. Available exclusively from Environmental Street Furniture who are exhibiting at LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September.
ESF
Street Charge has been successfully trialled in over 50 locations in New York, and is now available in Europe through a partnership with Belfast based Environmental Street Furniture, with a launch in the UK next month. The product keeps your mobile phone charged for people on-the-go in between home, office or the café, using only solar power.

Martha Schwartz
See us at LANDSCAPE
The LANDSCAPE Show is delighted to welcome the internationally renowned architect Martha Schwartz to the ever growing list of speakers at this years event. Featured here are some of her recent projects. Sowwah Square in Abu Dhabi which was completed in 2012 and is the first development within the larger Sowwah Island master plan and is intended to be the centre piece of the island development, providing a green retreat at the centre of the new commercial hub. On the southern edge of Sowwah Island, the main urban space is located on top of a twolevel retail podium and creates a landscape setting for the Sowwah Square complex. Future phases of the project will include a 5 star Business Hotel, serviced apartments, and additional retail complexes adjacent to Sowwah Square. Also shown is Fengming Mountain Park which is set on a 16,000m2 site, located in the growing Shapingba District of Chongqing. Opened in Spring 2013, visitors are taken on a dynamic journey via a series of iconic mountain-shaped follies, plazas, greenery and water features to the proposed Vanke Golden City Development sales centre. The brief was to design a demonstration park and urban public realm to express a unique indentiy in order to market the future development. The park is required to draw attention to the development sales centre from the upper main road and entrance from Fengxi Road; and be adaptable for retrofit and integration for the adjacent future development. The presence of water is an important part of Fengming Mountain Park and is expressed as a ‘flow’ of water from the arrival plaza to the sales centre, using a variety of different water effects, such as: channels, pools and jets to assist with cooling, provide sounds and atmosphere to what is a captivating landscape.

Aralia Garden Design
See us at LANDSCAPE
BALI Aralia Garden Design was set up in 2004 when Patricia Fox started out as a Garden Designer, working as a sole practitioner, and operating from her home office, very much on a part time local basis. Now celebrating 10 successful years in business having developed into a multidisciplinary landscape design studio with both UK and international clients. Aralia’s design team are now involved in a range of high end projects including a series of penthouse roof terraces at the prestigious Chelsea Creek Development, London, with world class Property Developer St George PLC (part of the Berkeley Home Group).
BALI (British Association of Landscape Industries) are very much part of this years LANDSCAPE show. With a new members pavilion, BALI will be there in force to show what their members are capable of achieving. As the UK’s largest represntaitve body for professional landscape contractors, garden designers and companies supplying products and services to the landscaping industry, BALI and its members work tirelessly to raise standards across the industry. Come and find out more about them at this years LANDSCAPE show in Battersea Park in September.
The Aralia design team have a wide selection of projects on their desks, or more accurately on their PC’s, from sprawling country estates to high specification urban gardens. They work on a broad range of projects, but tend to be involved on design projects that require a core element of innovation. This they believe is their speciality, coupled with their underlying professionalism in their approach across the board, from the design process through the full spectrum of their services. With a string of national awards to their name the team is well placed to provide that assurance and confidence to their clients. Aralia believes that the early stages of the project are absolutely key. Fox says ‘We spend a significant amount of time in the early stages working through the objectives for the brief and really exploring concepts and design styles with our clients. It is essential that we take the time to do so: it is the only way to know for sure that you are designing a landscape that is going to satisfy your client’s needs!’ The future for Aralia is looking good, come and listen to Patricia Fox, one of the speakers at the CPD accredited seminars at this years LANDSCAPE show in Battersea Park in September.

Australian Garden Show The dates have been set for the 2014 Australian Garden Show Sydney, to be held once again in Sydney’s iconic Centennial Park. The show will officially launch the start of the floral and garden shows that take place each year throughout NSW and will be held over four days from 4 - 7 September, 2014. Event Director, Anthony Bastic, AGB Events, says. “The 2014 Australian Garden Show Sydney promises to be a world-class outdoor event, which will once again attract the participation of highly respected international and Australian gardening experts. We design the show so it is both inspiring and educational for gardening novices as well as the more experienced gardeners via our popular educational workshops and lecture series. The first week of spring is also the perfect time to showcase what nurseries and retailers have on offer and launch new plant releases.” Australia’s key gardening associations have once again endorsed the show. David Foster, CEO, Nursery & Garden Industry NSW & ACT Ltd (NGINA) believes, “As an industry association we represent the nursery and gardening industry, we believe the Australian Garden Show Sydney offers the very best opportunity for industry to showcase itself to a large public audience. Through the experience we gained via exhibiting at this year’s show, we can guarantee that this is a quality event with real gardens and real value”.
The event will enable visitors at a perfect time of year, to soak up inspiration for outdoor spaces from some of the most spectacular display gardens that they will ever see. Bronzino Specified by leading architects and designers for luxury projects around the world, Bronzino® will be using LANDSCAPE 2014 in September to showcase its new Charger collection, a range of shallow planters designed specifically for use indoors and in small spaces.
Inspiration for Bronzino’s Charger came, says founder and designer Kenneth Topp: “from noticing that designers were looking for versatile containers that could be used to create low planting schemes that didn’t restrict a view or sightlines. Our Basin has been a popular product for larger gardens, but when it comes to a more intimate space or for a tabletop, Chargers are perfect. “The design works especially well for drought tolerant plants such as Echeveria, as these tend to have shallow roots. It’s a great way to give houseplants a more contemporary look.” Beautifully finished both inside and out, Chargers can also stand alone as table centrepieces, or used as casual storage for papers and magazines. Like all Bronzino designs, the Chargers are hand-made by artisans from solid copper. Kenneth’s expert knowledge of traditional metalworking can be seen in each design, and while many are based on historic forms, Bronzino designs are not reproductions. They are reinventions of the past, and new forms that have been created to meet contemporary functional requirements. Bronzino planters are available to order, in any quantity, they work with many of the world’s leading architects and designers, and are happy to ship worldwide. Come and talk to them at this years LANDSCAPE show in Battersea Park this September.

TopSport
Originally created in honour of the Queen’s silver jubilee in 1977, the Jubilee Gardens are situated on London’s South Bank. As tourist traffic to the area increased and other infrastructure projects including an extension to the Jubilee Tube line, the Golden Jubilee bridges, and the London Eye were undertaken, the plush grass slowly began to deteriorate. However, 31 years after the silver jubilee, the Jubilee Gardens Trust was formed to rejuvenate the gardens, bringing together neighbouring landowners, local businesses and community representatives in the process. TopSport, Tarmac Building Products’ professional landscaping division, was approached to offer advice on helping the Trust ensure that the new gardens received the optimum growing conditions for the turf and plants based on London’s soil type. After analysing the garden’s soil, TopSport developed a bespoke topsoil to suit the site’s planting requirements. This was achieved by blending a quality washed sand from Tarmac Building Products’ Kingsley Quarry, located in Hampshire, with Green Compost at a predetermined ratio. This created the perfect growing medium for both plants and grass.
See us at LANDSCAPE Over the course of the Jubilee Gardens renovation project, TopSport delivered 5,000 tonnes of the bespoke TopSport to the Central London site, ensuring the gardens had an appropriate supply of topsoil at all times to keep the project on track. Dale Mcrobbie at TopSport, commented: “The Jubilee Gardens is situated on one of London’s prime tourist areas and is just a stone’s throw away from the South Bank centre, the London Eye and the Houses of Parliament. It’s a common misconception that topsoil is a ‘one size fits all’ solution, but the PH levels within the ground differ around the country. Given the importance of this project, we wanted to ensure that we could offer a bespoke solution which was tailored to the specific area and best complemented the garden’s design. For more information on Tarmac Building Products’ Topsport range, please visit their stand at this years LANDSCAPE show in Battersea Park in September.
Woodblocx Institute of Horticulture The company that has turned the humble raised bed into a beautiful garden must-have is launching a nation-wide competition to help rejuvenate public gardens across the UK. WoodBlocX is pledging up to £5000 worth of it’s products as part of its Raised Bed Rescue campaign, which aims to help community and public gardens that are in need of some TLC. “We came up with the idea after being approached by Edinburgh Botanical Garden which hosts an Edible Gardening Project run by a team of volunteers,” said WoodBlocX’s Henry Blake. “The group is funded purely by donations and the team contacted us about supplying some raised beds.” “We have decided to put an annual budget aside for gardens and gardening groups to apply for which are in need of a little boost, maybe their current raised beds have fallen into disrepair or a group of people has a space set aside within the local community to set up a gardening group, whatever the circumstances we want to hear about it!” Gardens of any size can be entered into the competition as long as they are open to and used by the public. Those wishing to enter can do so via www.woodblocx.com/raisedbedrescue and fill in the entry form and specify the amount of raised beds they require and tell us why. The competition is open now and until 31st May 2014. WoodBlocX is an online company based in Scotland and is backed by Dragon’s Den Investor Peter Jones; its raised beds are widely used by gardeners, landscapers, schools, garden designers and businesses across the UK. Come and visit WoodBlocx at LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September and see the winners of the competition.

The Institute of Horticulture (IoH) is delighted to announce that Her Majesty the Queen has been graciously pleased to grant a Royal Charter to the Institute of Horticulture. The Institute’s Royal Charter will come into legal effect when it is sealed by the Crown Office at the House of Lords.. The granting of a Royal Charter has been an aspiration of the Institute since its inception in 1984 in view of the major benefits it will bring to the Institute and its members. A Royal Charter will enhance the Institute’s ability to present our profession through increasing the profile, recognition and standing of professional horticulture. As a Chartered body the Institute’s ability to raise standards will be strengthened and the Institute will be better placed to represent and support horticulture as a profession and assist members in the practice of the profession. Leigh Morris FI Hort, Institute of Horticulture President commented: “The IoH is THE body representing professional horticulture and being granted a Royal Charter will reflect that to a much wider audience. Such status will undoubtedly give our members a higher status, stimulate more to join us, give the IoH much greater gravitas in our advocacy for the industry and it is something the horticulture profession deserves. The work done to date by IoH Council on taking this forward on behalf of horticulture is tremendous and all of us should recognise their vision and application in achieving this. The Institute has raised the bar for professional horticulture in the UK and Ireland. This is a landmark moment and exciting times ahead!” The Institute of Horticulture are delighted to be back at LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September and look forward to welcoming new and existing members to their stand. www.horticulture.org.uk

Q Lawns are excited about the latest addition to their Meadowmat range of wild flower matting. Meadowmat’s Passchendaele Poppy Mix has been created for gardeners who wish to mark the centenary of the First World War and help support wildlife at the same time.
Chris Carr from Q Lawns commented on the new product “As a Company, we’re honoured to be able to help those who have done so much for us. My own Father served in the Green Howards Regiment for 25 years and took part in the Korean War. I’m a garrison kid and proud of it” Meadowmat created quite a buzz at the LANDSCAPE Show last year. “The world is waking up to the value of wild flowers” says Angela Lambert from Q Lawns “not just for their beauty, but for the vital role they play in ecosystems. There’s no easier way of establishing them in a garden than by using wild flower matting. It’s simply unrolled onto prepared ground, just like turf, and bingo! You have instant ground cover that will suppress annual weeds and impress garden visitors.” Meadowmat will be back at the show this year. The new Meadowmat for Birds and Bees will be on show and there’ll be plenty of expert advice on natural lawns and on green roofing using sedum matting. Please do come along and see it for yourself at this years LANDSCAPE show in Battersea Park this September.

Wayne Hart Wayne Hart, lettercutter, lettering artist and typographer, recently completed the prestigious memorial to C.S. Lewis in Poets’ Corner, Westminster Abbey. The final design, which took months of ideas, sketches and full-scale drawings, features Lewis’s name and dates in the center of the stone encapsulated by one of his quotes. This reads, ‘I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen, not only because I see it but because by it I see everything else’. The style of the lettering is very free to mimic Lewis’s imagination and writing style, though the composition of the piece is sober and retains the dignity of a memorial. The work was drawn and carved by hand in Purbeck Green Marble, with mallet and chisel, in Wayne’s studio in Manchester before being inset into the floor of the Abbey. The memorial was unveiled during a special service at Westminster Abbey on the 22nd November 2013, the fiftieth anniversary of Lewis’s death. This was Wayne’s second major public art project since setting up his studio in October 2012. It follows his piece On ignore la Somme des mots, sited on the Hortillonages site in Amiens, France. Wayne’s piece, a 3.5 met re-high column of corten steel contains words written by local Picard poet, Pierre Garnier, and was installed in a small wooded area. He chose corten steel as the outer layer of the material rusts, connecting it with the landscape which is dominated by water.

EXOTIC SATURDAY 26 APRIL 2014 • Imperial College, London SW7 1LU Spring – an excellent time to refresh your thinking about gardens, about their design and planting. Exotic will celebrate gardens that invite us to enter an alternative world: to celebrate the flamboyant, the extreme, the extraordinary. What do we mean by exotic? Gardens are by definition unnatural, even if their constituent parts are entirely natural – natural, but not necessarily native, or reflective of local landscape or culture. Exotic is not static – plants that not so long ago were labelled as such are now accessible to all, widely available and grown. Exotic is not necessarily tender, wherever garden making is taking place – right plant right place still rules, and many plants have looks that ‘read’ exotic but they are reliably hardy in most parts of the country. Exotic will explore and examine the extraordinary – it promises to be an excellent adventure. Our speakers invite you to come and find out more!
SPEAKERS
Picture © Made Wijaya
Made Wijaya jumped ship from Australia to Indonesia, and now builds exotic jungles across the world. Monty Don described his meeting: “...at his home at Villa Bebek where he strides round from group to group dressed in shirt, turban, dark glasses and long wrap-around, shouting, cajoling, flirting, roaring with laughter and working on twelve different projects at once.” Dan Hinkley will provide a privileged look into his new garden - introductions that have flourished there, and those that have not done so well. He will also give us insights into establishing a prairie meadow - what thrives and becomes a thug, what has failed dismally. Not to be missed, this is a preview of some of the plants we will all be using in the next few years. Sarah Eberle the dictionary describes the opposite of exotic as being boring, native, standard, common, normal, dull ordinary and familiar! Sarah Eberle investigates how to bring an 'exotic' feel to our work in order to make it alluring, different, fascinating, glamorous and enticing. Overall design, plants and features all contribute to the 'WOW Factor' that makes it stand apart. Sarah will be looking at projects in London, the New Forest, Oxfordshire and Berkshire along with the inspiration from travels abroad. James Wong will give us a showcase on some of the world’s best exotic gardens to examine their cuttingedge, innovative ethos. Tropical garden style is premised on embracing change, modern ideas and new techniques. James will show us what the UK designer can learn from this. We are not giving you a conference on plants to put in your conservatory, rather opening a brave new world. Sponsored By:

Thrive Thrive is a national charity that uses gardening to help people living with disability or mental ill health affect positive change in their lives. The charity uses social and therapeutic horticulture to bring about positive transformations in the lives of disabled and disadvantaged people. Thrive runs a number of projects which help people with all kinds of disabilities; those whose lives are blighted by mental ill health; stroke survivors; people with a visual impairment; those living with dementia; people living with acquired brain injury; those with learning difficulties; older people looking for ways of maintaining good health and becoming less socially isolated and young people with special needs. One of its most recent projects, funded by The Royal British Legion, is called Down to Earth which sees the charity working with exmilitary personnel. It uses elements from Thrives’ successful ‘Working it Out’ programme, which, alongside the social and therapeutic horticulture aspect follows a City and Guilds training pattern leading to qualifications and hopefully onto employment. Can you help Thrive? Thrive relies on donations to fund its work helping hundreds of people every year harness the benefits of gardening in order to make positive life changes and achieve ambitions. The charity is always looking for corporate supporters and volunteers to either garden with them on team building days, or to raise funds in other ways like being sponsored to wear wellies to work, or fill one of its garden shed collecting boxes. Garden Museum
See us at LANDSCAPE
In August 2014 the Garden Museum’s Director, Christopher Woodward, will swim the length of the River Thames from Oxford to London in an epic journey that mirrors the Tradescant Collection’s journey when it left Lambeth for Oxford over 350 years ago. If successful, Christopher will become only the fourth person to swim this distance. The generosity of the Ashmolean Museum will enable the Garden Museum to recreate part of the Tradescant Collection, which was a museum in Lambeth but was bequeathed to Sir Elias Ashmole to become The Ashmolean, the oldest public museum in Britain. The collection, a wonder of 17th century London known as ‘The Ark’, is a cabinet of curiosities assembled from their travels by the Tradescant family, the gardener-scholars whose legacy lies at the heart of the Garden Museum. This story inspired Christopher to retrace the journey of the collection that first left Lambeth by water for Oxford in 1683; earlier sponsored swims of The Hellespont and The Strait of Gibraltar have raised over £35,000 for the Museum’s collection and the setting up of an archive of garden design. Donations towards this Swim will go towards the recreation of the Ark as a permanent installation at the Museum, but will also count towards our target of matching the Heritage Lottery Fund award for the Garden Museum Development project. Christopher is one of the featured speakers at this years LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park in September, please come along and listen to how he got on.

Well one developer, in co-ordination with UK Power has broken the mould. Poplar HARCA housing trust in East London commissioned leading mosaic artist Gary Drostle to come up with a scheme that would be both tough, beautiful and reflect on the purpose of the block in it’s latest housing development.

Gary took the flow of electrons along a circuit and it’s relationship to electro-magnetism and the visible spectrum as his inspiration. Using the rich colours of hand made glass Smalti, Gary’s mosaic sparks with life and colour, the very essence of electricity. This new work includes also includes two innovative features, departing from Gary’s obvious skill in this most ancient craft. The first innovation is in the centre of the work, a QR code made in the same glass mosaic connects the viewer to an animated film made by local school children in an associated project devised by Gary. The second innovation becomes apparent as night falls, when the main ‘circuit’ line of transparent glass Smalti lights up, forming the circuit around the building.

What to do with those anonymous blocks that sit in our streets, the electricity sub station? Architects and landscape architects have often wondered how to deal with these necessary but boring blocks of brick.

This years LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park will be featuring at least featured earlier in this magazine, we will be joined by John Taylor from Malmo and
Richard has been designing gardens for over 15 years, both in the UK and abroad, including a country garden for a grade 1 listed house in Norfolk, a 15 acre garden for a new build Palladian mansion in Surrey and numerous town gardens in London. Richard was chosen to represent the United Kingdom in the 2012 Gardening World Cup in Nagasaki Japan, his garden ‘Serenity’. Despite being rooted in this time-honoured tradition, his gardens are clean and classically contemporary in style, with a strong sense of geometry. If there is a theme that runs through his work it is the curved hedging that winds its way though his herbaceous borders or stands out in sensuous baroque curves against lawn or gravel. Symmetry is also important, coupled with a sense of balance and proportion, resulting in gardens that are both harmonious and handsome.
Richard Miers
2014 is shaping up to be a busy year for Richard with projects taking him to Cambridgeshire, Surrey and Sardinia. He will also be working closer to home on a couple of London gardens and two London roof terraces. Come and listen to Richard at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park to hear what else is new.
Originally from Plymouth in Devon, Saul trained as an Archaeologist but soon found his call digging different kinds of holes in gardens. He worked and studied as a Carew-Pole sponsored trainee at Antony House, a National Trust property on the Rame Peninsula in Cornwall. After 5 years he was accepted to study the Kew Diploma in Botanical Horticulture at RBG, Kew after which he worked there further as a Woodland Garden Horticulturist. Saul then moved into the shows department at the RHS in April as the Deputy Show Manager of the Hampton Court Palace Flower show and after a very successful 2013 show, moved over to the Chelsea Flower Show as the new Show Manager. Saul will be one of the speakers at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park and will be telling you about how to design and get sponsorship for one of their show gardens.

She has seen commercial success through a variety of business ventures that embrace landscape design (Winner of Gold and Silver medals at the Chelsea Flower Show London), publishing (6 Greenfingers Guides), broadcasting (Room with a Viewer BBC, Home Works BBC, Homegrown Anglia for ITV, Britain’s Best Back Gardens ITV). Her latest gardening venture - ‘Lucy Summers Living’ - takes her into the world of garden related merchandising with advice. She is looking forward to sharing new products and gardening technologies that she regularly discovers across Britain. Traditionally, Lucy has designed gardens for people who have large open spaces to work with and equally large wallets! What Lucy has discovered over the years is that many of these clients know next to nothing about gardening except that they want a stunning space to complement their cherished home.

Taylor, 48, went to Sweden in 1992 and currently works as one of the faces on Sveriges Television’s Trädsgårdsonsdag (“Garden Wednesday”) programme. It’s been a long road from Sheffield to Sweden’s small screen, one that involves love, the Territorial Army, and getting kicked out of Swedish classes in the aptly name Rosengård (“Rose Garden”). He had his gardening training in tow when he arrived, but his first task was to master the language. He realized quickly that learning the native tongue was the key to blooming opportunity. He found Swedish to be quite easy and picked it up quickly - within a year he was speaking fluently. And now with over 20 years of Swedish experience under his belt, it’s safe to say that Taylor has indeed made it. He even has his own set of fans. This year at LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park he will be talking about his role as head gardener in the Slottsträdgården project at the Malmö Castle Garden and the Malmo Garden Show. This year is the fourth time that Malmo Garden Show will be held in the beautiful castle garden. Last year they had over 25,000 visitors Please come along and listen to John tell you how to become involved in this important annual event, either as a visitor or a designer of one of their show gardens.

These were then used as flowerbeds to create a tranquil space on level three. Here visitors can relax, catch their breath or take a look at the interesting views of the Birmingham skyline. After being transported from the Europlanters factory in Stockport the planters were then lifted by crane and positioned before planting began ready for the opening. Hahn Plastics offer a landscape range which is ideally suited to applications where lifespan is as important as it is durable; lasting at least five times longer than timber. Many landscaping designs now incorporate the use of recycled plastic products because of their many product benefits which include water impervious, hard wearing as well as being maintenance free. Castle Special School in Cambridge recently had to find an alternative product to replace failing timbers. The school, which has 165 children attending, was opened in 2006 to replace four existing special schools in Cambridge. Timber had been used to edge planting bays and due to the poor quality of the existing material large areas were now unusable and also unsafe. The Hahn Plastics recycled rectangular palisade that was used is ideal for challenging outdoor environments. The timber equivalent had rotted very quickly due to the poor quality preservatives that are used in timber since the legislation that stopped the use of oil based preservatives. There are a great variety of hanit® palisades, suitable for creative design in any new development, reconstruction and modernisation project. They are strong, durable and weatherproof, the palisades have a smooth splinter free finish. They have strong impact resistance and require little maintenance. The brown and textured surface resembles the natural beauty of wood. These products can be easily cut, nailed and screwed. Why not visit Hahn at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park to see for yourself.
CPD Certification
As part of LANDSCAPE’s ongoing commitment towards uniting the industry and enhancing the professional qualifications of it’s practitioners, all of the seminars at this year’s LANDSCAPE Show will qualify for CPD learning points. This accreditation means that attending any of the Seminar Sessions hosted in all theatres now counts towards delegates’ Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points. CPD is defined as ‘a commitment to structured skills enhancement and personal or professional competence’ and organisations that are granted membership by the CPD Certification Service must clearly demonstrate expertise in their field and provide a place for industry to turn to for advice and guidance.
LANDSCAPE which opens in Battersea Park, London on the 23rd of September 2014, will be running an extensive free two-day seminar programme. The full programme will be available to view online in August at www.landscpeshow.co.uk.
On achieving CPD certification for the programmes, Event Director Jeremy Storey-Walker says: “We are delighted to offer visitors to LANDSCAPE the broadest range of free and relevant content delivered by some of the highest-level experts in the industry. We believe this exciting offer is enhanced further through the ability of delegates at these presentations to credit their attendance towards their CPD.” “Being accepted as a member of the CPD Certification Scheme also reinforces the quality of LANDSCAPE’s seminar programme and the real value that delegates can gain from attending these sessions.” Attendees will receive their Certificates of Attendance at the end of each session they attend.

With the United Kingdom’s adoption of the Government Construction Strategy (GCS), the necessity for BIM solutions specific to landscape architecture has risen and Land F/X is poised to lead the way. “The GCS currently shows little direct relevance to site,” says Jeremiah Farmer, Land F/X CEO, “however, the necessity is still the same.”

Land F/X, is one of the standards in landscape architecture and irrigation design software. They are delighted to announce their attendance at the 2014 LANDSCAPE Show in London in response to a growing international user-base and debate over the Government Construction Strategy.
“Landscape architecture is the profession at the center of all the disciplines most equipped to respond to site conditions, coordinating with architects, civil engineers, and irrigation consultants – and in the case of some our clients, like Disney Imagineering, even with the roller coaster designers,” says Farmer.
Land F/X See us at LANDSCAPE
“In short, landscape architecture requires highly specialized software, the same as architects, we just don’t have a prevalent acronym for what we do, other than calling it, ‘Land F/X’,” says Farmer. Coinciding with Landscape in Battersea Park this September will be the launch of the latest version of Land F/X 11.0 will include the ability to send COBie files – well ahead of the 2016 BIM Task Force deadline. Hannah Griffiths is a mosaic artist and painter; she makes bespoke mosaics for public and private clients. Trained as a fine art painter, most of her work is initially developed through painting and then she loves the process of transposing these designs into mosaics, which is a beautiful and tactile medium. Working with a variety of materials including glass and ceramic tesserae, gilded glass and broken china she has undertaken diverse commissions including wall art for colleges and hospitals. Numerous domestic commissions for floors, kitchens, tables, mirrors etc. have been inspired by diverse subject matter including African textiles, Moroccan pattern, Italian church floors, the crown jewels, space invaders and red hot chilli peppers. In 2012 Hannah created an exquisite egg ‘Conchiglia’ for The Faberge Big Egg Hunt London. In 2011 she made a beautiful crocodile, ‘Flora’, for Jungle City Edinburgh, and in 2010 she made ‘Figgy’ for Elephant Parade London. In 2009 Hannah was honoured to be awarded a scholarship by QEST to attend the Master in Mosaic course at Orsoni in Venice where she learnt how to work with smalti mosaics, which are made from beautiful handmade enamelled glass and cut with a traditional hammer and hardie, in the oldest and most respected mosaic establishment. Hannah will be exhibiting at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park as part of the QEST Pavilion.

The world’s first 3D printed garden show took place in The Strand Gallery, London recently. The idea was that ten leading garden designers were commissioned to design unique and ambitious gardens without the self limiting constraints of budget, engineers and sponsors. All in 3D printed miniature! Some of the gardens are 10 metres deep, some 10 metres tall, all of them are very different from your average gardens and hopefully will inspire gardeners to do something new with their own plot. The internationally renowned designers come from the UK, Australia, Korea and Italy. Made possible by using 3D printing alongside traditional modelling techniques has made high quality, detailed and accurate models accessible for the first time.

Following it success the ‘exhibition’ will be touring Europe and then Japan and Australia later this year.

The Waitrose Store in Droitwich Spa, which has now been open for almost a decade, is a fine example of initial investment in car park tree planting really paying off. Retailers benefit from brand-building activities, including increasingly attractive shopping environments, encouraging greater numbers of visitors and inferring a premium on product prices.
Greenleaf
Much more emphasis is being placed on improving the long-term success rate of trees in retail car parks. Large mature trees are particularly effective in regulating the microclimate, attenuating and filtering water, attenuating noise, improving air quality and sequestering carbon.

The tree pit detail, which was designed by Comprehensive Design Architects (CDA) with technical assistance from Greenleaf, includes structural soil modules, which provide additional rooting volume underneath the adjacent hard paving. The roots are guided to this slightly deeper profile with the use of a RootDirector. Deeper roots will prevent any risk of root damage to adjacent hard surfaces and increase drought tolerance and tree stability in high winds.

Jacksons LANDSCAPE spoke to Louise Tomlin of Jacksons Fencing. She said: “It seems a long time ago now that we were all basking in the September sun in Battersea Park and enjoying chatting to visitors at last years LANDSCAPE show. There’s no doubt there was a really good ‘buzz’ that comes from having of a great mix of people. I think if this year continues to fly past as it has done so far, we will be looking at the next show in September before we know it! The timing of the show is particularly good for me as it is early autumn. It means it is something to focus on after the hullaballoo of spring and summer, espicalyy after the Jacksons Show Gardens Design competition, which peaks late May/early June. Crazy or not we’ve agreed to run the competition again this year and the fact that we are doing this for a fifth year seems to have been very well received by landscape professionals, if the numbers registering their interest this year is anything to go by. This is reinforced quite nicely by the numbers of garden designers, landscape architects and other landscape professionals, who introduce themselves to me at shows like LANDSCAPE and then ask if I am doing the competition again next, that has to be an encouraging sign!
See us at LANDSCAPE We launched our Retreat shelter at LANDSCAPE last September, this product was developed from an initial idea of a garden structure in The Sanctuary by Joanne Winn, one of the winning show garden designs last year. It was certainly well received and I’m pleased to say that it now gets to kick its heels up at the RHS Chelsea flower show in May in Chris Webb’s Sculpture Garden. This will be a space where visitors are warmly invited to freely touch and explore his work. The sculptures are thoughtfully positioned in a beautiful garden setting themed to complement the work. Chris will be working on the completion of a large stone carving during the show in his ‘pop-up’ workshop. Our Retreat will lend itself perfectly to a ‘sheltering’ role in the garden.” Come and see the Jacksons range and talk to Louise at LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September.

Perennial A host of gardening glitterati turned out to celebrate the 175th anniversary of Perennial, the UK’s only charity working exclusively to support horticulturists.
Established in 1839 by a group of wealthy landowners who wished to provide for their long-serving head gardeners in retirement, The Gardeners’ Benevolent Institution began life as a pension fund. It soon attracted the attention of Victorian high society, who willingly supported the fund with annual donations and appearances at its annual fundraising dinner. Perennial, as the same Institution is now known, still helps gardeners across the UK in retirement and has extended its reach to all professionals working in and retired from horticulture and their families. The charity provides a range of financial services to people experiencing hardship, and in the current economic climate is needed more than it ever was. In 2013 Perennial helped over 1,200 people, over 85% of whom were still of working age and a quarter of people needed help with debt. Perennial helps with debt advice, financial and general support, and often simply as a listening friend who can help make sense of a situation. Please visit Perennial at this years LANDSCAPE show in Battersea Park in September.
HRH Princess Alexandra, Perennial’s Royal Patron and Alan Titchmarsh, Perennial’s President and Perennial’s Chair Sir Roger Singleton cut a magnificent birthday cake to mark exactly 175 years to the day since the Gardeners’ Benevolent Institution (now Perennial) was founded.

Gilkicker
Last year was Gilkicker’s busiest season for sales and installations of their Light`n`Shade adjustable louvred canopy roofs. It was also the first year that the area of square metres of Light`n`Shade installed on commercial applications matched the area of square metres installed on domestic applications. Gilkicker Ltd. took the decision to promote the advantages of the adjustable Light`n`Shade system to commercial clients and designers in 2011 and were surprised at how quickly the concept and idea was adopted by the industry. The company are involved in supplying opening and closing roofs for a number of alfresco dining areas for projects in beer gardens, restaurant terraces, an outside kitchen a dining area for a boutique hotel and several covered play and learning areas for nursery schools.
See us at LANDSCAPE
In all these projects it was the flexibility of the system that the clients and project teams liked about the product. Being able to supply any size and almost any shape of adjustable louvred roof in a variety of materials and colours meant that the design team were not limited or restricted. In turn the clients have been pleased to increase usable space and were delighted at how easy and quick to use the Light`n`Shade roof is throughout the day. It only takes a couple of seconds to adjust a Light`n`Shade system from a waterproof roof to an open area where up to 95% of the available sunlight and daylight can be enjoyed underneath. Come and see the roofs in action yourself at LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September.
LANDSCAPE show at Battersea Park 2013 was a good opportunity to meet decision makers from all over the industry as well as designers, landscapers and students. We distributed all of our application forms and received lots of interest from designers who were looking for gardeners they could recommend. New member applications increased by 50% in the 2 months following the show. Awareness of The Gardeners Guild continues to grow with features in articles by Horticulture Week, The Times and The Telegragh. Guild members, The Benton Brothers, won a contract to present a gardening segment on ITV’s This Morning and even Aviva insurance linked to our website when they wrote an article about professional trades. Exhibiting at respected trade shows such as LANDSCAPE 2014 will specifically help us to increase awareness of The Gardeners Guild among other horticultural professionals.
See us at LANDSCAPE
Gardeners have experienced very difficult trading conditions in recent years. After the floods of 2012 we saw a very cold spring, followed by a late but welcome heat wave, an extremely mild autumn and then winter flooding. The weather also has a noticeable impact on new member applications to The Gardeners Guild.
Gardeners Guild As a trade network, our primary objective is to provide qualified gardeners with affordable access to practical business support and services. During 2014 we will continue to increase member numbers and add new member benefits. We look forward to meeting anyone interested in The Gardeners Guild at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park. If you are thinking of starting a career as a self employed gardener please feel free to come and talk to us at the show.
