LM3 measures Kier’s spend in areas of with high levels of deprivation as defined by the Office of National Statistics. With the tool, Kier can track its local spend and also show the number of suppliers it has worked with in an area along with the employee count of the suppliers. This highlights how the spend is positively benefitting local communities and Kier can then work with clients to make sure future spend is effectively targeted.

The need for public sector suppliers to demonstrate their contribution to driving social value has been a key part of local and central government procurement since the Social Value Act was passed in 2012 and the government’s Public Procurement Notice 06/20 (PPN 06/20) embeds this even further. The benefit of this tool for Kier and its clients is that teams are able to pinpoint their spend and highlight where their projects have helped provide jobs and driven local spend.

Lisa Sanders, head of social sustainability at Kier Group, said: “At Kier, we are committed to supporting local communities across the UK. LM3 allows us to visually demonstrate the very real impact we are having through the projects we are delivering.

“Working with the New Economic Foundation, LM3 is a first for the construction industry and will help us achieve our social purpose of tackling inequality by giving individuals and communities the tools and opportunities to create brighter futures. This tool allows us to better allocate our spend, to positively impact areas with the highest levels of deprivation across the UK.”

Adam Wilkinson, CEO at LM3 Online, said: “It is important to better understand the impact companies can have from all forms of spending and investment. Working with Kier to design and build this brand-new tool will positively impact the communities that need investment the most.”

A Cradle to Cradle Certification was selected due to the rigorous testing process involved, as well as its strength in encompassing all aspects of sustainability. To be Cradle to Cradle certified, a product must excel in five separate sustainability categories: Material Health, Material Reutilisation, Renewable Energy Use, Water Stewardship, and Social Fairness. Sarnafil AT achieved a Gold rating in Material Reutilisation and Social Fairness, and is the first and only single ply roofing membrane to achieve a Cradle to Cradle® Silver Certification. A Cradle to Cradle certification can be the difference in securing a project, as a growing number of companies, including world-leading organisations like Google, use the certification when determining which products to use in their facilities. Using a Cradle to Cradle Certified Product like Sarnafil AT can also help architects hit sustainable development targets while providing a flexible roofing solution. It’s an adaptable and durable hybrid technology that combines the best properties of both elastomer and FPO membranes, and can be mechanically-fastened or ballasted. The environmentally-conscious option can be taken one step further when combined with a green roof. Sarnafil AT’s sustainability credentials are currently unmatched in the roofing industry; Sika is leading by example, and providing architects, specifiers and contractors with a solution that combines ease of use with a roofing system that promises a greener future for the industry.

Single ply membranes have existed for over 50 years, and have historically been a more sustainable option for the roofing industry. There have, however, been some complexities on the path to joining the circular economy that have proven difficult to overcome, including a reliance on plasticisers and chemicals such as chlorine and oils. Extensive work from Sika’s Research and Development facilities to find a solution has culminated in the creation of Sarnafil® Advanced Technology, a single ply membrane without plasticisers, oils, chlorine or heavy metals, that provides a truly groundbreaking step forward in sustainability for the roofing industry and the construction sector as a whole. After going to such innovative lengths to create a truly sustainable product, the need to verify its credentials with a reputed third-party organisation became apparent. As Sustainability Manager at Sika UK Sarah Peake highlighted, “With the increasing scrutiny on green credentials –which is only magnified by the introduction of the Government's Green Claims Code and the CPA’s Marketing Integrity Group’s Code for Construction Product Information – it’s not enough to just say our products can be recycled when it comes to the sustainability of a product. We know this new technology is more sustainable, but we want to prove it through external, independent verification. Transparency and integrity are key to the trust placed in our products, and sustainability is at the core of our values as a global supplier.”

Sustainability is at the heart of discussions at 2022’s UK Construction Week, which is only a reflection of its relevance to the industry right now. With increasing demand for improved sustainability credentials from clients, it’s a topic at the forefront of specifiers’ and architects’ minds – for Sika, it has been intrinsic to the company’s values for decades.

Sika is taking its commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals seriously, and Sarnafil AT was designed to align with UN-Sustainable Development Goal (UN-SDG) 12 (Responsible Consumption & Production) and UN-SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities & Communities). A Cradle to certificationCradlecanbe the difference in securing a project, as a growing number of companies, including organisationsworld-leadinglikeGoogle, use the certification when determining which products to use in their facilities.

ETHICAL AND SPECIFICATION:SUSTAINABLESARNAFILAT 09Construction UK Magazine - September 2022

Chris Ridge, TICA’s Technical Policy Manager, said all responsible companies should be able to provide current Euroclass fire test certification for “the complete range of polyethylene preinsulated pipework products.”

He added: “Looking ahead, we seek to challenge the wider industry to ensure that all pre-insulated systems meet the required standards. This should not stop at preinsulated pipework but should also include pre-insulated ductwork products.”

TRADE ASSOCIATIONS BESA AND TICA SOUND FIRE ALARM OVER PRE-INSULATED PIPEWORK

However, pre-insulated pipework systems typically use either PUR or PE insulants, which do not meet the fire performance criteria typically specified in building services applications.

Two leading trade associations have called for more rigorous checks on the fire safety of pre-insulated pipework installed in buildings.

The Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) and the Thermal Insulation Contractors Association (TICA) have issued a joint statement raising questions about the suitability of pipework normally used for underground and buried applications, such as primary heating networks, now being deployed inside buildings. They describe it as a “fundamental change in product application” which takes the products outside the scope of the quality standards normally applied to their performance. Considering the current focus on fire safety in buildings, the two bodies are anxious to draw attention to the issue. They explained that building services pipe insulation specifications typically reflect the requirements of BS 5422 to ensure full compliance with Building Regulations.

One of the important lessons learned from the Grenfell tragedy was that products may have been tested and certified, but not necessarily for the particular application in question.

Graeme Fox, BESA’s Head of Technical, said: “This is a critical fire safety issue and both bodies were determined to present a united front to help protect best practice in building services installations.

10 Safety, Security & Fire Protection Construction UK Magazine - September 2022

“In addition, the one-size-fits-all approach to insulation thickness typically undertaken by manufacturers of pre-insulated pipework simply does not allow for the required flexibility to meet individual specification requirements,” the joint statement said. Both bodies are particularly concerned about the use of coiled flexible polyethylene insulated piping systems.

“One of the important lessons learned from the Grenfell tragedy was that products may have been tested and certified, but not necessarily for the particular application in question. We would, therefore, expect all responsible supply chain firms to be able to provide details of how the Euroclass fire rating of the PUR/PE system was achieved and the arrangement of the insulants in the test to determine their exposure to heat and flame,” he added. “We would also expect them to be able to evidence compliance with BS 5422 heat loss/heat gain tables clearly.”

“We have increasing evidence that these systems are being installed in high-risk buildings, such as large multi-residential buildings.”

The statement reminds manufacturers, distributors, and installers of preinsulated polyethylene pipework systems that they have a responsibility to provide evidence of the suitability of these products for the specific application specified. Looking ahead, we seek to challenge the wider industry to ensure that all pre-insulated systems meet the required standards. This should not stop at pre-insulated pipework but should also include pre-insulated ductwork products. Specifiers are also urged to check on the thermal performance of the polyethylene system and to ask the supplier how it would meet the heat loss/heat gain requirements of BS 5422 and Part L of the Building Regulations. It is also vital that the product in question has the appropriate Euroclass fire rating, they said.

CARPENTRY SKILLS HELP BRING HISTORIC WALLED GARDEN BACK TO LIFE

12 LatestConstructionNews UK Magazine - September 2022

Carpentry students from Bradford College have kindly volunteered their services to help a community garden project at Yorkshire Water’s Esholt Hall site.

VISTRY CELEBRATES SUCCESS OF NEW DEVELOPMENT IN STAFFORD

The investment will ensure outstanding facilities are available for the children who are starting their academic life at Redhill Primary Academy, part of the Thomas Telford Multi Academy Trust.

Vistry is building a mix of two, three and four-bedroom houses for sale under its Bovis Homes brand at Partridge Walk, off Stone Road. The new neighbourhood is a joint development with Barratt Homes, which is building 350 houses on the 97-acre site, and is part of a wider scheme which is set to deliver 2,000 new homes in the area.

James Haigh, Technical Qualification Coordinator & Lecturer in Carpentry & Joinery at Bradford College, said: “There is no better experience for our students than working on a real project like this, fabricating on-site and working to real specifications. You often don’t see the real character of a student until you get them out of the workshop and expose them to real-life scenarios where they just flourish.”

CHILDREN GET A LESSON IN BUILDING AS NEW SCHOOL RISES OUT OF THE GROUND

The historic building is being renovated as a flagship Centre of Excellence for Yorkshire Water’s training academy. Bradford College students on the City & Guilds Technical Certificate in Carpentry are enhancing their skills by gaining work experience at the site and producing raised planters for a new walled garden.

Vistry Group hosted a celebration event for its suppliers to thank them for making the Partridge Walk development in Stafford a success. A selection of food and drinks were served to guests, who ranged from interior designers to electricians working on the 250-home development in the Beaconside area of the town.

Nursery children and teachers at Redhill Primary School in Telford visited the site of their new state-of-the-art nursery this week to see the build taking shape. The £1.4 million project is being led by Shrewsbury-based developers Morris Property. The team is two months into the new build phase of the contract, having completed the first phase to provide a temporary nursery and demolish the existing one. The new nursery hands over early in the New OverYear. the summer, the team will demolish the existing nursery building, to make way for the a single-storey, steel framed construction. The new nursery will feature a glass lantern roof light, sliding wall in the main hall to sub-divide the space and an impressive glulam timber canopy to provide cover for outdoor soft play areas.

Pictured on site are children (left to right) Kiai, Kaysan, Martha and Mason with Redhill Primary Nursery Lead, Liz Hayes and Morris Property Contract Manager, Ian Carswell.

The beautiful garden once supplied the hall with all its food. Now, work is underway to bring the space back to life. Students have worked alongside community arts organisation, Sponge Tree, following drawing designs and even making some planters wheelchair accessible.

During World War II, around 30,000 tonnes of bombs were dropped on the UK by the Luftwaffe. Approximately 10% of these bombs failed to detonate. So, where are they now? They could be lying dormant, buried beneath construction site. This unexploded ordnance (UXO) is dangerous – it’s designed to maim or kill. As UXO ages, it can become increasingly unstable. To assure performance and compliance, all dedicated fire doors, other than those to locked cupboards and service ducts, must be fitted with the necessary ironmongery components. This includes hinges, door closers, locks and latches.

To eliminate vulnerabilities, hardware, in accordance with the UK Construction Products Regulations (CPR) must be CE marked (or UKCA after the 1st January 2023) to prove fire performance, and it is a criminal offence to supply products that do not comply. Fire door closers for example, whether concealed or surface mounted, are required to perform what is considered an essential function in closing a door to completion from any angle into its frame or until the latch engages. In facilitating the closing motion, door closers play an active role in ensuring a fire door accomplishes compartmentation. Because of their significance, controlled closing devices must be tested to BS EN 1154 and fire rated to BS EN 1634. Upon application, a closer must also be compatible with a door’s existing mechanisms and in addition to CE marking, it is highly advised it should be approved by a third-party scheme such as CERTIFIRE, providing the detail needed for its application.

FIRE SAFETY

Daniel May, Director at Consort Architectural Hardware explores the close relationship between fire safety and ironmongery and how compliance becomes compromised without essential hardware components. Unpredictable and untameable, fire is a beast that we can’t afford to ignore. It doesn’t prejudice against any building type, and as we’ve seen most recently in Whitechapel, London, it can cause immeasurable damage and loss when fire safety isn’t prioritised. Fire safety itself is a complex topic, covering a wide range of subjects and themes, from prevention to containment and evacuation - all of which carry great significance when designing and maintaining a fire-safe building. For a building’s architects, specifiers, inspectors and owners, it’s imperative to provide an acceptable level of fire safety for occupants and visitors alike. And for this, fire doors play an integral role.

Daniel May

Recognised as part of a building’s passive fire protection system, fire doors are a means of escape and are tasked with compartmentalising smoke and fire during a fire incident. In doing so, they protect the property and its people for a specified time, most commonly resisting for 30 (FD30) or 60 (FD60) minutes. Yet, fire doors aren’t the only piece of the puzzle.

Each of these hardware components are designed to operate in tandem with a fire door – without them, the door is made redundant. In fact, the integrity of a fire door could immediately be compromised should one area become damaged or fail to meet strict performance standards.

HANDIRONMONGERY:ANDINHAND

14 Safety, Security & Fire Protection Construction UK Magazine - September 2022

Combined protection As is outlined by the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI), ironmongery and fire safety share a distinguished relationship.

Similarly, hinges and latches play an important role in ensuring the integrity of a fire door. Commonly, three hinges are applied to fire doors, and at all times must remain adequately attached, repressing any charring or damage to the door’s timber in the event of a fire. Locks and latches are also essential, assuring a door remains closed within its frame, and thus, provides an effective barrier in the event of a fire. Because of their significance, locks and latches must also be CE marked and tested to BS EN 12209, with many professionals, such as architects, also demanding CERTIFIRE approval for the hardware they use.

Whether in a commercial, residential, or institutional space, a functional fire door is paramount in delivering a building’s fire safety, but only when operating in tandem with ironmongery can it deliver its purpose.

15 Safety, Security & Fire Protection Construction UK Magazine - September 2022

Commonly, three hinges are applied to fire doors, and at all times must remain adequately attached, repressing any charring or damage to the door’s timber in the event of a fire. Whether in a commercial, residential, or institutional space, a functional fire door is paramount in delivering a building’s fire safety, but only when operating in tandem with ironmongery can it deliver its purpose. All stakeholders and responsible persons found throughout the supply chain must recognise this significant relationship between ironmongery and fire safety, or risk falling short of stringent fire safety standards. Because, simply put, door hardware is more than just a finishing touch, it’s a fire safety enabler.

Maintaining safety and compliance Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, should a building fall short in its fire safety practices, the associated party is under risk of receiving heavy penalties and fines. Compliance is a continuous process and so, fire doors and their fitted hardware must remain operational and effective throughout the entire lifecycle of a building. To preserve fire performance, regular maintenance is vital. Aside from being up to code, the operational functions of all door furniture items should be checked regularly, including any additional mandatory components such as the operating furniture, intumescent seals (designed to expand and hold the door within its frame in the event of a fire) and relevant door signage. If basic maintenance is neglected, a fire door’s operational life can be significantly reduced - even with the correct hardware in place. The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 recognises this, making it a legal requirement to ensure that fire resisting doors are correctly installed and adequately maintained to be fit to purpose. To keep the building protected, workplace environments for example, must designate a Responsible Person (RP) to undertake regular fire safety risk assessments, inspecting all elements of fire safety including the operation of fire doors. As part of ongoing risk assessments, regular maintenance periods are critical and provide Responsible Persons with an opportunity to review and repair any damage to a door’s working components. Should any hardware issues be raised, decision makers must act quickly and seek professional support to replace or repair the ironmongery until the door is once again fully operational.

EARLY AND OFTEN: THE ROADMAP TO COLLABORATION

Comments include: “A brilliant solution to a real problem”; “I’ve definitely found my Friday plaster. an old or new client, forming strong relationships is an absolute cornerstone of working in a collaborative way, and that starts with early Keyengagement.engineering constraints can be missed unless picked up right from the start, so having that early conversation can save clients significant amounts of time and money by preventing them from being led down the garden path.

Collaboration from a supply chain perspective is especially important when you are dealing with projects that span the whole breadth of engineering disciplines. The vast majority of projects Rodgers Leask works on – such as the Becketwell regeneration in Derby city centre and our continuing work with Rolls-Royce Submarines – have multiple disciplines involved, and this is where clients can unlock some value in terms of collaboration by bringing everything under one roof.

16 British Gypsum is reporting an overwhelmingly positive response and burgeoning sales of ThistlePro® FastSet Finish – its new rapid-setting plaster – in the first three months since its launch to the UK market.

A complete all-in-one bagged product, it also negates the need for plasterers to use additives or other methods to speed up setting times, a practice which can impact on overall plaster performance and potentially void the product guarantee.

It really comes down to a simple case of earlier engagement creating a better result all round.

British Gypsum’s ThistlePro range also features ThistlePro PureFinish, ThistlePro DuraFinish and ThistlePro Magnetic, which are designed to provide better indoor air quality, a more durable finish and the option of creating interactive spaces.

Introduced in April, ThistlePro FastSet Finish is a high-performance skim finish plaster, ideal for a wide range of repairs and use on smaller internal walls and ceilings due to its fast-setting attributes. It has proved a major hit with tradespeople across the UK, with dozens of plasterers taking to social media to sing its praises.

Key to this is valuing relationships between supply chain partners and holding each other to a high standard. For Rodgers Leask, the strength of our relationship with a certain partner is valued significantly higher than the cost of working with them, and it’s the same with clients we work for. This is proven through 90 per cent of our work now being repeat business and our level of service proving that there is an alternative framework for success achieved by offering quality over lowest Whethercost.itis

A MULTI-DISCIPLINARY APPROACH

THISTLEPRO® FASTSET

The idea of taking a more collaborative approach to construction is not exactly revolutionary – Sir John Egan’s Rethinking Construction white paper laid a blueprint for it nearly a quarter of a century ago –but in an industry with deeply entrenched behaviours, old habits die hard.

With the construction industry at a crossroads when it comes to tackling big ticket issues such as net zero, it is clear that old methods of working are no longer passing muster. Kriston Harvey, director at national engineering consultancy Rodgers Leask, believes that the best way to put projects in a place to succeed is through a collaborative approach, both with clients and throughout the supply chain.

For the industry to get into a scenario where collaboration is truly valued in achievement of issues such as net zero, there needs to be a seismic shift away from a “lowest price wins” mindset. While it is understandable for clients to sway towards the cost factor, it can permeate throughout the supply chain, so it is the responsibility of all within the supply chain to rethink our approach of how we work together – once one supplier starts putting price before progress, the domino effect begins.

The sentiments were echoed by merchants themselves, with feedback such as: “Branches that have taken stock are (saying) their customers love the product… it’s an easy sell to customers” and reports that stocks of ThistlePro FastSet Finish have sold out within just two hours of arriving in store.

While in many instances the product is being used for patching and repairs, merchants have also reported numerous examples of ThistlePro FastSet Finish being employed on other jobs where there is a tight ThistleProschedule.FastSet Finish typically sets in half the time of standard skim finish plaster, with no compromise on performance. This enables more rapid completion of projects, maximising customer satisfaction and allowing plasterers to move on to their next project sooner too.

With the Construction Playbook and Mosey Report pointing firmly towards more collaborative approaches being the construction industry’s future, the time has never been more right for consultants to look at their attitudes towards working with both clients and the supply chain. Only by doing this can we look to not only tackle the big challenges of the day, but also deliver best value for clients looking forward.

there are ways in which consultants can work collaboratively before entering the procurement process to ensure that local authority clients are getting the best of both worlds. Consortiums are becoming increasingly popular, and Rodgers Leask has recently found success on the ESPO 2664 Property, Building and Infrastructure Advice and Management Services framework by leading a cross-disciplinary group of four consultants.

for

Kriston Harvey From a client’s perspective, this minimises the external points of contact and brings an ease of communication that can help projects run more succinctly. Meanwhile, the consultant can leverage economies of scale, meaning that a multi-disciplinary firm can give clients more bang for their buck while overseeing a collaborative approach in the supply chain. This is particularly pertinent with private sector clients, where the absence of more formal procurement routes mean that relationships are forged more strongly and repeat work is more common.

Working as collaborativeonegroup –featuring project manager and cost consultant Bentley Project Management, architect Whittam Cox and mechanical and electrical engineers CPW –will mean that that public sector bodies can rapidly access all four practices’, bringing better value for money, fewer contact points and – crucially – a more efficient way of working.

With public sector procurement routes dictating how projects are awarded, there is often a significant weighting towards cost when it comes to consultant appointments via a traditional tendering However, process.

While collaboration in the supply chain may be easier to achieve with private sector clients, it is arguably more important to achieve in the public sector, where every penny is monitored and every process is scrutinised.

Padraig Delaney, London Regional Manager for Digital Construction at Sir Robert McAlpine, in his role working with the JV construction team, sees The Forge as a model for how future projects should be delivered: “The innovation-led approach taken by Landsec has allowed us to push the boundaries with our use of technology. The more data we have, the better our decision making. But, it is also important we have the right tools to help us get the most from the data. By driving these digital solutions, as we have done at The Forge, we’re transforming the way we will deliver future projects, identifying the value to each stakeholder and ultimately providing the best value for our clients.”

Currently buildings are responsible for nearly 40% of all global greenhouse gas emissions. Many countries have pledged to become ‘carbon-neutral’ by 2050 which is a huge task to complete, but one we in the UK are legislated to achieve. Up to 80% of our 2050 building stock is already built which will require updating in the next few decades, but today we can take a glimpse at what will be the new normal by 2050. The Forge aspires to be the first commercial building constructed and operated in line with the UKGBC’s net zero definition and energy reduction targets. It comprises two new office buildings and a public courtyard. Richard Sansom, Landsec, Project Manager for The Forge, appreciates the work being done by the project team: “We want to lead the sector in the adoption of new methods and technologies. However, the real value in innovation lies in its practical execution. As with anything being done for the first time, there are always going to be challenges along the way but we are in a great position to handle these thanks to the experienced and expert team working with us.”

Since setting up the Aluprof Office at the Business Design Centre in London, the company has rapidly grown their specification influence in the UK with their high-performance architectural aluminium systems. Further expansion of the company’s headquarters in Altrincham now provides specifiers with meeting facilities and an extensive showroom of commercial systems to view. With overseas growth across Europe spreading into the Middle East and firm roots already in the East of USA, the company has become a global player in facade supply.

But it also ensures compliant and achievable installations, helps to avoid extra costs and delays, and improves reputations. Quelfire hope to demonstrate that how by utilising tested solutions, technical support, and training offered, confidence in the industry can be restored. There will be six theatre stages across the NEC that will host a variety of presentations and discussions from leading industry experts. On the second day of the exhibition, Quelfire’s Sales Director, Craig Wells, will present their CPD training on Effective Passive Fire Protection for Gaps and Penetrations in Buildings. The training is generally aimed at specifiers; however, it is highly beneficial for all those involved in the design or management of installing firestopping solutions from architects to Craigsurveyors.said: “One of our biggest challenges, as manufacturers and suppliers of firestopping solutions, is to help people understand that just because they have always done something a certain way, it does not make it right or suitable. All products must be installed as they are tested. Although we are a relatively small team, we are hugely passionate about educating the industry and doing it right the first time around. Therefore, we encourage you to ask questions and get in touch to make use of our value-added services. We look forward to continuing these thoughtprovoking conversations at UK Construction Week! As new regulations come into force, changing the way in which the construction industry works, the urgency to get up to speed has never been more vital. Quelfire provide end-to-end support so that solutions are designed and installed as per the test evidence therefore, contributing to safer buildings.

This is Quelfire’s second show at UK Construction Week and a theme that they are in full support of! As part of their mission to educate the industry, Quelfire’s overarching message will be to support everyone on their firestopping journey from design through to Theyinstallation.wholeheartedly believe in early engagement in firestopping which ensures that firestopping contractors as well as other subcontractors, are engaged as early as the design stage. This is to guarantee that, when it comes to firestopping, the design and installation is in line with the manufacturer’s guidance and the test

The focus for this year’s UK Construction Week is ‘culture change’, which aims to highlight the need for ‘a new skilled workforce and putting safety and quality first’. With over 25,000 people expected to attend, it allows for like-minded individuals to come together and explore how the industry can implement new behaviours and best practices in fire safety. In light of the Grenfell Tower fire, the hard scrutiny the industry has come under, and new regulations coming into action, the topic ‘culture change’ is monumental as organisations from all over the country are set to exhibit and show their support in rebuilding construction attitudes.

• It’s not just what we do, but how we do it, that sets us apart from others in the industry.

Choose the best from the start

• Design led installations – we have the capabilities to consult and advise on design, whilst also completing the installation. This means you will not be left with a design that can’t be installed, and we help to engineer designs that have installation in mind, whether this be sympathy to the architecture, or designing for install time or minimal damage.

• We are expert consultants with control system experience who work with the best, so it’s safer not to compare us to other electricians (Ferrari vs. Ford).

External Lighting Light added to your garden is a great way to ‘extend’ the space from your home to the outside, creating an additional ‘room.’ As Astra Lumos put it, “The right lighting can illuminate your garden, adding a soft glow which brings to life an almost ethereal and magical space you can enjoy well into the night. From creating a safe path through the garden to highlighting textures and features, lighting can add both beauty and function to your outdoor space.”

• Research & Development – our unique R&D department enables us to develop custom designed solutions for the bespoke challenges our distinguished clients face.

ASTRA LUMOS - LIGHTING DESIGN AND INSTALLATION: LIGHTING DONE DIFFERENTLY

Finally Astra Lumos prides themselves on being different. The ability to design and install unique and bespoke lighting and electrical solutions. They will be at UK Construction Week in Birmingham in October this year so come along and find out how they can help you or your clients with any complex lighting or electrical issues.

Astra Lumos is an exclusive and bespoke lighting and electrical solutions company. They have been installing high-end lighting designs integrated with control systems since 2014 and although they have been designing bespoke lighting solutions within projects alongside installing, until their rebrand, they haven’t advertised this fact. With their new name and branding they are making waves and their existing clients have really got behind them. Do you know how lighting can affect colours, mood, and even the energy of a room? Have you thought about a bespoke lighting design for your next project or are you just assuming the architect or M&E company will take care of it? Are you tired of looking into your garden at night and seeing nothing but abyss? If you are asking these questions as your project is beginning to take shape, then Astra Lumos can help answer them. Based in the Cotswolds but serving clients nationally, Astra Lumos offer bespoke lighting and electrical designs with the huge benefit of being able to install the designs. Historically Astra Lumos would be given a design which would have quite a few “flaws,” due to the lack of installation experience by the designer. David Ritchie (one of the directors at Astra Lumos) is now chief designer. With nearly two decades of on the tools experience, Astra Lumos are confident their designs are able to overcome the “usual pitfalls” of a traditional lighting and electrical design. Internal Lighting Lighting can completely change the ambience of a room and affect all aspects of the space. From altering the colours of the soft furnishings, to changing the energy of the room, lighting is a hugely important aspect of interior and exterior design. One way in which Astra Lumos are really able to transform a room is by layering light with multiple circuits in the same room. Rooms such as the kitchen hugely benefit from this fine level of lighting control; a typical setup may be five different lighting circuits, allowing owners to utilise the space for a huge range of different activities.

ENVIROGRAF - A LEADING FORCE IN PASSIVE FIRE PRODUCTS 32 Construction UK Magazine - September 2022 UK Construction Week 2022 - Show Preview

Established in 1979 by MD Derek Ward, the Envirograf® brand quickly evolved to become a leading force in passive fire products. Having developed fire retardant and fire stopping products for numerous scenarios, the company’s reputation as an innovator and developer is widely recognised with many products unique to Envorgraf®. For example, they are the only company to make intumescent pipe collars in sizes that extend all the way up to a huge 900mm. From Intumescent paints that provide over 60 minutes protection on timber, steel and plasterboard, fire stopping products to intumescent seals and electrical fire protection, the vast range of products enjoys widespread international demand. Envirograf® coatings have been used in virtually all temples in China and, since the horrific bush fires in Australia, they have achieved the necessary Bush Fire Test required to help protect properties from such events and are now used throughout the country. Mr Ward says that, when it comes to passive fire protection, every risk must be considered to ensure that loss of life and property are kept to a minimum. While many people are aware of the importance of fire barriers in preventing or delaying the spread of fire, they do not always consider the implications when breaching the fire barrier, for example, to allow electrical wires or other services to pass through a wall, floor or ceiling. That is why a range of Envirograf® intumescent products has been designed, to safeguard the integrity of fire barriers by swelling to seal such gaps should the worst happen and fire break out.

Sister company, EnviroEcoWall Panels has been established to manufacture one of Mr Ward’s latest innovations, a pre-engineered, insulated, load bearing panel system designed to form a fireproof building envelope - a modern method of construction that is perfect for new build houses, bungalows and industrial projects. As the need for eco-friendly, cost-effective building methods becomes ever greater, this unique system combines structure and insulation into one prefabricated, thermally efficient component. Not only are EnviroEcoWall Panels protected from fire by Envirograf’s intumescent coatings, the buildings are also designed to cope with flooding as they are constructed on a unique metal sub-frame that can carry the structure from 150mm to any height off the ground and can be raised to a new level at a later date in 300mm intervals. The system further suits today’s conditions as the strict quality control during the off-site fabrication process ensures dimensional accuracy, helps to reduce build time and minimises waste on site. Additionally, the system does not require the significant amount of water consumption associated with more traditional construction methods. Using the same high-spec system, the company recently introduced a range of smaller buildings as a unique and costeffective way to gain extra space at home. Ideal for year-round use, they provide a designated environment for a light and airy garden office, art studio, home gym, hobby room or a relaxing garden retreat. In addition to standard models, the company offers a bespoke design service. For more details you can call 01304 842555 or sales@envirograf.comemail

The concrete market alone contributes to 1.5% of the UK’s carbon emissions. The need for eco-friendly building practices is becoming more urgent and has accelerated the pace of Research and Development (R&D) into how wonder materials such as graphene can make construction more sustainable. Materials like graphene can be added to building project plans due to the various benefits they provide. Despite being only one atom (~0.3 nanometres) thick, graphene is 200 times stronger than steel by weight. Once it is added to cement, it can increase the strength of the resulting cementitious composites by 30%

There are a variety of applications for a highly conductive material like graphene.

The same strategy can allow for the emerging application of solid-state heated roads. This use of graphene in concrete for roads will make it easier to clear ice and snow from motorways. Additionally, it can provide safer roads to drive on and save money and time. The future of construction Looking to the future, as industries commit to reaching net-zero and becoming carbon neutral, the construction industry must play its part in lowering its carbon footprint. With construction output showing no signs of slowing down we must make building materials and practices more energy and cost efficient. Investing in and utilising technological innovations such as graphene will be the way forward if the construction industry is to reduce its carbon emissions.

For the most part, construction output is dedicated to new builds- only 40% of it is used for refurbishment and maintenance. This further emphasises the need for durable buildings that do not require as much Concreteupkeep.istraditionally weak in tension. To remedy that weakness, steel is needed to reinforce concrete. Graphenebased admixes significantly increase the tensile strength of concrete, meaning the need for steel reinforcement can be reduced to achieve the same structural performance as normal concrete. A study conducted by the University of Exeter found that including graphene in concrete led to a 50% reduction of the required concrete material while still fulfilling the specifications for the loading of buildings. This added durability means that buildings are more resistant to adverse weather conditions and reduces the need for maintenance. Alongside this, decreasing the amount of construction material required will not only save organisations time on building sites but also save them money. There are estimates that using graphene-enhanced concrete can provide overall cost savings of 10-20% over standard concrete. Applications of electrically conductive concrete

A recent study conducted by Cambridge University indicated if the addition of graphene results in a 5% reduction of cement, the effect on global warming could be reduced by 21%. These results show a pathway for contractors to utilise advanced materials in building practices to lower the impact of construction on the environment that can be attributed to the introduction of raw materials.

The attenuation tank uses a patented brick-bonding and cross-bonding, geocellular structure to enable it to withstand the pressure and load from traffic and covering material. In addition to the sustainable element to the project, ACO’s StormBrixx solution also allows for easy maintenance and cleaning in future.

“A key feature of StormBrixx is the ability to easily get into the tank through manhole covers and clean the units of sediment and debris. The entirety of the tank is accessible at various points, making maintenance much easier over traditional tank systems.

Again, this helps to reduce operational costs for the local authority,” said Kersey.

ACO Water Management has designed and delivered a 4,500m³ StormBrixx attenuation tank to help prevent flooding at Lovell Homes’ Drummond Park estate. A mixed tenure development comprising of 412 quality homes, work at Drummond Park commenced in May Consisting2022. of 309 two, three, and four-bedroom homes for sale and 103 affordable homes for rent, the site required a large-scale solution to mitigate flooding from storm and surface water runoff. ACO’s leading StormBrixx attenuation system was specified and installed with a depth to invert of 4.5m, following a consultation between civils contractor Tithegrove and ACO. Measuring 56.4m long by 26.6m wide by 2.4m high, the tank consists of 13,254 StormBrixx SD units which are stacked together in three layers. With a total volume of 4,500m³, it allows stormwater to slowly infiltrate back into the ground and soak away. As well as the supply and delivery, ACO customised the design, creating a bespoke, stepped edge as the tank met with the boundaries of the site. A crucial aspect to the project was sustainable construction, and due to the innovative design of StormBrixx, the carbon footprint from transportation and logistics was significantly reduced. Alongside this, ancillary materials such as pipework and shingle were minimised.

Paul Stevens, Materials Buyer at Tithegrove said: “We are extremely pleased with the StormBrixx attenuation tank and the way Aaron and the team at ACO were able to step in and help us value engineer this project. We were impressed with the flexibility of the solution and how easy it is to use. Most of all, we are thankful that the solution helped us to stay sustainable through lowering transportation, loading and unloading and general logistics requirements.”

ACO SUPPLIES SUSTAINABLE ATTENUATION SYSTEM FOR LOVELL HOMES LUDGERSHALL 44 Drainage & ConstructionPlumbingUKMagazine - September 2022

Aaron Kersey, Sales Engineer at ACO, said: “When we were initially asked to consult on the attenuation tank for Drummond Park, they were already looking at a system that would require 64 truckloads of deliveries. With StormBrixx, we’ve managed to bring that down to just 16, vastly saving on carbon footprint, cost and storage requirements. “This is down to StormBrixx’s stackable design, meaning more units can be packed and delivered on a lorry. Not only this, but the unit is light and easy to handle by hand, so once delivered to site, there was no need to then use heavy machinery to lift or transport the products into position. This then meant that installation was much quicker too.”

The first task was to carry out an excavation to allow the installation of a new 7.2m-deep wet well chamber. To support this, 1,600 tonnes of spoil was removed to reduce the ground level by approximately 2m to accommodate an overpumping system with a working capacity of 5.5m-6m deep. A new haul road was also built with a geo-textile membrane and crushed stone to facilitate access to and from the main working area. Well points and water pumps were installed to control groundwater during the dig-out

The pumping station installation had been due to be a spring-to-summer project. However, the first phase of the works was brought forward to be carried out over winter months to support the construction of a large office building for a global insurance provider.

A new survey reveals that the majority of professionals in construction and the building trade are concerned about the environmental impact of waste entering the UK’s drainage system from construction sites.

While it is possible that manholes are sometimes incorrectly used for waste disposal, the cause of materials entering them is most often accidental. This was emphasised in the survey, with 96% of respondents saying that they’d welcome a solution which prevents silt, mud and litter from accidentally falling into drainage.

The new poll of 363 professionals who work on or for UK construction sites was carried out as part of a new study into the environmental impact of construction site waste by Sitestak, a leading provider of specialist drainage supplies and related Itproducts.foundthat 98% of building trade professionals are concerned that waste entering manholes on construction sites is having a negative impact on the environment and the water system. 74% believed the environmental impact of this issue was likely to be ‘very negative’, while 24% felt that the problem is ‘slightly Wastenegative’.that enters drains from construction sites joins the main sewage network, where it is screened and treated by water companies before being returned to rivers. However, during heavy rainfall wastewater that hasn’t yet been treated can ‘overspill’ into rivers and lakes. According to the conservation charity The Rivers Trust, sewage is discharged into rivers across the UK and Ireland on a daily basis due to overspill events. Data analysis by the Daily Telegraph suggests that untreated sewage gets released into rivers more than 1,000 times a day. Waste that enters the drainage system from UK construction sites is an increasing problem, as it is commonplace for silt, mud and litter to fall into manholes during operations. The issue is widespread, with 96% of survey respondents saying that they had seen, experienced or heard about this happening on building sites they have worked with.

Peter James, Managing Director of SiteStak commented: Our study shows that waste materials are frequently entering the sewage system from construction sites, which is obviously concerning for the environment and our rivers. “Most industry professionals in the poll seem to see this as a significant issue too, and we often hear from people on construction sites who are trying to prevent large quantities of waste from entering the drainage system. As a company we focus on creating products that solve problems, which is why we are looking into a solution to prevent waste from accidentally entering manholes.

The South West’s first Net Zero Carbon in operation out-of-town development is fast taking shape. Commissioned by CEG and delivered by Beard Construction, 1000 Aztec West in South Gloucestershire near Bristol will create a new benchmark for office spaces, and South Gloucestershire council leader Toby Savage has visited the site to see the rapid progress of the £17m transformation. The structure’s existing 1980s footings, frame and building structure have been retained, saving some 1.7 million kg of carbon and creating a pathway to a Net Zero Carbon Development. The savings have been made by a clever conversion of the existing steel frame and much of the preparatory work was devoted to shotblasting a cement fire treatment from the steel, which was then given a rust-proof Withcoating.the steel skeleton work complete, Beard is now removing the existing roof to create a new floor and roof, which will see the capacity of the building grow from 38,000 sq ft to 80,000 sq ft, creating space for an 850-strong Councillorworkforce.Savage, who is also cabinet member for the local economy: “South Gloucestershire is the economic powerhouse of the West of England and is a fantastic place to live, work and base a business. We welcome CEG’s confidence in this location, which, thanks to its excellent connectivity, is booming. This building is being redeveloped and modernised with sustainability in mind and is in line with our own ambitious goal of tackling the climate emergency by becoming carbon neutral by 2030. The 1000 Aztec West redevelopment fits into a wider picture of significant investment in office, residential and leisure facilities in this part of our district – from the thousands of new homes being built on the former Filton Airfield, to nearby landmark leisure facilities like surfing centre The Wave, Bristol Zoo’s Wild Place and the recently opened ice rink Planet Ice. Matt Cooper, director for Beard in Bristol said: “Beard thrives on ambitious projects like this one. Repurposing the existing structure has not been without its challenges, but the energy of the initial build has not been wasted and we have saved a huge amount of carbon.”

The company’s Bristol portfolio offers the highest-quality city centre and out-oftown workspace for start-ups, scale ups or corporate headquarters.

The Safety Awareness qualification must be refreshed every three years for a WJA water jetting operative’s card to be valid.

www.waterjetting.org.ukWebsite:

New digital training certificates launched by the Water Jetting Association will give users of water jetting services a new opportunity to instantly validate operative qualifications in the field. The new system replaces hardcopy certificates and gives both service users and water jetting contractors greater assurance that an operative’s qualifications are up to date and valid. A QR code printed on every new digital PDF certificate can be scanned to gain access to a qualification verification portal to instantly check the identity of the certificate holder and qualifications held.

The WJA will still issue each operative with a WJA card in hard copy format as these are often required to be shown at customer worksites. It is now looking to add the verification QR code to these cards as Valwell.Perrin, of North West Training Academy, a WJA training provider, said: “The WJA’s new digital certificates are a great idea. They’re going to save us a lot of time and are aligned with the requirements of the companies we provide training for.”

Solar-powered welfare helps users to slash fuel costs and on-site emissions With huge fuel price rises and an increasing need to make and report on carbon savings, the pressure is growing on the construction and infrastructure industries to move away from diesel and biofuel and find alternative ways to power the equipment they use. While potential solutions such as hydrogen are still facing cost and other barriers to adoption, UK manufacturer Boss Cabins believes it has found a viable solution for the welfare industry with its solar-powered Deep Green range of mobile and static welfare cabins and portable toilets.

Boss Cabins’ Managing Director, James Kearsey, says: “We are getting a fantastic response to these cabins from the major players in the construction and infrastructure sectors. They can recognise how our Deep Green 2030 range gives the welfare industry a product that truly reduces environmental impact while not sacrificing any of the performance you need or expect from a highspec welfare cabin. “We’ve incorporated sustainability targets on many different levels - carbon neutral operation; renewable energy; near zero emissions; minimal water use; low waste; longlasting build and materials; high recyclability - and we really do believe we have created the world’s most sustainable welfare range.” We are extremely excited that with this new range, we will be helping to make worksites much greener and less damagingenvironmentallyplaces.

Boss Cabins’ Managing Director James Kearsey describes the results they are seeing: “Over the past 6 months, we have seen incredible results from the 100s of Deep Green cabins in the field with almost all cabins being 100% powered by the sun. “Using the on-board remote reporting system, we can see that over this period, the solar energy production in all our Deep Green cabins in the field has consistently outstripped the cabins’ energy consumption. The data shows that the generators on these cabins have not run at all. No fuel used, no exhaust emissions produced - just pure, clean, free solar energy!”

All Deep Green cabins are built from stainless steel with a guaranteed lifetime of 25 years. Boss Cabins’ engineers have also considered the end-of-life impact of the cabins and selected materials with a high level of recyclability - the cabins are over 92.7% recyclable and rising.

“And even better, this success in removing carbon from the cabins’ operations can easily be monitored and reported for the purpose of ESG scoring, investor reports etc. using the SolarTrack remote telemetry system. Users can get 24 hour remote access to transparent information showing exactly what their energy usage is and what source it derives from.”

As the UK’s leading manufacturer of welfare cabins, Boss Cabins has always been at the forefront of environmental and other innovations, and now with their recentlylaunched Deep Green 2030 range, they are offering the construction, events and infrastructure industries a real proven way to make sure their welfare divisions hit these aforementioned environmental performance targets.

The Deep Green 2030 range includes mobile and static welfare units plus portable toilet block solutions. As well as solar technology, the units incorporate a unique rain harvesting and grey water recycling system which sees sterilised rainwater used for hand-washing and then re-used to flush the toilets. Other water-saving features are micro flush toilets and waterless urinals. Together, these innovations significantly reduce the need for service visits and their incumbent environmental and financial costs. In addition, the telemetry system also monitors water, waste and fuel levels remotely meaning service visits can be planned precisely when they are needed with no wasted trips.

HYPERTUNNEL TO DEBUT AT THE WORLD TUNNELLING CONGRESS AND RETURN TO BTS 56 TechnologyConstruction UK Magazine - September 2022

British underground construction innovator hyperTunnel will exhibit for the first time at the World Tunnelling Congress (WTC), 2-8 September 2022, in Copenhagen, Denmark and return to the British Tunnelling Society (BTS) Conference & Exhibition in London on 11-12 October, after formally launching its method to transform underground construction at the same event in 2021. At both shows, hyperTunnel will present a working demonstration of a section of its robot-led swarm construction platform. Visitors will be able to see ‘hyperBots’ working from within an underground pipe to conduct their various programmed tasks as part of a grid. The method, via which complete structures are built according to a digital twin, is designed to be substantially faster, safer, more economical and more environmentally friendly than current techniques.

“Our attendance at both shows reflects widespread industry acceptance of and interest in hyperTunnel’s solutions, from around the world. There is a genuine awakening going on in relation to the use of robots, digital twins and AI in construction – it’s not exclusive territory to hyperTunnel of course, but our advanced integrated package is now established as offering what the tunnelling and construction industries are aiming for in many existing and new applications,” said Jeremy Hammond, coCEO and co-Founder of hyperTunnel. hyperTunnel has grown significantly during the past 12 months and enjoyed a string of successes in terms of new investments, industry partnerships, talent acquisition, the completion of a full-size pilot tunnel in the UK. Photography by Campbell Rowley YOUR COOL: WHY BUILDING DESIGN IS KEY TO PREVENTING

In 2000, the university’s Department of Architecture and Built Environment launched Creative Energy Homes, an industry-funded project looking into innovative solutions that can make homes more comfortable and, crucially, carbon Lucelianeutral.added:

Recent statistics indicated that 3.6 million living rooms in England had overheated during the summer of 2018 and, more recently, the UK experienced its hottest temperatures on record in July 2022 when the mercury rose to more than 40 degrees in AndLincolnshire.now, theUK Health Security Agency has once again issued a heat-health alert for the week as temperatures are predicted to rise again, with some areas forecast to reach highs of 36 degrees by Saturday.

“Understandably, it’s not possible for us all to simply redesign our homes. Therefore, we need to redesign the way we think, particularly as we prepare for another heatwave, to ensure both comfort and safety.

“The seven-house development has provided a living test-site for leading companies such as E.ON, David Wilson Homes, Saint Gobain, BASF and more, who have worked alongside us to investigate the integration of energy efficient strategies and technologies into houses.

“As part of this, we have implemented several strategies to help keep the buildings cool, from simple, low-tech solutions, such as shading, insulation, and effective natural ventilation, through to more sophisticated solutions, for example, phase-change-materials, earth-air heat exchangers and evaporative cooling.

Lucelia Rodrigues.

The UK has the oldest housing stock in Europe, due to the sheer volume of buildings constructed during the industrial revolution and post-wars when quantity was more important than quality. Consequently, most of our homes are cold in the winter months and vulnerable to overheating in the summer months.

Designing high-quality homes that are comfortable all year round does not cost any more than the construction of a ‘traditional’ home – it’s all about clever design as opposed to expensive technologies.

“It is important to note that well-designed homes with highly-insulated envelopes that are comfortable and energy efficient in the winter months are also good at keeping the heat out in the summer, and technologies such as air-source heat pumps (ASHP) and mechanical ventilation and heat recovery systems (MVHR) can also aid cooling. If you are buying a new property or refurbishing yours do ensure you ask your supplier how you home will keep cool through the heatwaves that are sure to come.”

Lucelia Rodrigues, Professor of Sustainable and Resilient Cities at the University of Nottingham, discusses why building design is crucial when it comes to keeping homes Shecool.said: “Clever design means understanding and responding to context, including climate conditions. Most importantly, today’s designers need to make sure that buildings are climate resilient and are constructed with future weather scenarios in mind.

KEEP

“While it might seem counterintuitive, closing windows during particularly high temperatures can, in fact, help keep the warm air out. Try to ventilate your home at night and in the very early morning instead when the air temperature is cooler. Additionally, stopping the sunshine from passing through the window can prevent the greenhouse effect, so it is important to shade the outside using shutters, brise soleils, or cleverly placed plants – even cardboard will do in particularly extreme weather. Finally, for any homeowners with an unshaded conservatory, open everything up, particularly high windows, to let the warm air escape.

A new public park in the heart of Sheffield has got off to a flying start before construction work has even been completed.

Named after Sheffield’s first Chief Fire Officer, Superintendent John Charles Pound, the new park is set to be completed in early 2023. The landmark green space will feature event space, imaginative play spaces, climbing features and areas for relaxing.

Henry Boot Construction is transforming the former fire station site between Rockingham Street, Wellington Street and Carver Street into a beautiful green urban park, as part of the £470m Heart of the City development programme.

Monitors from the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS), who inspect construction sites to check employee wellbeing, environmental impacts and respect for the community, gave Henry Boot Construction’s site at Pound’s Park full marks in the three main categories.

Appointment serves as the second, repeat appointment in quick succession following the announcement in January of a project to build 500,000 sq ft across three units at a site in Peterborough.
