The Art Alley will host Bigger Brush Media’s holiday extravaganza, which includes performances by local artists, holiday treats and more. I also ordered the apricot wings ($6.95), a one-pound order of pineapple-marinated baked wings glazed with apricot syrup. It came with buffalo sauce and celery. While the wings were meaty and crispy, the apricot flavor was a little overpowering — thick and syrupy. Laura had the fiesta chicken sandwich ($8.25), limemarinated chicken breast with refried black beans, salsa, cheese and avocado on a grilled onion bun. Go green and get crafty for the holidays by making a set of recycled magazine bowls for the news junkie in your life. Make them in a variety of sizes and you’ll end up with a funky office accessory, plant holder or decorative centerpiece. WHAT YOU NEED: • Old magazines • Clear tape • Craft glue* HOW IT WORKS • Rip full-size pages of the magazine out. • Fold each in half three times, into about 1 inch strips. • Tape the strips to each other at each end, making a long chain of paper. Roll paper tightly into a spiral. • Use a rubber band to hold the strips in place if you need to finish the project in more than one sitting. (A six-inch spiral makes a small planter and takes about two magazines. The bigger the spiral, the bigger the bowl.) • When the spiral has reached a substantial size, tape down the last strip to the outer edge. Holding the center of the spiral down on a surface, gently lift up from two sides to create the height desired. • Optional: Coat with clear glue to add stability. Coating the bowls in a clear craft glue is optional, but will make them studier and more water resistant.

And when the first thing I saw upon entering was a sign proclaiming, “Country College Night - Half Off Everything - Ride Dick All Night!” I was feeling pretty affirmed in my assumptions. This was going to be a loud, crass, obnoxious theme park dedicated to bad behavior in the name of cowboy culture. Dick, incidentally, is the name of the resident mechanical bull. In case you were wondering. So I sat down at the bar and awaited the ridiculousness. Instead I found myself witnessing Floyd and his wife Ellie teaching a mild-mannered flock of folks to square dance. There they were: a dance floor full of nice, friendly people shuffling merrily around with their partners in tentative square dancing steps. These people didn’t seem loud, crass or obnoxious. Come to think of it, as I looked around myself, I didn’t see half the cowboy kitsch I expected to find at The Whiskey Barrel. The place definitely has a country theme to it, but not garishly so. The tall bar tables sit on big barrels — whiskey barrels, presumably
— and the interior is meant to feel a bit like an old-time saloon, but it also has clean, modern elements. And the girls behind the bar wear cowboy hats and tiny, tiny shorts. In December. So I guess not every element of The Whiskey Barrel was a surprise. I have no doubt that after the square-dancers clear out the atmosphere becomes more befitting of Daisy Dukes than mild-mannered cowpokes. Whiskey Barrel is the former Sparty’s Dance Club, after all. Though the bar changed names and interior decorators in 2005, the management is the same. “It was time for a change,” said Ed Bentley, manager of 10 years. “Sparty’s was a college-oriented club. It was 18 and up every night with Top 40 music.” Now the bar is 18 and up just two of the four nights it’s open and plays country music, but The Whiskey Barrel also varies from the original format by doubling as a live music venue. “We’ve had some national names here,” Bentley said, “and we’ve got a few coming up, like Frankie Ballard, Brett Eldredge and Jason Sturgeon.” While those rather impressive names might not have made appear-

ances at Sparty’s, those who were fans of the old dance club will be glad to know that their specialty drinks, 34-oz. Long Islands and a mysterious concoction called the Blue Motorcycle are still in rotation. The beer selection may not be huge, nor widely varied at The Whiskey Barrel, but what is huge are the beers themselves. I’m pretty poor at estimating quantities, but I’m fairly sure I could have fit my entire forearm in the mug. They also are the only country-themed bar in Lansing, and the only countrythemed anything that has ever temped me to use the descriptor, “tasteful,” but much of The Whiskey Barrel — from the décor to the tame square dancing class — is just that. I stumbled across this book while putting together the requisite holiday display of humongous music books, and consider it a real find among a section of straightforward bios and photojournalism collections. This fascinating book is only about the size of a standard hardcover, but packs a punch that will beguile any indie-rock fan. Covering artists and bands from Little Richard to The Kinks to Radiohead, each section begins with an entertaining breakdown of the music and the rockers behind it, featuring a selected discography and playlist. But the really interesting part is the comics that are paired with the bios: Each is a totally unique approach to the subject. The overall sense echoes the underground comics of the ’70s — a fun, creative, zine-type approach to histories that have been told over and over, but are somehow made incredibly fresh again.

With a rep for crafting poignant, interpersonal lyrics and putting on explosive live shows, singer Craig Owens drove Davison, Mich., post-hardcore band Chiodos to the top before leaving the band to pursue his own project. Now the venture is fully conceived, and Owens is out on the road with his new band, D.R.U.G.S., and set to release his debut album on Decaydance/Sire Records in early 2011. Recorded with John Feldmann, (The Used, Panic at the Disco), the disc is more aggressive than anything Owens did with Chiodos. He says making the D.R.U.G.S. record was Courtesy photo “cathartic” and his “form of therapy.” The group’s “Rise from the Ashes Tour” makes a stop Sunday at Mac’s Bar. The much-buzzed early collaboration between Danny McBride (“Eastbound and Down”) and Jody Hill (“Observe and Report”), “Foot Fist” attempts to plant the seeds of what would become their signature comedy style; brazen, ego-filled dialogue in a deadpan delivery, with a wild lack of self awareness. And while there are bright, momentarily hilarious spots in “Foot Fist,” the result still feels more like a half-baked, overlong Mad TV skit than a feature film. McBride’s Fred Simmons, wannabe Taekwondo superstar stuck teaching in a stripmall dojo, feels like notes scribbled on the back of a napkin, waiting to be fleshed out as Kenny Powers, comedy force of nature from “Eastbound.” And for two comedy strongmen such as McBride and Hill, the inexcusable creeps in at times; boredom. A wry comedy without focus or direction, “Foot Fist” is worthwhile as a curiosity and not much more.

Lansing-based folk-rock band Gossip in the Forest will release its self-titled debut Sunday in Lansing. As opposed to a traditional concert, the show will take on a special, open house format, with guests coming and going as they please. You’re all painfully aware of my affinity for Monkeyball (www.playmonkeyball.com) ... but what you may not know is that I actually enjoy a little-known sport that requires cardiovascular activity. (Shocking, I know.) There’s a new game on the tailgate circuit that’s perfect for that friend or family member who just has to get active, as annoying as that can be. Lord knows that a few Smirnoff Ices can make a girl want to jump around a bit. Spikeball (www.spikeball.com) is a game that is played two-on-two with rules similar to volleyball. As Urban Daddy defines it, “A taut Hula Hoopsized net is placed at ankle level between a pair of two-player teams. You smack the palm-sized ball down on the net so it ricochets up at your opponents. They have up to three hits between them to control it and bounce it back to you. When they miss, you score. First team to 21 wins.” That sounds a wee bit banal, but honestly — play this game for ten minutes and you won’t be able to quit. I’ve played a number of times, (quite competitively with three big strong men at one point) and I can attest to both the fun and athletic aspects of the game. Do yourself a favor: Drop $50 and buy a set. Full disclosure: I have no affiliation with Spikeball whatsoever. It’s just a sweet game.

cleanse the palate of the peach flavor but erased it. This is not a good thing — fruit tastes good and should linger on your taste buds for a while. The pecan presence was not noticeable, even after letting the glass warm up. Shiner describes the base beer for Holiday Cheer as “an Old World Dunkelweizen.” I didn’t get that at all. There was no clove-banana character as is common in German-style dark wheat ales, nor the typical background flavors from dark grains. These chocolate, roasted and/or caramel specialty grains give dark beers their color, so the mention of caramel color on the label doesn’t make much sense. Shiner makes some great beer, especially its black lager and Czech-style pilsner, so it was disappointing that this experiment didn’t make the cut. Some fine-tuning could result in a unique and delicious beer.

It’s time to get into the Christmas spirit, and popular folk artists John Latini and Jamie-Sue Seal are ready with a collection of holiday-themed roots and blues music. The two on Sunday perform their second annual Christmas Concert at All Saint’s Episcopal Church. TANGO IN THE NIGHT (WARNER BROS.)
For me, Lindsey Buckingham WAS Fleetwood Mac. A wildly unpopular assertion, based on the relative strength of their more bluesoriented, earlier work but one I am confident in making. With 1987’s “Tango in the Night,” Buckingham would leave his final mark on the band, before setting out on a satisfying but far less commercially successful solo career. And with the glossy yet somehow raw sound of “Tango,” he left on a high note. From the stirring “Isn’t It Midnight” to the singalong quality of “Big Love,” the album is full of highlights. Though the production is decidedly ’80s, “Caroline” has a seductive, soulful sound that showcases Buckingham’s rich voice. Never to be as highly regarded as “Rumours” or endlessly studied like “Tusk,” “Tango in the Night” remains one of Fleetwood Mac’s best albums, and an enduring testament to the songwriting abilities of Lindsey Buckingham.

Shiner Holiday Cheer
It’s somewhat surprising that peaches are seldom used for fruit beers. I found through my homebrewing adventures that while it takes 15 to 20 pounds of raspberries or cherries to really get their character and flavor to shine in a five-gallon batch of beer, it only took 10 pounds of peaches. Even better is that using overripe peaches are best, which means heavily discounted store prices on the fruit. The best peach beer I’ve had is Lindeman’s Peche from Belgium — wonderful fruit flavor and aroma without being too sweet and an Asti Spumante character to the body. I found Shiner’s Holiday Cheer on the store shelves and the initial description on the label was enticing — “ale brewed with peaches and pecans. ...” The peach flavor and aroma of the wheat ale was enticing, but not overwhelming, blending well with the malt. The medium carbonation also worked in favor of the fruit, giving the beer a solid quality that lets you know you are drinking a beer, not a soda. However, the finish destroyed all this good will with an overly harsh, hoppy bitterness that didn’t
