ELEVATE PROPERTY GROUP APPOINTS BODE CONTRACTING TO BUILD ITS £50M SILK YARD SCHEME IN DERBY

The developer of a £50m property scheme in the centre of Derby has appointed an East Midlands construction specialist to deliver the project over two years.

Elevate Property Group, which is responsible for the iconic Trent Bridge Quays development in Nottingham, has selected Bode Contracting to build the 258 apartments that will offer high quality, affordable city centre living for young professionals, couples, and downsizers.

Steve Dodd, managing director of Elevate Property Group, commented: “We have built a very strong partnership with Bode Contracting.

“They have just finished The Priory House Development for us in Birmingham and are currently

working on the second phase of our Trent Bridge Quays development in Nottingham.

The company have always impressed us with the quality of their build and ability to meet deadlines, especially with the well documented supply chain disruption we’ve seen in construction in recent years.”

The Silk Yard, which has been designed by architects Corstorphine & Wright, is the first time Elevate Property Group has developed in Derby and continues the firm’s desire to bring historic city centre sites back to life through high quality residential developments.

Bode Contracting will start work this month and the construction of the three apartment blocks will take two years to complete.

UK CONSTRUCTION AND REPAIRS INDUSTRY FACES PERFECT STORM DUE TO ‘ALARMING’ SKILLS GAP AS TRADE SECTOR VACANCIES HIT RECORD HIGHS

The new UK Trade Skills Index 2023 reveals an ‘alarming’ skills gap engulfing construction sector – with demand for skills outstripping supply, wage hikes for hard-to-find tradespeople, higher household costs for repairs, and Government housebuilding targets missed.

New report is released ahead of the launch of two major new projects being spearheaded by Checkatrade.com and HomeServe founder and entrepreneur Richard Harpin to get more young people into trades

The UK needs almost ONE MILLION new recruits in trades and construction over the next decade just to keep pace with demand, and with vacancies in the sector reaching record highs the industry is facing ‘a perfect storm’, new research has revealed.

The new report has highlighted an “alarming” skills gap engulfing the construction sector over the coming 10 years, with a drastic need for new recruits in trades and construction by 2032.

Of the 937,000 tradespeople needed to meet demand within the next decade, it said nearly a quarter of a million - 244,000 - must be qualified apprentices in order to prevent skills gaps worsening.

The UK Trade Skills Index 2023 has been commissioned by tradesperson directory Checkatrade.com and undertaken by leading independent macro-economic research firm Capital Economics.

The skills gap is being exacerbated by an ageing workforce, an exodus of EU workers post-Brexit, and the cost-of-living crisis.

The report’s findings have been described

by entrepreneur and investor Richard Harpin, the founder of HomeServe, which acquired Checkatrade.com in 2017, as both “urgent and alarming”.

Together, Richard and Checkatrade.com are spearheading a series of new projects aiming to tackle the challenge, focused on school leavers and young people aged under 25.

In March, they will unite to launch “Get In”, a new campaign aimed at getting thousands more young people aged 16 to 25 into trades careers through apprenticeships. Get In will seek to capture young people’s CVs and connect them to opportunities within Checkatrade.com’s membership base, as well as large trade employers and SME trade businesses. The new campaign will be piloted in the South East before a planned national rollout.

UNITED LIVING WINS

FURTHER £144M NORTHUMBRIAN WATER GROUP CONTRACT

United Living Group, the provider of infrastructure, housing, and property services, is pleased to announce its subsidiary United Living Infrastructure Services (ULIS), has been awarded a further contract with Northumbrian Water Group (NWG) for construction and engineering works worth approximately £18 million a year.

The four-year contract has an option for a further four years and will see ULIS continue its partnership with NWG which began in 2005 (under its previous name Fastflow).

ULIS will continue to deliver network improvements, such as mains replacement, lead replacement and connections for new housing and industrial developments; and repairs and maintenance, working in partnership with NWG to ensure the resilience of the network into the AMP8 regulatory period.

In addition, ULIS will now undertake backfill and reinstatement following maintenance work, and will be one of three suppliers who will undertake repairs resulting from mains failures.

This additional work means that ULIS will be creating 20 additional places on its Water Network Operative Apprenticeship programme.

PLANS TO LOOSEN IMMIGRATION BARRIERS WILL BOOST CONSTRUCTION, SAYS FMB

The Government’s proposed loosening of immigration rules will be a positive boost for the construction sector, which is struggling to recruit enough workers, says the Federation of Master Builders (FMB).

Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB said: “The Government’s proposal to allow more foreign workers into the UK will help address the current skills shortages in the construction industry. The construction sector needs tens of thousands of new entrants every year to meet current demands.

“The FMB and other industry stakeholders have called on the Migration Advisory Committee to review the Shortage of Occupation List and to include more trades such as bricklayers and carpenters to help boost economic growth.”

Berry continued: “In the recent FMB State of Trade Survey, 48% of small builders reported being in favour of increased immigration provided this was underpinned by better investment in skills training.

With core skills in short supply, as evidenced by the fact that around a third of FMB members are struggling to hire carpenters and bricklayers, this is causing 60% of jobs to be delayed, curtailing the ability of the building industry to grow.

“While immigration will help grow the construction sector, there still needs to be investment in UK-based training to train the next generation of builders.”

TOWER HAMLETS COUNCIL AND BOUYGUES UK REVIVE EAST LONDON’S HISTORIC LANDMARK BUILDING

Bouygues UK has completed construction on the new Tower Hamlets Town Hall in Whitechapel, in partnership with Tower Hamlets Council. The partners have breathed new life into the former Royal London Hospital building on Whitechapel Road and brought the striking Grade II listed building back into community use.

The new Town Hall will provide over 1,500 flexible workspaces plus a range of meeting rooms and welfare facilities for council staff and other partners.

At its core it will be an accessible environment. Dedicated public use, the ground floor will offer an open, local presence atmosphere bringing people together and enabling them to access council services in one place.

The building which has been vacant since 2013, is one of London’s oldest

historic landmarks and has been at the heart of the borough since it was opened to patients in 1757. Bouygues UK worked closely with Tower Hamlets Council and Historic England to preserve the integrity of the building in the designs and during construction work and restore many historic features. The former hospital’s iconic street elevation has been restored with a new public entrance on the ground floor of the Grocers’ Wing.

Bouygues UK had to be meticulous in their planning for the proposed replacement and refurbishment of many historical features, in particular the heritage windows, chapel and porticos. Working alongside a consultant and subcontractor team, they ensured the colour, detail and glazing approach to the replacement of these features were an exact match to the originals.

MORE UPFRONT FUNDING NEEDED TO HIT HOUSING TARGETS, SAYS BENTLEY

One of the main factors preventing the UK from delivering large-scale housing effectively is that housebuilders are not fully equipped to fulfil the role of ‘master developer’ due to lack of up-front funding, according to the managing director of one of the country’s leading project management consultancies.

Jonathon Bentley, who heads up Bentley Project Management, believes that most housebuilders aren’t inclined to invest in the infrastructure required to build out major urban extensions due to the high level of risk and the lack of immediate return-on-investment.

Bentley - whose company is currently working on schemes to deliver infrastructure for more than 35,000 new homes - says that this creates a huge

obstacle that needs to be navigated and is a much bigger challenge than simply the much-maligned planning system.

“What we are seeing is that typically, housebuilders are looking towards smallscale schemes that can deliver a good return on investment fairly quickly,” said Bentley.

“However, when it comes to the kind of major schemes that we as a country need to hit housebuilding targets, the related infrastructure – and the upfront funding that is required – strangles the speed of development.

CADDICK COMPLETES UK’S MOST SUSTAINABLE HEALTH CENTRE

Caddick Construction has completed United Healthcare Developments’ state-of-the-art, four-storey, healthcare centre in Carlisle, making it the most sustainable and energy efficient primary care centre in the UK.

RWE APPOINTS LOCAL HUMBER BASED FIRM TO COMMENCE GRIMSBY HUB CONSTRUCTION WORKS

RWE has appointed Humber-based firm Hobson & Porter to complete the construction of its new state-ofthe-art operations and maintenance facility known as the Grimsby Hub. The multi-million pound contract includes an extension to the existing Triton Knoll Offshore Wind Farm operations base located at Grimsby’s Royal Dock, and includes the creation of a new Centralised Control Room (CCR) to oversee the operation of the vast majority of RWE’s UK Offshore

portfolio, helping to cement Grimsby’s role as a leading location for the UK’s offshore wind sector.

RWE announced the creation of the Grimsby Hub back in 2021, marking a major strategic commitment to the UK’s east coast. As well as Triton Knoll, RWE’s 1.4 gigawatt (GW) Sofia Offshore Wind Farm, currently under construction, will also locate its operations and maintenance activities to the new hub in the future.

Building work at Carlisle Healthcare South Hub began in 2021 and has seen the creation of a BREEAM Outstanding development, with a large proportion of the building’s power supplied by renewable energy through rooftop photovoltaic panels.

Determined to address the energy intensive needs of primary care facilities, family-run business, United Healthcare Developments, brought forward designs for a more sustainable healthcare facility.

The building’s energy performance is rated -3 / A+ making it carbon net zero. The building envelope has been uniquely designed to the highest levels of efficiency, negating the need for a traditional heating system and avoiding any reliance on fossil fuels.

Each habitable room has a constant turnover of fresh air, creating an exceptionally comfortable working environment for the building users.

KIER TO DELIVER NEW NET ZERO CARBON TEACHING BLOCK

Kier has been appointed by Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council to build a new £25m net zero carbon teaching block in south Wales.

The Hawthorn All-Through School project will deliver new and exciting facilities for staff and pupils from Heol y Celyn English Medium Primary, Hawthorn Primary and Hawthorn High.

It has been designed to achieve net zero carbon in operation though the installation of on site renewable energy sources such as air source heat pumps and photovoltaic panels alongside purchase of renewable electricity from an energy supplier.

Three of the school’s existing buildings will be demolished to make way for a new teaching block. One of these buildings is the old caretaker’s house, with the stone from the Victorian building used in the building of the new structure.

The new school will include 27 classrooms, a staff room, offices, reception area, therapy room, library, ICT suite, meeting rooms, DT and music areas and two new multi-use games areas, which are in addition to the existing one and current all-weather pitch.

A new car park and pick up-drop off spaces will also be built as part of the project, as well as a designated bus drop off zone.

Jason Taylor, regional director at Kier, said: “This project presents a unique opportunity to provide not one but three schools with state-ofthe-art facilities which will be a significant asset to the community of Pontypridd for generations to come. With the recently completed Ffynnon Taf Primary School just 10 minutes down the road using a nearby hot spring to heat its classrooms, this project further demonstrates our commitment to providing sustainable buildings in south Wales.”

Procured through the SEWSCAP framework, work is expected to be completed in 2025.

LEVELLING UP FUNDING UNLOCKS NEWCASTLE LEISURE CENTRE PROJECT FOR WILLMOTT DIXON

Willmott Dixon’s team in the North East has been appointed to develop a £26m state-of-the-art leisure facility for Newcastle City Council in West Denton.

The company has been procured through Pagabo’s Major Works Framework to build Outer West Leisure Centre after the project received almost £20m from the Government’s Levelling Up Fund.

It will replace the former West Denton Pool and existing All Saints Sports Centre, which have served the local community for over half a century, with a facility that includes a 25-metre eight lane swimming pool,

Outer West Leisure Centre is expected to attract over 500,000 visits per year and generate 27 new full-time jobs while providing training opportunities for local people.

The project will deliver a social return on investment equivalent to 22% of the project value for local people in Newcastle.

A key aim will be to develop local skills and education in addition to planned visits from local schools and the creation of 100 apprenticeship hours. Willmott Dixon will also run two Building Lives Academy programmes for young people, aged 16-25, no longer in the education system and currently not working or being trained for work.

Willmott Dixon’s local teams are at the forefront of generating local prosperity and enabling the Government’s Levelling Up aspirations. Locally, it has also delivered several projects that have driven economic growth, including renovation of the iconic Globe Theatre in Stockton-on-Tees, and the Feethams House office development in Darlington which will be a base for HM Treasury.

GLENCAR ANNOUNCES COMPLETION OF FOUR-UNIT INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT FOR ST. MODWEN LOGISTICS IN NEWPORT

The new 116,000 sq. ft sustainable scheme which was developed speculatively is the third development to date to be recently delivered by Glencar for St. Modwen Logistics, with one unit of 17,000 sq. ft already pre-let.

Glencar, a leading UK construction company that was recently ranked amongst Europe’s fastest growing businesses, has today announced the completion of four new high quality, sustainable warehouses totalling 116,000 sq. ft for leading logistics developer and

each unit, as well as encouraging greener ways of commuting through the inclusion on EV charging points and dedicated cycling routes.

St. Modwen Park Newport is strategically located to provide excellent connectivity to South Wales and South West England, with Junction 23A of the M4 motorway within two miles of the park via Queen’s Way, and Cardiff and Bristol reachable within 12 miles and 30 miles respectively.

The estate and surrounding area benefit from the de-tolling of the Severn Bridges, further enhancing its accessibility by road.

The delivery of these warehouses takes St. Modwen Park Newport to c.345,000 sq. ft of warehouse space and is already home to the likes of Amazon, Genpower, CAF and Mitel. Phase 4, which comprises an additional 263,000 sq. ft of best-inclass logistics space, is due to complete in Summer 2023.

The largest project of its kind ever undertaken in Canada – the expansion and restoration of the historic Canadian Parliamentary complex in Ottawa – is expected to take ten years to complete.

After careful planning and extensive consultation, this substantial project, which is predicted to cost several billion dollars, has been given the green light.

The project involves the renovation of the entire Parliament complex which was originally completed in 1860 and subsequently rebuilt after a fire in 1916.

The complex is made up of a Central block, an East and a West wing, together with a 302-foot-tall Peace Tower and surrounding grounds that face the Ottawa river and overlook the city.

More than 600 individuals from leading engineering, design and construction companies across the country will participate in the work.

HOK Architects, together with other leading suppliers, has formed a joint venture – Centrus – which will be working on the Centre Block project for the duration of the renovations.

For every 1% of waste elimination in operatives’ tool-time, the industry gains six minutes a day or half an hour a week. According to the CITB, there were 2.69 million construction workers in the UK at the start of 2022.

This equates to 65 million hours annually at £30/hour, which is a potential added value of £2bn (or reduction in costs/year).

The industry only needed a 4% reduction of WTT to counter the inflation cost of labour (£8bn) in 2022, assuming that 35% of construction costs were labour.

HINKLEY POINT C: REACTOR ARRIVES ON SITE

The first new nuclear reactor for a British power station for more than 30 years has arrived in Somerset.

At just 13-metres long and weighing 500-tonnes, the “reactor pressure vessel” will create the heat needed to make steam for the world’s largest turbines.

It is the first of two nuclear reactors which will be installed at Hinkley Point C. Each reactor will help provide enough low carbon electricity for 3-million homes and will be vital in helping Britain achieve Net Zero and stronger energy security.

The reactor, made by Framatome in France, comes from the same factory which made the last nuclear reactor for a British power station at Sizewell B in Suffolk. It became operational in 1995.

The reactor first arrived in Britain at Avonmouth Docks in Bristol before being transported by barge to Combwich Wharf on the River Parrett in Somerset. The final journey was a 5-hour trip for 4 miles by a transporter to its permanent home on the construction site.

The arrival of the reactor marks a significant milestone for Hinkley Point C, where more than 8,000 workers are now on site every day. It will be installed in the reactor building after the dome is lifted into place.

EVERTON STADIUM PROJECT DEVELOPS LOCAL TALENT THROUGH APPRENTICESHIPS

Through its construction partner Laing O’Rourke, Everton is proud to be helping nurture local people undertaking various apprenticeship programmes.

There are currently 66 apprentices working on or towards the build of the stadium, applying their skills in various fields.

Trade and technical apprentices work in areas such as formwork, steel fixing and carpentry, while colleagues on Laing O’Rourke’s Early Talent Professional Apprenticeship Programme are studying disciplines including but not limited to construction management, engineering and quantity surveying.

The number of apprentices working on the site in north Liverpool,

which is the one of the largest private developments in the UK at present, will only grow as more supply chain partners are introduced in the coming months.

In addition to the people employed by Laing O’Rourke, many of the contractors on site also work with apprentices.

An example of this is Dylan, who as part of a three-year course with Summit Scaffolding started with smaller duties like oiling fittings and organising materials.

His schedule involves visiting a scaffolding training centre in addition to his on-site training at Everton Stadium, where he has been able to undertake tasks from simple edge protection to complex heavy duty design scaffolds.

Cameron, 22, explained why he chose to start a level two apprenticeship in formwork and how he is finding it.

“I have been in an array of jobs from landscaping and construction to insurance and I always felt like I had more to give.

“What better way to do that than to apply the knowledge I already had to once in a lifetime opportunity to help build a football stadium almost on my doorstep.

“Working for Laing O’Rourke has been nothing short of a dream come true. Staff and contractors from top to bottom have made me feel so welcome and have helped me develop in many ways.”

JONES HOMES DONATES VOUCHERS TO HELP CHILDREN AT BROMLEY CROSS SCHOOL CELEBRATE WORLD BOOK DAY

Jones Homes has found a novel way of helping a school in Bromley Cross celebrate World Book Day on March 2.

The housebuilder has donated £155 to pay for book tokens for all 31 pupils in Year 5 at St John the Evangelist RC Primary School in Darwen Road.

The developer is building 57 new homes at The Grange at Last Drop Village, which is less than half a mile from the school. Catherine Wilding, a sales advisor at the Jones Homes development, located off

Hospital Road, visited the school to deliver the £5 vouchers.

Lesley Jackson, Headteacher at the school, said: “We are really grateful to Jones Homes for supporting St John the Evangelist RC Primary School and it was lovely to welcome Catherine to the school so she could present the book tokens to the pupils in our Year 5 class. Reading plays a vital role in children being able to access the whole of the curriculum, as well as helping to nurture empathy and imagination. This donation will help the pupils continue to develop their reading skills – and enjoy new stories.”

TWO ROKBAK RA30S WORKING ON MEGA USA PIPELINE PROJECT

Two Rokbak RA30s are proving vital to the largest ever pipe installation of its kind in Utah, America.

When Utah-based contractor BHI was awarded low bid on a three-mile stretch of canal essential to the irrigation around the largest city in Uintah County, in the north-eastern part of the state, they knew that extensive excavation and backfill would be on the cards and that it would require the most robust and reliable equipment.

A hive of activity in the Beehive State

BHI has been tasked by Uintah Water Conservancy District to enclose a 78” High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) pipe across a vast portion of the Steinaker Service Canal near the city of Vernal. Owing to a water shortage over the past several years, the Uintah Water Conservancy District has been working to improve provision to the surrounding area, with the Steinaker Service Canal Enclosure Project. The existing channel is being converted into a pressurised pipeline to provide a firm water supply to land in the surrounding Ashley Valley, with the aim to minimise and even eliminate loss of water through seepage and evaporation, maximising the amount of water available for irrigation purposes. Upon completion, the canal enclosure will be the largest diameter HDPE pipe installation in the United States of America.

BHI is self-performing the entire scope of the project, which includes site preparations, excavation, pipe installation, back-fill and restoration of the canal. To handle the large-scale earth-moving, BHI needed articulated haulers that would be up to the challenge, day after day, in an intense six-month timeline.

Operating with ease

Rokbak dealer Rasmussen Equipment, of Salt Lake City, supplied two RA30s to BHI on a rental-purchase option in September 2022. The haulers were received so positively on site that the purchase was completed before the end of the year.

The RA30s are tasked with transporting rock and rubble to excavate the area in order to install the pipe, later they will support with the subsequent backfill. With the capacity to transport a payload of up to 28 mt (30.9 t), a maximum engine power of 276 kW (370 hp), a heaped capacity of 17.5mᶟ (22.9ydᶟ), and a maximum torque of 1880 Nm @ 1400 rpm, the Rokbak RA30 can be relied upon to all-weather-operate, transporting loads effectively and efficiently, with optimal traction in difficult terrain and combating steep inclines with ease.

“The RA30 is a top-performing machine,” says BHI operator Reese Shultz, who has already clocked up over 2,000 hours alongside colleague Dustin Gardner in the two RA30s since work commenced in September. “It’s fuel efficient, powerful and with features like the tailgate helping to maximise load retainage as well as multiple reverse gears enabling quick cycle times, it’s been designed for productivity. It also has excellent mobility, it’s relatively narrow (10ft 6in at its maximum width) which is hugely beneficial in confined job site spaces.”

“One of the first things I noticed when I started using the RA30 was that it has proper visibility, from a comfy seat, in a quiet cab and the HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) system works really well,” explains Dustin.

It’s a real solid ride and it’s comfortable to operate over various ground conditions.

It’s not hard to see why. Cushioned bump stops on the steering cylinders reduce strain on the operator over an extensive shift and a 45° steering angle at either side creates a turning radius of just 27ft 9in (8,470 mm), resulting in superior manoeuvrability. There is a spacious, ROPS/FOPS-compliant, pressurised cab. Smoother gear shifting accentuates these levels of comfort, alongside other benefits like faster cycle times, lower fuel consumption and reduced carbon emissions.

HOW THE PLANT HIRE INDUSTRY IS WORKING TOWARD A MORE SUSTAINABLE GOAL

The UN has recently warned that if global warming is not halted soon, as many as half the species living on land could become extinct, malnutrition in parts of the world will likely become widespread, and extreme weather events will become increasingly common.

With news like this, and commitments from the UK Government to reduce emissions by 68% by 2030, it is no surprise that the plant industry is witnessing an increasing demand for a shift toward more sustainable solutions.

There has never been a more crucial time to invest in renewable energy and clean technology especially within the construction industry which makes up almost 40% of the world’s CO2 emissions.

Sectors like plant hire, are seeking innovation through clean technology to help the construction industry reduce its carbon footprint. In the past five years, we have seen consistent improvements in electric vehicles in terms of technology, battery life, and accessibility. We have also seen a shift toward cleaner fuels such as HVO and hybrid machines that can bridge the gap between capabilities and low carbon emissions.

Leading wet civil engineering firm Land & Water, and its Plant Hire division, has recently purchased the first batch of Hitachi ZX130-7 super long reach excavators in the UK. This machine comes with improved fuel economy delivering up to 9% less fuel consumption, provides reduced life-cycle costs due to the Stage V-compliant engine, and has a fully fitted ECO gauge that allows operators to control fuel efficiency. The Plant Hire division’s revolutionary

fleet also includes the brand new Kobelco SK210 Hybrid 15m Long Reach Tracked Excavators. These machines include the ability to use HVO fuel which is up to 90+% carbon neutral, eco mode and machine idle cut-offs reducing emissions, as well as onboard telemetry that reports carbon saving and fuel usage.

TWO RAIMONDI FLAT-TOPS AT WORK ON NEW BUILDING CLUSTER IN TORONTO

Straw Construction Group puts one Raimondi MRT234 and one MRT294 to work for urban redevelopment project in Greater Toronto Area

JESS Equipment Inc., the Canadian equipment management company operating under the Straw Construction Group, supplied two Raimondi flattop tower cranes to a new building cluster. The jobsite, situated in North York, part of the Greater Toronto Area, is for the construction of three new rental buildings across the street from Yorkdale Shopping Centre.

“The decision to utilize these two Raimondi’s on this important project, is based on the superior lifting capacity of the machines, as well as the fast lifting and loading speeds,” said Sante Paglia, Director of Jess Equipment Inc.

Paglia added that due to the dimensions of the site and the project’s tight

completion deadline, it was essential to choose high performing machines with significant hoist speed.

The MRT234 presents a maximum lifting capacity of 12t. and is freestanding at a height of 35.6m. The machine has been configured with a jib length of 48.4 meters and a tip load of 5.6t. Equipped with a 55kW winch and a drum capacity of 700 meters, the flat-top maximum lifting speed is 22 meters per minute.

The MRT294, which freestands at a height of 36.2m, is at work with a jib length of 42.37m and a 7.6t tip load. The 16t maximum lifting capacity crane is fitted with a 75kW winch and 700-meter drum boosting a maximum lifting speed of 26 meters per minute.

The machines had a staggered installation schedule, in line with the jobsite progress.

With the jobsite located in close proximity to Yorkdale Shopping Centre, one of the busiest centres in Toronto, as well as the Highway 401, one of the most trafficked highways in Canada, the biggest challenges of the project were to ensure smooth operations when accessing the site and to guarantee that the cranes do not swing outside the boundaries of the site.

Upon completion, the site will feature three contemporary towers hosting 760 residential rental units, commercial spaces, and several modern amenities.

“Currently, we have seven Raimondi cranes within our fleet, all at work at different jobsites around the Greater Toronto Region.

“We are proud to participate in this landmark project by Fitzrovia and have utilized two of Raimondi’s heaviest lifting machines in order to ensure its successful delivery,” he concluded.

Both cranes, erected by Total Crane Hoisting & Rigging Inc., will remain onsite for a total of approximately 18 months.

DBS (Dynamic Block System) and Torque Divider are switchable, allowing for high traction when needed, but also can be set for minimal to no ground damage for delicate ground. High interest rates, increased borrowing costs, and inflation saw the level of activity in the UK’s construction sector drop to levels experienced during the start of the pandemic. Over a third (37%) of workers state that their employee experience is worse now than pre-2020. There are numerous factors contributing to this dissatisfaction. The impact of ongoing staff shortages was found to be the most common reason for poor employee experience, with over half of deskless workers citing staffing issues as a key challenge. This was followed by less in-person training (37%), worse communication (36%), and fewer opportunities for development (26%).

This is having devastating consequences for the UK workforce. 53% feel less motivated, 32% are unhappy at work, and 31% are less productive. If left unaddressed, this risks exacerbating the ongoing skills shortages further, with one in five considering leaving their company in the next 12 months, and a further 17% considering leaving their industry altogether.

The research from Cloud Assess, which was conducted amongst deskless employees, including construction workers, reveals that hangovers from the pandemic are behind many of the grievances cited by workers.

According to the study, almost two-thirds (64%) of businesses stopped some activities entirely because of the pandemic and have not resumed them since. Activities that facilitate in-person networking and learning are the most likely to have been dropped, including team parties, face-to-face meetings, and in-person training. This move away from face-to-face interactions is not supported by the vast majority of workers, with 84% claiming they would like to see some of this activity return.

In-person training was found to be the activity that most workers would like to see reinstated. This is no surprise, given that almost three quarters (73%) of the employees researched claim that the training they are offered by their employer has been affected by the pandemic in some way.

26% are being offered fewer training opportunities, whilst 38% say that their training is being increasingly delivered online. This shift is not proving popular. 85% of workers whose employees have moved towards online training or e-learning believe it has had a negative impact on them. 39% say that training sessions are now boring, whilst 34% feel that training is now being viewed as a tick box exercise by their employers.

Even more concerning, just 20% believe that the online training provided to them is actually benefiting their career, whilst even fewer (18%) think it’s making them better at their job. This is having a detrimental impact on employee satisfaction, with more than one in 10 workers stating that they feel less valued by their employer as a result of the move towards online training.

A QUARTER OF UK TRADESPEOPLE NOW OFFER PAYMENT PLANS TO HELP WITH THE COST OF LIVING

A quarter (25%) of UK tradespeople now allow customers to pay for work in instalments, as a way of helping homeowners afford renovations throughout the cost-of-living crisis.

New research by IronmongeryDirect, the UK’s largest supplier of specialist ironmongery, surveyed tradespeople across the nation and found that almost two in five (39%) have been asked about payment plans in recent months.

Younger workers are leading the trend and are more than twice as likely to accept staggered payments as the older generations. A third of millennial (25-34) tradespeople allow instalments (33%), compared to just 14% of over 55s.

Certain trades are also more likely than others to offer such schemes. More than two-thirds (67%) of roofers allow their clients to pay on finance, ahead of bricklayers (57%) and locksmiths (50%).

The UK tradespeople most likely to offer payment plans to customers are:

Payment plans offer advantages to both tradespeople and customers – more than a fifth (21%) of workers think they’d help attract more business – but precautions need to be taken to ensure financial security.

To help tradespeople who are thinking of allowing staggered payments, IronmongeryDirect has partnered with Rick Smith, managing director at Forbes Burton, to share advice on how to stay protected.

1) Financial feasibility: “Tradespeople should assess the financial viability of offering payment plans and ensure that it won’t negatively impact the business’ cash flow.”

2) Legal compliance: “The payment plan needs to be compliant with all applicable laws and regulations, including consumer protection laws, truth-in-lending laws, and debt collection laws, as well as considering if the offering falls under the remit of the Financial Conduct Authority.”

3) Terms and conditions: “Ensure you define the terms and conditions of the payment plan, including the amount to be paid, the payment schedule, the interest rate (if any), and any late payment fees.”

4) Processing and tracking: “Establish a system for processing and tracking payments, including a method for monitoring income, handling delinquent accounts, and reporting to credit bureaus.”

5) Collection plans: “A good debt collection system is crucial. Make sure you can collect what you are owed and understand how to take things to court if necessary.”

AVOIDING DEBT DISPUTES

Builders Merchants and their construction customers have a symbiotic relationship. Anyone operating in the construction industry knows that, when working on contracts with milestones that have to be reached to trigger payment, their relationship with their builder merchant supplier is key to not only achieving these, but keeping them in materials whilst they await payment.

Builders Merchants therefore play an important part in the construction industry generally and it is key that relationships are maintained. However, there will come a time, especially in a cost of living crisis and periods of entrenched inflation, where there is potential for conflict.

Nobody wants to get embroiled in a dispute and it is easily avoided by considering the following points:

1. Be responsive

The worst thing you can do when you owe money is ignore the demands and bury your head in the sand. Failing to engage may cause your creditor to believe you are refusing to pay and make it difficult to maintain relations. It is likely you have a good relationship with your Builders Merchant who, if spoken to, may be able to provide a solution, such as temporary extended credit terms.

2. Offer alternatives

It may be the case that you are in short term difficulty, but you know some limited grace will give you time to settle your bills. Offer alternatives if payment is not possible, such as confirming you will refer your lay customer to the Builders

Merchant directly to purchase materials. This will assist you in the immediate short term while also demonstrating to the Builders Merchant there remains value in the relationship, which may allow them to consider other options.

3. Check your payment terms

While you will have likely agreed reasonable payment terms in advance, if the terms were silent the Late Payment of Commercial Debts (Interest) Act 1998 (the “Act”) inserts the right to be paid 30 days after delivery of the goods or services in business to business transactions. You may be getting chased earlier than you are required to pay.

Advice to the Builders Merchant

If your customer continues to engage with you and has not shown a willingness to deal with their debt, ultimately you have the option of approaching a specialist Debt Recovery solicitor. As well as seeking payment of the full debt, the solicitor should also be able to pursue interest at 8% above the Bank of England Base Rate and compensation as stated in the Act. This will contribute to, if not cover, the costs you incur.

If after all best efforts, the debtor still will not pay, remember that you are within your rights to issue a Claim against them. Sometimes, the threat of litigation will be enough to encourage a debtor to pay, but if not, your solicitor can follow up with a warning about further action as this will ensure the debtor takes collection proceedings seriously and actually pays what they owe.

GLOBAL LEADER IN PROFESSIONAL AUDIO-VISUAL SOLUTIONS CHOOSES BRIGHTON FOR NEW UK HQ

Biamp, a global leading in the provision of professional audio-visual solutions, has announced the relocation of its UK headquarters to Brighton. The fit-out to its three-floors of offices on Middle Street in the centre of city was carried out by BRAC Contracts.

Having previously been located in central London, the Covid pandemic led the Biamp team to assess its office requirements which led to the firm’s recent relocation. Brighton proved to be the ideal base given its proximity to both London and Gatwick, and several of the team already lived close-by. The city’s young demographic and strong education links also meant that the company could be assured of a skilled future workforce.

The ground, first- and second-floors in the four-storey building were all vacant and provided Biamp with a blank canvas from which it could create a space that’s not only welcoming to its 25-strong UK team, but also to its global customer base.

The Category-B fit-out work carried out by BRAC Contracts included the installation of new air-conditioning, new toilet and kitchen facilities, two glass-fronted meeting areas, a bar area and an auditorium for customer demonstrations. The outside decking area that has proved so popular was also given a full refurbishment.

XPO TRIALS INDUSTRY-FIRST MULTIMODAL SOLUTION WITH OVERNIGHT LINEHAUL RAIL TRANSPORT OF PALLETISED FREIGHT

XPO, a leading provider of freight transportation services, has initiated another first with its three-month trial of an innovative multimodal solution that is unique in the UK. The company will migrate volumes destined for Scotland from its shared user pallet network to a new multimodal solution utilising overnight rail service for the linehaul portion. Malcolm Logistics provides the rail service through a key partnership agreement with XPO and accommodates loads of all sizes.

XPO first introduced a road-rail option in the UK in 2022, combining full truckload transport and daytime rail service for pipe manufacturer Wavin. The new solution’s combination of pallet network and overnight rail maintains the lead times required and is expected to be faster than

traditional trucking at a comparable cost, with significantly less environmental impact. XPO customers in the Midlands who ship to Scotland can reduce the greenhouse gas emission of a pallet by up to 79%.

The current trial covers a distance of more than 500 kilometres from Crick to Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal in Northamptonshire, onward to Mossend Rail Terminal in Scotland, and then to XPO’s distribution hub in Motherwell.

The multimodal transit time from Crick to Motherwell is about two hours less than the same journey by truck and avoids the risk of road delays, whilst also reducing road congestion. As each vehicle journey is about 600 miles, there is a savings of 705 kg of CO2 per trip.

BUILDING SERVICES FIRM FHP SPECIFIED FOR MULTIMILLION-POUND WEMBLEY DEVELOPMENT PROJECT

Building services and engineering consultants FHP has been specified to provide MEP and design services for a multi-million-pound residential led mixed-use regeneration project in North London.

The firm is providing a range of RIBA Stage 3, 4 and 5 MEP technical and construction Revit design services to the city’s leading residential-led mixed-use developer Regal London, which is leading the £270 million redevelopment of the former Euro Parts headquarters in Wembley.

The site is currently being transformed into 759 new residential units across five high-rise buildings, which will feature 78 three-bedroomed family homes and more than 200 affordable properties. It all comes under plans to deliver a sustainable mixed-use development in line with the local authority’s wider aspirations for the growth and prosperity of the Wembley area.

More than 33,000 sq. ft. of flexible commercial space is also under construction to accommodate retail, light industrial and logistics businesses. New communal amenity spaces within the upper roof terraces and at podium level area will eventually feature along

with new landscaping, improved public access along the Wealdstone Brook, and the creation of 31,000 sq. ft. of children’s play space.

FHP has been closely involved in the project from the start of RIBA Stage 3 providing mechanical, electrical and public health services together with sustainability, building physics and digital engineering support for what is being seen as one of North London’s most prestigious regeneration projects.

Services to facilitate design stage and As-Built SAP and SBEM energy use and carbon emissions calculations were also completed by FHP as part of a comprehensive package of support.

WOMEN IN CONSTRUCTION: INDUSTRY INTERVIEW WITH XYZ REALITY FIELD ENGINEER

Who are you and what led you to become a field application engineer?

My name is Sofia Porsborg, I’m from Argentina, and I am a land surveyor and field application engineer for XYZ Reality.

I didn’t really know that I wanted to pursue this role until I was around 15 years old. I had a teacher in school that knew I wanted to study engineering. At that point, I wasn’t sure of the area of engineering but she helped to guide me. I could not be happier about finding this path as I find it really interesting, because you can work in the office and the field, anywhere on the planet.

It is worth noting it can be complicated when you are a woman and you want to try to find a job in construction. Roles in the office are typically easier to find, however, generally if a male and female have the same experience and backgrounds, males are preferred.

So has the industry changed for women, and do you think it’s witnessing a positive change?

Yes, things are definitely changing. In one of my previous roles, there were only two of us women in the office. Fortunately, my employer started to employ more women however, for a time, we were not allowed to go on site to take measurements as the role was seen as too physically demanding. I had conversations with my employer around this. This did change down the line.

What do you think is the most prominent issue that we’re faced with today in construction or generally in their communities?

I think the most difficult thing that women have to tackle today is that it feels like we have to show we are more experienced and capable than a male going for the same role to stand a good chance. There is still a preference for males in many roles. You almost have to bring something additional to the table, whether it be organisational skills, or experience with software to make you more competitive.

What advice would you offer women interested in a career in construction? The next generation?

Like anything of interest, my advice is to try it. No matter the obstacles, don’t be dissuaded if you are passionate about a career in construction. Also, do not make men the enemy, help them to understand the challenges women are faced with. I think it’s clear that a woman with the same experience and background will not necessarily have a better chance than a man in the same position. However, I say don’t give up.

How has technology made it easier for women to break barriers and succeed in the construction industry?

I think the main way that technology is helping women in construction is by removing some of the physical aspects of certain roles. This means women who are sometimes viewed as less physicallyable stand a better chance at getting positions in the field where roles have historically been more limited to males.

If remediation surveys discover radon gas emissions, Japanese Knotweed and any other invasive plant species and contaminants deposited through earlier occupier activities, these too can be included in remediation costs. Where buildings contain asbestos, costs of removal and either demolition or insitu encapsulation and sealing of the asbestos elements is a claimable cost.

Land Remediation Tax Relief

To qualify for Land Remediation Tax Relief your company must have incurred costs on cleaning up land or buildings considered to be in a contaminated state. The scope of costs allowed is generous.

You must be registered as a limited company in the UK and be the owner of the land or building at the time of the remediation work. In addition, the land or building must be owned either as a freehold or longer-term leasehold.

Common examples of qualifying contamination:

• Asbestos

• Ground and landfill gases

• Japanese Knotweed

• Sulphate contamination in soil and concrete

• Arsenic

• Removal of redundant utility services and concrete foundations

Qualifying costs can include surveys, excavations, soil and groundwater treatments, staff costs, materials and subcontractor costs. Claims can be made for categories of derelict land. This can be advised with relevance to time periods when land could be considered for derelict status.

Regardless of the industry you operate within, if you’ve acquired land or buildings in a contaminated or derelict state for intended commercial use, you could claim.

HOUSEBUILDING AWARDS KEEP COMING FOR LISVANE SITE MANAGER

A site manager who is overseeing work on a new development of homes just outside Cardiff has been recognised with a leading industry award for a 16th time.

Paul Oakley, 49, who leads construction work at Bellway’s Longwood Grange development in Lisvane, has won a Seal of Excellence as part of the National House Building Council’s (NHBC) Pride in the Job competition.

He was one of just seven site managers across the NHBC’s Wales region to have received the honour in this year’s awards, having picked up a Quality Award in the previous stage of the competition in June last year.

The Pride in the Job awards were created over 40 years ago to promote excellence in the construction industry, and to reward managers that adhere to and maintain the highest standards on their sites.

This most recent award means that Paul has now been recognised by the NHBC in the Pride in the Job awards a total of 16 times, including six Seal of Excellence wins and a Regional Award win in 2020, in the 21 years he’s been a site manager.

LONDON BRICKLAYING APPRENTICES CHALLENGED BY FORTERRA

Bricklaying apprentices gathered recently at Lewisham College to compete in Forterra’s third annual London Apprenticeship Challenge.

The contest saw 12 London-based apprentice bricklayers compete in teams of three to show off their newly learned skills through a selection of challenges.

Conor Willis for Lee Marley achieved first place for his tremendous work over the course of the challenge. Liam Nunn, also from Lee Marley took 2nd prize

for his work throughout the day while Daniel Summerfield from Winchmore Brickwork took third prize. This is the second time Daniel has been recognised in the competition, having won the team challenge in 2022.

The whole team from Lee Marley impressed the judges and they also celebrated winning the team round.

Bob Noseda, Sector Skills Advisor at Lewisham College, said: “We were thrilled to be able to host the Forterra London Apprentice Challenge again, and have the opportunity to meet some emerging talent in the industry, as well as welcome back some familiar faces. It’s wonderful that Forterra encourages students in the industry, providing them with resources and support. Huge thanks also goes to Rob Lynch and his team at Lewisham College for delivering this competition, it’s not an easy task but they always do a great job.”

THE IMPORTANCE OF SERVICING AND INSPECTING YOUR FALL PROTECTION EQUIPMENT

Falls from a height are the biggest cause of workplace fatalities in the UK.

Therefore, it is the responsibility of every employer to ensure every worker has the right fall protection equipment. This may include the likes of fall arrest systems, fall restraint systems or abseil equipment.

Such systems are designed to minimise falls as well as the potential for injury should a worker lose their footing, or experience any other incident which could result in a fall while working at height.

Though, as with any kind of safety equipment, even if you opt for the very best system - unless that equipment is used properly and is regularly serviced and inspected, it may not offer workers the required protection.

Here is an explanation of why regular servicing and inspections are important for your fall protection equipment (also known as FPE).

Inspecting Fall Protection Equipment

Fall protection equipment should never be used if it has not been inspected first. Furthermore, in accordance with the Personal Protective Equipment Regulations 1992, employers are required to ensure that all safety equipment, including fall protection equipment, is maintained and is in good condition.

All equipment must be subject to pre-checks, detailed checks and where appropriate interim inspections, according to the HSE.

Some of the main aspects that need to be checked with fall protection equipment within the webbing, stitching and hardware include:

• Abrasion

• Chemical damage

• Heat damage

• Lanyard condition

• Metal components condition

• Stitching detail

• UV degradation

The exact elements that need to be checked will be listed in the equipment manual and will be specific to the type of fall protection used.

It’s really important that even minor damage is not overlooked, as this could have still caused a safety compromise.

Likewise, even a small amount of damage may fester (especially with repeated exposure to what caused the damage), which then could cause a major problem.

Preventing Falls At Work - Health And Safety Matters

Falling should be one of the biggest parts of every business’s health and safety policies and processes. Regardless of whether or not your employees regularly work at height, knowing that you’ve done everything that you can mitigate injury via a fall is morally and legally required. On that note, fall risks of all levels are often dependent on the type of businesses and the work that is carried out by employees.

For instance, in some cases, there is a risk of falling from the top of a building when doing maintenance work, and for others, the work is internal within a manufacturing or warehouse space.

Ultimately, it doesn’t matter what your company may produce or indeed, how your team may need to work to get the job done - the main focus is ensuring the very best health and safety measures are put in place.

PROACTIVE ROOT CAUSE ANALYSIS

The concept of incident prediction is fraught with controversy and a topic which is guaranteed to generate debate. The notion that you could predict precisely where and when an incident will occur is equally flawed, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t valuable insight that can be gleaned through better understanding of leading indicators.

Incidents don’t flag the time of their arrival, but do they offer signals that we miss. Have we, despite our vast range of preventive measures, simply become incident blind?

The investigation of many serious and fatal workplace incidents over years reveals an unfortunate pattern where almost inevitably the words “if only” surface:

“If only we had picked up on this issue earlier.”

“If only we had acted on the audit findings.”

It’s doubtful there has ever been an incident where no warning signals were present.

Conversely, well investigated incidents reveal latent issues that pre-existed but were somehow missed or seemingly went undetected. These inevitably lead to further incidents with consequence if left unaddressed over time.

This break in the causal chain between proactive assurance activity and reactive incident investigation is endemic across most industries and worryingly, it is seemingly accepted as the norm. This doesn’t have to be the case.

UK-FIRST TECHNOLOGY GIVES NEW LIFE TO HISTORIC NORTH WALES HOUSING ASSOCIATION PROPERTY

Social housing tenants living in a traditional stone-built property will benefit from improved energy efficiency, as a result of a ground-breaking new technique pioneered in North Wales.

As the property in Y Felinheli houses residents with physical and learning difficulties, it was not suitable for internal wall insulation due to the disruption that would be caused by rehousing them temporarily and working around their specialist equipment. Therefore, a decision was made to explore external insulation, allowing the residents to remain in their homes throughout.

However, due to the original construction of the home being built from stone and concrete render (which needed to be replaced with lime render), social landlord North Wales Housing had difficulty finding a product that would insulate the external walls while meeting the building regulation requirements for traditional buildings.

However, by working with local retrofit experts, Greenhouse Energy and Retrospect Consultancy Ltd on a pilot-scheme supported by the Wales Government, the Association has been able to find a solution for the property. A new technique has been created, using an aerogel product, which delivers significant energy efficiency benefits while preserving the building’s traditional look.

The team behind the pilot plan to present their evidence to Ofgem in the hope that the technique will be granted ‘innovation status’ and can be rolled out to similar traditional properties, which are common in rural areas in North Wales and the rest of the UK.

NEWLAND HOMES CREATES NEW HEAD OF MARKETING ROLE

Newland Homes is pleased to announce the promotion of Chris Parker to the role of Head of Marketing. In this new role for the company, Chris will lead the marketing department and oversee the independent housebuilder’s marketing strategies and initiatives.

TOM STARTS CAREER IN HOUSEBUILDING AS TRAINEE ASSISTANT SITE MANAGER AT BOVIS HOMES LOCATION

A construction student has embarked on a career in the housebuilding industry straight out of college, as trainee assistant site manager at Vistry Group’s Harfleet Gardens location in Ash.

Having completed his Level 3 Construction and the Built Environment course at North Kent College, Tom Baker is now working on the construction of Bovis Homes properties at the development, off Chequer Lane.

The 18-year-old is also studying for his Level 4 construction NVQ alongside the job on site.

Tom said: “I first heard about the Bovis Homes job whilst I was nearing the end of my course in college. I’m grateful that I was offered the position, as it’s a great opportunity for me, especially straight out of college. I’ve been at the company for over six months now, and I’ve received strong support from my colleagues and managers.”

Having family in the construction industry inspired Tom, who completed his GCSEs

during the first year of Covid, to learn and develop the skills he needed on his own.

He said: “I started my two-year college course at 16, and it was difficult having to learn remotely due to the Covid restrictions, however it gave me a good understanding of the terms and methods in construction, making it a valuable experience for me.

Whilst I was learning, I was able to work hands-on as a part-time labourer at AE building services to secure and broaden my knowledge. It’s great working at Vistry, as I have a good team around me for advice and support, who are always pushing me to do my best.

“I’m looking to build a long-term career with Vistry, and with the recent Countryside merger, it provides even more opportunities for me to learn and grow within the company.”

UK MANUFACTURER ACS CONTINUES TO INVEST IN CONSTRUCTION TALENT – ANNOUNCING EIGHT INTERNAL PROMOTIONS

SCHÖCK BOLE ELIMINATES PUNCHING SHEAR RISK AT MAJOR ESSEX REGENERATION

The prevention of punching shear failure with flat slab construction is a critical consideration and while traditional solutions such as links in the punching area work fairly effectively, they have disadvantages in that they are both timeconsuming to install and have the risk of installation inaccuracy and positional stability during concreting. A product that does offer a cost-effective, easy-toinstall solution, is the widely used and dependable Schöck Bole shear rail; and one of the many construction sites where Schöck Bole is the system of choice is the New Green project at Rainham in Essex. A number of council estates are planned for regeneration in the area, as a joint venture between the London Borough of Havering and Wates Residential. Known as the ’12 Estates’ regeneration programme, it will see around 5,200 homes delivered in Havering over the next 12 to 15 years and the earliest of these is the replacement of Napier and New Plymouth House. Two outdated 13-storey tower blocks which are being replaced by mid-rise, high density buildings, providing 197 homes arranged around new open spaces.

Signifcantly faster installation with Bole

As with any reinforced concrete slab design, the New Green project is at risk of punching shear failure, which traditionally has been resolved by adding further concrete, such as the use of downstand beams or localised thickened column heads. However these measures require complex formwork and significantly reduce the benefits offered by the flat slab design.

By incorporating the Schöck Bole shear rail system at New Green, installation is cost-effective and significantly faster than traditional loose links.

The ready-to-install reinforcement element consists of double-headed studs with spacing bars to ensure correct positioning. Spacers allow installation on the formwork and as a result, installation on the construction site and in the precast plant is therefore quicker, safer and easier to achieve. Two spacer bars are welded to the vertical studs, which ensure the correct distance between uprights. The forged stud heads guarantee a perfect finishing bond with the concrete. The dramatically reduced fixing time far outweighs any additional material costs that may be involved with a prefabricated system.

Schöck offers two other variants

Schöck has developed two other punching shear reinforcement variants. The type U, designed for installation before the lower mat and type O for installation after the top reinforcement layer. All products in the range are designed to Eurocode 2 and supplied ready for installation. There is downloadable user-friendly Schöck design software available too, which enables fast and simple dimensioning of the product.

BIO BITUMEN – TURNING CO2 EMISSIONS INTO CO2 CAPTURE

It is estimated that around 36 million kilometres of roads are built or repaired each year. That doesn’t include the creation of car parks, public squares and private driveways. Then there are flat roofs on offices and factories and various industrial applications including cars and dishwashers.

CO2 Emissions

All of these activities have the same common element in their construction – they are massive users of bitumen. It is estimated that bitumen production –bitumen is the binding agent in asphalt –generates more than 30 megatons of CO2 emissions every year.

In a world where there is a drive by governments, commercial entities and even individuals to do everything possible to reduce carbon emissions in order to help alleviate environmental damage, surely this is an area where something needs to be done?

QMRE-B2 Square

Step forward QM Recycled Energy (QMRE). Better known for its involvement in establishing a network of plastic-waste2-oil and back to new and renewable plastic systems, QMRE has extended its role in limiting environmental damage by becoming the UK’s sole distributor of German company B2 Square’s Bio Bitumen – the developer of a dramatically new type of bitumen.

This is a completely new method of manufacturing asphalt by reverse engineering– a safer, more energy efficient and CO2 negative process.

This asphalt is 95% composed of stones, sand and filler with a 5% input of Bio Bitumen, a synthetic binding agent that is CO2 negative. All constituent materials are cold right up to the asphalt mixing plant. No hot bitumen is present during the entire production process.

As no heating of stored bitumen is needed the process is highly energy efficient with lower CO2 emissions and a greatly reduced risk of accidents – 90% of accidents within the bitumen process occur across transport, logistics and handling activities.

This complete rethink of how to create bitumen -a decentralised production method with instant construction and associated logistics and with two cold elements – the powder and the liquid –means Bio Bitumen can be utilised by every country in the world.

Conventional bitumen is based on crude oil and refining residues and needs to be kept hot during transportation.

On longer journeys oil drums are used as containers – which then become hazardous waste for landfill.

Natural Resources

Bio Bitumen is made from natural resources and is a decentralised production away from refineries. It is of a superior quality – significantly more durable and that quality can be reliably repeated.

QMRE-B2 Square’s use of natural, sustainable components means the process is CO2 negative. In fact, Bio Bitumen turns a process that is a massive CO2 emitter into a vast CO2 capture mechanism. One ton of bio bitumen will capture up to 1,516kg of CO2.

Bio Bitumen is available in a full range of different viscosity grades, PG grades and various UTI’s with grades and volumes made to measure. Consistent properties at both high and low temperatures are present owing to unique chemistry.

Bio bitumen is Ideal for high RAP addition rates. No need for rejuvenators and/or adhesion promoters anymore.

In addition, QMRE-B2 Square offers a choice of environmentally friendly options for polymer addition and fluxed bitumen.

AVOID COMPLEXITY IN YOUR NEW GAS CONNECTION

In gas connection and metering, even relatively simple projects involve a variety of skills and processes, requiring a range of expertise and resources. For any business with a gas-infrastructure need, using one provider to handle everything is bound to create efficiencies, saving time, effort and money.

Since 1986, National Gas Metering has specialised in commercial gas and metering services, and its Siteworks team offers a full one-stop-shop service. As Carl Evans, Siteworks Lead, explains, “Any business that requires a gas installation can come to us for everything – no matter how complex the project. We have a design team, a projectmanagement team, and a team that organises all the metering elements.”

The company tackles new connections, disconnections, upgrades, downgrades, alterations and removals. It can install outlet pipework at a customer’s site, and carry out upgrades without interruption at missioncritical locations such as hospitals and factories, installing new facilities in parallel with existing supplies.

For high-usage sites, the team installs AMR (Advanced meter reading) and correctors that can provide half-hourly reads, feeding directly into the customer’s SCADA system. This is particularly valuable for powergeneration sites with a carbon-capture element to their contracts, and an obligation to report to the local distribution network operator.

This concern for the whole project – and willingness to be involved from the very start – underlines all National Gas Metering’s services. Most importantly, it’s helping to raise standards and control costs in a safety-critical industry.
