Dear La Pietra Family and Friends, As we close the door on a remarkably successful 2015–2016 school year, we are already opening doors to the future. Knowing this is my final annual letter to you is both sad and exhilarating. My term as a trustee will end in June 2017 and our wonderful Head of School will be leaving at the same time. Mahina and I have spent a combined 50 years at La Pietra. Those have been wonderful years that we wouldn’t trade for anything, but it is time to move on. Mahina will be stepping up to new challenges and I will be stepping down to full retirement. I know I speak for both of us in expressing gratitude and aloha for the tremendous support we have received over these many years. This support has manifested itself in many ways, however, most tangibly in the generosity of your gifts and donations. Once again, we’re proud of the La Pietra teachers, staff and trustees who have made a tradition of 100% support of the Annual Fund. Each year, parent and alumni participation continues to grow as our constituency becomes more involved in school programs and events. We’re grateful to all of you who make up our caring family. In order to allow our student families a one-time breather, the trustees decided that tuition would not be increased for the 2016–2017 school year. Thankfully, financial aid raised at HOOPLA 2016 and merit scholarships provided by generous donors, enabled us to continue to provide for student financial needs. Every student, whether they receive financial aid or not, receives benefits not covered by tuition. Your gifts make that possible. Many individual donors and foundations have given generously toward operations, endowment and special projects We thank you all. Most particularly, we wish to acknowledge the Trailsend Foundation and the Bromley family for the extraordinary commitments they have made to La Pietra. These special grants enable us to continue to provide our girls with the best possible education in a setting that is both stimulating and inspiring. Our heartfelt wish is that young women of Hawaii will continue to be empowered and enriched by their La Pietra experience as their “sisters” have before them for the past 51 years. Aloha pumehana,
Alice Guild Chair, Board of Trustees
Head of School Letter Aloha La Pietra ‘Ohana, As my tenure as your Head of School comes to a close, I am excited for the future of La Pietra – Hawaii School for Girls. A special elegance and legacy exists in the walls of this school, and I am confident our rich heritage of all-girls excellence will not only continue but will be rejuvenated under new stewardship in years to come. I am humbled by the great generosity and outpouring of aloha that this exceptional network of family and friends have shared over the last decade. You have my genuine mahalo nui loa for your support and I will always be inspired by what our enthusiastic and talented ‘ohana can achieve when we come together and combine our collective energies. This report serves as a confirmation of your steadfast belief in La Pietra’s vision to educate young women to lead a life of achievement and we are grateful. Every year the combined efforts of our families, alumnae, friends and community partners positively impact each and every student, and your gifts for the 2015–2016 school year is no exception. Your donations not only enable us to provide a first-rate education for our students, but also help us retain an outstanding faculty with a 7:1 student to teacher ratio, encourage over 70% of our student body to participate in forty different athletic teams, assist 100% of our students pursue higher education, offer 135 different courses and numerous student leadership opportunities! The value of an all-girls education is unmatched. We excitedly share the National Coalition of Girls’ Schools’ (NCGS) robust research that unequivocally supports the value of an all-girls educational environment, which aligns with La Pietra’s own mission. The comprehensive study of student attitudes, behaviors, and experiences reveal that girls attending all-girls schools are more likely to: • Have an experience that supports their learning • Be challenged to achieve more • Participates in activities that prepare them for the world outside of school • Feel that their opinions are respected • Engage more actively in the learning process • Have aspirations and greater motivation • Receive feedback more comfortably on assignments now and in college Thank you for making a real difference in the lives of La Pietra’s young women and for your confidence that we have cemented La Pietra’s position as a premier college preparatory school in the State of Hawai‘i. Mahalo,
Mahina Eleneki Hugo Head of School

La Pietra’s Special Events La Pietra’s two flagship events, HOOPLA and Sunset Jazz are an integral part of the La Pietra experience.
HOOPLA 2016 – A PASSAGE TO PARADISE For decades HOOPLA has been one of the premier fundraising events in Honolulu. HOOPLA was one of the first to incorporate an auction into its event and was also the first to use electronic bidding for all facets of the program. All proceeds from HOOPLA support La Pietra’s financial aid program, which provides tuition assistance for families who would not otherwise be able to attend our school.
