APL The Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) and the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) are delighted to announce the entries that have been selected for the ‘Your Garden, Your Budget’ category at this year’s RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show (813 July 2014). The category, now in its third year, exclusively open to members of the APL and aims to showcase a practical approach to gardens that also provide a wow factor where visitors will be able to recreate the garden design, based on a fixed budget for hard landscaping, plant material and labour. A total of four gardens have been selected to showcase what can be achieved for a £7k, £10k, £13k and £15k budget. APL Chairman, Mark Gregory said: “2014 is an exciting year for the APL and we are delighted to be once again working with the RHS for the third year on ‘Your Garden, Your Budget’. Congratulations to the APL members for having their garden selected for RHS Hampton Court. These gardens aim inspire the nation’s 23 million gardeners and show that having a professional, landscaped garden need not cost you the earth.” The Association of Professional Landscapers represents landscapers who meet a required standard of professionalism. Alloway Timber A Staffordshire garden has been transformed into an idyllic retreat following a £5,000 redesign using Timeless Timber products where a stunning 40m² raised Timeless Timber Brushwood deck forms the centrepiece of the space, which has been completely renovated with eye-catching features that will stand the test of time.

Mandy and Glenn Hulse, who won the garden makeover in Homebuilding & Renovating magazine, are now able to enjoy the outdoor haven from the comfort of their own garden and Sean and Mandy Kinsella from Mandskape Garden Design completed the fit out in under two weeks. Sean said: “We used Brushwood decking, Timeless Timber sleepers and BSW fencing products to turn this garden into the perfect outdoor retreat. The Brushwood decking was great to work with and has completely transformed the look of this garden. During the fit out, we had the idea of using Timeless Timber sleepers to edge the decking, which has given the area a unique, quality finish. We’re delighted with the end result.”

Eve Johnson, marketing manager at BSW Timber (which produces Timeless Timber), said: “Our Timeless Timber is designed to create quality and hard-working garden features that look beautiful and it’s clear that this garden makeover ticks all of those boxes.” Come and see the range for yourself on their stand at LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September.

BALI BALI Pavilion line-up showcases this year’s top landscape products Following the success of many BALI Affiliate (supplier) members’ products on the show gardens at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show, LANDSCAPE is providing the perfect opportunity for visitors to see some of those products for themselves in the BALI Pavilion. More than a dozen BALI Affiliate members will be exhibiting at LANDSCAPE, giving industry professionals from the UK and overseas the opportunity to discuss their own landscape projects and obtain first-hand advice and technical input. Everything from garden lighting, timber products and nursery stock to natural stone, green roof turf and contemporary paving will be on show. Chelsea 2014 was hugely successful for BALI members across the board and their final medal tally was six Gold, eight Silver-Gilt, six Silver and a Silver Flora medal. The medal winning designers rely on the contractors’ skills and professionalism to turn their designs into reality, which is why so many show gardens are constructed by BALI contractors. BALI members are always keen to broaden their knowledge and gain competitive advantage so this year’s seminar programme at LANDSCAPE will be hugely popular. BALI will have its own membership information area in the BALI Pavilion and will welcome enquiries from designers, contractors, product suppliers, training providers and students. CPD Certification

As part of LANDSCAPE’s ongoing commitment towards uniting the industry and enhancing the professional qualifications of it’s practitioners, all of the seminars at this year’s LANDSCAPE Show will qualify for CPD learning points. This accreditation means that attending any of the Seminar Sessions hosted in all theatres now counts towards delegates’ Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points. CPD is defined as ‘a commitment to structured skills enhancement and personal or professional competence’ and organisations that are granted membership by the CPD Certification Service must clearly demonstrate expertise in their field and provide a place for industry to turn to for advice and guidance.

LANDSCAPE which opens in Battersea Park, London on the 23rd of September 2014, will be running an extensive free two-day seminar programme. The full programme will be available to view online in August at www.landscpeshow.co.uk.

On achieving CPD certification for the programmes, Event Director Jeremy Storey-Walker says: “We are delighted to offer visitors to LANDSCAPE the broadest range of free and relevant content delivered by some of the highest-level experts in the industry. We believe this exciting offer is enhanced further through the ability of delegates at these presentations to credit their attendance towards their CPD.” “Being accepted as a member of the CPD Certification Scheme also reinforces the quality of LANDSCAPE’s seminar programme and the real value that delegates can gain from attending these sessions.” Attendees will receive their Certificates of Attendance at the end of each session they attend.

Gardening Leave Gardening Leave is a charity that tends to the invisible wounds of conflict using horticultural therapy. Gardening Leave helps troubled Armed Forces veterans at projects in London, Glasgow and Ayr – a new site will open in Dundee later this year.

It helps veterans find peace, strength and recovery in the garden with professionally conducted, individual, goal-orientated treatment sessions within a safe horticultural environment. £50 pays for a half-day horticultural therapy session for a veteran. At the LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park this September, Gardening Leave’s horticultural therapists will be on hand to talk about the charity’s work. They will also be selling plants, grown at the charity’s Royal Hospital Chelsea project in London, and raising awareness of its Honesty campaign aimed at tackling stigma around veterans’ mental health.

Chartered Institute of Horticulture The Institute of Horticulture (IoH) is delighted to announce that Her Majesty the Queen has been graciously pleased to grant a Royal Charter to the Institute of Horticulture. The Institute’s Royal Charter will come into legal effect when it is sealed by the Crown Office at the House of Lords.. The granting of a Royal Charter has been an aspiration of the Institute since its inception in 1984 in view of the major benefits it will bring to the Institute and its members. A Royal Charter will enhance the Institute’s ability to present our profession through increasing the profile, recognition and standing of professional horticulture. As a Chartered body the Institute’s ability to raise standards will be strengthened and the Institute will be better placed to represent and support horticulture as a profession and assist members in the practice of the profession. Leigh Morris FI Hort, Institute of Horticulture President commented: “The IoH is THE body representing professional horticulture and being granted a Royal Charter will reflect that to a much wider audience. Such status will undoubtedly give our members a higher status, stimulate more to join us, give the IoH much greater gravitas in our advocacy for the industry and it is something the horticulture profession deserves. The work done to date by IoH Council on taking this forward on behalf of horticulture is tremendous and all of us should recognise their vision and application in achieving this. The Institute has raised the bar for professional horticulture in the UK and Ireland. This is a landmark moment and exciting times ahead!” The Institute of Horticulture are delighted to be back at LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September and look forward to welcoming new and existing members to their stand. www.horticulture.org.uk

Cityscapes Following last year’s ‘container garden’ as part of Cityscapes Remix Garden project at Oxo Tower Wharf, Daniel Lobb is creating another eye catching and intellectually engaging installation. Cityscapes have teamed up with investigative arts organisation Siobhan Davies Dance to facilitate garden designer Lobb’s latest work, which is an horticultural response to the interior architecture and daily activities within the Siobhan Davies Studio building in Elephant & Castle. The installation entitled ‘As above, so below’ features a suspended landscape, utilising a water cycle to sustain plant life, exploring the novel creative possibilities of growing plants indoors. Drawing moisture from the air, the work transforms the environment’s atmosphere into water, to establish and feed a self dependent ecosystem. The design utilises a series of planters interconnected by rills suspended within the airspace of the building’s atrium. The planters, filled with soil and planted with various forms of ferns, mosses, lichen and toadflax, are inspired by the multifaceted and asymmetric forms of pomegranates. The water collected by a dehumidifier on the first floor is fed to the plants via the rills, with the excess travelling down to a collection bowl at ground level, from which the water evaporates, to create a sustaining feedback cycle.

“I am delighted to be working with Cityscapes and Siobhan Davies Dance, two organisations which are at the forefront of breaking down the barriers between artistic disciplines. ‘As above, so below’ is a site-specific response to the building’s architecture, mimicking the greater planetary cycle that constantly sustains all life, reflecting the interconnectedness of humans and plant life”. Daniel Lobb, Garden Designer. “Once again Daniel Lobb has created a garden installation which is horticulturally astute, intellectually inspiring and aesthetically engaging, exploring the novel and unexpected ways in which people and plants interact”. Darryl Moore, Cityscapes Director.

The Gardeners Guild There is often hot debate about whether or not qualifications are necessary to be a professional gardener. Whatever your view, gardening courses are currently very popular and membership applications for The Gardeners Guild are continuing to rise. During the first 6 months of 2014 they received 55 successful applications for membership. The vast majority of these are RHS qualified, have multiple qualifications or have studied at degree level. Some of their members are part time trainers themselves. A happy consequence of this is that the member forum is well supported by knowledgeable people. 30% of these applications were made by professional female gardeners. This is something they are very proud of and demonstrates that horticulture is gender neutral. Success is based on good plant knowledge and business sense. Despite the increasing number of members, they have still maintained a 90% renewal rate (This is pro rata based on the first 6 months of the year. Actual renewal rates for the first half of 2014 is 95%). The addition of new member benefits such as their maintenance contract / Terms of Business template has given a boost to membership interest. Many more member benefits are planned. Autumn is a busy time for The Gardeners Guild and they expect applications to increase in the second half of the year. If you would like to learn more about TGG please come and meet them on their stand at LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September.

Q Lawns

GLDA

Q Lawns from Norfolk is one of the country’s top lawn turf growers and is using its grassland knowledge to help reverse the catastrophic decline in Britain’s wildflower meadows.

Gary Foran, Chairman of the Garden & Landscape Designs Association, records the historical evolution of Irish design and the pivotal role played by the association in raising it to international standards.

Specialists at the company have grown a specially developed turf that is studded with almost thirty natural British meadowland wildflowers. In the past 60 years more than 90% of the country’s natural wildflower meadows have been lost, a staggering 7 million acres.

Prior to the formation of the Garden and Landscape Design Association (GLDA) in the mid-1990s, garden design had gone largely unrecognised as an independent profession by the Irish public. The first meeting of the GLDA took place in Dublin, at home of founder member Angela Jupe. Angela had an earnest desire to establish a society in Ireland en par with the well-established Society of Garden Designers in the UK. It was Angela’s passion and perseverance which brought together the founding members in the summer of 95’.

“This is a national catastrophe for the Britain’s fragile eco-system and for butterflies, honey and bumble bees and seed eating birds in particular,” says Q Lawns Chris Carr. “Meadow Mat is a simple to install turf suitable for domestic gardeners and those wanting to grow meadow flowers on a larger scale. We have developed two ranges of wild flowers and grasses that have been deliberately selected because of the benefits they provide to the species most at risk from the dramatic decline in wildflower meadows.”

One of the biggest success stories of the GLDA to date, has been its hosting of an annual design seminar, which continues to be a well-respected and popular event, drawing in a diverse audience of industry academics, professionals and students alike. Early seminars saw high-profile designers such as James Van Sweden and Piet Oudolf offer inspirational garden design insights .

To reinforce the message to visitors to The LANDSCAPE Show, Q Lawns will have on their stand approximately 40 native species of butterflies, plus the migratory Painted Lady, in a special viewing dome with Meadow Mat growing on the floor to keep them supplied with nectar.

Our membership prides itself on being open and inclusive, and since its establishment over 18 years ago, membership numbers have grown steadily.

Q Lawns will also be showing its Environmat Sedum Matting designed to provide green roofs. All the products are grown on the company’s own 1065 hectare farm at Hockwold near Thetford in Norfolk.

As a full member and chairman of the association, I appreciate first-hand the value of having a network of garden design colleagues to engage with and share ideas, expertise, experience and industry information. Added to that, the GLDA’s active social calendar, which includes a number of visits each year, its ongoing programme of in-house professional development workshops and other events, have all contributed greatly to the sense of ownership and responsibility members share for the continued welfare of their association. We are proud supporters of LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September and look forward to catching up with members and potential new members there.

Architectural Heritage Missing the world cup boat completely, Architectural Heritage will be presenting a stained glass panel of the “Three Lions” and a rare 17th century fireback with the coat of arms of Bristol, with extension panels - a very interesting fact to a very small number of people!

Also on show at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park will be various garden ornaments - to sit on they will have a fine well stamped Coalbrookdale “Lily of the Valley” cast iron seat, a curved 19th and a straight slat back games seat, a fine carved marble bench with as much carving as is possible and a couple of modern seats for a more contemporary look. For planters they will have a French stone planter, a pair of fine early 20th century large lead urns and a set of four smaller versions, and continuing in the lead vein a cistern from the 1930’s pretending to be from the 1780s. They will have some weathered marble lions and Portland stone lion fragment remounted on a marble column, a single 19th century urn from Sweden made by the company that eventually coalesced into Volvo (did you know that Volvo gave away the rights to their safety belt to the world). All these and more intriguing facts available from Architectural Heritage at LANDSCAPE this September.

Quercus

Quercus’ British hand-made and designed solid oak hardwood fencing is made in Somerset. It requires no preservative or treatments and will weather naturally & outlast other fences. Due to Quercus’ patented open weave design, its fence panels are wind proof, allowing the wind to pass through without damage. They also allow light through and so avoid creating dense shade for the plants. This is demonstrated in a recent testimonial from Jacquetta Menzies MSGD MBALI of Jacquetta Menzies Landscape and Garden Design about a recent project in Pott Shrigley, Cheshire. Right on the edge of the Peak District, at 200 m the site is very exposed to westerly gales and rain. “The Quercus fence was erected in January 2012. The oak has weathered to a beautiful grey, toning in perfectly with the gritstone walls. Gales last winter took away a fruit cage in a more sheltered part of the garden, but the Quercus Fence withstood the storms with no damage. My clients are extremely pleased” Come and see the Quercus range for yourself at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park

Smart Fire UK mainly work with architects, interior designers and landscapers to achieve their vision for the perfect outdoor fire feature. This can either come from their beautiful outdoor range of fireboxes and burners which can create a fantastic focal point for your garden. An example of this was used by Christine Wilkie garden design and entered into the modern garden designs category of a recent competition where it won first place. Our BK5 burner was also used by Fisher Tomlin & Bowyer for their garden entered at the RHS show at Hampton Court contributing to the silver – gilt medal won by the garden. The Burners are very flexible and all our outdoor range can be brought inside in the winter to provide year round use.

IFLA 2014 IFLA Europe Silver Jubilee Twenty-five years ago, ten European professional landscape architects met in Vilvoorde (Belgium) to create the European Foundation for Landscape Architecture (EFLA) inspired from the international experience they had witnessed, in 1948 with the creation of the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA), and who believed that our way of perceiving and understanding the world –derived from our profession- could contribute to its development. The European Foundation for Landscape Architecture has since then grown up and changed in many different ways. One of the changes being its name which from “European Foundation for Landscape Architecture” (EFLA) moved to “European Federation for Landscape Architecture” and finally to “IFLA Europe” further to a “Coming Together” agreement between IFLA and EFLA turning the organisation into the European region of the International Federation of Landscape Architects. Today, we celebrate IFLA Europe Silver Jubilee as a recognition of landscape architects unceasing work. A rich complexity of the landscape mosaic characterising their work, which deals with nature and culture, and considers man and society the focus of their beliefs. IFLA strive to establish the importance of all matters relating to landscape and landscape architecture as the physical, socio-economic, cultural, visual, conceptual and spatial context of our European communities and their holistic vision demands we establish, support, and promote the landscape architectural profession across Europe, contributing to international discourse, shaping and disseminating European initiatives, facilitating the exchange of information, whilst promoting excellence in professional practice, education and research culminating in a culturally rich, diverse and sustainable Europe. IFLA are proud to support LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September.

FIRST STEPS TO A SUCCESSFUL GARDEN DESIGN CAREER

One of the first things that many potential garden design students will ask themselves is what’s the potential for a career in garden design? It’s an important question to ask because, like with any new career, you need to be absolutely sure that you’re heading in the right direction. But whilst you may get the support of your family and friends when you start a garden design course by the time you’ve graduated they might be so used to your new direction that you’re faced with a lot of choices on your own. So what are these garden design career choices? First and foremost the majority of students aim to be setting up there own businesses if not straightaway then within a year or two of graduating. For many this can be a daunting task but a good design course will already be setting you up with both the tools and the contacts to hit the ground running. If you’re setting up your business as soon as you graduate then look around to see if there are any people who might help mentor you. The Society of Garden Designers runs a mentoring service for student members so this might help but you might find that you have a person within your social network with great business skills. They may not be involved in gardens but it’s the objective business expertise you’re looking for and someone outside of the industry might give you a new angle to market yourself.

Andrew Fisher Tomlin checks out the first hurdles on the garden design career ladder.

A real bonus is to get a work placement with an established designer. Sometimes this might be possible through your garden design course but remember that most design companies are small businesses and taking on a work placement designer is a big deal for them. You need to offer something that compliments their busy day to day schedule. Offering a one day a week helping hand is more trouble than its worth. A two week stint helping them out in a busy period will be much more useful as they can put you on to one project and whether is drawing up a design or setting out plants on site you’ll get a nugget of first hand practical information that will reveal some great ways to do business. What you can offer an established designer is of primary importance when applying for a job. And despite being a profession of small businesses there are jobs to be had. Larger design firms often have a regular turnover of your newly qualified staff and landscape companies are increasingly looking to add a design function to their services.

Top of the list for skills these days is an ability to produce great 3D models. So you should start thinking about embracing and using those skills as soon as you get them on your design course. If you are still to decide on a course check that the studio tutorials will include CAD specialists both as lecturers and in your studio time so that you develop skills quickly. Depending where you are and your role you could be paid anything from £9 to £25 an hour so you need to think if the experience on lower pay is worth it. With a great designer with real skills to pass on then it just might be. But don’t ever work for nothing, you’ll have no enthusiasm on a dark winter morning to go to work and that’s not going to get you a great reference. The most important skill you can have is perseverance. Like any new career these days you need to be prepared to put the time and hard work in to make it work. Launch your career with good, targeted networking. Get on LinkedIn, use your own social networks and business contacts. Help out a designer at a show when they need that extra help (and you might just do this for free), make yourself useful. The most successful young designers use every opportunity whether its entering every competition that comes their way or going to evening landscape events where they may meet a new contractor or a supplier that just happens to know someone that needs a garden designing. Always get paid for a job, you’re a professional now, but be prepared to balance that with great contacts, good development and with an eye to the future. Andrew Fisher Tomlin is a Director of the London College of Garden Design and will be hosting four Masterclasses at the LANDSCAPE Show in September.

To ensure the range of species, the quality and variation in size that users of Barcham Trees have come to expect it is necessary and will continue to be necessary to import trees from across the world. This is part of their service. However, bio- security is a real and ever present issue that all users of trees must face and take action on. At Barcham they believe it cannot be left to the authorities to take a lead but requires all individuals and companies to be responsible for their own actions. Barcham Trees will NOT import trees and sell to customers for immediate planting into the UK landscape. All imported trees are held on the nursery for one full growing season during which time they are subjected to rigorous inspection for pest and disease. This includes systematic and regular DEFRA visits to the nursery. In addition to the routine pest and disease control programme implemented on the nursery over 15,000 trees across the entire species range are annually, randomly and independently examined for physiological health using leaf fluorescence, chlorophyll content and cell electrolyte leakage. This report is published and available for public inspection.

Barcham Trees

At Barcham Trees they focus on the production of high quality young trees. Many of them are grown from seeds or cuttings collected by their team from veteran UK specimens.

Perennial The Landscaper The Landscaper has been published every month since 1999. From a modest 32 page magazine it has developed into a 68 page perfect bound title. It is the only monthly trade magazine with an ABC audited circulation and a readership in excess of 14,000. Our readers include all members of the APL and BALI and landscaping companies throughout the UK. The secret of the magazines success is succinct, all- round reporting closely linked to the seasons and the weather - plus the fact that the readers know it is independent of all trade associations manufacturers or suppliers. They investigate everything that can interest today’s landscaper from horticulture, statues, garden furniture and artificial grass to compact tractors, excavators, fertilizer and aggregates. The magazine is now published by Curtis Media Ltd – a small independent publishing house with specialist knowledge of the landscaping industry. “Because the Landscaper is our only concern, the title will benefit from increased inward investment which will translate into improved editorial, more editorial pages and an increased promotional budget,” says Curtis. David Curtis will be available to speak to as part of the ‘Meet The Media’ opportunity at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

The collaboration between garden designer, occupational charity and the horticulture industry has been richly rewarded today as Perennial celebrated winning a Silver-Gilt Medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show after welcoming Her Majesty The Queen at the evening Gala. Her Majesty was very interested in the work of the charity and that of its landscaping partners for the event, Streetscape (a social enterprise that encourages long-term unemployed to train as horticulturists). Granted royal status in 1851 by Queen Victoria, Perennial (formerly known as The Gardeners’ Royal Benevolent Society) is the only UK charity dedicated to helping all horticulturists in times of crisis. It has marked its 175th anniversary at the show with a wonderful exhibit in the Great Pavilion. Perennial’s Patron HRH Princess Alexandra also visited, as did Princess Beatrice. Designed by Jo Thompson the garden at Chelsea this year was been made possible with help, advice and donated plants and materials from some industry stalwarts. Speaking at the show, Alan Titchmarsh, President of Perennial, said: “It is fitting that the exhibit designed to mark this unique charity’s 175th anniversary has been possible thanks to partnership, friendship and goodwill from across the horticulture industry. Richard Capewell, Chief Executive at Perennial, says: “We have so many people to thank for their help. The visit by The Queen really was the icing on the cake – we are all very proud to be associated with this great charity that offers a lifeline to those working in and retired from horticulture.” Please come along and meet Perennial at the LANDSCAPE Show this September in Battersea Park and find out more about their work.

Angus started in the landscaping business at Royal Hospital Chelsea, the now infamous site of the Chelsea Flower show in 1986. By 1987 the beginnings of Scotscape were formulating as Angus worked as a self-employed horticulturalist. 1996 saw the naming of the business as we know it now and Scotscape has gone from strength to strength as a multidisciplinary landscape construction company with distinct divisions offering Commercial Landscaping, Domestic Landscaping, Living wall and Green roof specialist construction and maintenance, irrigation and landscape maintenance. Our client list is impressive including Berkeley Group, Barrett Homes, The Olympic Venue, TFL, M&S, Westfield and the Rubens Hotel – many years of hard work and a continued passion for good horticulture have led Scotscape to be a multi-million pound business with Angus Cunningham still at the helm of this inspiring company. Boot & Co. As part of Boot & Co.’s commitment to provide a wide pallet of low maintenance, environmentally enhancing plants to their customers, they have trailed and selected their ‘Fleur Robuste’ range of perennials, plus a range of landscape roses, shrubs and trees.

Perennial varieties have been selected for their dense weed supressing evergreen or semi evergreen foliage; long period of colour and in many cases valuable nectar for flying insects. Boot & Co.’s major market sector is supplying Local Authorities in The Netherlands where great emphasis is placed on enhancing densely populated city areas, by careful planting of colourful low maintenance plants, to the benefit of residents and wildlife. Boot & Co.’s Fleur Robuste concept has been used successfully too in the UK, Germany, Poland, and elsewhere in Europe. Most plants above are planted at 12 x 9cm pot plants per square meter, a relatively inexpensive option. Within one year of planting expect a continuous ground covering foliage. Once established the only maintenance required is an annual clipping to remove dead flower heads and foliage. Visit Boot & Co. at the LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park this September and ask for their ‘A New Generation of Colourful Perennials’ booklet.

Khora Spaces The Khôra Dome is the excitingly original contemporary steel and curved glass garden room which made its international debut earlier this year at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, winning 5 gold stars and the RHS Director General’s Award for the Best Trade Stand.

The creation of British engineer and designer Louis Calmels, whose family metalwork business has been making high quality, custom-built architectural, garden and other metalwork structures for more than 50 years, the Dome’s inspiration comes from the iconic Palm House at Kew Gardens. While the Khôra Dome captures the essence of the pioneering Victorian original, it is totally adapted for modern day living, employing the latest in glass technology and engineering skills. Louis Calmels explains; “Glass structures are as much to do with what’s outside as they are the space within, hence the name Khōra which comes from ancient Greek. I feel the Dome reflects this ethereal imagery as it encapsulates both exterior and interior. It makes the most stunning garden room as it is light and airy in the day and then at night transforms into a spectacular magical bubble!” Come and talk to Louis on his stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Wildflower Turf

If you are thinking about creating a wildflower garden, understanding the difference between annual or perennial wildflowers is essential. An annual wildflower, such as a poppy, cosmos or cornflower is a one hit wonder, a total show off. It has to put all of its energy into being the very best signpost for pollination and its chance to produce seed as it does not have a parent plant. It only gets one chance, at the end of flowering, its life is over. Key characteristics are often bold colour and a prolonged flowering season. The seed produced then sits dormant and if the area is reworked to produce a tilth you may then get another similar display the following year but there is no guarantee. Perennial wild flowers, such as vetches and scabious, are alive throughout the year and to a certain extent have to save up energy to survive through the winter. The flowering season can be shorter and colours are generally subtle. Probably more important for larger areas, the perennials will provide a green base for the whole of the year. Their root bed tends to be thicker and deeper in the soil and if untouched it is harder for weeds to penetrate once established.

Thrive Ketley Brick Ketley Brick is excited to be launching their new range of quarry tiles at the LANDSCAPE Show in September. The stunning range of natural clay colours is available in both square and rectangular tiles, all with incredibly low water absorption and excellent frost resistance. The Ketley Brick Company was founded over 100 years ago and specialises in the manufacture of Staffordshire Clay bricks, slips and pavers. Ketley’s products have always been known for their quality and durability. This new range of quarry tiles offers excellent slip resistance and gives architects and landscape designers the opportunity to incorporate the natural beauty and surface quality of true clay fired colour into a variety of both interior and exterior spaces. The company also offer a range of matching fittings such as bullnose and ribbed nosings. Come and talk to them on their stand at LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park.

Thrive is the leading charity in the UK using gardening to bring about positive changes in the lives of people living with disabilities or ill health, or who are isolated, disadvantaged or vulnerable. The process is called social and therapeutic horticulture – put simply it is working with plants to improve physical and psychological health, along with communication and thinking skills. The charity uses the garden as a safe and secure environment in which to develop an individual’s ability to socialise, make friends, and gain practical skills that make them more independent and self-reliant. According to Thrive’s Alyson Chorley, gardening can benefit everyone, regardless of age or ability. “We help older people, and people who have had strokes to improve their mobility by getting their muscles moving. Gardening also improves mental health by providing a sense of purpose and achievement. It’s a very social activity and can reduce feelings of isolation and low mood – making friends is easy for some, but for others it is really difficult and having a shared interest can really help.” Thrive is looking for support – both financial and practical – at each of its four centres in London, Reading, Birmingham and Gateshead. If you can help, please take time to visit them at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park. www.thrive.org.uk

Hilliers

The LANDSCAPE Show spoke to Andy McIndoe from Hilliers about his lecture at the show in Battersea Park this September.

Come and listen to Andy at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park, copies of his book will also be available during his ‘Meet The Author’ opportunity too.

Andy said, “I’ve called the session ‘Essential plants for creative landscapes’. Don’t expect the rare, the unusual or the trendy. Expect plants that succeed and deliver a striking effect throughout the year. No fussy, fragile subjects here. I want to talk about performers, and most of the plants I feature will be shrubs.

Shrubs are much more than just hard-working structure plants. By choosing the right combination of shape, colour and texture, a group of shrubs can be mellow, uplifting, calming or indulgent. You can create any style from country garden to contemporary urban courtyard, from seaside cottage to tropical paradise.

See us at LANDSCAPE

If you choose the right ones, shrubs are hard working garden plants that can give enduring pleasure throughout the seasons, and with little maintenance. Most perennials need lifting and dividing, annuals need replacing every year, trees can get too big, but the right shrubs delight for decades.

Most designers and gardeners choose plants for their individual merits, often for their colour, texture and form. That is only part of the story: performance and subsequent maintenance requirements are even more important. In my new book, The Creative Shrub Garden, I show you how to create stunning, long lasting planting effects using shrubs, whatever the size of your garden or the situation. In addition to a directory, which gives you a palette of three hundred high performance shrubs and everything you need to know about planting, pruning, feeding and watering, I show you how to take three shrubs which work together to create a particular mood or style of planting. This initial combination is suitable for the smallest garden and in many cases pots in a courtyard or a balcony. I then tell you what to add to expand the scheme for a larger, and a much larger garden. Obviously in gardens these are often planted in singles, but the numbers are easily multiplied for larger areas. “

Matthew Keightley Newcomer Matthew’s Keightley (29), of Maidenhead-based building and landscaping firm Farr and Roberts’, scooped the prestigious People’s Choice award for his debut ‘Hope on the Horizon’ garden, designed in aid of Help for Heroes at the world famous RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2014.

Inspired by his brother Mike, currently serving his fifth tour of Afghanistan with the RAF, and the inspirational work of charity Help for Heroes, the garden sympathetically echoed the Helo for Heroes ethos; to inspire, enable and support those returning heroes during their recovery and beyond.

Matthew said: “It’s just incredible. I am absolutely thrilled to receive the People’s Choice award. It is such an honour, and amazing to have such fantastic public support” said Matthew. “We’ve had people coming over and telling us how much they love the garden all week, but I never anticipated we would actually win” he adds.

Matthew is one of the featured speakers at this years LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park this September.

The garden, designed in the shape of the Military Cross, the medal awarded for extreme bravery. It represents the complex and progressive path of recovery experienced by our wounded, injured and sick military personnel, veterans and their families. “To receive this award demonstrates just how much the public really understand what the garden represents and the journey that our soldiers go through on their individual paths to recovery”.

Beemat

Britain’s bees are facing a bleak future. Over 50% of bees in the United Kingdom have been lost through disease, loss of habitat and intensive farming. Research shows that planting wild flowers is crucial to the survival of bees. But doing this on a large scale can prove problematic, with weeds often taking over. A solution is, however, at hand. BeeMat is new from the experts at TerraSeed, and developed with the Stockbridge Technology Centre. A pre-seeded, biodegradable growing mat that controls weeds, BeeMat™ is the best way to establish the plants that provide nectar and pollen for bees, especially when other food sources have run out or are scarce in the landscape.

“We know that beneficial species of plants are easily out-competed by grass and other weeds and need some help,” explained Nigel Clarke, BeeMat Sales Manager. “So BeeMat™ is designed to help seedlings by suppressing weeds during establishment. In fact during the trials we carried out in 2012, we proved that BeeMat™ increased the number of flowers that establish by 90%, compared to direct seeded plots, plus it has been shown to increase the number of flowers per plant by 40%. For further product and stockist more information please visit their stand at the LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park this September.

STIHL, Skanska and the CITB have joined forces to develop a new training course for the safer use of petrol driven cut-off saws (disccutters). An important part of cutting is to use the available products to ensure cutting can be done quickly, accurately and safely and not just rely on ‘free hand’ cutting. Brickworker has worked with STIHL in the development of their Brick Jigs, which make the cutting of block pavers quicker, more accurate and safer. After the initial set-up which takes just a few seconds, there is no need for measuring or judging angles, the blocks can simply be held in position and cut accurately and safely every time. For the landscaper cutting paving slabs, Brickworker has launched the Slab Cutting Guide. This attaches easily to the slab in any required position and give the person cutting a guide to follow instead of a line. This makes cutting easier and safer and importantly allows the cut to be made with water for dust suppression. With the use of a Slab Cutting Guide you can consider taking the cutting out of your own time and into the hands of any competent assistant landscaper knowing the cut will be straight and exactly where you want it.

Come and see them at the LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park this September and talk to them about training and how cutting is made simpler and safer.

Handspring also makes bespoke curved benches – with infinite configuration possibilities - to compliment the Apple perfectly.

These products are promoted through four distinct collections: Signature, Simplicity, Sustainable and Streetwise. ESF sources many products locally and from overseas, with the Signature Collection being developed in conjunction with mmcité from the Czech Republic who they will be exhibiting with at The LANDSCAPE Show 2014. One of mmcité’s more popular products in the UK would be their Portiqoa park bench. The perfect bench for those who love smart shapes. Its softly curved sides are made of aluminium alloy which work together with diagonally constructed walls to create an exciting optical illusion. The bench touches the base with only a narrow edge and from some angles reveals some impossibly thin lines. The continuous lamella frame arches to below the seat so as to significantly strengthen the entire structure. Individually shaped armrests placed in the middle prevent anyone from lying down, just as the pair of armrests on either side make it easy to get up.

The sideboard is made from machined castings from aluminium alloy; the saddle and armrest of the lamella are from solid wood. An original and solidly-fixed footing above the pavement is anchored to the ground. Come and see them for yourself on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Todd Longstaffe-Gowan See us at LANDSCAPE

On the 25th June 2014 HRH The Countess of Wessex officially opened the new Royal Kitchen Garden at Hampton Court Palace. The one-acre walled garden lies in the former early c16th Tiltyard - within a stone’s throw of the Tudor kitchens – and is the first productive garden at the palace for over 170 years. Designed for Historic Royal Palaces by Todd Longstaffe-Gowan and his colleague James Fox in collaboration with the Gardens and Estate Team at Hampton Court Palace, the garden evokes a part of the former six-acre kitchen garden as it would have been during the reign of George II. The primary source for the layout and the distribution of the planting has been John Rocque’s plan of 1736, and the aim has been to create a fully working kitchen garden including assorted garden ephemera and tools from the period. Todd Longstaffe-Gowan is a landscape architect and historian, is President of the London Parks and Gardens Trust and Gardens Adviser to Historic Royal Palaces (with responsibilities at six royal palaces including Hampton Court, Kensington, and the Tower of London), and Landscape Adviser to the Crown Estate Paving Commission in Regent’s Park. He is the author of several books including The London Town Garden (Yale UP, 2001), The Gardens and Parks at Hampton Court Palace (Frances Lincoln, 2005) and The London Square: gardens in the midst of town (Yale UP, 2012). His recently redesigned the gardens at Kensington Palace to mark the Diamond Jubilee of HM The Queen. Florfit - - Garaia The City of Barcelona has just announced that it will be using the Garaia Florfit system for 2015. Since trialing the system on a principal roundabout on ‘Las Ramblas’ in Barcelona, where the beds planted in spring of 2014 are still flourishing, the City Council have decided to extend the use of the Florfit system to other parts of the city. By creating beds of more resistant species, in this case allowing the beds to be in place for more than two years, the aim is to reduce planting times and to make maintenance easier in difficult and problematic planting areas. Florfit facilitates easier work on complicated beds and planting areas by using a system to identify the individual parts to allow the creation of mosaics and made-to-measure forms. This simplification of the method has allowed us to create complex planting areas and beds. It also significantly reduces the working time required for difficult-to-access planting areas. The system has given a proven 75% reduction in labour time. Come and talk to Garaia on their stand at LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September.

The garden, which was called ‘From the Moors to the Sea’ was a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Britain in Bloom and of Alan’s own 50 years in horticulture.

The garden itself was split into two distinct areas, a raised upper section of moorland with wild turf and flowers, native hedging and Pine and Birch trees linked by a gently meandering stream to a lower coastal section where nature has been tamed to create a private haven. Palms and large shrubs provided privacy and some shade against the rocky backdrop and a small beach hut created shelter and a place to sit and reflect. Alan Titchmarsh, said: ‘Kate Gould is one of this country’s most accomplished young garden designers and I am delighted to be working with her on a garden at Chelsea Flower Show. Her skill, style and refreshing approach to landscaping have been of tremendous value, and our partnership in this venture has demonstrated our joint commitment to artistic flair, originality of concept and quality of finish. I can think of no-one I would rather have worked alongside.’

Kate who has recently teamed up with a local bloom group in Hertfordshire enjoyed the project “I was surprised and honoured to be asked by the RHS to work on a garden with Alan Titchmarsh who has always been an inspiration both in terms of his approach to horticulture and to people. I thoroughly enjoyed working alongside him to bring this exciting garden to life. Britain in Bloom is a fabulous organization that unites communities in beautifying their shared spaces. That’s something we’d all like to see more of”. Kate Gould is one of the featured speakers at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

inspired me and started to develop wearable musical instruments with scientists, using motion sensors to map the movement of the wearer to different sounds. I was later approached by the Centre for Digital Music at Queen Mary University of London, to be artist in residence at the School of Electrical Engineering, and design new sonic instruments with their students. I love my job!

Tell us about the inspiration for your project… During a residency at Eyebeam Centre for Art and Technology, in New York City, I was often drawn to the Brooklyn Bridge in search of inspiration. I became struck by the sounds that I could hear as I sat there- the clonking of footsteps on the wooden walkway (which reminded me of a giant glockenspiel), the whirring of bicycles, the drone of the traffic from below and sound of voices of the visitors as they walked by. It was at this point that I noticed the bridge reminded me of a giant harp and that all of these ‘journey sounds’ were resonating through its steel cables. Inspired, I began wondering if I could collaborate with scientists and musicians to develop a clip-on instrument that would enable pedestrians to play the bridge like a giant harp. The project involves several technical instruments, have you always had an interest and background in technology and sound? In 2004 I left my job as a fashion designer to explore the field of wearable technology. I was invited to The Banff Centre in Canada to collaborate with a team of engineers and develop a dress that could map the wearer’s gesture and emotional states to different soundscapes. This was the start of a new adventure in the world of research and a completely new way of thinking – I was addicted.Residencies followed in Montreal, Rotterdam, Boston and New York City. My projects involved wearable technologies that triggered light, movement and sound. I quickly realised that sound was the area that

How do you start making a wearable harp? Human Harp was inspired by reoccurring sketches that I drew of a woman attached to the Brooklyn Bridge via colourful musical strings. I liked the idea of the body connecting to architectural space in a really visual way. In my mind, these chords were an extension of the bridge’s cables, they were also a visual and sculptural representation of sound- enabling the user (or movician) to control pitch, intensity and volume of the vibrations as he or she lengthens, shortens and twangs the chords. I invented the term movician to describe the user of the harp - a hybrid artist who explores sound through expressive physical movement. We used these early sketches to develop the retractable string sound controller that was later tested on the Brooklyn Bridge. Tell us about the first Human Harp performance. In September 2012 I discovered that the 130th anniversary of the Brooklyn Bridge was imminent. I approached Mark Plumbley at the Centre for Digital Music, Queen Mary University of London, to see if they would help me develop an instrument that would ‘play’ the Brooklyn Bridge. They agreed and a London team was gathered, with a mission to develop eight string sound-controllers in time for the anniversary. Because of the tight deadline we split the design questions up between researchers at Queen Mary and the students at Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design. The day before the anniversary, dancer Hollie Miller and I packed the sound-controllers into our suitcase and headed to NYC. There we were met by Kathleen Flood from Intel’s Creators Project, who made a documentary describing our aspirations to transform the Brooklyn Bridge into a giant harp. We then spent the 130th anniversary of the Brooklyn Bridge filming Hollie on the bridge demonstrating and exploring the Human Harp.

The Creators Project documentary amassed 370,000 hits on Youtube and we received media attention from around the globe. Your next project will celebrate the 150th birthday of The Clifton Suspension Bridge, what do you plan for that? Working with musicians, dancers and scientists in the Bristol area, we plan to transform Clifton Suspension Bridge into a giant harp to celebrate the bridge’s anniversary and the opening of a new Visitor Centre in March 2015. We will develop the technology for the instrument and also ideas for the performance and composition through workshops on the bridge throughout 2014. So far we have managed to record the different frequencies running through the bridge’s hangers, or cables. These sounds will then be played by movicians who will use the retractable string sound-controllers attached to the bridge’s cables to release the deep rumbling murmur of Brunel’s iconic landmark. Each bridge structure is very different; does this mean the instruments used and performances will also differ? Each bridge has its own structural personality, which means the sound will differ dramatically from bridge to bridge. In Bristol, for example, we have already started working with civil engineers who are researching the bridge’s vibrations caused by wind, traffic and pedestrians. We have discovered that the frequencies on the Clifton Suspension Bridge differ dramatically to those of Tower Bridge. This will mean that we will need to create bespoke ways to capture the sounds of each bridge in response to their unique structures. Our performances are also tailored to the individual story of each bridge, drawing inspiration for the composition from its history, as well as local people’s memories and connections to the structure.

WORDS: DAVID MORRIS — IMAGES: © MARCUS PEEL — DRAWINGS: © JONH DOLAN

What comes next for the Human Harp, and what are your own future plans? We have been approached by different communities both in the UK and abroad to play their bridges. Before setting off on a global tour of other suspension bridges our main focus is to make the harp sound-controllers more robust and versatile, so that the Human Harp is intuitive, enjoyable and inspiring both to play and to watch. De Brabander Streets made out of bricks last decades, if not centuries. Bricks are a very environmentally friendly product, bricks are made out of a variety of clays, a product created by nature itself. During the process of baking, the bricks get their pure colours trough the combination of heat and oxygen. Over the years a special patina coating envelops the bricks. This process causes the bricks to get a worn out look, which creates a very pretty and timeless character. Joop Bardoel has passion for bricks in every fibre of his being. Joop knows all of the varieties and how each and every one of them can be implemented in public space. This love and passion has developed itself since his 14th birthday, when he started working during vacations in one of the oldest brick baking factories in the Netherlands. The scents, the baking process, the variety of colours, Joop knows them all. This knowledge allows him to be able to determine what variety of brick is best suited and the prettiest for the job. All according to the wishes of the landscaping architects and developers of the urban environment of course. Do you wish to be able to make your project shine and have that unique atmosphere that you have been looking for? Martha Schwartz

Once a vibrant and active urban plaza, the Place de la RĂŠpublique plaza has recently been crushed by the demands of modern mobility. Each day the site hosts over 114 000 subway commuters and a complicated array of tourist buses, parked taxis, cyclists, car traffic, municipal bus routes, which have reduced it to a congested, fractured, and unsafe transitional space that has lost its local character and urban significance. The team at Martha Schwartz proposed to restore the civic relevance to the plaza by improving its ability to sustain a moving population, while providing a reason to linger to a non-moving one. By unifying the disparate parts of the site and redirecting vehicular traffic away and around the central core, they have reclaimed a large functional surface that can support a range of activities and urban programs. Everything is designed for maximum. Embedded infrastructure and variable spatial arrangements allow the plaza to seamlessly transition from urban boulevard to weekend market to evening market to Christmas market from rock concert to film festival to summer festival to winter iceskating rink. Residents, commuters and tourists will be able to return day after day, year after year looking for new ways to experience the space and to relive old ones.

This is a sustainable city space. A space that continues to support the needs of an ever-changing urban population, that is endlessly adaptable, that integrates evolving urban transportation demands, and that continues to provide wonderful experiences to its visitors. Martha Schwartz is one of this years featured speakers at LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September.

Tim Gosling Tim Gosling lives to design. He is passionate about architecture, interiors, furniture and the arts and has a unique ability to combine all these disciplines in his work. Having started his career in Theatre design, Tim has a natural ability to infuse an element of drama in his creations and this, coupled with his meticulous attention to detail results in a perfect performance. Tim was delighted when his long term client Lord Browne asked him to collaborate with world-renowned landscape and garden designer, Andy Sturgeon. Sturgeon has worked on gardens all around the world, from tiny roof terraces to larger rambling estates. Collaboration between Tim and Andy was the perfect match. Lord Brown’s house in Cheyne Walk has a stunning London garden and Andy’s brief was to base the colour of the garden on a Vermeer painting. In the same way Tim drew inspiration from the multi disciplined Japanese contemporary artist, Hiroshi Sugimoto and designed furniture based on a photograph of a waxwork museum that recreates Vermeer Paintings. These two inspirations united the interior and exterior just as the client had requested.

The curves and movement of the walls created a wonderful opportunity for picturesque garden lighting. For Gosling it was the opportunity to work with design elements that transverse inside and out and to be able to have this discussion at the beginning of the project enabled the perfect collaboration. Since the completion of the London 2012 Olympics work on the former Athletes Village has continued to turn the area into the East Village complex for its legacy life, this incorporates the refurbishment of the apartment blocks and adjustment of the hard landscaped areas.

Addscape became involved through the sub-contractor PJ Carey who were struggling to find someone to import the benches with all the finished details in a timescale to fit with their programme of works. The benches needed stainless steel lettering and timber slats to one side. The site required 4 benches each made up of 2 pieces of granite. Working with their European partner Ignea, Addscape provided a budget cost and lead time for the benches, once an order had been secured they then produced manufacturing drawings for each element for approval, and once approved Addscape & Ignea supplied the benches complete with timber slats to site within 3 weeks from the date of order, with the stainless steel lettering following a few weeks later to be fitted on site. The benches were matched against other granite material already supplied and the result was a resounding success in terms of both timescale and quality of product supplied. Come and talk to both Addscape and Ignea on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Newbury Town Council has undertaken a project to improve and enhance Victoria Park for the benefit of the local community. The Park provides a well-used and valuable green space within easy reach of the town centre. It provides a variety of park facilities for the local community and visitors and is of great social important to Newbury. The Council required a means of offering temporary power supply for events held in the park. In order to enhance the events space around the bandstand an unobtrusive method of supply electrical power was required. For safety reasons it was necessary that the sockets should be enclosed while in use. There was an existing water supply which the Council wished to maintain for use in this part of the Park. Charles Endirect, working with their supply partner GIFAS Electric, proposed that the Campetto Floor Pit would fit the specification perfectly as this product is designed for the distribution of electrical power, compressed air and water. The Campetto was specified with the required number of sockets and a water supply. The GIFAS floor pits are constructed from stainless steel and are designed to be used with the lid in the closed position once connection is made, providing a safe environmental for the general public. The use of solid rubber distribution boards, and gas pistons means that the system is completely maintenance free. The Floor Pit was ordered manufactured, delivered and successfully installed in time for the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations in the Park. Come and talk to GIFAS about your requirements on their stand at LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September.

Poppyhead Consultancy Poppyhead are a landscape design practice based in Manchester who are in the process of completing another contemporary roof terrace project, this one in the Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham.

Liz Ackerley from Poppyhead Consultancy is one of the featured speakers at this years LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park this September.

The scheme is a 70m2 retrofit with views of the new Birmingham Library, across the city and beyond. Adjacent to the canal, this is a funky urban pad with grey metal and orange brickwork as predominant features. The theme for this scheme is opposites and the clients wanted to divide the space into areas for different uses. This theme of opposites is taken into the colour of the hard and soft landscaping, picking up on the orange and the blue. One side of the terrace is bordered by imposing ivy screens that provide a third dimension and privacy. We have incorporated a polished steel water wall on the facing orange wall, providing a great focal point from the living space and an area for sitting and enjoying a glass of wine. Huge, grey-blue planters divide the areas with a bespoke seating and orange-resin and steel table area with fantastic views across the city and beyond on the other side of the terrace. The scheme mixes two surfaces: Porcelain tiles and composite deck, with uplighters in the tiles and to light the water feature and planting. The planting softens the overall scheme considerably bringing height, light and movement. Amelanchier, Anementhale, Nandina, Achillea, Hemerocallis and Heuchera species provide orange tones in the planting whilst Helictotrichon, Pinus, Lavandula, Geranium and Aster species provide the blues.

Jacksons Fencing

Probst

Construction work in the downtown core is always inconvenient for the public and business owners. Therefore, fast and efficient completion of the work is in everyone’s best interests. Tools and machines on which one can rely play a key role in this regard. During restoration of the downtown core in Oberstenfeld (Germany), the paving company Bercher & Malejko used the new Probst Easygrip EXG Border Stone Handle to lay the granite kerbstones.

With their hectic schedule of summer shows entering a slightly quieter period, Jacksons new publication of the Additions to the Good Fencing Guide range is now available.

Due to heavy use of the Großbottwarer Straße in the Oberstenfeld downtown core, the porphyry stone cobbled footpaths were showing considerable signs of wear. The street was re-paved, broadened to 6 meters and bordered with granite flagstone and large granite kerb stones. The Portuguese granite is sawn and bush hammered, giving it flat surfaces which also provide good grip.

It has 24 pages of various products, new, or newish to Jacksons, that they have gathered together in one cover, so they can be sure you see them all and don’t miss anything. The mini brochure has an interesting list of contents: Retreat garden shelters, Car Ports with various shaped roofs. Without giving too much away the new improved version of their wheelie bin store adds an extra unit with shelves to cope with the vast array of recycling boxes we seem to have these days.

The 12 kg light Probst Easygrip EXG Border Stone Handle grab performed extremely well during the construction work, thanks to its tremendous load capacity and ease of use. In addition to granite kerb stones, the mechanical grab also transports border stones, slabs, block steps and kerb stones with a weight of up to 550 kg with ease.

Why not pick up your copy on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

The Rubber Company have recently completed another “RubbaGrass® Rubber Safety Mat” RubbaGrass installation, at one of the worlds most spectacular theatres, The Minack Theatre in Cornwall. An open air theatre constructed above a gully with a rocky granite outcrop jutting into the sea.

They needed an anti-slip surface to prevent any accidents, they used “RubbaGrass® Rubber Safety Mat” RubbaGrass. This replaced a PVC which they said was “too slippery for pedestrian traffic in wet conditions”. RubbaGrass® is a rubber safety mat manufactured from recycled rubber. The mat is mainly used on grass, hence the name RubbaGrass®, however can be used in many other environments. It is used at ice rinks, ski slopes, pathways, behind bars, usually for its high anti slip properties. This is a safety surfacing product offering soft and safe ground protection unlike the alternate option of PVC which hardens in cold conditions. RubbaGrass’® softness does not fluctuate in a huge range of weather conditions. Come and see the product for yourself on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Scotscape

Working in partnership with designer Mathew Bell, Scotscape has completed the hard and soft landscaping work at PriceWaterhouseCoopers’ head office at 1 Embankment Place, London.

On completion, the development of these five terraces along with other energy saving systems has helped PwC achieve the highest BREEAM rating yet recorded worldwide for an office building.

With around 2,000 employees based at the firm’s prestigious offices, the overall programme of work saw five previously unused terraces being refurbished, all of which provide spectacular views over London. The design brief called for break out areas to be created on each of the terraces, for staff hospitality, work and relaxation. With a high emphasis on the use of recycled materials and the use of fauna attracting plants, the five separate areas have enhanced the bio diversity of the area.

Come and talk to Angus Cunningham, who is one of our featured speakers at this years show, on the Scotscape stand at LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September.

On level two of the building, Scotscape installed a stainless steel wire living wall, with climbing plants established in pots at the base. On level eight, the company installed two large galvanised and powder-coated frames to support pots filled with soil and pre-grown ivy. This helped to green up and screen 50 square meters of vertical wall.

Europlanters

See us at LANDSCAPE

His passion for fibre glass was first discovered whilst making canoes at Uppingham School as a child. 35 years on John Wilkes, Director of Europlanters has gone back to his roots to manufacture planters for a roof top project on the top of the schools new science block ‘Destination Science’ in Uppingham historic village.

The Bursar’s aim for this new 3 storey building is to inspire new generations of young people to see Science as an exciting and attractive subject to study. The roof terrace is just a small part of the £40m project invested to redevelop and transform the school. Specified by Landscape Architect Robert Myers Associates the project consisted of manufacturing and installing 17 planters to build several flower beds ranging from 6765/1875/530 high to 7388 /665/530 mm high. These were put together to fit neatly next to paving stones and contemporary hard wood seating with hidden storage boxes. The colour RAL 9006 was chosen to match the sky lights which the planters fit neatly around and the metallic colour contrasts well with the anodised aluminium used to clad the building. All of which complement the local ironstone colour. A wonderful array of plant varieties were planted by the landscapers including lavandula angustifolia, rosmarinus officinalis, Sedum, salvia officinalis and Pelargonium crispum chosen to ignite the senses and act as a perfect haven to attract wildlife whilst on the roof terrace. The science block is due to open in September 2014 ‘It has been an honour to be involved in this project said John Wilkes It has brought back so many wonderful childhood memories of being a pupil at the school and it is fabulous to see how it has been transformed’. The Wildflower Meadow was planted as part of one of Streetscape’s apprentice recruitment days. Recruitment days are free one-day events where young people who are interested in a career in landscape gardening can come in and work with Streetscapes Head Landscaper on various landscape tasks around Myatt’s Fields Park. At the end of the day, attendees can put themselves up for an apprenticeship. This particular recruitment day was held in March 2014 and the meadow was planted by a team of four recruitment day attendees; one of whom is now one of the four new apprentices that were hired in June! For the Wildflower Meadow, we used the Pastel and Candy annual seed mix. The unknown consistency of this program is unique and includes various functionalities: Curved and straight benches, benches combined with green solutions, bicycle parking, bridges and tree isles. All Rough & Ready products are bound into a separate brochure to communicate the quality and options for the urban planner.

Redfields English Leadwork Many times the garden designer will look to feature a lead trough or planter into a roof scheme but are forced to consider faux lead because of weight. Redfields now use stainless steel strengthening which reduces the weight by 60%, this allows them to create features for roof and window reveals that give the client real lead as they have never before been able to have. This method also allows them to make very large planters that are also very strong. Redfields are top of the class in the production of lead planters/cisterns and water features for the past 20 years. Designers can talk to Redfields to discuss present or future schemes on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Eurobollard The principles behind a garden city are quite simple: the key is to incorporate green spaces and infrastructure that is capable of providing a wide range of environment and quality of life benefits for the local community. It is a place where we spend time with friends and family. The community is at the centre of planning decisions. The benefits of green spaces are well documented and we know that living in places so well designed makes a huge difference to people’s lives. So people feel good, attracting talents into the city.

Their furniture has high corrosion resistance and it is not necessary to apply any type of coating. The stainless steel used is a tough, durable and robust product with minimum maintenance cost and needs only periodic cleaning with soap and water to keep the original finish. It is of course strong, and the mechanical properties of stainless steel allow the use of more slender sections than other materials, reducing weight and cost without compromising strength. It’s also fire resistant and durable. Stainless steel is attractive and also has the advantages of a cost-benefit, considering their long life cycle. The Eurobollard range from Amandio Silva is a modern product, but at the same time promotes environmental values, being ecological and environmental friendly, always ensuring complete customer satisfaction. Perennial More and more people working in the horticulture industry are turning to charity for help when times get tough. In 2013, UK horticulture’s trade charity Perennial helped 15% more people than the previous year, assisting its clients in accessing over £1.5 million in direct financial help. This year, as Perennial celebrates its 175th anniversary, it pledges to raise extra funds to help even more horticulturists and their families during times of crisis. During 2013, Perennial helped a total of 1,221 people. The charity reports that the number of debt clients has been rising steadily year on year, reflecting ongoing economic pressures, with a 17% increase in 2013, following a 25% increase the previous year. Perennial has a dedicated debt advice service, which is currently dealing with over £3 million worth of debt. Among the horticulture professions helped by Perennial during 2013, 68% were directly working in gardening and of these 15% were self-employed. Landscapers accounted for 21% of clients, while the fastest growing category was groundsmen and greenkeepers, who accounted for 23% of new clients and 16% of the total during last year. Nursery people are another growing category and are anticipated to need even more help this year, particularly as a result of recent floods. The remainder was a mix of designers, arboriculturists, market gardeners and garden centre workers. As well as an increase in numbers of people being helped, the increase in complexity of individual cases was also marked during 2013, due to continuing changes to the benefits system and cuts to what people are entitled to. Despite the tightening of benefit criteria, Perennial caseworkers helped their clients to claim £728,000 worth of statutory benefits, compared to £636,000 in 2012. There has been a shift in recent years toward younger people seeking help from Perennial and during 2013, 86% of new clients were under retirement age, while of the total number of clients, 65% were under retirement age.

Perennial provides help and support during traumatic events such as major illness, debt, redundancy, homelessness and bereavement, as well as disability, severe financial difficulty and old age. Originally established as the Gardeners’ Royal Benevolent Fund in 1839, it was re-branded as Perennial in 2003 and now reaches out to people working in all professions within horticulture and their families for life. The help Perennial offers includes financial support, debt advice, help with housing problems, care for the ill or elderly and support for children of horticulturists. Each individual’s circumstances are different, but their contact with Perennial usually begins with a visit from a professionally trained caseworker to help find a solution and offer support for their particular situation. There is no time limit on the help given - Perennial will carry on working with that individual for as long as it takes. All of Perennial’s work depends entirely on voluntary donations from the horticulture industry and the garden-loving public. During its anniversary year, Perennial is encouraging everyone to get involved and raise awareness and funds in order to contribute an additional £175,000 towards its frontline services. To find out more about the work of Perennial and ways to get involved with fundraising, please visit the charity’s stand at LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September.

Aralia

Aralia recently went back to photograph Church Mill Grange, a garden that was completed five years and found that it’s still looking great and still giving the owners a lot of pleasure. Water was a major inspiration for the owners of this Essex garden along with their preference for formal design and clean, contemporary design and structure, so Aralia created two bespoke water features – a raised fish pond and a long narrow rill. This involved removing the lawn to reduce maintenance which the owners readily agreed to. This resulted in a striking contemporary design. The raised fish pond also doubles up as casual seating, and the rill offers a stunningly dramatic feature that stretches the full length of this modern garden. Lines were drawn at 45 degree angles to the house to exaggerate the overall dimensions and give the impression of a much larger looking garden space. The rill was further enhanced by narrow strips of beach pebbles which give a textural border to the granite paving and a nod to a coastal influence. A simple galvanised steel sculpture was included to provide an impactful focal point. The garden also includes a U-shaped raised bed for edible crops and a pleached Hornbeam hedge which provide instant height, screening and drama. Patricia Fox from Aralia is one of the featured speakers at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

QEST

The Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST) is the Royal Warrant Holders Association’s charity, created to fund the education of talented craftsmen and women through traditional college courses, apprenticeships or one-to-one with master craftsmen. Today, QEST has awarded more than £2.4 million to 335 gifted individuals aged between 17 and 50+. It is recognised as having made a major contribution to ensuring the continuation of the pool of talent in the UK and reflects the excellence of British craftsmanship as symbolised by the Royal Warrant of Appointment. Scholarships from £1,000 up to £18,000 are awarded twice a year.

Without QEST none of these skilled artisans would have been able to achieve their potential, the scholarships were awarded at a crucial time in their lives and have enabled them to join the talented ranks of British craftsmen providing bespoke products. Many have become ambassadors for their crafts and are in demand internationally. Please come along to the QEST stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park and talk to them about possibly commissioning a piece.
