Top albums of 2010 Local music insiders give their votes for No. 1 this year

Anne Erickson | NOISE

With 2010 winding down, I asked a handful of local music people to name their No. 1 album picks of the past decade. Here’s what they had to say!

Downtown Dimitri’s has moved to West Lansing at Creyts & Saginaw

METAL

• Who: Jim Albrecht, bass player for Lansing metal band Genocya • Album pick: Nachtmystium “Addicts: Black Meddle Pt. II” • Why: Instead of just continuing with their great mix of Black Metal/Pink Floyd, they mix in other influences (early industrial bands like Joy Division, Killing Joke and Ministry) to produce an album with great song writing and atmosphere. Definitely a band to watch!

2701 E. Grand River Ave. East Lansing • 517-351-0421

• Who: Scott Bell, booking for Mac’s Bar and Bermuda Mohawk Productions • Album pick: Dr. Dre’s forthcoming and reported final studio album, “DETOX.” • Why: I’m excited for the good doctor to potentially drop this masterpiece on the rap game. Dre has proven once again that he could conceivably be the undisputed “Father of Rap,” with a reported 200 songs recorded and artists like TI, Ludacris and Lil Wayne

ghostwriting on the project and the latest single, “KUSH.” Fans everywhere will have to concede that this could be Dr. Dre’s greatest work thus far.

INDIE-ROCK

• Who: Aaron Bales, singer/ guitar player for Flatfoot • Album pick: Charlie Don’t Shake, “1-800charliedontshake” • Why: This Lansing/Chicago band created my road trip album of 2010. Some songs like “The Hardy Boys” and “Liquor Store Girl” lodge in your head right away. Others will come with time. The album manages to be sloppy, tight, lazy, energetic and even funny — sometimes all within one song. Between the indie (like the kids like), Weezer-esque rock, raw blues and sing-a-long choruses, there’s enough variety to keep things interesting and enough craft and skill to keep you listening.

ALT-ROCK

• Who: Nate Dorough, co-owner of independent concert promoter Fusion Shows • Album pick: Jimmy Eat World, “Invented” • Why: Jimmy Eat World never disappoints, and this record was no exception.

The perfect mix of edgy guitars, soaring melodies, simple rhythms and complex orchestrations. The band backs it up live, which to me is the biggest compliment.

POP-ROCK

• Who: Anne Erickson, music writer for NOISE and LSJ; on-air afternoons on 94.1-FM The EDGE • Album pick: Anberlin, “Dark Is the Way, Light Is a Place” • Why: This album is solid alternative pop-rock, with simple melodies, layers of guitars and Stephen Christian’s lush vocals. The first single, “Impossible,” is super-catchy and high-energy without being too manic, complete with building choruses and a sing-a-long hook. I hear a new riff or subtle vocal every time I listen.

METAL

• Who: Randy Ladiski, bassist and vocalist for Dagon • Album pick: Fleshgod Apocalypse, “Mafia” • Why: In a time when overproduced metal is flooding the market, this album blends the new school of metal with the old school very nicely. Few bands can get away with playing at such break-neck speeds and still have such memorable riffs.

POP-FOLK

• Who: Irving Ronk, co-owner Fusion Shows • Album pick: Ben Rector, “Into The Morning” • Why: I picked Ben’s record because it’s what I’ve listened to the most this year. It’s an extremely catchy record, no song is the same as another and lyrically Ben is leaps and bounds above most songwriters in his genre. He’s unsigned, but he broke iTunes top 10 early in the year, so I’m not alone in thinking he’s the next big thing.

POP-PUNK

• Who: Cale Sauter, owner/co-operator Bermuda Mohawk Productions, guitarist Cavalcade, keyboards the Cartridge Family • Album pick: The Wonder Years, “The Upsides” • Why: Though, with this pick, I lose credibility with my friends (though I loved Superchunk’s “Majesty Shredding”) and my band’s peers (though I loved Nachmystium’s “Addicts”) by picking a pop-punk album, “The Upsides” is just anthem after sing-along anthem for maladjusted dudes hacking away in DIY punk bands. Extremely relatable lyrics and an instant pick-me-up every time I listen to it.

BAKED BRIE WITH FIG JAM

FOOD

• 1 can (8 oz) refrigerated crescent dinner rolls • 1 round (8 oz) Brie cheese • 4 tablespoons of fig jam (any fruit spread will work) • 1 egg

Music can make or break a party, whether you’re having a few people over for relaxed evening or want people up on the dance floor. For 25 years, Lansing resident Chris Delgado of Jump Start DJs has been providing the soundtrack for weddings, school dances, holiday parties and corporate events. “New Year’s is a different animal,” Delgado said. On New Year’s Eve this year, the 46-year-old will serve as a one-man band at a wedding. In addition to offering an endless playlist, he also straps on an acoustic guitar and performs live. “For people who are extroverts and have a love of music, it’s kind of a natural progression,” Delgado said about working as a DJ. “It’s nice to get paid and whatnot, but it’s also nice to do some work that you love to do.”

• Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Lay the Brie in the center of the dough. Spread the fig jam on top of the brie. Fold the excess pastry up around the Brie to enclose it. • Place on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush with one beaten egg. Bake for 20 minutes or until the outside is golden, reduce the oven temperature to 325 degrees and bake 10 more minutes. Serve with bread and/or crackers. Adapted from a recipe from Pillsbury.com

Delgado said New Year’s Eve used to be a night he and the seven DJs who work for him would be booked solid. Now that’s not as common. “I think maybe just with the economy in Michigan people are price shopping,” Delgado said. He also said there are a lot more DJs in the market now. “(If) you always liked music and now you have no job, you think, ‘Geez, I’ve got two grand and I’ll go out and buy some gear,’” he said. “And voila, I’m a DJ. Hire me.” The latest gadgets are fun for DJs, but their livelihood depends on their performance skills. “You can teach them what to play from oldies to disco to Motown, but you can’t teach them to have a good, funny upbeat personality,” Delgado said. “Even if you have all the coolest gear, if you’re a dud as an en-

tertainer, it doesn’t matter a hill of beans.” Delgado said DJs live and die by word of mouth advertising, and now sites like weddingwire.com or theknot.com give customers a chance to leave reviews that lead to more business, too. Delgado said playing music is only 20 percent of what he does. There isn’t really a set DJ style or foolproof playlist. “Knowing how to judge a crowd (is key),” he said. “It’s hard to pick a playlist in advance. What’s going to make most of the people dance most of the time? Familiarity.” The best way to ensure a rocking party? “Honestly, it’s who you invite to the party. We’ve done weddings of 500 people, we can’t get 20 to dance. We’ve done weddings of 60 people and 58 of them are dancing. Make sure you invite fun people.”

• Preheat oven to 325 F. • For the crust: Place bread crumbs, pistachios, olive oil, basil, thyme, and oregano in a food processor. Pulse until blended. Press into the bottom of a four or five inch springform pan. • For the cheesecake: Combine salt, sugar, cream, ricotta and goat cheeses with one egg and one egg yolk and blend in a food processor. Add basil and pulse until mixed, but not blended. Pour onto crust. Place the pan in a square baking dish. Pour hot water in the baking dish until it reaches halfway up the sides of the springform pan. Bake until the cheesecake is golden at the edges, about 45 minutes. Let cool to room temperature. Chill in the refrigerator until it’s time to serve. Let the cheesecake return to room temperature before serving. Serve with an assortment of crackers. $2.50 pudding shots from the Tin Can and Harem Urban Lounge, available on New Year’s Eve. Top to bottom: Superman, Eggnog, Pumpkin Pie, Christmas Cookie and Candy Cane.

DRINKS

At downtown Lansing bars Harem Urban Lounge and the Exchange, bottle service and reserved tables are the norm for New Year’s Eve. “It’s (about) the wow factor,” said manager Dave Sell, the general manager for Tin Can, Harem Urban Lounge, The Exchange, The Loft and Omar’s Show Bar. “Every one of our spots has a different vibe,” Sell said. Across the board, it’s a big night for champagne and party favors. “It’s a slightly later-arriving crowd,” Sell said. “You’re not going to have any happy hour. It’s a destination night for them to go out.” The newest bar on the block, Tin Can, is making it known nothing special will happen on New Year’s Eve. “Our motto is, ‘We’re not doing anything,’” Sell said. The Tin Can hopes to draw the crowd looking to hang with friends and cheap brews but with no fuss. The Tin Can will export its most festive element for the evening — its signature specialty frozen pudding shots in flavors like egg nog and candy cane will be available next door at the Harem Urban Lounge. Sell couldn’t divulge their secret recipe, but shared another favorite of the bars’ staff. It’s tradition for the staff to end the night with a mind eraser — layers of vodka, Kaluha and soda water in a glass — on the night of the first snow. And after shooing the last customers out on New Year’s Eve after they ring in the new year? They might feel the need to repeat the tradition.

Samuel Adams Infinium BOSTON BEER C O., BOSTON, MA. WWW.SAMUELADAMS.COM 10.3 PERCENT ABV

Samuel Adams’ latest specialty beer is a joint effort with the 1,000-yearold Weihenstephan brewery of Germany, well known for its quality weiss beers. Being the season of giving, I resisted the Scroogish urge to hog the ale for myself and took the 750ml, champagnestyle bottle to my local tavern to share with some fellow beer lovers. Based on the little I knew about Infinium, I expected a beer along the lines of the Belgian Deus beer, which is fermented with champagne yeast. But while Infinium has a champagne-like body, the golden ale has no champagne yeast flavor, lots of fruit notes in the aroma and a sourish background. It’s interesting how people’s senses differ. Mike Champion, who helped form the Stevens Point, Wis., homebrew club, whose alumni include the owners of the Central Waters and O’so breweries, found that cherry-like fruit was most prominent in the aroma. My nose took notice of fresh grain at the forefront. The grain was also a major taste factor, accompanied by a subtle malt background.

T O DD H A EF ER beerman@postcrescent.com

The sourish aspect of the beer was somewhat of a surprise, since neither Samuel Adams or Weihenstephan are known for delving into that aspect of beer. It is not as pronounced as a Belgian lambic, but does have the dry, acidic finish with minimal sweetness. While Sam Adams has nationwide distribution, supplies of Infinium will be limited. It’s being marketed as a substitute to champagne for New Year’s toasting, based on a survey that found more men would rather toast the occasion with beer. Much easier to find will be Samuel Adams’ winter releases, of which its Holiday Porter, Old Fezziweg and Winter Lager are very good. The porter is a solid example of the style, the flavorful English hops and nice malt base in Old Fezziwig place it on par with quality English ales (with a dash of spices), and the more prominent spices in the lager give it a uniqueness without being overbearing.

Feast of flavors at Lansing El Azteco EL AZTECO

Esther Gim | NOISE

When I think of El Azteco, I think of the East Lansing location and my not-too-positive experiences with the food there. I realize the Lansing location is somewhat of an institution, but I’ve avoided it — until now. Travis, who frequented the restaurant as he grew up in the area, promised me the Lansing location is different. So I kept an open mind and gave it a try.

THE SCENE

We dropped by for lunch on Christmas Eve, and the place was hopping. It was festive, and you could feel the excitement. The booth seats were hard, but didn’t detract from the experience.

THE FOOD

A big basket of chips and salsa are complimentary. The salsa is some of the best you’ll ever have — bold and fiery, not for the faint of hearts. It’s also not the usual pico de gallo that’s served at other places, which was a

1016 W. Saginaw St., Lansing, 485-4589 • 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily www.elazteco.me

major plus. Travis insisted we start with the cheese dip ($4.50), a combination of cottage cheese, sour cream, Muenster cheese and spices. I’m no fan of cottage cheese, but the other ingredients helped smooth the texture to make it less curdy. The cheese and spices gave it flavor, but wasn’t overpowering. (If you order the dip, try it together with the salsa. Yum). Travis suggested I try the enchiladas suizas ($8.50), three rolled up enchiladas

filled with chicken, then smothered with a creamy, cheese mixture. Travis ordered his usual blue corn enchiladas ($9.50), filled with chicken and a spicy cottage cheese mixture, then topped with more cheese and red sauce. He swears by this entree, so I had to steal a bite. While the blue corn brought out a strong, natural flavor, the similar textures of the cheese, tortilla and sauce together felt mushy, and it threw me off.

I preferred my plate because the tortilla remained firm and stood out among the other flavors. Our entrees were served with rice and beans. Enchilada plates also come with dessert sopapilla — soft, plain, fried dough that’s served with honey. It was the right balance of sweet and savory to round out our meals.

THE DAMAGE

$25.71 (including tax, but not tip)

NEXT TIME

The topopo salad is massive, the Mexican counterpart to an American chef salad — lettuce, tomatoes, shredded chicken, cheese, jalapenos, peas and scallions, served on a bed of tortilla chips spread with frijoles, melted cheese and guacamole. Ideal for at least two.

‘Shiver of the Vampires’

10 | NOISE

THE LISTy

With the recent passing of French erotic horror auteur Jean Rollin, I have been revisiting some of his lesser-known works. 1970’s “Shiver of the Vampires” had completely eluded me, but it was worth seeking the film out, as it’s charms are many. A Rollin film is 95 percent imagery and atmosphere, so a plot synopsis is pointless. Suffice to say, the film is rife with gothic imagery, scenes by turns gaudy then psychedelic, and alluring beauties in various states of undress. And as with most of Rollin’s earliest films, his confounding attempt to meld the avant garde and exploitive results in a disjointed yet mesmerizing collision of styles. For fans of the macabre or cinema-as-waking-dream, “Shiver” is a sensual touchstone and a fantastic entry point into the uneven but always visually arresting world of Jean Rollin.

The Top 10 pop singles of 2010 Maybe it’s the economy. Or the iTunes “Singles rule!” business model. 2010 was a great year for singles, across the board. Here’s a look at some of the best.

The epic tribute to self-doubt and self-loathing set to a grand, pianodriven landscape is as lovely as it is desperate. His toasts are so well-crafted and sad-sack that you almost feel bad for West.

1. CEE LO GREEN,“FORGET YOU”

3. RIHANNA FEAT. DRAKE, “WHAT’S MY NAME?”

This ranting kiss-off disguised as a Motown classic is smart, touching and impossible to forget, even before he gets to the thrilling bridge of soulful screams of “Why?” And, yes, the expletivefilled version with the title we can’t print is way better.

This is near-perfect pop raised to high art when she quickens the pace during the “Hey boy” bits, singing those lines faster out of sheer excitement like a girl in love.

4.THE NATIONAL,“BLOOD BUZZ OHIO” The driving beat and big groove

make the generally unflappablesounding Matt Berninger seem, well, happy.

5. ROBYN,“DANCING ON MY OWN” A roller coaster of post-breakup emotions that Robyn somehow makes survivable through gurgling synths, an unstoppable beat and a brave delivery.

6. JONSI,“GO DO” Pure joy, as seemingly delivered by Icelandic sprites carrying piccolos and big bass drums.

7.TRACEY THORN,“WHY DOES THE WIND?” Mournful synths, Thorn’s gorgeous vocals and a whole lot of

distrust.

8. KANYE WEST FEAT. JAY-Z, RICK ROSS, BON IVER AND NICKI MINAJ,“MONSTER” So much greatness bouncing around until Minaj delivers a starmaking string of verses so incredible that even after dozens of listens it still amazes.

I’m in the middle of a new reading obsession, grown out of marathoning the final season of the Showtime series “The Tudors.” I’ve spent hours web searching and following wiki-trails, and am currently into my third book on the subject. Thus far my favorite piece of reading has overwhelmingly been “Wolf Hall,” the 2009 winner of the Man Booker prize (the British Commonwealth equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize). Since the interpretation of history depends entirely on where one’s sympathies lie, there are a variety of perspectives on Henry the VIII’s remarkable reign. Mantel’s historical novel focuses on the viewpoint of Thomas Cromwell, the upstart commoner who rose from being an abusive blacksmith’s son to the king’s foremost advisor. It’s all very Machiavellian and utterly fascinating, made all the more so by Mantel’s deft turns of phrase and unique style of writing. I was sad for the book to end, and overjoyed to hear that the author is working on a sequel.

Remember when wings were called wing dings? This was back before chicken wings turned into the bizarre phenomenon they are today, before national bar chains were dedicated to them and they became synonymous with beer drinking and football watching. You can certainly get your wings with beer and football at Art’s Bar in Lansing if you want to, and they are still listed as wing dings, which says a lot about the bar itself. Fad after fad has swept through bars big and small over the last decade, and though it’s probably been six years since the last time I stepped into Art’s, it appears not a single of these fads have touched the place. The same standard domestics are still on tap, the same legendary pizza is still being served, and shoopers of beer still sit on every table. If you don’t know what a shooper is, then you’ve clearly never been to Art’s. The trademark drink at this unpretentious Lansing bar isn’t a specific type of beer, but very special

beer vessel. The 32-ounce serving is somewhere between a stein and a goblet. Its ridiculous size and odd proportions make you feel absurd to be drinking out of in public, except that everyone else in the bar has one, too. And that puts you among pretty hearty company. Art’s was packed early on the Friday evening I visited at an hour when most bars are just receiving their first few customers. The crowd included about every age bracket and demographic, and it didn’t appear to be anyone’s first time there. “It’s a smorgasbord,” said Art’s employee Ganie Miteff of the typical Art’s crowd. “It’s a wide variety, but we have the greatest customers here.” While all of the food falls un-

Hook-up factor: The hook-up factor is low at Art’s, but I’m going to make the call that this is a good thing. Art’s strikes me as the kind of place where people are more concerned with how much extra pizza they’ll be taking home, rather than which person. New Year’s all about MSU Forget the parties, rest up for the big bowl game on Jan. 1

Oh, New Year’s Eve. The hangover from Christmas has long subsided and now it’s far too late to try and conjure up plans of grandeur — mostly because everything is either (1) booked or (2) so over-priced you’d think inflation rates for 2021 had already taken hold. I’ve been spoiled positively rotten for the past two years on Dec. 31 due to wedding invitations. (Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it: New Year’s Eve weddings are completely rad.) This year, sans nupDantonio tials to attend, NYE plans have taken a surprising backseat for me. My normal zeal for the changing of calendar years has been usurped by — you guessed it: MSU football! Rah! I’m serious; have you paid even an ounce of attention to any of the superfluous moneygrubbing “Insert-Sponsor-Name-Here” bowls? If you have, it’s only because you finally caved and shut off the holiday film marathon on TBS (nah). If you live anywhere in the 517, the big day for you is the first of 2011, because a certain BCS-snubbed team plays in the biggest non-BCS bowl at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Get overly hyped. You can bet that ESPN will be devoting some serious airtime to the much-storied MSU-Nick Saban connection (or lack thereof). I’m sure sideline reporter Holly Rowe will have some nifty scripted jabs to throw at both coaches during on-field interviews — and you can bet Mark Dantonio is ready with a few of his own. Alabama coach Saban and Dantonio are no strangers — the two are good friends. Dantonio credits Saban as his most influential mentor in the game; and Sa-

ban has thrown reciprocal adoration back all season for Coach D. It’ll be an interesting chess match to watch unfold; and MSU fans would like nothing better than to witness a Notre Dame-esque finish with Saban smiling sheepishly through gritted teeth after a loss. (Just got goose bumps at the very prospect, didn’t you?) We’ve lost our last four bowl games — Saban and if we’re hoping to win this one, we’ll need to do almost everything right. Mistakes against a team like Alabama (9-3) aren’t easy to overcome — and both teams will know that forced turnovers and special-teams play frequently make the difference in games matched this closely. MSU seniors have more wins than any four-year class in school history, and their capstone season garnered a Big Ten Championship and more wins in a season than anyone (including this writer) expected. You can trust that they’ll come out in Orlando on Saturday ready to stomp all over Crimson Tide and prove that even on the biggest stage, their class represents something different. By the way: if you’re looking for a prediction this weekend? I’d definitely take State to cover (Alabama is a 10-point favorite) … I’d make it MSU 34, ‘Bama 31. It’s been a pleasure to write about Spartan success in 2010 — and I can only hope the year ahead brings more titles, trophies and triumph for East Lansing.

The all-electric Nissan LEAF is powered by compact lithium-ion batteries, providing the power to drive at speeds up to 90 mph and deliver a zero-to-60 mph time of around 8 seconds. The LEAF has no transmission and does not need to shift gears as it accelerates, resulting in a very smooth ride.
