Richards dreams up ‘Orchard of Osiris’ project Anne Erickson | NOISE

Peter Richards knows good folk music. Just consider he spent years working as the gallery coordinator at (SCENE) Metrospace in East Lansing, a gig that familiarized him with dozens of creative, expressive bands and singer-songwriters coming through the venue. Now Richards is active in the music world, and he releases a compilation CD on Wednesday called “In the Orchard of Osiris,” which features artists who have almost all played at (SCENE) Metrospace. Stargrazer, Ribbons of Song, Small Houses, Horde of Two and Arms and Sleepers are a few local names on the release. NOISE caught up with Richards to chat about the release show — happening Wednesday, Dec. 8, at Gone Wired Café — and what to expect from this unique compilation. NOISE: Tell me about

your time working at (SCENE) Metrospace. Richards: I coordinated exhibits at (SCENE) from 2006 to 2008, spanning the gallery’s transition from its old space to the new location at 110 Charles Street. It was one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done — to renovate an abandoned coffee shop into a multi-use performance space ... I got to book many local bands and see them become fullfledged, confident musicians. NOISE: What was the idea behind this local compilation CD? I’m guessing it was influenced by your time working at (SCENE). Richards: Yes, very much so. In early 2006, just before I took the position at (SCENE), I released my first compilation CD called, “First-hand Accounts, Theories, and Their Repercussions.” I’ve always been interested in the idea of putting out original music. ... Working directly with musicians on live shows for two years at (SCENE) was pretty inspiring, and I really wanted to re-enter the area, so to speak, with this new compilation.

DETAILS{

White Pines won’t be at Wednesday’s show, but they can be heard on the CD.

NOISE: Have all the artists on, “In the Orchard of Osiris,” played at (SCENE)? Richards: Yes, with one exception, all these artists have graced the stage at (SCENE) several times. The band that never made it to Lansing is Vancouver, British Columbia’s Horde of Two. ... So the connection to (SCENE) and live music in Lansing really is a deep and integral part of “In the Orchard of Osiris.” NOISE: Do you feel like you’ve actualized your goal for this album? Richards: I’ve been listening to these songs for the better part of 18 months, and

I still feel it is an intoxicatingly good mix of great songs. It still sounds fresh. I was so excited as each song arrived — all of them really strong, interesting musical statements. ... This CD is documentary evidence of the amazing, under-heralded talent pool we have in Michigan, since 12 of the 15 featured acts have their roots in mid-Michigan. It’s also evidence of the rich underground culture still that exists in truly independent music: traveling cross-country in vans and enduring huge amounts of indifference just to do what you love.

A new Prefab album is cause for celebration and while “Let’s Change” isn’t new material but rather a seventeen-years-delayed follow-up to “Jordan: The Comeback,” it is a magnificent set of lush, sometimes joyful ’90s Brit pop. And even in late 2010, it sounds beautifully current. Paddy McAloon has a distinctive, vulnerable voice and occupies the rare songwriting air of Elvis Costello and Morrissey, but never received the attention he deserved. “Let’s Change” won’t crack open the U.S. singles chart for him, but college radio owes its listeners the pleasure of the insistent, longing “Music is a Princess”, a song that could have been cringingly maudlin, but winds up utterly majestic. “Steve McQueen” is their flat out masterpiece, but “Let’s Change” is worthy of mention in the same breath, and along with “Jordan,” will be remembered as Prefab’s three finest albums.

Maddie (left) and Sawyer Harris were raised with their father’s Jewish traditions and late mother’s Catholic traditions. Michael and Matthew Carlson were raised with their mother’s Protestant tradition. The family respects all of these traditions today, while also creating their own.

Scott Harris rummaged through a cardboard box of holiday decor items for his menorah. Considering the twists Harris puts on all the holiday traditions with his family, it’s no surprise to see him pull a ceramic teddy bear menorah out of the box instead of an ornate metal candelabra. Wednesday was the first night of Hanukkah, and Harris will lead a low key celebration. “We’ll light the menorah and I’ll make potato latkes very poorly out of a box,” Harris said. Harris, who owns Everybody Reads bookstore in Lansing, considers himself a secular Jew. His connection to Judaism is more cultural than religious. “The parts of the faith that I appreciate most are those that are universal aspects, the notion that we’re all in this together, we’re all part of a common family,” Harris said. “I think that extends beyond the walls of a congregation and to the community in general.” It’s likely they’ll get together with his brother and nephews during Hanukkah. “They’re of a similar mindset,” Harris said. “They recognize that we’re enjoying some of the traditional practices but we’re not really engaged in a deep religious level.” That’s where the teddy bear menorah comes in — a sense of respect and of humor exists in everything the Harris family does for the holidays. Celebrating multiple holidays means they appreciate them all, but don’t get caught up in the dogma of either religion. Harris lives in Mason with his two teenage children, who were raised with his Jewish traditions and his first wife’s Catholic holiday traditions. “They’re very tolerant, they’re very ana-

HANUKKAH

Hanukkah is an eight-day Jewish holiday also known as the Festival of Lights. It starts on the 25th day of the Kislev, according to the Hebrew calendar. That means the date varies year to year in the Gregorian calendar. It typically falls in late November or December. It begins on Dec. 1 this year.

lytical,” Harris said. “They understand that people come to their conclusions through their experiences and upbringing.” His first wife died eight years ago, but they’ve kept her Christmas traditions alive. “We try not to make it about the gift giving,” Harris said. “We’re raising the kids to appreciate more the notion of family and that we’re together so let’s pause for a moment and reflect on what we’re grateful for.” Harris remarried three years ago to Kathie Carlson, who has two boys from a previous marriage. They blend her Protestant traditions into the season, too. “I find the Christmas tree really peaceful, to have all the lights off in the house and just kind of meditate in front of the Christmas tree lights,” Carlson said. Harris said the tree is emblematic of their histories. “It blends Kathie, my wife’s history with my history with my first wife’s history,” Harris said. “Even the ornaments are kind of cool because they, too, tell stories. Most of them are not store-bought ones, they’re the ones that the kids made or one’s that were gifts to us or have some meaning.” Carlson admits she’s still learning about the Jewish holiday traditions. “Having been raised in Mason, even throughout high school I didn’t know we had Jewish people in our community,” Carlson said. “It is nice to have the insight.” Instead of getting stressed out about gift

giving, last year the family took a vote and decided to take a trip to Toronto instead of buying lots of Hanukkah or Christmas presents. “We thought this way instead of getting stuff we get memories,” Harris said. The family marches to its own beat for holiday meals too. Carlson is a vegetarian and her two sons are omnivores. Harris and his two children don’t keep kosher. Instead, their sense of spirituality has led them to a vegan diet, which is even more strict. Keeping kosher can mean different things depending on how observant each individual is, but typically results in eliminating some foods (pig and shellfish) and keeping dairy and meat products separate. Vegans don’t eat animal products of any kind, including meat, dairy or eggs. “That speaks both to our spirituality and our sensibilities,” Harris said. “We do believe in God and that God created all these creatures and if there is anything we can do to diminish (their) suffering, if we’re aware of it we are morally obligated to act upon it.” Carlson’s extended family celebrates Christmas at Thanksgiving, and it brings hunters and animal rights activists to the same dinner table. “I come from a meat and potatoes family,” Carlson said. “I wouldn’t even (call some of them) omnivores,” Harris joked. “I think all they eat is meat, even for breakfast.” They get creative with recipes to make sure as many side dishes are vegan as possible, and the turkey and Tofurky (tofubased turkey substitute) sit side by side on the Thanksgiving table. And even though they agree to disagree about what a holiday meal looks like, the rest of the traditions are easier to navigate. “We find common ground,” Harris said. “Usually it’s over football.”

INGREDIENTS: • 5 potatoes • 2 white onions • 3 eggs • 1 teaspoon salt • 1/4 teaspoon pepper • 1/4 cup to 3/4 cup flour • canola oil PREPARATION: • Peel potatoes. • Blend potatoes and onions in a food processor for a smooth latke batter or dice onions and grate potatoes for a more textured latke. • Drain mixture and place into a bowl, adding eggs, salt and pepper. Add enough flour so that the mixture holds together. • Pour about one inch of oil into a large frying pan. Heat the oil to mediumhigh heat. • Drop about 1/4 cup of the potato mixture into the oil and flatten into a pancake shape. • Repeat until all batter is used. • Fry for several minutes on each side until golden brown. Drain on paper towels. • Optional: Serve the latkes with applesauce. MIX IT UP The recipe above will produce tasty traditional latkes. You can make latkes more festive (and a little healthier) by adding grated zucchini, leeks, sweet potato, beets, pumpkin, carrot or cauliflower to the batter. — Source: Recipe from About.com

I don’t think there are many people in the area who haven’t been to Sawyer’s Gourmet Pancake House. It’s consistently one of the top places people recommend for breakfast any time of the day.

Neither Laura nor I had ever been there, so we had to go see what all the talk was about. We’re pleased to say even after one visit, it’s become one of our new favorite spots, and we can’t wait to go back.

THE SCENE

One cool thing about Sawyer’s is the artwork that dots the walls. If you look closer, you’ll see they’re created by local artists. Furthermore, they’re for sale, with proceeds benefiting a local

Its menu items — a wide range of breakfast, lunch and dinner choices — are made from scratch using all natural or organic and local ingredients. While we thought this meant it took more time to prepare, the food came out quick. When a place declares its blueberry pancakes as the “world’s best,” it’s something that should be put to the test. Laura ordered a short stack ($6.95) — two large pancakes stuffed with blueberries, then topped with homemade blueberry compote. I had the patriot waffle ($7.45), which was a rather thin but big in size stuffed with strawberries, blueber-

there. Cooley students in particular are loyal to Brannigan Brothers, and the bar is in turn loyal to them. The law students will often find specials coordinated with their finals, will organize bar crawls around Brannigan Brothters, and the bar even looks to Cooley students for their local band talent. In addition to the live music, which can be found on either Wednesday or Thursday of each week, DJs entertain the crowd of locals on the weekend. “Friday and Saturday is it off the wall,” Muzillo said. “The DJ is loud, there’s a lot of dancing, and a lot of partying. It’s totally fun.” Even more fun will be on the way to the bar post-football season when karaoke returns

to the entertainment lineup on Monday nights. Entertainment may depend on the day, but good food and drinks are what bring the community into Brannigan Brothers on a daily basis. One area in which the bar departs from the norm is that the menu is incredibly extensive. It boasts “Irish and international flavors,” and features just that. In fact, there’s far more Mexican, Asian, American and Italian on menu than Irish, but potato leek soup is served daily for anyone who might doubt the pub’s Irishness. A lot of bars may look and feel like Brannigan Brothers, but it’s rare for one to really pull off the genuine atmosphere of community found there. It’s the kind of ordinary every bar should strive for.

If you’ve never been to Brannigan Brothers in downtown Lansing, all you have to do to know exactly what the place looks like is to close your eyes and picture a bar. You got it? If your mental image is of the quintessential “pub,” a community meeting spot, a casual spot for drinks and food — a bar bar, if you will — you’ve just nailed it on the head. That’s Brannigan Brothers. Just to be sure you’re imagining the right place, the bar in your head should include the following: tall pub tables with wobbly chairs, an assortment of beer mirrors on the wall and beer banners strewn across the ceiling, several TVs, an area for darts, classic beers on tap, daily and weekly specials written on whiteboards here and there … is that pretty much what you’re seeing? Good. The thing that makes Brannigan Brothers unique is how well they do “standard.” The heartbeat of any regular ‘ol bar is its patrons and their loyalty, and at this Washington Square pub, they’ve mastered the art of the community meeting spot. “We get a lot of state workers, LCC students and Cooley students,” said bartender Pam Muzillo. “State workers will come after work for happy hour and the students will come after class. We create an atmosphere that it is a wild time and a lot of fun, but we don’t have a lot of problems.” What appears to be a typical Irish bar homage to public safety officials on the walls turns out to be a display of affection for another group of loyal regulars. According to Muzillo, local firefighters and police are frequent patrons, often holding their parties and get-togethers

Two wild compilations

KISS. Devo. Two very different bands, but both unquestionably influential. Those musical worlds collide Friday at Oade’s Hidden Camel in Lansing, where Lansing-based GTG Records and The Wind Records co-release two compilation tribute albums — one honoring KISS and one, a tribute to Devo. Expect a KISS tribute band — complete with full make-up — and a Devo tribute band at the show, both with all local players. For the KISS group (The Struttin’ Deuces), Timmy Rodriguez plays Gene Simmons, Chris Baratono is Paul Stanley, Brad van Staveren is Ace Frehley and Ryan Horky plays Peter Criss. The Devo group (Re-evolution) counts Isaac Vander Schuur on vocals, Tommy McCord on guitar, Ben Hassenger on keyboards, Nicholas Merz on bass and Chris Urrabazo behind the drum kit. Both releases are full of local bands. The Devo album, “Explosions,” features The Cartridge Family, Calliope, The Plurals, Cavalcade, Drinking Mercury, Gates of Steel, Lord Vapid, Dr. Device, Johnny Unicorn, Blue Jello, Frank and Earnest, Narc Out the Reds, Public Pubes, MK Ultra Culkin, Corey Kellicut and more. The KISS tribute band, “No More Tomorrow Baby: A Tribute to KISS” has Frank and Earnest, The Break-Ups, The Cartridge Family, Lightning Bugs, Cavalcade, Crooked Sound, Stargrazer, Narc Out the Reds and more. Lansing-based Timmy Rodriguez (The Break-ups, GTG) heads up the KISS tribute album, while Rich Tupica (The Wind Records) and Tommy McCord (The Plurals, GTG) release the Devo one. • Release show for KISS and Devo tribute albums • 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3 • Oade’s Hidden Camel, 1210 S. ‘Extras: The Complete Series’ HB O

(12 EPISODES, FEATURELENGTH FINALE. NOT RATED)

As a struggling “background artist” in films who fancies himself a “proper actor,” Andy is desperate and cloddish, but has heart and a genuine affection for his friend Maggie, another extra. Surviving a slew of disastrously embarrassing encounters with celebrities, Andy realizes his dream of a sitcom on the BBC, only to realize he may never be famous enough. Ricky Gervais gave the world David Brent, one of the most unstoppably awesome comic creations in history, and that is who he will be chiefly remembered for. But “Extras” Andy Millman is another comedic homerun for Gervais, and he mines some of the same theater of the awkward as “The Office,” to similarly hilarious effect. With a more rounded supporting cast and imageshattering celebrity cameos, “Extras” never quite reaches the perfection of “The Office,” but its poignant, uncomfortable comedy trumps 99 percent of what else is out there.

(HACHEETTE AUDIO)

It kind of blows my mind that Keith Richards was able to write an autobiography; I can’t remember what I had for dinner last night, yet Keith “Hard-living” Richards is able to remember his entire life?! Regardless, “Life,” Richards highly anticipated memoir, has been getting wall-to-wall rave reviews. Richards has had such a juicy life as a seminal member of one of the greatest rock bands of all times. But what REALLY has me excited is the audio book, which is partially narrated by my personal God, Johnny Depp! It’s well known that Depp based his character interpretation for “Pirates of the Caribbean”s’ Jack Sparrow on modern-day musical pirate Richards. Depp has even directed an as-yetuntitled documentary about Richards that’s currently in post-production. So take the most demanded memoir of the season, add in the most demanded actor of our times — who just happens to be an expert on the subject — and voila: Audio book gold.

SIERR A NEVADA BREW ING C O., CHIC O, CAL IF. WWW.SIERRANEVADA.COM 5.5 PERCENT ABV

Sierra Nevada was one of the first microbrewery success stories, popularizing the American pale ale style to the point where its sales (based on 2009 figures) make it the No. 2 craft brewer in the country (behind Boston Beer Co., maker of Samuel Adams) and No. 6 among all United States breweries. Many of its beers feature variations of strong hops, as evidenced by Celebration Ale, Bigfoot Barleywine, Torpedo, the Harvest series and so on. The company has focused on such beers, doing as much experimentation with hops as possible — dry hops, wet hops, local hops, international hops and every variation in between. But Sierra Nevada has shown with such offerings as Glissade and Kellerweis that there is more to beer than hops and its latest release, Tumbler Autumn Brown Ale, is no exception. The beer highlights roasted and nutty malt as its main flavor profile. The fresh roasted grain is a highlight of the aroma coming from the dark brown liquid topped with a foamy head. The roasted malts are smooth, with more of a subtle chocolate background, as opposed to coffee. While

the beer may not feature Sierra Nevada’s trademark of strong hop flavors, hops are present as a background bitterness that doesn’t linger unpleasantly but helps balance the slight sweetness of the malt. Tumbler is a smooth beer that is pleasant to drink and unique enough to stand out among the thousands of beer offerings on the shelves and in drinking establishments. Sierra Nevada beers are readily available locally. If you’re someone turned off by overly hopped beers or pineygrapefruit profiles, don’t let that stop you from trying their other offerings. Based on the descriptions of its draft-only beers at its Chico taproom, I wish they would go national with a chain of pubs! Bigfoot Barleywine from 1994, a chocolate ancho chili imperial stout, almond marzen, brandy barrel-aged Belgian trippel — the list sounds like Beer Heaven.

Final open house

Goldenrod Music in Old Town celebrates its 35th anniversary this year as a music company with a passion for quality, heart-felt music. The independent music distribution company’s main focus is women’s music, with a roster of more than 400 artists including Susan Werner, Ani DiFranco and Girlyman. Along with Goldenrod’s anniversary comes its last open house on Saturday, featuring Ann Arbor “pleasantly aggressive folk” duo Nervous But Excited, Minneapolis acoustic songwriter Ellis, Brooklyn R&B singer-songwriter Nedra Johnson and Lansing-based folk singer Sally Potter. For Goldenrod President Terry Grant, the show marks the beginning of her retirement and the end of Goldenrod in its current form. Susan Frazier, part of Goldenrod since 1980, will continue some of the company’s operations on a smaller scale, and Goldenrod will move out of Old Town. As for the holiday open house, Grant is looking forward to celebrating with friends, volunteers, staff, neighbors, customers and everyone else who has shown support over the years. “Our open houses are right up there with ‘most fun things we do,’” she says. “I love the live music and our musician friends who volunteer their time every year to make this a special event. Goldenrod has been part of many communities, and they come together for this event with joy and fun.” • Goldenrod Music’s final open house with Nervous But Excited, Ellis, Nedra Johnson, Sally Potter • 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4 • 1310 Turner Street in Lansing’s Old Town • Free. Dueling guitars

The Green Door in Lansing is a laid-back place to take holiday guests, and just in time for the holidays, blues duo Smokin’ Joe Kubek & Bnois King bring their national tour Sunday to the Door. The two guitarists just released a new album, “Have Blues, Will Travel,” and will play fresh songs off the CD. Fans of raw, rocking solos, ’60s blues-rock and duel guitar playing will likely dig this show. After doing a dozen albums together and touring for two decades, it’s obvious why these two have loads of musical chemistry and tight guitar chops. • Smokin’ Joe Kubek & Bnois King • 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 5 • The Green Door Blues Bar and Grill, 1005 E.
